Indian football: 3 takeaways from India's friendlies against Oman, UAE

A few important takeaways from India's games against Oman and UAE...

India took the field after 492 days without football and resumed their preparation for the upcoming World Cup-Asian Cup qualifiers with international friendlies against Oman and UAE in Dubai.

Head coach Igor Stimac handed out 11 debuts to Indian footballers and presented a new-look Blue Tigers to the audience back home. However, their displays left a lot to be desired.

A second-half header by Manvir Singh helped India hold Oman in the first game. Against the mightier UAE, Stimac's team was thrashed 6-0.

It is important to remember that these are friendly games played to gain match fitness, experience, try out new methods and players on the field. With that in mind, below are the three takeaways from this international break for the India national team.

Reality check, not humiliation

UAE and Oman are 74th and 81st in the men's FIFA Rankings whereas India are 104th. When India played against weaker opponents in friendly games, there was hue and cry about the necessity to face off against strong teams who are above India in the rankings. Now that they have done, Indian football has been dealt a reality check.

India just did not have enough quality to take on their opponents this time around. There were no easy giveaways out on the field and the Blue Tigers were truly tested. The games showed that India still lacks the fundamentals - both technical and physical attributes that are required to shine on the international stage.

Bring on baby leagues, development at the grassroots and better levels of coaching at the youth level and only then we can talk about competing with Asian giants. Let Indian kids explore their potential in playing football when they are kids and let them get picked up by academies long before they hit their teens. And then we will see the difference.

You need to get exposed to quality coaching at a very young age to mould quality players. Unfortunately in India, kids do not get exposed to the same unless they are well into their teens.

India has to improve not just technically, but also physically because as it stands, the top teams in Asia are likely to just bully the Blue Tigers off the pitch. If you compare the physique of Indian players with West Asian giants, the muscle mass is not even comparable. And that is the reason they were being bullied off the ball. The best example is UAE's final goal against India.

Chemistry affected style

A total of 11 new Indians earned their debuts for the national team under Stima during the two friendlies. The friendlies are an opportunity to test out new players and hence the coach cannot be blamed for doing exactly that. However, there was also a stubbornness to play possession-based football disregarding the superiority and strengths of the opponents.

Granted, Stimac is trying to improve the team's style of play but there could have been a more balanced approach with several new players coming into the squad. For an average Indian football supporter, seeing Adil Khan and Mashoor Shereef struggle as ball-playing centre-backs in a high line against Ali Mabkhout and co. was a nerve-wracking experience.

Manvir Singh can lead the line

With Sunil Chhetri out of the picture for the friendlies, Manvir Singh had the chance to lead the line and he took his chances. He wasn't extraordinary in the final third but showed glimpses of how the Indian attack might look like in the future.

The question of Chhetri's replacement remains unanswered. And the biggest hindrance to solving that puzzle is the lack of Indian forwards playing regularly in the domestic leagues. Manvir is the lone candidate as it stands, following his impressive campaign with ATK Mohun Bagan. Who will compete with him?

Former USWNT star Solo hits out at Rapinoe for negotiating 'less-than-equal' CBA with U.S. Soccer

The now-retired goalkeeper said that her ex-teammate did not secure the best possible deal in 2017

Former U.S. women's national team goalkeeper Hope Solo has hit out at Megan Rapinoe, accusing the forward of leading the team to sign a "less-than-equal" collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with U.S. Soccer in 2017.

The USWNT is currently engaged in a lawsuit against U.S. Soccer, accusing the federation of discriminating against the team due to their gender.

In May 2020, a federal judge ruled in U.S. Soccer's favor over the team's pay discrimination claim, basing part of his ruling on the fact that the USWNT agreed to the CBA that they later attempted to overturn.

What was said?

"Megan led the team into signing a less-than-equal collective bargaining agreement (CBA)," Solo told BeIN Sports.

"We were so close to achieving equal pay in 2016; it was offered to us, we were about to sign the contract with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).

"But Megan Rapinoe and the leaders of that team signed a less-than-equal CBA, which is concerning for the overall class-action suit and the overall fight.

"But, trust me, we have history on our side, as well as congressmen and women.

"President Joe Biden is going to fight for equal pay - we believed in him four years ago and we believe in him now."

Was the CBA less than equal?

Yes, but it is unclear if the USWNT could have secured a better deal.

The 2017 CBA saw the USWNT earn plenty of concessions from U.S. Soccer but, partially based on the difference in how the team's CBA is structured compared to the USMNT, it is hard to define what "equal" exactly means.

Most USWNT players are salaried employees of U.S. Soccer, earning a guaranteed annual wage and benefits, while the USMNT are paid mostly in roster and performance-related bonuses.

What happened with the EEOC?

In March 2016, five USWNT players - including Rapinoe and Solo - filed a complaint with the EEOC, the U.S. government agency that enforces anti-discrimination laws.

The EEOC was still conducting an investigation when, in April 2017, the USWNT and U.S. Soccer agreed to a new CBA. By then, Solo was no longer with the USWNT.

In February 2019, the EEOC finished its investigation and the USWNT received right-to-sue letters from the agency. The following month, they filed their lawsuit against U.S. Soccer.

What is the status of the USWNT lawsuit?

In December, the USWNT and U.S. Soccer reached a settlement over one portion of the team's lawsuit, involving unequal working conditions.

As part of the settlement, U.S. Soccer agreed to revised policies over charter flights, venue selection, professional support, and hotel accommodations.

The settlement allowed the USWNT to move forward with their appeal over the federal judge's May 2020 ruling against the USWNT in the pay discrimination portion of the suit.

Afcon qualification overshadowed by Benin-Sierra Leone Covid controversy

The Group L fixture between the pair was postponed after the Squirrels refused to accept alleged positive cases

Tuesday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Sierra Leone and Benin has been postponed after the visitors refused to accept the results of Covid-19 tests presented to them by the hosts.

Despite arriving at the National Stadium in Freetown for their final Group L game, the Benin team refused to leave their bus after being told within an hour before kick-off that six players—including star striker Steve Mounie—would be prevented from playing after tests showed they have tested positive for coronavirus.

Benin, who claim to have taken tests 72 hours earlier which produced negative results for all of the squad, did not accept the results produced by Sierra Leone and duly refused to contest the match without a full complement of players.

“We arrived at the stadium in Sierra Leone to learn that—bizarrely—five starters have Covid,” tweeted full-back Emmanuel Imorou. “What a comedy sketch.

“We did our own tests 72 hours before the match—as planned,” he added. “After the time of the trip, we were tested again in Sierra Leone, and five positive results…the captain, and players from Ligue 1 and Ligue 2.”

Footage shared by the defender shows local police and civilians surrounding the team bus, with sources close to the team telling Goal that the authorities were seeking to remove the players who had tested positive from the bus.

The players were eventually allowed to leave the bus and return to their hotel after four and a half hours of waiting.

“What is currently happening is a disgrace for African football,” the Benin Football Federation wrote on their official Twitter handle. “We hope that the Confederation of African Football will take its responsibilities and—especially—take measures following these decisions.”

After a long postponement, during which, footage emerged showing Benin’s squad remaining in their team bus in the car park at the National Stadium, the match was eventually called off.

The decision throws into doubt the identity of the 24th qualifier for the Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled for Cameroon in early 2022.

Benin, who headed into the match second in Group L behind Nigeria, would have advanced if they avoided defeat.

However, victory for Sierra Leone would have almost certainly have been enough to take them through to the tournament either due to a superior head-to-head record or goal difference.

Sierra Leone were unable to put more pressure on Benin in their penultimate qualifier when they were held 0-0 away in Lesotho, while the Squirrels were defeated 1-0 by Nigeria in Porto-Novo to take qualification to the final group game.

Manchester United’s Diallo dazzles during Cote d’Ivoire initiation

Amad Diallo may have already made his Cote d’Ivoire debut against Niger Republic, albeit, the Manchester United teenager only made his entrance into the Elephants squad when he completed his international initiation on Tuesday evening.

During a team dinner, the 18-year-old was formally inducted into the Ivorian squad as he danced for the rest of the team at an induction ceremony.

The youngster put up an unbelievable dance performance from the disc jockey’s melodious makossa beat to the delight of his new teammates. The winger was handed his international bow in Cote d’Ivoire’s 3-0 away triumph against the Menas at the Stade General Seyni Kountche, Niamey.

With Patrice Beaumelle's men leading 3-0 thanks to goals from Serge Aurier, Max-Alain Gradel and Serge Kanon, Diallo was brought in as an 86th-minute replacement for Arsenal’s Nicolas Pepe in the Group K fixture.

However, he was an unused substitute as the two-time African champions defeated Ethiopia 3-1 on Tuesday evening. Even at the loss, Walia ibex also qualified for the biennial African football showpiece at the expense of Madagascar.

Diallo signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men, a deal which will keep him with the Old Trafford giants until June 2025.

United's pursuit of the Ivorian began in 2016 and the 18-year-old broke through in Serie A, playing five first-team games and scoring once for Atalanta.

At the age of 18 years and 243 days, he became the youngest non-British player to ever score in a major European competition for the Red Devils.

Four minutes after replacing injured Anthony Martial in the Europa League game against AC Milan, the teenager handed his English team the lead against the Italians thanks to an assist from Bruno Fernandes.

The Portuguese midfielder floated a perfect ball over the top and the teenager produced a precise header over Antonio Donnarumma.

Interestingly, his maiden effort came with a first-ever shot for the team in just his third appearance for the Old Trafford giants.

Diallo could be on parade for the 12-time FA Cup winners when they host Brighton and Hove Albion in a league game on April 4, 2021.

Chelsea's Gallagher learning through hard times and 'dirty work' at West Brom and with England U21s

The Blues midfielder has had to get used to being out of possession and losing more this season than he has in the previous parts of his career

Conor Gallagher is trying to learn from difficult moments with England Under-21s and West Brom, having become used to winning in Chelsea's academy.

The 21-year-old midfielder is currently likely to suffer relegation from the Premier League this season. Meanwhile, England have been poor at the U21 European Championship in Slovenia, having suffered two defeats already to Portugal and Switzerland.

Still, Gallagher believes that handling defeats is part of football in his bid to reach the highest level for club and country.

What did Gallagher have to say?

"Everyone throughout their careers has a lot of tough moments," he said. "You experience losing and things like that and you improve. We as young players, no matter what, will get experience from it.

"I was excited to play in the Premier League after a step up from Championship last season. I’ve loved every minute of it. Hopefully I'll keep developing and improving. It’s been a tough season for West Brom so far, so doing the dirty side of the game, the importance of work off the ball [is important].

"Premier League quality will punish you if you switch off, so you need to be concentrated and focused. I know people have other views on players going on loan and I’ve been at three different teams, but it’s three different experiences and teams with [different] styles, different managers and players.

"I’ve learnt a lot already in two years. Hopefully I can continue to learn as a player."

What's his situation for club and country?

Chelsea regard Gallagher highly and he remains one of the frontrunners to return from the loan group and move into Thomas Tuchel's squad next season.

However, there's a lot of talent in west London, particularly in central midfield, which could block his pathway. Crystal Palace are reportedly interested in Gallagher, but they would have to negotiate a good fee as he is contracted to Chelsea until 2025.

Gallagher has only made one substitute appearance for England at the U21 European Championship but is expected to be starting the final group match on Wednesday evening. He spoke about his under-fire coach Aidy Boothroyd and about their efforts to qualify for the knock-out round.

"We always want to win; we have the talent in the group to win," he said. "Tournaments don't always go well even for the best teams in the world, but we definitely have the talent. A lot of English boys have proven it already, moving up to the senior team, which is great to see.

"It’s the pathway. They go on about it from an early age of youth teams; they talk about the pathway. That’s all they want to get into us. If you keep working hard and doing well, there’s a good chance of getting into the senior team. We’ve seen the young players go through.

"It would mean a lot for the players and the staff after all the work we have done to get through. The players who are here have done well this season so they deserve to be here. It is going to hurt for us if we don't get through."

'Let the masquerade end forever' - Benzema reacts to trial date being set for Valbuena sex tape case

The Real Madrid striker will have his day in court in October over his role in allegedly blackmailing his former France team-mate

Karim Benzema has welcomed a trial date being set for his alleged blackmailing of former France team-mate Mathieu Valbuena.

The Real Madrid striker has not played for France since 2015, when he was accused of extorting Valbuena over a sex tape in which the then-Marseille player appeared.

On Tuesday, the Versailles prosecutor's office confirmed that Benzema will face trial from October 20-22.

What was said?

Benzema reacted to the trial date being set on his Instagram story, saying: "Yes, finally, let's go. Let the masquerade end forever."

What is Benzema accused of?

In 2015, Benzema allegedly pressured Valbuena to pay off blackmailers who were threatening to release a sex tape in which the latter appeared.

Rather than deal with the blackmailers, however, Valbuena alerted the authorities. Benzema said at the time he was only trying to help his France team-mate.

As part of the fallout, Benzema was axed from the national team and six years later, he has yet to earn another call-up for Les Bleus despite his outstanding form for Madrid.

Benzema has since missed out on multiple major tournaments, including Euro 2016 in his homeland and France’s successful run to the World Cup title in 2018.

During his France career, Benzema scored 27 goals for his country in 81 caps.

How is Benzema performing for Madrid?

The 33-year-old has been in red-hot form for Madrid this season, scoring 23 goals in 32 appearances in all competitions.

After his brace against Celta Vigo on March 20, Benzema has scored in six straight appearances and now has a double in back-to-back La Liga matches.

'Aguero is irreplaceable' - Guardiola pays tribute to departing Manchester City legend

The Argentine striker has confirmed he will be leaving the club after 10 trophy-filled seasons

Manchester City manger Pep Guardiola has said Sergio Aguero is "irreplaceable" ahead of the striker's departure this summer.

City confirmed on Monday that Aguero would be leaving the club at the end of the season, ending a 10-year stay that saw the Argentine become the club's all-time top scorer.

Though City will likely bring in a new striker to help fill Aguero's void, Guardiola admitted that much of what the veteran striker offers won't be replaceable.

What was said?

"We have still two months ahead, and today I saw the training session, how brilliant he was and his commitment," Guardiola told Sky Sports.

"Sergio is irreplaceable. I could say in terms of numbers he can be replaceable, it's not easy when you see more than 360 games played and more than 250 goals, the amount of titles.

"So it's the legend, the best striker this club has ever had for this century through the years, but is irreplaceable in the souls, in the hearts, in the minds of our fans, of our people, of the players that played alongside him and all the managers who worked with him.

"He's a fantastic person, a human being, and I'm pretty sure if his mind is still aggressive like he is, he can extend his career longer and longer than maybe two or three or four or five years."

Aguero's legacy at City

The 32-year-old will leave City as a free agent in the summer after establishing himself as perhaps the club's greatest ever player.

Aguero's most memorable moment came on the final day of the 2011-12 Premier League season, as his injury-time winner against QPR sealed City's first English title since 1968.

The Argentine has scored 257 goals in his City career, becoming far and away the club's all-time top scorer (Eric Brook is in second place with 177 goals).

Among other personal records, Aguero is the highest scoring non-English player in Premier League history and fourth-highest-scoring player overall.

Aguero also helped City to major team success, winning four Premier League titles, one FA Cup and five League Cups.

Referee Charles Bulu: Ghanaian's react to compatriot's collapse during Cote d'Ivoire vs Ethiopia Afcon qualifier

Social media was flooded with messages of well-wishes after Tuesday's unfortunate incident

Many Ghanaians took to social media to comment on the reported collapse of Ghanaian referee Charles Bulu during a 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture between Cote d’Ivoire and Ethiopia in Abidjan on Tuesday.

The central man as the Elephants hosted the Walyas in a final matchday Group K fixture at Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara, Ghana Premier League referee Bulu went to ground in the 81st minute, moments after showing signs of uneasiness which caught the attention of players from both sides.

After receiving medical care, the referee was carried off the pitch on a stretcher, forcing the match to be cut short as the fourth referee, who could have replaced Bulu for the match to proceed, was from Cote d'Ivoire and could not be allowed to officiate a game of his own country.

Cote d'Ivoire led 3-1 at the time of the stoppage, their goals coming from Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-back Willy Boly, AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie and China-based winger Jean Evrard Kouassi.

Getaneh Kebede, meanwhile, fetched the visitors’ goal.

Ultimately, Cote d'Ivoire and Ethiopia finished first and second on the table, respectively, to book qualification for the tournament which will be hosted by Cameroon from January to February next year.

Below are some reactions to Tuesday's incident on Twitter:

Nigeria invited to play in maiden Basque Country Women's Cup

The African champions are expected to participate in the inaugural edition of the invitational tournament next month in Spain

Nigeria's women's national team have been invited to play in the 2021 Basque Country International Women's Cup next month in Spain.

The Super Falcons would compete alongside three sides in the four-team invitational tournament, which also features hosts Euskal Selekzioa, Venezuela and Argentina.

The West African side are the only African team expected to participate in the inaugural edition to be held from April 8-13 taking place in Bilbao, Spain.

Following Tuesday's announcement, the Nigeria Football Federation is yet to confirm the Falcons' participation and announce their roster for the five-day tournament.

Should Nigeria compete, this will be the second international outing in 2021 following the historic successful campaign at the Turkish Women's Cup in February.

In Antalya, they defeated CSKA Moscow 1-0, and Uzbekistan by the same scoreline before whitewashing Equatorial Guinea 9-0, scoring 11 goals overall without conceding one.

The upcoming tournament will also mark the Super Falcons' second outing under the watch of new tactician Randy Waldrum, who was appointed as Thomas Dennerby's replacement last October.

With the Africa Women's Cup of Nations qualifiers around the corner, the Super Falcons will gear up for the series in a bid to retain their African crown and qualify for the ninth World Cup in 2023.

In the fixtures, the Nigerians would face Argentina in a knockout semi-final encounter in Zubieta on April 8, while hosts Euskal Selekzioa will slug it out with Venezuela in Lezama on the same day.

Winners of the two semi-final encounters will battle in the final for the inaugural title on April 11 in Zubieta, while the losers will lock horns for the third-place spot 24 hours earlier in Lezama.

Nigeria 3-0 Lesotho: Super Eagles beat Crocodiles to end Afcon qualifiers unbeaten

Nigeria 3-0 Lesotho: Super Eagles beat Crocodiles to end Afcon qualifiers unbeaten

Gernot Rohr’s side finished the continental qualifying campaign at the top of their group after defeating Thabo Senong’s men in Lagos

Nigeria ended the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with a 3-0 victory over Lesotho at Teslim Balogun Stadium.

Goals from Victor Osimhen, Oghenekaro Etebo and Paul Onuachu helped the Super Eagles end the Afcon campaign unbeaten and finish at the top of the Group L table with 14 points.

Nigeria headed into the encounter having already secured their place at the biennial tournament, scheduled for Cameroon.

Coach Gernot Rohr made a few changes to the team that started their 1-0 victory over the Republic of Benin at Stade Charles de Gaulle on Friday.

The German tactician handed starts to Francis Uzoho Etebo and Tyronne Ebuehi, who did not feature against the Squirrels in Porto Novo.

Iwobi also returned to the starting XI after missing his side’s last outing as he tested positive for Covid-19, but was cleared to play against the Crocodiles by Caf after testing negative for the coronavirus.

The Super Eagles started the encounter impressively, dominating the opening 30 minutes and came close to opening the scoring in the 15th minute when Osimhen beat Lesotho goalkeeper Sekhoane Moerane after a fine combination with Kelechi Iheanacho, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

The West Africans continued to push for the opener and deservedly got it in the 22nd minute when Osimhen hit the back of the net with a fine effort.

The Napoli forward has now bagged five goals for the three-time African champions in the qualifying campaign.

Rohr’s men made several efforts to try and increase their lead before the half-time break but the Crocodiles frustrated their effort to keep the scoreline at 1-0.

After the restart, the West African giants continued with their dominating display with Iwobi firing a fine shot from the edge of the box but failed to ruffle Lesotho goalkeeper Moerane.

Etebo thereafter doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 50th minute after pouncing on a loose ball and the Super Eagles were close to increasing their lead three minutes later when Samuel Chukwueze beat his marker before unleashing a shot, but it narrowly missed the target.

Eight minutes before the end of the game, Genk forward Onuachu scored to seal the victory for the three-time African champions to end their campaign on a high.

Nigeria have now qualified for the last two editions of the Africa Cup of Nations after failing to feature in the 2017 outing.

Gabriel Jesus aiming to become 'proper striker' as Man City's 'best player in history' Aguero set to leave

The Brazilian has said he is hoping to become a more prolific scorer after the legendary forward's departure

Gabriel Jesus has admitted he must become more of a "proper striker" as he aims to replace the departing Sergio Aguero at Manchester City.

City confirmed on Monday that Aguero would be leaving the club at the end of the season, bringing a close to a glorious 10-year spell that saw him become the club's all-time top scorer.

Jesus, who has split playing time with Aguero since joining City in 2017, is poised to take on more responsibility after the Argentine departs.

What was said?

Speaking to Sky Sports, Jesus admitted he needed to adjust his style to help replace a player he called "the best player in the history of the club."

"I can learn a little bit [from him] but he's more of a proper striker than me, he scored more than me," Jesus said.

"He goes to the pitch and he scores. He's more striker than me, I can say that because I work with him every day and I play a lot with him.

"When we play together I score one, he scores two, I score two and he scores three. I think I'm going to learn a lot in these next years to become a proper striker who scores a lot.

"I have to go more in the box. Sometimes I don't go in the box, that's why I don't score a lot. Normally if you see the best strikers at the moment they all go to the box, some of them go outside the box to create and then go to the box.

"Not me, I think my football is... I go outside the box, I create with my friends and I wait for the goal. Sometimes I go and I score, but I have to put in my head that when I arrive, I score."

The bigger picture

Jesus, who turns 24 on Saturday, has proven to be an able deputy for Aguero at City, scoring 80 goals for the club in 183 appearances since joining from Palmeiras.

Aguero has proven to be an even more prolific scorer, however, and City have been linked with a number of high-profile replacements for the Argentine.

Borussia Dortmund's Erling Haaland has been heavily linked with a move to the Etihad, as well as Inter star Romelu Lukaku. Southampton forward Danny Ings has also been mentioned as a more affordable option.

Whatever the case, Jesus is likely to face continued competition for City's No.9 role even after Aguero has left the club.

James secures three points for 10-man Wales

Next time though? Competitively, it's Euro 2020. One year after they were meant to take to the field, Wales will square off with Switzerland in Group A while the Czech Republic face Scotland in Group D. It promises to be a fantastic summer of football - but until then, thank you for joining us and have a great week!

Jaroslav Silhavy will be left to rue that one though. It is a win, a draw and a loss from his side's first three qualifiers - and with a long wait until September now, he will have to ensure that his side do not stew for too long on what could have been in the Welsh capital.

Wherever Ryan Giggs is right now, he has just let out a very long breath. Robert Page has sneaked away with a major result despite less ball, less shots, less victorious duels in the middle and less passes. Wales are up and running on the road to Qatar.

A late header from Daniel James means that it is Wales who emerge triumphant in their second Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup UEFA qualifier against the Czech Republic - and that it is the hosts who move off the mark in Group E, to go a point behind their opponents with a game in hand. Full-time in Cardiff, it finishes Wales 1-0 Czech Republic.

90' + 4' FULL-TIME: WALES 1-0 CZECH REPUBLIC

90' + 2' Rodon! The Tottenham man might be the most popular Wales player in the dressing room tonight! The Czech Republic pull a ball back through a crowded box and find Celustka right in the middle - and it is a wild foot from the Welsh defender that deflects his shot away from a certain equaliser!

90' Buckle in; we're going to have four added minutes of injury time here.

89' We're creeping towards the final minutes of this match. Can Wales hang on to secure a crucial result on the road to Qatar?

86' The lack of an extra body for so much of the second half has restricted the visitors, that is for sure; having registered eight shots in the first half, they've had only two since the break.

84' Moore! Wales could have doubled their lead and put this one to bed now, but the substitute can't tuck it home, pushing a delivery from Lawrence past the right post.

79' James! That should have been the goal Wales so desperately craved! The Manchester United man and Bale are both through on goal chasing a short throughball, and Vaclik is afforded the time to scramble and cover. It's just not coming off for the hosts.

77' Now Wales are down a man as Roberts sees a second yellow - and a resultant red card! It's for a high elbow as he leaps up to challenge for a ball with Soucek, and the latter goes down. It's a bit soft, but the visitors will relish that call going their way. The Welshman is furious as he stalks off the pitch.

74' There is of course another major tournament Wales will be taking part in before the World Cup, if they get there, in the shape of Euro 2020. On this basis, it's hard to see just how they could repeat that remarkable run to the semi-finals they achieved in 2016.

72' It's been another one of those games where Gareth Bale hasn't quite risen to the occasion for Wales, but the blame can't be squared at his feet entirely. It's not been a particularly consistent midfield delivery from the hosts.

70' Darida! The Czech man isn't too far off the mark there, just pushing a right-footed shot over the goalmouth. It feels like it will be the visitors who will break the deadlock if anyone will.

68' Schick is the first Czech player to be sent off in a World Cup qualifier since Daniel Kolar was against Italy in September 2013.

66' James thinks he's timed his run to perfection for a throughball pinged downfield, but he's a fraction offside. Fine margins ensure that his run-in towards goal is checked by the linesman's flag.

64' That man advantage has been vastly advantageous for Wales with the ball at their feet; since the break, they have enjoyed almost two-thirds of possession in this game. But there's still no goal and the Czech counter is the more threatening so far.

60' Jaroslav Silhavy's side have taken the loss of Schick with a vengeance. They're ensuring that the tempo has been set at a higher rhythm and Wales are having a spot of trouble keeping up with it.

58' Provod can't believe it! The Czech Republic man latches onto a wonderful looping ball and beats out the Welsh defence to go one-on-one with Ward. The keeper comes out to the edge of the box and he cuts around him to find an open goal - and somehow, Lawrence manages to cut back across in time to block the shot. Herculean defending!

55' Celustka with the header now for the visitors and Ward rises to the occasion again to meet the finish nudged towards to him following Darida's delivery.

50' If Wales do not seize this game by the scruff of its neck and haul themselves ahead, they will be left to rue it for a long time. This is a prime opportunity now, with a man advantage, to land a crucial result they've otherwise looked rarely capable of finding.

48' A free-kick for the visitors after a lazy foul on Kudela makes for a comfortable save for Ward, thrown in as it is, but there's the end result of an altercation between Roberts and Schick. The former goes down and both sets of players are furiously protesting. What's gone on here?

46' We're back underway at Cardiff City Stadium. Are we in for a snoozefest again or can one side ignite this tie with a little bit of magic?

On this basis, Belgium need not fear any sleepless nights about not making it to the showpiece tournament next winter. Wales dragged themselves up to a third of overall possession there, but it's not been an inspirational evening by any stretch of the imagination.

Gareth Bale's close-range effort, saved by Tomas Vaclik, is the nearest that either side has come to breaking the deadlock of what has been an otherwise tepid Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifier clash in Cardiff. At half-time, it is Wales 0-0 Czech Republic.

45' HALF-TIME: WALES 0-0 CZECH REPUBLIC

44' Has Soucek got away with one there? The Czech midfielder looked to have bodychecked James following the latter's run into the visitors' box and the referee decides that there aren't sufficient grounds for a penalty. Wales may disagree with that one.

42' Lawrence, Williams and Mepham all intercede on some dangerous Czech possession and see off a pair of consecutive corners without concession in the end, Schick steering the final header well wide.

39' Ward rises to meet a Schick effort now as Wales' defence is unlocked all too easily by Jankto. Still nothing to separate these two sides on the scoreboard.

37' Gareth Bale still can't believe he's missed that one. Wales' subsequent corner allows him to try and smash a left-footed finish through a congested area to no luck, but that original effort was a sitter.

36' Bale! Oh, that has brought this game to life for a moment, as the Tottenham loanee launches himself onto a looping cross six yards out and bounces a volley low, one that Vaclik somehow palms over his crossbar. What a stop!

34' Not to say that this game is exactly a snore but it's about as soporific as the late rays of sunshine that have finally folded over the Cardiff horizon. There's surely a spark somewhere to light this one up, isn't there?

32' Darida cracks a free-kick over the Wales penalty area now, beating out everyone in the box and only able to watch his effort skim away for a goal-kick.

30' Ward is pressed into action for Wales at the back once more as a looping cross falls into the hosts' penalty area and is hoofed towards the left post amid a jumble of players.

28' Bale goes down inside the Czech box under some attention from Celustka but it is soft to say the least and the referee is not buying anything.

26' With a quarter of the game gone, the hosts have only had 28 per cent of possession so far. That is a number that will not leave Robert Page pleased.

24' Better work from Wales now as they hurry the Czech Republic around the field, pressing them back deep in an attempt to dislodge possession. They've been too happy to let them come to them so far.

22' Bale picks up a neat one-two cut-back and wins Wales their first corner now, but again, the set-piece delivery is left wanting, played short and then swiftly defused by the Czech defence.

20' It's with games like these - matches that just feel a little bit off the pace, a little bit sluggish - where the presence of a crowd could go a long way to lifting both teams. International tribalism in the stands is sorely lacking here.

18' Another Wales free-kick, this time out on the left edge rather than the centre-right flank, is tipped into the Czech penalty area from Rodon, only to beat everyone in the box and skim away for the visitors to reclaim.

16' A foul just inside the Czech half on Bale allows Rodon to curl a free-kick towards the box, but Wales find absolutely no purchase at the end of the delivery.

14' Jankto finds the side netting! The Sampdoria midfielder really is taking the game to the hosts so far and he feels like he's creeping closer to finding his target.

13' Wales still feel like they are finding their rhythms here, but it is early doors. On the sidelines, Robert Page watches his side impassively.

11' Jankto steps up to launch another Czech shot again and this one isn't covered by Ward. It runs well wide of the left post though, skittering away over the turf. He could be the danger-man here.

10' Wales last started a World Cup qualifying campaign with consecutive defeats in September 2012 with their opening game back then also coming against Belgium. They'll be keen not to repeat history.

8' It's not just a big night for Wales, but one for their captain Gareth Bale in particular. The striker's comments over the international break surrounding his future has served as an unwanted distraction; he'll need to step up to the plate on this balmy Cardiff evening.

6' The visitors, decked out in an all-banana-coloured strip today, may be ranked well over 20 spots below their hosts, but such listings can be deceptive. Wales will have to be alert to the danger through the middle here.

4' What on earth is Celustka doing there? He taps an innocuous ball back into his own box with way too little power and Wilson races forward, almost besting Vaclik to it six yards out from goal. That could have been first blood to Wales.

3' The early threat is with the visitors, and it is Jankto who unleashes an initial shot from the edge of the Welsh penalty area. It's soft, and tame, leaving Ward untroubled.

1' We are underway in this 2022 World Cup qualifier between Wales and the Czech Republic!

The teams have emerged in Cardiff for the national anthems and we are moments away from kick-off.

Wales and the Czech Republic last faced each other way back in June 2007 in a European Championship qualifier, drawing 0-0 at the Millennium Stadium. Wales didn't make the tournament; their visitors did.

There are a few faces missing of course for Wales, but not due to injury. Hal-Robson Kanu, Tyler Roberts and Rabbi Matondo were all sent home earlier this week for a protocol breach - but Page has been able to welcome back James Lawrence after Covid-19 restrictions kept him out of the Mexico game.

Subs: Matej Vydra, Patrizio Stronati, Antonin Barak, Jakub Pesek, David Zima, David Pavelka, Lukas Masopust, Pavel Kaderábek, Michal Krmencik, Ales Mandous, Tomas Pekhart, Jiri Pavlenka.

CZECH REPUBLIC (4-2-3-1): Tomas Vaclik; Vladimir Coufal, Ondrej Celustka, Ondrej Kudela, Jan Boril; Tomas Holes, Tomas Soucek; Lukas Provod, Vladimír Darida, Jakub Jankto; Patrik Schick.

Subs: Ben Cabango, Wayne Hennessey, Adam Davies, Josh Sheehan, Kieffer Moore, Jonathan Williams, Chris Gunter, Tom Lawrence, Brennan Johnson, Rhys Norrington-Davies, Dylan Levitt.

WALES (3-5-2): Danny Ward; Chris Mepham, James Lawrence, Joe Rodon, Connor Roberts, Harry Wilson, Ethan Ampadu, Joe Morrell, Neco Williams; Daniel James, Gareth Bale.

With their German contingent of players available once more, skipper Vladimir Darida and Bayer Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick are the two faces drafted into the side that faced Belgium for the visitors.

It's an all-new look XI for Wales from the side who beat Mexico in a friendly over the weekend - or rather, it is back to a similar lineup to the one that faced Belgium. Joe Allen is injured, meaning Joe Morrell gets the nod from Page.

A hard-fought point against a Belgium side that laid the smackdown on Wales a few days before means that victory for the visitors will likely keep them jointly at the summit of Group E. Defeat allows Wales to trim the gap to just one point with a game in hand over them.

Indeed, Jaroslav Silhavy knows that his nation arguably stand a better chance of reaching only a second World Cup in their current guise than ever before. They came third behind Germany and Northern Ireland in qualifying last time out ahead of Russia - but a win here could prove fatal to their rivals.

Ranked at 18th in the world, the hosts - still under Robert Page's leadership for now - would be feasibly backed as the logical runner-up behind Belgium among the sides jostling for a second bite of the qualification cherry. But it is their visitors in the capital that pose the biggest threat to their ambitions.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup UEFA qualifiers, as Wales look to bounce back from opening-day defeat against joint-group leaders Czech Republic in Group E at Cardiff City Stadium.

Netherlands hammer Gibraltar in 7-0 goalfest

That's all for today, goodbye!

That win lifts Netherlands up to second in the table, above Montenegro and Norway on goal difference. Their attention will now be turning to the Euros in June. As for Gibraltar, they stay rooted to the bottom of the table after losing their first three qualifiers and they'll be hoping to do better against Latvia in September.

Netherlands sweep aside Gibraltar with a 7-0 win. It was only 1-0 at the break, with Berghuis breaking the deadlock 41 minutes in with a curling effort. Netherlands were clinical in the second half though with Luuk de Jong netting a second at the near post before they added three more in a four-minute period through Depay, Wijnaldum and Malen. Van de Beek came off the bench to slot a sixth past Gibraltar before Depay rounded it off with a close-range tap-in for his second of the game.

90' + 8' FULL-TIME: GIBRALTAR 0-7 NETHERLANDS.

90' + 7' De Ligt gives away a corner and it's a good cross into the box from Mouelhi. He's looking for Wiseman in the middle but it bounces off the back of Gravenberch and goes back out of play.

90' + 5' A Netherlands corner is cleared to De Barr and he does really well to break out of his own half despite having three defenders around him. He spots Walker's run through the middle and tries to pick him out, but it's short and Gravenberch wins it back.

90' + 2' GOOD SAVE! Netherlands counter quickly following Gibraltar's corner and Depay cuts inside from the right to get into space. He has Van de Beek in the middle but chooses to go for goal, looking for his hat-trick, but Goldwin parries it away at his near post.

90' Gibraltar have a chance to break out of their own half with Mouelhi chasing Moulds' long clearance down the left. He latches on to it and tries to play an early cross into De Barr and ends up winning a corner off Gravenberch.

87' Depay finds himself in a pocket of space just outside the box so he decides to go for goal. He's trying to catch Goldwin out at his near post and curls his shot towards the bottom left corner, but it's always swerving well wide of the target.

84' Wijndal has a lot of space to run into down the left and he curls a great cross into the box when he gets into the final third. Babel is running onto it at the far post but Chipolina makes an important interception ahead of him to hook it clear.

79' Luuk de Jong is the first Dutch national team player to score in three consecutive competitive games for the national team since Arjen Robben in 2017.

76' WHAT A MISS! Berghuis whips another great cross into the far post from the right and Wijndal cushions his header across goal for Wijnaldum to run onto. He's stood next to the post and he flicks his header just wide of the target.

76' SAVE! Goldwin is straight into the action as he comes rushing off his line to close down Luuk de Jong and stop his run into the box. The ball loops up for Malen and Goldwin is there gets back to push it away.

72' Coleing has stayed down after taking a goal-kick and it looks like he's done something to his hamstring as he kicked the ball. The medical team are signalling to the bench and it looks like he's going to have to go off.

70' CLOSE! De Barr gives the ball away just outside his own box and Wijndal quickly lays it off to Malen. He turns away from Sergeant to get into space but ends up dragging at his shot and dragging it wide of the near post.

68' Gibraltar are enjoying their first real bit of possession in the second half, but Walker can't find a way past Wijndal on the left. He's forced to go back to Chipolina, putting his defence under pressure again and the captain hooks it to safety.

66' It's all gone wrong for Gibraltar and they're looking very shaky at the back as Netherlands push forward once again. Berghuis swings yet another cross in from the left which none of the defenders go for and Coleing has to come off his line to collect it.

59' Berghuis is the first Netherlands player to score the opening goal in consecutive games since Depay managed it in November 2017.

57' GOOD SAVE! Depay plays a good throughball into Berghuis on the edge of the box and again, none of the defenders close him down. He aims his shot across goal, but Coleing gets down quickly to push it out for a corner.

52' Blind has stayed down holding his knee after the coming together with De Barr and he looks to be in a lot of pain. He's getting treatment on it now, but it's not looking good as the stretcher is being brought onto the field.

51' De Barr makes a brilliant driving run through the middle of the field, weaving away from De Light to get into the box. He goes to ground when he gets into the box under pressure from Blind, but there's not much in it and the referee waves away the penalty claims.

50' Wijndal is trying to make something happen down the left for Netherlands, but Gibraltar are crowding him out and making it difficult to get forward. They switch it out to Berghuis on the left, but his cross is collected by Coleing.

48' Netherlands have started the second half the way they finished the first as they continue to keep Gibraltar penned back in their own half. Depay plays a one-two with Luuk de Jong before going to ground in the box under pressure from Chipolina, but the referee waves away the penalty claims.

46' Netherlands get us back underway for the second half!

De Boer will be pleased to see his side go in ahead at the break, but they really have struggled to break down Gibraltar at times and he will want to see a big improvement in front of goal in the second half. Ribas will be pleased with his team's performance so far as they've dealt with Netherlands' threat well and he'll be hoping for more of the same.

Berghuis' goal gives Netherlands a 1-0 lead over Gibraltar at the break. Netherlands dominated the first half, having a total of 19 shots on goal. They couldn't find a way through until the 41st minute though when Wijnaldum touched it back to Berghuis and he curled a brilliant strike past Coleing and into the far corner. The visitors could've had more if not for Coleing, who made great saves to deny De Ligt, Klaassen and Wijndal.

45' + 2' HALF-TIME: GIBRALTAR 0-1 NETHERLANDS.

45' GREAT SAVE! Frenkie de Jong's cross is being watched by Wijndal on the left of the box and he hits it first time on the volley when it falls to him. It takes a big deflection off Chipolina and Coleing makes a brilliant reflex save to push it away from close range.

43' Netherlands are still keeping the pressure on Gibraltar here and the hosts just can't get out of their own half at the moment. Depay tries to play in Luuk de Jong in the middle with a throughball, but it's cut out by Sergeant.

40' GREAT SAVE! It's a brilliant cross into the box from Berghuis on the right and Luuk de Jong touches it back to Klaassen. He gets the ball out from under his feet, and drills a low shot to the bottom-right corner, but Coleing is there to push it off the line.

37' Netherlands just can't find a way through Gibraltar's backline and Ronan makes an important interception in midfield before trying to set De Barr on the counter. He's quickly closed down by Berghuis though and he can't get out of his own half.

35' Netherlands are still finding a lot of space down the left and Wijndal swings an early cross into the box to pick out Klaassen. His header hits Wiseman before rebounding onto him and going out for a Gibraltar goal-kick.

33' Wiseman puts a long throw-in into the box for Gibraltar and Blind's clearance only goes as far as Annesley. He heads it to Walker, who brings it down and sets himself for a shot, but he used his arm to control it and Netherlands win a free-kick.

29' Jolley steps in front of Luuk de Jong to intercept Blind's pass and he tries to set De Barr on the counter. He's bundled to the ground by De Ligt and Gibraltar have a free-kick which will ease the pressure on them at the moment.

27' Gibraltar just can't get a touch on the ball at the moment and Netherlands are on the attack again. Depay is finding a lot of space down the left and he pulls it back for Klaassen just outside the box. He tries a throughball into Luuk de Jong, but it rolls kindly for Coleing.

25' GOOD SAVE! Chipolina's clearance falls to Dumfries on the right and he pulls it back for Wijnaldum who's in space on the edge of the box. He fires a low shot towards the bottom left corner and Coleing gets down to push it away with a strong hand.

23' GREAT CHANCE! The Gibraltar defenders are asking for offside against Depay, but he timed his run perfectly to latch onto Wijndal's cross. He whips a good cross into the far post where Dumfries meets it, but he ends up heading his effort wide of the far post.

21' Luuk de Jong manages to bundle the ball into Klaassen at the byline on the left and he pulls it back for Depay. He turns away from two Gibraltar defenders to get in on goal, but he drags at his shot and it rolls wide of the near post.

19' De Barr was chasing Ronan's long ball over the top and Krul came rushing off his line to collect it but caught the forward in the head with his knee. He's received treatment on it and he's going to be able to come back on.

17' DOUBLE SAVE! Depay swings his corner into the box and Berghuis pulls back to the edge of the box to curl a shot on goal. Luuk de Jong is closing in on it but Coleing manages to push the ball away before smothering Depay's bicycle kick at the near post.

16' It's a good corner into the box for Gibraltar and Netherlands don't get their lines clear as Blind's clearance falls to Chipolina. He heads it back into the middle and De Barr is setting himself for a shot just as De Ligt gets back to clear his lines.

14' Gibraltar have everyone back in their own box as Netherlands push forward again and the visitors switch it out to Wijndal on the left. He steps away from Wiseman before firing a shot towards the near top corner, but he fires it high over the crossbar.

12' Netherlands are keeping the pressure on Gibraltar here as Depay drives forward down the left, before cutting inside and wrongfooting Sergeant. He drills a shot towards the far post, but Wiseman gets back to makes the block.

10' Netherlands have a lot of bodies in the box, but Frenkie de Jong chooses to switch play out to Dumfries, who's in a lot of space on the right, instead. It's too high for him though and he ends up heading it out of play.

8' Berghuis is finding a lot of space early on and he cuts inside from the right again before floating a lovely cross into the box towards Depay. He can't bring it down though and Chipolina clears the danger for Gibraltar.

6' Berghuis draws his defender into him as he drives through the middle before picking out Luuk de Jong with a cross with the outside of his boot. He tries to play the return ball, but Berghuis is blocked off and it rolls straight out of play.

4' Berghuis has gone down after being caught late by De Barr and the referee has called across the forward to have a word with him as he's already given away a couple of free-kicks and he's going to have to be careful.

2' Netherlands are seeing a lot of the ball in the opening minutes, but it's patient play from them as they try to work it around Gibraltar, who have dropped back to sit deep in their own half.

1' Walker gets the game underway for Gibraltar!

The teams are out on the pitch now, with kick-off just moments away.

This is the first meeting between Gibraltar and Netherlands in any competition.

Frank de Boer was clearly pleased with his team's performance against Latvia last time out and is taking no chances today as he names an unchanged side for this game.

Julio Ribas makes nine changes to the side that lost to Montenegro on Saturday, with only Sergeant and Jolley retaining their places from that match.

NETHERLANDS SUBS: Calvin Stengs, Ryan Gravenberch, Patrick van Aanholt, Ryan Babel, Marten de Roon, Donyell Malen, Kenny Tete, Marco Bizot, Joel Veltman, Steven Bergwijn, Donny van de Beek, Maarten Stekelenburg.

NETHERLANDS STARTING XI (4-2-3-1): Tim Krul; Denzel Dumfries, Matthijs de Ligt, Daley Blind, Owen Wijndal; Georginio Wijnaldum, Frenkie de Jong; Steven Berghuis, Davy Klaassen, Memphis Depay; Luuk de Jong.

GIBRALTAR SUBS: Dylan Borge, Kyle Goldwin, Ethan Santos, Bradley Banda, Kelvin Morgan, Dylan Peacock, Antony Moulds, Kyle Casciaro, Reece Styche, Julian Valarino, Graeme Torrilla, Erin Barnett.

GIBRALTAR STARTING XI (5-4-1): Dayle Coleing; Scott Wiseman, Jack Sergeant, Roy Chipolina, Aymen Mouelhi, Louie John Annesley; Kian Ronan, Lee Casciaro, Ethan Jolley, Liam Walker; Tjay De Barr.

Netherlands' qualifying campaign began with a surprise 4-2 defeat to Turkey but they bounced back with a comfortable 2-0 win over Latvia on Saturday to get them off the mark. They face a Gibraltar side that have suffered back-to-back defeats in their first two matches, being well-beaten by both Norway and Montenegro and they're looking for their first win since October 2020 when they beat Liechtenstein in the Nations League.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the World Cup Qualifier in Group G between Gibraltar and Netherlands at Victoria Stadium!

Portugal survive early scare to beat Luxembourg

Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.

Luxembourg don't return to action until September when World Cup qualifying resumes. Portugal play Spain in a friendly game in their next outing in preparation for the European Championships in June.

Portugal come from behind to secure their second win of their World Cup qualifying campaign, defeating Luxembourg 3-1 at the Stade Josy Barthel. Gerson Rodrigues put the home side ahead with a diving header, notching his second goal in as many games. Diogo Jota equalised before the break with a close-range header. The Selecao took control in the second half as Cristiano Ronaldo found the net, while Joao Palhinha scored his first international goal to deliver the victory.

90' + 3' FULL-TIME: LUXEMBOURG 1-3 PORTUGAL

90' + 3' Sanches has a late chance in the box, but he fails to get the ball out of his feet before being closed down.

90' + 2' Oliveira tries to weave his way through orange shirts on the edge of the Luxembourg box, but gets crowded out before he can shoot.

90' There will be three minutes of added time.

86' OFF! Chanot receives his marching orders for blocking off the run of Sanches. He receives his second yellow card for the incident and the referee brandishes the red to the Luxembourg defender.

85' A concern for the visitors as Neto requires treatment on the field, although he looks okay to continue.

79' MISS AND SAVE! Cancelo angles a cross to the back post from the right flank, but Ronaldo guides his header across the face of goal and away from the net. Neto gathers and tries to force a strike towards goal from a tight angle, only to be denied by Moris.

78' RONALDO MISSES A SITTER! Chanot plays a backpass straight to the forward and he only has to beat Moris. However, the keeper spreads himself to deny the Juventus man and then stops the rebound. Rafa joins the attack and picks out Ronaldo to convert, but the offside flag goes up against him. A rare misfire from the legendary striker.

77' Gerson gets in front of Ronaldo down the left flank to win a free-kick. Ronaldo has a goal this evening, but he has not had it all his own way.

74' Portugal are trying to find an element of control on the contest, but the home side keep pressing them in possession. It has been a spirited effort from Holtz's men.

72' WIDE! Barreiro breaks forward to the edge of the box and drills a left-footed strike towards goal. However, his effort lacks accuracy and goes wide of the target.

71' SAVE! Thill angles a deep cross to the back post that travels towards the top-left corner. Lopes has to backpedal to claw the ball over the bar. That was a close call for the Selecao.

66' Rodrigues turns in the final third and goes for a strike that is deflected behind by Fonte.

64' Luxembourg are continuing to grind on the field. They've not given up hope of forcing of positive result.

62' Neves latches on to a loose clearance from Gerson and goes for a powerful drive at goal, only to send his effort well over the bar.

61' Jans latches on to an offload from Sinani down the right flank, but he can only steer a tame cross into the hands of Lopes at the near post.

59' OFF THE BAR! Jota is denied a second by the woodwork. He rises highest at the near post connect with Sanches' corner from the left flank. He loops an effort across goal that clips the bar and cannot be turned goalwards by his team-mates before Moris gathers.

58' Jota makes a driving run into the box, but is halted by a solid challenge by Chanot. Portugal still have a corner.

56' Sinani wins the ball in the Portugal half and clips a ball over the top, but Rodrigues is not on the same wavelength as his team-mate.

54' WIDE! Rodrigues makes a run down the left flank and runs unopposed into the inside channel. He lines up a strike on his right foot that he powers just wide of the left post.

52' SAVE! Mendes sees his blast turned past the post by Moris. Sanches releases the run of the full-back into the left inside channel. Mendes tries to hit the bottom-right corner, only to see his effort brilliantly saved by the Luxembourg keeper.

48' Ronaldo latches on to Cancelo's precise cross from the right flank, but he moves a fraction early and is caught offside. He heads his effort straight at Moris anyway.

47' WIDE! Sanches twists and turns to fire at goal from the edge of the box, but his effort is deflected wide of the right post by Barreiro.

46' We're back underway in this World Cup qualifying clash.

Luxembourg will feel disappointed to head into the break level after playing so well in the first half. It took time for Portugal to heat up in the final third, but they put pressure on the hosts, which eventually told as Jota was on the spot. Expect them to up the ante once more in the second half to push ahead.

It's all square in the World Cup qualifying clash between Luxembourg and Portugal at the break. The home side took a deserved lead through Gerson Rodrigues as he notched his second goal in as many games with a diving header. However, the Selecao upped the ante and levelled just before the whistle as Diogo Jota nodded home from close range from Pedro Neto's cross.

45' + 2' HALF-TIME: LUXEMBOURG 1-1 PORTUGAL

45' There will be one minute of added time.

45' RONALDO MISSES A GREAT CHANCE!!!! The forward latches on to a cross from the left flank from Mendes and connects with a header. However, he can only send his effort over the bar from six yards out.

44' Fonte climbs at the back post to connect with a corner from Cancelo, but he can only head a tame effort into the ground and straight at Moris.

43' WHAT A SAVE! Moris denies Sanches with a one-handed stop, turning his blast over the bar. Ronaldo works an offload back to his team-mate to line up a drive from 25 yards. Sanches connects well with his strike towards the middle of the net. Moris reacts to palm it over the bar with a firm hand.

42' Fonte tries to angle a ball over the top for Cancelo to chase down the right flank, but the full-back is caught offside.

39' Joao Felix is struggling with an injury and has to be helped off the field. His involvement in the game could be at an end.

39' Ronaldo has been a spectator in the first half outside of a free-kick that was saved by Moris. Portugal have to work him into the contest.

37' The resulting corner from Silva travels to Joao Felix in the left inside channel, but his blast is charged down by a wall of orange shirts.

37' Cancelo drives down the right flank and he wins a corner for the visitors. Portugal are beginning to up the ante in the final third.

36' SAVE! Moris keeps Luxembourg ahead with a fine stop. Silva is played into space on the edge of the box by Fonte and he lets fly with a low left-footed strike. It travels towards the bottom-left corner before the keeper palms it behind for a corner.

35' Holtz will be thrilled with his side's performance. They've taken the game to the visitors and have a deserved lead.

34' Sinani robs Mendes of possession on the right flank and he chips the ball towards the six-yard box. Rodrigues puts Fonte under pressure, but the ball just does not fall for the forward as the veteran defender does just enough to clear the danger.

33' Vincent Thill cuts in from the left flank and he angles a cross towards to the back post that just evades Sinani.

29' CHANCE! Sanches is denied by Moris. Cancelo starts the move with a neat piece of skill to skip past Gerson. He cuts a ball towards the edge of the box where Sanches strikes, but his low effort is well stopped by the Luxembourg keeper.

27' Rodrigues holds the ball well in the centre circle and draws the foul from Fonte. Luxembourg are frustrating the visitors.

26' Portugal have been passive in the early stages of the game and have allowed the home side to knock the ball around the pitch. Santos will be concerned about his side's intensity levels.

24' SAVE! Ronaldo goes for the blast from the left flank, but he smashes his attempt straight at Moris, who beats the ball away from danger.

23' Joao Felix makes a neat turn on the edge of the box on the left flank and he draws a foul from Martins. Ronaldo will be very interested in this set-piece.

22' Olivier Thill latches on to a loose pass from Fonte and surges forward to the edge of the box. He has support but misplaces his offload straight to Dias. That was a chance for the home side.

21' Ronaldo breaks in behind the Luxembourg defence to latch on to a long ball forward from Dias, but he is caught offside as he takes possession on the edge of the box.

20' Joao Felix tries to get the better of Chanot down the left flank, but the defender blocks off his run and gives away a free-kick.

17' Sanches brings down Vincent Thrill on the right flank, but the Luxembourg midfielder sends his free-kick straight into the hands of Lopes.

15' BLOCK! PInto whips a low cross into the box from the left flank towards Sinani. He shoots first time in the box, only to see his effort blocked by Fonte.

14' Silva collects on the right flank and he arcs a dangerous cross towards the back post, which evades everyone in the box and travels behind for a goal-kick.

13' Jota is played into space down the left flank and he has space and time to deliver a cross that Chanot rises to clear at the near post.

12' Holtz will be thrilled with his side's start to the game. They've continued the momentum built in the win over Ireland.

10' Joao Felix makes a surge towards the Luxembourg defence, only to be halted by a fine challenge by Chanot.

9' Silva wins the ball on the edge of the Luxembourg box and he feeds Jota, but the forward cannot work his way through the home side's defence.

8' Ronaldo combines with Joao Felix down the left flank, but the full-back can only send his cross straight at Moris.

6' Moris launches a long ball forward from the back with the visitors playing a high line, but Sinani moves too soon and is caught offside.

4' Luxembourg have made a bright start to the contest and have put the visitors under pressure.

2' Rodrigues sends a pass down the left inside channel for Olivier Thill to chase, but the ball just evades the winger.

1' We're underway in this World Cup qualifying contest.

The players are out on the pitch so we should be underway shortly.

Portugal have made four changes to their line-up that drew against Serbia in their last outing. Cancelo reverts to right-back as Cedric drops out of the side for Mendes. Bruno Fernandes and Danilo Pereira miss out for Santos' men, while Oliveira drops to the bench. Sanches, Neves and Joao Felix get the nod to start tonight.

Luxembourg have made two changes to their side from their win over Ireland last time out. Pinto and Gerson come into the side in the backline as Mahmutovic and Martins drop to the bench. Sinani continues to lead the line in the final third supported by Rodrigues and Olivier Thill.

PORTUGAL SUBS: Jose Sa, Luis Neto, Domingos Duarte, Andre Silva, Joao Palhinha, Sergio Oliveira, Rafa, Pedro Neto, Cedric Soares, Rui Silva.

PORTUGAL (4-3-3): Anthony Lopes; Joao Cancelo, Jose Fonte, Ruben Dias, Nuno Mendes; Ruben Neves, Renato Sanches, Bernardo Silva; Joao Felix, Cristiano Ronaldo, Diogo Jota.

LUXEMBOURG SUBS: Enes Mahmutovic, Florian Bohnert, Timothe Rupil, Ralph Schon, Eldin Dzogovic, Maurice Deville, Aldin Skenderovic, Edvin Muratovic, Sebastien Thill, Marvin Martins, Lucas Fox.

LUXEMBOURG (4-1-4-1): Anthony Moris; Laurent Jans, Maxime Chanot, Lars Gerson, Michael Pinto; Christopher Martins Pereira; Olivier Thill, Leandro Barreiro Martins, Vincent Thill, Gerson Rodrigues; Daniel Sinani.

Portugal were denied a win in their opening match of qualifying due to a controversial call. Cristiano Ronaldo believed that his late effort had crossed the line, only to be denied by the linesman. Fernando Santos' men spurned a 2-0 lead in the contest after Diogo Jota notched early strikes in Belgrade. However, Aleksandr Mitrovic and Filip Kostic found the net to guide the home side to a point, aided by the late call against Ronaldo. As a result, the Selecao have work to do tonight.

Luxembourg pulled off a massive upset last time out to defeat the Republic of Ireland in their opening match of qualifying. Luc Holtz's men held tough at the back at the Aviva Stadium to frustrate their opponents. They then snatched the three points in the closing stages courtesy of a late strike from Gerson Rodrigues. Despite their success, they face a mammoth challenge to avoid a loss tonight against Portugal.

Good evening and welcome to the World Cup qualifying clash between Luxembourg and Portugal at the Stade Josy Barthel.

Zungu: Scottish FA hands Bafana Bafana star six-match ban for breaching Covid-19 protocols

The 28-year-old and his teammates were also fined by the club, who then contacted the SFA over the incident

South Africa international Bongani Zungu is among the five Rangers FC players that have been slapped with a ban for breaking coronavirus protocol.

Midfielder Zungu, striker Dapo Mebude, goalkeeper Brian Kinnear, defenders Nathan Patterson and Calvin Bassey have all been banned for six matches by the Scottish Football Association.

The quintet broke Covid-19 rules by attending a party in Scotland last month and Zungu, Patterson and Bassey were then told to stop training with the team following the protocol breach.

The trio then apologised to the Rangers fans on their return to training under manager Steven Gerrard last month.

Striker Mebude and goalkeeper Kinnear are currently out on loan at Queens of the South and Annan Athletic, respectively.

Zungu, who missed Bafana Bafana's 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Ghana and Sudan last week, will now watch Rangers' next four games from the sidelines.

This is because four of the matches will be immediate and two games will be suspended until the end of the current campaign.

The SFA released the following statement on Tuesday.

Alleged Parties in Breach: Calvin Bassey, Brian Kinnear, Dapo Mebude, Nathan Patterson, Bongani Zungu (Rangers FC)

Joseph Esso: Algerian club MC Alger snap up Dreams FC striker

The attacker is set to continue his career in Algeria's Ligue 1 after sealing a move away from the Ghana Premier League

Dreams FC striker Joseph Esso has signed for Algerian side MC Alger, the buying club have announced.

The 24-year-old joins Maloudia in a three-year deal after impressing for Still Believe in the Ghana Premier League.

He becomes the third Ghanaian to ditch the GPL for the Algerian Ligue 1, following in the footsteps of Daniel Lomotey and Kwame Opoku.

"Algeria's MC administration informs its dear supporters it has bought the contract of 24-year-old Dreams Ghanaian striker Joseph Esso to MC for three years, and the administration will serve to recruit one or two players to support this transfer. Long live the newborn," Maloudia have announced on their official Facebook page.

Esso's transfer comes only two days after leaving Ghana's camp following their matches against South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, although he did not feature in either.

While this was his first call-up to the main Black Stars side, Esso has made headlines playing for the B outfit as he netted twice at the 2019 Wafu Zone B Cup of Nations in Senegal, where Ghana finished as runners-up.

After the tournament, he was heavily linked to Sudanese side Al-Hilal Omdurman but no deal materialised.

So far in the Premier League this season, the 24-year-old has netted 10 times in 16 matches for Dreams FC, standing as the current second top scorer, just two strikes behind Diawisie Taylor of Karela United.

Esso, one time on the books of Ebusua Dwarfs, joined Dreams in August last year after failing to reach a contract renewal agreement with 19-time GPL champions Heart of Oak. He was linked with league giants Asante Kotoko before sealing a deal with Dreams.

Earlier this month, Algerian side USM Algiers announced the acquisition of Asante Kotoko striker Opoku in a three-year deal, the striker having scored seven times in 15 matches.

Nearly two months earlier, Wafa striker Lomotey, at the time the leading scorer in the GPL, joined ES Setif in a three-year contract, having struck eight times in nine matches.

Former Liverpool forward Yan Dhanda disappointed with India's 6-0 defeat against UAE

The Swansea City player was happy to see 11 Indian players make their international debuts in the friendly matches...

Indian-origin player Yan Dhanda expressed his disappointment over India's 0-6 thrashing at the hands of UAE in an international friendly tie on Monday in Dubai.

After a valiant 1-1 draw against Oman in their first friendly game, Igor Stimac's side was handed their heaviest defeat in the last 10 years.

Former Liverpool youth team player Dhanda, who currently plies his trade with English Championship side Swansea City, was disappointed by India's defeat but also expressed his delight that the Blue Tigers had handed debuts to as many as 11 new players in the two friendly matches.

What did Yan Dhanda tweet?

"Disappointed at the result against UAE yesterday. Indian Football, keep working hard lads and positive results will come for sure. Good to see Igor Stimac giving new players opportunities."

Kenya coach Mulee gives notice to Wanyama, Timbe, Omolo, Johanna: 'I have no Stars'

The tactician has insisted he will consider players who are performing for their clubs, whether they are playing locally or abroad

Harambee Stars coach Jacob 'Ghost' Mulee has warned Kenya's foreign-based players that they are not guaranteed a place in the national team if they are not performing well for their clubs.

In the Africa Cup of Nations Group G qualifiers against Egypt and Togo, the tactician overlooked captain Victor Wanyama, midfielders Eric Johana and Johanna Omolo, winger Ayub Timbe as well as goalkeepers Arnold Origi and Patrick Matasi.

Players plying their trade in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League were given an opportunity to shine and they did not disappoint.

"In my team, I don't have stars but performing players," Mulee told Goal on Tuesday.

"Look at the players we left out, they are not playing at their clubs more often. They do not have playing time; why should I consider them while we have those who are consistently performing for their teams?

"As long as you are playing and delivering for your club, it means you are ready to be considered. I will not call you in the team just because you are abroad. Currently, my stars are those who did the job in Togo.

"However, they have to remain consistent at club level to be considered in the forthcoming assignments."

The tactician has further hinted at his plans for the World Cup qualifiers, where Kenya are in Group E alongside West Africa giants Mali, neighbours Uganda, and Rwanda.

"Regarding the World Cup qualifiers, we cannot rely on Fifa rankings; Mali are a good side, same with Uganda and we all know Rwanda are coming up well," Mulee continued.

"All our opponents were part of the African Nations Championship, but looking at our team, players are hungry for success and it will play a massive role in helping us perform better.

"We will create a stronger team with the players who are playing abroad."

Kenya ended their unsuccessful campaign to Cameroon in the third position in their group with seven points that came from four draws, a win, and a loss.

Togo had to be content with a place at the bottom of the table with just two points that came from draws, against Kenya and Comoros.

Seven-time Afcon champions Egypt topped the group with 12 points while Comoros came in second with three points fewer, after losing to the Pharaohs on matchday six.

As a result, they will be among the teams to take part in the biennial competition.
