England U21s eliminated from European Championship by last-minute strike

Domagoj Bradaric popped up to send Croatia through to the last eight at the Young Lions' expense with a wonderful late goal

England Under-21s came within seconds of a remarkable great escape in the European Championship, only to see a last-minute strike knock them out of the competition.

Aidy Boothroyd's charges led 2-0 against Croatia going into the final moments of their last group game.

That result would have seen them through to the quarters, but Domagoj Bradaric had other ideas as he sent them crashing out with a stunning goal from distance.

The end for the Young Lions

England went into the last round of matches in Group D needing a minor miracle after tasting defeat in their opening two clashes against Switzerland and Portugal.

In order to progress, the Young Lions were obliged to beat Croatia by a two-goal margin and hope that Portugal beat the Swiss by three goals or more.

Portugal came through with a 3-0 win to record a perfect nine points in the group, while goals from Eberechi Eze and Curtis Jones gave England the required margin to go through.

Bradaric's 91st minute hit, however, turned the tables in favour of Croatia, who join Portugal in the last eight.

The runners-up, Switzerland and England all finished with three points, but it was the Balkans side who qualified by virtue of their superior goal difference - an advantage of a single goal that would have been in Boothroyd's charges' favour were it not for Wednesday's dramatic finish.

The bigger picture

This latest elimination confirms England's underwhelming record at U21 in recent years.

They also failed to advance past the group stage in 2019, while five out of their last six campaigns have finished in that phase.

The nation has fared better in other age groups, most notably achieving a double triumph in the U20 World Cup and U19 European Championship back in 2017.

Batshuayi admits he feels trusted with Belgium but not at Crystal Palace

The on-loan Chelsea striker has started just seven Premier League matches this season under Roy Hodgson

Michy Batshuayi is happy to be with the Belgium national team, admitting he feels like he is trusted there but not at his club side Crystal Palace.

Batshuayi scored the opener in Belgium's 8-0 World Cup win over Belarus on Tuesday, equalling his goal total for the entire season at Palace.

The 27-year-old, who is on loan at Palace from Chelsea, has admitted he is frustrated with life at Roy Hodgson's side.

What was said?

"I get a breath of renewed energy when I come into the national team, because it's very hard for me at my club," Batshuayi said after the match against Belarus.

"The club and the national team are different. The coach, the team members and the system are different from that at Palace.

"With the Red Devils, I feel a lot of trust from the coach; trust that I do not get there [at Palace].

"With [Belgium head coach Roberto] Martinez, we talk to each other a lot, even when I'm back at my club. I give 200 per cent not to disappoint him."

How has Batshuayi fared for club and country?

Batshuayi has been prolific for Belgium since making his debut in 2015, scoring 22 goals in 33 international appearances.

At the club level, however, it has been a mixed bag for the striker since he joined Chelsea from Marseille in 2016.

Batshuayi has failed to establish himself as a regular at Stamford Bridge, though he has been a valuable contributor off the bench at various points in his Chelsea career.

The striker has also spent time on loan at Borussia Dortmund and Valencia before he was sent on loan again to Palace ahead of the current season.

The 2020-21 campaign has been a trying one for Batshuayi, who has scored just one goal in 18 appearances for Palace, making nine starts.

Batshuayi's Chelsea deal expires at the end of the season, leaving the Belgian's club future in doubt.

Afcon Qualifier: Sierra Leone to appeal Caf’s decision on Benin match

Having been informed by the football body that they will take on the Squirrels in June, the West Africans have questioned the decision

The Sierra Leone Football Association has declared they will appeal against the decision of the Confederation of African Football to fix a new date for their clash against Benin Republic.

The Africa Cup of Nations Group L encounter could not take place as planned on Tuesday, March 30 at the National Stadium, Freetown due to a Covid-19 controversy.

Michel Dussuyer’s Squirrels arrived at the match venue, but they refused to leave their bus after being told less than an hour before kick-off that Steve Mounie and five others had tested positive for the virus.

After hours of wait, the crunch game did not take place. However, Caf announced on Wednesday the match will take place during the June international window.

“The Africa Cup of Nations organizing committee has decided to postpone the above-mentioned match to the next Fifa international window scheduled for June 2021. We thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding,” a post from Benin Football Federation Facebook page read.

In their reaction, the Sierra Leonean football governing body questioned the Afcon organising committee's considerations which led them to arrive at the approved conclusion.

“The Sierra Leone Football Association would like to inform the public that Caf has notified SLFA that the organizing committee of the African Cup of Nations has decided to postpone the match #151 between Sierra Leone and Benin in the 2021 Afcon qualifiers until the next Fifa international window scheduled for June 2021,” a statement published by SLFA website on Wednesday read.

“Caf did not state the yardstick used by the committee to arrive at the said decision.

“Consequently, and in accordance with art. 83, 84 and 85 of the Afcon regulations which adequately address issues around failure to report for a match and/or refusal to play, of which there have been several precedents the Sierra Leone Football Association has resolved to appeal the decision of the Afcon organizing committee.

“SLFA is therefore calling on every Sierra Leonean especially football loving fans to stay calm as the matter is currently being pursued in line with the appropriate statutory provisions.”

As it stands, the Leone Stars occupy the third position in Group L having garnered three points. Victory over Benin will send them through to Cameroon 2022.

LIVE: England vs Poland

15' Although the initial line-ups suggested Foden in midfield and Mount on the right, Southgate has, in fact, gone for the opposite. Mount is operating a little deeper in midfield, often cropping up inside the left-hand channel, while Foden is drifting in from the right to support Kane and Sterling up top.

14' Rice goes on a rare foray forward, evading two or three tackles before moving a pass out to the left-hand side. Sterling attempts to cut in and cross towards the far post but Bednarek gets in front of Foden to head away.

12' Chilwell clips a pass over the top of the Poland defence for the run of Sterling into the area but Glik leaps powerfully to head clear. Possession then falls back to the hosts as they continue to dictate the early proceedings of this game.

11' This is the seventh World Cup group stage qualification campaign to see England face Poland, the most of two nations in the history of European World Cup qualifying. England have faced Poland in two of the three campaigns they’ve failed to qualify from, for the 1974 and 1994 World Cups.

10' Foden has the ball in the right-hand channel, ghosting inside and going down inside the area under the pressure of Krychowiak. Referee Kuipers isn't interested as he waves play on but replays show Krychowiak did have a handful of Foden's shirt there.

9' Pope comes a long way out of his area to race in front of Piatek and slam a clearance into the stands. Maguire and Stones looked a little concerned there but their goalkeeper was quick off his line to avert the danger.

8' CHANCE! Mount and Chilwell exchange passes on the left flank, with the latter reaching the byline and standing up a cross towards the penalty spot. Kane manages to get underneath the ball but Foden meets it, heading well over Szczesny's goal despite being under fairly little pressure.

6' Zielinski rolls through Piatek in the middle of the park but Stones is quick and alert to the danger, diving in with a standing tackle before the forward gets the chance to trouble Pope. Bednarek then smashes into Kane and blocks the England captain from taking a quick free-kick in the right-hand channel.

4' Mount and Chilwell work space for Sterling, however, the Manchester City's man wastes the opportunity by taking a heavy first touch and Moder intervenes outside the visitors' area.

3' Walker beats Rybus with ease, racing inside but there are no options to pass to further ahead of him. Maguire and Stones keep possession at their feet as the home side look to carve an opening through the Poland defence, who have started off sitting deep.

2' Chilwell nearly gets caught out by Bereszynski early doors but the right wing-back fails to keep the ball in play and the hosts get away with it. Stones is then required to tidy up and England work possession from one side of the pitch to the other.

1' Referee Bjorn Kuipers gets this game underway!

The players are wandering out on to the Wembley Stadium pitch and shortly it will be time for kick-off.

England have won their last seven home matches against Poland, a run stretching back to 1989. The Three Lions last failed to win at home against the Poles back in 1973, drawing 1-1 in a World Cup qualifier, a result that saw England fail to reach the 1974 World Cup.

Crucially for Paulo Sousa’s men, Robert Lewandowski misses out with a knee injury and Swiderski replaces him. Alongside the enforced change, the visitors also make three other changes as they move to a three-man defence. Centre-backs Celik and Bednarek join Glik in defence, while Moder comes in for Milik, who drops to the bench. Positive Covid-19 tests for Lukasz Skorupski and Mateusz Klich mean they also miss out.

Gareth Southgate opts for just the one change from the Albania game. Chilwell is preferred to Shaw at left-back, as Southgate again opts for a back four instead of a back three. James Ward-Prowse misses out of the squad entirely, returning to Southampton early as a fitness precaution for the remainder of the Premier League campaign.

SUBS: Arkadiusz Milik, Rafal Augustyniak, Paweł Dawidowicz, Lukasz Fabianski, Kamil Grosicki, Sebastian Kowalczyk, Kamil Jozwiak, Przemyslaw Placheta, Karol Niemczycki, Sebastian Szymanski, Kacper Kozlowski, Arkadiusz Reca.

POLAND (3-4-2-1): Wojciech Szczesny; Michal Celik, Kamil Glik, Jan Bednarek; Bartosz Bereszynski, Maciej Rybus, Grzegorz Krychowiak, Jakub Moder; Piotr Zielinski, Karol Swiderski; Krzysztof Piatek.

SUBS: Eric Dier, Luke Shaw, Tyrone Mings, Conor Coady, Reece James, Jude Bellingham, Jesse Lingard, Sam Johnstone, Dean Henderson, Ollie Watkins, Kieran Tripper, Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

ENGLAND (4-3-3): Nick Pope; Ben Chilwell, John Stones, Harry Maguire, Kyle Walker; Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice, Phil Foden; Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane, Mason Mount.

After a 5-0 thrashing of San Marino and an efficient performance away at Albania to win 2-0, England face their largest challenge of the group yet. Poland, who disappointed in a 3-3 draw with Hungary, corrected their wrongdoings by cruising past Andorra 3-0 on the weekend, meaning they have four points from two matches.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the World Cup qualifying Group I fixture between England and Poland at Wembley Stadium.

Spain bag three in Kosovo cruise

That's all from us today folks, we hope you enjoyed the game!

That brings an end to the international break, with Spain picking up two wins and a draw in their World Cup qualifying games. Whilst Kosovo have lost both competitive games.

Spain survive a scare to beat Kosovo 3-1 and move top of Group B, after goals from Olmo, Torres and Moreno. They led 2-0 at the break and should have scored a few earlier in the second period, but Torres was denied on a few occasions by Ujkani, who was excellent in goal. Meanwhile at the other end of the pitch, Simon made a huge mistake, losing the ball well outside his area and Halimi capitalised and made it 2-1. However, the hosts quickly rallied and Moreno made sure of the win five minutes later as he headed home from a corner.

90' + 3' FULL-TIME: SPAIN 3-1 KOSOVO

90' + 2' The hosts are comfortably seeing the game out now, keeping the ball well in midfield, just running down the clock as they seem to have clinched the three points.

90' There will be a minimum of three minutes added time played at the end of the second half.

88' CHANCE! Kosovo break through the Spain defence and almost make it 3-2! Zeneli feeds the ball through to Kastrati and he just gets to it ahead of Alba and pokes a shot towards goal. However, he gets too much on it and it flies just over the crossbar.

84' As it stands Spain will top Group B, with seven points from a possible six, as Sweden didn't play today. However, their next World Cup qualifier is in September and it's against Sweden.

81' It looks like we are going to see a few more changes for both teams here, getting some fresh legs onto the pitch.

79' The other game being played in Group B today is between Greece and Georgia, with the scoreline level at 1-1 after two quick goals.

77' CHANCE! Another opportunity for Moreno! Alba whips a terrific low cross into the six-yard box, which Moreno throws himself at, but he can't quite reach it. The ball then falls to Torres at the far post, but he puts it wide from close range.

73' Another decent effort from Olmo, however, his strike from the edge of the box is well gathered by Ujkani down to his left.

72' There is still plenty of time left on the clock here, could Kosovo get something out of the game? Spain have had so many chances throughout, a few of those falling to Torres and they just haven't been able to convert.

67' There are quite a few tired players out there for Kosovo now, they've had to do so much defending. However, they have done well to make sure they've only conceded two goals.

65' Kosovo struggle away from home, with six defeats in their last eight away matches and if they lose today, then it would be three on the bounce.

63' CHANCE! It should be 3-0! The hosts catch Kosovo out at the back with a quick counter and Torres is played through on goal and he only had Ujkani to beat. However, he blasts it at him as hard as he can and the keeper makes another excellent stop.

61' ALMOST! Celina manages to find Kastrati, who skips past Garcia, after the defender slips on the edge of the box and it allows Kastrati to get into the penalty area. However, Spain get players back and Busquets just manages to clear the danger in time, although his clearance flies very close to the bottom corner and Simon dives across to make sure it goes wide.

59' Decent effort! Pedri tries to pick his spot from the edge of the penalty area, however, his strike is too close to Ujkani and the keeper makes a comfortable save.

53' Not too far away! Olmo finds time and space on the edge of the penalty area and he drills an effort towards goal, however, it flies just wide of the Kosovo goal.

52' CHANCE! The scoreline would be a lot higher if it wasn't for Ujkani, who has been excellent in goal for Kosovo today. The keeper has just denied Torres, after the winger seemed to have a clear sight at goal, following Morata's cut back into the six-yard box. However, the keeper made himself as big as possible and made a terrific stop.

51' Almost! Pedri tries to find Morata with a superb chipped ball over the top of the Kosovo defence. However, the pass just has slightly too much on it and the striker can't quite reach it.

48' The second half has started the same way the first period ended, with Spain on top and dominating possession. Will they push forward in search of a third goal?

46' The second half is under way!

Kosovo have been forced to sit deep and soak up the pressure in the first half, with Spain constantly pushing forward and they look very confident of seeing this game out and taking the three points, which would take them top of Group B.

Spain are on course for a comfortable victory over Kosovo as they lead 2-0 at the break, thanks to two goals in two minutes, from Olmo and Torres. The hosts have dominated the game, with Morata and Alba both being denied by Ujkani early on. However, they eventually took the lead on 34 minutes, after Olmo found the top corner with his curling strike and Torres then doubled their lead shortly after.

45' + 1' HALF-TIME: SPAIN 2-0 KOSOVO

45' There will be a minimum of one minute added time played at the end of the first half.

43' Almost! Pedri does well down the left wing and he drills a low cross into the box towards the near post for Morata to try and get on the end of. However, the striker seems to get his feet mixed up slightly and Kosovo manage to clear the danger.

41' There’s not long left to play before the end of the first half, can Spain extend their lead and get a third goal before the half-time whistle?

39' SAVE! Excellent stop by Ujkani to deny Morata, after the striker tried to pass the ball into the bottom right corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area. However, the keeper gets down quickly and pushes it out wide.

38' That could be the game wrapped up now, two goals in two minutes have put Spain in pole position and they look like they could score every time they push forward.

32' Kosovo have won just two of their last 12 matches in all competitions, however, their last win came against Lithuania last week in a friendly.

30' We’re at the half an hour mark now and it remains goalless between Spain and Kosovo. However, the hosts have had a few good chances in front of goal.

28' Stoppage in play here as Hadergjonaj is down after being caught in the face by the arm of Alba, as the left-back tried to hold off the wing back. However, he should be fine to continue.

26' Little bit of a coming together between Torres and Kololli near the touchline and the Spanish winger is unhappy with the challenge and the pair have words. However it comes to nothing and the referee gives them a quick warning.

24' Kosovo are frustrating the hosts at times, they are defending well in numbers, with everyone back behind the ball trying to soak up the continuous Spanish pressure.

22' SAVE! Lovely spin round Dresevic by Morata in the Kosovo penalty area and he then drills a low effort towards goal. However, the shot from a tight angle is too close to Ujkani and the keeper makes an excellent stop to deny the striker.

20' Great ball into the box from the right wing by Torres! It is whipped towards the near post and Morata tries to get on the end of it, but he can't quite reach it and the visitors clear the danger.

18' It is one-way traffic at the moment, almost a matter of when rather than if Spain will score. It could be a very long game for Kosovo.

16' Blocked! Dresevic was in the right place at the right time to block a shot from Torres after Busquets played it through to him, as Kosovo fail to clear the initial danger. However, the resulting corner comes to nothing.

15' The hosts seem to be trying to walk the ball into the back of the net at the moment, they aren't getting it into the box for Morata or the other forwards to try and get on the end of.

13' Spain have been impressive at home as of late, with nine wins in their last 10 matches, which includes a 6-0 victory over Germany.

11' Another good move in the final third by Spain, this time it's Morata who feeds Pedri on the edge of the box and he perhaps could fire an effort towards goal. However, he opts to pass to Llorente and the Kosovo defence manage to see the ball out of play.

10' Perhaps a chance for Kosovo here, after Rashica is brought down by Garcia, after the Spanish defender missed his clearance and then dragged Rashica to the ground. However, the ball into the box isn't the best and Simon comes and punches clear.

8' CHANCE! Lovely build-up play between Alba and Koke, they play a quick one-two on the edge of the box and the left-back is then played through on goal, just getting to the ball ahead of Morata. However, the Kosovo keeper rushes off his line and smothers the shot from close range.

7' It is all Spain at the moment, they are dominating possession and Kosovo are having to sit deep inside their own half to soak up the pressure.

5' Wild effort! Olmo does well down the left wing, he cuts inside and then fires an effort towards goal from the edge of the penalty area. However, it flies high over the Kosovo goal.

3' Decent start here by Kosovo, they manage to work the ball into the Spain half of the pitch and Aliti then tries to whip a cross into the penalty area. However, it flies behind the Spain goal.

1' We're under way!

The teams are out on the pitch and kick off is just a few minutes away, stay tuned for all the match action!

Meanwhile Kosovo have made just one change to their starting line-up, with Zeneli missing out and he has been replaced by Dresevic.

Spain have made three changes to the side that beat Georgia, with Porro, Ruiz and Gil missing out and they have been replaced by Martinez, Koke and Olmo.

KOSOVO SUBS: Betim Fazliji, Lirim Kastrati, Eibasan Rashani, Idriz Voca, Edon Zhegrova, Leart Paqarada, Florent Hasani, Arber Zeneli, Betim Halimi, Visar Bekaj, Lirim Kastrati, Atdhe Nuhiu.

KOSOVO (3-4-1-2): Samir Ujkani; Mergim Vojvoda, Ibrahim Dresevic, Fidan Aliti; Florent Hadergjonaj, Besar Halimi, Hekuran Kryeziu, Benjamin Kololli; Bersant Celina; Milot Rashica, Vedat Muriqi.

SPAIN SUBS: Fabian Ruiz, Rodrigo, Pedro Porro, Jose Gaya, Diego Llorente, David De Gea, Sergio Canales, Robert Sanchez, Thiago, Gerard Moreno, Sergio Ramos, Mikel Oyarzabal.

SPAIN (4-3-3): Unai Simon; Marcos Llorente, Inigo Martinez, Eric Garcia, Jordi Alba; Pedri, Sergio Busquets, Koke; Ferran Torres, Alvaro Morata, Dani Olmo.

Meanwhile Kosovo have only played one match so far, however, they suffered a 3-0 defeat against Sweden, so they are currently bottom of the group.

Spain are unbeaten in their first two qualifying games, having drawn with Greece in the opening game, before beating Georgia 2-1 at the weekend, thanks to a stoppage time winner by Dani Olmo and they sit second in Group B, behind the leaders Sweden.

Hello and welcome to our LIVE match commentary of the Group B World Cup qualifying clash between Spain and Kosovo.

Griezmann goal sees France past Bosnia-Herzegovina

These two sides will meet in September again, in their first international game of the 2021-22 calendar of course, and that could suit Bosnia down to the ground, to get the biggest fish in Group D out of the way. But more silverware awaits France next - they have Euro 2020 to contend with. Until then however, thank you for joining us - and have a great week!

Ivaylo Petev's wait for a win in charge goes on, but he can still take plenty of positives from his side's performance here. They went up against the World Cup holders and, were it not for a neatly taken header, would have very likely held them to a draw. Now, they need to ensure they get the best of their other rivals to ensure a shot at qualifying for Qatar.

Occasion is everything, of course, but seven of Les Bleus' starting XI this evening also lined up from the off for the freewheeling victory over Croatia in that World Cup final in Russia in 2018. This, in comparison, was something of a slog - but a win is a win and there will be no complaints at the end of the day.

Antoine Greizmann's deft header on the hour hands France a second victory in Group D and condemns Bosnia and Herzegovina to a first defeat of the Qatar 2022 World Cup UEFA qualifiers. Didier Deschamps' side were far from inspiring on a cold European evening - but they remain unbeaten after their first clutch of games on the way to defending the title they won three years ago. Full-time in Sarajevo, it finishes Bosnia and Herzegovina 0-1 France.

90' + 3' FULL-TIME: BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA 0-1 FRANCE

90' + 1' No luck for Bosnia - and then France counter with Giroud, who sees an effort blocked from distance after Sissoko tees him up. That could be the last throw of the dice for the hosts.

88' France look to have crafted a one-on-one situation to get Sehic under pressure but the linesman's flag is up and they are caught offside.

84' Again, Bosnia defend their lines and ferry the ball back to halfway. It looks like Griezmann's header will be what separates these two at the end of play.

83' A last-gasp tackle from Ahmedhodzic is deemed to be a foul on France's left wing and Les Bleus have a free-kick chance in line with the Bosnia box. It will be Griezmann to take.

81' Pjanic is the man tasked with the set-piece - and he smashes it into the defensive wall, tightly formed inside the box, in the end. No luck for Bosnia in snatching a goal to tie things up here.

76' Pavard tries to crack a left-footed shot in from outside the box only to see it blocked. Bosnia tear back down the opposite end; suddenly, they have a second wind when it comes to the counter-attacks again.

74' There's been no further changes to speak of but both sides have got movements down in their dugouts. Are we about to see some further alterations?

72' That did not look comfortable for Krunic! The attacker slips at the back of a rare second-half counter, practically tripping over the ball inside France's penalty area. He stays down to get some treatment but is fine to ultimately continue.

70' Varane is not too far off the mark with a header from six yards out but it sails comfortably over the crossbar in the end. France still hunting a second effort.

68' France have notched an extra four shots since the break here, but there's been nothing from Bosnia. They don't look like they're going to find an equaliser any time soon.

64' Giroud! The Chelsea man isn't too far off the mark with a header now, latching onto a Kimpembe ball following a corner for the visitors. That could have doubled the lead for Les Bleus.

62' Now, can France make it two in quick order? One goal is only a slender lead, and the World Cup holders have possibly seen enough on the counter from their hosts today to know this isn't a done-and-dusted affair.

58' Mbappe is brought down in the France box and it'll be a free-kick to ease any immediate pressure for the visitors. On the sidelines, there's movement amid the substitutes.

56' Pavard with the intervention! Kolasinac is not too far away after a lovely ball is drifted out to the left edge for him and it is the defender who gets in between him and the goal to ensure it skews over for a corner instead.

54' Kimpembe meets a France corner now but his finish is poor, a spiraling touch that loops the delivery somewhere into the heavens and back down well out of play behind goal.

49' Todorovic - who wasn't too far away with that effort for the hosts in the first half - has to help shepherd the ball back to his goalkeeper Sehic now after some intense French pressure.

47' Coman lashes an immediate cross in from the off and Lemar just sees it drift beyond his reach. A sign of immediate determination from the visitors, who may well have been read the riot act at the interval.

46' We're back underway in Sarajevo. Will Les Bleus have the breakthrough they want or can their hosts continue to frustrate them?

There's plenty for Didier Deschamps to chew on. His side have objectively been better on a statistical level. But might they have been expected to be further ahead in this one, as opposed to finding themselves locked in a goalless stalemate? Food for thought.

It's all square at the break in Sarajevo and there's not too much to report beyond the very credible potential that World Cup holders France could find themselves held to a second draw in three games in their first batch of Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers. At half-time in Group D, it is Bosnia and Herzegovina 0-0 France.

45' HALF-TIME: BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA 0-0 FRANCE

44' It's Varane who gets on the eventual end of a looping delivery - and his effort is comfortably wide of the mark, drifting away to the right of the far post.

43' Krunic clips Rabiot now with what looks to just be a glancing blow - but it is enough for the latter to go down and win his side another 30-yard free-kick on the left edge.

41' Hadziahmetovic just has a nibble at Pogba now and France will have a 30-yard free-kick way out on the left wing as this game creeps towards a goalless half-time.

39' There's just been the two official shots for the hosts so far, and five for the visitors. Not too much to write home about.

37' This has been a fairly quiet few minutes though, it's fair to say. Bosnia break on a scrappy counter, France pull them back and work their way back again. Rinse and repeat, to a certain extent.

35' There's a little bit of restlessness around the French midfield as they continue to carve out half-chances without quite threading it all together. Bosnia are doing a good job at keeping their threats at bay so far.

33' The last time Bosnia were here - they play other home matches in Zenica too - they were downed by Italy in the Nations League. The time before that, they drew with Northern Ireland - and then lost a penalty shootout that cost them a Euro 2020 place. This hasn't been a happy hunting ground recently.

31' France earn back-to-back corners and Bosnia frustrate them again. That front line of Griezmann and Mbappe are yet to quite get their sights fixed in this match, but of course, one touch of class may be all it takes.

29' Rabiot tucks a shot around the right after the post after Griezmann tees him up and the former is disgusted with himself. Moments later, Lemar is flagged for an offside run. France are making great strides back into deep Bosnian territory here.

27' Bosnia have won only 30 per cent of duels for the ball against France so far, but they're not looking too overwhelmed. That spell deep in opposition territory seems to have done wonders for their confidence.

25' What a stop from Lloris! Suddenly France are under the cosh and the keeper is forced into a pair of brilliant close-range saves as Bosnia make the most of a set-piece opportunity out wide on the left. Top-drawer stuff from the World Cup winner.

23' Todorovic! Bosnia strike with their most dangerous move of the game yet and it is a cracker of a shot from the midfielder, who lashes it in off the right wing, curling it from distance towards the near post. Lloris is taken aback; the Tottenham goalkeeper has to make a quick dive to divert it from his top corner.

21' A moment later, there's almost a carbon copy play; a French corner is defused and Bosnia break. This time, Griezmann is the man who doubles back to cut down Dzeko and the latter can't believe that he isn't handed a free-kick for the industrious challenge.

19' Hadzikadunic concedes a corner shortly after the fact, but again, nothing comes of it for France and a breakaway Bosnia counter requires some freewheeling defensive acrobatics in retreat to cut off the danger.

17' After plenty of preamble, the ultimate attempt - with Griezmann and Lemar both nestling efforts - simply smashes into the defensive wall and then wide of the mark respectively. Still, an early test repelled for the hosts.

14' Sehic with the save! Coman makes it easy for the keeper in the end, as a tight cross tipped off the left edge is nudged with a deft header straight into the keeper's path, allowing him to palm it away before making an easy collection.

13' Now Bosnia are caught by the linesman's flag, as Cimirot attempts to thread a delivery to Dzeko only for his captain to have drifted offside. It's not a bad move from the hosts, who may be the underdogs here but still boast a host of fine big-name clutch players.

11' Coman! The midfielder cuts in off the right flank, following a promising spell of both possession and field position, before twisting to rifle a low effort past the wrong side of the near post.

9' Now it is Kimpembe's turn to draw an innocuous foul, with Dzeko the guilty party. The Bosnia skipper is not happy with that decision but France push their subsequent delivery deep for an attacking throw-in.

7' Krunic again is caught by Kimpembe with a glancing challenge, this one in the centre-circle. This is already turning into a tasty tussle between the pair. Griezmann subsequently catches a blow from a low sliding tackle, but seems to shrug off the initial burst of pain.

5' Kimpembe - whose own goal just before the hour mark against Ukraine cost France two points in the eyes of some - catches Krunic to concede an early free-kick, one that the hosts can't maximise to its full potential.

3' The early pressure isn't exclusively just from Les Bleus but they craft the first half-chance of the game now. Pogba wings a booming delivery downfield, over the Bosnian defence - and Mbappe drifts offside as he tries to bring it down.

1' We are underway in this Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifier between Bosnia and Herzegovina and France!

The teams have emerged for the national anthems in Sarajevo and we're moments away from kick-off.

This is the pair's fifth meeting in international football and France are unbeaten in all four previous encounters. They claimed victory in a 2006 friendly and in a Euro 2012 qualifier - but needed a late Samir Nasri penalty to claim a draw on their last clash in 2011.

Subs: Ferland Mendy, Mike Maignan, Clement Lenglet, Moussa Sissoko, Olivier Giroud, Wissam Ben Yedder, Lucas Digne, Ousmane Dembele, Kurt Zouma, Steve Mandanda, Leo Dubois, Tanguy Ndombele.

FRANCE (4-4-2): Hugo Lloris; Lucas Hernandez, Presnel Kimpembe, Raphael Varane, Benjamin Pavard; Kingsley Coman, Adrien Rabiot, Paul Pogba, Thomas Lemar; Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappe.

Subs: Marko Mihojevic, Amar Rahmanovic, Branimir Cipetic, Eldar Civic, Kenan Piric, Stjepan Loncar, Miroslav Stevanovic, Amer Gojak, Smail Prevljak, Nikola Vasilj, Haris Duljevic, Luka Menalo.

BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA (3-5-2): Ibrahim Sehic; Anel Ahmedhodzic, Dennis Hadzikadunic, Sinisa Sanicanin; Darko Todorovic, Amir Hadziahmetovic, Miralem Pjanic, Gojko Cimirot, Sead Kolasinac; Edin Dzeko, Rade Krunic.

Bosnia too make some changes, with the more experienced Ibrahim Sehic coming in to replace Nikola Vasilj in goal. But it is the return of Edin Dzeko up front that is likely to put fear into the French defence, with the hosts' skipper out to further enshrine his local legacy.

Having fielded the relative equivalent of a second-string back four against Kazakhstan - the sort of second-string back four any other nation would love to have - France are back to near full-strength. Anthony Martial's injury means Kylian Mbappe slots straight back in up front.

Ivaylo Petev though will be determined to see his likewise undefeated start to life with the hosts continue today. A pair of draws with Finland - and in a friendly against Costa Rica - means that Dusan Bajevic's successor is yet to taste loss, though he too is seeking a maiden win.

Les Bleus have made an unbeaten start to life on the road to defending their crown, but Didier Deschamps' men haven't quite been at their best so far. A routine win over Kazakhstan handed them victory only after they were held to a draw against Ukraine - meaning today's game is a must-win for morale.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup UEFA qualifiers, as defending champions France look to finish their international break on a high note against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Group D at Stadium Grbavica in Sarajevo.

Germany lose to North Macedonia on home soil

That's all for today, goodbye!

That win takes North Macedonia above Germany in Group J on goal difference into second place behind Armenia. Their attention now turns towards the Euros in June. Germany drop to third and Low will be hoping they can quickly put this result behind them when they start their preparations for the Euros.

North Macedonia shock Germany with a 2-1 win. Goretzka rattled the crossbar with an early shot, but it was the visitors that took the lead just before half-time when Pandev tapped in Bardhi's cross. Germany pulled one back after Sane was brought down in the box by Alioski and Gundogan converted the spot-kick. Elmas then scored in the 85th minute, with the help of a deflection which took it past Ter Stegen, to seal the points for North Macedonia.

90' + 9' FULL-TIME: GERMANY 1-2 NORTH MACEDONIA.

90' + 7' There's been a clash of heads between Can and Ristovski as they tried to get on the end of Ter Stegen's clearance and they've stayed down. The medical teams are on now to give them some treatment and they're both able to walk off the field.

90' + 5' North Macedonia have a lot of players forward as they look to try and add a third goal here and Spirovski drills a shot on goal from the edge of the box. It hits Ademi on the way through which takes it looping onto the crossbar, but the flag goes up against the midfielder.

90' + 2' Sane has space to run into down the right but he chooses to cut inside and have a go from just outside the box instead. It's a wild effort from him though which curls high and wide of the far post.

87' Germany are trying to get back on level terms and are straight on the attack after the restart. Gundogan plays an early throughball into the box, but none of his team-mates make a run to get on the end of it and Dimitrievski comes to collect it.

83' It's a great run by Elmas through the middle as he weaves past three Germany defenders to get to the edge of the box before he's crowded out. He pulls it back for Spirovski who hits a low shot on goal, but it's a comfortable one for Ter Stegen.

80' WHAT A MISS! It's a brilliant throughball from Kimmich to pick out Gundogan and he's one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He unselfishly chooses to square it to Werner who is left with a simple tap-in, but he gets it all wrong and drags it well wide of the near post.

79' Alioski tries to pick out Pandev's run into the box with a throughball, but it's cut out by Can which sets Germany on the counter-attack. It's well-worked down the right for the hosts, but Sane can't pick out Werner at the near post.

76' There are big shouts for a penalty from the North Macedonia players for a handball against Can. Alioski curled his cross into the box which was missed by Ademi and although his arm is down, it does look like Can blocked the header with it but nothing is given.

75' North Macedonia patiently work their way upfield and nobody picks up Alioski on the left. He whips another good cross into the box, but Ginter just gets enough on it to send it out for a corner.

73' CHANCE! Ginter finds himself high upfield on the right and he drills a low cross into Kimmich. His first touch gets him in on goal but his low shot is blocked by Ristovski and it loops up kindly for Dimitrievski.

71' It's still all Germany at the moment as they continue to patiently play out from the back, but they're still struggling to find a way in behind the visitors. Sane tries to pick out Gnabry's run into the far post but sees his cross cut out by Ristovski.

69' North Macedonia just can't get out of their own half at the moment as Younes wins the ball off Elmas and touches it onto Werner. He turns and tries to pick out Gundogan's run through the middle, but there's too much on it and Dimitrievski collects it.

66' Trajkovski breaks quickly on the counter through the middle and he does well to pick out Bardhi's run to his right. His first touch is heavy and takes it away from him but he still manages to get a shot away from the edge of the box which is blocked by Gundogan.

65' North Macedonia win a free-kick through the middle and Alioski floats a great cross into the box. Ademi is chasing it down at the far post, but he can't get his head on it and Ter Stegen is able to collect it for Germany.

62' PENALTY TO GERMANY! Sane cuts inside from the right and he's holding the ball up well while he tries to pick out a pass. He cuts back as Alioski slides in and the defender takes out Sane's standing leg and the referee points straight to the spot.

61' North Macedonia can't make anything of the corner, but they keep hold of the ball high up the field. Bardhi has Pandev making a late run into the box but it's a wild cross from him that flies straight out of play.

58' Younes can't find a way past Ristovski down the left so he pulls the ball back for Kimmich just outside the box. He plays a throughball into Gnabry first time but it's behind him and Dimitrievski comes off his line to collect it.

54' Sane is given a lot of space down the right again and he squares it to Havertz just inside the box. Alioski is quick to close him down though and the forward can't knock it past him to get in on goal.

52' Rudiger almost plays himself into trouble after intercepting Dimitrievski's goal-kick, but he wants too long on the ball. He lets it bounce in front of him as Pandev closes him down, but he manages to hook it clear just in time.

50' It's a great cross into the box from Sane and he has a lot of people to aim for. It's Goretzka who rises highest to get on the end of it, but again, Germany overwork it by passing it around instead of having a shot and Velkoski breaks up the attack.

48' Can drives to the edge of the box from centre-back and touches it out to Gundogan on the left. He tries to pick out the defender again, but Musliu steps back across for North Macedonia to intercept it.

46' Germany get us back underway for the second half!

Angelovski will be very pleased so far as his side have frustrated Germany at the back while looking dangerous on the counter. They took the chance when it presented itself and he'll be hoping for more of the same after the break. As for Germany, they've looked out of ideas at times and Low will want to see a huge improvement in the second half if they want to get back into the game.

North Macedonia score late in the first half to lead Germany 1-0 at the break. The hosts have dominated the game for large periods, coming closest when Goretzka rattled the crossbar with an early shot. Gnabry also fired over from close range and saw an effort well-saved by Dimitrievski. At the other end, Ademi saw a header pushed away by Ter Stegen before Pandev scored a tap-in after Germany failed to clear their lines.

45' + 3' HALF-TIME: GERMANY 0-1 NORTH MACEDONIA.

45' + 1' Sane is still trying to make something happen for Germany down the right, but he's having to hold the ball up while he waits for support to join him. He swings a cross into the box, but it's played straight to Musliu who clears his lines.

44' Alioski switches play out to Nikolov on the right and he tries to catch out Germany by swinging an early cross into the box. He has Pandev to aim for in the middle, but Rudiger gets ahead of him to clear his lines.

42' Germany are dominating in possession again now, but they're still struggling to find a way in behind North Macedonia. Kimmich tries a throughball into Gnabry, but there's too much on it and Dimitrievski comes off his line to collect it.

40' GREAT SAVE! North Macedonia win a free-kick on the right wing and Alioski whips a dangerous cross into the near post. Ademi gets a glancing header on it and Ter Stegen makes a brilliant reflex save to push it away and out for a corner.

39' Ademi stayed down after being caught by Rudiger and he's holding his ankle. He's back on his feet after receiving treatment and is moving gingerly, but it looks like he wants to carry on.

35' Again, Germany get into a great position as Gnabry squeezes the ball into the box to Goretzka, but they overwork it. Instead of going for goal himself, he tries to pick out Sane and North Macedonia pile back to crowd them out.

33' It's a brilliant switch of play from Ginter to pick out Gosens' run down the left and he volleys a cross into the box first time. It's ahead of Gnabry, but Havertz latches onto it at the far post. He should go for goal but tries to set up Goretzka instead and gifts the ball to Velkoski.

31' MISS! Gosens whips a great cross into Goretzka in the middle and he does well to touch the ball onto Gnabry on the right of the box under pressure. He takes a touch before firing his shot over Dimitrievski and over the top of the bar from close range.

30' North Macedonia are trying to break quickly every time they do win the ball back and Pandev does really well to turn away from Goretzka on the left. He curls a cross towards Trajevski, but can only find Rudiger.

27' GOOD SAVE! Havertz takes a quick free-kick to Sane in midfield and he picks out Gnabry on the left with an early throughball. He cuts into the box and goes for goal from a tight angle, but Dimitrievski gets down to make the save with his foot.

25' Alioski touches the ball into Ademi on the left of the area, but Germany are quick to crowd around him so he plays it back to Alioski. He fizzes a low cross into the six-yard box, but Trajkovski can't reach it at the near post.

23' North Macedonia win a free-kick and Bardhi goes short to Alioski, who swings a great, deep cross into the far post from the left. He picks out Ristovski but he can't send his header towards goal under pressure from Rudiger.

21' Germany are struggling to break North Macedonia down at the moment. They're dominating possession, but it's all in front of the visitors, who are happy to just sit back without the ball.

19' Ginter is holding the ball up well as he pushes forward down the right, but none of his team-mates are making a run into the box. He ends up trying to swing a cross into the middle anyway but a big deflection off Musliu takes it straight to Dimitrievski.

17' North Macedonia win a free-kick in their own half on the right and they try to go long to Pandev, who is in a lot of space on the opposite flank. It's a good idea from Bardhi, but there's not enough on it and Ginter cuts it out.

15' Germany are still dominating in possession and are keeping North Macedonia penned back deep in their own half. Sane squares it to Gundogan just outside the box and he decides to have a go from distance, but his effort is blocked Velkoski.

13' Sane is trying to find some space to run into down the right but just can't get past Alioski so he turns and switches play out to the left. Can pushes forward from centre-back to try and help out, but his throughball into Gosens is cut out by Nikolov.

11' Bardhi has pulled up and it looks like he has a problem with his hip. He's walking gingerly to the sideline, but after receiving some treatment, it looks like he's going to be able to carry on.

9' OFF THE BAR! Havertz is allowed a lot of space as he drives forward down the right and he squares it to Goretzka on the edge of the box. He takes a touch before firing his shot on goal. Dimitrievski is beaten, but it bounces back off the crossbar.

7' Trajkovski nicks the ball off Kimmich in midfield and his first thought is to get his side forward. He plays it out to Nikolov on the right and he drills a low cross into the box towards Pandev but Can steps across to intercept it.

4' Ginter is given a lot of space on the halfway line and he has time to pick out a long ball over the top to Gnabry. He times his run perfectly to stay onside but can't quite reach it on the stretch and it bounces out for a goal-kick.

2' Germany are dominating possession early in the game and North Macedonia haven't been able to get out of their own half. Gosens plays a throughball into Sane down the left, but his first touch lets him down and it bounces out of play.

1' Pandev gets the game underway for North Macedonia!

The teams are out on the pitch now, with kick-off just moments away.

Germany have lost just one of their last 15 games in all competitions (W9 D5), though that was a 6-0 defeat to Spain at the end of last year, while North Macedonia come into this game having lost just two of their last 11 outings (W6 D3).

Igor Angelovski makes three changes to the team that beat Liechtenstein on Sunday, with Nikolov, Darko Velkoski and Ademi all coming into the starting line-up. Ristevski, Radeski and Spirovski drop to the bench.

Oshoala scores as Barcelona beat Manchester City to reach Champions League semi-final

The Nigeria international played a vital role as the Catalans progressed in the European competition

Asisat Oshoala scored the only goal for Barcelona as they bowed 2-1 to Manchester City in the second leg of the Women's Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday.

The pacy forward was handed her seventh appearance in the European competition and delivered a fine display to help her side advance into the last four of the tournament 4-2 on aggregate.

Oshoala started the encounter along with Caroline Graham Hansen and Mariona Caldentey in the attack for Lluis Cortes' team.

With a 3-0 first-leg advantage, Barcelona were looking to cement their passage into the next round but Abigail Dahlkemper assisted Janine Beckie to open the scoring for City in the 20th minute.

Oshoala came close to securing the equaliser in the 22nd and 29th minute, but she was flagged for offside on both occasions.

The Nigeria international almost found another golden opportunity to level matters but she was denied by goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck inside the six-yard box three minutes from half-time.

After the restart, Caldentey brilliantly set up Oshoala, who made no mistake to fire past Lucy Bronze and Robuck in the 59th minute.

However, City pushed to regain their lead on the night and they were gifted the chance when Ellen White was brought down in the box and Samantha Mewis converted from the penalty spot nine minutes later.

Before being taken off in the 79th minute, the Super Falcons captain had the City goalkeeper beat but she was denied inside the area.

Despite several late attempts by City, the Catalans held onto their nerve to preserve their two-goal advantage to guarantee their progression.

Oshoala has now scored four goals in the Champions League this season after Wednesday's effort.

Oshoala will hope to continue her fine performances when Barcelona take on holders Lyon or Paris Saint Germain in the semi-final.

Before then, they will be expected to extend their winning run in the Spanish top flight to two when they take on second-placed Levante in their next fixture on Sunday.

Charles Bulu: FIFA referee in stable condition after collapsing during Cote d’Ivoire versus Ethiopia

The Ghanaian arbiter who passed out during the Elephants’ encounter versus the Walia ibex is now feeling better

Fifa referee Charles Bulu is now in a stable condition after collapsing on Tuesday evening.

The Ghanaian arbiter took charge of the Africa Cup of Nations Group K qualifying encounter between Cote d’Ivoire and Ethiopia at the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara.

Bulu, 34 – who has been an international referee since 2019 – fell to the playing turf after showing signs of unease.

He was subsequently stretchered off and was taken to a local hospital in Abidjan.

Appreciatively, he is back on his feet as confirmed by Saedeciv – a Twitter handle that monitors the latest news on the Ivorian national football team.

“Hello from the Ghanaian referee! He is fine,” a tweet from them read.

Initially appointed as fourth official, Bulu ended up overseeing the qualifier after his compatriot who had been scheduled to officiate the match reportedly tested positive for Covid-19.

Even with Patrice Beaumelle’s men leading the Walia ibex 3-1, fourth official Koussi Biro was not eligible to conclude the game as he is Ivorian.

After extensive discussions, Kenya’s Gilbert Cheruiyot (assistant referee) sounded the final whistle in the 90th minute.

The Ethiopian Football Federation stated that there will be a decision on the outcome of the match.

"The game has been cancelled. The referee has been taken to hospital because he fell sick and fell on the field. Caf decision is expected,” they wrote in a statement.

Should the Confederation of African Football decide to cancel the result – it would be of no significance as both countries are already through to Cameroon 2022 following Madagascar's inability to defeat Niger Republic.

The result at the Barikadimy Stadium, Toamasina ended 0-0 after full time.

Cote d’Ivoire will be making their 24th appearance at next year’s African football showpiece. There, they would be hoping to win the diadem for the third time after previous successes at Senegal 1992 and Equatorial Guinea 2015.

For 1962 champions Ethiopia, they are making a return to the competition since their last appearance in 2013. In South Africa, they crashed out of the preliminary round after failing to negotiate their way past the Super Eagles, Burkina Faso and Zambia in Group C.

'I think that's wrong' - Real Madrid and Germany star Kroos criticises awarding of 2022 World Cup to Qatar

The midfielder, a world champion in 2014, doesn't think the country should be staging the tournament, although he stopped short of backing a boycott

Toni Kroos says "it's wrong" that Qatar were given 2022 World Cup hosting rights after seeing the dangerous conditions workers have had to endure in preparation for next year's competition.

Germany have been among several countries to stage protests against alleged human rights violations in Qatar before their World Cup qualifying matches this month.

A report from The Guardian in February painted a damning picture of working conditions and stated that more than 6,500 migrant workers have died in the Gulf State since they were named as tournament hosts 11 years ago, with Kroos insisting the situation is "absolutely unacceptable".

What has been said?

The Real Madrid midfielder was particularly unhappy over reports that workers are subjected to very long hours in hot conditions without enough food and water.

"I think it's wrong that this tournament was given [to Qatar]," Kroos, who was unable to link up with Germany during the current international break because of injury, said on his brother Felix's podcast Einfach mal Luppen.

“Immigrant workers are subjected to days without rest with the temperature under a torrid 50 degrees, they suffer from insufficient nutrition, without drinking water and at crazy temperatures. All of these points are absolutely unacceptable."

However, Kroos does not think the problem will be solved by a proposed boycott of Qatar 2022, adding: "Would a boycott serve to improve working conditions? I think not. Football always arouses extreme attention. Be it before the tournament or during it.”

What have FIFA and Qatar said?

Football's main governing body have given no indication that the tournament could be moved to another country, while insisting that proper safety procedures are being followed on site.

"With the very stringent health and safety measures on site, the frequency of accidents on FIFA World Cup construction sites has been low when compared to other major construction projects around the world," the world governing body's statement reads.

Meanwhile, Qatar's Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) - the organisation responsible for providing the infrastructure for the World Cup - have stated: "We have always been transparent about the health and safety of workers on projects directly related to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

"Since construction began in 2014, there have been three work-related fatalities and 35 non-work-related deaths. The SC has investigated each case, learning lessons to avoid any repeat in the future. The SC has disclosed each incident through public statements and or Annual Workers’ Welfare Progress Reports.

"Preparations for the first FIFA World Cup to be held in the Middle East and Arab world have already brought significant benefits to workers on SC and non-SC projects in Qatar.

"These include significantly improved accommodation facilities, the provision of electronic medical records and comprehensive medical checks, innovative heat stress mitigation plans, extensive training and upskilling programmes and a guarantee from SC contractors to reimburse USD $30m+ in illegal recruitment fees to 48,883 SC and non-SC workers.

"With less than two years until the tournament begins, we will continue to use this opportunity to deliver sustainable change and leave a meaningful legacy beyond 2022."

ATK Mohun Bagan: Head coach Antonio Habas signs one-year contract extension

Mariners will have Antonio Habas as their boss for the 2021-22 ISL season...

Indian Super League (ISL) ATK Mohun Bagan have extended the contract of head coach Antonio Habas. The two-time ISL winner with ATK has signed a one-year extension, the club announced on Wednesday.

The Spaniard led the Mariners to the ISL final in their first-ever ISL campaign but lost the trophy to Mumbai City. Bagan also finished as the runners' up in the league standings which was also topped by the Islanders.

Habas managed to assemble a formidable squad and built a team that was both defensively strong and lethal in the final third. The defence, with the presence of Sandesh Jhingan, Tiri and Pritam Kotal, was the best in the league and had let in just 15 goals in 20 games during the league stage. Striker Roy Krishna recorded 14 goals and 8 assists to be crowned the league's Player of the Season.

Habas has previously lifted the ISL trophy with ATK in 2014 and the 2019-20 season. By finishing the season as runners up last season, he has led Bagan to the AFC Cup 2022 qualifiers as well.

The Spaniard's contract was coming to this year and by giving him a one-year extension, the club has ensured stability going into the next season.

Afcon Qualifier: Caf confirms new date for Sierra Leone vs Benin clash

The continent's football governing body has picked a new date for the postponed encounter between the Leone Stars and the Squirrels

The Confederation of African Football has announced the postponed Africa Cup of Nations qualification encounter between Sierra Leone and Benin Republic will now take place during the June international window.

The Group L fixture initially billed for Tuesday, March 30, at the National Stadium, Freetown did not take place owing to a Covid-19 controversy.

However, both teams will now square up against one another in three months’ time – a game that will determine the last team to secure a place for Cameroon 2022.

“The Africa Cup of Nations organizing committee has decided to postpone the above-mentioned match to the next Fifa international window scheduled for June 2021. We thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding,” a post from Benin Football Federation Facebook page read.

Although Michel Dussuyer’s men arrived at the match venue, they refused to leave their bus after being told within an hour to kick-off that star player Steve Mounie, alongside five others had tested positive for the virus.

The Squirrels did not accept the results produced by their hosts claiming the tests taken 72 hours earlier turned out negative.

“We arrived at the stadium in Sierra Leone to learn that—bizarrely—five starters have Covid. What a comedy sketch!” defender Emmanuel Imorou tweeted.

“We did our own tests 72 hours before the match as planned,” he added. “After the time of the trip, we were tested again in Sierra Leone, and five positive results…the captain, and players from Ligue 1 and Ligue 2.”

Benin Republic also echoed their dissatisfaction with how events turned out in Freetown.

“What is currently happening is a disgrace for African football,” they wrote on their official Twitter handle.

“We hope that the Confederation of African Football will take its responsibilities and—especially—take measures following these decisions.”

The Squirrels lost 1-0 the last time out to Gernot Rohr’s Nigeria, while the Leone Stars recorded a 0-0 draw in Maseru, Lesotho.

Dussuyer’s side needs a draw to guarantee their place in the biennial African football showpiece, while victory for John Keister’s team will send Sierra Leone through.

Makaay on drinking beer at Bayern Munich, his verdict on Haaland and 'p*ssing off' Roberto Carlos

The former Netherlands international striker has shared stories from his playing days while praising a current and future star at Borussia Dortmund

Ex-Bayern Munich frontman Roy Makaay has opened up on his career, including drinking beer on the team bus and how he "pissed off" Roberto Carlos when playing against Real Madrid, while also giving his verdict on Erling Haaland.

Makaay enjoyed an illustrious playing career spanning 17 years, which included successful spells at Deportivo La Coruna, Bayern and Feyenoord.

The Dutchman has plenty of fond memories from his time at Bayern, who he claims were happy to allow the players to indulge in post-match drinking sessions on the team bus.

What's been said?

"At FC Bayern, we often drank a wheat beer or two on the bus after the games," Makaay told Goal and SPOX.

"I know, today that's not necessarily in keeping with the times for a professional footballer, but back then it was simply part of the game."

Makaay's famous goal against Madrid

One of the most famous strikes of Makaay's career came in a round of 16 Champions League clash with Madrid in the 2006-07 season.

The former Netherlands international scored the quickest goal in the competition's history when he found the net after just 10.12 seconds, with Roberto Carlos guilty of gifting the ball to Hasan Salihamidzic in the buildup to the goal.

Asked how Carlos reacted to making such a huge mistake on the biggest stage, Makaay responded: "Of course he was pissed off. I remember him saying afterwards that it was because of the pitch."

Makaay on Haaland

Makaay went on to offer his assessment of Borussia Dortmund frontman Haaland, who has established himself as one of the most deadly attackers in Europe since moving to Westfalenstadion from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020.

The Norwegian has hit 33 goals in 31 games across all competitions this season, attracting attention from Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City and Manchester United.

"In my opinion, he is the best young centre-forward," Makaay said of Haaland. "Anyone who scores so consistently at this age can only have a great future ahead of him."

Makaay's overall career record

Makaay scored 310 goals in 642 appearances in total between 1993 and 2010, having also played for Vitesse and Tenerife before stepping up to a higher level at Deportivo.

The one-time Bayern talisman won nine major trophies in total, including one Liga title and two Bundesliga crowns, while also picking up the European Golden Shoe in 2002-03.

Makaay also won 43 caps for the Netherlands, scoring six goals for his country.

Kaizer Chiefs star Ngcobo 'high in spirit' after Orlando Pirates win and looking to beat Wydad Casablanca

Amakhosi resume continental business and host the Moroccans after an important win

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Nkosingiphile Ngcobo says they are spurred by their Soweto derby victory against Orlando Pirates in their last game as they welcome continental heavyweights Wydad Casablanca for Saturday’s Caf Champions League Group C clash.

Although their last Champions League outing was a 0-0 draw away at Petro Atletico de Luanda just over two weeks ago, Chiefs went on to beat Orlando Pirates 1-0 five days later to end a three-match run of failing to triumph over their Soweto rivals.

Ngcobo says the Pirates win boosted their mentality going into the Wydad match.

“That was not an easy game against Pirates but it was a nice game actually,” Ngcobo told Chiefs media.

“We are happy we managed to get the three points so I think that will boost our confidence and momentum going forward. We just have to keep up the spirit and keep going. Obviously, Wydad are a good team but we just have to make sure that we prepare very well and I am confident that we can beat them. We just have to be confident.”

Chiefs were thumped 4-0 in the reverse fixture by Wydad in neutral Ouagadougou which makes the Moroccans potentially difficult opponents on Saturday.

Amakhosi host Wydad looking to climb from third spot where they are currently placed with five points, the same as second-placed Horoya AC.

After hosting Wydad, Chiefs travel to Horoya for the final game of their group in what looks like a mammoth task but Ngcobo believes they can still advance to the quarter-finals.

“I think they [Wydad] just capitalised on the chances they got and the little mistakes that we committed [in the first leg] and they were able to get the ball in the back of the net,” said Ngcobo.

“We still have a big chance [to progress to the knockout phase], we just have to make sure that we win all the games that are left and then we will be fine. They [Wydad] won the first game against us so I think they will be more careful and we just have to go with them and make sure that we win.

“We are in high spirits as a team, we know that we can win the games we are left with. We just have to be confident and keep pushing and we will go through.”

Joe Montemurro to leave role as Arsenal Women head coach

The Aussie led the Gunners to their first Women's Super League title in seven years while also reaching four cup finals in his three-and-a-half years

Arsenal Women head coach Joe Montemurro will leave his role at the end of the current season.

Montemurro guided the Gunners to their first Women's Super League title in seven years back in 2019, having won the Continental Cup a year earlier. As a result, he was named the WSL's Manager of the Year.

The Australian coach is leaving "to take a professional break to recharge" and to spend more time with his family.

What has been said?

Speaking upon the announcement of the news on Wednesday, Montemurro said: "My three-and-a-half years at Arsenal have been a fantastic adventure, the highlight of my coaching career. I have had the opportunity to work with and learn from some of the best in the industry on and off the pitch.

"This has been the hardest professional decision of my life, as I absolutely love this job and this club, the club I have supported all my life. I’m hugely grateful to the club for their unrelenting support during my time here and in understanding and respecting my decision.

"I’ve had a fantastic time here at Arsenal and I am proud of what we have achieved. I must thank all the fans, players, staff and the club. This club has always been a leader in women’s football and I will be cheering us on to the next level as I watch as a passionate and enduring fan.

"My focus now is helping the team to complete the season strongly and finishing as high as possible in the WSL, leaving the club in good shape for the future."

What legacy will Montemurro leave?

Montemurro has brought an attractive and attacking style of play to Arsenal that not only resonates with the style the club is widely associated with, but one that has won many plaudits from the outside too. He achieved this by recruiting and putting his trust in exciting young players and aiding their development.

The Gunners are the most successful women's team in England, but were in a difficult period when he arrived from Melbourne City, where he won three trophies. After coming into the role midway through the 2017-18 season, Montemurro guided the club to two cup finals before the season ended - winning the Conti Cup and finishing as runners-up in the Women's FA Cup.

The following year, he delivered Arsenal's first league title since 2012 and returned them to the Women's Champions League, from which they had been absent for five years.

This season has been more difficult, however. After finishing outside of the European spots last year, Arsenal struggled in the first half of the season and looked like they could miss out again. That saw pressure piled on the Aussie as a result, particularly with key players, such as Vivianne Miedema and Leah Williamson, being linked with transfers away.

However, a win over Manchester United earlier this month means that the race for the Champions League is back in Arsenal's hands, despite a crippling amount of injuries suffered this season. Should Montemurro guide the team to a top-three finish, it would end his tenure on a high, given many thought the Gunners were out of the picture only a few months ago.

Why Yanga SC should not place Migne under pressure - Mogella

The Frenchman is understood to be in advanced talks to take over Timu ya Wananchi after Cedric Kaze's sacking

Former Simba SC and Yanga SC star Zamayoni Mogella has explained why Sebastien Migne should be given ample time when he arrives to take charge of the Tanzania Mainland Premier League record champions.

The former Harambee Stars head coach is expected to take charge of Yanga when the season will resume after a 21-day break. Yanga, before the season went into a break to honour former president, the late Pombe Magufuli, were leading with 50 points. However, Mogella stated that the Frenchman should not be put under intense pressure especially this season.

"He needs magic or a miracle in order to ensure he does a great job because the remaining time of the season is not enough for him to have a complete overhaul of the club," the retired star said as was quoted by Mwanaspoti.

"He would need time and so he should not be judged for what he will do within a short period and seen as one who cannot handle the club.

"Migne is the right coach but Yanga fans should not put him under so much pressure to deliver so much this season."

According to the publication, Migne has been busy analysing the players through Premier League videos provided as well as those on the club's youtube channel.

The new coach is expected to land this week and will be assisted by coaches from five different countries. Initially, Migne reportedly wanted to influence a choice for the assistant coach position but the club insisted Juma Mwambusi will be maintained.

The new goalkeepers' coach is Razak Siwa who has been working with the club for the last two days. The former Bandari keeper's tactician has been asked to ensure the keepers will be different and very fit in the next three months.

Physiotherapist Edem Mortotsi will be working under Siwa after he was retained when the club made technical changes that saw Kaze leave the Jangwani giants.

The Ghanaian expert was brought to the club by Kaze but Yanga were satisfied he was not to blame for the poor results, which is why he was not shown the door when the reshuffle was done.

Nahumu Muganda has been appointed from Ihefu FC as another doctor and is coming to replace Sheky Mngazija who asked to leave his post. Hafidh Saleh will remain as the team manager while Mohamed Omar will work as the kit manager.

Should Migne arrive to take charge of the Dar es Salaam club, he would be the third coach to oversee them this season. In the beginning, Zlatko Krmpotic was appointed but the former Zesco United tactician lasted for only 37 days.

Kaze was later appointed but a string of draws and a 2-1 loss to Coastal Union at the beginning of March sealed his fate as the head coach.

Afcon Qualifier: Olunga reveals how Mulee's advice for Harambee Stars worked against Togo

The striker stated the coach wanted the players to avoid conceding early in the game as they had done against the Pharaohs

Kenya striker Michael Olunga has revealed Jacob 'Ghost' Mulee's advice that helped Harambee Stars defeat Togo in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Monday.

Harambee Stars picked a 2-1 win in Lome to end the qualifiers on a high note and the Al Duhail centre-forward has stated Mulee insisted on the need to avoid conceding early.

When Kenya hosted and drew against Egypt 1-1, the East African side had conceded in the second minute.

"The coach was clear that we must make sure we do not concede early as we did against Egypt. We ended up scoring first and that ensured we won the match in the end," Olunga told Goal.

"Any time one goes for an away game, it requires high-level tactics especially given that the opponent will enjoy the home advantage. That partly explains why we played better against Egypt.

"Playing away from home demands that you respect the opponent because he is playing at his own turf. The best way to face an opponent away is to make sure you do not concede first."

The former Gor Mahia striker was not part of the team that faced Togo but he was impressed by how his teammates did the job.

"Of course, I am gutted because I could not represent my country but the most important thing is that the team collected the three points and we won a game away from home," he added.

"The result showed the quality of the team, a team that is composed majorly of local players and I believe everyone gave a good account of themselves. That was the best way to finish our group and I hope most of them will be considered in the future assignments."

To the former Thika United and Tusker star, the win against Togo will act as a boost for their confidence ahead of the World Cup qualifiers that will begin mid-2021.

"Finishing with a win against Togo makes me believe that it gave everyone confidence before the next [World Cup qualifiers] games. We also displayed a good game against Egypt but we were unlucky not to win.

"I also believe the competition in the team is very stiff and that everyone is up to the task."

Kenya are in a World Cup qualifier group that has Mali, Rwanda and Uganda. Before facing Togo, Harambee Stars had already failed to book a ticket for the Cameroon finals after the draw against the Pharaohs in Nairobi.

Egypt and Comoros qualified from Group G while Kenya finished third and Togo remained rock bottom.

Da Rosa: Lokosa has left Simba SC and the matter is finished

The French tactician gives an updates on the Nigerian striker who signed for the Msimbazi giants but never kicked a ball for them

Simba SC coach Didier Gomes Da Rosa has confirmed striker Junior Lokosa is no longer a player for the club.

The Nigerian forward arrived at the Msimbazi giants during the mini-transfer window on February 8, 2021, from Esperance of Tunisia and was signed to boost the team as they had qualified for the group stage of the Caf Champions League.

However, since his unveiling, Lokosa never featured in either Mainland Premier League or Champions League matches, a move which forced club fans to ask for his whereabouts.

The French tactician has confirmed to Goal Lokosa has already left the team and his case was finished and closed.

“On Junior [Lokosa], I don’t know his whereabouts, he left the club and you know I already talked about it because we have good strikers in our squad,” Da Rosa told Goal on Wednesday.

“I didn’t see him in training since four weeks and I think the matter is finished now and we don’t have to revisit it, and you know like I said before in captain John [Bocco], Chris [Mugalu] and Meddie [Kagere], we have three good strikers in our squad.”

The Nigerian striker joined Simba as a free agent after being released by the Tunisian heavyweights after he was deemed surplus to requirements and was dropped by coach Moine Chaabani alongside fellow countryman Samuel Atvati and Algerian Tayeb Meziani.

The 26-year-old was signed by Esperance after a good run in the Nigerian Professional League in 2018 where he managed to score 19 goals to emerge the top scorer.

However, he did not have an impact at the North African outfit owing to a cruciate injury and struggled, made only 11 appearances for the team, scoring two goals in the process.

On another signing, defender Peter Muduhwa from Zimbabwe, who is also yet to play for Simba, Da Rosa said: “Peter [Muduhwa] is a good player but you know with Joash [Onyango], with Pascal [Wawa] the challenge is very tough for him and so he needs to be patient but as I have already said, in the future he could be a very vital player for Simba.”

Simba are currently chasing to retain the league title and the domestic Cup and have also put one leg in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
