'Orlando Pirates must know they belong in the Caf Champions League - Hlatshwayo

The skipper has revealed he is far from being impressed with what they achieved in the just concluded season

Orlando Pirates captain Thulani Hlatshwayo has promised to help the Premier Soccer League side to fight and earn a Caf Champions League ticket next season.

Tyson, as Hlatshwayo is known in football circles, has claimed the Bucs do not belong to the Confederation Cup and must work hard and ensure they join the Champions League elite, a place where he feels they belong. Pirates secured a ticket to the continent's second-tier club competition for next season after failing to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for the PSL title once again.

This year in the continental contest, Pirates were eliminated by Raja Casablanca.

"A team like Pirates need to play Champions League every season, not the Confederation Cup. We must always strive to compete in the bigger scheme of things. Going forward we must know we belong in the Champions League," Hlatshwayo told Sowetan Live.

"We’ll be returning to the Confederation Cup, we will give our all and make sure the following season it’s the Champions League that we play in."

Winning the MTN8 trophy, according to the league winner with Bidvest Wits in 2016/17, is not enough for a club of Pirates' stature. The trophy helped the club end a six-year spell without a single title in the cabinet.

"Yes, we won the MTN8, but that is not enough for a club like the Pirates. We had a mediocre season, to be honest. We need to do more," added the skipper.

After finishing second in the 2017/18 and 18/19 seasons, Bucs concluded the last campaign in third spot but Hlatshwayo has promised to fight for the league title in the next season.

"Our goal in the upcoming season is to win the league. I can promise that we will fight and we’ll compete. We want to make our fans happy by challenging for the league title again," he concluded

At an individual level, Hlatshwayo - who was named the captain in his debut Pirates season, did not have a solid season at Bucs as he rarely featured, especially towards the end of the season, given numerous mistakes on the pitch. He was also snubbed in the Uganda friendly as Bafana Bafana went on to win the fixture 3-2.

Eriksen to be fitted with heart-starting device after cardiac attack

After a series of tests were carried out by experts in the field, the Inter star will have a potentially life-saving device implanted

Christian Eriksen will be fitted with an ICD - a heart defibrillator - after he suffered a cardiac incident in the match against Finland, Denmark have confirmed.

The Inter star fell to the pitch unconscious on the second match day of Euro 2020 and had to be resuscitated before then being transported to hospital.

Now, after a series of tests carried out by medical specialists, it has been announced that Eriksen will have a potentially life-saving implant installed.

What has been said?

National team doctor Morten Boesen has been in contact with the cardiac specialist at Rigshospitalet and Christian Eriksen and this is the latest status.

“After Christian has been through different heart examinations it has been decided that he should have an ICD (heart starter). This device is necessary after a cardiac attack due to rhythm disturbances.

“Christian has accepted the solution and the plan has moreover been confirmed by specialists nationally and internationally who all recommend the same treatment.

“We encourage everybody to give Christian and his family peace and privacy the following time.”

Has Eriksen spoken since the incident?

Yes. Taking to social media on Tuesday, the attacking midfielder wrote:

"Big thanks for your sweet and amazing greetings and messages from all around the world. It means a lot to me and my family.

"I'm fine - under the circumstances. I still have to go through some examinations at the hospital, but I feel okay.

"Now, I will cheer on the boys on the Denmark team in the next matches. Play for all of Denmark."

Will he be able to play football again?

It is not yet known whether Eriksen will be able to play football again.

It is not unheard of, though, as the example of German forward Daniel Engelbrecht showed.

Engelbrecht collapsed on the pitch while playing for Stuttgart Kickers in July 2013, having suffered from a heart attack.

He was then fitted with a defibrillator and returned to the pitch in November of 2014 after 17 months of recovery.

However, Engelbrecht suffered from more heart issues down the line and hung up his boots in 2018 to concentrate on a career in coaching.

In terms of players still in the game, Ajax and Netherlands star Daley Blind continues to play at the highest level after having an ICD implanted in December 2019.

Ouna: Coach insists Gor Mahia were not better than Mathare United apart from 'fluke goal'

The Slum Boys are at the bottom of the table with just eight points from 18 matches played

Coach Frank Ouna believes his team Mathare United played better despite falling to Gor Mahia who scored a 'fluke' goal in Wednesday's Football Kenya Federation Premier League outing.

After a rather poor start from both sides, K’Ogalo finally benefited from an own goal after the ‘Slum Boys’ defender Lennox Ogutu directed a left-footed cross from Alpha Onyango into his own net to hand the champions a sixth straight win in a row.

However, the youthful coach was impressed with the way the 2008 league champions played.

"Before Gor Mahia scored that fluke goal, we were the better side having created many scoring chances," the tactician told Goal.

"They did not create better chances than we did. My boys played well, and if we continue creating chances as we did then goals will come. It is just a matter of continuing psyching the players and encouraging them. The game against Gor Mahia was the best game they have played since I joined them.

"Results will come so we should not panic; we are playing well, so it is just about scoring goals."

Ouna went on to explain why he needs experienced players on the pitch as they fight relegation. He also explained what Mathare chairman Bob Munro feels about the team.

"Clifford Alwanga and Chris Oduor are the most experienced players in my team and they are helping in motivating the young players and guiding them on and off the pitch.

"They might not be as fast as they used to be owing to age, but they give me more than speed.

"My chairman Bob [Munro] is giving me a lot of confidence because he sees things as I do. He believes the win is just a match away because he always attends our matches and sees improvements."

The win kept Gor Mahia in fourth spot on the 18-team table with 34 points from 18 matches while KCB, who beat Bidco United 1-0 have displaced Tusker from the top on 39 points from 19 outings.

Gor are now on course to win a double as they are also in the final of the Shield Cup where they will face rivals AFC Leopards on July 4.

On the other hand, Mathare are at the bottom of the table with eight points after 18 matches as well.

FA investigating Cavani over offensive Insta post

The Ukrainian has opened up on his difficult three-year stint at Anfield, admitting to struggles "with the weather and the rhythm of the games"

Andriy Voronin has opened up on why he "couldn't cope" at Liverpool, citing his failure to understand the Scouse accent in conversations with Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.

Voronin joined Liverpool on a free transfer back in 2007, penning a four-year deal at Anfield, but he was sold just two seasons into that agreement after struggling to adapt to the demands of English football.

The former striker, who now serves as assistant manager for the Ukraine national team, has now admitted that he never really settled on Merseyside and had issues communicating with his team-mates.

What's been said?

Asked what he remembers from his time with the Reds, Voronin told Goal and SPOX: "Scouse. I understood almost nothing, my English wasn't good anyway. When Carragher and Gerrard talked, I asked them to repeat it in English.

"Liverpool didn't suit me as a city overall, even though it has a lot of history to offer, such as the Beatles. My father is a big fan of the band.

"When I told him I had signed with Liverpool, he started crying. I also couldn't cope with the weather and the rhythm of the games without a winter break. I was just traveling and playing, which was very exhausting."

Voronin's record at Liverpool

Voronin only managed to appear in 40 games across all competitions for Liverpool after quickly being reduced to a bit-part role in the squad under Rafael Benitez.

The Ukrainian contributed just five goals to their cause, and after a brief loan spell at Hertha, he was snapped up for a £4 million fee by Dynamo Moscow in January 2010.

Voronin's toughest opponent

Voronin came up against a number of the world's best players over the course of his career, having won 75 caps for Ukraine in addition to playing in the Champions League with Liverpool.

The 41-year-old ranks ex-Italy and Juventus captain Fabio Cannavaro and Real Madrid and Brazil legend Roberto Carlos among his most difficult opponents, but has also included Carragher after a number of intense battles against the centre-back in training at Anfield.

"Carragher, among others. I hated playing against him in training," Voronin said on the subject of the toughest defenders he's faced. "I would also include Fabio Cannavaro, a great player and a great guy.

"Playing against Roberto Carlos was a disaster. He runs so much, he has two or three hearts. After ten minutes, I said, 'Roberto, give me five minutes, please!'

"He didn't run after me, I ran after him."

MLS Cup preview, picks: Will Portland celebrate Timbers triumph?

The winger's shocking name-falsification revelation shone a light on the challenges African youngsters face seeking a career in Europe

On the morning of June 8 the football world woke up to a rather bizarre tale surrounding one of the game’s most exciting young talents.

A statement from Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart revealed that 21-year-old Silas Wamangituka, whose searing pace and sterling contributions (11 goals and five assists in 25 league matches) had helped the club to a ninth-place finish in the German top flight in its first season up from the second tier, was in fact 22-year-old Silas Katompa Mvumpa.

The story, a sordid affair involving a duplicitous agent and forgery, is one that seems to confirm a L’Equipe investigation from 2019 .

The French publication uncovered evidence of attempts by Congolese club president to extort the player and former club Paris FC on account of what he termed a 'fraudulent transfer' from his club 'under the name… Wamangituka'.

Katompa Mvumpa’s side of the story fingers his former representative – a Congolese lawyer who brought him to Europe for the first time in 2017 – as being responsible for the subterfuge.

It is alleged that this individual surreptitiously altered the youngster’s identification sometime in late 2017, ostensibly to keep the player under his thumb, and helped himself to a cut of his wages under threat of ruin.

Only following his move to Stuttgart and the forming of a “relationship of trust' with the Swabian club did Katompa Mvumpa finally muster the courage to not only reveal the truth, but also sever ties with the agent and wrest control of his career and future back.

Tremendous credit is due Stuttgart for their handling of a delicate situation, and for providing a frightened player a safe space and unerring support through a difficult time.

That said, this is far from a freak set of circumstances; it is, sadly, an all too familiar narrative where African players are concerned.

The vast economic disparities between African and European football, as well as the global appeal of the latter, means that much of player development in Africa is export-facing. Young, optimistic players on the continent dream of making the move across the Mediterranean, and year after year their ambition is taken advantage of by unscrupulous agents.

The methods vary. A lot of the time, however, youngsters are actively encouraged to falsify important personal details, such as names and dates of birth. In fact, so rampant is this requirement (and the rot it has caused) that it has come to be regarded as a matter of course, giving rise to the concept of 'football age': in order to meet the specifications of visiting scouts, young players are advised to take years off the clock.

In certain cases, multiple passports are required to perpetuate this falsehood.

As a result, a clever ruse that is often employed is the deliberate misspelling of a player’s name, which provides plausible deniability—this is then reported after the fact as a clerical error of some sort. Complete falsification of the name – as in Katompa Mvumpa’s case – is rarer but not unheard of: the curious case of former Nigeria international Richard Eromoigbe serves as an example.

Ahead of the 2001 Fifa Under-17 World Cup, midfielder John Akhimien had a problem.

An investigation found that he had attended trials as a 20-year-old (per his international passport) in Poland, a not insignificant detail that stood in the way of his inclusion in Nigeria’s squad to Trinidad and Tobago. The solution was amusing by its simplicity. Akhimien simply walked into the Passport Office and emerged with a whole new identity: not only was he now within the age limit, but he also had become Richard Eromoigbe.

Improbably, when the scheme was uncovered (conveniently after Nigeria had finished second at the Under-17 World Cup), Akhimien claimed he was within his rights, and that he had assumed his new identity to honour the memory of his dead father of the same name, and not as a means to beat the system.

“The decision to change my name is my own,” he said at the time. “I don't need permission from anybody apart from members of my family. I changed my name from John Akhimen to Richard Eromoigbe so that my late father's name could be immortalised.”

Eromoigbe would, of course, go on to represent Nigeria at senior international level (earning three caps) and play in the Champions League with Levski Sofia. Now aged 36, the long-throw exponent has been retired from football since 2012.

In all, it is important to emphasize these players are, at the heart of it, the victims.

They are victims of a society where the absence of a development pathway, rampant unchecked corruption and poverty, a lack of imagination in leadership positions, poor access to quality education, floundering to non-existent league structures, and inadequate infrastructure all combine in a poisonous cocktail that sparks desperation.

Football, more than a simple career pursuit, is considered a way out; for that escape, they will do anything, even entrust their futures to wolves in sheep’s clothing who leave a trail of false promises for them to follow.

Lacking the literacy and world-weariness to navigate a new environment, they necessarily place themselves in the hands of their representatives completely, with the sort of outcomes that Katompa Mvumpa had to endure for close to four years.

Nigerian midfielder Sunday Stephen, who was left stranded in Europe as a teenager before good fortune saw him earn a deal with La Liga club Valencia, was unequivocal in his advice to young, vulnerable African players seeking to forge a career in Europe.

“My advice to young players would be to take one step at the time," he told Al Jazeera in 2015, "stay focused and not allow any agent distract them from what they are doing.

“One needs to give an agent two years [before trusting him]. If he really cares about you and wants the best for you and your career, he will stick with you and press clubs until he finds the right one.”

Sound advice, but even that would only be addressing the problem superficially. The roots run a lot deeper.

Every Premier League winning team - ranked

The Spanish international has been been lauded over the years for his commitment and performances on the pitch by the greats of the game..

Sergio Ramos is leaving Real Madrid after 16 years with Los Blancos, the club confirmed on Wednesday. The club have announced a press conference will be held on Thursday to bid farewell to the veteran defender.

Ramos joined the capital club from Sevilla in 2005. He has played over 670 games for the club and won five Liga titles and the Champions League four times.

During his stint as a Real Madrid player, he has rubbed shoulders with some of the greats of the game, who has gone on to hail Ramos for his gritty performances and match-winning moments.

What did Zinedine Zidane say about Ramos?

The former Real Madrid coach hailed him as the 'best in history'.

"The best? He is one of them, of course," Zidane told reporters after a win over Inter Milan in November 2020. "What he has done, what he is, what he has shown in Madrid. I think he is the best in history."

What did Iker Casillas say to Ramos after winning the La Decima?

A mistake by Casillas in goal allowed Diego Godin to score for Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final in 2014. It was an injury-time header by Ramos that bailed out Madrid on that occasion. After the regulation time, Casillas was seen embracing Ramos and whispering something in his ears.

“I told him: ‘You're the f*cking boss and will always be the player who delivered LA DECIMA!’ Then I gave him a kiss,” he revealed.

“For me, finally winning it was a relief. I felt very happy for the fans. I suppose suffering for so long to win it gave it a special flavour. We'd gone through a few tough years in Europe and at last we were able to achieve such an important success.”

When David Beckham congratulated Ramos

Beckham and Ramos shared the dressing room for two years in the early part of the previous decade. When Ramos became the most-capped player for Spain, he put out a congratulatory message.

"My friend, mi amigo. This is an incredible moment for you. I just wanted to send you a message because you've played 168 games for your country. You must be very proud. Your family must be very proud. It's an incredible moment, passing Iker. So, I'm very happy for you and your family. Congratulations my friend, a kiss for you. Enjoy the night. Lots of love my friend and congratulations."

When Toni Kroos called Ramos the 'best captain'!

In a press conference with the German national team, Kroos showered praise on his soon-to-be ex-skipper.

"I believe that we don't have to speak about the importance of Sergio [Ramos] for Real Madrid. He has always been a great teammate and a great captain, he has been the best captain that I have had in my career," he stated.

When Barcelona player Sergio Busquets felt 'proud' of Ramos

The Barcelona midfielder happens to be the national teammate of Ramos and when the former Real Madrid player surpassed Casillas' Spanish appearances, Busquets lauded him.

"What he has achieved for his club and the national team is staggering. We are very proud to play alongside him."

Netherlands vs Austria: Team news & key stats

Defender Matthijs de Ligt missed his country's opening match with a groin problem although the Juventus man could play some part on Thursday evening.

Austria remain reliant on moments of magic from David Alaba and Marcel Sabitzer while forward Marko Arnautovic has been suspended for one match following UEFA's investigation .

Key stats:

The Netherlands have won each of their last six matches against Austria, twice as many wins compared to their 13 previous encounters with the Austrians (W3 D4 L6). Austria’s last victory dates back to May 1990, in a pre-World Cup friendly in Vienna (3-2).

The last seven matches between the Netherlands and Austria have produced 30 goals, an average of 4.3 per game.

Austria have always found the net when playing the Netherlands on their own soil (8 matches). However, only one of those eight matches has seen Austria prevail – it was in their first ever meeting, at Amsterdam’s Olympisch Stadion in December 1933 (0-1).

The ball will be put out of play in the 10th minute in honour of Christian Eriksen, who survived a cardiac arrest over the weekend...

Denmark host Belgium in their next Group B outing in the Euro 2020 at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen on Thursday.

However far Denmark go in Euro 2020, it pales in significance to the health of their star midfielder Christian Eriksen, as well as the wellbeing of his team-mates who were so clearly affected by Saturday’s events in Copenhagen.

Belgium are looking to register three consecutive victories against Denmark for the first time in their history, after winning 4-2 in November 2020 and 2-0 in September 2020 in the UEFA Nations League. Belgium are unbeaten in three against Denmark (W2 D1), with their last such defeat coming in September 1995 (1-3).

Romelu Lukaku (2020 and 2016) is only the second Belgium player to score in at least two different European Championships, after Jan Ceulemans in 1980 and 1984. In fact, his total of nine goals at major tournaments (World Cup + Euros) is more than any other Belgian in history.

Dries Mertens could make his 100th appearance for the Belgium national team in this fixture, and would become the fifth player to reach this milestone, alongside Jan Vertonghen, Axel Witsel, Toby Alderweireld and Eden Hazard.

However, the scoreline in Finland's historic victory against Denmark in their first ever appearance at a major tournament was secondary following the incident involving Christian Eriksen in the first half, which led to the game being halted for a couple of hours.

Denmark vs Belgium: Team news & stats

The Danish players will be looking to putting a strong show against the world number one team. Whereas Belgium could see their side further strengthened by the possible return of both Kevin De Bruyne and Axel Witsel.

Key stats:

Denmark and Belgium’s only previous meeting at a major tournament was in the group stages of Euro 1984. Denmark won 3-2 after having been 2-0 down, one of only six times a two-goal deficit has been overcome in a win at the tournament.

Belgium have won four of their last five matches at the European Championships (L1), as many as they had won across their first 13 games in the competition (W4 D2 L7).

Romelu Lukaku has been directly involved in 26 goals in his 19 games for Belgium since the end of the 2018 World Cup (22 goals, 4 assists). Indeed, during this run Lukaku has only failed to score or assist in three of those 19 appearances, one of which came against Denmark in September 2020.

Manchester United 'very, very close' to signing Raphael Varane

The 10th minute has been selected as the moment for the display in recognition of the stricken midfielder's No. 10 shirt

Belgium have announced they will put the ball out of play in the 10th minute vs Denmark on Wednesday to recognise Christian Eriksen, who experienced cardiac arrest over the weekend during a match against Finland.

Eriksen, who wears No. 10 for Denmark, is stable and awake now after collapsing on the pitch, so the moment will be a celebration for his survival and improved health.

Romelu Lukaku shouted "Chris, I love you" into a TV camera after scoring vs Russia on Saturday mere hours after Eriksen's collapse. Lukaku and Eriksen are club team-mates at Inter.

What has been said?

"This is about a celebration in football and for Christian," said Belgium boss Roberto Martinez to reporters.

"As you can imagine, the uncertainty that we had when the incident happened, that was a really tough moment, a tough moment for any player that was watching the game, a tough moment for players who have been sharing dressing rooms with Christian.

"Then from that point on, once you get the good news that Christian reacted positively, that he was talking, that he was in hospital, now it's almost a celebration."
