LIVE: Ukraine vs North Macedonia

Angelovski will be aware that his team must get a result here, otherwise they face an early exit from Euro 2020. While Pandev saw his goal ruled out, North Macedonia have failed to test Ukraine barring that and he may want to add some attacking impetus up top. In contrast, Shevchenko will be delighted with his men's first-half efforts.

North Macedonia's fast-paced start had Ukraine looking slightly nervous. Shevchenko's men quickly asserted their dominance, however, as Yarmonlenko poked home from a corner to open the scoring. Yaremchuk then doubled their lead before Pandev saw his cool, left-footed chip ruled out for offside. As the two teams wander down the tunnel at half-time, Ukraine lead this game in Bucharest 2-0.

45' + 1' HALF-TIME: UKRAINE 2-0 NORTH MACEDONIA

45' The fourth official indicates there will be just the one minute of added time as Ukraine patiently work possession around the back.

42' Yaremchuk brings down a long pass before exchanging a one-two with Zinchenko. Alongside Malinovskiy, the Manchester City man and his midfield partner are dominating this game and North Macedonia are struggling to get near to the pair.

40' SAVE! Alioski needlessly messes around outside his own area and Zinchenko dispossesses him before sliding right to Karavaev. The right-back drills a low right-footed effort and, via the help of a deflection, Dimitrievski manages to scramble around and make a low save inside his own six-yard area at the second attempt.

39' NO GOAL! Pandev thinks he has got his side back in the game as he cuts in from the right of goal before lifting a left-footed chip over the incoming Bushchan. A smart finish immediately gets ruled out for offside as the North Macedonian forward had strayed well past the last defender in the build-up to the chance.

38' It's the same duo again that profited against the Netherlands. Yarmolenko adds another assist to his European Championship tally, while Yaremchuk has now scored in three consecutive appearances for Ukraine. In fact, Yarmolenko and Yaremchuk are the first ever duo to both score in both of their side's opening two matches at a single European Championship tournament.

36' Elmas nearly swivels past two tackles inside the Ukraine area as he manages to stay on his feet and chase towards the byline. Unfortunately for the forward, the ball goes out of play and Buschan gets a goal-kick, which he sends long.

33' Yarmalenko has scored (two) or assisted (one) three of Ukraine's five goals at the European Championships. It's also the first time since October 2016 that Yarmolenko has scored in three consecutive games for Ukraine.

31' After scoring the opening goal, Yarmonlenko finds himself on the floor due to a heavy tackle in the middle of the park. The Ukraine physios come on and Shevchenko's captain is quickly back to his feet and ready to carry on.

28' Musliu's poor pass allows Zinchenko to find Yaremchuk through the middle. The forward, rather negatively, opts to play backwards and Ukraine retain possession. Would Shevchenko prefer his forward to be a little braver there and attack the three-man defence in front of him?

27' Zinchenko tries to improvise and chip over the top for Yarmolenko but he overhits his pass and it goes out for a goal-kick. In the build-up, Malinovskiy goes down off the ball from Spirovski's foul, however, the referee plays advantage and the opportunity comes to nothing.

26' Only current Ukraine manager Shevchenko (48) has scored more goals for Ukraine than Andriy Yarmolenko (41), with Yarmolenko looking to score in three consecutive matches for his national side for the first time since October 2016.

24' CHANCE! A mistake from Angelovski's men allows Yarmolenko the chance to drive down the right-hand side before he squares up Musliu to cut back in on his left foot from the right of goal. The Ukraine captain looks for the top left corner, like he did against the Netherlands, but his left-footed strike gets deflected and Dimitrievski manages to parry away a comfortable save.

23' Pandev uses all of his experience as he invites Matvyenko to foul him and the centre-back duly obliges. North Macedonia get a free-kick and, perhaps more importantly, the chance to catch a well-deserved breather.

21' Yaremchuk feeds Karavaev, who makes it to the byline on the right before cutting back to the forward near the penalty spot. Yaremchuk's first touch, however, lets him down and the opportunity goes abegging.

19' Bardhi plays through the legs of Zinchenko before passing to Pandev, who outpaces Yarmolenko on the left-hand touchline. The forward then looks inside but none of his team-mates are there and Zinchenko recovers to regain possession.

17' CLOSE! Nikolov finds a yard of space in the right-hand channel and he arrows a low cross towards the near post. Elmas drifts away from his man and looks to turn a right-footed shot towards the bottom right corner. Unfortunately for Angelovski's men, Elmas' deft touch goes just wide of goal to the right and Bushchan isn't required to make a save.

15' Nikolov drives down the right-hand side before playing to Bardhi, who sees his long-range effort blocked. The loose ball falls back to Nikolov, who completely miscues his effort and his right-footed strike ends up nearer to the corner flag than Buschan's goal.

13' Alioski works it to Bardhi and he finds Nikolov, who from the right flank look to cross towards the near post. His attempted cross gets blocked, however, that passage of play shows North Macedonia are more than capable of working possession about themselves and they're not just going to sit back and defend.

12' Yaremchuk spins past Velkovski and powers towards the right of goal, where he looks to square towards the back post. Remarkably, Ristovski does excellently to recover and produce a last-ditch block which stops what looked to be a certain goal.

11' Ukraine and North Macedonia’s four previous meetings have only produced four goals (3 for Ukraine, 1 for North Macedonia). Despite this, it has been an incredibly open start in Bucharest.

10' WIDE! From the resulting set-piece, Malinovskiy delivers towards the far post, where Yarmolenko uses his strength to get in front of his opposite man. Despite working hard to find space, the Ukraine captain can only poke wide with his left foot at the back post and the chance to test Dimitrievski fades away.

9' SAVE! Malinovskiy wanders over to the right of the area before setting his sights on the bottom right corner with his left foot. Dimitrievski initially appears wrong footed but he does well to get across and tip around the post for a corner.

8' Yarmolenko sees his right-footed strike deflected behind and Ukraine get the first corner of the game. Shaparenko's delivery causes chaos at the near post, however, Elmas eventually manages to clear.

7' Karavaev plays inside and via Malinovskiy, Stepanenko and Zinchenko, the ball finds left-back Mykolenko, who sensibly opts to play backwards as Shevchenko's team remain patient in possession as they look to carve out an opening.

6' Nikolov's touch lets him down as Zinchenko presses him on the right-hand touchline. After North Macedonia's fast-paced start, Ukraine are growing into the game and slowly asserting their dominance on proceedings.

5' Dimitrievski is called upon to punch away Malinovskiy's cross before Karavaev powers a right-footed volley well over the crossbar from around 25 yards out.

4' Malinovskiy catches Ristovski with a high foot and the centre-back wins another free-kick for his team inside their own half. If it wasn't the opening stages of the game, the Ukrainian may have ended up in the book there.

3' Alioski looks over the top for the run of Elmas but the chipped pass skips away from the forward and ends up in the hands of Bushchan. The North Macedonians have started well in Bucharest.

2' Spiroski arrows a smart pass out to the left-hand side to Alioski, who immediately finds Pandev. The forward goes down and wins the first free-kick of the game near the halfway line.

1' With the national anthems over and done with, referee Fernando Rapallini gets the game underway!

Ukraine have beaten North Macedonia in both of their competitive encounters prior to this match (1-0 at home and 2-0 away, in qualifiers for Euro 2016).

Angelovski opts for just the one alteration to the starting line-up that lost against Austria. Up front, Trajkovski makes way and Spirovski replaces him, meaning Elmas will likely occupy a more advanced role against Ukraine today. Apart from that, the starting-11 remains unchanged and left wing-back Alioski needs to be careful as he is one booking away from a suspension at Euro 2020.

Andriy Shevchenko makes two changes to the side that narrowly lost last time out. Oleksandr Zubkov misses out through injury and Shaparenko takes his place, meaning Malinovskiy will move further forward to partner Yaremchuk and Yarmolenko up top. The other change sees Sydorchuk drop to the bench and Stepanenko comes into the midfield for him.

SUBS: Egzon Bejtulai, Ivan Trickovski, Ferhan Hasani, Daniel Avramoski, Aleksandar Trajkovski, Risto Jankov, Darko Churlinov, Marjan Radeski, Kire Ristevski, Tihomir Kostadinov, Milan Ristovski, Damjan Siskovski.

NORTH MACEDONIA (3-4-1-2): Stole Dimitrievski; Stefan Ristovski, Darko Velkoski, Visar Musliu; Ezgjan Alioski, Stefan Spirovski, Arijan Ademi, Boban Nikolov; Enis Bardhi; Goran Pandev, Eljif Elmas.

SUBS: Sergey Krivtsov, Viktor Tsygankov, Artem Dovbyk, Oleksandr Tymchyk, Andriy Eduard Sobol, Anatolii Trubin, Serhiy Sydorchuk, Heorhii Sudakov, Marlos Bonfim, Artem Besedin, Evgeniy Makarenko.

UKRAINE (4-3-3): Georgi Bushchan; Oleksandr Karavaev, Illia Zabarnyi, Mykola Matvyenko, Vitalii Mykolenko; Oleksandr Zinchenko, Taras Stepanenko, Mykola Shaparenko; Andriy Yarmolenko, Ruslan Malinovskiy, Roman Yaremchuk.

Just like Ukraine, North Macedonia also succumbed to late defeat in their opening Group C fixture. A historic Goran Pandev goal had the visitors level, however, two late goals from the Austrians resigned Igor Angelovski’s side to a 3-1 defeat in Bucharest.

Ukraine came out on the wrong end of a five-goal thriller against Netherlands in what was arguably the game of the tournament so far. A 3-2 loss for the hosts will still have encouraged them and they will be looking to collect their first points of Euro 2020 against Euro 2020’s lowest-ranked side today.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the Euro 2020 Group C clash between Ukraine and North Macedonia.

Are Man United's strikers to blame for woeful away form?

After 16 years in the Spanish capital, the legendary centre-back is heading for pastures new despite wanting to continue with Los Blancos

Sergio Ramos has said that he intended to accept Real Madrid's offer of a one-year extension but was told that he had run out of time to accept it.

The former Blancos captain will, as a result, leave the Santiago Bernabeu after 16 years of service in the famous white shirt.

The centre-back will continue to play football at the highest level, but claims that he does not know which team he will represent next season.

What did Ramos say about the extension?

Speaking at a press conference, Ramos said: “ The first thing I want to say is that I never wanted to leave. I wanted to stay here. The club offered me the possibility of extending my contract, but because of covid it was put on the back burner.

“Then club made me a one-year offer with a salary reduction. I have to say that there was no economic problem. I wanted two years and peace of mind for me and my family.

“During the last talks, I accepted the one-year offer, but I was informed that it was no longer possible, that it had an expiration date and that I had not heard about it.”

He added on the specifics of the contract: The conditions have changed several times, on their part and on ours.

“It got to a point where we had to make a decision but they never told me that the offer had an expiry date. It's understandable but it surprised me, that the offer had expired.”

'A person of integrity'

Ramos leaves behind an incredible legacy in Madrid, the 35-year-old having won five La Liga titles, two Copas del Rey, four Supercopas de Espana, four Champions Leagues, three UEFA Super Cups and four Club World Cups.

“I'm one of those people who likes to be defined by others,” said. “If I had to use one word it would be purity. I have given my soul for this club. That's how I want to be remembered, as a person of integrity.

Relationship with Perez

Despite the breakdown in communication over a contract extension, Ramos insists that he harbours no ill will towards club president Florentino Perez.

“My relationship with the president has always been good,” he said. “Like a father and son in sporting terms. He is the one who brought me here and I'll never say a word against him. There are fights in families as well.

Next destination

“The important thing is not where you are, it's with who,” said of where he might end up next season. “We haven't thought at any time about any other club. Since January, when I've been on the market, we've had a few calls.

“But we never thought about leaving Madrid. From here we'll look for a good option for me.

“Sevilla is the other club in my heart where I had a great time but at the moment there is nothing on the table about going back. As for Barcelona... impossible. You will never see Sergio Ramos in a Barcelona shirt.”

Ashley Young set for Aston Villa return after snubbing Burnley

The 35-year-old is leaving Inter after winning the Serie A title with the club and is heading back to the Premier League

Ashley Young is on the verge of a return to the Premier League with former club Aston Villa, Goal can confirm.

The 35-year-old, who will leave Inter at the end of the month when his contract expires, had been attracting interest from Watford and Burnley before Dean Smith's side came calling.

The deal is currently being finalised and could be announced in the next 24 hours, with the former England international due to sign a short-term contract.

Young's career to date

Young spent four years with Villa after joining from Watford in 2007 and was a pivotal part of then-manager Martin O'Neill's side.

Indeed, Villa pushed for Champions League qualification in the 2009-10 season, with Young, along with James Milner, starring, although he would eventually go on to join Manchester United in 2011.

He won five trophies at Old Trafford, including the Premier League, Europa League and FA Cup, before departing for Inter in 2020.

Under Antonio Conte's management, Young would win the Serie A title in the 2020-21 campaign, with the 35-year-old now having decided to head back to England following the departure of the former Inter head coach.

On the international stage, Young earned 39 caps for England, scoring seven times.

Any other business at Villa?

As confirmed by Goal, Villa have had a £25 million ($35m) bid for Emile Smith Rowe rejected by Arsenal.

The north Londoners, who sold Emiliano Martinez to their Premier League rivals last summer, are keen to hold onto the England Under-21 international and are in talks to renew his contract.

This comes after Villa signed Norwich playmaker Emi Buendia for £35m ($50m), who was also on the Gunners' transfer radar.

Smith's side have also decided to release Ahmed Elmohamady, Neil Taylor and Tom Heaton, while Mbwana Samatta has been sold to Fenerbahce for an undisclosed fee.

Bafana Bafana avoid guests Senegal as Cosafa Cup groups are revealed

The new South Africa technical team will start planning for their opponents at the regional football competition

Bafana Bafana have been drawn in a Cosafa Cup group which includes Lesotho, Botswana and Eswatini.

This year’s tournament will be staged in Gqeberha from July 7 to 18 in what would be the 20th edition of the competition which has Senegal as guest participants this time.

None of Bafana’s Group A opponents has ever won the Cosafa Cup before while the hosts are four-time champions.

Interestingly, one of their group competitors Lesotho are under former South Africa assistant coach Thabo Senong who has already included in his squad three Premier Soccer League players.

Midfielders Tshwarelo Bereng of Marumo Gallants FC and Black Leopards’ Tumelo Khutlang as well as Bloemfontein Celtic forward Sera Motebang are in the Lesotho squad.

It is, however, Group C which appears to be the most difficult as it involves Zimbabwe, Senegal, Mozambique and Namibia.

It would be interesting to witness the clash between record champions Zimbabwe and Wafu Cup of Nations reigning champions Senegal.

No guest participants have ever won the Cosafa Cup and the Teranga Lions would be keen to break that record.

Another Group C contestant Namibia won the 2015 edition.

In Group B, defending champions Zambia will come up against Malawi, Madagascar and Comoros.

Madagascar became the latest team to confirm their participation while fellow Indian Ocean islanders Mauritius will be absent from this year’s edition.

This year’s Cosafa Cup has “a new format with the 12 teams split into three groups each containing four teams. This ensures each side will play a minimum of three matches,” according to Cosafa in a statement.

“The top team in each pool, as well as the best second-placed finisher, will advance to the semi-finals. There will be no Plate competition.”

This year marks the return of the Cosafa Cup after it was suspended last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Next month’s competition will see some teams using it to prepare for September’s Fifa World Cup qualifiers as Zimbabwe did in 2019 to gear up for the Africa of Nations finals.

Nigeria coach Rohr wary of Benin ahead of crucial Afcon qualifier

The African football great has been tipped to come good in Russia, having previously worked with great managers during his playing career

Yaya Toure will succeed in his coaching role at FK Akhmat, according to coach Henry Abiodun who feels the experience garnered during his active days would count.

After leaving his first managerial job at Olimpik Donetsk, the Ivorian was handed a one-year deal that will see him at the Russian Premier League side for the 2021-22 campaign.

The four-time African Player of the Year winner is now expected to assist Andrei Talalayev in the dugout at the Akhmat Arena.

Several high-profile footballers have ended up becoming successful managers, and the former Sunshine Stars handler does not expect the former Barcelona and Manchester City star to fail in Akhmat.

“Well, I think it’s a good one. Each time we have an African given such an opportunity, I am always excited,” Abiodun told Goal.

“It is not an opportunity we get on a daily basis – it is very rare I must say, and when we get them with someone like Yaya Toure who has paid his dues in world football, we can only wish him all the best.

“For me, I believe he will have a lot to offer and I have no doubt that he is going to do well.”

Moreover, the Football Coaches Association of Africa Nations’ director of coaching education also provides a tip that will make the 38-year-old thrive under manager Talalayev.

“Being a good player does not automatically translate into becoming a very good coach,” the veteran tactician continued.

“However, they pick things from their experience and when you play in Europe for example, you work with knowledgeable managers.

“This can be translated in seeing great players become a sound good coach. I believe that Yaya will be one of such.

“The most important thing for him is to understand playing is quite different from coaching.

“So, he needs to take himself off the game and focus on the players he wants to develop, be patient with them and see them grow especially around the four pillars of football.”

A legend with 101 Cote d’Ivoire caps to his credit, he spent eight memorable years at City between 2010 and 2018, winning three Premier League titles, two League Cups and the FA Cup.

Arsenal close to finalising new contract for star forward

AFC Leopards are on the verge of losing their top striker Elvis Rupia who will be a free agent in a month.

The experienced marksman has been consistent for the 13-time Football Kenya Federation Premier League champions, and to date he has scored 11 goals and created two, putting him second in the top scorers' chart which is led by Erick Kapaito of Kariobangi Sharks who has scored 14 goals.

With the likes of Tusker FC and unnamed Zambian teams interested in the player, Ingwe have to act first.

"Rupia will be a free agent in less than four weeks because his contract is almost ending," a source close to the player and club told Goal on Thursday.

"There are teams chasing the striker, we have about two from Zambia and one, Tusker, from the FKF Premier League.

"The Leopards management has not yet initiated extension talks which puts them in an awkward position of leaving on a free soon."

When reached for comment, the player was coy about his future, insisting he is still under contract at the club.

"Even if there is a month or so remaining in my contract, I have a duty to give my best," Rupia said.

"I am still Ingwe's player, and that is where my focus is. I will not comment on my future right now because in football, things change really fast."

Ingwe chairman Dan Shikanda was unavailable for comment since his phone was switched off.

Meanwhile, Leopards were forced to rally from behind and pick a 2-2 draw against Sofapaka in a league assignment at Wundanyi Stadium on Wednesday.

Lawrence Juma's brace was later canceled by efforts from striker Rupia and Austin Odhiambo to ensure the former league champions shared points in Taita Taveta county.

Juma, a consistent goalscorer for Sofapaka this season, scored in the first minute before Ingwe had even settled into the game. The former Nzoia Sugar and Gor Mahia midfielder completed his brace in the 10th minute to stun the visitors.

Rupia scored for AFC Leopards in the 18th minute from the spot after they recovered and started launching direct attacks against the 2009 Premier League champions.

After missing a clear opportunity in the early moments of the second half, Odhiambo finally helped AFC equalise in the 70th minute. The midfielder took a free-kick from the edge of the box and managed to power past an outstretched Kevin Omondi for his first goal of the season.

Chelsea predicted lineup vs Burnley - Premier League

Goal readers have had their say on whether the former Nigeria international remains valuable for any English top-flight side

Odion Ighalo still has something to offer a Premier League club, according to the majority of voters on Goal.

After completing his loan move to Manchester United – the 32-year-old joined Al Shabab on a two-and-a-half-year contract.

In his debut campaign at King Fahd Stadium, he scored nine goals in 13 appearances to tie with Portugal's Fabio Martins.

To cap it all, Ighalo was named Al Shabab Player of the Month for May.

Thanks to his notable performances in Saudi Arabia, Goal asked if the former Granada and Watford man still has anything to offer in the English elite division.

In a poll conducted on the Goal Africa Twitter handle, 67.8 percent of voters strongly agree that the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations highest goalscorer still has the spark that made him shine at Watford.

With this, it will not be surprising to see any England top-flight side looking towards his direction before the commencement of the 2021-22 season.

On the other hand, 32.2% feel his time in the Premier League is over and as such would not have anything to contribute.

Ighalo’s recent form has seen fans clamour for his return to Gernot Rohr’s Super Eagles.

Nonetheless, former England international of Nigerian descent John Fashanu disagreed with the idea of his return.

“Experience in football counts but we don’t want to do anything to upset the young boys or make them a little bit depressed,” Fashanu told the Punch.

“The only thing Ighalo has to offer to the national team is his experience, it is not his ability because there are players who are far better than him and we know that.

“If Rohr wants to bring him in because he stabilizes the squad, it is fine. I remember when I was in my 30s and the manager kept bringing me back, it wasn’t because I was a great player but I gave the team confidence. And that might also be the reason why Rohr wants to bring him back but other than that his time is gone.

“Ighalo is in his 30s and in Nigeria we have fantastic prospects that are fighting to get that spot but not all of them can make the squad.

“If you keep playing the older players it is at the detriment of the younger players. It is high time we start seeing 17, 18-year-old geniuses in the national team."

Buffon makes sensational Parma return after leaving Juventus

Gianluigi Buffon has been announced as a Parma player once again, 20 years after having left the club to join Juventus.

Pinto: Ruaraka Ground a struggle for technical Gor Mahia players against Mathare United

K'Ogalo are now third on the table after their sixth straight win in the Kenyan top-tier

Gor Mahia head coach Carlos Manuel Vaz Pinto concedes Mathare United made it tough for his team in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League assignment on Wednesday since they were fresh as opposed to his team.

In the match played at Ruaraka Grounds, K’Ogalo benefited from an-own goal after the ‘Slum Boys’ defender Lennox Ogutu directed a left-footed cross from Alpha Onyango into his own net to hand the champions a sixth straight win in a row.

But the tactician concedes it was not easy because also the pitch contributed to the struggles of the reigning champions.

"Always a tough match because [Mathare] were fresh; their last game was three weeks ago while our last match was three days ago which is totally different," the Portuguese tactician told Goal.

"And of course this type of ground gives an advantage to Mathare, because our players, of course, have more technique but we deserved to win because we controlled the game despite not creating many scoring opportunities but I think we were better than them."

"The win kept Gor Mahia in fourth spot on the 18-team table with 34 points from 18 matches while KCB, who beat Bidco United 1-0, displaced Tusker from the top on 39 points from 19 outings.

Gor are now on course to win a double as they are also in the final of the Shield Cup where they will face rivals AFC Leopards on July 4.

"We will fight, game by game, and I believe it is true we can win the league but we have other teams like Tusker, AFC Leopards, KCB, and [Kariobangi] Sharks who can win as well because the difference is not big," Pinto continued.

"Initially, the gap between us and the top team was 16 points, but it is five right now with one game in hand and because of that I believe we have the advantage.

"But our focus is on the next game because we take it game by game and we are here to fight. It is not easy playing a game after three days but we are giving our best."

Barca's financial woes ease after TV rights sale

The Denmark international collapsed during a Euro 2020 meeting with Finland and had to be resuscitated on the field

The first words of Christian Eriksen after he saw his life saved by medics during Denmark's clash with Finland at Euro 2020 have been revealed, with the Inter star telling doctors on the back of suffering cardiac arrest: "Oh sh*t, I'm only 29 years old."

The Danish playmaker collapsed in Copenhagen on Saturday and had to be resuscitated on the field after quick thinking from his team-mates and doctors.

He is now on the road to recovery, as he remains in hospital, but suffered a serious and unexpected health scare as a professional sportsman that was seemingly in peak physical condition.

What has been said?

German doctor Jens Kleinefeld, who helped deliver the shock that restarted Eriksen's heart, has told Bild on bringing the Dane back: "I was sitting in the stands on the opposite side when Eriksen collapsed. I didn't think anything of it at first. But then I saw the Danish team doctor acting relatively frantically, I realised it was not a normal injury.

"I messaged the sideline team and they ran onto the field. They had the defibrillator with them. I then told my colleague in the stands that we had to get onto the pitch.

"The Danish team doctor initially had difficulty fully grasping the situation. When you start reanimation, you have to do it as quickly as possible. But the team doctors mainly treat all kinds of injuries, so it's more difficult for them to recognise cardiac death directly.

"We have already seen that when they tried to pull the tongue out of the throat. That is nonsense, of course and doesn't save a life. A minimal hyperextension of the head is quite sufficient.

"Within the first two minutes, the shock should be delivered. With Eriksen, it took two or three minutes. That's when the chance of survival is very high. If the shock is delivered within the first two minutes, then the chance of survival is almost 90 per cent. The chance of survival drops 10 per cent per minute. We had to hurry.

"After two minutes, I saw that the shock was successful. Then it took another 20 or 30 seconds for Eriksen's consciousness to return.

"He opened his eyes and spoke to me. I asked him in English: Are you back? He said: 'Yes, I am here'. And then he said: 'Oh sh*t, I'm only 29 years old'.

"I told him that everything was fine now and there was no more danger. He immediately understood everything and was able to put his arm on his chest. This was a great example on how to save lives.

"I see myself as a lifesaver. Especially with the training beforehand. To me, it was just a normal operation. I just tuned everything out. It was a beautiful moment when Eriksen opened his eyes again."

How is Eriksen?

The former Tottenham star has sent a message to well wishers from his hospital bed and will be an interested observer when Denmark return to action on Thursday against Belgium.

He has posted on social media: "Big thanks for your sweet and amazing greetings and messages from all around the world. It means a lot to me and my family.

"I'm fine - under the circumstances. I still have to go through some examinations at the hospital, but I feel okay.

"Now, I will cheer on the boys on the Denmark team in the next matches. Play for all of Denmark."

It remains to be seen whether Eriksen will resume a competitive football career, but he will - like Netherlands defender Daley Blind - be fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD).

Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen has said: "After Christian has been through different heart examinations it has been decided that he should have an ICD.

"This device is necessary after cardiac attack due to rhythm disturbances.

"Christian has accepted the solution and the plan has moreover been confirmed by specialists nationally and internationally who all recommend the same treatment.

"We encourage everybody to give Christian and his family peace and privacy [in] the following time."

USMNT star Dike reacts to transfer 'noise' amid links to Leeds, Newcastle and Everton

The 21-year-old forward enjoyed a productive loan spell at Barnsley in 2020-21 and could soon be heading out of Orlando City

Daryl Dike is trying to turn a deaf ear to the transfer "noise" that he is generating, with the USMNT star seeing a productive loan spell at Barnsley in 2020-21 bring him to the attention of a number of Premier League sides.

The 21-year-old striker hit nine goals through 22 appearances for the Tykes last season, with his power and pace said to be drawing admiring glances from the likes of Leeds United, Newcastle and Everton.

There has even been talk of Manchester United and Chelsea buying into the potential of a United States international, but the Orlando City-owned frontman is reluctant to be drawn on where his future will lie.

What has been said?

Dike has told MLS Soccer on the speculation swirling around him: "For me, all that stuff is kinda extra noise.

"Obviously for me I’ve been blessed to go on the experience at Barnsley and play with the national team as well.

"I’ve had lot of experiences and I kind of told myself from the beginning I want to bring back everything that I’ve learned about the new culture, learned about the new style of play and come back here and kind of see how I’ve grown as a player.

"In terms of all the extra things happening, that’s just something when the time comes.

"For me right now, it’s focusing on acclimating back to the team and seeing how I can be able to affect the games in the next couple of weeks."

He added: "For me, I’ve always said I want to play in the top competitions, play against the top competition and play under the greatest staff.

"Thus far, I’ve been blessed with being able to see guys like Nani, [who has] won tons of competitions.

"For me, I want to be able compete at high levels, whether it be at World Cups and playing in all these top competitions in the world.

"For me, I just want to continue to grow as a player and be able to do those things."

The bigger picture

Barnsley opted against taking up a purchase option on Dike at the end of his four-month loan spell at Oakwell.

The Tykes were left with little choice but to walk away from a deal after missing out on promotion to the Premier League through the Championship play-offs.

It is reported that they could have landed Dyke for $20 million (£14m), but the funds are not there in South Yorkshire without top-flight football.

That is leaving the door open for others to make a move, but Dike has returned to Florida to link up with Orlando City in their 2021 MLS campaign - as they sit third in the Eastern Conference after seven games.

Man Utd & Chelsea-linked Haaland won't stay in 'comfort zone'

The Norwegian striker will not be rushing into any move, as he waits on the right opportunity, but he has big targets to chase down

Erling Haaland is being closely monitored by leading sides across Europe, with Chelsea and Manchester United among his many suitors, and the Norwegian striker admits that he will always look to leave any "comfort zone".

There is no indication that a spell at Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund has become that for the talented 20-year-old, with there still plenty for him to achive there after hitting 57 goals through 59 appearances.

He is prepared to wait for the right opportunity to come along, having carefully managed his career path to this point, but hope has been offered to those pursuing his signature in an admission that new challenges will always be sought.

What has been said?

Haaland has told Icon Magazine: "I have been taking a couple of steps over the past few years and I think they have been good steps for me, personally, to get out of my comfort zone and to develop even more.

"I want to challenge myself in everything that I do. It’s something I think about.

"It’s also for everyone to always do this. People can sometimes be too comfortable staying in their ‘zone’ so I think it’s important to get out of that."

He added: "I try to train as best I can and to deliver when I have to deliver and be prepared when I have to be prepared.

"That is how I feel about it. It’s what I try to do. But it’s also important not to get too stressed – to enjoy the game and to have fun. That’s the most important thing. I always try to have fun.

"My career has already been going very fast but also at a speed that I like.

"It’s true that I am young but I am setting myself goals all the time and I will do everything I can to achieve them."

What are those targets?

Haaland has already achieved plenty in a short period of time, with a meteoric rise to prominence taken in.

He has established a reputation as one of the most fearsome forwards in world football, while also becoming a senior international with 12 caps and seven goals for his country.

DFB-Pokal glory was taken in with Dortmund last season, landing Haaland a first piece of silverware in German football, but his ultimate goal is to chase down a European crown.

"That’s my big dream," he said.

"To win the Champions League one day. Hopefully I can lift that trophy and that really would be, well, amazing."

Gattuso quits as Fiorentina boss after 23 days in charge and with no games taken in

The 43-year-old World Cup winner has served ties with La Viola after just three weeks at the helm

Gennaro Gattuso has quit his role as manager of Fiorentina after just 23 days at the helm.

The 43-year-old World Cup winner was appointed to a new Serie A post on May 25, having severed ties with Napoli at the end of the 2020-21 campaign.

Little time was wasted in finding a new job, but a stint in Florence has lasted a little over three weeks and seen no games taken in by the former Italy international.

What has been said?

A statement on the club's official website reads: "ACF Fiorentina and Mister Rino Gattuso, by mutual agreement, have decided not to follow up on the previous agreements and therefore not to start the next football season together.

"The Company immediately set to work to identify a technical choice that will guide the Viola team towards the results that Fiorentina and the City of Florence deserve."

Why has Gattuso left?

Speculation regarding a stunning exit for Gattuso first emerged amid reports of disagreements between coach and board regarding recruitment policy.

Gattuso is said to have clashed with those above him when it comes to potential targets for the summer window.

Fiorentina are reportedly looking to favour a frugal approach, with value being sought in youthful additions that boast long-term promise.

Gattuso is said to have requested that more ready-made stars were drafted into his ranks.

Ultimately, in-house rifts could not be repaired and a parting of ways has now been put in place.

Who could Fiorentina turn to?

Early suggestions are that former Lyon boss Rudi Garcia is the favoured option for those at Stadio Artemio Franchi.

Ex-Chelsea and Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri is said to be another name in the frame, with the 69-year-old currently out of work after reaching the end of his contract at Sampdoria.

'If Grealish leaves Villa, I don't think it'll be to Man Utd' - Ferdinand doubts 'difficult' deal

The former Red Devils defender cannot see a role for another talented playmaker at Old Trafford with Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford around

Rio Ferdinand admits the presence of Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford at Manchester United makes it "difficult" to see Jack Grealish making a move to Old Trafford from Aston Villa.

Bruno Fernandes is another talismanic playmaker on the Red Devils' books, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer not short on options in the creativity department.

There have been suggestions that efforts will be made to further bolster those ranks, with Grealish a long-standing target for an ambitious Premier League heavyweight , but there is no obvious role for the 25-year-old England international in Manchester.

What has been said?

Asked by the UMM YouTube channel whether United should be in the market for Grealish, former Red Devils defender Ferdinand said: "All day long. All day long, man.

"I don't think Bruno Fernandes is the problem, you've got Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba that are both playing on the left and that's where Jack plays.

"His best position is on the left, and his next best position is No.10. They're the positions where our most influential players are right now. So I think it's difficult to see him at Manchester United right now.

"If he leaves Villa, I just don't think it'll be to Manchester United, unless they ship one or two of those boys away. I see it as a difficult deal to be done for Man United."

The bigger picture

For now, Grealish is looking to make his mark on a major international tournament with England.

He played no part in a Euro 2020 opener against Croatia, but could figure against Scotland on Friday and is one of those that Ferdinand is excited about seeing in action.

A man with 81 caps for the Three Lions to his name added: "I've already seen [Harry] Kane, Rashford, [Raheem] Sterling in a tournament.

"If I could see [Jude] Bellingham perform on this stage, if I could see [Phil] Foden perform on this stage, if I could see Grealish perform on this stage, if I could see [Jadon] Sancho. Mason Mount is another one. Those are the players that are exciting me.

"Give them a platform, give them the freedom to go and perform like they did for their clubs, and let them set this tournament on fire.

"Some of the best memories within our recent history of England have been Wayne Rooney, 18 years old in the Euros, Michael Owen at a World Cup in France at 18 years old.

"Unleashing these talents to go and create havoc and surprise many people around Europe has been amazing."
