Zesco United’s coach Mumamba lauds Were-Makwatta combination

Phunya Sele Sele have reinforced their squad with four new players including a former AmaZulu FC player

Bloemfontein Celtic have officially unveiled four new signings ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

Menzi Ndwandwe, Gerhard Phafoli, Robert Smith and Mokone Mereko have all been confirmed as Siwelele players.

The Free State giants are preparing for the new season which will see them compete in four major competitions including the Caf Confederation Cup.

The club released the following statement on Thursday afternoon.

"Bloemfontein Celtic would like to welcome the following players to the team."

"1. Menzi Ndwandwe, 2. Robert Smith, 3. Mokone Mereko 4. Gerhard Phafoli," a club statement read.

Phafoli is a former Kaizer Chiefs academy player and he was part of the Soweto giants' reserve team during the recent 2019/20 season.

The young goalkeeper was named among Chiefs' substitutes as the club's first team was defeated by Celtic in the 2019 Macufe Cup.

Meanwhile, Ndwandwe, who is a striker by trade, was on the books of National First Division (NFD) outfit Uthongathi in the recent campaign.

The former AmaZulu FC player hit the back of the net 11 times from 27 league matches for Uthongathi and he has since been snapped up by Phunya Sele Sele.

On the other hand, defender Mokone Mereko was previously with Highlands Park, who recently sold their PSL status to TS Galaxy.

While Smith is very much an unknown quantity and he will be keen to make a name for himself in the new season.

Celtic will be under the guidance of coach John Maduka, who led the team to an eighth spot finish in the league and Nedbank Cup final in the recent campaign.

Siwelele are set to start the new term with the 2020 MTN8 quarter-final clash against Mamelodi Sundowns on October 18.

I-League 2020 Qualifiers: Bhawanipore, Mohammedan Sporting begin with a win

Bhawanipore and Mohammedan start their journey this season with 2-0 and 1-0 wins respectively…

A new season of Indian football kicked-off with the I-League 2020 qualifiers on Thursday in West Bengal.

Local clubs Bhawanipore and Mohammedan Sporting were in action on the first day as against Bengaluru United and Garhwal respectively.

Both clubs were off to a flying start. In the first match of the day at the Salt Lake stadium, Sankarlal Chakraborty’s Bhawanipore eased past Bengaluru FC 2-0 to start their campaign on a high.

At the stroke of half time, Pankaj Moula (45+4’) handed Bhawanipore the lead. Philippe Adjah entered the Bengaluru box to get to a through ball from Altamash Sayed and attempted a shot at goal but Bengaluru custodian Srijith R. parried the ball away. Moula converted the rebound with a simple tap-in.

The home team scored the second goal in the 60th minute to seal the fate of the match with a brilliant strike from Adjah. The Ghanian forward, from a quick counter-attack, executed a stunning finish from the edge of the box.

In the second game in Kalyani, Mohammedan Sporting edged out Garhwal 1-0 courtesy of a wonder goal by Timothy Munmun Lugun in the added time.

The Black Panthers, who are one of the favourites to earn a promotion, were wasteful throughout the game and were very close to dropping points in their season opener.

Star striker Willis Plaza failed to convert a penalty in the 65th minute after Gani Nigam was brought down inside the Garhwal box. Plaza’s shot hit the upright and went out.

Plaza once again failed to convert an easy chance minutes after his earlier miss when his header from point blank range it the crossbar.

Just when it looked like Mohammedan Sporting would lose points against the Delhi-based club, Munmun Lugun scored a 25-yard stunner.

Mohammedan’s next match is against ARA FC on October 11 and Garhwal face Bengaluru United on the same day. Sankarlal Chakraborty’s men face Garhwal in their second game on October 14.

'It's a dream for me to play for Real Madrid one day' - Pogba discusses Bernabeu ambition & contract situation at Man Utd

The Frenchman has sparked fresh doubt over his future at Old Trafford while away on international duty with his country

Paul Pogba has admitted that it is a "dream" for him to play for Real Madrid one day, while clarifying his current contract situation at Manchester United.

Pogba's future has been the subject of much speculation in recent years, amid persistent questions over his form and fitness at Old Trafford.

United forked out £89 million ($115m) to re-sign the midfielder from Juventus in 2016, but he has since struggled to live up to that price tag.

The 27-year-old has often been made a scapegoat following defeats or poor team performances, and he appeared to have reached a breaking point at the end of the 2018-19 campaign.

Pogba openly admitted to being ready for a new challenge away from Manchester in the summer of 2019, with Madrid mooted as a possible next destination, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ultimately managed to convince him to stay put for another year.

A serious ankle injury significantly limited the Frenchman's contribution last term, and it wasn't until football returned after lockdown in June that he rediscovered his best form.

The World Cup winner ended up playing a key role in United's run to a third-place finish in the top flight, but has found himself under intense scrutiny once again at the start of the new campaign.

The Red Devils have only picked up three points from a possible nine in the Premier League, with the international break coming as a welcome reprieve for Pogba amid mounting criticism.

It has been reported that Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane remains a keen admirer of the playmaker, and he opened the door to a potential transfer at a press conference following France's 7-1 friendly win over Ukraine in midweek.

Quizzed on his fellow countryman's rumoured interest in him, Pogba told reporters on Thursday: "We have all heard that things have been said. What to say? Yes, all footballers would love to play for Real Madrid. It might be a dream.

"It is a dream for me, why not one day? But I play for Manchester United and I love my club. I perform for Manchester United, I have fun and I want to do everything to put the club where it deserves to be .

"I will give my maximum, like my team-mates."

Pogba, who has just entered the final year of his existing contract at Old Trafford, went on to reveal that he has yet to be offered a renewal, although United do hold the option to extend the deal by 12 months.

"I have not spoken with Ed Woodward (executive vice-chairman of Manchester United)," he said. "We did not talk about a renewal. For now, I am in Manchester and I mainly think about getting back to the best of my form.

"I think there will be a moment when the club will come and talk to me and maybe offer me something, or not. So far, nothing has happened. I can't tell you something that I don't know."

United suffered a humiliating 6-1 loss at home to Tottenham on Sunday, which increased the pressure on Solskjaer as he bids to bring the club's three-year trophy drought to an end.

Pogba says the whole squad are still pulling in the same direction despite another damaging setback, as he added: "We know it's not easy, we've had difficult times. It's difficult at the moment.

"We are fighting, that's what it takes. We know that we will go through low times as a footballer.

"You have to have a strong mental strength to come back to the best level and to find the place which suits us to put the club where it deserves to be. It deserves to be at the top.

"To win titles and the championship, these are the ambitions of the club. We know that it is not easy, but that remains our objective. We are fighting for that."

Arteta: Partey will make Arsenal more balanced and versatile

The Gunners boss hopes the £45 million ($58m) signing will strengthen his side's attack as well as their defence

Mikel Arteta is confident new signing Thomas Partey will help make Arsenal more adaptable and believes he can add to both the defensive and attacking sides of their game.

The Gunners signed the midfielder from Atletico Madrid in a deal worth £45 million ($58m) on the final day of the transfer window.

Partey, 27, had been on the north London side's list of targets for several months, technical director Edu revealed on Thursday, and first-team manager Arteta says he knows what the Ghana international can add to the team after watching him for so long.

The Spaniard is looking to set his side up in different formations and feels Partey's arrival opens up the possibility to try new things.

Arteta said in an interview with the club's website: "We identified him a few months ago and we have been following his progress, and obviously the more you know about the squad, you know more about where you think you can improve it.

"We believe he has the right qualities, with his character and his personality and as well with his technical qualities and positional options that he can give to the team.

"I think he allows us to play different formations and he can fit in within those formations in different positions, which is a really good thing to have in a squad where, in midfield, I think we were a little bit short.

"I have a few things in mind that I want to start to train with the team and [Partey's signing] is going to give us a little bit more adaptability and more balance in defending and attacking transitions and the way we have to set up certain structures to attack better in certain moments of the game."

Partey, who joined Atletico as a teenager, made his debut for Diego Simeone's team in November 2015 and featured in their run to the Champions League final that season.

He played a key role as the Spanish side won the Europa League and UEFA Super Cup in 2018, making 188 appearances in all competitions over his five years in the first-team.

Former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder Song builds international school in Cameroon

The 33-year-old midfielder has made a move to better the lives of the younger generation in his country

Former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder Alexandre Song has completed the construction of an international school in the economic capital of Cameroon, Douala.

The institution named Canadian International School and College boasts of a day care, nursery, primary and secondary school.

The ex-Cameroon international revealed on his social media platform on Thursday that it is an important project for him to make Cameroon better.

“I am delighted to have finished this project which was so close to my heart to make my small share of contribution in our beautiful and dear country I present to you Canadian school,” Song wrote on Instagram.

Aside his new investment in education, the 33-year-old owns an established business in the fashion industry named ‘Systeme Tchakap’.

Song is currently without a club after he was released alongside eight other players by Swiss top-flight club Sion in March because they refused to take a pay cut following the outbreak of coronavirus.

A few months ago, the former West Ham United and Arsenal midfielder said he joined Barcelona from the Premier League because he wanted to be a millionaire.

"When FC Barcelona offered me a contract and I saw how much I would earn, I didn't think twice about it," Song told professional basketball player and fellow countryman Pascal Siakam of the Toronto Raptors in an Instagram Live session.

"I thought my wife and children should have a comfortable life. I met the sporting director and he said I wouldn't play many games, but I didn't give a sh*t. I knew I was going to be a millionaire."

SAFF Championship 2021: How can India qualify for the finals?

The 27-year-old talks about the team spirit ahead of the upcoming double-header of games

New Arsenal signing Thomas Partey has been impressed by the intense competition for a starting place in Ghana's camp ahead of the upcoming friendlies against Mali and Qatar.

Following his transfer to Premier League club Arsenal from Atletico Madrid on Monday, the 27-year-old joined the Black Stars team in Turkey on Tuesday, before training with the national team for the first time on Wednesday.

Ghana are set to take on continental counterparts Mali on Friday, three days to a meeting with 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar on Monday.

"I feel good, I am so happy to be here again with the Black Stars," as reported by the Ghana Football Association's official website.

"About the guys, I think they are doing well, today I can see everyone is trying to do their best, trying to win the heart of the new coach and I think it’s good, we have a great competition and I think it’s better for the Black Stars.

"Today is not the first day of working with him [coach], you know we already played with him and I think he is doing all he can so that we will be comfortable and you know we won our last game and we will see what will happen against Mali and Qatar."

Ghana's squad in Turkey has been boosted by the likes of France-born Strasbourg defender Alexander Djiku, England-born Brentford winger Tariqe Fosu, Nordsjaelland prodigy Kamaldeen Sulemana and Amiens midfielder Emmanuel Lomotey, who have all been invited for the first time.

Friday's match is set to test Ghana's preparations for the resumption of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers in November.

"We are having good competition in the team; all the guys are training well.

"I think this will help the team to improve, everyone will be on their feet trying to win the heart of the coach and also give more pressure on those that think that they are comfortable, it will energise them to be on their toes to fight to maintain their place in the team.

"I am very happy; we have a lot of quality players in the team. There are so many Ghanaian players out there who are good but not all of us can be here. Fortunately, we are here because we won the heart of the coach. And I think it’s a good place to show what we have.

"We have to do our best, make sure we win all our matches like we did previously against South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe and with this we will win back the hearts of many Ghanaians also."

On his last time with the national team, Partey was on target as Ghana beat South Africa 2-0 in the Afcon qualifiers in November 2019.

Stefan Bajcetic: Things to know

The winger has been linked with a return to Camp Nou, but he has insisted he is only focused on improving his game with Wolves

Wolves winger Adama Traore has insisted he is not thinking about a potential return to former club Barcelona despite holding regular talks about the club with Camp Nou prodigy Ansu Fati.

Traore emerged through Barca's famed academy ranks but failed to make the first-team grade and is now excelling at Molineux, scoring seven times in 95 appearances in all competitions, after spells with Aston Villa and Middlesbrough

The 24-year-old continued his upward rise by winning his first cap for Spain in Wednesday's stalemate with Portugal, earning praise from boss Luis Enrique after the friendly.

He has been linked with a return to Barcelona in the past but, despite still having close ties to the club, the speedy wide man is only focused on improving his game at Wolves.

"It's not my decision whether I would suit Barcelona. My mentality is to work every day to be better," Traore said at a news conference previewing Saturday's Nations League clash with Switzerland.

Asked about his close friendship with Fati, who set yet another record last month by becoming La Roja's youngest ever goalscorer , Traore revealed no topic is off-limits between the pair.

"We talk about everything," he said. "Even some more general topics because I have been at the club for many years and so has he.

"We met in the academy and have spoken about things to do with the team, the things that we happened together at Barcelona. We know each other well."

Luis Enrique talked up Traore's incredible physique on the back of the goalless draw in Lisbon, but the Wolves man has reiterated weight lifting is not part of his training programme.

"I don't do weights because my genetics make me gain a lot of muscle. I just do work to be in the best condition," he said before thanking the Spain boss for giving him a chance with the national team.

"He asked me to do my best, to do my bit to win matches. I can only thank him for his trust, [and that of] his staff, the doctors. For his insistence that I come."

Chelsea's Champions League away leg with Porto set to take place at neutral ground

Kenya will host Chipolopolo as both sides prepare for their upcoming international matches in November

Harambee Stars head coach Francis Kimanzi believes the short time for training has been sufficient ahead of the friendly match against Zambia.

Kenya only had three days of training after the government granted them late permission to congregate at the Moi International Sports Complex, Kasarani where they would remain until Friday morning.

“The training we have had in camp I believe is sufficient for the friendly match tomorrow despite the short period of time and the delays caused by Covid-19 restrictions,” Kimanzi told reporters after overseeing Thursday’s training session.

Zesco United goalkeeper Ian Otieno echoed Kimanzi’s sentiments claiming the team is ready although he acknowledged the time was far from being enough.

“I believe the team is capable of delivering a positive result despite training for a very short period of time,” the former AFC Leopards goalkeeper said.

Zambia, who played and defeated Malawi on Wednesday, are expected to touch down on Thursday evening. They will be hosted at Nyayo Stadium for the match that will start at 16:00 EAT.

Clarke Oduor and Joseph Okumu were the latest players to join the national team which draws the majority of its players from the Kenyan Premier League. The Zambia friendly was organised by the Football Kenya Federation in order to help gauge the players’ fitness ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) clash against Comoros in mid-November.

The last time Harambee Stars were engaged was during an Afcon qualifier against Togo in Nairobi where they drew 1-1 almost one year ago.

Final Squad:

Goalkeepers: Ian Otieno (Zesco United, Zambia), Timothy Odhiambo (Ulinzi Stars, Kenya)

Defenders: Brian Mandela (Unattached), Johnstone Omurwa (Wazito, Kenya), Joash Onyango (Simba, Tanzania), Joseph Okumu (Elfsborg, Sweden), Clarke Oduor (Barnsley, England), David Owino (Mathare United, Kenya), Philemon Otieno (Gor Mahia, Kenya), Badi Baraka (KCB, Kenya)

Midfielders: Kenneth Muguna (Gor Mahia, Kenya), Francis Kahata (Simba, Tanzania), Eric Johanna (Jonkoping’s Sodra IF, Sweden), Cliff Nyakeya (Masr FC, Egypt), Antony Akumu (Kaiser Chief, South Africa), Hassan Abdallah (Bandari FC, Kenya), Lawrence Juma (Gor Mahia, Kenya), Katana Mohamed (Isloch, Belarus), Austin Otieno (AFC Leopards, Kenya)

Forwards: Elvis Rupia (AFC Leopards, Kenya), Masud Juma (JS Kabylie, Algeria), Timothy Otieno (NAPSA Stars, Zambia), Oscar Wamalwa (Ulinzi Stars, Kenya).

Hirving 'Chucky' Lozano continues to draw interest from non-European sides

A former Camp Nou favourite has challenged the Frenchman to "take responsibility" and become an "important member" of Ronald Koeman's squad

Ousmane Dembele needs to prove that he wants to play for Barcelona, according to Rivaldo, who says the Manchester United-linked winger has yet to justify his €105 million (£95m/$123m) price tag.

Barca paid big-money to bring an emerging talent to Camp Nou from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2017, after seeing talismanic winger Neymar complete a world-record move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Dembele was expected to fill the Brazilian's boots in the final third alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, but was ultimately unable to hit the ground running at the start of his career in Catalonia.

The Frenchman only managed to score four goals in 24 outings for the Blaugrana in his debut season, and has since dealt with a string of serious injuries which have prevented him from fulfilling his full potential.

The 23-year-old missed the majority of the 2019-20 campaign due to a hamstring issue, with Antoine Griezmann taking his spot in the Barca squad following his €120m (£109m/$141m) switch from Atletico Madrid last year.

Dembele has also been disciplined for missing training sessions during his time at Camp Nou, leading to questions over his commitment to the club's cause.

He returned to full fitness in time for the beginning of Barca's latest campaign, but still has plenty of work to do in order to earn a regular place in Ronald Koeman's squad.

Premier League giants United tried to bring Dembele in on loan before Monday's transfer deadline, and Koeman opened the door to his exit by insisting any potential deal was between the "club and the player".

However, Barca were only willing to sanction the ex-Dortmund starlet's departure on a permanent basis, and he is now destined to stay put for at least another three months, with the Red Devils being tipped to revive their interest in January.

Rivaldo has challenged Dembele to knuckle down and become a key part of Koeman's plans after the failed move to United, with it his belief that the talented attacker is capable of having a big impact if he "takes responsibility" on and off the pitch.

"Ousmane Dembele rejected a move in the transfer window. That wouldn't be a problem if he were playing regularly but that's not the case as he continues to get injured or miss training schedules and that's not good," the ex-Barca forward told Betfair.

"He is an excellent player but he needs to prove that wants to play and take responsibility. The club paid a lot for him and they aren't seeing any return from that yet. Let's see if he can show the commitment that he'll need to become an important member of Koeman's squad."

Barca supporters will certainly hope that Dembele can finally step up to the plate after seeing Suarez complete a €6 million (£5.5m/$7m) transfer to Atletico last month, which left Koeman short on options in the final third of the pitch.

Rivaldo thinks his old club should have done more to bring in someone capable of filling the void left by the Uruguayan, as he added: "Barcelona should have tried harder to sign a new striker to replace Luís Suarez. We will miss him, especially in decisive matches in the Champions League and also in La Liga against Real Madrid, Atletico or Sevilla.

"Off the field, it looks like we could have elections at the club very soon and that's not good for a team that needs stability. On the other hand, it's important to sort out the situation so that the club can move on.

"Fortunately, the team has made a decent start to the season and seems to be improving under Ronald Koeman. But of course, there remain unsolved problems from previous seasons."

7 Corinthians fans killed in bus crash in Brazil

The Besiktas midfielder looks ahead to the October 9 and 12 friendly clashes against Mali and Qatar respectively

Ghana midfielder Bernard Mensah believes the squad has been boosted by the arrival of new Arsenal signing Thomas Teye Partey ahead of the upcoming international friendly matches against Mali and Qatar.

Partey linked up with the Black Stars squad on Tuesday evening and trained with the team for the first time on Wednesday, two days after sealing a much-talked-about move from Atletico Madrid on Transfer Deadline Day.

Ghana take on Mali on Friday and face Qatar on Monday, both games in preparation for the resumption of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers in November.

"We want to win every game; we are the Black Stars. We have good players, Jordan Ayew, Andre and Thomas [Partey]. I think we have a very good squad and we want to win every game," Mensah told the Ghana Football Association's official website.

"The two games are very important for us, the new players also want to prove something in these two games, so yes, we are ready and we want to win every game.

"I think since I came here, I think everything is going on well and yesterday’s training too was tight like today.

"But today is much better because all the experienced players [including Partey and the Ayews] are here so today was really different from yesterday and the feeling too was great."

Mensah makes a return to national duty for the first time since linking up with the squad for a 2015 friendly against Canada.

His fine form for Kayserispor in the Turkish league last season and his early showing for new club Besiktas did enough to convince new Ghana coach CK Akonnor who assumed duty earlier this year.

"I think the invitation means a lot to me," Mensah said.

"We now have a new coach, he is CK Akonnor. He saw what I did with my previous clubs, Kasimpasa, Kayserispor and now Besiktas, so I will say it’s a big chance for me.

"He knows the type of player I am, and that is why he gave me the opportunity to be here.

"Apart from Avram Grant, he is the coach who shows you how he wants you to play on the field and this a very big difference.

"Because he is telling you what to do and how he wants you to play, so I think after Avram Grant, working with him is great for me, being here today to see what he is doing is perfect and great for me."

Mensah will be hoping for a second successive call-up when Akonnor names his Ghana squad for November's Afcon qualifying double-header against Sudan.

Azam FC 2-2 Namungo FC: Ice-cream Makers drop points again

The Welshman's representative is certain he will have a big impact on Jose Mourinho's squad upon his return to full fitness

Gareth Bale will help Tottenham get very close to the Premier League title, according to his agent, who insists that the Real Madrid loanee is still one of the best players in the world.

Bale returned to Spurs on a season-long loan on September 18, having spent the last seven years of his career at Santiago Bernabeu.

The Welshman has had great success in the Spanish capital since joining the Blancos for a then-world record fee of £85 million ($110m) in 2013, but no longer enjoys the full confidence of head coach Zinedine Zidane.

Bale has picked up four Champions League trophies and two La Liga titles during his time with Madrid, but only played a bit-part role in their run to domestic glory in 2019-20, having failed to secure a move away from the club last summer.

The 31-year-old winger has now been given the chance to re-ignite his career after making his way back to Tottenham, and will be expected to slot straight into Jose Mourinho's starting XI as soon as he gets back up to speed on the training ground.

Jonathan Barnett, who serves as Bale's main legal representative, is confident that the experienced winger will rediscover his best form at Spurs, who he believes are well placed to launch a serious bid for English football's top prize.

Asked to outline the Wales international's ambitions during his second stint in north London, Barnett told Sky Sports: "Win the Premier League, without a doubt.

"Tottenham have got a good squad, a great coach and with Gareth's help I'm sure they will get very close. You only have to see the results from last week to see that it's open.

"It kills me to say that because I'm an Arsenal supporter, but that's the reality.

"He has nothing to prove to anybody. He's won more than anybody else. He was one of the best three or four players in the world and I think he still is.

"If he succeeds, great, If not, he's been there and done it. But, I think he will succeed."

Barnett says Bale's decision to rejoin Tottenham was motivated by his love for the club rather than financial gain, and that it was definitely the right time for him to part ways with Madrid.

"He loves it [at Tottenham]. The most important thing is he has got a smile back on his face and that he's enjoying life," the super-agent added.

"It had to be somewhere he wanted to go. For him, it wasn't about money. If he was going to go somewhere it was going to be somewhere that he'd enjoy.

"He's had offers and it wasn't right for him. When Tottenham came knocking, it was right.

"He's had a hard time and now he's going to enjoy himself. He deserves to be happy. He's been probably one of Britain's best ambassadors.

"He wasn't going anywhere with Real Madrid. We'd got to an impasse and some silly things were happening on both sides."

James challenged to ‘step up’ with no Sancho at Man Utd as Giggs sees positives for Wales winger

The Red Devils legend believes a lack of reinforcements on the flanks at Old Trafford can work in favour of one of his international stars

Ryan Giggs is looking for Daniel James to “step up” at Manchester United now that he no longer has the threat of added competition from Jadon Sancho hanging over his head.

For much of the summer transfer window it appeared as though the Red Devils would be adding to their stock of attacking wide men.

England international Sancho was identified as a top target, but those at Old Trafford were unable to put a deal with Borussia Dortmund in place.

Inability to reach an agreement there has helped to keep James in his current surroundings, with reports of loan interest fended off as deadline day approached.

The 22-year-old now has the chance to prove his worth all over again under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with Wales boss and United legend Giggs confident the jet-heeled youngster can prosper.

He said when challenging James to deliver for club and country: “Another winger coming in would mean maybe less games. That’s up to DJ to step up when he does get the chance.”

James impressed for Wales in Nations League wins over Finland and Bulgaria in September and, despite seeing only 45 minutes of club football this season, Giggs believes he can help to shoulder a weight of expectation when the likes of Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey are unavailable.

He added: “DJ was excellent in both the last games. He made the goal in the first and was brilliant for us. He had not played a lot but looked sharp.

“Dan has friends here. He always enjoys coming away, the training, the atmosphere, playing for the country.

“If Gareth and Aaron are here or not, he’s still a threat. He has got speed that always keeps the opposition interested.

“He has that directness as he showed in our last games. If he has not been playing it gives him the opportunity to get minutes.

“No matter what team goes to Wembley and wins it’s a huge achievement.

“I have happy memories at both the old and new Wembley. Hopefully there’s another coming.”

Wales are set to take in a friendly date with England on Thursday, with James in contention after missing United’s 6-1 defeat to Tottenham through illness.

Giggs said: “He had a bit of a bug. He played against Brighton in midweek, felt something before the game and afterwards it wiped him out.

“He also had a knock on his foot so we are monitoring that. There are a couple of players in the same boat.

“We are giving them as much time as we can then deciding on the team.”

Transfer Talk: Bayern still keen on Kane despite new Choupo-Moting deal

Friday's meeting with Algeria may only be a friendly, but it raises new and peculiar challenges for the Super Eagles - and Gernot Rohr - to master

On Friday, the Nigeria national team will take to the pitch for the first time in 2020 – and indeed in 11 months – in a high-profile friendly against Algeria.

For fans of the Super Eagles, the long absence has only made hearts grow fonder.

Nigeria’s last outing came in faraway Lesotho, when a thoroughly engrossing Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the southern African side yielded six goals, featured a swift comeback and an own-goal for good measure. The 4-2 victory showcased the very best of Gernot Rohr’s new-look Super Eagles: near irresistible in attack, tough enough to assert themselves even on an unforgiving playing surface, and capable of necessary adaptation to the opposition’s particular challenge.

It was a performance (and outcome) that kept the three-time African champions perfect in the hunt for a place at the 2021 Afcon, coming as it did on the heels of a 2-1 home win over Benin a few days prior. It also momentarily muffled a number of doubts over Rohr’s aptitude for the next phase of his national team rebuild.

The ensuing hiatus has brought rather more pertinent concerns to the fore, of course. Public health and safety in the midst of a global pandemic, for instance, and while the wisdom of playing international fixtures at such a time remains the subject of much debate, its return does seem to signpost a return to something approximating normalcy.

That said, a return to a putative status quo also brings with it a stirring of the dissent that, through inertia, had settled at the bottom; not to mention the fresh set of challenges it presents.

Let us begin with the latter then.

Fifa’s most recent world rankings (as of September 17) saw Nigeria enter the top 30 for the first time since 2009, remarkably rising despite playing no matches. That announcement has sheared the local footballing community in two; while one side has assumed a historical perspective, stating it is nothing to fete on account of higher placements in the past, the other has taken a more pragmatic view, choosing to focus on the rise as a function of Rohr’s work over the last four years.

The latter view has popularized the use of the #ThankYouGernotRohr movement on social media, but whatever side of the debate one comes down on, one thing is clear: the stakes have clearly been raised.

A place in Fifa’s top 30 comes with a couple of advantages, not least of all a relaxing of the rules around work permit applications in England where Nigerian footballers are concerned – now, only 60% of national team matches over a two-year period are needed to qualify, as opposed to 75% previously.

Considering that, as recently as 2017, this proved a stumbling block for even a seasoned international like Ogenyi Onazi, who saw a deal to join Birmingham City fall through at the last minute, the ascent can only be construed as a positive.

So, while it gives some validation to Rohr(’s work), it also places added pressure on the German to, at the very least, maintain that high standing; not only to prove it’s no fluke, but in the knowledge that the futures of Nigerian footballers everywhere – not just those who have earned caps – may directly depend on it.

As does the increased goodwill he now enjoys.

Those doubts over his ability to coach a team to play on the front foot and maximize its potential may have been assuaged by the results of late 2019, but they never went away entirely.

It is to his credit somewhat that he appeared to rise to the challenge following the disappointment of Afcon semi-final elimination, refreshing the team in key areas and quickening the play to exploit the pace of the likes of Samuel Chukwueze and Victor Osimhen.

This change of emphasis fed directly into the aforementioned victories over Benin and Lesotho, but also highly creditable draws against Ukraine and Brazil.

Rohr will no doubt rue the loss of that momentum, but there is little time to bemoan it. His very first assignment back sees him come up against Algeria, the last side against whom he suffered defeat.

It was against Djamel Belmadi’s side that concerns over his timidity in the face of adversity came to a head at the Afcon, and to this day his sin of inaction has yet to be expiated.

It may very well be a friendly, and Rohr may be able to point to the absence of a number of key personnel – Wilfred Ndidi and Joe Aribo, for example, constitute two-thirds of his first-choice selection in midfield, the very zone in which the Super Eagles were so utterly overrun by Les Fennecs.

Nevertheless, his decisions (or lack thereof) will be scrutinized, pored over for signs he has truly overcome his tremulousness. He, most of all, has it all to prove on Friday.

Assessing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer After 100 Games in Charge of Man Utd

The Brazilian midfielder has impressed since leaving the Etihad Stadium and may yet be lured back to the north west from the West Midlands

Douglas Luiz claims to have had little contact with Manchester City regarding a potential return to the Etihad Stadium from Aston Villa.

The Brazilian midfielder arrived in English football during the summer of 2017.

Work permit issues prevented him from making an impact in Manchester, with loan spells at Girona offering him an opportunity to catch the eye in Europe.

Once finally cleared to open a new chapter in the Premier League, Luiz was offloaded to Villa in a £15 million ($19m) transfer.

He impressed many in 2019-20 while helping Dean Smith’s side to fend off the threat of relegation, sparking talk of City taking advantage of a buy-back clause in his contract.

Luiz is aware of the rumours, but claims to be paying little attention to them as nobody in Manchester has offered him any indication that another move could be on the cards.

He told Globo Esporte when quizzed on the transfer talk: “About Man City, I've been doing my job at Villa, I don't really have conversations with City or [Pep] Guardiola.

“But it's a job that went together, I had help from City with Villa to be able to play in the Premier League.

“It's a very good thing to be able to play there without any difficulty.”

Luiz admits that it took him a while to settle at Villa after seeing a move pushed through in 2019, but he soon found his feet and has seen the West Midlands outfit kick on this season – with their last outing seeing them inflict a stunning 7-2 defeat on defending champions Liverpool.

“Explaining a little about my evolution, as soon as I arrived at Aston Villa it was two days before the Premier League started,” Luiz added.

“It hindered me a little by not living with the players. After the break, I had time to do the training, get physically fit. It was the real change, to have known the players more and more.

“We’ve been doing a very good job, we have had time to work. It is a very different season than the one in which we fought not to be relegated. This has strengthened us so that we can do our best this season.

“We had signings that were essential, that adjusted the team, the coach has been doing a great job and we were able to beat the current champions. We want to continue doing our job to stay in the Premier League and aim for something bigger.”
