LA Galaxy 4-1 Austin FC: Player ratings as Chicharito, Joveljić and Alvarez led the team to glory

The veteran forward has apparently mended broken bridges at the Bernabeu, but Fabio Paratici does not expect him to leave

Juventus director Fabio Paratici moved to confirm Cristiano Ronaldo's future at the club despite recent links to a sensational Real Madrid return.

Ronaldo, 35, left Madrid in the summer of 2018 following nine trophy-laden seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu for a new challenge in Serie A

The striker has gone on to win back-to-back Scudetti in his two seasons to date, scoring 71 goals in 94 games in all competitions.

Juve's failure to repeat their domestic success in Europe despite the presence of the Champions League talisman, however, has caused some unrest in Turin, with neither Massimiliano Allegri nor successor Maurizio Sarri able to break the club's run of 25 years without success in the competition so far.

Media reports from Italy suggest that Ronaldo, additionally frustrated by Juve's efforts to cut players' salaries to offset financial losses caused by the coronavirus pandemic, has made efforts to smooth relations with Madrid president Florentino Perez, leaving the door open to a possible comeback in the future.

Paris Saint-Germain are also mentioned as a potential destination for the striker, who started Juve's Serie A clash on Saturday at home to Cagliari

Paratici though insists that in spite of those stories, Ronaldo is going nowhere.

“I can reassure you about Cristiano Ronaldo’s future here at Juventus," the director explained to DAZN.

"We don't pay too much attention to transfers rumours, there is lots of news every day.”

Paulo Dybala is another players whose future in Turin has come under the microscope as the Argentine has struggled for playing time in 2020-21.

He was once again consigned to the bench on Saturday after missing out on Argentina's World Cup qualifiers through illness, but Paratici expects him to get back to his best soon.

“Dybala is a great player and wants to be a protagonist. He’s unlucky, as he had this virus issue that has been dragging on since the last break for international duty, he had more problems just before the Lazio game," he added.

“He has now been able to train regularly and hopefully will soon get back to being the Dybala of old.”

Lukaku's last-gasp goal sets up Milan derby QF

The Blues slipped to a 2-0 defeat against Tottenham in their latest outing and have just 12 points to their name after eight Premier League games

Manchester City have made their worst start to a Premier League season since 2008-09, with the club sacking Mark Hughes in the December of that campaign to make way for Roberto Mancini’s arrival.

Expectations were high at the Etihad Stadium 12 years ago, with Sheikh Mansour having taken control of the club in September of that year.

His billions were immediately put to good use, with a stunning transfer deal completed for Brazil international forward Robinho.

Hughes, a Manchester United legend from his playing days, was the man charged with the task of generating positive results.

He failed to deliver on that remit and paid the price with his job before the halfway stage of the season was reached.

A slow start did his cause few favours, with just 10 points collected from City’s opening eight games.

Man City have become a trophy-winning machine since that point, with Mancini delivering the first of four Premier League titles for the club in 2011-12.

Current boss Pep Guardiola has captured two of those crowns, and has recently been handed a new contract through to 2023, but his ambitious outfit are finding the going tough at present.

A 2-0 defeat at Tottenham on Saturday means City have taken only 12 points from the 24 on offer so far – their worst return since Hughes’ ill-fated tenure.

Scoring goals has become something of a problem for Guardiola’s side, which is surprising given the abundance of attacking talent at their disposal.

The team has found the target just 10 times through eight top-flight fixtures, with that tally representing a 14-year low – since they mustered only six by the same stage in 2006-07.

City’s struggles in the final third are not for a lack of trying – certainly against Tottenham.

They drew a blank on Saturday despite peppering Hugo Lloris’ goal with 22 attempts.

They fired in 19 on their last visit to Tottenham, when they also lost 2-0 back in February, while Spurs have shown how it should be done by converting both of their shots on target in the latest heavyweight duel between two title hopefuls.

It is a case of back to drawing board for Guardiola – who had already been enduring the worst start to a season of his glittering coaching career – and City, who sit 10th in the table, will be hoping to find a spark when they face Olympiakos in the Champions League on Wednesday and Burnley in the Premier League next weekend.

ISL 2021-22: Kolkata derby and the games to look forward to in November

The French midfielder was left out following a busy period with his national team over the November international break

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed why Paul Pogba was left out of Saturday's meeting with West Brom, with the midfielder set to miss out on the first club match since returning from his time with his national team.

Pogba was left out of Solskjaer's matchday squad for Saturday's clash, the first following the conclusion of a busy international break with France.

The midfielder started and played 90 minutes in two of France's three matches during the break, going 57 minutes in the third before being taken out in favour of N'Golo Kante.

During that break, France boss Didier Deschamps was full of praise for Pogba’s "pride and talent", adding that he hopes his performances for France will help him win back his place in the Man Utd team.

Deschamps also added that he believes Pogba is being hurt psychologically by his situation at the club, while Solskjaer responded by saying that Pogba is not being played out of position and is just in need of a bit of rhythm.

On Saturday, though, Solskjaer said that Pogba's absence had nothing to do with his form nor comments made during the international break.

Instead, Pogba's exclusion is due to a knock, one that also leaves him in doubt for Tuesday's Champions League clash with Istanbul Basaksahir.

"Paul's got a knock in the last game and he started feeling it yesterday before the session but he couldn't carry on," Solskjaer told MUTV. "Hopefully he'll be ok for Tuesday. We still don't know."

Pogba has started seven times in the Premier League this season, having also appeared in all three of Man Utd's Champions League games.

Among the substitutes on Saturday is Scott McTominay, who was named to the bench after a busy week with Scotland with matches in Serbia, Slovakia and Israel.

"We can’t have any excuses because if you look at the XI that is starting, it’s more or less the same as the Everton one [except] Luke [Shaw] is injured and Nemanja [Matic] is in for Scott," Solskjaer said.

"Scott has been all over the world – Serbia, Slovakia, Israel… so that was the sensible thing to do with Scott. We should have energy as well because most of our players played on Tuesday. Harry [Maguire] played on Wednesday so we should be okay."

Entering Saturday, the Red Devils sit 14th in the Premier League, having struggled to capture points at home at Old Trafford.

Man Utd do sit atop their Champions League group, however, having taken down Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig before falling to Basksahir in their most recent European match.

After their midweek clash with the Turkish side on Tuesday, Man Utd will travel to face Southampton before a much-anticipated clash with PSG at Old Trafford.

LIVE: Chelsea vs Burnley

The Nigerian-born Spanish youth international netted the opening goal of her side's victory over Pozuelo Alarcon on Saturday

Mabel Okoye scored her first goal in the 2020-21 Spanish Reto Iberdrola season as Madrid II beat Pozuelo Alarcon 2-0 at Matapinonera on Saturday.

Going into the tie, Madrid had failed to record a win in their last two matches following a 2-0 defeat at Racing Santander before a 1-1 draw with her city rivals Atletico Madrid II in the last outing.

The Nigerian-born Spanish youth international, who scored four goals during the preseason provided the opener to inspire her team's second victory of the season against their visitors.

In search of the first win, Madrid created numerous chances but could not convert as they were forced to a stalemate at half time.

After the restart, Okoye broke the deadlock, with her first league goal of the season for her side in the 63rd minute of the encounter.

10 minutes from time, Julia Hernandez got on the scoresheet with a second of the contest to guarantee their second win of the season.

Despite being born in Madrid, Okoye is eligible to feature for Nigeria at the U20 and senior level, through her father who is a Nigerian.

The 19-year-old, who joined Madrid from Tacon in 2018, shone for Spain as they won 2018 U17 Women's World Cup in Uruguay and 2018 Uefa U17 Women's Championship in Lithuania.

The victory took Madrid II to the third position of the Spanish Reto Iberdrola table with seven points after four games and they will travel to face Friol in their next tie on November 29.

Dean Smith named December's Premier League manager of the month

58' Lenglet has an even better opportunity to score now! Again Barca take the corner short. Messi drifts inside onto his right foot and curls in a high cross. Again Lenglet wins the header but again it's straight at Oblak! Barca are starting to knock on the door.

56' Barca wins another corner after Pedri's shot is deflected. Barca will make a change first.

55' Barca successfully play out from the back and Pedri passes out wide to Alba. Alba's cross rebounds off Trippier. Barca have a corner which they take short. It's floated in to Lenglet whose low header forces a save from Oblak. It's a routine save but a decent chance for Barca.

53' Trippier knocks the ball off Lenglet for an Atletico corner. Correa swings it in and Pique makes short shrift of it.

52' Carrasco bears down on Barca's box again and tries to lay off to Joao Felix. Barca block it at the vital moment. Carrasco's direct runs are really testing the visitors.

51' Dembele is judged offside from Messi's pass. That's good for Barca - they have to play the ball forward more quickly than they did in the opening 45 minutes.

50' Dembele plays the ball off Hermoso and thinks he's earnt a corner. The officials disagree and signal for a goal-kick.

48' Trippier rolls a diagonal ball into the box for Correa. Lenglet and ter Stegen combine well enough to prevent Correa from getting a shot away.

46' Atletico start the half brightly as they win a corner down their left off Dembele. Nothing comes of it though.

45' The second half gets underway. No changes made by either side.

It begs the question as to why ter Stegen ventured that far out of his penalty area to challenge Carrasco. Barca's keeper rushed out far too quickly and made the situation a whole lot worse. Simeone is 45 minutes from winning his first league game against Barca in 18 attempts as Atletico boss. What can Barca do in the second half to stop that?

Carrasco's opportunistic strike is the difference between Atletico and Barca at half-time. It's been a quietly absorbing rather than raucous affair, with both sides having their opportunities. Carrasco has been the game's best player so far. Barca, as ever, look like they'll have to rely on Messi to get them out of this.

45' + 3' HALF-TIME: ATLETICO MADRID 1-0 BARCELONA

45' + 2' Barca look to end the half on a high by launching one last attack, but they struggle to find a way through Atletico's low block. Dembele shows too much of the ball to Hermoso and soon loses out. That's important because...

45' Dembele leaves the pitch briefly but the referee soon waves him back on. Carrasco soon gives away another foul. There'll be three minutes added onto this first half.

43' Carrasco does well to make up for a sloppy touch to pin Dembele near the byline. Dembele takes a tumble from Carrasco's challenge and the free-kick goes Barca's way. Carrasco throws a hand up in frustration but Dembele needs some treatment.

41' Chance for Barca! Messi cleverly ghosts into the box and only has Oblak to beat. Messi shoots low at the near post but it's not powerful enough to get past the Slovenian who gets down to smother it.

39' Atletico lure Barca's defence out to send Carrasco into the box. The Belgian's cross is blocked but it turns out he was just offside when he made his run anyway.

37' Oblak's first touch of a pass back to him is a little heavy, forcing the Atletico keeper to hump it clear. Barca take advantage of the situation by keeping possession for the first time in a while, only for Lenglet to fire a pass out of play.

35' Saul spots a shooting opportunity from distance and has a crack. It's nowhere near on target though and dribbles slowly enough for Barca to intercept it.

33' Trippier gets loose down the right and rolls an early cross behind Barca's defence that worries Lenglet enough to punt it out for a throw. Atletico can't do anything particularly interesting from the throw-in.

31' The referee trots back on the pitch. He appears to be happy now. After all that waiting Messi's free-kick isn't worth mentioning.

29' Messi wins a free-kick in the final third as Savic marks his opponently a little too closely. Barca won't get to take it yet though as the referee seems to be having a problem with his communication equipment.

27' A nice one-two between Trippier and Llorente down the right keeps Atletico moving. Simeone's side are starting to settle on the ball now as well as off it.

24' Atletico win a series of throw-ins down their left. The hosts have had less of the ball than Barca but have looked more threatening with it so far.

22' The corner's eventually taken after the referee goes over to have a chat with Hermoso. Atletico easily see it off.

21' Messi slips Roberto into the penalty area only for the full-back to cross instead of shoot. Barca still get a corner out of it.

19' Barca muck around at the edge of Atletico's penalty area without getting anywhere in particular. Atletico soon steal possession, forcing ter Stegen to claim a high ball into the box.

17' Joao Felix races onto a ball over the top and holds it up near the left corner flag. Atletico work the ball around to the other side but can't pick out Trippier who's making a run. Simeone applauds his side's effort.

15' Barca win a corner down their right which Messi takes. It's headed out for another Barca corner which Atletico again head clear.

13' Messi tries an eye-of-the-needle pass through the middle for Pedri but Savic cuts it out. He attempts another chip into the box but it floats harmlessly out of play. The Argentine apologises to his teammates.

11' Barca survive the corner but Atletico still have the ball and Llorente hits the crossbar! ter Stegen was statuesque as the midfielder struck from the right of the box after being slipped through by Correa. It goes out for a goal-kick.

10' Messi's free-kick causes Atletico no difficulty. Suddenly the hosts are flooding forward and Roberto punts a cross out for a corner. This game's started at a nicely brisk pace.

7' Barca's latest attack breaks down and Carrasco goes rampaging down the wing again. The Belgian's fouled as he cuts inside and wins a free-kick for Atletico.

5' Atletico take the corner and soon win another. Barca manage to see off the host's advances both times.

4' Barca look keen to keep control of the ball as is their wont. Atletico won't let them do that easily though. Atletico zip down the left through Carrasco who cuts back to Saul. Saul unleashes a belter first-time from the edge of the area and ter Stegen pushes it out for a corner.

3' Barca get the first chance of the game after a spell of possession. Dembele beats Hermoso to cross low from the right. Griezmann beats his marker to it in the box but it ricochets off the Frenchman and out of play for an Atletico goal-kick.

1' The referee blows his whistle and this mouthwatering affair is underway!

The two sides are out on the pitch here in Madrid. Barca appear to be wearing shirts in support of their young winger Ansu Fati who is out for four months with a knee injury.

Barcelona's hoodoo over Atletico is longstanding. Atletico have failed to win in their last 20 La Liga games against Barca. The last time Atletico managed to score more than one goal against their visitors in a league game was way back in February 2010, the last time they beat Barca at home. Will Atletico's unbeaten start to the season come to an end here?

Atletico make two changes from their 4-0 trouncing of Cadiz before the international break. Carrasco comes in, as does Correa. He replaces Luis Suarez after the ex-Barca striker tested positive for COVID-19. There are also two changes to Barca's team from their 5-2 win over Real Betis. Pjanic replaces the injured Busquets, while Messi returns to the starting line-up.

SUBS: Riqui Puig, Neto,  Carles Alena, Arnau Tenas, Philippe Coutinho, Trincao, Oscar Mingueza, Martin Braithwaite, Junior Firpo, Sergino Dest.

Barca arrive at Wanda Metropolitano in the unfamiliar territory of eighth in the table, having won just one of their last five league games. Ronald Koeman's team have a historical hold over Simeone's Atletico though. As we all know, history can be a hard thing for a team to shake.

Atletico might have a chance of winning La Liga this season. Diego Simeone's side have started their campaign extremely well and are currently on a 23-game unbeaten streak in the league, their longest ever in the competition. With both Real Madrid and Barca looking flawed this year, Atletico will feel a repeat of their 2013-14 triumph is very possible.

Hello! Welcome to our live text commentary of this La Liga match between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona at Wanda Metropolitano.

ISL 2021-22: East Bengal - Squad, Fixtures, Strengths, Weakness, & Key Players

60' West Brom are keeping the ball well at the moment, but all of their possession is in their own half. They're trying to push upfield, but United are pressing high and making it difficult for them to find space.

58' Gallagher picks out Pereira who is in a pocket of space just outside the box. He has time, but chooses to take the shot first time and fires his effort high and wide of the United goal.

55' IT'S SAVED! Fernandes steps up to take the penalty and he does his usual hop just before he strikes it. Johnstone goes the right way and palms it away from the bottom-right corner. VAR have a look at it though and it's going to be retaken as the keeper was well off his line before Fernandes hit the shot.

53' PENALTY TO UNITED! The home side counter-attack following De Gea's save and Mata makes a run down the left. He cuts inside before putting a cross in which hits Furlong's arm and the referee points to the spot.

52' GREAT SAVE! Diangana swings a great cross into the far post from the right and Townsend is unmarked as he chests the ball down. He takes the shot quickly, keeping it low, and De Gea makes the save with his feet.

51' Gallagher is being given a lot of room down the left and Townsend plays a good throughball forward to him. He takes a heavy first touch though which gives Wan-Bissaka time to get across and nick it off him.

49' SAVE! Rashford cuts inside to get away from Ajayi and he curls his shot towards the top-left corner of the net. Johnstone has it covered though and tips the ball wide of the post.

48' OVERTURNED! VAR had a look at the incident and asked the referee to go and have a look at the monitor. After looking at it himself, David Coote changes his mind and overturns his original decision.

46' PENALTY TO WEST BROM! Townsend plays the ball into Gallagher and he takes a touch before Fernandes comes across. He steps across the player and gets a touch on the ball but Gallagher goes down and the referee points to the spot.

46' West Brom get us back underway for the second half!

Bilic will be the happier of the two managers after a defensively solid display in the first half, but he'll be hoping his side can get forward to create a few more chances. As for United, they dominated possession but will need to find a way to open up some space in the final third.

It's goalless at the break between Manchester United and West Brom. Martial had two good chances, first with a flicked-on header which Johnstone pushed away and the keeper got down quickly to deny him again on the second. West Brom haven't had two many chances, but Grant came closest when his low effort was tipped wide of the far post by De Gea.

45' + 1' HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 WEST BROM.

44' United work it well to open up a bit of space on the left as Telles touches it onto Fred and he curls a good cross into the box. Martial is at the far post, but has two defenders with him and can't get on the end of it.

42' The corner is swung into the box for West Brom and it's Bartley that meets it in the middle. He's got his back to goal but heads his effort towards goal and it loops up onto the roof of the net.

40' West Brom are sitting deep in their own half and keeping their shape well as they continue to frustrate United and stop them getting into the box. Rashford tries to dribble past Ivanovic, but can't find a way past him.

38' Telles pulls the ball back to Fernandes and he plays a low pass towards the far post. Wan-Bissaka runs onto it but his cross from the byline is blocked and West Brom's defence is still standing strong.

36' Fernandes drills a low cross into the box from the corner and it loops up off Martial. Maguire nudges Ivanovic away from it and hits the shot on the volley but Bartley is in the right place to block it.

34' GOOD CHANCE! It's a great cross to the far post by Fernandes and he picks out Mata's run. He could've had a shot himself but tried to square it to Martial and Johnstone comes off his line to intercept it.

32' West Brom are struggling to get out of their own half at the moment as United start to push forward with more pace. Rashford chips the ball into the box but Mata can't control it with his first touch.

30' Fernandes finds himself in a pocket of space just outside the box and he's picked out by Matic. It's a poor ball from him though as he fizzes a cross into the area and there's nothing Martial can do with it.

28' None of the West Brom players close down Telles on the left and he has time to swing a cross into the middle of the box. He's looking for Martial in the middle, but Ajayi gets ahead of him to clear his lines.

26' Martial goes to ground just inside the box under a challenge from Pereira and he's asking for a penalty. It looks like he went down easily and the referee had a good view of it as he waves play on.

24' United are looking to make something happen down the left side again with Telles trying to pick out Fernandes' run this time. Sawyers spots the danger though and gets back to make an important interception.

22' Telles plays a good throughball forward for Rashford but there's nothing he can do with it as Ivanovic blocks off his run and switches play out to Gallagher to set West Brom on the attack.

20' GOOD CHANCE! It's a good throughball into Grant from Sawyers to get into the box. He takes a touch before firing his shot across goal but De Gea gets fingertips to the ball to send it wide of the far post.

18' West Brom are keeping the pressure on United at the moment and stopping them from getting out of their own half. Grant is played in by Townsend and tries to turn past Maguire just outside the box but runs straight into the captain.

16' GOOD SAVE! Rashford drills a low cross to Fernandes on the edge of the box and he touches it into Martial's path. He gets in between the two defenders and takes the shot first time, but Johnstone gets down quickly to push it away.

14' Diangana has a lot of space to run into down the right and Bartley tries to switch play out to him with a long ball over the top. He doesn't get enough on it though and Lindelof goes out to intercept it.

12' Martial makes a driving run down the right and pulls away from Ivanovic to drill a low cross into the box. Rashford misses it at the near post and Fred is just beaten to it by Ajayi in the middle.

10' West Brom are pushing higher upfield now and Townsend is in a good position on the left. He swings a good cross towards the far post, but Grant doesn't make the run and Telles sees it out of play.

8' Rashford floats a good cross into the far post from the left and he's trying to pick out Fernandes. He's on the stretch to try and bring it down, but it's just out of his reach and bounces straight out of play.

6' West Brom are patiently trying to play out from the back, but their play is being cut out by a few tackles by United. Townsend drifts inside on the left to try and get into space, but he's brought down by Fred.

4' Furlong spots Diangana making a run ahead of him down the right and plays a good throughball upfield for him to chase. He does get on the end of it, but the offside flag goes up against him.

2' SAVE! Mata swings a free-kick into the box from the right wing and it's Martial that flicks it on at the near post. He heads it across goal and Johnstone gets a strong hand to it to push it away.

1' Fernandes gets the game underway for United!

The teams are out on the pitch now, with kick-off just moments away.

West Brom are winless in their eight Premier League games so far this season, failing to score in four of their last five. Only in 1985-86 have they failed to win any of their first nine league games.

Slaven Bilic makes four changes to his team after their loss to Tottenham before the international break. Ivanovic, Pereira, Sawyers and Diangana come into the starting line-up, with O'Shea, Krovinovic and Robinson dropping to the bench. Jake Livermore is unavailable after testing positive for coronavirus.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes just two changes to the side that beat Everton two weeks ago as he brings in Telles and Matic. McTominay starts on the bench, while Luke Shaw misses out after going off injured in that game.

WEST BROM SUBS: David Button, Rekeem Harper, Callum Robinson, Filip Krovinovic, Matt Phillips, Dara O'Shea, Hal Robson-Kanu.

WEST BROM STARTING XI (5-4-1): Sam Johnstone; Darnell Furlong, Semi Ajayi, Kyle Bartley, Branislav Ivanovic, Conor Townsend; Matheus Pereira, Romaine Sawyers, Conor Gallagher, Grady Diangana; Karlan Grant.

MANCHESTER UNITED SUBS: Dean Henderson, Edinson Cavani, Scott McTominay, Daniel James, Donny van de Beek, Brandon Williams, Axel Tuanzebe.

MANCHESTER UNITED STARTING XI (4-2-3-1): David de Gea; Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Alex Telles; Nemanja Matic, Fred; Juan Mata, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford; Anthony Martial.

United are still looking for their first home win in the league this season (D1 L3), with their only win at Old Trafford coming against RB Leipzig in the Champions League at the end of October. They face a West Brom side who are without a win since they were promoted back into the Premier League, drawing three and losing five of their games so far this campaign.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the Premier League meeting between Manchester United and West Brom at Old Trafford!

Napoli clinch first Serie A title in 33 years

Son Heung-min struck and Giovani Lo Celso scored 35 seconds after coming on as a substitute as Tottenham defeated Manchester City.

Tottenham moved top of the Premier League after strikes from Son Heung-min and Giovani Lo Celso earned them a statement 2-0 victory over Manchester City.

Jose Mourinho celebrated a year in charge of Spurs with a second straight win over old rival Guardiola, who was hoping to mark his new contract with a positive result but has now lost all three of his games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Son converted a Tanguy Ndombele pass after five minutes on Saturday and Mourinho's men, who spent much of the intervening time on the back foot, sealed the triumph when Lo Celso beat Ederson with 25 minutes remaining.

Aymeric Laporte had a first-half goal ruled out for City and they are now eight points behind Spurs, who ended Chelsea's brief stint at the top of the table.

Spurs made an excellent start when a lofted ball from Ndombele found Son, who beat the offside trap and took one touch with his right foot before sending a cool finish with his left through the legs of an onrushing Ederson.

Harry Kane had the ball in the net after a superb move involving Son, only to be denied by an offside flag.

Aside from those incidents, City controlled proceedings with Ferran Torres, Rodri and Ruben Dias all forcing routine saves from Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

The visitors thought they had levelled the contest after 27 minutes when Laporte fired in, only for referee Mike Dean to overturn the goal after viewing the monitor, having found Gabriel Jesus handled Rodri's cross before passing to the defender.

City continued to probe without creating a notable opportunity before a swift Spurs counter-attack saw Kane thread a pass through to Lo Celso, the substitute hitting a fine left-footed finish beyond Ederson just 35 seconds after replacing Ndombele.

Guardiola threw on England duo Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling with 18 minutes left but Lloris saved from Dias late on as Spurs held on for a memorable victory by the same scoreline as they won this fixture in February.

What does it mean? City continue to struggle

City had 11 shots to Spurs' one in the first half and 68.7 per cent of the possession, and by the end of the game had won the shot battle 22-4.

But it was a familiar story for City to many of their away defeats since the start of last season, with just five of their efforts finding the target and their play becoming increasingly less threatening as the match went on.

They have netted 10 league goals in eight games and just five in their last six. We now know Guardiola is staying and he knows there is a lot of work to do.

Kane puts Spurs into title race

Kane's assist means he has now been involved in 24 goals in just 15 games across all competitions this term.

His all-round play has been superb all season and his fine pass for Lo Celso was one of 22 he completed in the opposing half, a team high.

It is still early in the season, but four consecutive league wins for the first time since February 2019 mean Spurs are firmly in the title race.

Familiar failings for City

The positioning of Rodri, Joao Cancelo and Laporte can be called into question for Son's opener, while Ederson charged out of goal on both occasions, though perhaps of greater concern is City's attacking play.

Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne did not find the target from 10 combined attempts, while Torres had just one key pass as he was unable to match his fine display for Spain. The return of Sergio Aguero, an unused substitute in this one after a month out injured, cannot come quickly enough.

Key Opta Facts

- Tottenham have won back-to-back league games against Manchester City for the first time since a run of three between September 2015 and October 2016.

- Spurs will finish a day top of the Premier League table for the first time since August 2014, while it is the first time they will end a day top of the top flight after at least nine games into a season since January 1985.

- A return of 12 points from eight games marks City's lowest points total at this stage of a Premier League campaign since 2008-09 (10), while 10 goals is their lowest tally after eight games since 2006-07 (6).

- City have had 41 shots across their last two Premier League games against Spurs, losing them both without scoring. Meanwhile, Spurs scored with both of their shots on target in this match.

- Spurs have scored more goals in the first half of Premier League games than any other side this season, with their 11 in the opening 45 minutes being more than City have netted overall (10).

Ticketless fans can enter Qatar after group stage

73' Changes from both sides, then. Hopefully that injects a bit of energy back into a game which was in danger of fizzling out. Dybala will be keen to make the most of his time on the pitch after a frustrating start to the season so far.

68' This looks nasty for Klavan. Ounas and Marin take the corner short, the latter eventually chipping the ball into the area. Ronaldo looks to hook it clear but ends up backheeling the ball into the danger zone. Klavan flies through the air and collides head-first with De Ligt, and the former Liverpool man goes straight down. The ball drops in but a goal doesn't appear to have been given, presumably for a foul on De Ligt. Klavan is receiving treatment to a bloody head in the area.

67' Ounas and Pedro combine down the right and De Ligt gets across to block the latter's cross behind for a corner.

65' Rabiot sets Bernardeschi in behind down the left. He gets to the edge of the area and pulls it back to Morata who shoots first time, looking to bend an effort into the top-right corner but sending it just over the crossbar.

64' The game has slipped into a bit of a lull in the last few minutes. Cagliari are going to need to make some changes to have a hope of getting back into this.

62' Cagliari work the ball into the final third but, once again lacking the guile to pick their way through, Rog has a pop from range. It flies over.

60' Ounas looks to inject some energy into a Cagliari attack, driving infield from the right before hitting a crossfield pass to the feet of Sottil on the other side. The move doesn't develop any further, the visitors unable to find a way through the Juve defence.

58' Kulusevski finds Cuadrado in space on the right but his low cross is easy for Walukiewicz to clear at the edge of the six-yard box.

57' Marin tries his luck from range but slips onto his backside as he shoots and spoons his effort way over the crossbar.

56' Juve are getting more space in behind since half-time. Kulusevski drives down the right and squares for Ronaldo who, surprisingly while on a hat-trick, dummies it on to Bernardeschi. His first-time shot is just turned round the post, and the resulting corner is cleared.

53' Off the bar! Demiral meets Cuadrado's corner with a booming header but he puts it onto the woodwork.

53' Cuadrado dances into the area from the right, getting away from Marin and Pisacane but firin his shot straight into a crowd of bodies from a tight angle.

52' Zappa lifts a free-kick from the left towards Pedro at the far post. He nods it back into the middle where Bernardeschi heads clear.

50' Arthur almost sells Buffon short with a pass in the penalty area, but the veteran goalkeeper reacts to it before Simeone has time to react, with the forward already moving in the opposite direction.

49' Rog turns really well away from two Juventus midfielders then puts in a good sliding tackle to win the ball back from a third after losing possession with a heavy touch, but he can't do it all himself and eventually Juve get it back.

47' Kulusevski puts Ronaldo through on goal but he can't quite get away from the last line of defence. He checks back and looks for Morata to his right, but his pass is underhit and cut out.

45' We're back underway for the second half.

Cagliari were on good form coming into this game, but it's a long way back for them now. Their dangermen, Pedro and Simeone, have hardly been in the game.

Juventus go in with a two-goal lead, and they're good value for it. Cagliari started brightly but the hosts got on top pretty early on and haven't looked back. Bernardeschi had a goal ruled out for a tight offside call on Morata in the build-up, but Morata got his assist with seven minutes of the half remaining, holding the ball up for Ronaldo to fire in from the edge of the area. Only a couple of minutes later, he had his second, turning the ball in at the far post after Demiral nodded Cuadrado's corner on to him.

45' + 1' HALF-TIME: JUVENTUS 2-0 CAGLIARI

45' + 1' Ronaldo also moves to eight goals in his first five Serie A appearances this season, drawing level with Dybala's record tally from three years ago. Will he pass it with a hat-trick?

44' Ronaldo hadn't seen a lot of the ball before his opening goal, but he doesn't need to. Two moments of sheer quality from their star man and Juventus will be very confident of winning this game.

42' Ronaldo gets the ball to the right of midfield and drives into space outside the area. It looks as though he's winding up a shot but opts against it, eventually turning back and recycling possession. It comes back to Ronaldo and he tees up Kulusevski at the edge of the box, and his shot deflects behind for a corner.

40' Ronaldo now has seven goals in five games this season. In the three points for a win era, Paulo Dybala is the only Juventus player to score more in their first five appearances in a Serie A campaign. He hit eight in his first five outings in 2017-18, so Ronaldo can still catch him tonight.

37' Cuadrado's free-kick from the right is headed away by Simeone on the line of the six-yard box. It drops to Bernardeschi and he shoots first time, drilling a low effort straight at Cragno. He hit it powerfully through a crowd, but it was a simple enough save.

33' Marin and Rog pass the ball between themselves at the right corner of the Juve area, seemingly unsure what to do with it. Eventually it's played to Ounas on the right, but he has to stretch for it and his cross flies straight behind for a goal kick.

32' Danilo looks to lead a charge forward from defence and gets halfway into the Cagliari half with the ball, but he's tackled in midfield and it spins away for a goal kick.

30' After half an hour, Juventus have had 71 per cent of possession. Going into this game, Cagliari had conceded the most shots on target of any side in the top five European leagues, while Cragno is the only goalkeeper to have made more than 100 saves. They have real problems stopping their opponents from turning possession into goalscoring chances.

29' Juventus are well on top now, and this is the closest they've come so far. Danilo picks out Cuadrado on the right. He pulls the ball back for Kulusevski in the area and he goes for goal, bending a shot just wide of the far bottom corner.

27' Rog fires a pass in to Pedro in the area, but he can't control it properly and a possible chance for the visitors goes begging.

25' Oooh! That was nearly a tap-in for Ronaldo. Juve move the ball from left to right and Morata flicks it on to where Ronaldo looks to be wide open in the area, but Walukiewicz does really well to stretch his leg and poke it out of reach for a corner. Morata meets the corner with a strong header at the near post but he powers his effort over.

25' Bernardeschi shows a good change of pace to burst clear of Zappa down the left, but his cross flies straight into the gloves of Cragno.

23' Kulusevski is proving a real problem on the right. He comes infield again and finds first Ronaldo, then Rabiot, but neither can find room for a shot. Eventually Ronaldo gets the ball back and goes for goal, but his effort towards the top-right corner deflects wide for a corner, which is cleared.

21' A rare lapse in concentration from Ronaldo there. He gets possession in midfield and looks to turn away into space, but leaves the ball behind and Rog comes over to nick it away.

19' Kulusevski causes some indecision in the area as he cuts inside from the right and bends a left-footed cross in from deep. It's half-cleared only as far as Bernardeschi, but his first-time shot from inside the area flies way over the crossbar.

18' Morata and Ronaldo combine with a one-two to try and set the latter free into the area, but Rog makes a good, strong challenge on the Portuguese right on the edge of the box.

16' A good counter-attack from Cagliari breaks down after a heavy touch from Simeone at the edge of the area, and he fouls De Ligt as he looks to win the ball back.

15' Bernardeschi crosses towards Morata from the left, but it's too close to the goalkeeper and Cragno punches clear.

13' Juve are growing into the game now after a slightly sluggish start. Cagliari are still buzzing around with lots of energy, but the home side are looking more assured in possession.

11' GOOOA-no! Juventus have the ball in the net but it won't stand. Rabiot was heavily involved in the build-up, bringing the ball from right to left and playing it to the feet of Morata. He held it up before flicking it round the corner to the unmarked Bernardeschi who lashed home, but the linesman's flag was straight up for offside against Morata.

10' Pisacane does well by his own corner flag, holding onto the ball and winning a throw-in when under pressure from Rabiot and Bernardeschi.

8' Juventus have their first real spell of possession, playing the ball patiently around the Cagliari half before finding Morata in the area. A heavy touch looks to have snuffed out the chance but he battles to win it back before forcing in a cross which is easily cleared.

6' Cagliari look confident. They have won three of their last four games in Serie A - only Roma have won more points in the same time period.

5' Marin knocks Morata over in midfield as he was looking up to try and find Ronaldo, who was making a run ahead of him. Cagliari have started very energetically.

4' Tripaldelli gets to the left byline and pulls a low cross back into the area, but it's cleared away by De Ligt.

3' Pedro wins the ball from Cuadrado in midfield and leads a counter-attack down the left. He makes good progress and lifts a decent cross in to Simeone in the area, but he's eventually crowded out.

2' Morata gets a first opportunity to carry the ball down the right but Klavan does well to shepherd him towards the corner flag and win a throw-in.

1' We're off!

The teams are on their way out onto the pitch. The players are wearing red marks on their faces as part of an ongoing campaign to raise awareness of violence against women. Kick-off is moments away.

Cagliari won the last fixture between these teams, 2-0 at home at the end of July. Before then, Juve had been unbeaten in 18 matches against today’s opponents, winning 15 of those encounters.

It’s welcome back to Dutch international De Ligt, who makes his first appearance since having shoulder surgery in August. With Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini both out, Demiral starts alongside him in the centre of defence. Diego Godin tested positive for Covid-19 during the international break so he’s out for Cagliari, with Nahitan Nandez self-isolating as a precaution.

SUBS: Matteo Tramoni, Guglielmo Vicario, Riccardo Sottil, Gaston Pereiro, Fabrizio Caligara, Andrea Carboni, Leonardo Pavoletti, Christian Oliva, Simone Aresti, Alberto Cerri.

Man City closing in on deals for Fluminense youngsters Kayky & Metinho

The Blancos coach insisted he was still hopeful of retaining the league title despite dropping points away to Villarreal

Zinedine Zidane was in no mood to listen to his critics after dropping more Liga points with Real Madrid on Saturday, telling reporters he would carry on doing his job as always.

The Merengue enjoyed a perfect start against Villarreal in their first game back from the international break when Mariano fired them into the lead after just two minutes.

But Gerard Moreno hit from the penalty spot to level deep into the second half and the hosts ended the game as the side that looked most likely to take all three points as Madrid withstood a late barrage to tie 1-1.

The result leaves the reigning Liga champions fourth in the standings having won just five of their opening nine fixtures, and they could fall six points behind leaders Real Sociedad should the Basques win Sunday's clash against Cadiz.

And Zidane appeared to be feeling the pressure as he snapped back at journalists after the final whistle.

"I have the same hopes as always and that won't change," he fired when asked about Madrid's growing number of critics.

"Don't you guys worry. Carry on with what you are doing and I will keep working.

"[The draw] is disappointing. We deserved a lot more today for the game we played. I was annoyed because of the effort the boys put in.

"Mariano's thing (the forward was taken off after scoring Madrid's solitary goal), he has been a long time out, he was exhausted.

"We dropped two points today, clearly."

Recent reports in Spain suggest that, after losing Gareth Bale to Tottenham over the summer, Madrid are bracing for the exit of Isco.

The playmaker is said to be keen to leave as early as January, but Zidane denied any knowledge of the situation.

"Has Isco asked to leave? No, not at all. We will not talk internal matters," he explained.

"But Isco is a Madrid player, he is staying here, he is with us and we don't need to speak further."

Zidane's Madrid are back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to San Siro to take on Inter in the Champions League.

Lampard expecting Covid disruption for Chelsea with Man City and FA Cup games in doubt

Stephen Eustaquio played alongside the hard-working frontman at Pacos de Ferreira and expects him to move again after raising his stock on Merseyside

Diogo Jota will not be sticking around at Liverpool, claims his former Pacos de Ferreira team-mate Stephen Eustaquio, with the Portuguese forward being tipped to “go higher”.

There are not many destinations in world football that can be considered a step up from Anfield.

Jota, though, is showing across the early months of his time on Merseyside that he is capable of gracing any side on the planet.

An immediate impact has been made with the Premier League champions since completing a £45 million ($60m) move from Wolves.

The Portugal international has hit seven goals through 11 appearances, with that return including a Champions League hat-trick against Atalanta.

Eustaquio is not surprised to see the 23-year-old shining on the grandest of stages and believes he is destined for even bigger and better things in the future.

He told La Vanguardia: “Jota was in Pacos, Atletico Madrid, Porto, Liverpool. He works a lot.

“He is a very hard-working person, very delicate with the ball; he plays a lot.

“He is not going to stay there; he is going to go higher. I shared a dressing room with him, he was captain of the Portugal Under-21 team.”

For now, Jota is happy at Liverpool and tied to a long-term contract, but he has come a long way in a short space of time and Eustaquio believes dedication to any craft will always be rewarded.

“In bad times he [Jota] showed a very strong personality,” the midfielder added. “He is a very humble person and deserves to be where he is.”

While Eustaquio would appear to be suggesting that Jota could link up with the likes of Barcelona or Real Madrid at some stage in his career, Liverpool legend John Barnes has claimed that the versatile frontman would not enjoy the same success in La Liga as he has in England.

The Reds icon told BonusCodeBets: “I thought he was a good player for Wolves, I thought he would do well but I don’t think anyone would imagine he’d be doing this well.

“If Jota goes to Barcelona, for example, he won’t go there and score loads of goals or play as well.

“Jota is a fantastic player, but there’s no way that Jota would be able to go to Real Madrid and do the same thing, it’s all down to Jurgen Klopp and finding those players that suit his style.”

'Crivellaro back to his best' - Csaba Laszlo's Chennaiyin FC stifle FC Goa but profligacy still a concern

The Nigeria international came off the bench to help the Yellow Submarine share the spoils with Zinedine Zidane's men

Samuel Chukwueze played a crucial role in helping Villarreal hold Real Madrid to a 1-1 draw in Saturday's La Liga encounter.

After featuring in Nigeria's double-header Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures against Sierra Leone, Chukwueze was dropped to the bench at Estadio de la Ceramica.

He was later introduced after the hour-mark and he helped the hosts cancel Mariano Diaz's opener in the second minute.

14 minutes after he replaced Carlos Bacca, Chukwueze was fouled in the penalty area and Gerard Moreno stepped forward to convert the resulting spot-kick which earned Villarreal a point.

The result stretched the Yellow Submarine's unbeaten start to the 2020-21 season to 10 league games and they remain unmoved in second spot in the La Liga table with 19 points after 10 outings.

Chukwueze has been a key player for Unai Emery's side in this campaign with a goal and an assist in nine league appearances so far this season.

The Super Eagles forward will shift his attention to Thursday's Uefa Europa League trip to Maccabi Tel Aviv before they visit league leaders Real Sociedad for their next La Liga match on November 29.

PSL Wrap: Swallows FC go level with Mamelodi Sundowns, TTM's struggles continue

Abafana bes'Thende drew first blood in their Premiership matches against the Glamour Boys in Durban thanks to a penalty just after half time

Commentating in the SuperSport studio, former Kaizer Chiefs player Stanton Fredericks says Amakhosi were unfortunate to concede a penalty against Golden Arrows.

Chiefs were held to a 2-2 draw by Abafana bes'Thende in a league encounter at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

It was Arrows who scored the first goal of the game when Siboniso Conco held his nerve from the penalty spot to beat Itumeleng Khune in the 49th minute.

The spot-kick had been awarded by referee Olani Kwinda after Willard Katsande had challenged Zolani Nkombela in the Amakhosi box.

It was a tough call to make, with even television replays not really proving conclusive. There was a suggestion though that Katsande just managed to nick the ball first, which is how Fredericks saw it.

"My take on that is that Katsande was reacting. Initially, he missed the [earlier] tackle. Moving on to that, he was again second to the ball," the former Bafana Bafana midfielder said in the post-match discussion in the SuperSport studio.

Although the match official had done well to be placed close to the action, it was possible that he didn't quite have the best angle to view the moment of contact, as Fredericks pointed out:

"I think the ref was in a very good position, close to the play. But I think that his [Katsande's] body just obscured him seeing the contact. I think Katsande got the ball and then the defender [Nkombela] kicked him.

"I think it wasn't a penalty, but it was so close to call. It could have gone either way," he concluded.

Following Conco’s penalty goal, Chiefs scored twice through Leonardo Castro to take the lead by the 65th minute.

But they were only in front for five minutes as Nduduzo Sibiya scored a beauty of a goal to earn the KwaZulu-Natal side a share of the spoils.

The result means Chiefs have won only one of their opening four league matches. Their next game is against Swallows FC on Tuesday night at the Dobsonville Stadium.

Wild day sees Japan, Spain survive as Germany bounced again

The Gunners defender claims there is no issue between two club colleagues at Emirates Stadium, with their tussle considered to be a positive thing

Calum Chambers considers the recent clash between his Arsenal team-mates David Luiz and Dani Ceballos to have been nothing more than “competitive training”.

The Gunners have seen tempers start to boil over behind the scenes at London Colney.

It is claimed that Brazilian defender Luiz tangled with Spanish playmaker Ceballos when emotions got the better of two players that should be pulling in the same direction.

Mikel Arteta has been quick to brush the incident under a carpet at Emirates Stadium, although he is eager to discover who leaked the news of a fight breaking out.

Chambers is another who considers the matter to have blown over, with no tension to be found in the Gunners camp.

For him, Luiz squaring up to Ceballos is merely an example of the kind of passion that Arsenal need to be embracing.

He told Sky Sports: “It’s just competitive training, that’s all we want it to be. We want it to be match-like, you’ve got to train as if it’s a match.

“You want to fight and compete for the ball. If it goes over, [and] it can’t go over, it’s displaying something that’s not part of the game.

“Everything that happened was just competitive tackling and just a bit of competitiveness with the boys, which I think is not a problem at all.”

Arteta has claimed that he did not get a good look at the coming together between Luiz and Ceballos, which is helping him to turn a blind eye to it.

Martin Keown has, however, urged the Spaniard to make sure that he gets his Arsenal house in order and prevents a potential “problem” from emerging in north London.

The former Gunners defender told talkSPORT, with Arteta’s side still searching for consistency this season: “If it did happen, it wouldn't be unusual. These things happen.

“It's never nice to see it but Arsenal lost that game against Villa heavily and maybe there is a little bit of a problem within the camp and sometimes people get fraught with one another.

“There's a fighting spirit there. You won't want it to happen too often.

“You need to keep everyone together and Arteta needs to be on top of it.”

Arsenal will be back in Premier League action on Sunday when they take in a trip to Leeds.

Jose Mourinho vs Tim Sherwood: Assessing who was the better Tottenham manager

The 28-year-old defender opened her goal account for the Italian giants in Saturday’s triumph over the Serie B outfit

Nigeria international Osinachi Ohale scored her first AS Roma goal as they defeated Tavagnacco 5-0 in Saturday's Italian Women's Cup match.

After an impressive spell at Spanish side Real Madrid – where she scored two goals in 15 outings, the ex-Vaxjo defender completed her move to Stadio Tre Fontane this summer.

Ohale, who made her debut for Elizabetta Bavagnoli's side in a 2-0 victory over Hellas Verona on October 3, finally notched her first goal in Italy on her third appearance in all competitions.

The 28-year-old opened the scoring for the Giallorosse in this year's competition 19 minutes into the match at Comunale di Tavagnacco.

Four minutes later, Andrine Hegerberg finished a fantastic attack to double the visitors lead before Manuela Giugliano made it three for the visitors in the 29th minute of the first half.

After the recess, Agnese Bonfantini netted a fourth of the match for AS Roma on her 50th outing in the 64th minute before Emma Severini also bagged her maiden goal for the club at the death.

The victory handed AS Roma a winning start in a round-robin group stage contest and go top of Group H on two superior goals.

They will need to be at their best to beat city rivals and Second Division side Roma to reach the quarter-final of the competition.

Having returned to winning ways, Bavagnoli's team will hope to build on their new momentum when they return from the international break against Florentia on December 12.

Investigation into racist event at Atletico Madrid

Sammy Omollo believes his team Posta Rangers is ready for the new season after defeating Gor Mahia by a solitary goal in a friendly match played at Jamhuri Grounds in Nairobi.

It was Posta the Mailmen who started strongly and their efforts paid dividends when former Ulinzi Stars forward Elijah Mwanzia connected a rebound. K'Ogalo looked lost and were uncharacteristically off colour.

The champions could have lost by a bigger margin, if not for the wastefulness in front of goal.

"I am satisfied with my players because we are developing with every match," Rangers coach Omollo told Goal after Saturday's game.

"We drew 0-0 with Tusker FC in our initial pre-season friendly, before registering a 1-0 loss to Gor Mahia. However, we have rectified our mistakes and you could see on the pitch.

"My defense was strong throughout and we managed to keep a clean sheet. Gor Mahia are a tough team and when you get a win plus a clean sheet against them, definitely it shows we are doing okay.

"I feel we are ready for the start of the season."

The first match was between the Mailmen and Simba wa Nairobi and the Omollo-led charges put up a good fight to win by a solitary goal scored by former Sofapaka FC player Ezekiel Okare.

In the second match against K'Ogalo, the newly promoted FKF Premier League side managed to show an improved game. They managed to win a penalty early on but Anthony Kimani, who is commonly referred to as Muki, failed to convert it.

However, it mattered less as former AFC Leopards defender Abdalla 'Shittu' Salim headed in an opener in favour of City Stars.

The Kangemi-based side conceded a penalty in the second half to ensure the spoils were shared.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League will kick-off next weekend.

Tusker will play Gor Mahia while Posta Rangers will be hosting Bidco United. Newly promoted Nairobi City Stars will have a task against Nzoia Sugar while AFC Leopards will host Western Stima

Mathare United will be home against Kakamega Homeboyz with Kariobangi Sharks tackling Wazito.

'Revenge' game: Doc replay fired Arsenal to win

Ghana new boy Tariqe Fosu has set his sights on helping the Black Stars end their long quest for a major title in recent times.

The Brentford attacker made a promising debut to his international career with a decent performance in a friendly fixture against Mali in October, earning himself a second straight starting berth in a tie with Qatar three days later.

The Black Stars have gone without a major title since winning the 1982 Afcon tournament in Libya.

"I want to win trophies, bring trophies back home and try to help the team as much as possible to bring a trophy to people back home," Fosu told the Ghana Football Association (GFA) official website.

"I think I can help the team a lot and I’m ready whenever I get a call up to represent my country so it’s obviously up to the coach to decide on the tactics but I am always ready to help.

"I like to win and so I play in different positions and in terms of passing, I’m a good passer of the ball as well."

Fosu's October output apparently left a good impression on Ghana coach CK, who called him up for a 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifying double-header in Sudan earlier this month.

He first made the Black Stars roster ahead of an Afcon qualifier in March but the coronavirus pandemic resulted in the cancellation of the match.

"I think it was great to get the chance to play for Ghana," said Fosu.

"My debut was delayed a bit because of Covid-19 but when the call came for me to travel to Turkey to play in the International friendly, I was very happy.

"It came in quite late but when the coach called me to come, I said I was very happy to come and I spoke to him before and I’m happy that he gave me the chance to perform and show my qualities."

Born in England to Ghanaian parents, Fosu made his first ever international appearance at any level for his country of birth at U18 level.

He is among a new breed of dual nationals drafted into the Ghana set-up.

"My grandparents are from Ghana and they live in Ghana now. They are from Kumasi so I love Ghana," the 25-year-old explained.

"I wasn’t born in Ghana but I moved here when I was three. I schooled here at Ridge school in Kumasi so I know the country well.

"Growing up in Ghana, I always supported the team and when I got the call up, I was more than delighted to come.

"I don’t think there’s a stereotype of European players because after my experience, there has been nothing but good vibes and good experience."

So far this season, Fosu has made five league appearances for Brentford.

Villarreal 1-1 Real Madrid: Champions denied despite rare Mariano strike

Mariano Diaz stepped into Karim Benzema's shoes, but the absence of Sergio Ramos in defence proved costly for Real Madrid at Villarreal.

Real Madrid's LaLiga title defence suffered another early setback as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Villarreal despite leading for 74 minutes on Saturday.

The champions were without captain Sergio Ramos and star striker Karim Benzema due to injury but were in front after just 107 seconds through Mariano Diaz, back in the line-up for the first time in 18 months.

Mariano's previous start in May 2019 had seen him score twice in a victory over Villarreal, yet his goal - which angered Unai Emery and his players amid confusion over a potential offside - proved only enough for a point this time.

Thibaut Courtois felled Samuel Chukwueze and, after a number of close calls for a defence evidently missing Ramos, Gerard Moreno tucked away the resulting penalty to equalise, keeping Madrid fourth following their humbling at Valencia prior to the international break.

Mariano at least made the most of a rare opportunity, although his contentious opener came after the linesman briefly raised his flag in error, seemingly believing the offside Lucas Vazquez was set to collect Dani Carvajal's pass.

The right-back instead himself seized on the loose ball and crossed for Mariano to head in, prompting unsuccessful appeals from furious home defenders.

Villarreal held their line well thereafter to halt Madrid's subsequent first-half attacks, but Dani Parejo could not capitalise at the other end as he nodded over after finding space where Ramos might typically be stationed.

And that wastefulness continued into the second half. Moreno dragged a shot across the face of goal following a poor Toni Kroos pass, before Parejo blazed wide.

However, Courtois - underworked despite the hosts' openings - raced from his line and took down Chukwueze, allowing Moreno to pick out the bottom-left corner 14 minutes from time.

What does it mean? Madrid pressure persists

"This is Real Madrid," Zinedine Zidane said on Friday. "We know the situation, we know all about it; every time we play we can't fail." The coach did not shy away from a question about the pressure mounting in the capital due to a testing start to the season.

A breakthrough Champions League win at home to Inter was supposed to get Madrid back on track on November 3, but they subsequently went down 4-1 at Valencia. Now, Moreno's equaliser here ensured there is again no respite ahead of a vital return fixture against the Nerazzurri at San Siro.

Madrid break emergency glass

Mariano does not see much action at Madrid, where Benzema is the undoubted first choice. But with the number nine ruled out on the eve of Saturday's game and Luka Jovic missing due to COVID-19, Zidane recalled his fringe man and was immediately rewarded.

The striker scored in a Clasico win against Barcelona last season, yet that had been his only goal from eight shots in a mere 56 league minutes since his two-goal salvo on his previous start. Mariano played 85 minutes on Saturday and netted with his only shot while creating two chances for others, proving an effective emergency option.

He was caught offside four times but not when it mattered most.

Duo's goalkeeping gaffes

Sergio Asenjo faced only one shot on target. Unfortunately, he made no attempt to save that sole effort, instead already looking towards the linesman as Mariano stooped to nod into the net. It was an episode the overeager official might too hope to forget, but this was Asenjo's error.

Crucially, however, it was a similar story at the other end. Having watched Villarreal fail to trouble the target with any of their prior eight attempts, Courtois made the mistake of unnecessarily involving himself in play, costing his side two points.

What's next?

Madrid visit Inter on Wednesday in a huge game for both sides. Villarreal are at Maccabi Tel Aviv a day later in the Europa League.
