Oduor’s Barnsley manager Ismael wants more despite Nottingham Forest victory

The tactician was not fully satisfied by Saturday's performance as he feels either side would have emerged victorious

Kenya international Barnsley Oduor was introduced in the 82nd minute as Barnsley fought to register a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday at Oakwell.

Callum Styles and Cauley Woodrow scored the goals that gave Barnsley a fourth win in five games since the appointment of Valerien Ismael as manager.

Oduor’s side would have enjoyed a huge scoreline had they not been denied by the woodwork on three occasions. Goalkeeper Jack Walton also played a vital role as he denied Nottingham Forest at least a goal by pulling off some good saves.

Styles scored the opener in the 85th minute, three minutes after Oduor had replaced Alex Mowatt, before Woodrow added the second two minutes later to ensure they sealed not only a win but a clean sheet at home.

Woodrow would have ended the day with more goals but he was denied by the woodwork twice.

The Tykes are now 13th while Nottingham Forest are 20th. Barnsley manager Ismael has called for more in the coming games as they continue to look a solid side, unlike in the first five matches of the season.

“It was a 50-50 game - both sides could have gone in front - but when you stay focused and you win such an important game, the feeling for the guys is that it's a step in the right way,” Ismael told BBC Sport.

“We want to start strong and finish strong, we want to play like this all the time for 90-plus minutes.

“I hope in the future that the guys know we can score goals in any minute from any situation.”

On his part, Nottingham Forest manager Chris Hughton said they have to blame themselves for wasting chances.

"We created the better chances through normal play. If you don't put your chances away then a good enough side like Barnsley can possibly capitalise on that,” Hughton said.

“We haven't played a bad team so far this season. Barnsley kept going and looked for their opportunities.

“Unfortunately, it didn't happen for us today and it did for them. We've got to be scoring goals and if we're not taking the opportunities then we continue to put that pressure on ourselves.”

Barnsley will play Brentford on November 24.

World Cup Group H: What do Portugal, Uruguay, Ghana and South Korea need to qualify?

Following their latest result away from home, the Great Old have now played four league games without a win

Dieumerci Mbokani’s Royal Antwerp settled for a 1-1 draw against Fabrice Ondoa’s Oostende in Saturday’s Belgian First Division A clash.

Lior Refaelov’s 81st-minute strike cancelled out Anton Tanghe’s effort as the match at the Versluys Arena finished on a no winner, no vanquished note.

De Kustboys came into the game with the mindset of winning after losing to Standard Liege and Club Brugge in their last two games, but they were unable to secure maximum points at home.

The first chance of the game fell for Oostende, but Cameron McGeehan could not make good use of Makhtar Gueye's pass. A few minutes later, Antwerp threatened to score but Pieter Gerkens’ header off a freekick from Refaelov was saved.

Before the half-time break, Antwerp fluffed a golden opportunity that saw goalkeeper Guillaume Hubert cleverly save an angled shot from captain Faris Haroun. Haroun had escaped being dismissed by referee Erik Lambrechts when he brought down Senegal’s Gueye.

Both teams returned for the last 45 minutes with the desire to win, nevertheless, it was Oostende who got the first goal of the game through Tangheon the 80th minute. The 21-year-old Belgian defender headed a well-taken corner kick from Maxime D'Arpino past goalkeeper Jean Butez.

While the dust was yet to settle, the visiting side equalised though Refaelov thanks to an assist from Koji Miyoshi almost immediately.

Despite having nine minutes left to play, both teams were unable to get the important winner as they were contented with one goal apiece.

Gueye was named in the starting XI but he was replaced in the 74th minute by Marko Kvasina, while Zambia’s Fashion Sakala came off for Mamadou Thiam in the 66th minute. Manager Alexander Blessin did not list Cameroonian goalkeeper Ondoa for the low-scoring affair.

For Royal Antwerp, Senegalese defender Abdoulaye Seck and Cameroonian midfielder Martin Hongla were on parade from start to finish as Ghana's Opoku Ampomah, who is on loan from Fortuna Dusseldorf, was a 70th minute replacement for Norway's Simen Jukleroed.

Cameroon's Didier Ze, Congo's Guy Mbenza, Congo DR's duo of Luete Dongo and Nill De Pauw, Angola's Bruny Nsimba and Nigeria's Junior Pius were not dressed for action by Ivan Leko.

As a consequence of this result, Oostende stay in the 10th spot with 16 points from 12 matches, while the Antwerp-based outfit are fifth after garnering 22 points having played one game more.

Kylian Mbappe 'makes decision' on Premier League move

A Red Devils legend has suggested that his old club have become too reliant on the Portuguese playmaker

Paul Scholes has questioned where Manchester United would be without Bruno Fernandes after seeing him inspire the team's first home win of the Premier League season.

United picked up an unconvincing 1-0 win over West Brom at Old Trafford on Saturday night.

Fernandes scored the all-important winner from the penalty spot in the 56th minute, but only after holding his nerve to convert a retake, having seen his first effort saved illegally by Sam Johnstone as he jumped off his line before the ball was kicked.

West Brom were unfortunate not to salvage at least a point from the game as a combination of wasteful finishing and strong goalkeeping from David de Gea allowed the hosts to hold on for a crucial three points.

Slaven Bilic's side were also awarded a penalty of their own when Fernandes was adjudged to have fouled Conor Gallagher in the box early in the second, but the referee overturned his initial decision after checking the VAR monitors pitchside.

Fernandes' latest goal marked his 19th in 34 appearances for United since his €55 million (£49m/$65m) move from Sporting in January, and Scholes has suggested that the Portuguese is carrying Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side with his contribution in the final third.

"It was an ugly win. Hopefully, that will give them a bit of confidence," The Red Devils legend told BT Sport post-match.

"You do feel for West Brom. You do wonder where Man Utd would be without Fernandes. Before Bruno came in, United couldn’t create a chance."

Scholes' former team-mate Rio Ferdinand also heaped praise upon Fernandes, with the 26-year-old considered to be relishing his role as the main man in United's starting XI.

"Everything comes through him (Fernandes)," Ferdinand said.

"He’s a player who creates and takes on responsibility. It seems like he likes that."

Fernandes and Co. will be back in action when the Champions League resumes on Tuesday, with Istanbul Basaksehir set to arrive at Old Trafford for a Group H encounter.

The Red Devils will then start preparing for another crucial Premier League outing as a tough to trip to St Mary's to take on an in-form Southampton side comes into focus next weekend.

Chelsea Lost in the Right Way in Bogey Fixture at Goodison Park

The Brazilian tactician rubbishes claims he is not qualified to handle K’Ogalo in the league and Caf Champions League

Gor Mahia coach Roberto Oliveira Goncalves has hit out at those claiming he doesn’t have qualified papers by stating “I am a qualified coach with 25 years of experience.”

The Brazilian joined the Kenyan champions in August to replace Steven Polack but on Friday, the Confederation of African Football (Caf) wrote to the FKF questioning his qualifications and further warned that he will not be allowed to sit in the dugout in the Caf Champions League match against Armee Patriotique Rwandaise FC (APR) of Rwanda on November 28 in Kigali.

As if not enough, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) also came out to clarify that indeed, the former Rayon Sports tactician did not have qualification papers, with president Nick Mwendwa saying he will not be allowed to coach the team in the FKF Premier League set to kick off on November 28.

Oliveira has now hit back against the claims by stating he has coached for the last 25 years without any troubles and also hinted at quitting his coaching career in the next five years.

“Listen I don’t talk this about this story, but I prefer to talk about my players and my preparations and because two years or three years ago, I work in the Champions League with Rayon Sports in Rwanda," Oliveira told reporters after the team’s friendly against Posta Rangers on Saturday.\

"I qualified Stade Tunisien of Tunisia for Confederation Cup, okay I know sometimes in football it has more problems, but it is not a big problem.

“Because I have experience as an ex-player in the national team and also as a coach in 25 years and the last time here [in Nairobi with Rayon Sports], against Gor Mahia, I think everybody remembers very well about this game, and me too, because strong Gor Mahia was a strong team and we beat them 2-1.

“I accepted to come to Gor Mahia because they are a strong team, I trust too much Gor Mahia and I came here to win every time and I have a good relationship with the club chairman, we are friends, and I come here to give my maximum for the club and win matches and trophies.

“It is my history in football and after five years I stop my career as a coach but I still have four years to finish my job in football, and during three years in Rwanda I win three or four titles and reach Cup final, and it is my objective here to do well also.”

On confirming Oliveira did not have the correct qualifications, Mwendwa said: “After employing the coach, the law states that the clubs must submit their papers and documents to FKF and that must be accompanied by payment of Ksh100 000.

“They know all these because through club licensing process that is made very clear.

“Gor Mahia presented the coach’s papers and we then sent them to Caf and we have seen their reaction. Caf is very clear that even if the papers are put through the equalisation process, they do not meet the standards.

“That means he will not be on the bench for all Gor Mahia matches including the Champions League and the Premier League.

“He can only coach at the training ground or do some consultancy away from the touchline but he will never be allowed to be on the touchline during games.”

Caf has already outlined a possible ban that Gor Mahia are likely to face should they fail to abide by the orders.

ISL 2020-21: Manuel Marquez not afraid to put his money on youngsters like Rohit Danu & Akash Mishra

The Spanish coach is ready to bet on young players in his squad like Rohit Danu and Akash Mishra...

Hyderabad FC have roped in some exciting talent like Rohit Danu and Akash Mishra from the AIFF's (All India Football Federation) developmental team Indian Arrows. Both players found regular game-time in the previous I-League campaign and now they have an opportunity to prove their mettle in the ISL (Indian Super League) when Hyderabad take on Odisha on Monday evening.

"If the players we have, stay here for long, Hyderabad FC will have a strong future as a team. We have many young players like Rohit Danu, Akash Mishra, Biaka Jongte, Lalawmpuia and Sweden Fernandes among others. We are very satisfied with the players. We want them to show passion and if they play more games, they will go on to become important players for the team," stated coach Manuel Marquez.

The manager wants to start the campaign on a winning note, even though he is concerned about a curtailed pre-season due to the Coronavirus pandemic. He thinks that teams which have maintained their core will have an advantage this season.

"It is very difficult. This is why continuity in the squad will be very important for teams in the initial stages. Normally, we have six-to-seven weeks for pre-season but this season, we only have four weeks to prepare. Thus, the first few games will be important in building the team.

"The first game is very important because it is good to start with a victory. Some players might not play (in the opening game) but the plan is more or less the same for everyone. For Monday, we have to train on Saturday and Sunday. We will have light activation on the day of the game. We have been working very hard for the whole week."

The Nizams played a couple of friendlies as part of their preparations where they had a mixed bag of results. They won against FC Goa, drew with Bengaluru FC and lost to NorthEast United. But Marquez is not willing to break a sweat over the results in pre-season friendlies.

"Results are not that important in the pre-season. For example, ATKMB did not play friendlies during the pre-season but they have won the first match. I always tell my players that friendly games in pre-season are just another kind of training session. We are in a good mood at the moment. We are building a new team with new players. It is most important to arrive in the best condition for Monday’s game."

The former Las Palmas manager is aware of the stiff competition in ISL. Although he believes that there are no favourites, yet teams who have retained their core group of players will be at an advantage.

"The competition is tough. There are no favourite teams. It is difficult to predict the teams that will sit at the top or bottom of the table. The teams are at the same level with the same number of foreigners. The young Indian players are performing better as well. The teams with the most continuity in the squad will perform better," signed off Marquez.

Mamelodi Sundowns vs AmaZulu: Kick-off, TV channel, live score, squad news and preview

The defending PSL champions return to action against a tricky Usuthu at Loftus Versfeld

Mamelodi Sundowns would be keen to reclaim Premier Soccer League (PSL) top spot when they host AmaZulu on Sunday.

Victory for the third-placed Brazilians will see them return to the summit of the table and dislodge Swallows FC, given that Baroka FC do not win big away at Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila on the same afternoon.

Also going ahead of second-placed Orlando Pirates would be a huge priority for Downs.

With the fourth round of league matches being played this weekend, Sundowns are so far one of the six teams that are yet to taste defeat this season.

But 10th-placed AmaZulu stand in their way, seeking to upset the defending champions in Tshwane.

Downs have been sweating over the fitness of central midfielder Andile Jali, who pulled his hamstring in their last league match, a 2-0 win over Cape Town City on November 4.

Jali lasted 86 minutes in that game he emerged as Man of the Match and the hamstring strain saw him withdrawing from Bafana Bafana's Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sao Tome e Principe.

Sundowns have also been fretting for the availability of forward Kermit Erasmus who came back from international duty with an ankle injury.

But Saturday’s training images revealed Erasmus taking part in the team’s last workout before Sunday’s match.

The attacker has one league goal to his name so far in two matches.

Veteran midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala’s Usuthu debut has been delayed after he suffered thigh strain in training.

The 36-year-old’s injury comes as no surprise as he has spent more than a year without being involved in competitive action.

AmaZulu will also continue without striker Bongi Ntuli who was instrumental in saving them from relegation with 13 league goals last season.

Ntuli sustained a fifth metatarsal fracture during pre-season and is yet to feature for Usuthu this season.

Midfielder Siphesihle Maduna is also out with the same sort of injury as Ntuli’s.

Match Preview

Mamelodi Sundowns go into this match priding themselves of maintaining cleans sheets in five consecutive league matches.

That run stretch to last season and they last shipped in a goal in the PSL bio-bubble when they were stunned 1-0 by Baroka FC in August.

Going for five straight games games without conceding could be testimony of a steely defence and AmaZulu attackers might have some extra work to do to breach the Downs rearguard, which has stood tall in their two wins and a draw this term.

But having drawn 0-0 against Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila at home in their second league match of the season might offer some hope to AmaZulu that they might not return to Durban empty handed.

Usuthu appear to have capabilities of upsetting Downs after they frustrated Orlando Pirates to a 1-1 draw in their opening match of the campaign.

AmaZulu, who have one defeat so far this season, also arrive in Pretoria inspired after beating Black Leopards 2-0 in their last match.

'It has been our story' - Kaizer Chiefs' Hunt rues missed chances ahead of Soweto Derby

The 56-year-old tactician reflected on Amakhosi's performance as his side failed to hold on to a 2-1 lead

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Gavin Hunt was left to rue his side's missed chances following their draw with Lamontville Golden Arrows on Saturday afternoon.

The Soweto giants were held to a 2-2 draw by Abafana Bes'thende in an entertaining Premier Soccer League (PSL) match which was played at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Durban.

Chiefs came into the clash having failed to score in their last three matches across all competitions and Hunt is aware of his side's scoring woes

"Look in the first-half we had some excellent opportunities. We had three or four chances which should have scored. It has been our story," Hunt told SuperSport TV.

"We have [now] scored one goal in seven games. Today we scored from a set-piece, so, I am talking from open play. You can see the reason. We missed so many good chances."

Arrows opened the scoring after Zolani Nkombela was adjudged to have been fouled in the box by Chiefs hardman Willard Katsande after the duo went in for a 50/50 ball.

The resultant penalty was converted by Siboniso Conco a few minutes into the second-half and Hunt was unhappy with match referee Jethro Kwinda's decision to award the penalty.

"I don't know about the decision [to award the penalty] whether it was a penalty or not. It didn't look like it was a penalty," he said.

"It is what it is and always will be. So, yeah I am disappointed certainly."

Chiefs then grabbed two quick goals through Leonardo Castro to take a 2-1 lead, but second-half substitute Nduduzo Sibiya grabbed a late equalizing goal for Arrows.

"You can't be missing chances like that with only the goalkeeper to beat in the first half. Once we were 2-1 up we had the confidence," he continued.

"But we didn't maintain it for a couple of minutes, we could have seen it out or even created another one [goal]. It was a typical game of South African football.

"It becomes a ding-dong, it goes backwards and forward and the control goes in the game which is upsetting. We had some good opportunities. We shall live to fight another day."

When asked about the determination and fighting spirit displayed by his charges against Arrows, Hunt said: "We should not be talking about things like that.

"It should be a given from a football player or a football team. It is something that we don't have, but we need to get it."

Chiefs will be looking to snap their four-match winless run across all competitions when they face Swallows FC in a Soweto Derby clash on November 24.

ISL 2020-21: Goalkeeping an area of concern for SC East Bengal

The Gabon superstar has endured an underwhelming campaign so far but Marcelo Bielsa’s approach gives him an opportunity to thrive

While Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s 2020/21 season to date has been largely disappointing, the last fortnight was a real low for the Arsenal captain.

The Gabon star not only endured a 3-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium as the Gunners lost to Aston Villa before the international break, but the last week with the Panthers saw his season go from bad to worse.

The players from the Central African nation were due to play the Gambia on Monday, only to be delayed for several hours at the airport, prompting their top goalscorer to criticise the Confederation of African Football.

They fell to a defeat, thus losing top spot in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying group, and face a tricky last couple of games to make the showpiece in Cameroon.

Back in North London for a challenging run of fixtures over the Christmas schedule, the gloom that’s surrounded the skipper’s season has lingered. However, this weekend’s visit to Leeds United could be favourable for the club’s top scorer in the last two seasons.

Frankly, statistics for Auba have so far made for sombre reading. The 31-year-old’s Expected Goals of 1.7 places him 35th in the Premier League after eight games and 47th when penalties are excluded. He’s averaging fewer touches in the opposition box and hasn’t scored an open play league goal since the opening day success at Fulham.

Furthermore, the striker’s heatmap shows a major restriction to the left flank this term, a departure from previous seasons where he looked to move into central areas. This has reflected in a decline in shots per game which reads 1.1 - albeit after eight matches.

Last term, Aubameyang attempted 1.9 shots per match while he played 2 in his first full season at the club and 1.8 in 17/18 having joined in the winter window of Arsene Wenger’s final campaign.

These goalscoring challenges have prompted calls for Mikel Arteta to play the frontman down the middle, although this potential tweak would cause a major shift to how the Spaniard sets up his side.

There are also doubts about the one-time Golden Boot winner’s ability or lack of to play with his back to goal, while the grunt work required by Arteta in that position is unsuited to the forward’s strengths.

Be that as it may, it should be noted that there’s been a slight improvement in Aubameyang’s involvement in the side’s build-up thus far. Arsenal’s captain has been involved in 20 shot-creating actions, the highest volume in the side, although he does drop to third for SCAs per 90 behind Dani Ceballos and Willian.

Interestingly, the former Borussia Dortmund striker is also playing more key passes per game — 1.4 — than he managed in his two and a bit seasons in England — 0.7, 0.9 and 1.1 in 19/20, 18/19 and 17/18, respectively.

However, Gooners want their primary frontman on the receiving end of opportunities, not moonlighting as the team’s source of creativity, as he’s fashioned out more shooting opportunities per game than any teammate while no teammate outdoes him for big chances created (two).

So, why then could Sunday evening’s encounter with Leeds prove to be one for Auba to fancy regardless of the unease with Arsenal’s general approach in the final third?

For one, Bielsa’s high-risk football theoretically gives opponents a chance if they’re able to play beyond the unrelenting press of the Whites.

In the main, the Gunners fare reasonably well against pressing sides when playing out from the back. While Leeds’ relentless harrying would normally pose problems, the North Londoners have shown under Arteta to be adept at playing through the press and fashioning a presentable chance in the opponent’s box within seconds of beating the press.

This quality under the former Manchester City assistant manager has led to noteworthy goals in the FA Cup semi-final against the Cityzens, vs Liverpool in the Community Shield and away at Fulham in gameweek one, with Aubameyang twice a beneficiary of the London side’s new-found trademark.

The statistics also show that, before gameweek nine, Bielsa’s men had conceded the joint-highest goals in the top flight along with West Bromwich Albion (17) and no side in the division have outdone them for goals allowed per 90 (2.12).

In addition, the relatively average shot-stopping of Illan Meslier — his save percentage of 59.4 percent places him in the bottom five among goalkeepers this season — means opponents probably feel they don’t have to play brilliantly to beat the man between the sticks.

Two clean sheets all season further highlight how Leeds’ high-risk game is being picked apart by opponents. Even though Arsenal have failed to score an open-play goal since October 4 against Sheffield United, the mere fact another struggling attacking side in Crystal Palace were able to put four past Meslier would offer some encouragement to the three-time EPL champions.

Admittedly, placing the right context on the goals show that one came from an incredible Eberechi Eze free-kick and another from a wicked deflection that resulted in Helder Costa’s own goal. Throw in the disallowed Patrick Bamford goal that would have made it 1-1 and maybe Bielsa could claim his side were unlucky at Selhurst Park.

Still, the fact two of Leeds’ biggest defeats this season (4-1 against Leicester City and Palace) both came in games where the opponent looked to exploit their right flank, bodes well for Arteta’s men.

Given that Arsenal often look to create overloads down that very wing, Auba could also profit from the apparent weakness in the home side’s set up at Elland Road.

In truth, the Gunners have struggled to create promising openings consistently in the final third this season. Yet, a visit to West Yorkshire offers Aubameyang and co. a one-off game that could potentially play into the hands of the struggling visitors looking to bounce back from their Aston Villa humiliation before the break.

Everton vs Arsenal Preview: How to Watch on TV, Live Stream, Kick Off Time & Team News

The federation boss reveals to Goal what the champions for the 2020-21 season will pocket for lifting the new golden trophy

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has confirmed the eventual winners for the 2020-21 FKF Premier League will earn Ksh5million.

The federation president Nick Mwendwa has confirmed to Goal apart from the winning team pocketing the amount, the other 17 teams in the league will also share amongst themselves a similar amount at the end of the season.

“The winner of the FKF Premier League will take home a cool Ksh5million plus a golden trophy,” Mwendwa told Goal on Sunday.

"The other teams taking part in the same league will then share a similar amount amongst themselves, and this procedure was decided by the clubs.”

The 2020-21 campaign will be the first under the management of FKF after the federation refused to renew the contract of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL), who had managed the league on their behalf for the last decade.

Under the KPL, the winner of the league received Ksh4million, meaning under the FKF, the new champions will have an extra Ksh1million.

“It was decided by the clubs, and not the federation,” Mwendwa continued.

“We gave them [FKF Premier League clubs a free hand to come up with the structure of dishing out the prize and they decided if the winner takes home Ksh5million, then another Ksh5million can be shared amongst the remaining clubs.

“It means Ksh10million will be used towards awarding the teams taking part in the league.”

For the past two seasons, Gor Mahia, who had won the league, are yet to receive their prize money from the KPL, after title sponsors SportPesa withdrew support for the league.

Already the FKF has formed a Premier League Management Committee (PMC), which will help to run the top-flight and it will be chaired by KCB FC chairperson Azu Ogola alongside Dan Shikanda of AFC Leopards, Robert Maoga of Kariobangi SharksWestern Stima’s Laban Jobita, John Terry of Posta RangersSofapaka’s Elly Kalekwa and Dennis Gicheru of Wazito FC.

Despite the FKF setting November 28 as the date to kick off the new campaign, the government is yet to lift the ban on contact sports which includes football and rugby but Mwendwa is confident the league will kick-off as planned.

“The response from the Ministry of Sports is very positive. We have been engaging them for a while now and they don’t have any problems if we start the league,” added Mwendwa.

“All they wanted is to see was whether as a federation we are able to put all the Covid-19 measures in place to avoid the spread of the virus and we have given them the guidelines of what we plan to do for a smooth resumption.”

Already 14 clubs have signed the undertaking with FKF to start the league among them Kakamega Homeboyz, AFC Leopards, Bandari, Sofapaka, Western Stima, Bidco United, Nairobi City Stars, KCB, Nzoia Sugar, Kariobangi Sharks, Posta Rangers, Wazito, and Tusker.

'The situation was just too bad' - Kerala Blasters sporting director Karolis Skinkys explains Kibu Vicuna decision

The Spanish manager believes the current table doesn't lie and Jose Mourinho's side can't be taken lightly

Pep Guardiola believes Tottenham are Premier League title contenders, but the Manchester City manager feels this may be the most open title race since his arrival in England.

City suffered a 2-0 loss to Tottenham on Saturday, a result which sees them sit 11th in the table, eight points behind leaders Spurs but having played one less game.

With just 10 goals scored through eight league games, that is City's worst return since managing just six after the same number of matches in 2006-07.

Guardiola said Jose Mourinho's Spurs deserved to be considered title threats as he rued his side's lack of goals.

"They are top of the league. So obviously they are more contenders than anyone else right now," he told a news conference.

"Of course, there are a lot of points to play for, we're eight points down, we have one game less, but there are a lot of teams in front of us. We have to start winning games, if not that will not be possible, we know it. We have to try to win games, we know it.

"In terms of the game, I think we are not far away, but we struggle to score the goals right now, and it is not about particularly for one person or the other one. That is the reality, 10 goals...is not good enough."

Since arriving at City in 2016, Guardiola has helped the club win two Premier League titles – by 19 points in 2017-18 and one the following campaign.

The other two were won by Chelsea by seven points in 2016-17 and Liverpool by 18 last season.

Guardiola thinks this could be the most open title race since he arrived in England, with Spurs just five points clear of sixth-placed Aston Villa.

"Well, the first year, I remember Chelsea yeah, in the beginning it was so tight, but in the end they take the advantage. The second season, and the third, and the fourth, it was so clear for City two times and Liverpool once," he said.

"This looks like [the most open title race], but again it is nine [sic] games I think we have played so still a lot to play.

"We will see, you know playing a lot of games this season how it is going to happen. We will see."

City's return of 12 points from eight games is their lowest at this stage of a Premier League campaign since 2008-09, when they accumulated 10.

Beckham's son Romeo makes pro debut at Miami

Mumbai City won only the possession battle on Saturday...

Mumbai City had 65 per cent of the ball against NorthEast United in their first 2020-21 Indian Super League (ISL) match on Saturday. Excellent and expected right? Well, they also registered zero shots on target and lost the game 0-1.

It was a much-awaited peep into Sergio Lobera's new-look Islanders and the team news did not disappoint. The starting lineup was designed to dominate the game and that's what it did.

Both Adam Le Fondre and Bartholomew Ogbeche started upfront with Hugo Boumous in behind. Hernan Santana and Sarthak Golui formed the defence and Ahmed Jahouh seemed to have been instructed to do whatever he wants to do on the pitch - which was supposed to be a good thing for football lovers because he is such a delight to watch on the ball very often.

Jahouh took control of the midfield right from the off. He turned up in all areas of the pitch, looking to receive the ball, turn, look for a teammate's run and find him. And then he lost his composure just before the break and Mumbai CIty's gameplan was ruined.

If ISL creates a highlight reel of the first half between the two teams, it'd mostly be Jahouh receiving and producing passes. In the 43rd minute however, he lunged into a dangerous slide tackle on Khassa Camara near the centre circle and the punishment was deservedly a straight red card. It was a blow to a dominant Mumbai City.

Not that both teams were creating plenty of clear-cut chances - there were next to none in the first half. But had Mumbai City continued to dominate with 11 men, it is not ridiculous to conclude that they would have been more likely to break the deadlock. But it wasn't to be.

NorthEast United came out after the break and just turned out to be even more resilient than they already were. The midfield led by Camara and the defence led by Dylan Fox were very particular about denying Mumbai City space to operate. The likes of Mandar Rao Dessai and Hugo Bomous struggled to get free from an alert Ashutosh Mehta. Upfront, Luis Machado threatened with his runs and crosses. One such cross after the break found Fox in the box whose header hit the arm of Rowllin Borges. The result was a spot-kick.

Kwesi Appiah made no mistake from 12 yards and registered a goal on his ISL debut.

The fans who expected a strong comeback were disappointed as, even with the 41 minutes left for the game to end, City couldn't conjure a shot on target. They took 10 shots compared to Northeast's seven but none in the right direction. They also completed 552 passes compared to the winning team's 292.

As is the case with Kerala Blasters under Kibu Vicuna, it is a matter of players settling in and adapting to a new setup. Nus' men had no such issues with their approach as they were happy to drop deep to defend and showed excellent organisation and discipline at the back to keep out a top-heavy Mumbai City.

Fabio Paratici confirms Juventus plan to keep Cristiano Ronaldo

The Belgium international believes too many changes are being made to football after a frustrating loss

Kevin De Bruyne claimed he is baffled by the current interpretation of the handball rule after Manchester City once again fell foul of VAR against Tottenham.

Spurs dug in for a 2-0 win thanks to goals in each half from Son Heung-min and substitute Giovani Lo Celso, moving them to the top of the Premier League table after a performance which delighted boss Jose Mourinho.

By contrast, Mourinho's old rival Pep Guardiola finds his side languishing in 10th with 12 points from eight matches, although they were entitled to be frustrated when a marginal handball call went against Gabriel Jesus when he set up Aymeric Laporte for what briefly looked to be a first-half equaliser.

Referee Mike Dean consulted the pitchside monitor, with the replay showing the ball brushed Jesus' bicep on the hem of his shirt sleeve.

The latest guidance on handball from the International Football Association Board (IFAB) stipulates the "T-shirt line" should be used to differentiate between where the shoulder ends and the arm begins in terms of legal and illegal playing of the ball.

"I don't know the rules anymore honestly," De Bruyne told Sky Sports, with the same combination of Laporte and Jesus denied by VAR when the sides drew 2-2 at the Etihad Stadium last season – a match that followed the remarkable drama of the sides' 2019 Champions League quarter-final.

"I thought if it's above the arm here [above the bottom of the sleeve] that it’s not handball anymore. Everybody knows that it hits him here. I don’t know the rules.

"If you will listen tomorrow or the day after they will come on whatever channel and the referee will say it's a good decision, so it really doesn't matter.

"I've been playing professional football for 12 years and in the first nine years there were no rule changes. Now there are a lot of rule changes.

"I don't know why. Football is a nice game. The people making the rule changes need to be in the game."

Another familiar aspect of City's performance was combining a dominance of possession with a lack of cutting edge in attack and defensive fragility.

The visitors had 22 shots, with half of those blocked, to Tottenham's four. Son's goal was Spurs' only attempt of the first half and City had accounted for 66.4 per cent of possession by full-time.

Guardiola highlighted Laporte's decision to charge out of the defensive line to challenge Harry Kane in the build-up to an opening goal when Rodri and Joao Cancelo also appeared culpable, but De Bruyne believes he and his attacking colleagues must take a significant share of the blame.

"I think we played well but we missed that cutting edge," he said.

"To keep Tottenham to about three or four chances, that's quite good. But if you're not sharp enough in front of goal, which is happening lately, it's not enough."

Jesus and fellow striker Sergio Aguero have spent time on the sidelines this season, with the latter on the bench in north London alongside Raheem Sterling, who suffered an injury while on England duty.

"Obviously it's been up and down with the players going in and out," De Bruyne added. "It's very difficult for players to come back from injury and be sharp. It's difficult to find consistency.

"I think the first two thirds of the pitch we played well, but the end needs to be sharper. That will come, hopefully sooner than later."

Premier League crisis club of the week 2023/24 - Everton

Qatar are keen to learn from how Japan hosts the Olympics which is the first major sporting event in a post-Covid world...

In many ways, the Covid-19 pandemic has been a spoilsport around the globe, impacting many an event across multiple sports. Numerous events were cancelled or delayed, like Wimbledon, Euro 2020 and even the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

It has even posed quite a few challenges to the preparations being made for events coming up in the near future, including the 2022 World Cup in Qatar which is set to kick off in two years' time.

However, the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC), the organisation responsible for delivering the infrastructure for the World Cup, has taken the challenges in its stride and have not allowed them to halt progress.

Fatma Al-Nuaimi, Executive Communications Director of the SC, explains that being resilient and adaptive has helped them stay on track to deliver the World Cup on time. The stringent measures the Government of Qatar and the SC took to control the pandemic did help keep the World Cup projects tick along.

"Since we submitted the bid in 2010 the two things that we have learnt is to be resilient and be adaptive. We came through a lot of different challenges. When it comes to Covid-19, although it is very uncertain, we have come up with safety procedures for our workforce, as they are our top priority. We have been following the government protocols and have made sure that the work is not impacted," said Al-Nuaimi.

"When the pandemic hit, it made some changes to our plans this year. It did put some of the things on hold but we are trying to be adaptative and innovative to find new ways to communicate the progress and still excite the fans about this tournament.

"When the pandemic started we were distributing masks, hand sanitizers at all World Cup sites. We made sure to have isolation rooms at all official sites and the temperature was to be tested twice a day. Here in Doha, the pandemic has been largely controlled. We hope that in two years' time and with the news of 90 per cent vaccine trial success, things will, later on, turn out good," she added on a hopeful note.

Ever since Qatar won the hosting rights for the 2022 World Cup, the SC officials have been in conversations with major sporting events around the world, trying to pick the best practices and learn from them. Now with Covid-19 making an unwelcome appearance, Al-Nuaimi revealed that SC officials have been in conversations with the Tokyo Olympics organisers among other events.

The Tokyo Olympics is set to be held in 2021 now and will come right on the heels of the pandemic. In fact, it will be the first global event of that magnitude to be held after the pandemic struck. Al-Nuaimi explained that Qatar are in close conversations with those in Japan to learn and observe the challenges of holding a global event in such trying circumstances.

"We made sure actually that for every major event, we always have coordination with different federations, football organizing committees to actually start learning and adapting a lot of the lessons they have learnt in hosting. From the London Olympics to Brazil or Russia World Cups (2014 and 2018), we always make sure that we have a delegation that would go and learn from their organization.

"For sure for next year, we would have a delegation in Japan (for Tokyo Olympics) to learn – whether if held with Covid-19 protocols or hopefully by then, if Covid is already gone and things will be back to normal. I think there will be a lot of lessons learnt and a lot of offering that we can take from Japan before us hosting the World Cup."

Qatar themselves have experience of hosting tournaments during the pandemic, with the country playing hosts to the 2020 AFC Champions League. The domestic football league, Qatar Stars League, has also restarted in a bubble.

"There has been a lot of knowledge sharing during the pandemic like NFL (National Football League), AFC (Asian Football Confederation), Bundesliga and hosting a tournament during this period, bubble-to-bubble. J-League was one of the first to start in Asia once Covid-19 happened. We were the first in this region to kick-off with new health and safety procedures. By next year, there will be a lot of lessons learnt between both organizations," Al-Nuaimi said.

'Deliver Amazing' is the tagline for 2022 World Cup in Qatar and the SC are fully committed to doing so and ensure the fans who travel for the event will have a unique experience. The eight planned venues are all quite close to each other, making for a compact World Cup where fans and players do not have to travel huge distances to go from one venue to another. Each of those venues have cutting-edge features like the Advanced Cooling Tech and more.

Al-Nuaimi feels the fans are in for a unique, cultural experience in 2022.

"We have four stadiums completed, three of them inaugurated. Two of them where the contractor has completed work and another one will be completed in 2021. In 2021, we will be celebrating a lot of stadium inaugurations and utilise every opportunity that we have to test the venues operationally and to make sure that they are ready.

"What differentiates this World Cup is the compact nature of it.  Teams and fans will not have to travel much to see their favourite teams. The closest stadium is just five minutes away and the farthest is just one hour away. Fans can enjoy themselves in the desert, watch a football match and taste the Arabian food that we have here. We want to offer a unique cultural experience to the fans."

'I want to continue at East Bengal but cannot wait forever' - Debjit Majumder anxious over club vs investor deadlock

The Norwegian prodigy believes the club's newest youngster will take the world by storm

Erling Haaland declared Youssoufa Moukoko is "the biggest talent in the world right now" after he made his Borussia Dortmund debut on Saturday.

Just one day after his 16th birthday, Moukoko was brought on against Hertha Berlin in the 85th minute with his side 5-2 up and became the Bundesliga's youngest ever player in the process.

Haaland, who was replaced by Moukoko, is widely regarded as one of the game's brightest prospects and was recently awarded the Golden Boy award

The Norway star is adamant however that Moukoko has the potential to usurp him - noting that age is very much on the teenager's side.

"I think he’s the biggest talent in the world right now. 16 years and one day, that’s quite amazing. He has a big career ahead of him," Haaland told ESPN

Asked about his own talent in comparison, he added: “I’m over 20 years, so I’m getting old now, so that’s how it is."

Moukoko has already represented Germany at U20 level and was playing for Dortmund's U17 side at the age of just 12.

Dortmund manager Lucien Favre was short of players on Saturday and hopes Moukoko's first taste of senior football can spur him on to reach his full potential.

“He’s trained with us now for 14 days. Seven or eight players were away on international duty. It was 5-2 and it was good for him to play his first Bundesliga game but of course he has to keep working," Favre said.

"He’s very, very young. We have a lot of attacking players, a lot who haven’t played today.”

On the match itself, which Dortmund won 5-2 after trailing 1-0 at half-time, Favre added: “We have to keep playing this way, play the ball forward more, make more runs into the box and the team did that immediately in the second half.”

Favre's side are currently second in the Bundesliga after eight matches - just one point behind league leaders Bayern Munich, who were held to a 1-1 draw with Werder Bremen on Saturday.

Dortmund next face Club Brugge in the Champions League on Tuesday night before backing up in the Bundesliga against FC Koln.

Crystal Palace 0-0 Newcastle: Player ratings as Eagles hold Champions League hopefuls

The Argentine's side is flying high right now but he's keeping their feet firmly on the ground

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone could not hide the enthusiasm brought on by Saturday's 1-0 win over Barcelona, though he dismissed the idea that he can see similarities with his 2013-14 title-winning team.

Los Colchoneros produced a solid display at the Wanda Metropolitano to defeat Ronald Koeman's misfiring Barca and go up to second in La Liga, only behind Real Sociedad – who have played a game more – by virtue of scoring two goals fewer.

That victory extended Atletico's unbeaten run to 24 games in La Liga and opened up a nine-point gap between themselves and Barca.

With defending champions Real Madrid also failing to inspire much confidence, having rarely impressed this season and been held by Villarreal earlier on Saturday, Atletico look like many people's favourite for the title.

Atletico have not won it since 2013-14, their first for 18 years at the time, but Simeone is keeping his feet on the ground.

When asked if he saw similarities with his previous title-winning team, Simeone told reporters: "No, I don't see them."

But Atletico's improvement from 2019-20 is not lost on the Argentinian, who added: "The most important things we value about the growth of footballers from last season to this one is being seen.

"We are working better on the pitch, we are being more complicit to share what the team needs and we see it.

"We need everyone. Felipe, who played much more continuously last season; Renan Lodi, who will surely be important; [Geoffrey] Kondogbia enters little by little; Saul [Niguez] is finding his best form; [Angel] Correa is showing extraordinary growth, not to mention Joao Felix or [Diego] Costa's enthusiasm when he came on.

"The group generates enthusiasm for me, because I see them wanting to look for important things, game by game."

The win saw Atletico end a run of 20 consecutive La Liga matches without a victory over Barcelona, while Simeone had not beaten them in 17 previous league meetings.

But, despite the momentousness of such a victory, Simeone remained reserved and dismissed its importance.

"Football is game by game," he said. "Sometimes we have to win and sometimes we have to lose, in the previous games [against Barca] we had always been close to winning, aside from in the Supercopa in Saudi Arabia.

"Today we won, that does not change the plan of what is sought. I'm very happy with the team's effort."

Why Juventus have been handed a Serie A points deduction

The talented footballer revealed that the sheer pride of representing his state prompted him to extend his contract with Odisha FC…

Shubham Sarangi was one of the bright spots for Odisha FC last season in the Indian Super League (ISL), with his performances at right-back garnering praise.

The versatile footballer who started his career as a striker was converted into a right-winger during 2018-19 season by then Odisha and erstwhile Delhi Dynamos manager Josep Gombau. Later that season though, impressed by his defending abilities, the Spaniard had changed his position and used him as a right full-back.

Ahead of the 2020-21 season, Sarangi decided to commit his future to the club for three more years and the player explained that representing his native club is a motivation in itself which prompted him to sign the contract extension.

“Being a local player and getting the opportunity to represent your state at any level is great. It gives you that extra motivation. It makes you feel attached to the place and the people. The people in Odisha are extremely passionate about the game. The extra love and motivation of Odisha fans made me commit my future to the club,” Sarangi told Goal.

2020 has been a difficult year for everybody across the globe primarily due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Indian football had also come to a halt after the conclusion of the ISL 2019-20 season on March 17.

The young Odisha defender is glad that football will start again in the country and suggested that he is very eager to take to the field.

“It has been a very long break due to the pandemic and many activities including football were put to a halt. We have been waiting for this time for long. I am very excited for the season and can’t wait to play football again.”

The 20-year-old suggested that the team is having a very fruitful pre-season training under new coach Stuart Baxter and he is hopeful that the addition of quality foreign players this season would help them to make it to the play-offs.

“The pre-season has been very good so far and the team gelling quite well. The coach has brought a new philosophy and we are trying to implement that. We are giving our best in each and every session and trying to improve as a team and do well in the upcoming season.

“We have a very good foreign contingent this season. I feel right from the backline to the attack, the squad is really good and balanced. Last season we had missed out on the play-offs narrowly. The main target of the team this season is to be in the play-offs. Individually my target is to provide as many assists as possible and create chances.”

Sarangi also mentioned that he is very keen to play under a reputed coach like Stuart Baxter and has been following the coach’s words diligently in the training sessions.

“He (Stuart Baxter) is a great coach. He has managed so many teams, has experience of working in South Africa and Japan. He has vast experience and as a player, you look forward to getting coached by such a personality.

“Since day one of training, we have been listening to every single instruction of his. Even when we were at our homes, he used to stay in touch with every player and conduct tactical classes. He has been wonderful and each and every player has the urge to prove themselves under him,” said the right-back.

What happened to Lucas Piazon?

The youngster showed a lot of potential with Indian Arrows and now wants to prove himself in ISL...

Hyderabad FC's Rohit Danu is regarded as one of the youngsters with big potential. He has shown glimpses of brilliance during his stint with Indian Arrows in I-League and now he must replicate his form in the Indian Super League (ISL).

His career has been punctuated with injuries and niggles and the youngster knows that to have an impact and improve as a player he must get more minutes on the pitch. He even missed the start of the 2019-20 season but came back strongly in January to reinvigorate Arrows' attack. Hyderabad was quick to rope him in the squad following his exploits with the AIFF (All India Football Federation) developmental team, and Danu is itching to prove his worth.

"When I moved from Indian Arrows to Hyderabad FC, I was mentally prepared and motivated to face the challenges. I have always wanted to play to my full potential, for the team. To play regularly, to score goals, to create chances and help my team win is always on my mind.

"The ISL is a much more professional league when compared to the I-League. The style of play is also different and playing under a Spanish coach is helping me to improve a lot, as a player," stated the forward in a chat with Goal.

Every youngster wants to hone his talent under the guidance of an experienced coach and in Hyderabad, he has the perfect mentor in Manuel Marquez. The Spaniard has been in the trade for close to two decades and has been at the helm of teams like Las Palmas and Espanyol Reserves. And Danu is trying to make the most of each training session under the 52-year-old.

"Manolo Marquez is an experienced Spanish coach and training under him is helping me to get stronger and better technically, as well as tactically. The way he guides is so commendable. He helps us learn new things on and off the field. He is very focused and is always helpful."

Danu also credited AIFF for the exposure trips that were arranged by the federation to lock horns against stronger opponents around the world. He believes that those tournaments helped him further realise his deficiencies and work on them to get better.

"I have to say, where I am today as a player, AIFF has helped me a lot and for this, I am always grateful to them. The exposure trips organised by AIFF helped us to see new things and learn from them. These trips help us to acquire vast knowledge and experience and allows us to focus more on the qualities we lack and identify the areas of our game we need to work on. So, these trips have been crucial to my development as a player," he said.

The 18-year-old is comfortable with the ball and has a delicate first touch which gives him more time to think about his next move. He can also combine well in the attacking third and is versatile enough to play in any position in a front-three. But he still needs to work on his goal-scoring skills and be more clinical.

"As a player, there are many areas where I have to work on. Especially on my attacking side, I have to work on my speed and be sharper. I also have to work on improving my finishing, and try to be more effective in front of goal."

With more experience under his belt, Danu might master the art of scoring goals but he already has an enviable record. He scored against Aizawl to become the youngest ever goalscorer in the then top division of Indian football.

In this season he must find his scoring boots if Hyderabad needs to better their performances from the previous season. They had a dismal debut campaign and were toothless in the scoring department which ultimately saw them finish last on the table.

"My target for the upcoming season is obviously to help Hyderabad FC to a strong finish in the 2020-21 ISL campaign. I know that I have to fight for my place in the side because there is so much competition and quality in the squad."

The Nizams have got Aridane Santana, Joel Chianese and Francisco Sandaza in attack and if Danu steps up his game, the team might finally exorcise the ghosts of the past.

Diouf: Ex-Liverpool forward named Guediawaye FC sporting director

The 20-year-old striker drew within a single strike of Lewandowski at the top of the Bundesliga scoring charts after an extraordinary haul in Berlin

Erling Haaland has revealed that he gave Lucien Favre a piece of his mind on Saturday - because he believed he could have added to his tally of four goals against Hertha Berlin

The Norwegian took centre-stage for his club as they breezed past the hosts in an impressive 5-2 comeback victory.

Hertha went ahead after 33 minutes through Matheus Cunha, a goal that seemed to spark Dortmund - and especially Haaland - into action after a slow start in their first match back from the international break.

Haaland went on to score a 15-minute hat-trick after the break, adding a fourth 79 minutes in after Raphael Guerreiro netted to join him on the scoresheet and seconds after Cunha briefly took the game back to 4-2 from the penalty spot with his second.

That proved to be the striker's last action in the game as he made way for 16-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko, who became the Bundesliga's youngest-ever player

But after the game, and with tongue firmly in cheek, Haaland insisted he had more to give - and told coach Favre as much.

"To be honest after the game, [Favre] asked me how many I scored. He asked me: Did you score three?” Haaland joked to ESPN.

“I said: 'No, four. Only four because you subbed me out.'

"So I’m a bit mad at him right now but that’s how it is."

Favre later confirmed Haaland's version of events, while paying tribute to BVB for turning things round in spectacular fashion after a tough first 45 minutes.

"It’s true because I am not just watching the goals, I am watching the passes too," the coach admitted to ESPN.

“[I told the players at half-time] we have to keep playing this way, play the ball forward more, make more runs into the box and the team did that immediately in the second half.”

Saturday's emphatic win took Dortmund within one point of Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich, who were held 1-1 by Werder Bremen on the same day.

Haaland, meanwhile, has drawn within one goal of current top scorer Robert Lewandowski, with the prolific pair boasting 10 and 11 goals respectively after just eight rounds of the 2020-21 season.
