Chelsea's Mendy admits Cech is the best person to prepare him for Champions League penalties

The Senegal goalkeeper is ready to link up with the Blues legend for some spot-kick lessons in the crucial stage of the European tournament

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has named Petr Cech as the ‘best person’ for him to talk to in preparation for penalties in the final stages of the Uefa Champions League.

Nine years ago, Cech produced a masterclass display between the sticks as the Blues claimed their first title in the elite European tournament with a penalty shoot-out win over Bayern Munich after a 1-1 draw.

During the match, the former Arsenal goalkeeper stopped an Arjen Robben’s penalty in the extra-time and he later saved Ivica Olic and Bastian Schweinsteiger's efforts in the penalty shoot-out.

Chelsea are on the verge of advancing into the Champions League final after playing out a 1-1 draw with Real Madrid in the first-leg of their semi-final fixture on Tuesday but Mendy is yet to seek the support of Cech ahead of the penalties scenario.

“I haven’t spoken with him about it, actually. I have spoken to him about a lot, but not that,” Mendy told the club website.

“I have memories of the penalties he saved for Chelsea, of course, because they helped the club win the Champions League, so it’s clear he will be the best person to speak to in preparation!"

Mendy has been impressive for the Blues since his permanent signing from Ligue 1 club Rennes in September.

The 29-year-old has kept 22 cleans sheets in all competitions so far, including seven clean sheets in his first 10 Champions League appearances.

When asked about his debut season in England, the Senegal said: It’s gone well, but it’s not finished! I’m proud, because at the moment it’s a good season for me and for the team. We are still in the FA Cup, the Champions League and the top four for the Premier League.

“There have been a lot of games, and maybe good things are coming. I’m happy but it’s not finished. There are a few weeks left with huge targets for us. I am focused on finishing the season well and continuing to work on my development, and not thinking about what has gone before.”

Chelsea face Fulham in a Premier League fixture on Saturday before they host Zinedine Zidane's Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge on May 5.

'The penalty is not a penalty!" - Emery rubbishes Arsenal spot kick in 'deserved' Villarreal victory

The Yellow Submarine boss was left irked by the call to award a spot-kick for a foul on Buyako Saka, but believes his side can still get the job done

Villarreal manager Unai Emery hailed his side's efforts in their Europa League semi-final first leg victory over Arsenal on Thursday, but bemoaned the decision to award a spot kick to the Gunners for a crucial away goal.

The Yellow Submarine ran out 2-1 victors on home turf at El Madrigal to take the advantage into next week's reverse fixture at the Emirates Stadium, thanks to first-half goals from Manu Trigueros and Raul Albiol.

But Nicolas Pepe was able to convert a second-half penalty with just over a quarter-hour left on the clock after Buyako Saka was deemed to have been felled by Manu Trigueros inside the penalty area, in a call that the coach was quick to rubbish after the game.

What did Emery say?

"The penalty is not a penalty," the former Gunners boss told BT Sport, in reference to the incident where Saka went down after apparently tripping over Trigueros' ankle. "We deserved this victory."

Emery added in his post-game press conference that the call was a "very important refereeing error and also, with VAR, you can see it."

The Spaniard - who led Sevilla to a hat-trick of Europa League triumphs during his previous spell in La Liga - added that he will expect more of the same from his side when he makes his return to north London for the second leg next week, even though they failed to add to their first-half haul at home.

"We had chances to score the third goal and that was our plan," he added to BT Sport. "We will play there with the same plan, to control and show our personality.

"We developed a plan [today] to take the victory and achieved it. It’s a victory, and it allows us to continue in the second leg. We have to go there to score a goal."

The bigger picture

Pepe's late response is enough to likely leave Arsenal - who spent a chunk of the second half at a man disadvantage following Dani Ceballos' second yellow card - hopeful that they can turn the tide in their favour on home soil.

The bonus of an away goal means that they need score only once at the Emirates Stadium in a week's time to secure progression to the final in Gdansk - providing that they keep Villarreal at bay for the duration of the game.

Emery will have no room for sentimentality when he returns to the side who duly dismissed him a handful of months after he took them to a Europa League final - and he will know that victory would boost his own side's fledgling hopes for European action at the expense of his old club next term.

Villarreal currently lie in seventh in La Liga, which would qualify them for the newly created Europa Conference League, while Arsenal look poised to miss out on European football entirely next season unless they can win the Europa League and seal a Champions League berth.

Arteta happy with Lacazette transfer gossip

The Norwegian head coach defended his in-game decision making after seeing his team take a giant step towards the Europa League final

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hit back at Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves for criticising his midfield selection following Manchester United's rout of Roma.

United put one foot in the Europa League final by thrashing Roma 6-2 at Old Trafford in the first leg of their last-four tie on Thursday night.

Solskjaer's side were good value for their comprehensive victory in the end, but had to recover from a 2-1 deficit after being overrun in midfield in the first half.

What's been said?

Former United stars Scholes and Hargreaves, who were both covering the game as pundits for BT Sport, advised the Norwegian to ring the changes at the interval after he started with Pogba, Fred and Scott McTominay in the middle of the park.

Solskjaer was relayed their comments in his post-match interview with the same broadcaster, and responded by insisting that he stuck with the most balanced team possible to pick up a positive result.

"It's easy up there thinking who should play ... but who should not play?" the United boss asked BT Sport. "That's a very good team, it worked really good against Tottenham. Mason Greenwood should be disappointed not to be playing but it's about balance.

"Maybe those two should try to leave players out and pick a team with balance. We know we have got creative players who can create big moments.

"Paul Pogba's position today was very good in that position, he's allowed some freedom. He's got the foundation behind him. The difference today is we took most of our chances.

"The character showed that they came back and didn't lose their heads. Maybe five or 10 minutes at the end of the first half, we didn't look great but we got ourselves together.

"The two goals are junior, schoolboy errors that shouldn't happen at this level."

United run rampant in Europe

The Red Devils took the lead at Old Trafford after just nine minutes, with Bruno Fernandes racing through to finish off a slick passing move after being played in by Edinson Cavani.

However, Roma hit back via a Lorenzo Pellegrini penalty before Edin Dzeko tapped home from close range to complete a stunning first-half turnaround, leaving Solskjaer stone faced in the dugout.

United regrouped at the break and took their game up a notch after the restart, with Cavani quickly bringing them back level with a brilliant first-time finish following another swift counter-attack.

Cavani doubled his account when he reacted quickest to a rebounded Aaron Wan-Bissaka cross just after the hour mark, and Fernandes made it four with a penalty in the 71st minute.

A powerful header from Pogba and a late Greenwood strike rounded off the scoring for the hosts, who now have plenty of breathing space heading into the second leg at Stadio Olimpico next week.

Asked if United can now start looking ahead to a final date against either Arsenal or Villarreal, Solskjaer added: "No I don't feel the job is done but it was a good job done. We did well but we know they have quality.

"They scored two goals from the two chances we gave them. They didn't have loads of chances against Ajax [in the quarter-finals]. The second half was very good."

'We are better than them even with 10 men' - Saka bullish on Arsenal comeback after first-leg Villarreal defeat

The English winger thinks the Gunners are capable of beating anyone at their best despite the loss in Spain

Bukayo Saka was bullish on Arsenal's chances of a comeback in the Europa League semi-finals after their first leg defeat at Villarreal as he declared "we are better than them, even with 10 men".

Arsenal were beaten 2-1 at El Madrigal on Thursday night, with Manu Trigueros and Raul Albiol scoring for the hosts before Nicolas Pepe grabbed a late away goal for the Gunners.

Mikel Arteta's played with ten men for the final 30 minutes after Dani Ceballos was sent off, but still managed to find a way back into the game, leaving Saka encouraged for the second leg at Emirates Stadium.

What's been said?

"There are a lot of positives in the second half, it's a semi-final and to start the game like that... we didn't create anything, were passive, lost every duel," the Arsenal winger told BT Sport post-match.

"I'm happy in the second half we picked ourselves and have given us a chance at the Emirates. We showed we are better than them, even with 10 men, so it is up to us.

"When we play properly we can beat anyone."

Arsenal falter in Spain

The Gunners made the worst possible start against Villarreal after Trigueros fired in a low shot past German goalkeeper Bernd Leno with just five minutes on the clock.

Unai Emery saw his team increase their advantage just before the hour mark, with Raul Albiol turning the ball home at the back post after meeting a headed flick-on from a corner.

Arsenal's task was made all the more difficult when Ceballos was shown a second yellow card early in the second period, but Saka won a penalty for the visitors in the 70th minute which Pepe dispatched to keep the tie alive.

Etienne Capoue was also given a red card moments later, but the Gunners were unable to find an equaliser and will now have to score in the reverse fixture to have any hope of progressing to the final.

What's next?

Arsenal will now prepare for a trip to Newcastle United on Sunday, with the second leg of their tie at Villarreal scheduled to take place in north London four days later.

'Who annoyed Manchester United?' - Fans amazed after Red Devils run riot against Roma

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men fought back to earn a convincing first-leg advantage against the Italian visitors at Old Trafford

Fans have been left amazed following Manchester United’s 6-2 thrashing of Roma in a Uefa Europa League semi-final game on Thursday.

Bruno Fernandes got the visitors off to a flying start in the ninth minute but goals from Lorenzo Pellegrini and Edin Dzeko put the Red Devils behind at half-time as Roma held a 2-1 lead.

After the restart, Manchester United ran riot at Old Trafford as Edinson Cavani's double and goals from Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood turned the encounter around in their favour.

Thursday's result was the first time a team scored as many goals in a major European semi-final since Real Madrid in the 1964 European Cup and the resounding victory boosted United's chances of progressing into the Europa League final.

Immediately after the game, football enthusiasts took to social media praised Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men for their 'entertaining' and 'amazing' second-half performance.

'I don't know how to tackle!' - Pogba admits shortcoming after conceding Roma penalty

The Man Utd midfielder's sloppy moment in the Europa League semi-final has forced some tongue-in-cheek introspection

Paul Pogba has acknowledged his tackling form needs work after an attempt to make a sliding block in the Europa League semi-final first leg on Thursday gifted Roma a penalty.

The Manchester United midfielder forgot to keep his hands down as he went in for the first-half challenge, and the cross he was trying to stop struck his palm. However, he went on to score in an eventual 6-2 thrashing and was able to joke about the incident after the game.

After entering half-time down a goal, the Red Devils hit five past Roma over the final 45 minutes to close in on a trip to the competition's final in Poland.

What has been said?

"Just don't tackle," Pogba told BT Sport of the conceded penalty. "I don't know how to tackle - why should I tackle? That's my problem! I try to tackle and be the English guy. I need to practise more. I need to practise to tackle without arms. It's unlucky. I've been unlucky a lot this season with penalties.

"In the first half we had two mistakes and conceded two goals. We were a bit all over the place after the second goal.

"At half-time we said let's do the right things, let's do the right things, simple things. The manager spoke. We were all motivated to go and score as many goals as possible.

"The result is positive but it's not finished. We will have to stay focused and play a nice game with the same mentality."

The bigger picture

Manchester United are likely to finish in a Champions League place in the Premier League, meaning a European trophy this campaign would not be needed to reach that stage in 2021-22.

However, the Europa League still represents a significant piece of silverware and would be a tangible accomplishment for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men to take from a sometimes turbulent campaign.

Pogba's continued involvement, handball notwithstanding, is also good news for the Red Devils, who earlier this season appeared destined for divorce with the playmaker.

He has been noticeably upbeat in recent months as the squad has taken control of second place in the Premier League and advanced to the brink of the Europa League final.

Man Utd and Cavani make history with Roma hammering in Europa League semi-final

The Red Devils picked up a 6-2 victory in the first leg at Old Trafford, with the Uruguayan frontman leading their charge

Manchester United and Edinson Cavani both made history on Thursday as the Red Devils hammered Roma in their Europa League semi-final.

United ran out 6-2 winners in the first leg of the tie at Old Trafford, leaving Roma with a mountain to climb in the reverse fixture at Stadio Olimpico next week.

Cavani and Bruno Fernandes bagged a brace each, while Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood also got in the act as the Red Devils equalled an impressive mark in European competition dating back 57 years.

United join Madrid in history books

United have become the first team since Real Madrid to score six goals in a continental semi-final, with the Blancos having achieved the same feat during their run to European Cup glory in 1964.

The Manchester outfit also netted six times in Europe for the first time since beating Roma 7-1 in the Champions League back in 2007, and can now start dreaming of winning their first major trophy in four years.

Record-breaking Cavani

Cavani's latest double saw him increase his haul of goals in a United shirt to 12 from 33 games in all competitions, and he is also now the oldest player to score twice in the semi-finals of a European competition since 2005.

Philip Cocu scored that double for PSV against AC Milan in the Champions League, but he was 113 days older than Cavani, who turned 34 in February.

What's next?

The Red Devils will now have to refocus ahead of a Premier League meeting with Liverpool on Sunday, which they must win to stay in sight of runaway leaders Manchester City.

Solskjaer's men will travel to Rome for the second leg of their Europa League encounter four days later, before preparations begin for a trip to Aston Villa on May 9.

Hasenhuttl warns Southampton of Iheanacho's threat ahead of Leicester City clash

The Saints boss has urged his side to be wary of the Nigeria international when they take on the Foxes at St Mary's Stadium

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has warned his side of Kelechi Iheanacho’s possible threat when they square off against Leicester City in Friday’s Premier League game.

The centre-forward is arguably enjoying his best season at King Power Stadium, having previously struggled to establish himself.

He has been in terrific form for the Foxes in the current campaign, scoring 17 goals and providing six assists in 33 appearances across all competitions.

Ahead of their encounter with Brendan Rodgers’ men, Hasenhuttl has praised the Nigeria international and urged the Saints to be wary of the danger the attacker could pose to his side.

"He [Iheanacho] did a good job in the last game, he has one chance and this chance was a goal so the rest of the game I didn't see him to be honest,” Hasenhuttl said in a pre-match press conference.

"You must be always careful, don't give him the chance in and around the box, he has a very good finish, self-confident at the moment.

"Premier League teams have strikers that are strong and they can hurt you."

The 24-year-old was recently praised by former Rangers striker Ally McCoist for always making the most of the opportunities that come his way after Timo Werner missed a glorious chance in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Real Madrid in Tuesday's Champions League game.

“If you’re in the Real Madrid dressing room, it’s a great save. You’re patting your goalkeeper on the back, saying ‘What a save, kept us in it,’ because it is a good save,” McCoist said .

“But from a Chelsea point of view, when the ball gets headed back to him by Mount, I can see him thinking about it.

“I can see him thinking about that chance, whereas [Kelechi] Iheanacho doesn’t think about it, if he’s on a run. Iheanacho just comes in and doesn’t think about it. He might still miss it, but he just comes in and just goes bang, does it naturally and that’s it.

“It might sound a crazy thing to say, I can see a slight split-second hesitancy in Werner and that’s me watching him thinking about it.”

Iheanacho will hope to increase his tally against Southampton and help his side continue to be in contention for the Champions League next season.

'Chukwueze is what Arsenal fans think Pepe is' - Twitter in awe of Villarreal winger

The Nigerian winger was in blistering form as the Yellow Submarine tackle Mikel Arteta's side on Thursday

Football enthusiasts are in awe of Samuel Chukwueze's quality after his fine start to Thursday's Uefa Europa League semi-final clash between Villarreal and Arsenal.

Chukwueze dazzled in Villarreal's attack in the opening 45 minutes and he helped the Spanish club cruise to a two-goal lead before the break.

After scoring Villarreal's only goal in their 2-1 defeat to Barcelona on Sunday, the Super Eagles star provided the assist as Manu Trigueros opened the scoring for the hosts in the fifth minute on Thursday.

A few minutes later, Raul Albiol doubled Villarreal's lead but Nicolas Pepe's second-half strike reduced the deficit for Arsenal.

Amazed by Chukwueze's blistering run and contributions in the game, fans across social media suggested that the Nigerian forward could be the kind of player the Gunners think they have in Pepe and Bukayo Saka.

Transfer news and rumours LIVE: Ramos draws closer to Real Madrid exit

The Dutchman couldn't understand why he was dismissed in the second half of the 2-1 defeat at Camp Nou

Ronald Koeman insisted that he was "disrespected" by the fourth official during Barcelona's loss to Granada and was left bemused after being shown a red card.

Barca missed the chance to go top of La Liga after being beaten 2-1 by Granada at Camp Nou on Thursday night.

Lionel Messi opened the scoring only for Darwin Machis and Jorge Molina to complete a second-half turnaround for the visitors, with Koeman forced to watch the last portion of the game from the stands after being dismissed by match referee Pablo Gonzalez.

What happened?

Machis drew Granada level with a cool finish in the 63rd minute of the game, with the initial move having started from deep in their own half after Antonine Griezmann gave away a free kick.

Koeman was seen protesting to the fourth official following the goal, and Gonzalez ran from the far side of the pitch to show the Dutchman a red card after consulting with his colleague via his earpiece.

What's been said?

Koeman pleaded his innocence post-match while pointing the finger at the fourth official for his role in the incident.

"I don't get it at all. I didn't say anything, I didn't insult him. I spoke to the fourth referee and he disrespected me," said the Barca boss at his post-game press conference.

"I was not wrong, because according to the referee report I disrespected the fourth referee and for me, it is not like that. A lack of respect is insulting.

"I haven't used ugly words, not once. If they're going to put things I haven't said I'll have to do something. I don't understand."

Asked to assess his team's latest performance, Koeman added: "We have to accept that we lost today. It is really tough because it was a good opportunity to win tonight.

"The defeat was mainly due to a lack of concentration in defence during Granada's two goals.

"It is a very disappointing result. It is a very hard defeat because we controlled our own destiny, but we still have five games left."

The state of play in La Liga

Barcelona stayed third in the Spanish top-flight standings after suffering their sixth defeat of the 2020-21 campaign, just behind arch-rivals Real Madrid due to their inferior head-to-head record.

Atletico Madrid are still sitting top by two points with only five games left to play, including a crucial clash against Barca at Camp Nou on May 8.

Koeman admitted his players were frustrated in the dressing room following their surprise loss to Granada, but also stressed the importance of getting back on track quickly away at Valencia this Sunday.

"I spoke to several players after the game. They are very disappointed," he said. "It is very important to win again, because Sunday's game is crucial for our aspirations to win the championship.

"We have to learn from what we have done wrong, we have to put energy into it, improve things and move on.

"There is still a lot at stake and the level has to be very high."

Andre Ayew: Swansea City uncertain of Ghana attacker's availability for Derby County showdown

Jack Army manager Steve Cooper has delivered a new update on the Ghanaian’s fitness ahead of Saturday’s Championship fixture

Swansea City deputy captain Andre Ayew is an injury doubt for the club’s penultimate Championship season clash with Derby County on Saturday.

The Ghana international is struggling to shake off a hamstring problem during a clash with Wycombe Wanderers three matchdays back.

After sitting out the subsequent 1-0 loss to Queens Park Rangers, the 31-year-old made a scoring return against Reading last week, a match in which he suffered a relapse according to Swansea City boss Steve Cooper.

"I think we need to get the balance right. There’s still two games left to play. A lot of good can come out from that in terms of results and performances. A lot of players are in good form and we want to keep the momentum going,” said the manager, as reported by his club’s official website on Thursday.

"There’s a few lads like Andre [Ayew] who’s struggling a little bit physically that we need to be careful with. He wasn’t 100 per cent against Reading, and in an ideal world we wouldn’t have used him. He’s had a little setback, but he’s not completely out for Saturday – if he is then he should be fine for Watford.

"Resting players, it’ll only be because they medically can’t play, it won’t be because they physically can’t play.

“There’s two games to play and we want to play well and win those. There’s two weeks of work which we will respect, then we’ll focus on the play-offs.”

Ayew’s return against Reading was emphatic as it could be as he did not only register a goal but also made a significant contribution with a sweet backheel nutmeg which led to Swansea’s other strike on the day.

The 2-2 draw against The Royals secured The Jack Army a place in the Championship play-off round where they will battle Brentford, Bournemouth and Barnsley for the last available promotion ticket for the Premier League.

The Ghanaian currently stands as the side’s top scorer so far this term, having made 42 league appearances and scored 16 times. His goal tally is two better than Jamaica striker Jamal Lowe.

Gradel bags assist, Kayode in action as Sivasspor edge Yeni Malatyaspor

The Ivory Coast and the Nigeria internationals made key contributions for the Braves at Yeni 4 Eylul Stadi

Max-Alain Gradel provided an assist while Olanrewaju Kayode featured as Sivasspor secured a 1-0 win over Yeni Malatyaspor in Thursday’s Turkish Super Lig game.

Gradel was afforded his 35th league appearance of the season and delivered a fine performance to ensure his side extended their unbeaten run.

His teammate and Nigeria international Kayode was also handed a starting role in the encounter and made his contribution.

The game started with both sides trying to outwit each other but despite their effort, the first half failed to produce a goal.

After the restart, Sivasspor continued to push for the opening goal but missed a number of scoring chances before Jorge Felix eventually broke the deadlock.

The attacker found the back of the net in the 88th minute with a fine effort after receiving a timely assist from Gradel.

The goal was all Rıza Calımbay's men needed to secure all three points at Yeni 4 Eylul Stadi to ensure they continue their fine form.

The victory moved Sivasspor to seventh spot on the league table after gathering 55 points from 36 games.

Gradel featured for 90 minutes before he was replaced by Robin Yalcin while Kayode was on parade for the entirety of the game.

The Ivory Coast international has been with the Braves since the summer of 2020 after joining the club from Toulouse.

The winger has made more than 50 appearances across all competitions and in the current campaign, he has featured 44 times, scoring 10 goals and providing 14 assists.

Kayode, meanwhile, teamed up with Sivasspor last summer on a season-long loan from Ukrainian Premier League club Shakhtar Donetsk.

The attacker has been in fine form since his arrival, scoring nine goals and providing three assists, amid other dazzling performances.

The African stars will hope to help Sivasspor continue in their winning ways when they slug it out against Gaziantep FK on May 3.

Ex-Germany defender Metzelder given suspended prison sentence over child pornography charges

The former Real Madrid star admitted to sending exploitative images of children to three women

Ex-Germany defender Christoph Metzelder has been given a suspended 10-month prison sentence for sharing child pornography images.

The 40-year-old admitted to sharing the files with three women on WhatsApp during his appearance at a Dusseldorf court on Thursday.

Metzelder insisted that he was not involved in any "attacks on children and youths" but acknowledged the damage his actions have caused to those involved, while also promising to return the awards he has received for founding a child poverty charity.

What's been said?

"I took screenshots of incriminating images on freely accessible websites and talked about extreme fantasies in chats," the former Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund centre-half said after being found guilty of the charges against him.

"There were no attacks on children or young people and none were planned, despite the extreme comments in chats. It all took place in a parallel digital world.

“I sent these pictures even though I know what unspeakable suffering towards kids in each of these files there is. I leave a wound that will never heal.

"I accept the punishment and I ask for forgiveness from the victims of sexual violence. I will have to live with this guilt as part of society for the rest of my life."

Metzelder's football career

Metzelder began his professional career at Preußen Munster before joining Dortmund in 2000, where he picked up one Bundesliga title while racking up over 150 appearances for the club.

The one-time Germany international joined Madrid on a free transfer in 2007, but only appeared in 31 games in three years at Santiago Bernabeu due to persistent injury problems.

Metzelder was snapped up as a free agent by Schalke after leaving the Blancos, and spent three seasons at Vetlins-Arena before seeing out his playing days at TuS Haltern II.

He also won 47 caps for Germany at the height of his career, receiving runners'-up medals at both the 2002 World Cup and 2008 European Championships.

Obi Mikel: Former Chelsea star nominated for Stoke City award

The former Nigeria international has been shortlisted for the best performing Potter in the month under review

John Obi Mikel has been nominated for Stoke City’s Player of the Month award for April following his stirring performances for the Championship outfit.

He will compete with Adam Davies, Rhys Norrington-Davies and Jacob Brown for the individual accolade.

Mikel did not find the net for the Bet365 Stadium outfit, nonetheless, he featured in all Potters’ six league outings – where they won one, lost thrice and played two draws.

“Another player to feature in every game in April, former Nigeria international John Obi Mikel produced a number of solid performances in the heart of midfield,” a statement from Stoke City website read.

“The 34-year-old used all of his experience to break up and start play, as well as helping to support the younger players around him.

“His effectiveness was clear for all to see in the final game of the month as he put in a man of the match display against Nottingham Forest.”

For Brown, he scored the equaliser against Millwall and also repeated the same feat against Coventry City weeks later. There, the 23-year-old sent a wonder strike into the roof of the net.

Aside from his clean sheet record, Wales international Davies made saves at important moments in games for Michael O'Neill’s team.

Lastly, Norrington-Davies, the on-loan 22-year-old defender played crucial roles as Stoke did not concede against Bristol City and Preston North End. His dynamism also got him a place among the nominees as he thrived at left wing-back, left-back or in central defence.

The winner with the highest number of votes will walk home with the individual accolade.

After an impressive outing with Nigeria at the U20 Fifa World Cup in 2005, Mikel joined Premier League giants Chelsea from Lyn Oslo. At Stamford Bridge, he enjoyed success winning the Champions League, Europa League, two Premier League and three FA Cups.

On the international scene, he earned 91 caps for Nigeria and he played a key role in the Super Eagles triumph at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

He is expected to anchor Stoke City’s midfield when they host Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

Bolo links Gor Mahia's FKF Premier League struggle to Onyango, Juma exits

The defending champions have already lost six games before they have played even half the number of matches in the season

Former Gor Mahia national treasurer Sally Bolo has explained why she thinks the club is struggling in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League.

Before the league was suspended, K’Ogalo were seventh and had lost in six games out of the 14 they already played so far. Bolo believes the inability to retain good players is the main reason for their showings.

Recently, the current treasurer Dolfina Odhiambo said she has found a way to bring the club’s wage bill down and Bolo believes there lies the problem.

“Part of what is being bragged about to have brought down the wage bill is the root cause of the current lacklustre performances by the current squad,” Bolo told Goal. “It is because we could not retain some of the best players simply because we want to pride ourselves on reducing the wage bill.”

Among the players that the local heavyweights lost is Lawrence Juma who joined Sofapaka FC after being a vital midfield cog. Boniface Omondi joined Wazito FC leaving a gaping hole in the attacking department.

Joash Onyango joined Tanzanian giants Simba SC after he had been an important player for K’Ogalo and had won them three Premier League titles while Nicholas Kipkirui left for Nairobi City Stars.

Although Odhiambo blamed Bolo’s tenure for the wage bill, the former national official said they were able to succeed despite the incurred debts.

“I want to bring to your attention that with the monthly wage bill of Ksh5.5 million, former officials, [bonafide officials as per the records at the office of registrar of sports] steered the club up to the quarter-finals of Caf Confederation Cup for the first time in the club’s history,” Bolo added.

“We also won a number of league titles.”

Rumours going around have it that Jules Ulimwengu and Tito Okello have also asked to leave Gor Mahia but the club’s chair Ambrose Rachier explained the absence of the two attackers.

“We allowed [Jules] Ulimwengu and [Tito] Okelllo to go feature for their countries during the international break,” Rachier said. “It is evident that sporting activities are on hold in Kenya and that could be the reason the players have not returned.”

Brazilian attacker Wilson Silva is also understood to have asked for permission to leave.

Ghana need a 'white coach' to be able to win Afcon title - Grunsah

The King Faisal bankroller shares his thoughts on the Black Stars quest to rule the continent in Cameroon next year

King Faisal Babes president Alhaji Karim Grunsah believes Ghana will need a "white coach" to win the Africa Cup of Nations title again.

The Black Stars are set to compete at the continental showpiece for the 23rd time in history when the best 24 nations in Africa convene in Cameroon early next year.

Ghana, currently coached by former national team star CK Akonnor, will be hoping to win the tournament for the fifth time.

“I’m a Ghanaian, I can’t support Burkina Faso or any other country than Ghana but this coach has nothing better to lead our team for the trophy," Grunsah, whose King Faisal Ghana Premier League side are led by Turkish coach Kasim Gokyildiz, told Kumasi FM.

"I believe we can win the trophy but not with this coach, Ghana needs a white coach because football is managed by a critical thinking person and I know you understand me well."

Ghana won the last of their four titles 39 years ago in Libya. Since then, the nation has endured a series of near misses, reaching the final on three occasions - Senegal 1992, Angola 2010 and Equatorial Guinea 2015.

"Over 30 years we’ve not won Afcon. I don’t want to be just another coach who comes in to manage Ghana and goes and then it’s the same story," Akonnor said in May last year, four months after he took over as Ghana boss from James Kwasi Appiah.

"I want us to work and make an impact, be relevant.”

Ghana, led by president Nana Akufo-Addo, has launched a national agenda to end their Afcon drought next year.

The continental title is one of three objectives handed to Akonnor, the second and third being qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and going on to reach the semi-finals of the competition.

“The target is to bring the cup home by winning the Afcon 2022. We must go a step further than our second-placed finishes in 1992, 2010 and 2015 and end the 40-year drought for a title,” Akufo-Addo said on Monday.

"We must also reach at least the semi-finals of the World Cup in Qatar. Our exploits in 2010, where we reached the quarter-finals in South Africa, tell us that once prepared, we have the quality and the talent to match any of the best teams in the world.

“The task might seem daunting, but it is exactly not insurmountable."

At Ghana's last Afcon campaign in 2019, they were eliminated at the Round of 16 stage.

LIVE: Villarreal vs Arsenal

That's all from us today folks, we hope you enjoyed the game!

Arsenal now have a vital away goal to take into the second leg at the Emirates next week. However, before the return fixture, both teams will return to domestic action, with Arsenal facing Newcastle United in the Premier League. While Villarreal welcome Getafe in LaLiga.

Villarreal hold the advantage after a 2-1 victory over Arsenal in the Europa League semi-final first leg. They led 2-0 at the break and looked like they would go on and extend that lead, after Ceballos was sent off for Arsenal. However, the Gunners kept pushing and got their reward when Saka was fouled in the box and Pepe converted the resulting penalty. Both teams ended the game a man down, with Capoue also shown a second yellow card for a late challenge on Saka. The visitors almost equalised in stoppage time, after Aubameyang turned and found space in the box, but he slipped at the wrong moment and Rulli made the save.

90' + 6' FULL-TIME: VILLARREAL 2-1 ARSENAL

90' + 4' CHANCE! Aubameyang with an opportunity to equalise right at the end of the game! They work it quickly up the pitch and Partey finds the striker in behind, who turns away from his marker and only has Rulli to beat. However, as he goes to strike the ball, he slips and this takes some of the power out of his shot, allowing the keeper to make a strong save.

90' + 3' Decent chance! Moreno gets up and powers a header towards the far corner of the net after a cross from the right wing. However, Leno reads it well and makes a comfortable save.

90' + 2' The other Europa League semi-final is being played today and Manchester United are currently beating Roma 6-2 at Old Trafford. So it could be an all English side final.

90' There will be a minimum of five minutes added time played at the end of the second half.

89' Only a minute, plus any stoppage time left to play now, Arsenal are enjoying possession, but they can't seem to get it into the final third to test Rulli.

87' Neither team is really showing much urgency to get forward and score another goal, there are a few tired players out there now. Especially Arsenal as they have had to play much of the second half with 10-men.

83' Pepe has been involved in more Europa League goals than any other player this season (6 goals 4 assists).

80' RED CARD! Capoue dived into a challenge with Saka and caught the Arsenal man late and both players went down injured as a result. Capoue has come off worse, with the referee having to wait a few minutes while he received treatment, before showing him his second yellow card.

79' Capoue is still down injured and the stretcher is coming onto the field to take him off, it looks like a serious one for the Villarreal midfielder.

77' Stoppage in play here as Saka and Capoue collide and the two players are receiving some medical treatment on the pitch. Capoue caught the Arsenal man late and it looks like he will be shown a second yellow card once he stands up, so both teams will be a man down.

75' There is still plenty of time left on the clock for Arsenal to push forward and get an equaliser, can the 10-men complete the comeback?

72' ARSENAL PENALTY! The Gunners have been awarded another penalty and this time it looks like it will stand! Saka dribbles into the box down the right, taking on a couple of Villarreal defenders and Trigueros sticks a foot out and brings him down. The referee immediately points to the spot.

71' Good move! Pepe feeds Saka out to the right, who flicks it to Chambers on the overlap and he drills a good low cross into the box, but Albiol cuts it out before Pepe can get on the end of it.

69' This is the first European semi-final tie that Villarreal will contest since losing 1-3 on aggregate to Liverpool at the same stage of this competition in 2015-16; in fact, they have been eliminated from all four of their major European semi-final ties.

66' CHANCE! Villarreal counter quickly and Moreno should make it 3-0! Coquelin spots the run of Moreno in space in behind the Arsenal defence and picks him out perfectly. The striker then only has Leno to beat, but the keeper makes a great save, tipping it over the crossbar.

64' Decent chance! Rulli fails to deal with a corner, just palming it away to the edge of the box and it comes straight back, there is a bit of scramble in the penalty area, before it falls to Holding, who turns and shoots. However, his strike flies well wide.

61' SAVE! Villarreal work the chance well down the right wing, with Chukwueze eventually picking it up inside the box and he fires a shot towards goal. However, it is too close to Leno, who makes a good stop.

61' It will be very difficult for Arsenal to pull a goal back now, they are camped inside their own half, with everyone back behind the ball at the moment.

59' Ceballos argued the decision on the sidelines for a while after his sending off, but he has now been escorted away. Will Arsenal be forced into making a change to boost their midfield?

57' It has gone from bad to worse for Arsenal! Ceballos has been shown a second yellow card for a late challenge on Parejo and the midfielder has been sent off. The Arsenal players are furious with the decision as there didn’t seem to be an awful lot of contact. However, the referee won’t change his mind and Arsenal are down to 10-men.

56' Despite their dominance in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, Arsenal have struggled to carve open the Villarreal defence, who look pretty comfortable.

54' Arsenal have reached the semi-finals of European competition for the 10th time (including Fairs Cup), with the Gunners getting to the last four in three of their four Europa League campaigns.

52' It will be interesting to see how long Arteta leaves it before making some changes to try and get Arsenal back into the game. They do have Aubameyang back on the bench.

50' This is better from Arsenal, they are showing more intent in the opening few minutes of the second half. Villarreal haven't seen much possession themselves so far.

48' CHANCE! Villarreal fail to clear the danger, with Torres only half clearing a cross and it falls to the feet of Pepe, who drills an effort towards the near post, but Albiol gets across brilliantly to make the block. Not too far away at all.

46' The second half is under way!

Arsenal have struggled to get going, with Rulli yet to be tested in the Villarreal goal and they seem short of ideas in attack, with no real striker out there on the pitch. Getting an away goal in this second half will be a big task.

Villarreal look very comfortable and hold a 2-0 lead at the break, thanks to an early strike from Trigueros, before Albiol doubled their lead from close range just before the half an hour mark. Arsenal thought they had the chance to pull one back from the penalty spot, after Pepe was fouled by Foyth and the referee pointed to the spot. However, after a VAR check it was overturned after Pepe handled it in the build-up.

45' + 1' HALF-TIME: VILLARREAL 2-0 ARSENAL

45' There will be a minimum of one minute added time played at the end of the first half.

43' CHANCE! Brilliant run from midfield by Foyth, he skips past a couple of Arsenal players and then feeds Moreno in behind the Arsenal defence. The striker rounds Leno, but then just runs out of room and can't quite reach the ball to turn it towards goal from a tight angle.

41' There isn’t long left to play before the end of the first half, can Arsenal pull one back before the half-time whistle?

39' Arsenal are yet to beat Villarreal away from home, drawing on both previous visits (2006 and 2009). Their one goal in those games was an Emmanuel Adebayor overhead kick assisted by Cesc Fàbregas, while Robert Pires appeared as a substitute for the hosts.

35' NO PENALTY! The referee has changed his decision after looking at the replay, as Pepe is shown to have handled the ball in the build-up. Foyth had also been booked due to the penalty award, so this has been wiped out as well.

35' VAR CHECK! The officials are checking this penalty decision, as it looks like Pepe may have handled the ball as it came over the top. The referee is going over the monitor.

34' ARSENAL PENALTY! It comes after a long ball over the top of the Villarreal defence by Xhaka towards Pepe and the Arsenal attacker gets in front of Foyth and the two players get their legs tangled up and the Villarreal right-back brings him down just inside the box. The referee immediately points to the spot.

33' Decent chance! Moreno finds a little bit of time and space on the edge of the box and he fires a low strike towards goal, but he doesn't get enough power on it and it flies wide of Leno's goal.

31' Arsenal have a huge task ahead of them now, they are 2-0 down with a lot of time left to play here. Can they nick an away goal at least?

28' Decent effort! Partey lines up a shot from the edge of the box, after Odegaard flicks it to him. However, the midfielders effort doesn't trouble Rulli.

27' There are a few frustrated Arsenal players out there on the pitch, with a few silly fouls being given away at the moment, which is handing possession straight back to their opponents.

25' Well wide! Odegaard is found in space on the edge of the box and probably could have a go at goal himself, but instead he opts to pass to Saka to his right, who cuts inside and curls an effort towards the top left corner. However, it flies well wide of the Villarreal goal.

23' Almost! Arsenal try and counter quickly after defending a corner at the other end. Ceballos tries to feed Pepe in-behind the Villarreal defence and he would have been through on goal, but his pass is poor and Rulli comes out and clears the danger.

21' Villarreal and Arsenal will play for the fifth time in European competition, with the previous four games taking place in the Champions League (semi-finals in 2005-06 and quarter-finals in 2008-09) – Villarreal are yet to beat the Gunners (D2 L2).

19' There isn't a great pace to the game at the moment, with Villarreal showing more intent to push forward, but apart from their goal, they haven't tested Leno at all.

17' Saka whips a good ball into the penalty area looking for Pepe at the far post, however, Foyth gets across and makes the clearance. Arsenal just don't look threatening in the final third at the moment.

15' Good move! Pepe does well down the left wing, he takes on Foyth and manages to get a good low cross into the penalty area, but it is well blocked at the near post.

13' Arsenal are yet to get going, they haven't settled into their rhythm and the hosts look far more comfortable, especially with their early lead.

11' Trigueros' strike was the earliest Arsenal have conceded in European competition since September 2016, when Edinson Cavani scored after 42 seconds for PSG in the Champions League.

9' Villarreal look full of confidence and are constantly getting at the Gunners down the wings. Pedraza has just taken on Chambers down the left and whipped a good low cross into the box, but Leno comfortably gathers.

7' Arsenal haven't touched the ball much so far in these opening few minutes, they've got it all to do to get something out of this game. An away goal is vital.

4' Villarreal are enjoying more of the early possession here, but it is all in their own half of the pitch as Arsenal are playing a high pressing game and are keeping them penned in.

2' Offside! Good move by Arsenal, they open up the hosts defence with a quick move as Smith Rowe feeds Pepe in behind, but the flag goes up for offside. However, after looking at the replay, it looks like Pepe was just onside.

1' We're under way!

The teams are out on the pitch and kick-off is just a few minutes away, stay tuned for all the match action!

Meanwhile Mikel Arteta only makes one change to his Arsenal side, with Odegaard coming into the team and Nketiah drops to the bench. There is no Alexandre Lacazette for the Gunners and Aubameyang is on the bench, so Pepe leads the line.

The hosts have made two changes to their starting line-up, with Rulli replacing Asenjo in goal and Pedraza comes into the team at left-back, with Alberto Moreno dropping to the bench.

ARSENAL SUBS: Mohamed Elneny, Mat Ryan, Gabriel Martinelli, Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson, Arthur Okonkwo, Cedric Soares, Hector Bellerin, David Luiz, Willian, Gabriel, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

ARSENAL (3-5-1-1): Bernd Leno; Calum Chambers, Rob Holding, Pablo Mari; Emile Smith Rowe, Dani Ceballos, Thomas Partey, Granit Xhaka, Bukayo Saka; Martin Odegaard; Nicolas Pepe.

VILLARREAL SUBS: Jaume Costa, Carlos Bacca, Ramiro Funes Mori, Moi Gomez, Alberto Moreno, Sergio Asenjo, Mario Gaspar, Alex Baena, Francis Coquelin, Fernando Nino, Yeremi Pino, Pervis Estupinan.

VILLARREAL (4-3-3): Geronimo Rulli; Juan Foyth, Raul Albiol, Pau Torres, Alfonso Pedraza; Etienne Capoue, Daniel Parejo, Manu Trigueros; Gerard Moreno, Paco Alcacer, Samuel Chukwueze.

Neither side are in good form coming into this game, with Villarreal losing their last two LaLiga games, against Alaves and Barcelona, which sees them sit seventh in the table. Meanwhile the Gunners are winless in their last two Premier League games, having drawn against Fulham, before a 1-0 defeat against Everton last time out.

Villarreal secured their place in the semi-finals after a 3-1 aggregate victory over Dynamo Zagreb, while Arsenal beat Slavia Prague 5-1 over two legs, following a 4-0 away win.

Haaland's next move: Join Real Madrid, Man City? Stay at Dortmund?

Majoro has two months left on his current deal with Usuthu and he is free to indulge in negotiations with other clubs

AmaZulu FC have provided an update regarding the future of former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates marksman Lehlohonolo Majoro.

The experienced player is enjoying his football at the moment at the KwaZulu-Natal giants having netted three goals in his last two PSL matches.

The man nicknamed Major signed a two-year deal with Usuthu when he rejoined the Durban-based side in June 2019 and his contract is set to expire at the end of June 2021.

Therefore, Major is free to indulge in negotiations with other clubs as he is in the last six months of his current contract with Usuthu.

AmaZulu chairman Sandile Zungu has pointed out that the club is looking to extend Major's contract with the 34-year-old having established himself as a key player under coach Benni McCarthy.

“Our intention is definitely to keep Majoro and we have made it clear to him through his agent,” Zungu told Daily Sun

Majoro struggled for form in the first round of the 2019/20 season, but he played some of his best football when the PSL resumed in a bio-bubble - scoring key goals which helped AmaZulu avoid relegation from the elite league.

The Ladybrand-born player has been able to carry his form into the current campaign and Zungu revealed that McCarthy has been impressed by Major's attitude.

“I know the coach speaks very highly of him and so do we. He’s got an exceptional attitude and that has augured well for Usuthu’s fighting spirit. It fits our strategy," he added.

Majoro has netted eight goals in 15 starts in the league so far this term with McCarthy having transformed AmaZulu into potential PSL title contenders.

Usuthu are currently placed second on the league standings - a point behind leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns, who have two games in hand.

Major's experience will be important for AmaZulu as they challenge for the league title having won the championship with Chiefs in the 2012/13 season.

The former Bafana Bafana international is in his second spell with AmaZulu having made his PSL debut in the 2010/11 season under Manqoba Mngqithi.

He scored 14 league goals in 27 appearances for AmaZulu and he went on to play for the two biggest football clubs in the country, Chiefs and Pirates.
