Simba SC will shock Africa and the world against Kaizer Chiefs – Manara

The official believes Wekundu wa Msimbazi are capable of a resounding comeback against the Premier Soccer League side

Simba SC spokesperson Haji Manara has claimed they are going to shock Africa and the world by qualifying for the Caf Champions League semi-final.

Simba stumbled on Saturday against South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs when they suffered a 4-0 defeat at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg in their quarter-final first leg.

Manara is, however, adamant they will give a huge response in the second leg against Amakhosi and progress to the penultimate stage of the continental competition.

“I will be the last person to believe that this squad [Simba SC] has been eliminated from the Champions League. This Simba is going to shock Africa and the world,” Manara wrote on his Facebook page.

“We will be back at home with a resounding and an earthquake-like response and a big shock will hit those who are laughing at us now. Prepare psychologically for this early.

“Simba will qualify for the Champions League's semi-final.”

The 4-0 loss is the biggest Simba have suffered in the recent past despite facing big sides. In the group stage, Simba picked up surprising wins against Al Ahly and AS Vita and finished as the winners of the group.

At home, they drew 1-1 against Yanga SC in the first Mainland Premier League meeting in Dar es Salaam. The second meeting had to be postponed after disagreement emerged following the change of kick-off time.

Earlier, Manara had conceded Wekundu wa Msimbazi lost to Chiefs who were better than them on the day.

“We have lost to a team who were the best of the day,” Manara said. “We have played a very poor game and did not deserve to get anything from the game.

“We committed very many silly mistakes which deserved the humiliation we have received in Johannesburg but life must go on, we also have another 90 minutes to decide the destiny of the game in the return leg.”

Meanwhile, the club’s CEO Barbara Gonzalez asked for patience from their fans after the stumble in South Africa.

“I am asking for fans’ patience, if they [Chiefs] won 4-0 at home, we can also turn the tables at home, football is unpredictable, we only need to believe in ourselves and know we can do it, let us meet next week," she said.

Simba will host Amakhosi at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam next weekend.

LIVE: PSG vs Reims

The players are emerging from the tunnel and kick off is just seconds away!

Reims will be a tough proposition for PSG today though: they’re unbeaten in their last five away games in Ligue 1 (won two, drawn three), after losing four of their previous seven.

By contrast, Reims are unchanged from the side that lost 1-0 to Monaco last time out.

PSG make seven changes to the side that beat Montpellier on penalties in the French cup semi-final during the week. The headline is that Neymar returns to the starting lineup in place of Icardi. Meanwhile, the other six changes see Florenzi, Diallo, Parades, Gueye and Sarabia make way for Dagba, Kehrer, Herrera, Pereira and Di Maria.

SUBS: Arber Zeneli, Dario Maresic, Kaj Sierhuis, Dereck Kutesa, Thibault De Smet, Moussa Doumbia, Mouhamadou Drammeh, El Bilal Toure, Dialy Ndiaye.

REIMS (4-1-4-1): Predrag Rajkovic; Thomas Foket, Wout Faes, Yunis Abdelhamid, Ghislain Konan; Moreto Cassama; Nathanael Mbuku, Marshall Munetsi, Xavier Chavalerin, Mathieu Cafaro; Boulaye Dia.

SUBS: Alessandro Florenzi, Leandro Paredes, Idrissa Gueye, Sergio Rico, Pablo Sarabia, Moise Kean, Abdou Diallo, Mauro Icardi, Rafinha.

PSG (4-2-3-1): Keylor Navas; Colin Dagba, Marquinhos, Thilo Kehrer, Mitchel Bakker; Ander Herrera, Danilo Pereira; Angel Di Maria, Neymar, Julian Draxler; Kylian Mbappe.

Reims, on the other hand, are safely placed in 13th in the table and they can play without pressure as they look to upset the hosts today.

Hello and welcome to live commentary of this Ligue 1 fixture between PSG and Reims. This is the penultimate matchday of the campaign and it could be season-defining for PSG. They enter this one in second place – three points behind leaders Lille. Anything other than a win today could potentially see them surrender the title to their rivals, and they’ll be desperate to take the race into the final game of the season with three points.

'Strikers score like that' - Klopp wowed by Alisson winner but calls for Liverpool 'professionalism' to reach top four

The goalkeeper netted a crucial header in the dying minutes of Sunday's Premier League clash against West Brom

Jurgen Klopp was left in awe of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson after he scored the winning goal against West Brom on Sunday.

The Brazil international headed in a corner in the 95th minute to make it 2-1 at the Hawthorns to keep his side's hopes of securing a place in the Champions League alive.

Alisson is the first goalkeeper to net a competitive goal for the Reds and Klopp was stunned by the way he popped up to make the difference in the crucial match.

What did Klopp say?

"Wow, is a pretty good word. It was spectacular and a good game," he told BBC Sport. "What a moment! That is so far the highlight. I hope we have time for another highlight [this season]. It was a tricky game. Winning that way is really special. I couldn't be happier in the moment.

"It's the best goal I've ever seen scored by a goalkeeper! Striker's score like that. If Olivier Giroud scores like that you say it's a worldie. It's a worldie! Wow!

"[Alisson's] our player, our boy and our brother. When he is suffering we are all suffering. It's hard in these moments. There are more important things than football but when football can deliver moments like this for him, and all the boys, and our fans, then football is the best thing for a few seconds than anything else out there."

He added to Sky Sports: "It's an unbelievable header, I've never seen anything like that, good technique. I wasn't sure what I was seeing."

Can the Reds finish in the top four?

Liverpool are in fifth place and a point behind Chelsea with two games left to play. The Anfield side, who are now on a three-game winning streak, visit Burnley on Wednesday before they finish off the campaign next Sunday when they host Crystal Palace.

"We are not even halfway through. We have to win going to Turf Moor. We have to win. There will be a proper atmosphere and will not be a friendly game," Klopp said as his side look to maintain their fight for a spot in the group stage of next season's Champions League.

"West Brom fought really hard. I heard Sam Allardyce asked for professionalism before the game and he got that proper answer. In the situation we are in the only thing we have to do is keep pressure on our competitors around us. We recover and go again.

"I saw it plenty of times that players lose the plot [late on in games]. None of us did that. We were calm but full of desire. Three of the best chances we had were in the last five minutes. In these moments it was really good. It's not easy to stay calm in moments like this but we did and we got the rewards."

Asante Kotoko spared by Ganiyu's late effort in Liberty Professionals showdown

The Porcupine Warriors settled for a point in their Ghana Premier League fixture on Sunday

A late Ismail Abdul Ganiyu equaliser helped Asante Kotoko snatch a 1-1 away draw against relegation-threatened Liberty Professionals in the Ghana Premier League on Sunday.

The defender's 82nd minute effort spared the Porcupine Warriors' blushes at Dansoman's Carl Reindorf Park after Evans Owusu put the home side in front.

The Kumasi-based side still lead the table, four points ahead of second-placed Karela United, who beat Eleven Wonders 2-0 at Crosby Awuah Memorial Park. Diawisie Taylor and Bismarck Oppong were on the score sheet for the hosts. Wonders, meanwhile, are 14th on the log.

Hearts of Oak, who are set to engage 11th-placed Elmina Sharks in a late kick-off fixture on Sunday, are currently third on the table. A win for the Phobians will propel them to second on the log and cut down Kotoko's lead to two points.

Elsewhere, in Dormaa, Medeama, fourth on the standings, suffered a setback in their bid to move up the table as they were handed a 2-0 away defeat by Aduana Stars. Samuel Bio and Sam Adams netted for the Fire Boys who sit one place below the opposition.

Medeama are tied on points with Great Olympics, who succumbed to a 1-0 away loss to Ashanti Gold, owing to Stephen Banahene's strike in the 55th minute. The winners hold the ninth position.

In Dawu, rock-bottom Inter Allies hammered 12th-positioned Berekum Chelsea 5-0, thanks to goals from Alex Aso (2x), Richmond Lamptey, Samuel Armah and Suleman Nafiu.

King Faisal's quest to leave the relegation zone received a boost by their 3-1 home victory over Bechem United, who are 10th on the table. A Zubairu Ibrahim double and a Kwame Peprah effort have moved the Kumasi-based side level on points with Liberty and Legon Cities. Steven Owusu Kaakyire registered the consolation for Bechem, who hold the 10th position.

Earlier on Saturday, Wafa beat Legon 1-0, courtesy of Justus Torsutsey's first half effort. The victorious Academy Boys are seventh on the standings while the Royals place one spot above the relegation zone.

On Monday, Dreams will hope to make it two wins in a row with victory over Ebusua Dwarfs away in Cape Coast. The clubs are eighth and 13th on the standings, respectively.

Arteta wants Arsenal to be top of the league, not top dog in London

The Egypt and Senegal internationals combined well to rescue Jurgen Klopp’s men from defeat at the Hawthorns

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane continued their fine combination to help Liverpool secure a 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion in Sunday’s Premier League game.

West Brom’s aim to end the season with pride suffered a blow as the Reds extended their unbeaten run to seven games across all competitions.

Hal Robson-Kanu opened the scoring for Sam Allardyce’s men in the 15th minute of the encounter after receiving an assist from Matheus Pereira.

Mane then found Salah with a fine assist in the 33rd minute and the Egypt forward wasted no time to tuck home his effort.

The duo have now combined for a goal for the 22nd time for Liverpool across all competitions under Jurgen Klopp.

Goalkeeper Alisson Becker then scored the match-winning goal moments before the end of the game, powering a fine header into the back of the net from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner kick.

The victory brightened Liverpool’s hopes of clinching a Champions League spot at the end of the season after accruing 63 points from 36 games to be placed fifth on the table.

Salah has racked up 30 goals, including 21 in the Premier League, this season and provided five assists in 47 appearances.

The forward has been turning heads since teaming up with the Reds in the summer of 2017 from AS Roma, scoring a number of goals.

Mane has also been playing a key role for Liverpool since his arrival at the club and has forged a productive partnership with Salah and Roberto Firmino.

Mane, who has managed 14 goals and provided eight assists, recently stated that the 2020-21 season remains the worst in his career.

The African stars inspired the Reds to win the Champions League, Premier League, which had eluded them for about 30 years.

Salah and Mane will be expected to continue their partnership when Liverpool take on Burnley in their next league game on May 19.

The attackers are also key members of their national teams and recently helped Senegal and Egypt qualify for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

LIVE: Southampton vs Arsenal

More to the point, it does not get any easier for them too. While Bologna await Juventus, and third-place Napoli face Verona, Milan finish up against second-place Atalanta - a side they could moved level with in victory today. Cagliari meanwhile finish with Genoa - but until then, thank you for joining us and have a great week!

But Stefano Pioli now faces a nervy wait until the final round of the season, to ensure that his side will be at the European high table next season. They sit fourth on head-to-head records, a point ahead of Juventus, meaning their fate is their own - but they surely cannot afford any more slip-ups.

Leonardo Semplici has a small grin on his face, and why not? It is seven top-flight games now that his side have gone unbeaten, and they've taken points of another of the big guns. He and his side will be around next season.

The spoils are shared in Serie A, as Milan are held goalless by lowly Cagliari in a frequently energetic encounter - and with it, the Rossoneri must wait to confirm their Champions League berth for next season. It's finished as a draw at San Siro; at full-time, it is Milan 0-0 Cagliari.

90' + 5' FULL-TIME: MILAN 0-0 CAGLIARI

90' + 3' Stefano Pioli can dress this one up how he likes, but there is no getting away from the fact that it is a major blow for their Champions League aspirations. Their last game is far from easy compared to this one and he'll know it. Cagliari have forced play back to midfield and are holding steady.

90' + 1' Castillejo! He pushes an effort around the left post, lofting it in from outside the box. Time is running out for what would surely be a winner now.

86' Cagliari are preparing to make a host of final changes now. They seem poised to simply ride this one out.

84' Something of an unsung hero today, but Fikayo Tomori has been in deftly sturdy form at the back for the hosts as per. If Milan can prise him away from Chelsea, he will be a major boon to any challenge for silverware next term.

82' The draw here will leave Milan particularly susceptible to Juventus however. It will move them only a point above the Bianconeri - still in a theoretical driving seat, but with their Champions League hopes particularly resting on a fine error of margin.

80' There's 10 minutes on the clock and still no sign of a goal. Cagliari have been far more restricted over the latter stages of this game but it has been a particularly energetic display from them nevertheless. If this finishes 0-0, it's one of the more fun goalless draws of the season.

76' Close from Rebic! A free-kick for Milan in the centre-right channel sets up a set-piece opportunity and the striker just drags his header wide at the far post.

74' Pedro has scored three goals against AC Milan in Serie A; the Cagliari striker is top-scoring Brazilian in the last three top five European Leagues this season (41 goals, Neymar 36).

72' Back-to-back chances again for Milan! Calhanoglu sees Cragno save his effort and then Rebic skews one wide. They're getting closer and closer.

69' There is still no sign of a change coming from the Cagliari bench, but the visitors are struggling to match the tempo in their own rear third right now. They may need one soon to ensure they stay watertight.

67' Now a flurry of attempts from Milan - Castillejo, Kjaer and Calhanoglu - all come close to cracking the Cagliari backline, but again, the visitors hold firm. It is becoming a concern for the hosts.

65' Godin goes even closer this time! That's a superb header from the veteran defender and it forces Donnarumma to bat it away with a swift dive once more.

62' Now it is the turn of Godin to flash a header wide of the mark, pushing close to the left post with his deftly touched effort.

60' Cagliari are the team against which Stefano Pioli has won the most games as a manager in Serie A - 10/18 (D4 L4).

56' This has been a joyful game, which is something that hasn't always been applied as a descriptive term to the two sides on show. Both are shifting, ebbing and flowing throughout. It's particularly giddy to watch at points.

54' Pavoletti! It's not quite in the realm of Gordon Banks' legendary save but Gianluigi Donnarumma just contorted himself immaculately to prevent the Cagliari man at close range. A crucial stop keeps Milan from conceding.

52' A spate of corners and high pressure from Milan now keeps Cagliari under the cosh, but their defence, guided by Godin, proves equal to the task for the moment.

50' Milan’s Simon Kjaer has scored five goals in Serie A, with his last such finish in the Italian top-flight coming in December 2009 against Cagliari with Palermo. If he nabs one here, there's going to be a proper party somewhere in the dressing room.

48' Early chances at both ends in the opening exchanges of this new half now, as Nandez lofts a wide shot from distance for Cagliari, before Milan race down the other end and Calhanoglu sees Cragno save his low effort. There's been no drop in the tempo over the interval.

46' We are back underway at San Siro for the second half of this contest. Can Milan find a winner here, or will it be Cagliari who keep their unbeaten streak hot to touch?

Leonardo Semplici is surely going to be the happier of the two men sat in opposite dugouts today on the basis of the opening 45 minutes in Milan. But Stefano Pioli will know his team are getting closer. This still has a long way to go.

It's goalless at the break at San Siro, but not for lack of trying, as Milan and Cagliari have served up a lively Serie A encounter this Sunday. The hosts still need a win to totally assure themselves of a Champions League spot this evening, but there's the sense that their result will come if they are patient against a stubborn opponent. At half-time, it is Milan 0-0 Cagliari.

45' + 3' HALF-TIME: MILAN 0-0 CAGLIARI

45' + 2' Calhanoglu smashes the strike into the defensive wall and that will be that for the first half!

44' Late danger as we approach the interval here, with Brahim Diaz felled just inside the "D" of the Cagliari penalty area. It's prime set-piece territory for Milan in what will likely be the last play of the half.

42' Hernandez crashes a set-piece play over the bar from distance now. Both sides are getting their chances and taking them too, just without the results that they would be hoping for so far.

38' Cagliari are unbeaten in their last six league matches (W4 D2); the last time they went on a longer such run in Serie A was back in December 2019 (13 under Rolando Maran).

36' The set-piece is particularly ropey, and Milan have little trouble in clearing their lines this time around.

35' Pedro isn't too far away from a dangerous flat cross swiped into the Milan box now, but the hosts do enough to cut off his access, albeit at the expense of a corner.

31' Davide Calabria with the monster shot! That hung in the air with a strangely crystalline clarity, but it soars beyond the far top corner after it is unloaded. Milan are pressing still for the opener.

29' The empty echo of shouts around San Siro has still not made itself the norm despite the season we've had with nobody in stadiums. Games look to slowly be returning to normal, but the odd hollow wheeze will not be missed.

27' A shot for the visitors! Radja Nainggolan prods an effort wide but it is a shot nevertheless, and a decent reminder that they're more than playing their part in this contest.

26' Milan have won each of their last 15 home league games against Cagliari - it’s their longer such streak against a single opponent in the competition.

24' Leonardo Semplici - who came back to the game after a year out following his SPAL exit this term of course - has dragged this side away from relegation since he arrived in February. The players seem to be keen to work for him, and he's mixing his instructions with disconcerting, beaming grins as they hold Milan away from their box.

22' A quarter of the way through this game and neither side has broken the deadlock yet, but this has been far from a lethargic affair. Both teams so far have seen particularly up for the contest on the whole, though Cagliari are still to muster a single shot.

20' Saelemaekers duly follows that effort up with a wayward strike from the resulting corner. He looks to be in the mood today.

18' Saelemaekers with the shot! That is a good stop from Cragno, who gets a meaty glove to the Milan man's low-wattage rocket of a strike, clipped in towards the crossbar.

16' There has already been twice as many passes from Milan as there has been from Cagliari. The Rossoneri aren't shy about moving it around now they've found a groove.

14' Nandez catches Hernandez with a particularly clumsy effort now and though the latter is able to continue, he is moving a little bit more gingerly than he would hoping to be. That might be one tussle to keep an eye on throughout.

12' Milan are reasserting themselves in the middle of the park now. their midfield finding a fluidity that had looked possibly a little bit too spongy in their early plays. This, with a few goals, could turn out to be a cracker of a game; just the sort you'd like to finish up the weekend with.

10' Rebic gets sandwiched between two defenders on the edge of the visitors' penalty area and cannot disentangle himself in time to supply a dangerous pass for a team-mate lurking nearby.

8' Hernandez does some sterling work to cut down another Cagliari encroachment now. This has been a particularly open trifle of a match so far.

6' Cagliari execute a smart counter-press now though and enjoy a brief spell around the final third of the field, creeping around the edges of the hosts' box. They'll do well to keep that up if they can.

4' Rebic whistles a low effort past the far post after he was fed by a neat dink to move onto the right flank. An early warning shot, fired across the bow by Milan.

2' On paper, and despite the number of seasoned pros the visitors have packed into their side today - Diego Godin is still a superb footballer, even in his dotage - this really should go only one way. But Milan have had plenty such games this year where they've failed to deliver the goods.

1' We are underway in this Serie A clash between Milan and Cagliari!

The teams have emerged at San Siro and we are moments away from kick-off.

Cagliari have only won one of their last 34 Serie A matches against Milan (2-1 in May 2017); they have failed to find the net in 50% of those games (17).

Subs: Guglielmo Vicario, Simone Aresti, Giovanni Simeone, Kwadwo Asamoah, Ragnar Klavan, Alberto Cerri, Gabriele Zappa, Matteo Tramoni, Daniele Rugani, Riccardo Sottil, Joseph Alfred Duncan, Alessandro Tripaldelli.

CAGLIARI (3-4-3): Alessio Cragno; Luca Ceppitelli, Diego Godín, Andrea Carboni; Nahitan Nandez, Razvan Marin, Alessandro Deiola, Charalampos Lykogiannis; Radja Nainggolan, Leonardo Pavoletti, Joao Pedro.

Subs: Diogo Dalot, Soualiho Meite, Rade Krunic, Sandro Tonali, Pierre Kalulu Kyatengwa, Alessio Romagnoli, Samu Castillejo, Daniel Maldini, Ciprian Tatarusanu, Mario Mandzukic, Rafael Leao, Jens Hauge.

MILAN (4-2-3-1): Gianluigi Donnarumma; Davide Calabria, Simon Kjaer, Fikayo Tomori, Theo Hernandez; Ismael Bennacer, Franck Kessie; Alexis Saelemaekers, Brahim Diaz, Hakan Calhanoglu; Ante Rebic.

The headline news is surely the continued absence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic - and with the confirmation that the Swede, who came out of international retirement for Euro 2020, will not be able to play at the tournament, his season is officially over. Ante Rebic leads the line.

Leonardo Semplici's side meanwhile have survived the relegation battle - just - and avoided a drop to Serie B with just two games to go. Freed from the anchor of sudden death football, they may allow themselves to relax tonight - and could prove a more freewheeling opponent than anticipated.

It's been a season of what-could-have-beens for Stefano Pioli and the Rossoneri - early trailblazers for the Scudetto in Juventus' hit-and-miss form, before Inter pulled away. But three points here would seal a top four spot over the Bianconeri - and that remains a bare minimum for the hosts.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the 2020-21 Serie A season, as Milan look to consolidate their Champions League berth against Cagliari at San Siro.

Orlando Pirates' Caf Confederation Cup hopes in the balance after Raja Casablanca fight back

The second leg will take place at the Stade Mohamed V Stadium next Sunday and the Moroccans have the advantage after scoring away in Soweto

Raja Casablanca came from a goal down to claim a 1-1 draw against Orlando Pirates in a Caf Confederation Cup first leg quarter-final clash at the Orlando Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

It had looked good for the Soweto giants when they were 1-0 up at half time through Vincent Pule's well-taken goal, only for the north African side to rally in the second half to earn a share of the spoils through Ben Malango's 59th minute strike.

Pirates had started the game on the front foot and visiting keeper Anas Zniti had to react sharply in the seventh minute to keep out a deflected cross from Wayde Jooste, following a free-flowing move by the South African team.

At the other end, Bucs keeper Wayne Sandilands didn't have much to do until the 23rd minute when he made a routine save to keep out Soufiane Rahimi's shot, which was partically blocked by Ben Motshwari.

The Sea Robbers should have taken the lead on the half hour mark when Pule sent in a great cross from the right which picked out Deon Hotto, but from right in front of goal he failed to connect with his attempted volley.

A couple of minutes later, Pirates skipper Thulani Hlatshwayo made a brilliant headed clearance from what was a very dangerous ball into the box towards Malango.

Bucs had the breakthrough they were looking for in the 39th minute when Jooste launched a long ball up field, which was flicked by a Raja defender into the path of Pule, who gobbled up the chance superbly as he took the ball in on goal before chipping it past the on-rushing Zniti.

Three minutes after the restart and the Moroccan side were left upset that they were not awarded a penalty after Malango's touch in the box hit defender Ntsikelelo Nyauza on the arm.

It wasn't given, but Raja kept up the pressure and it paid off on the hour mark when Malango out-muscled Nyauza and then turned inside Bongani Sam before firing a low shot in at the far post to level the score-line.

Following that the game became increasingly cagey as Pirates tried to get back in front but found the visiting team hard to break down.

Even the introduction of Thembinkosi Lorch didn't help the hosts much, with their next opening only arriving in the 82nd minute when Paseka Mako picked out Hotto in the box, but a moment of indecision meant the chance came to nought.

Right at the end of the game there was another glimmer of hope for Pirates when Mako broke into the box down the left flank, but Zniti came out quickly to make the block.

Pep Guardiola wins February's Premier League Manager of the Month award

The 21-year-old claims that he wants his star to shine brightest on the pitch, not off it, preferring to focus more on his game than his appearance

Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt has said that people within the club sometimes laugh at him for the clothes he wears, as he prefers to go for comfort over style while others deck themselves out in expensive designer gear.

Still just 21, the Netherlands international has already been with the Bianconeri for two years, having quickly established himself as a key player despite his young age.

Mentality likely plays a big part in the starlet's rapid rise – even if the laser focus on his profession can sometimes lead to jibes from his team-mates.

What has been said?

Speaking to de Volkskrant, De Ligt said: “I always dress the way I am dressed now. I'm just not a big fan of expensive designer clothes.

“I am Matthijs, I am myself and you will not see me going to training in a tailored suit, it's just that simple. My profession is football player. I want to be a star on the field.

“Sometimes I get laughed at at the club for what I wear, but I don't care. As long as I feel good with my behaviour and how I dress, I am satisfied.

“The most important thing is to perform well on the field, then people respect you much more than when you're wearing certain clothes.”

Hero in a normal boy's clothing

One change De Ligt has had to get used to, however, is the passion with which football is treated in Italy, with the centre-back admitting that while he enjoys being revered, he also likes returning to his home country for the peace and quiet.

“That's the funny thing here,” he said of Turin and beyond. “Whether you play well or play badly, you remain a hero to the supporters. They look up to footballers so much here.

“In the Netherlands, I was just a normal boy who happened to play football. In Italy, footballers stand above average members of society. That's just what it's like here.

“I like the appreciation, but it's also nice to walk around in the Netherlands without being approached so much!”

Bigger picture

Sitting in fifth place in Serie A, Juventus have only one more game with which to secure Champions League football for next season. If Napoli and AC Milan win their remaining games, however, Andrea Pirlo's outfit will be lining up in the Europa League in 2021-22.

West Ham out of drop zone with win vs. Soton

The 24-year-old suffered the injury in the midweek match with Manchester United and will miss the last three games of the campaign

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota will miss the rest of the season after suffering another injury, Jurgen Klopp has confirmed.

The 24-year-old was ruled out of the Reds' Premier League match against West Brom on Sunday with a foot injury.

Jota went off in the second half of the clash with Manchester United on Thursday as his side ran out 4-2 winners, but it will be his last display of 2020-21.

What has been said?

“No good thing without a bad thing – so, we won at Manchester United but Diogo got something with the bone,” Klopp told Sky Sports.

“Not too serious but serious enough to end the season. That’s it.”

How has Jota performed this season?

Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves last September but has been limited to just 18 appearances in the Premier League.

The Portugal international suffered a knee injury in December and was kept out of action until early-March.

The attacker netted his side's first goal against United in midweek to take his tally in the top-flight to nine, while he also struck four times in nine Champions League appearances.

Liverpool in fight for top-four finish

The Reds are fifth in the table heading into Sunday's fixture and four points behind Chelsea, who occupy the last spot that guarantees a place in next season's Champions League.

Three days after they face West Brom, Liverpool will take on Burnley before they finish the campaign with a home game against Crystal Palace.

Caf Confederation Cup: Orlando Pirates 1-1 Raja Casablanca - Bucs held by resilient Green Devils

The two games are part of the opening fixtures since the top-tier was allowed to resume after the March suspension

Sofapaka defeated Wazito FC 2-0 in Sunday’s Football Kenya Federation Premier League tie at Wundanyi Stadium.

Nixon Omondi and Lawrence Juma scored the two second-half goals to condemn Francis Kimanzi’s side to a loss.

Wazito won a fourth-minute penalty but Aigba Abdoul pulled a huge save to deny the visitors' Kevin Kimani an opening goal in the early moments of the first half. Ambrose Sifuna of Batoto ba Mungu was yellow-carded in the 31st minute as the game turned more physical.

Timothy Otieno came on in the 46th minute to replace Pistone Mutamba as Sofapaka added more men upfront in search of an opener. David King'atua came out in the 51st minute as Rwandan star Isaac Mitima came on in another change for the home side.

Omondi scored a goal for Batoto ba Mungu in the 72nd minute after the hosts had looked the hungrier side for the better part of the second half. Juma, a key goal scorer for Sofapaka, added the second in the fourth minute of added time to hand the home side a win and a clean sheet against the Nairobi club.

Meanwhile, Mathare United and Vihiga United shared points from a 0-0 draw at Ruaraka Ground.

John Mwangi won Mathare United a free-kick from a promising position in the 19th minute but Tyson Otieno’s conversion flew over the bar. Goalkeeper Job Ochieng was alert to parry away a free-kick by Lawrence Luvanda in the 38th minute in Vihiga United’s most open chance.

A late challenge on Michael Odongo saw Anthony Otieno receive a yellow card in the 51st minute. Wycliffe Nthatha and Eric Opiyo came on in the 54th minute to replace Mike Isabwa and Lesley Owino in Vihiga United’s first changes.

Mathare United made their first substitutions a minute after the hour mark as Boniface Akenga and James Kinyanjui came on for Danson Kago and Daniel Otieno.

Otieno came close to breaking the deadlock in the 63rd minute but he blasted slightly wide from a good goalscoring position. On the other end, Patrick Okulo was unable to find the back of the net against Mathare’s Ochieng three minutes later.

A deflected cross from Alphonse Ndonye almost gave Mathare United an opener but the ball flew slightly above the far post in the 74th minute. Clifford Alwanga came on in the 78th minute in place of Otieno as Mathare made another change. A final change saw Mwangi and Khalid Jumaan exchange places in the 87th minute.

'Everyone's been brainwashed into playing the same way' - Allardyce warns Premier League is becoming boring

The 66-year-old West Brom manager fears the teams in the English top-flight are becoming too similar and coaches are being restricted

Sam Allardyce has warned that the Premier League is in danger of becoming boring because teams have been "brainwashed" into using the same playing style.

The English top-flight has opened up to different tactical approaches over the last decade, with an influx of coaches coming from elsewhere in Europe.

However the West Brom manager fears coaches are being prevented from sticking to their preferred style and that the league is suffering as a result.

What has been said?

He said to Sky Sports: "What's the point of playing out from the back against Man City and Liverpool, the best high-pressing team in this country. If they drop off, you play out from the back. Where's the space? Exploit the space. I tried to get the players to think about that. It's a simple game that's been complicated far too much by too many people.

"Has the Premier League got tougher tactically? No. The big change is that everyone wants to play the same way. Everyone's been brainwashed into, 'You must play this way, you must…

"As a manager at 66, I really am glad I'm not in my 30s, with people telling me what I should do and how I should play. It's detrimental to the world of football. It'll become boring. The best league in the world should have different systems, different ways of playing.

"To press every young manager into the same way hinders the development of coaches for me; they'll end up trying to do something because of the pressure and they'll end up losing their job and they will be perfectly good coaches who might not get another chance in football to manage.

"We must let young coaches express themselves with the team and players they have and their capabilities. If they've got the capabilities to play out from the back all the time, great. If they haven't, they will keep giving the ball away and the opposition will keep scoring. You have to find another way sometimes and if you don't, you lose your job."

What happened to West Brom?

Allardyce took charge of the Baggies in December but was unable to rescue them from relegation. The Hawthorns side sit second bottom of the Premier League and 12 points from safety with three games left to play.

West Brom host Liverpool on Sunday, which will be followed by a home game against West Ham on Wednesday. They will then take on Leeds at Elland Road in the last game of the season on May 23.

Kaizer Chiefs coach Hunt: Sometimes things do work out, that's why I laughed

Amakhosi eased pressure after days of domestic troubles by finding joy in Africa with a heavy win over Tanzanian opposition

Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt can now finally afford to smile after his side thumped Simba SC 4-0 in Saturday’s Caf Champions League quarter-final, first leg match at FNB Stadium.

After enduring days of sorrow in which his team was losing to relegation-threatened teams in the Premier Soccer League, results which dented Chiefs’ top-eight ambitions, Hunt's mood was changed on Saturday.

He was captured on television a couple of times beaming with smiles or laughing, especially after substitute Leonardo Castro’s goal, wich added to Erick Mathoho’s opener and Samir Nurkovic’s brace in sinking Simba.

“Sometimes things do work out you know - that's why I laughed,” said Hunt as per IOL.

“Ten or 15 seconds before that [fourth goal], I said what we need to do, the things we work on and where we need to be without the ball, and then we turned the ball over and we were in the right position so the goal came.

“So, that's why I laughed because that was pretty much [what we wanted]. You don't get that much in football but it was, from an organisational point of view, out of position.

"Because I knew when we turned it over that we would get a situation like that, and it worked out.”

It was the first time for the Soweto giants to win by such a huge margin this season, which Hunt described as the “most testing” as they have been struggling on the domestic front.

Going into the Simba game, Chiefs had not tasted victory in four straight league games and are placed 10th on the table, five points above the relegation zone.

Despite making huge strides towards the Champions League semi-finals, the Chiefs coach declares that personally he will come out of this term stronger.

“This has been the most testing [season] for me personally. It has taken a lot of patience,” Hunt added.

“A lot of endeavor, a lot of work. I know I will come out of this stronger. I am not a coach that speaks a lot, that gloats. I let the record speak for itself. But I know next season I will be stronger that's for sure.”

The Amakhosi tactician also explained why Chiefs have been thriving on the continent while finding it difficult in the PSL as he feels that his players are more suited for Champions League football.

“It is a much slower game [in the Champions League], a much more predictable game. I have always said that the players run faster than the ball in the PSL,” Hunt continued.

“But in the Champions League it's much slower and maybe it suits us a bit better. The group of players that we have here are a little bit more methodical and a bit more direct.”

After centre-back Mathoho grabbed Chiefs’ opener, he is now on three goals and among the top-scorers in this competition this season.

He is also Chiefs’ all-time top-goal scorer in the Champions League with six goals after overtaking Knowledge Musona.

Fan View: Amartey’s Chelsea ‘disrespect’ generates controversy after Leicester City's FA Cup win

The Ghanaian has found himself the target of criticism for his behaviour as his team celebrated Saturday’s win

Leicester City defender Daniel Amartey has come under heavy criticism after being caught on camera throwing a Chelsea pennant onto the floor as his team celebrated their FA Cup final triumph over Chelsea in the dressing room on Saturday.

In the game, Belgium star Youri Tielemans scored the only goal of the game to hand the Foxes their first FA Cup title.

Leicester’s celebrations, as expected, continued into the dressing room, with some players deciding to share the special moment live on social media.

It was in one of such broadcasts that Amartey, an unused substitute in the fixture, incurred the wrath of fans.

In a dancing mood, the Ghana international went for the Chelsea pennant, displayed it to the camera before throwing it over his shoulder.

The action has generated a lot of talk on social media, with many calling it “disrespectful” while others have called for a prompt apology.

Some of the reactions are curated below:

'I’m lying if I say it’s not interesting' - Botman flattered by Liverpool links as Lille star admits the Premier League 'is something special'

The Dutchman says he will make a final decision on his future at the end of the season amid rumours the Reds are poised to swoop for his services

Lille star Sven Botman has admitted he's flattered by rumours linking him with Liverpool and says that the Premier League is "something special".

Botman is attracting plenty of attention from top clubs heading towards the summer transfer window, having played a key role in Lille's tilt at the Ligue 1 title in 2020-21.

Liverpool reportedly tried to sign the 21-year-old in January amid a defensive injury crisis, and have been tipped to reignite their interest when the market reopens, with the Dutchman keeping his options open despite still having four years let to run on his current contract.

What's been said?

“It is a good compliment when you hear these clubs are interested,” Botman told The Athletic when quizzed on the Liverpool rumours.

"I’m lying if I say it’s not interesting me — it’s the first time such big clubs are linked to me — but it was early days because in January I was only at Lille for half a season. It was nice to hear but I was focusing on Lille and I’m still doing this.

"After the season I will enjoy a vacation and see what happens next. If I’m honest, the Premier League is one of the leagues I dreamed about… but also Serie A, La Liga, the Bundesliga.

"The Premier League is something special. It’s the football I really like and that fits me. The style of play, the emotion; I really like to see the fans with such big emotions in the stands.

"It is a beautiful competition I really like to watch and did for pretty much all my life."

The Lille centre-back added on the possibility of leaving Stade Pierre Mauroy this summer: “I’m not the kind of guy who is already planning for the future. How it’s going with me now, I hope to someday make a good step to a top competition or a big club; that’s my goal.

"But I’m good at the moment with Lille. I’m really enjoying this year, I’m enjoying playing a lot. I learn a lot and I still have to improve a lot. I’m not complaining about my situation right now, I’m happy at the moment.

“For my ambitions, yes, of course I want to achieve as much as possible. I hope to make a big, beautiful step for me. We’ll have to see in the future if that is possible or not.”

Botman's record at Lille

Lille snapped Botman up from Eredivisie giants Ajax for just €9 million in July 2020, and he made his debut in a Ligue 1 clash against Rennes a month later.

The Netherlands international has since racked up 45 appearances across all competitions for Christophe Galtier's side, who will be crowned champions of France if they pick up four points from their final two league fixtures against Saint Etienne and Angers.

The bigger picture

Liverpool ended up signing Ozan Kabak on loan from Schalke and Ben Davies on a permanent deal from Preston North End in the winter transfer window as Jurgen Klopp sought to plug the gaps at the back caused by the injury-enforced absence of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

However, Davies has yet to feature for the Reds senior team and Kabak's future is uncertain, with the Merseyside outfit reportedly set to pass up the option to sign him outright for £18m ($25m).

Botman could, therefore, emerge as a target for Liverpool once again later in the year, especially if Van Dijk's recovery from knee surgery runs through to the start of the 2021-22 season, with Gomez and Joel Matip also still on the treatment table.

The Belgian tactician reveals he was gutted to see Ingwe defending their slim lead against the Sugar Millers instead of looking for more goals

AFC Leopards coach Patrick Aussems has revealed his disappointment after the team’s failure to score many goals in their slim 1-0 FKF Premier League win against Nzoia Sugar on Saturday.

Ingwe returned to action after the league resumed on Friday against the Sugar Millers and it was Caleb Olilo who scored the only goal of the game that helped Ingwe move above KCB on the log after 15 games.

However, the win has not excited their Belgian coach, who feels his team returned to defend the lone goal most of the second half and thus failed to score many goals in the match they dominated.

“But you know in this kind of game we had the opportunity, we needed to win with a large scoreline obviously and that is a little bit my disappointment today [Saturday] because in the second half we were sinking too much to defend,” Aussems told Goal.

“It was not an easy game because it was like we have started a new league because it is almost two months we did not play any official game so the most important thing was the three points.

“We knew will not be ready especially physically regarding the days we had to prepare for the match but did the job even if we were a little bit in trouble in the second half with all the longs balls.”

On his part, Nzoia coach Ibrahim Shikanda faulted his players for the defeat, insisting they did not play according to his instructions.

“I don’t have much to say but thank God for the game we put up today [Saturday], AFC Leopards got three chances and used them to score, but we created many chances and failed to convert them,” Shikanda told Goal.

“So we have to go back to the drawing board and work on the mistakes that we committed against AFC but if you ask me, we have lost because we did not use our chances, and also the break occasioned by the lockdown because our display is not the same like when we stopped playing.

“I am also not happy with some of my players, they have not responded well to my plans and instructions but it is okay we are now going back to the drawing board to start afresh.”
