Spain, Portugal, Netherlands and Germany will contest the semi-finals of the U21 European Championship in Slovenia and Hungary.

Spain sealed their place in the last four with a win against Croatia, while Portugal edged past Italy. Meanwhile, Netherlands got the better of France and Germany beat Denmark in a penalty shootout.

The semi-finals will be played on Thursday June 3.

Spain 2-1 (AET) Croatia

La Roja needed extra time to get eliminate Croatia in Slovenia.

Javier Puado was the star of the show, netting both goals to cancel out Luka Ivanusec's late penalty for Croatia.

Puado came off the bench just before the hour mark and opened the scoring just eight minutes later.

Bryan Gil's cross found the Espanyol player in the box and he finished from close range.

Spain looked set to have the tie wrapped up in normal time but Croatia were awarded a penalty in stoppage time when Hugo Guillamon brought down Stipe Biuk in the box.

Dinamo Zagreb midfielder Ivanusec converted to give his side a chance, but Puado popped up in the second half of extra time to seal the tie, firing into the roof of the net after taking on a pass from Marc Cucurella.

Netherlands 2-1 France

Netherlands came from behind to eliminate France thanks to two goals from AZ striker Myron Boadu.

Les Bleus took the lead through a header from centre-back Dayot Upamecano midway through the first half.

Netherlands came back strong in the second half, though, with Boadu finding the equaliser just six minutes after the restart.

It took until the third minute of stoppage time for Oranje to net the winner as they hit France with speed.

Justin Kluivert found Boadu with a square ball and the 20-year-old tucked it into the net.

Portugal 5-3 (AET) Italy

Portugal always had the advantage in their quarter-final, but Italy refused to give up and were rewarded for their efforts.

Dany Mota scored first just six minutes into the match before reacting quickly to bring down a header from Daniel Braganca and blast into the net.

Tomasso Pobega pulled one back for the Azzurri just before half-time when he knocked past goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

Portugal were ahead just 13 minutes into the second half through Goncalo Ramos but Gianluca Scamacca kept Italy in it with a goal two minutes later.

Just as Portugal looked set to hold on to the lead, Patrick Cutrone found the net in the 89th minute with a goal to take it into extra time.

The job became much more difficult for Italy right at the start of extra time, however, as Matteo Lovato was sent off with his second yellow card for a foul on Mota.

Portugal eventually restored their lead thanks to a goal from Real Valladolid attacker Jota but they did not stop there as Francisco Conceicao followed up with a goal just before the final whistle. 

Denmark 2-2 (5-6 on pens) Germany

It took just three minutes for Wahidullah Faghir to make an impact for Denmark.

The 17-year-old came off the bench and struck in the 69th minute when Carlo Holse crossed to him in the box and he blasted into the net.

Germany tried to get back into the game by bringing on forward Karim Adeyemi for Ridle Baku but it was Lukas Nmecha who got the equaliser.

Jonathan Burkardt chested down a cross and queued up a shot to give Germany the lead 10 minutes into extra time. 

Their advantage was short-lived, however, as Denmark were awarded a penalty after the break, which was convected by Victor Nelsson, sending the game into a shootout.

Goalscorers Burkardt and Fagir both missed their penalties as the shootout went into sudden death.

It was Victor Kristansen who missed the crucial spot kick as Paul Jaeckel scored the next one for Germany to send his side through.

Sergio Aguero’s move to Barcelona will help ‘pacify’ Lionel Messi following the abrupt exit of Luis Suarez from the Camp Nou giants, according to Samuel Olatunji-Okuku.

After a trophy-laden spell at Manchester City – where he starred for over 10 years – the Argentina international joined the La Liga side as a free agent.

The 32-year-old’s arrival at the Catalan side could see him play alongside national teammate Messi whose contract expired this summer.

Voicing his opinion on Aguero’s Spanish elite division, the well-respected African football administrator says the move is a good one, and claims that would help console the six-time Ballon d'Or winner after the unceremonious departure of his friend Suarez.

“They [Barcelona] have been making some bad decisions lately. But of course, getting Aguero on a free is not a very bad deal for sure,” Olatunji-Okuku told Goal.

“Aguero going to a club like Barcelona too at the age of 32 is not a very bad move either.

“Joining Messi there is nothing but just a reunion of two very good friends who have played at all levels together except at club level which they’re finally going to be able to do.

“And for me, it’s going to be a way of pacifying him to stay after they left a bittersweet taste in his mouth after ejecting his very good friend unceremoniously last summer. Talking about Luis Suarez.”

Suarez, who won 13 trophies at Barca, joined Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid in a €6 million move after he was shipped out of Camp Nou.

Known for his predatory instinct in front of goal, the Citizens legend has been backed to re-enact his goalscoring feat at Barcelona baring any injury.

“I expect Aguero to score at least 20 goals a season for the next two years,” he continued.

“He’s just 32. And the older these strikers get the better for them. Also, looking at the Spanish league that doesn’t require a lot of physicality unlike England, he will surely bang in a lot of goals.

“Of course, his injury record of late is not very encouraging, however, I expect that to change due to the difference in the style of play of both leagues.

“The most important thing for him is to stay fit as much as possible. If Aguero is fit and on the field, you’re almost guaranteed he would score.”

Fiorentina star Christian Kouame has denied speculation about a likely move to Premier League outfit, stating he is happy at the Italian elite division side.

The Cote d’Ivoire international endured a tough 2020-21 Italian elite division campaign – scoring once in 33 league outings for the Stadio Artemio Franchi outfit.

Despite a below-par season, the 23-year-old has been linked with a move to Wolves. In a chat with BBC Sport , the striker claimed he is not aware of the rumours in the Italian media.

"I have heard of it too, but my agent didn't say anything to me really," Kouame said.

"I have just put a strange year behind me, I know I could have done more and I am very happy in Florence.

"Everyone welcomed me with open arms; the city is beautiful and my wife and son are here with me. The club will have to tell me they don't need me anymore, otherwise, I am happy to stay.

"One day in the future I would like to play in another country though."

On the international scene, the former Genoa player will be aiming to impress national team selectors in a bid to make the squad for the Tokyo Olympics in June.

"When I injured my knee and returned to Italy and underwent surgery, I was so sad to leave my teammates behind," he continued.

"We all want to take part in the tournament. The Olympics are a unique event and an opportunity which normally comes up once in a lifetime."

"We have been drawn in a group with Brazil, Germany and Saudi Arabia, we know it won't be easy but we want to prove ourselves.

"I have spoken to Junior Traore from (Italian club) Sassuolo, we are good friends.

"We will meet at the training camp and hope together for a call-up for Tokyo. I also know (Manchester United's) Amad Diallo, he's also a very good player; any good player is welcome because we need everyone's help!"

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has promised Sergio Aguero will be the first of "a series" of new arrivals this summer.

The 32-year-old striker was unveiled as a Barca player on Monday having signed a two-year contract.

The summer window is shaping up as an eventful one at Camp Nou as they look to recover from a disappointing season in which they finished third in La Liga and were knocked out of the second round of the Champions League.

What did Laporta say?

Laporta is confident Aguero will help strengthen his side ahead of the 2021-22 campaign and insists there will be more additions to coach Ronald Koeman's squad.

"We told Koeman we were trying to sign Kun Aguero, any coach would want to have him in their squad," Laporta said at a press conference.

"Kun's signing is important because he is an exceptional player, he plays in a position that is very important in any system and in ours too.

"We want him in a competitive team, we also want Leo [Messi] to stay and he knows that...he is the first of a series of signings you will see in the coming month."

What about Koeman?

The relationship between the club and Koeman has hit a snag in recent weeks.

Laporta said last week that they will have talks with the 58-year-old to decide if he will stay in charge next season. The president also said that Koeman, who suffered a heart attack last year, recently ended up in hospital after an "episode", a revelation the coach and his agent did not like.

Koeman responded by saying he is in good health, while his management accused Barca of treating him unfairly by suggesting he could be sacked.

Laporta suggested the former Netherlands boss will remain in charge, but insists they must evaluate where their campaign went wrong. 

"We said that we were opening a period of reflection about Koeman, we have to evaluate what went well and not so well last season," he said.

"The wish is to respect the contract, bringing together criteria which we need to talk about still.

"We will continue with the period of reflection with Koeman then in a week or 10 days we will decide.

"We are going to see how the conversations with Koeman develop. They are going very well, but we need a little more time."

Who else could Barcelona sign?

The Catalan club are reportedly close to signing Memphis Depay and Georginio Wijnaldum this summer.

The pair of Netherlands internationals are available for free after reaching the end of their contracts at Lyon and Liverpool, respectively.

Eric Garcia is also on his way back to Camp Nou from Manchester City in a free transfer.

Meanwhile, Brazilian full-back Emerson is on the verge of joining from Real Betis in a deal worth €9 million (£8m/$11m).

Barca are also hoping to convince Lionel Messi to sign a new contract before his current one runs out this summer.

Ghana's announcement of a new assistant coach for CK Akonnor has not been received well by many fans.

On Monday, the Football Association, in a publication on its official website said Dutch coach Patrick Greveraars has been appointed as the second assistant, joining David Duncan.

According to the football governing body, the new coach, who has already touched down in Ghana, has been brought in on the request of Akonnor.

Somehow, many seem to doubt the GFA's words, as previous media reports have said the body was looking to see the back of the former Wolfsburg captain.

Akonnor's future has been cast in doubt since he reportedly expressed unhappiness about the influence of FA executives in his squad selections ahead of an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe in March.

Former Ghana international Anthony Baffoe has praised Asisat Oshoala as Barcelona completed their treble on Sunday.

Lluis Cortes’ women won their third title of the 2020-21 campaign after defeating Levante 4-2 in the Copa de la Reina final.

The Blaugranes had won the Uefa Women’s Champions and Primera Division diadem for a record sixth time earlier this season.

In the six-goal thriller, the reigning African Women’s Player of the Year was an unused substitute, albeit, her compatriot Francisca Ordega was introduced in the 85th minute for Maria Pry’s team.

In a social media post, the Confederation of African Football’s deputy secretary-general for football and development saluted the 26-year-old, stating that Africa is ‘proud’ of her.

Following Barcelona’s 4-0 defeat of Chelsea at the Gamla Ullevi, Gothenburg, Oshoala became the first Nigerian as well as the first African to win the Uefa Women’s Champions League.

In a chat with BBC Sport, the Super Falcons’ skipper revealed that helping the Spanish side to win the treble for the first time in their history has made her thirst for more silverware.

"Once is a nice achievement, but it has given me and my teammates a taste of success and we want more of that," said Oshoala.

"You can never limit yourself when you go out there to play professionally, especially outside of the continent because you carry more than your nation on your shoulder.

Sergio Aguero says he has wanted to join Barcelona since he was a child and did not hesitate to accept their offer.

The Argentina international had been linked with a move to Camp Nou for months before signing a contract with the club on Monday after leaving Manchester City.

The striker says it has been his dream since the age of 14 to join Barca and is delighted to make the return to Spain.

"I am very happy, I will try to do my best for the club, help the team win important things. It is an immense joy," he said at a press conference following his unveiling as a Barcelona player.

"For me, Barca has always been the best team in the world and Leo [Messi] is also there.

"I told [president Joan] Laporta before that as a boy I said: 'One day they will surely notice me.' And here I am. I didn't imagine it, but anyone runs to sign for Barca."

He added: "When Barca asked about me, I didn't even hesitate. I told my agent that I didn't want him to talk to another team, only Barca.

"It was an immense joy when they contacted my agent. I've been interested since I was 14 years old."

Will Aguero play with Messi?

The 32-year-old's arrival at Camp Nou could see him play alongside his national team-mate Messi.

But the six-time Ballons d'Or winner could still leave the club this summer when his contract expires.

But Aguero hopes Messi decides to stay and is optimistic about the chances of that happening.

"We hope to play together, of course. But we have been negotiating for a long time, these are decisions that Leo will make with the club. It will be a pleasure and pride to play together.

"I have known him for a long time and I think he will stay."

He continued: "I speak [to Messi] every day, in the last message he congratulated me. We have known each other for a long time and for me playing now and training with him every day is going to be much easier."

How long has Aguero signed on for at Barca?

The former Atletico Madrid star has signed a contract that runs until summer 2023.

Edouard Mendy is among the players named in the 2020-21 Champions League Squad of the Season, with Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez excluded from the 23-man team.

Reactions to Sergio Aguero’s move from Manchester City to Barcelona have been mixed.

After 10 years with the English side, the Argentina international has crossed carpet to Spain where he will play with the Blaugrana for the next two years.

The move, announced by Barcelona on Monday, comes only two days after he featured for City in their 1-0 loss to Chelsea in the Champions League final.

Simba SC have come out to deny reports they are interested to sign winger Carlos Carlinhos who left rivals Yanga SC on Monday.

The Angolan star was allowed to leave the Jangwani giants after demanding the same and immediately reports went around that their rivals Simba were interested in his services.

Simba information Officer Haji Manara has dismissed the reports as baseless explaining the young player cannot play for them.

“Carlinhos playing in the Caf Champions League is impossible, that can’t happen,” Manara is quoted as saying by Sokalabongo.

Goal exclusively reported on Monday the Angolan player, who signed for the Jangwani giants from Angola Premier League side Interclube, had already handed in a request to the club’s management wishing to terminate the deal he signed when he joined on September 6, 2020.

Yanga later confirmed in a signed statement they have released the player and wished him well in his next move.

“The management of Yanga wishes to confirm they have reached a mutual agreement to terminate the contract of Carlos [Carlinhos] from Angola with immediate effect,” read part of the statement from the club and obtained by Goal.

“The decision has been reached after the player approached the club’s management and requested to be released and after holding talks between the two parties involved, they have agreed to end the deal on mutual ways.

“Yanga will like to thank Carlinhos for his dedication towards the club while he was with us and also wish him well in his next move outside Yanga.”

Carlinhos started his season well in the Mainland Premier League but was later plagued by injuries that kept him out of action for some time.

He leaves the club after managing three assists to his name and had also scored the same number of goals, and was involved in a total of six goals scored by Yanga in this campaign.

Carlinhos made history by being greeted by a large crowd as he arrived in Tanzania to sign the deal and was carried in an open car accompanied by a convoy of vehicles that drove him from Julius Nyerere Airport to Yanga Headquarters, Jangwani Street and he later burst into tears saying he had never been received like that before.

Dutch coach Patrick Greveraars has been appointed Ghana’s new assistant coach, the Football Association has announced.

According to a publication on the GFA’s official website, the 45-year-old has been brought on board to the Black Stars' technical team on the request of head coach CK Akonnor.

His appointment takes Akonnor’s assistants to two, with David Duncam already in.

“The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association has agreed to the request of CK Akonnor for the appointment of a second assistant coach to further strengthen the technical team of the Black Stars,” says the football governing body.

“The new coach, Patrick Greveraars is a Uefa A-License holder with over 25 years of worldwide top football experience.

“The 45-year-old previously worked with PSV Eindhoven, FC Porto, Vitesse Arnhem, Feyenoord Rotterdam, Anorthosis Famagusta and Al Shabab Dubai.

“Patrick Greveraars is one of two coaches who were recommended by CK Akonnor in his quest to strengthen the technical team ahead of the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers and the 2020 Africa Cup of Nations.”

Ghana are leaving no stone unturned in their quest to qualify for the 2022 World Cup and win the delayed 2020 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon next year.

As part of preparations, the Black Stars, currently in camp, are set to take on Morocco and Cote d’Ivoire in friendly matches next month.

“He [Graveraars] is expected to bring his experience, worldwide contacts and football methodology on board if he signs the deal,” the GFA statement added.

“Greveraars is currently in Ghana to assist the team with the upcoming international friendly matches and also to finalize talks ahead of his appointment.

“He will team up with coach CK Akonnor and David Duncan in Cape Coast to prepare for the friendly matches.

“The Black Stars are currently camping in Cape Coast to prepare for the two matches against Morocco on Tuesday, June 8 and Ivory Coast in Cape Coast on Saturday, June 12, 2021.”

After the June set of friendlies, Ghana return to action in September when they take on Ethiopia and South Africa in their first two games of the World Cup qualifiers.

Victor Moses has been honoured with the Spartak Moscow Player of the Month award for May.

The Chelsea loanee played a vital role in helping Domenico Tedesco's side finish second in the Russian Premier League table with his contribution of two assists and a goal in the month under review.

On May 3, the 30-year-old helped Spartak Moscow secure a 2-1 victory over Arsenal Tula with his assists for Alexander Sobolev and Jordan Larsson in the 21st and 76th minutes respectively.

Two weeks later, he followed it up with a crucial goal that earned the People's Team a 2-2 draw against Akhmat Grozny which secured their ticket for next season's Champions League qualification round.

The point earned at Grozny helped Spartak finish the league campaign with 57 points after 30 matches, one above their city rivals Lokomotiv Moscow.

In addition to his defensive contributions, Moses scored four goals with two assists in 20 Premier League games this season.

Regarding his future, Goal understands Moses will now complete a permanent move from Chelsea to Spartak Moscow after meeting a series of clauses in his loan contract.

The permanent move is set to be around £4 million ($5.6m) and it will end Moses' nine-year stay at Stamford Bridge where he has enjoyed several successes in the Premier League, FA Cup and the Europa League.

Safa has stated they have no qualms with Stuart Baxter returning to South Africa despite the Englishman’s widely-condemned comments in February.

Baxter has been heavily linked with a second stint at Kaizer Chiefs, to replace Gavin Hunt who was fired last Friday following a string of poor results. 

In India, Baxter got in trouble for making the following statement about his former Indian Premier League players at Odisha FC. 

“You need decisions to go your way and we needed a penalty. I think one of my players would have to rape someone or get raped himself if he was going to get a penalty,” Baxter said in February after Odisha lost to Jamshedpur FC. 

Together with Odisha’s poor results, the remarks contributed to Baxter’s sacking as the club moved in to “unreservedly” apologise for what the Englishman had said. 

But Safa chief executive officer Tebogo Motlanthe said they have no reservations about Baxter’s utterances and will not object to him coaching in South Africa. 

“That [Baxter] matter was put to rest a long time ago when Stuart Baxter apologised and said it was out of context,” said Motlanthe as per Phakaaathi.

“And the Indian association closed that matter. From an official standpoint, we do not have any issue. Remember that even with Luc we acted because Tanzania reported it directly to us. They said this is what has happened, this is what Luc has said and they sent us all the evidence. India has not sent us anything.”

At the time Baxter was fired by Odisha, the team was anchoring the standings, having won just once in 14 league matches, all under the former Bafana Bafana coach, who joined them in June 2020.

Since then, they never recovered from the basement until football was suspended in India in March due to the coronavirus.

With Argentina and Colombia unable to fulfil their commitments as hosts of the 2021 Copa America due to civil unrest and Covid-19 concerns, Brazil has stepped in to stage elite continental competition.

With the coronavirus pandemic continuing to cause havoc in South America, and Colombia dealing with anti-government protests, there was a very real threat at one stage that an event which has already been pushed back once would need to be rescheduled again.

CONMEBOL has, however, taken decisive action and announced that the hosts of the 2019 tournament will be stepping up again in an hour of need.

An official statement reads: "The CONMEBOL Copa America 2021 will be played in Brazil! 

"Tournament start and end dates are confirmed.

"The venues and the fixture list will be informed by CONMEBOL in the next few hours. 

"The oldest national team tournament in the world will thrill the entire continent!"

When will the 2021 Copa America take place?

The competition was initially due to take place in June 2020 but was delayed by 12 months due to the coronavirus outbreak and subsequent lockdowns that were put in place.

Argentina and Colombia were prepared to be patient, but they have ended up missing out regardless.

Brazil will now stage the 47th Copa America between June 13 and July 10.

They are also holders of a prestigious international prize, having seen off Peru 3-1 to claim a memorable home soil success two years ago.

Who is taking part?

Brazil will be joined by the national sides of Argentine and Colombia despite their respective nations being unable to stage fixtures.

Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay complete the 10-team competition.

Australia and Qatar had initially been invited to make guest appearances, but they have had to withdraw due to the rescheduling of 2022 World Cup qualification fixtures in Asia.

Sergio Aguero will join Barcelona on a free transfer following his departure from Manchester City.

The 32-year-old underwent a medical at Camp Nou on Monday before signing a two-year contract with the Blaugrana.

Barca moved for Aguero after City's decision to let the striker go at the end of his contract, bringing to an end his trophy-laden ten-year spell in Manchester.

Barca took the decision to sell star striker Luis Suarez to Atletico Madrid last summer without signing a replacement, which left Lionel Messi shouldering the main goalscoring burden for the team in 2020-21.

Barca will hope that Aguero can have a similar impact next season, despite the fact that the Argentine struggled for form and fitness during his final campaign at Etihad Stadium.

Aguero is set to link up with his international team-mate and close friend Messi at Camp Nou, and they will be expected to strike up a strong partnership as the Blaugrana aim to return to elite level on both domestic and European fronts.

It was no surprise that South America's showpiece continental tournament Copa America, initially due to be played in summer 2020, was postponed following the outbreak of Covid-19.

However, following ongoing anti-government protests, Colombia was stripped of Copa America hosting rights, while Argentina's hosting rights were suspended after a surge in Covid-19 cases in the country.

Chile was touted as a potential alternative host country and seems the most likely destination if the tournament is not delayed. The United States was also suggested as a possible venue.

This summer's Copa America tournament will only see 10 CONMEBOL nations competing against one another, as guest nations Australia and Qatar withdrew. The sides are split into two groups of five, with the top four qualifying for the quarter-final stage.

CONMEBOL will not cancel Copa America 2021, with Brazil being selected as a replacement host nation.

The decision to drop Argentina as a host nation came on May 30, two weeks before the competition is set to begin on June 13, so CONMEBOL had a short window to find a replacement.
