Transfer news and rumours LIVE: Tottenham eye Pope as PSG push for Lloris

The upcoming CONCACAF Nations League looks set to be the teenager's last taste of international football this summer

United States national team prodigy Giovanni Reyna will not be cleared to contest the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Borussia Dortmund confirmed on Tuesday.

The 18-year-old is already a key player for both club and country, having starred for Dortmund throughout the 2020-21 season.

But, while he is currently on international duty for the USMNT, he will be expected to report back to Dortmund once the CONCACAF Nations League comes to a close.

What was said?

"Maybe Gio Reyna will join [the squad] a few days later, but then we will be counting on him," Sebastian Kehl, head of the Dortmund players' department, explained to Ruhr Nachrichten.

"He won't contest the Gold Cup."

The bigger picture

The USMNT are involved in two different tournaments this summer.

Reyna joined up with his international team-mates following the close of the Bundesliga season in order to play in the Nations League, which plays its delayed semi-final and final stages on June 3 and 6 respectively.

The USMNT take on Honduras in the last four, with the winner meeting either Mexico or Costa Rica in the final.

Just over a month later the Gold Cup group stage begins, with the US drawn alongside Canada, Martinique and a still to be determined preliminary qualifier.

Based in the US, the competition runs until the final on August 1 - less than two weeks prior to the start of the Bundesliga season.

Reyna, therefore, would miss almost the entire pre-season period at Dortmund should he reach the final with his country, clearly an unappetising prospect for the club.

Back in February, USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter suggested that he would not call on his stars to play in both competitions.

“One thing I can guarantee you is a guy like Christian Pulisic is not going to be playing Nations League and Gold Cup – it's not going to happen," he explained to Extra Time.

"These guys need a break, so I can imagine them playing one of those tournaments and then getting rest. That's going to be true for a lot of our guys who are going through similar situations right now.”

Barcelona can only re-sign Neymar when his PSG contract expires, says presidential candidate

The Three Lions have announced their final selection that will go in search of major international glory this summer

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been called up for England's European Championship squad while Jesse Lingard is among those to have missed out, with Gareth Southgate whittling his selection down from 33 to 26.

There were always going to be seven men left disappointed and, after Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood withdrew through injury, final decisions have now been made.

Lingard misses out despite an impressive half-season on loan at West Ham, while James Ward-Prowse, Ollie Watkins, Mason Greenwood, Ben Godfrey, Ben White and Aaron Ramsdale have also not been selected.

Who has missed out?

Liverpool full-back Alexander-Arnold was a notable absentee from the England squad during the March international break, when 2022 World Cup qualification got underway.

He was included in Southgate's preliminary plans this time around however, and after much speculation, has made it to this summer's tournament.

Lingard is another to have missed the cut, with a productive loan spell at London Stadium not enough to keep him in contention.

The Manchester United playmaker, who could be on the move again this summer, formed part of a memorable run to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals but will not be at the tournament this year.

His Old Trafford colleague Greenwood announced prior to Southgate's final reveal that he would not be figuring at the Euros as he seeks to "fully recover from an underlying injury."

Southampton midfielder Ward-Prowse has also been given bad news, preventing him from adding to his six caps, while Sheffield United No 1 Ramsdale has failed to secure one of the three goalkeeper spots.

Aston Villa striker Watkins, who scored on his Three Lions debut earlier this year in a 2022 World Cup qualifier against San Marino, is absent despite an impressive season at Villa Park.

White and Godfrey complete the list of those to have been trimmed by Southgate, but time is on the side of the promising Brighton and Everton defenders when it comes to earning senior international recognition.

Who makes the cut?

Along with Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool and Manchester United captains Jordan Henderson and Harry Maguire are kept on despite nursing injuries towards the end of the 2020-21 season at club level.

Aston Villa skipper Jack Grealish is another lacking in full match sharpness, but his creativity is being embraced after returning to action in mid-May.

Champions League winners Reece James, Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount should be full of confidence on the back of their European exploits with Chelsea.

John Stones, Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling suffered continental heartache with Manchester City, but get an immediate opportunity to chase down more silverware.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin will provide a back-up striking option behind captain Harry Kane, while Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham will be hoping that England are still involved on his 18th birthday on June 29.

England's Euro 2020 squad in full:

England's upcoming fixtures

Southgate's side have two friendlies to take in before competitive action begins.

The first of those will see Austria faced on Wednesday, followed by a home date with Romania on Sunday.

A European Championship campaign will open against Croatia on June 13, before then going on to tackle Scotland and the Czech Republic in their remaining Group D fixtures.

The deadlock continues as East Bengal officials decide not to sign the final agreement...

The deadlock between East Bengal and their investor Shree Cement remains never-ending as on Tuesday, the executive committee members of the club decided to not sign the final agreement of the joint venture which was to be formed between the two parties.

The executive committee of the club met on Tuesday evening and discussed at length the differences between the initial term sheet which was signed and the final agreement as claimed by the club officials.

East Bengal's football secretary Saikat Ganguly, in a statement, informed that the executive committee in unison has decided not to sign the final binding agreement and if they are pressurised to do so then the entire committee will resign.

What did Saikat Ganguly say?

"We had our executive committee meeting today. We discussed in detail all the points and differences which exist between the term sheet and the definitive document with Shree Cement. All the executive committee members were aware of all these points, yet we discussed them at length.

"Every member of the committee has agreed that they will not sign the definitive document in its current form. Also, the committee has decided that if they are forced to sign this document under any kind of pressure then everyone is ready to resign.

"Our club general secretary has also agreed with the decision of the executive committee and he has conveyed the decision to the club president. Even the president has informed that nobody has to sign anything at the moment. As the president, he is monitoring the issue and he will hold necessary discussions. But he has honoured the general sentiment of the executive committee," stated Ganguly.

What is going on in East Bengal?

After Quess Corp parted ways with East Bengal in June 2020 after being the club's investor for two seasons, Shree Cement came on board as their new investors which facilitated the club's move to the Indian Super League (ISL).

They then proceeded to establish a joint venture named Shree Cement East Bengal Foundation, in which the cement giants held 76 per cent stakes while the club had 24.

After Shree Cement's arrival, a term sheet was signed by both parties in September 2020 in the presence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who had played an important role in bringing the company on board as the club's new investor.

Based on the term sheet, the club’s sporting rights as well all its assets and properties (including intellectual) were reportedly transferred to the newly formed joint venture between the two parties.

Even though the term sheet has been signed, a final binding agreement of the deal is yet to signed by the officials despite multiple reminders.

The club officials have remained firm on the claim that certain points in the final agreement are different from the term sheet that the parties had signed. The new management, on the other hand, claims otherwise.

Shree Cement managing Hari Mohan Bangur also mentioned in the past that no meeting with the officials will take until they put pen to paper.

What is the Shree Cement management saying?

A  senior official of the Shree Cement East Bengal management informed Goal, that the management will only decide its next course of action once they receive an official letter from the club. The senior official further stated that according to the club, only the assistant general secretary, Rupak Saha is authorised to speak on behalf of the club. So Saikat Ganguly's statement in this matter cannot be taken into consideration.

All eyes on Recopa and Independiente's 15-year-old wonderkid Kendry Paez

Goal readers believed it is time the Nigeria international left King Power Stadium for a new challenge

Goal readers have overwhelmingly urged Wilfred Ndidi to leave Leicester City for top European clubs in the summer.

The midfielder has been with the Foxes since the summer of 2017 when he teamed up with the club from Genk.

The 24-year-old has been delivering consistent performances for the Premier League side since his arrival and has finished in the top three of the best tacklers of the season a number of times.

In the 2020-21 campaign, he was one of the stand-out performers for Brendan Rodgers' men as they finished among the top-five, narrowly missing out on the Champions League.

His effort also ensured the Foxes clinched the FA Cup title for the first time in the history of the club, featuring in six games in the run to the triumph.

The midfielder made 36 appearances, scoring one goal and providing four assists as part of his contribution to the campaign.

In a poll set up by Goal, readers have expressed their opinions regarding the future of the Nigeria international.

1014 votes were cast and 71.8 percent voted in favour that the defensive midfielder should leave the Foxes and embrace a bigger challenge.

The readers believed the Super Eagles star will be a good addition to Manchester United, Arsenal or Real Madrid.

28.2 percent, however, feel Ndidi should remain at King Power Stadium to continue to enjoy consistent playing time as he might not be guaranteed first-team action at top European clubs.

Former Nigeria international Dosu Joseph had previously backed the midfielder to move to a big club when the opportunity comes.

“We are all praying to grow. We are all hoping to play for the bigger clubs in the world. He has been doing well for Leicester City,” the former goalkeeper told Goal.

“If Real Madrid, Manchester United, Manchester City and other big clubs come, I think he can leave Leicester.

“All he has to do is to keep on playing well so that other big clubs can come for him.”

Ndidi will be expected to link up with the Super Eagles in Austria ahead of their international friendly against Cameroon on Friday.

Southgate has plenty of questions to answer ahead of Euros

The Scotland international is enjoying his time working with the Gunners boss, with his game taken to greater heights

Kieran Tierney believes he has improved all aspects of his game over the last 18 months, with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta considered to be a driving force behind that development.

Injuries have stunted the Scotland international's progress at times, but a standing as a key man at Emirates Stadium has been taken up at just 23 years of age.

There is still plenty of potential to unlock in the buccaneering left-back, with Tierney of the opinion that Arteta - who has faced questions of his ongoing presence in north London - is the man to lift Arsenal to greater heights.

What has been said?

Tierney, who is readying himself for European Championship duty this summer, told the Scottish Sun of playing under Arteta: "I listen to everything the manager tells me, word for word.

"I love working with him, he’s helped me massively.

"If you can see the differences in my game in the last 18 months or so it’s because of Mikel Arteta and what his coaching staff have been telling me to do.

"I’ve been working on their advice every day. I’m really grateful for what the gaffer’s done for me."

The bigger picture

Tierney's prominent standing on a Premier League stage is ensuring that added responsibility must also be taken on when donning the colours of his country.

The former Celtic defender has no issue with that, with his current manager helping to raise confidence to a level that has the hard-working full-back pushing for a place among the global elite.

Tierney added on the message he has received heading into a major international tournament: "I had a meeting with the Arsenal manager and he just told me, ‘Go and express yourself with Scotland, enjoy yourself, bring energy to the team, bring energy to the camp’.

"He’s always so supportive of me, and tremendously positive. The manager always brings the best out of me.

"With regards Scotland for the Euros he also said, ‘Give everything you have, that’s how you get the best out of yourself, and it will help the team the most’."

Rooney, Lineker & England's all-time leading goalscorers

Ghana international Christian Atsu has announced his departure from Newcastle United after five years at the club.

The winger leaves the Magpies after seeing out his contract.

It marks an end to a frustrating last 12 months, where he was frozen out of the first team and had to take a place with the second team. Consequently, he played no part of the club's Premier League campaign in the just-ended season.

"When I arrived in Newcastle almost five years ago, I was made to feel welcomed from the start, by everyone at the club and especially by the fans. I grew to love the city and my young family feel at home here," Atsu posted on social media on Tuesday.

"Sadly, the time has come for me to leave the club, so I just want to say a big thank you to everyone who is part of the Newcastle United family.

"Thank you to the Toon Army fans, a lot of whom I have met around the city.

"I will never forget my time in the North East and for sure I'll follow the results every week. Thank you my geordie staff, players and fans. It's been a pleasure."

Atsu joined Newcastle from Chelsea in 2016, initially on loan during the former's time in the English second tier.

With 32 Championship appearances and five goals to help the club qualify for the Premier League, the attacker did enough to impress the Magpies, who moved to make his stay at St James Park permanent, signing him on a four-year contract.

He appeared 28 times in each of the club's first two seasons on their return to the elite division before seeing his numbers drop to 19 in the 2019-20 term.

Last season, things changed for the 29-year-old when he was left out of the registered squad at the start of the Premier League season.

In January, he was lucky to be reinstated to the squad but still found himself on the sidelines as he failed to make the matchday squad for any of the games.

Away from the first team, the former Everton and Bournemouth man played six times for the second team and scored once.

The story behind Liverpool's badge

The teenage defender is aware of the speculation he continues to generate, but claims to be paying little attention to it

Nuno Mendes is aware of the rumours linking him with Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United, but the Sporting starlet is paying little attention to the speculation.

The 18-year-old left-back, who made the Goal NXGN list for 2021, has been catching the eye of leading clubs across Europe.

A high-profile transfer is expected to form part of his short-term future, but the youngster is eager to avoid making that leap too soon when there is still so much for him to learn.

What has been said?

Quizzed on the interest being shown in him by Record, Mendes has said: "I have to improve a lot, I'm not a perfect player yet, far from it, I still have a lot to improve.

"Now I can't say what I have to improve, but I have a lot to improve, I'm still young and I have a lot to learn.

"I am not an elite player but I am working for that and I started to realise that I had to do things more rigorously from the juniors onwards.

"From then on I was always a strict player in training and games, all of this was important to me and I am being rewarded. Now it has to continue."

He added on the rapid progress made to this point: "It is the result of my work and that of my Sporting colleagues who have helped me a lot since training until now.

"My colleagues help me a lot and I like that. I like to learn and listen and this is important for a player."

The bigger picture

Mendes took in 35 appearances for Sporting in the 2020-21 campaign and has been named in Fernando Santos' 26-man Portugal squad for this summer's European Championship.

He is about to step into another prominent shop window, but the youngster maintains that no thought is being given to making an imminent move elsewhere.

The talented teenager has added: "I’m a Sporting player and I’m going to continue to be so I’m not thinking about that.

"I’m more focused on the Euros and helping out the team."

Mendes is said to have a £61 million ($87m) release clause in his contract, although the general consensus is that any suitors could get him for less than that if a transfer scramble were to be sparked.

Chelsea 'agree to sign' Jerome Boateng from Bayern Munich

The former Bafana Bafana head coach is well suited to developing youth, having coached various junior national teams in South Africa

New Kaizer Chiefs technical director and head of youth Molefi Ntseki says he feels at home at the club due to his ties to the Motaung family.

Ntseki was on Monday confirmed as the club’s new technical director and head of development, a position which in theory could keep him with Chiefs for some time - the position not necessarily being as unstable as that of a head coach.

“From outside, every kid, every player, every administrator, every coach, we are all looking forward to be part of this brand,” Ntseki told Chiefs' media upon his arrival at Naturena.

“I think when I came in here, it’s a very conducive atmosphere, a very professional atmosphere. As you are driving through the gates, the people you meet at the gates that you speak to, they know who you are.

“Everything is very professional from the first gate that you go through, until you get to the boardroom. So it’s been a very warm welcome, and by the way, we should remember that we are talking of love and peace.”

If things go to plan, it could be a perfect fit between Amakhosi and Ntseki, who has revealed that he belongs to the same clan as the club owners, the Motaung family.

“The Motaungs have done very well to bring all of us together and to make us all one big happy family. Irrespective of your role and position at the club, we all belong to this happy big family which is Kaizer Chiefs,” he added.

“I am a Sotho, my home language is Sesotho. I am Motaung Ramokhele, which is the third clan of the Motaungs.

“The first clan is Motaung wa ha hlalele, which is the leadership of this club. And the second one is Motaung wa ha Moletsane, so I’m the third of the clan of the Motaungs.

“So coming in here it feels good. Because I am a traditional person, a cultural person, I come from that background. So I already feel at home, being a Motaung.

“I’m very happy to be part of the Motaungs, because I’m on top of the mountain. And being on top of the mountain, it means that I can see the whole world.”

'Orlando Pirates are tired and angry, Baroka FC have more energy' - Matsimela

The Buccaneers' bid to secure a place in Africa next season is again under threat from another mid-table side

Baroka FC coach Thoka Matsimela feels that they are in better standing, fitness-wise and psychologically, than Orlando Pirates ahead of the two sides’ Premier Soccer League clash at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday.

The Limpopo side, ninth on the PSL table, host a Pirates side placed fourth and battling to secure a spot in the top three as they are tied on 46 points with Golden Arrows in third.

Matsimela says they would want to take advantage of the Soweto giants who, of late, have been involved in a punishing fixture schedule and are reeling from the frustration of losing to TS Galaxy last Sunday.

“We have not played for more than a week, so we believe we have more energy than them and we have to use it in the match against Pirates,” Matsimela told SowetanLive.

“They will play three matches in less than seven days, which will be difficult for them as you have seen some players were limping against Galaxy and I believe they will be tired.  But we still need to work hard. We know Pirates have quality players and can surprise you at any time.

“If you can relax and say they will be tired, we will get punished. We have to be ready for any player they will put [on the field]. It also gives us motivation going into this match that when a team loses, we think their spirit is still down and we must capitalise on that. Unlike when they've won and come with confidence and say we can win this one.

"They are angry and will be coming at us with all guns blazing.”

While Pirates are coming from a shock defeat in Mpumalanga, they come up against a Baroka team which has not lost in their last three matches.

The Limpopo outfit still has a chance to end the season in the top half as they are just two points behind eighth-placed TS Galaxy.

“We are ready for them and we saw how they play. We need to make sure we don’t lose the match as long as we are playing at home,” Matsimela said.

“If you look at both matches they played against AmaZulu and Galaxy, their approach is not the same. If you check their line-up, they changed in both games.

"They didn’t play the same in both fixtures. Against AmaZulu they had a lot of energy, but against Galaxy they didn’t show the same. Galaxy scored early in the match but Bucs failed to equalise and they were struggling.”

After facing Baroka in this penultimate league fixture of the season, Pirates host Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila in their final match of the campaign.

Jose Mourinho scoffs at style critics after Tottenham reach 100 goals in 2020/21

The Nigeria international won a Cup title with the Foxes but could not help his side book a place in the European competition

Wilfred Ndidi has revealed his displeasure after Leicester City failed to qualify for the 2021-22 Champions League.

The Foxes failed in their quest to play in the top European competition on the last day of the Premier League, where they lost to Tottenham Hotspur to finish fifth on the league table.

The Nigeria international had previously helped Brendan Rodgers’ men to win the FA Cup title and has expressed his disappointment on missing out on a place in the European competition.

"People with different opinions, every player wants to play in the Champions League if they have the opportunity but if you don't have the opportunity you see a Cup you have to grab it,” Ndidi told Super Sport Monday Night Football.

"We played the final before the Premier League matches, so we actually grabbed that one and we hoped for qualifying for the Champions League.

"It's not like we were just hoping to qualify for the Champions League and just let the FA Cup just go away like that.

"I'm very grateful that we grabbed that one but it wasn't possible for us to go to the Champions League."

Ndidi also expressed his delight with the performances of his compatriot and teammate Kelechi Iheanacho.

The centre-forward delivered spectacular performances in the 2020-21 season, scoring 19 goals and providing seven assists in 39 appearances.

"We all know Kelechi Iheanacho is a very good player. Right from the U17 he can score goals, he can make assists,” he continued.

"As a footballer not getting much time playing can actually reduce your confidence but I'm very happy he's back.

"I've always tried to encourage him, he's always giving his best in training but you could see Jamie Vardy is always there, running round the pitch.

"I just feel if Kelechi had the chance he would have actually done something that time when there was no chance for him to actually showcase but now he's doing everything I expected of him and we all know the kind of player he is and I'm very proud of him and happy to play in the same team with him."

The Super Eagles midfielder also praised the influence of Leicester manager Rodgers on his development at the club.

"Brendan Rodgers is a very good coach, he is tactical. He's a lovable coach, the players love him because he is not just a coach, he's also like a father figure to us players,” he added.

"He's very friendly, smiles, his door is always open for players. He has actually improved my game psychologically and on the pitch, understanding the game.

"He made me understand the position better and what he really needs me to do. He just wants me to be Wilfred Ndidi, allow Tielemans be Tielemans, Kelechi be Kelechi.

"I cannot do everything but I just need to do my own. Those things are actually adding to my game and then trying to make me better in so many aspects of the game.

"Everything boils down to the system Rodgers really wants for his players and the team.”

Wright picks out three players letting Arsenal down as Arteta reaches ‘crisis point’

Serie A giants are eager to keep a loan star on their books, while another centre-half at Stamford Bridge is set to stay in west London

AC Milan are in advanced talks with Chelsea regarding a permanent deal for Fikayo Tomori, Goal has learned, while the Rossoneri are also asking about Valentino Livramento.

An England international defender that has come through the academy ranks at Stamford Bridge spent the second half of the 2020-21 campaign on loan at San Siro.

Tomori did enough across 22 appearances to convince the Rossoneri that he is worth keeping around , with another deal now being sought.

What are the terms of the transfer?

Chelsea included a purchase option for Milan in the loan agreement that was struck back in January.

Serie A heavyweights were made aware that it would cost them £26 million ($37m) to keep the 23-year-old in Italy.

The Rossoneri would like to lower that asking price, or pay in full over a series of instalments.

Said discussions have been delaying a definitive decision being made, with talks still ongoing.

Alternative options

While Tomori remains Milan's priority, having already seen what he is capable of, alternative options are being explored.

Questions have been asked of whether Chelsea would be willing to part with highly-rated teenager Livramento.

The Blues are reluctant to sanction such a deal after seeing a promising 18-year-old scoop their academy Player of the Year award in 2020-21.

A versatile performer that can operate anywhere down the right flank does, however, see his path to the first-team in west London blocked by Reece James.

Tariq Lamptey left Chelsea for Brighton after finding opportunities hard to come by and Livramento faces a similar future poser.

A number of clubs are keeping a close eye on his situation, with permanent deals and loan arrangements potentially in the pipeline as a hot prospect enters the final year of his current contract.

Any other business?

Chelsea are well-stocked for defenders at present, although deals are expiring for some.

Kurt Zouma is among those to be mulling over his options, with the France international still struggling to nail down a regular starting berth.

He is willing to listen to offers, but will not be pushing for the exits just yet as he gears up for European Championship duty with his country.

Thiago Silva is among those to have kept Zouma out of Thomas Tuchel side at times this season, and the experienced Brazilian appears set to stick around.

His initial 12-month deal is coming to a close, but another year is expected to be put to a 36-year-old who helped the Blues to a top-four finish and Champions League glory during his debut campaign in England.

Ntseki: Kaizer Chiefs have resources to compete with world’s best

The former Bafana Bafana head coach was appointed on Monday, but the club are still to announce a new head coach after Gavin Hunt’s departure

Incoming Kaizer Chiefs technical director and head of youth development Molefi Ntseki has spoken of the importance of remaining true to the club’s rich heritage.

Ntseki’s role will be all encompassing and after Amakhosi's several years of underachievement he has a challenging job on his hands.

“It’s a very big role, with so much responsibility and functions. It calls for one to be very professional, it calls for one to very creative. It calls for one to have gone through the research,” he told Chiefs media.

“It calls for the understanding of who is Kaizer Chiefs. What is the culture, what is the philosophy of the club, the playing style.

“And I think that will be very important. Because if you come into a new position like this, it means you need to look back and get all the background information about the club.”

Nteski feels that Amakhosi should be making their mark not only on the continent, but globally.

“And also, take the club to a level where the modern trends of football are of prime importance. With a brand like this it’s important to compete with the best in Africa, to compete with the best in the world,” he said.

“Because we’ve got the resources to do that, we’ve got the leadership to do that. We have got everybody who is part of the project.

“And for the project you need to get the best people, the best players to make the senior team to be a winning team.

“The background, the history is so rich. You need to add more into what you see in terms of the bar that has been put up there for everybody who becomes part of this family.”

Asked about where his priorities will lie, he pointed to the youth, as well as to ensuring that the right people are appointed at the club, which will include the new head coach.

“It starts with grassroots, the development, the placement of the players up to the first team," the former Bafana Bafana coach continued.

“The most important thing is for us to understand the culture and the philosophy of the club and that has to be [installed] in the younger players.

“When you identify talent, the most important thing is that it must also identify with the brand. And it’s not only about talent, it’s also about personality.

“The coaches that we will be recruiting, those that are already in the team, it also has to do with the personality, the qualification, the knowledge and the creativity the understanding of Kaizer Chiefs and it’s culture and philosophy.”

'Guardiola stole the Champions League from the fans' - Man City boss deserves 'harsh criticism' for final selection, says Matthaus

The Bayern legend has questioned the Catalan's decision to omit Fernandinho and Rodri from his starting line-up against Chelsea

Pep Guardiola "stole the Champions League" from Manchester City supporters, according to Lothar Matthaus, who says the head coach deserves "harsh criticism" for his team selection in the final.

City suffered a painful 1-0 defeat to Chelsea in their first European Cup final appearance on Saturday, with a first-half effort from Kai Havertz proving to be the difference between the two sides.

Guardiola opted to start the match without Rodri or Fernandinho occupying a holding midfield role and Matthaus believes his job at Etihad Stadium could be under threat after seeing a major tactical risk backfire.

What's been said?

"With his line-up he stole the Champions League from the club and the fans and he has to rightly listen to the harsh criticism from all sides," the Bayern Munich legend said of Guardiola, who coached at Allianz Arena between 2012 and 2015, in his latest column for Sky Germany.

"I am sure that there will be internal discussions about whether to part with him. The players will doubt him since that final.

"He had to try something again, present an imaginary ingenuity at the worst possible moment and totally deserved to lose.

"How can you play without a defensive midfielder in the most important game in club history, who was on the pitch in almost every game of the season, who ensures the balance, who gives everyone involved the necessary security?

"Why did he leave Rodri and/or Fernandinho out, start six attacking players and also play without a centre-forward?"

Guardiola humbled by Tuchel

Guardiola was ultimately outwitted on the touchline at Estadio Do Dragao by Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, who set his team up in a close-knit 3-4-2-1 formation that restricted City's threat in the final third of the pitch.

The Blues were the better team from the first whistle as Ilkay Gundogan struggled to make the sort of impact he has in recent months, with N'Golo Kante and Jorginho often kickstarting attacks after breaking up play.

Timo Werner squandered two glorious chances to put Chelsea in front before Havertz made the breakthrough just before the interval, rounding Ederson and tapping into an empty net after racing onto a through ball from Mason Mount.

Guardiola brought on Fernandinho after the hour mark and reverted to a more familiar set-up in a bid to save the game, and Riyad Mahrez came close to a spectacular equaliser with a brilliant volley in stoppage time, but Tuchel's men ultimately held on for a famous victory.

The bigger picture

Guardiola may have failed to deliver City's first Champions League crown, but after taking the club further than ever before in the competition his place in the Etihad Stadium dugout will likely remain secure for another season.

The 50-year-old also added a third Premier League title and fourth successive Carabao Cup to his collection of silverware in England this season, and he signed a two-year contract extension last November which ties him to the club until 2023.

The Al Ahly coach has been a success in African football and is delighted with the recognition he received from South Africa's head of state

South African celebrated coach Pitso Mosimane has acknowledged President Cyril Ramaphosa's praise of his work, stating he is inspired by the head of state's words.

The Al Ahly tactician has been on the rise in African football, and recently he led the Egyptian giants to the Caf Super Cup after a 2-0 win over Morrocan side RS Berkane.

It is for this reason the South Africa President lauded him, stating he has unified people from diverse backgrounds.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach took to his Twitter account to thank the country's head for taking note of his achievements.

"The President has spoken," Mosimane, who also coached Bafana Bafana, tweeted.

"[Thank you] South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa for acknowledging my humble contribution to the continent. I am inspired by your words."

Meanwhile, Mosimane has revealed his long-standing desire to solve the contractual issue with Sundowns amicably, through a statement to the press.

Mosimane, through his agency, Moira Tlhagale Sports Marketing, and Management, has stated they have been trying to get in touch with the club's hierarchy to solve the dispute around his contract with his former club, but "have been met with silence".

"It is with a deep measure of shock and disappointment that MT Sports Marketing and Management has received a summons from Mamelodi Sundowns F.C demanding to be paid back commission fees in lieu of coach Pilso Mosimane," a statement by Mosimane's agency read on Monday.

"We have received communication from Mamelodi Sundowns and have attempted to reach an amicable solution to this matter. However, they have not responded to our request to meet with us.

"We attempted to speak to then club president Dr Patrice Motsepe in January this year, and we were refused and also last week with chairman Tlhopane Motsepe, we were met with silence."

The agency further revealed their displeasure at how the summons found its way to the media and added Mosimane's move to Egypt had the blessing of Sundowns owner Patrice Motsepe.

"The summons and the media leaks put into disrepute Dr Motsepe’s blessings on the termination of the contracts, and well-wishes on coach Pitso joining Al Ahly S.C last year," added the statement.

The French tactician spells out his plans for the Msimbazi giants in the new season but with the focus on retaining the league title

Simba SC coach Didier Gomes Da Rosa has identified two key areas he will work on to improve in the transfer window ahead of the new season.

The French tactician has revealed he is not considering making any major changes to his current squad but is considering making a couple of careful signings in the two areas within his squad.

What has been said?

“In my squad, if improvements can be made then personally my focus is on two areas, the central defender and the attacking midfielder, those are the areas I would like to add new signings,” Da Rosa told Goal.

“Simba is one of the best teams in the domestic league and international competitions and I am confident that next season we will do better this season.”

Da Rosa, who helped Simba to reach the quarter-finals of the Caf Champions League this campaign before losing 4-3 on aggregate to Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa, believes if the two signings are added to his squad, he will do better and the team will have more solid options.

“We will have to make sure we fix the two areas because it affected us especially when we played against Chiefs away and it is the reason I am more than focused to work on that,” Da Rosa continued.

“It will also give us more options to pick from and get ready for a grueling campaign.”

But before the signings, Da Rosa says his focus is to make sure Simba retain the Mainland Premier League and domestic cup titles.

“We don’t want to dwell much on signings now because we have a huge task ahead of us, we have the league title and domestic cup to defend and that is my target now, we don’t want to rest, we have to make sure the trophies remain with us," he concluded.

Simba have ten foreign players currently in their squad - Joash Onyango, Pascal Wawa, Taddeo Lwanga, Luis Miquissone, Clatous Chama, Larry Bwalya, Bernard Morrison, Chriss Mugalu, Meddie Kagere, and Perfect Chikwende.

The Wekundu wa Msimbazi, who are currently topping the 18-team table with 64 points from 24 matches, will next face Ruvu Shooting in a league match on Thursday.

Striker-whisperer Spalletti can set Osimhen alight as he did Totti, Dzeko, Icardi

The former Roma and Internazionale boss has a history of bringing the best out of strikers, and he could be the making of Napoli's Nigerian marksman

Napoli’s unfortunate stumble at the finish line in Serie A effectively put paid to the idea of Gennaro Gattuso continuing as manager.

The announcement of his departure came as a wrench to no one more than Victor Osimhen, who took to social media to serenade his former manager into the sunset.

The AC Milan legend, it will be remembered, championed the signing of the Nigeria international, and fought his corner several times as criticism of a stop-start season intensified.

Football, however, has little time for the touchy-feely.

On Saturday, the club announced the appointment of former Roma boss Luciano Spalletti, who has been out of work since being sacked by Inter in 2019.

He will be expected to get Napoli back into the Champions League for the first time in three years, while forging a clear tactical identity in a way Gattuso was unable to.

An unintended consequence of skyrocketing transfer fees is that, beyond merely getting results, managers are now judged on their ability to cater to high-priced assets.

The job brief now includes a part-time responsibility to essentially baby-sit – witness how, upon Frank Lampard’s sacking at Chelsea, part of the pitch for Thomas Tuchel to take over at Chelsea was that, being German, he would be better equipped to extract value from Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, both of whom had struggled to justify expensive outlays.

As such, another key performance index for Spalletti at Napoli will almost certainly be his ability to tap into Osimhen’s wellspring of ability and bring his potential bubbling to the surface.

While the 22-year-old certainly enjoyed the warmth and belief of Gattuso during the former AC Milan manager’s time at the helm at San Paolo, his debut season was more suggestive than definitive.

With his acclimation stunted by multiple injuries and two positive Covid-19 test results, Osimhen only really came into his own as a goalscorer in the season’s final throes.

While that late flurry was vital for his confidence (he eventually hit double figures), one can imagine he will not be granted the same allowances from the demanding Italian press and Napoli faithful if he does not hit the ground running.

He did, after all, cost a club – and African – record fee to acquire from Lille; more than Aurelio De Laurentiis sanctioned for the purchases of Edinson Cavani and Gonzalo Higuain, both of whom achieved legendary feats in Southern Italy before their departures.

Expecting a greater haul than 10 in Serie A is far from unreasonable.

Good thing then that Spalletti has, over the course of his career, been something of a striker-whisperer.

In his first spell as Roma boss, he revolutionized Italian football with a bold, 'strikerless' system that released club talisman Francesco Totti to have the best goalscoring season of his career. Er Pupone scored 26 goals to finish as capocannoniere in the 2006/07 season, and always won Europe’s Golden Shoe playing a nominal striker who was given license to start from deep.

At Zenit St Petersburg, Spalletti’s approach helped the returning Aleksandr Kerzhakov to 23 league goals in 2011/12.

The pair would eventually fall out, but it is instructive the Russian had never scored as much in a single league season before, and never did so again.

A second spell at Roma fired Edin Dzeko to 29 league goals (a career-best), before the Tuscan manager inspired Mauro Icardi to the same tally at Inter a season later – a career-best for the Argentina international as well.

What is perhaps most impressive about his success with centre-forwards is that these four forwards are stylistically quite different.

Totti, of course, was not a striker at all, but a silky, elegant creator who thrived between the lines; Kerzhakov was an explosive striker who played on the last line of opposing defences; Dzeko is a targetman who can also play with his feet; and Icardi is a foxy poacher inside the penalty area.

All different profiles, but all have flourished with Spalletti as coach.

On the basis of his record, if ever there was such a thing as a guarantee for taking strikers up a level or two, Spalletti is it. What’s more: it might very well be that this was a factor in De Laurentiis’ decision-making.

There is, however, an undercurrent of volatility.

His disagreements with Kerzhakov and Icardi stemmed from a perceived (in Spalletti’s view) lack of professionalism, and the Russian was at one point sent to train with the Zenit reserves.

He eventually fell out with Totti, grossly mishandling the Roma legend’s final playing season at the club, and there were frequent spats with Dzeko during the Bosnian’s record season.

The 62-year-old clearly can be a difficult personality sometimes.

He will perhaps lack the ability to connect on an emotional and personal level like Gattuso did – there will be fewer warm hugs for Osimhen on the touchline.

However, what the lanky striker will get is a manager who, according to Dzeko, “taught me new things.”

With his emphasis on technical play, his tactical flexibility and his ability to understand players’ strengths and play to them, Spalletti may be the manager that pulls the pin on Osimhen.

Can India qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup?

India started their World Cup qualification run with a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of Oman at home, followed by a historic goalless draw against Asian champions Qatar in Doha. In their third and fourth matches, the Blue Tigers managed 1-1 draws against both Bangladesh and Afghanistan and then they suffered a 1-0 defeat against Oman away from home.

They resume their campaign against Qatar on June 3, followed by Bangladesh and Afghanistan on June 7 and June 15 respectively.

Currently fourth in Group E with three points from five matches, India does not stand a chance of qualifying for the next round of the World Cup qualifiers but still have a lot to play for in the remaining three fixtures. If India can finish at least in the third position then they will qualify directly for the third round of the Asian Cup 2023 qualifiers.
