Mokwena does not believe in McCarthy's PSL Coach of the Season award

The former Orlando Pirates assistant coach stated delivering the championship trophy is the most important thing for him

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rhulani Mokwena feels individual awards should be scrapped after Benni McCarthy beat him to the PSL Coach of the Season accolade.

Mokwena and fellow Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi were nominated for the award after they led Masandawana to their fourth consecutive PSL title in the 2020/21 season.

However, the accolade was won by McCarthy, who guided AmaZulu FC to a second-place finish in the PSL for the first time in the club's history.

Mokwena seems to have not taken the judges’ decision to overlook his hard work to heart as he made it clear that they are not in the business of chasing individual accolades.

“I’ve always retained the stance that football should not have individual awards. It’s my opinion,” Mokwena said on Daily Sun

“No individual wins a game in football. You can put the coach on the touchline, but without the quality of the players, without the work ethics, the ability to express themselves and help the team win, you can’t win matches.

“We’re not in the business of chasing individual awards. Of course, as you move on with the journey, awards become part of the process. But if you focus too much on that you lose track of what is most important. You have to keep sight of what’s important.”

Mokwena is the youngest co-coach to win the PSL title at the age of 34 and he explained that their hard work paid off having been appointed along with Mngqithi following Pitso Mosimane's departure in September 2020.

“We’ve delivered the championship trophy, which is the most important award. It reflects the hard work, the commitment, and only that of the just the coaches, the technical team," he added.

"But that of the players, the management, the board and everyone that’s involved with Sundowns, including the supporters.

“Which one would you rather deliver, I’d rather deliver the championship trophy and if we get the coach of the month or the season, it is just part of the package.”

Mokwena and Mngqithi won the PSL Coach of the Month award for May and June this year.

Top 5 biggest candidates to win the Euro 2020

These nations are being considered as the front-runners to win the continental showpiece

Delayed a whole year due to Coronavirus, the 16th UEFA European Championship is set for the big kick-off in less than a week.

The tournament will kick off on Friday, June 11, in Rome, with what could be one of the best matches of the round: a Group A clash between Italy and Turkey.

After Friday, there are multiple games every day from the 12th to the 23rd, then a two-day pause before the Round-of-16 starts on June 26 with two games per day.

Today, Dream Island, a rewarding online game platform with its professional football analyzing team is here to analyze, predict and produce running commentary about the upcoming games.

So, which are the teams with champion-quality?

France, Portugal, England, Italy and Belgium are intimidating competitors that undoubtedly have been gathering talents in recent years.

France

As silver medal winners in the last Euro tournament and the winner of the FIFA World Cup in 2018, France’s players such as Pogba, Mbappe, Griezmann, Kante are at their best. If we add to that the surprising call up of Benzema, we will be undoubtably speaking about one of the strongest attacks in the world.

Portugal

Portugal will be France’s biggest rival during this tournament. The defending champions are bringing one of their most talented teams in years to Euro 2020, loaded with players who can support Ronaldo and make Portugal a contender again.

The talent pool is arguably greater than it was five years ago in France, when Portugal won the title with a squad that succeeded with efficiency rather than extraordinary play.

England

England have a strong squad heading to Euro 2020, with all players having a strong season in the Premier League. The Three Lions reached the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia against expectations. The young squad back then has matured and will look to challenge for the trophy.

Gareth Southgate is spoilt for choices when it comes to team selection. The tactician will have the likes of Marcus Rashford, Harry Kane, Jack Grealish, Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden to choose from. The expectations are high from the Three Lions on this occasion.

Italy
Italy should also be considered as a strong opponent. They have a nice blend of experience and youth in its ranks. This Serie A season saw several top talents come to the fore, who will now represent the country at the international level.

Belgium
Finally, Belgium Who finished third at the 2018 World Cup will be aiming to win its first European title. Martinez's side dominated the show in the qualification phase with 10 wins from 10 games. Romelu Lukaku is in a great form and helped Inter Milan win the Serie A, while Kevin De Bruyne will be looking to inspire his teammates to glory.

Joash Onyango: Simba SC offer new deal at defender to keep Orlando Pirates away

The PSL side has been linked with the Harambee Star who has had a great impact on the Msimbazi side since he arrived in 2020

Simba SC have decided to approach Kenya defender Joash Onyango to negotiate a contract extension in order to prevent him from joining Premier Soccer League side Orlando Pirates.

Onyango signed a two-year contract with Wekundu wa Msimbazi before the current season began and has been an outstanding figure for the Tanzanian champions since. His performances have attracted interest, especially from South Africa, and Simba have now reached out to the defender to negotiate a new deal that will potentially see him stay longer.

Simba's Chief Executive Officer Barbara Gonzalez has confirmed Onyango and his agent, have been welcomed to the table for a possible new bumper deal, but the player has yet to respond.

"We have already reached out to Onayngo and his agent that we would like to extend his contract which will begin once the initial two-year deal ends," Gonzalez said as quoted by Mwanaspoti. "The current contract was to end when the next season concludes, but the new one will see him stay with us until 2024.

"We have decided to make our wish to extend the contract given how Onyango has performed since he joined us. We need him because we understand how Simba would critically need his services. We also need him to sign so that if anyone comes on board to table his wish to sign Onyango, we will enter into negotiations knowing already he has a new deal for a further two years.

Goal understands the Simba board was initially divided on the length of the contract that Onyango ought to have been given when he signed in 2020. Some felt he should have been given a long-term contract, while others advocated for a short-term contract because Onyango's age was too advanced for a lengthy contract.

But since he started featuring for the Msimbazi giants, Onyango, when fit, has been lined up on a regular basis to partner Ivorian centre-back Pascal Wawa. His arrival and instant impact saw Tanzanian defender Erasto Nyoni relegated to the bench and sometimes lined up in midfield.

Simba are expected to enter into negotiations with more stars whose contracts are expected to end after the season. Beno Kakoalnya was the latest player to earn a new deal, while Francis Kahata left after two seasons.

Mourinho: Other bosses aren't punished like me

The incoming Roma manager guided Spurs to the Wembley showpiece but was sacked days before the match, which they lost to Manchester City

Jose Mourinho claims he has won "25 and a half trophies" in his managerial career - the half coming from guiding Tottenham to the Carabao Cup final last season, only to be sacked days before the match.

The Portuguese manager, who will take charge of Serie A side Roma next season, has officially won 25 leagues titles and cups across a glittering career with Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid and Manchester United.

He took Spurs to the League Cup final in 2020-21, but was dismissed six days before the game amid a poor run of form in the Premier League, and they went on to lose the Wembley showpiece 1-0 to Manchester City under interim boss Ryan Mason.

What has been said?

Speaking to The Sun, Mourinho said: “So if you want me to be proactive now you can ask me, ‘how many trophies have you won in your career?’ I’ll tell you 25 and a half. The half is the final that I didn’t play with Tottenham.

“You ask the guys who played lots of finals and everybody will tell you, ‘to play a final is a dream’ and it doesn’t matter if it is the first final or number 20 or number 50, a final is always a dream.

“A Wembley final is more than a dream, I played the first on the new Wembley and every time I go there, it’s more than a dream and to have a chance to win a trophy with a club that doesn’t have many of course was a double dream.

“I am the kind of guy that when I close the door of a club, I move and I just wish good to people, but in a funny way I would say I have 25 and a half titles because it’s something that marks my career which is not to play a final that I won the right to go there.”

Mourinho at Spurs

The 58-year-old manager was brought in to Tottenham to replace Mauricio Pochettino in the hope he could end the club's long trophy drought - only to depart empty-handed after only 17 months at the helm.

After making a strong start to his first full campaign in charge which appeared to put Spurs in Premier League title contention, results started to slip and Mourinho was relieved of his duties, with a shock Europa League defeat to Dinamo Zagreb also playing a part.

Eventually, under Mason, Spurs came seventh in the top-flight standings, qualifying for the inaugural UEFA Conference League next season.

The Flames have confirmed their assistant captain will not be able to travel for the friendly against Taifa Stars on Sunday

Malawi midfielder John Banda has been ruled out of the team’s friendly match against Tanzania on Sunday.

The Flames have confirmed the unavailability of the player with only four days remaining before they face Taifa Stars at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

In a statement on their social media pages, the Flames have revealed coach Meck Mwase has allowed the midfielder, who features for Mozambican giants UD Songo, to represent his team for an upcoming league assignment.

What has been said?

“Flames vice-captain John Banda has been ruled out of Sunday’s international friendly against Tanzania,” read part of the statement.

“Mozambique-based Banda will not come for the match after coach Meck Mwase granted the player's club request to keep him for their League assignment this weekend.”

Despite missing Banda, the team received a huge boost on Monday as more professionals arrived in camp led by South Africa-based midfielder Gerald Phiri.

Phiri became the sixth from the contingent of players plying their trade abroad, after Peter Banda, Charles Petro, Khuda Muyaba, Dennis Chembezi, and Kieran Ngwenya, to join camp while Cyprus-based midfielder Tawonga Chimodzi is expected in camp on Wednesday alongside Phiri's Baroka FC teammate Richard Mbulu, captain Limbikani Mzava, and striker Gabadinho Mhango.

The Flames are expected to leave for Dar es Salaam on Friday.

Samatta and Msuva not in camp

Meanwhile, Tanzania international Mbwana Samatta is among the players who are yet to report to camp as the team started preparations to face Malawi.

The team under coach Kim Poulsen moved to camp on Monday, but the two players - Mbwana Samatta (Fenerbahce -Turkey) and attacking midfielder Simon Msuva (Wydad Casablanca - Morocco) – did not show up with Tanzania Football Federation Media and Communications Officer Clifford Ndimbo confirming they will join soon.

"So far so good, morale in the camp is high and players are looking forward to the match though we still don’t have [Samatta] and [Msuva] in camp,” Ndimbo told Goal on Tuesday.

“It is a very important game, which will help to give head coach Kim Poulsen a good balance prior to the upcoming World Cup qualifying matches.”

Apart from Samatta and Msuva, Poulsen also named Novatus Dismas of Maccabi Tel Aviv, Israel in the squad alongside seven players from the Simba SC squad that reached the quarter-finals of the Caf Champions League.

‘Salah is undervalued and underappreciated’ – Carragher salutes Liverpool’s title-winning front three

The 23-year-old has just completed a loan spell at West Brom and does not know if he'll feature in Mikel Arteta's plans for the 2021-22 season

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has insisted he's ready to "kiss Arsenal goodbye" if he is not given assurances over regular playing time.

Maitland-Niles rose through the youth ranks at Emirates Stadium before graduating to the senior squad in 2014, and has since appeared in 121 games for the Gunners.

However, the decision was taken to send the 23-year-old out on loan to West Brom in the second half of the 2020-21 campaign after he fell out of favour under Mikel Arteta, and he is now open to leaving the club on a permanent basis.

What's been said?

Maitland-Niles told The Telegraph of his situation: “If I was to get a phone call from someone at Arsenal and they said they'd like a meeting tomorrow, then it would be easier that way.

“They can tell me whether they've got plans to play me in the future or if they want to sell me. I've heard they want to make some space [in the squad] and some money so I'm not sure.

“I want a decision. I want some clarity. And then hopefully I can get to work with whoever I need to get to work with.

“Whether that is finding a new club or whether that is carrying on with my training. I would like some kind of indication of what is happening. Where they (Arsenal) see me.

“If it works out it works out, if it doesn’t then kiss Arsenal goodbye. It’s been a long journey but a proud one at that.

“Maybe they still want to do something and things could change. If not, there’s always other teams."

How did Maitland-Niles perform for West Brom?

Maitland-Niles played 15 Premier League games for West Brom under Sam Allardyce, four more than he managed at Arsenal in the first half of the season.

He has been deployed primarily as a right-back with the Gunners in recent years, but played in a more natural central midfield role for the Baggies and stood out with his performances despite their relegation to the Championship.

The bigger picture

Maitland-Niles still has two years left to run on his contract at the Emirates, but it has been reported that Arsenal could let him go if they receive an offer within the region of £20 million ($28m) this summer.

Manchester United have been among those linked with the versatile Englishman in recent times, while a potential move abroad has also been mooted.

There could also still be an opportunity for Maitland-Niles to win back his place in Arteta's set-up, with Real Betis having held talks over the signing of Hector Bellerin.

The 47-year-old tactician believes the glory days will soon be back at the Naturena-based giants

Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Arthur Zwane says he wants to win the Caf Champions League title for the country.

Zwane and fellow interim Chiefs coach Dillon Sheppard recently guided the Soweto giants to two successive wins which saw the team secure a top-eight finish in the PSL.

Nicknamed 10111 during his playing days, Zwane has set his sights on winning the Champions League title with Amakhosi set to face Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca in the two-legged semi-finals later this month.

“We know that we had a very difficult season, a disappointing season according to our standards as a team,” Zwane said on iDiski Times

“But there’s also something that is very good in terms of the Caf Champions League. Through thick and thin the fans have been there for us and we appreciate that as a team.

“Hopefully next season things will change for the better and hopefully we can put a smile on our supporters’ faces by maybe taking the team to the final of the Champions League and win it for the country because anything is possible from now on."

Chiefs endured one of their worst seasons in the PSL under coach Gavin Hunt, who was dismissed by the club late last month and Zwane and Sheppard took charge of the team on an interim basis.

“I just feel sorry for the people who have been there for us for many, many years. I fought as a player, they were there when Chiefs were down and never gave up on us," Zwane continued.

"And they are still here as supporters. We always try our best to put a smile on their faces."

Zwane, who lifted two PSL titles with Amakhosi during his playing days, believes the Glamour Boys will win silverware next season.

“We want to win cups, we want to win the league, we want to dominate. Things are getting better slowly, very soon things will be back to normal for us," he concluded.

Chiefs have been heavily linked with their former coach Stuart Baxter, who is currently unattached since he parted ways with Indian club Odisha FC in February 2021.

Amakhosi will be away to Wydad in the first-leg clash on June 19, before they host the North African giants in the return leg clash on June 26.

The winner on aggregate will then take on either Egyptian champions Al Ahly or Tunisian giants Esperance de Tunis in the final.

The Selecao have hit out at South America's main football governing body over their handling of the summer tournament that will be hosted in Brazil

The Brazil squad have criticised CONMEBOL for switching the Copa America location, but have reluctantly accepted the hosting responsibilities that have been thrust upon them.

Argentina and Colombia were originally due to co-host the 2021 Copa America, but the latter was removed on May 20 amid widespread political protests.

CONMEBOL subsequently announced that Argentina would stage the tournament alone before they were hit with a surge of Covid-19 cases, and Brazil were then swiftly named the new hosts.

What's been said?

Selecao captain Casemiro suggested that the whole squad and their manager Tite were against the decision following their 2-0 World Cup qualifying win against Ecuador last week.

The Brazilian team has now released an official statement confirming as much, but they have also pledged to play on in the face of adversity.

“When a Brazilian is born, a fan is born," the statement reads. "And for more than 200 million fans we write this letter to express our opinion about the Copa America outcome.

"We are a cohesive group, but with different ideas. For many reasons, humanitarian or professional, we are not satisfied with the conduct shown by CONMEBOL relating to Copa America.

"All recent facts lead us to believe there has been an inadequate process.

"It is important to emphasise that at no time did we want to make this a political discussion. We are aware of the importance of our position - we follow what is published by the media, we are present on social media. We also try to avoid false news bearing our names being circulated without the true facts.

"Finally, we remember that we are workers, soccer professionals. We have a mission to achieve wearing the historic yellow and green jersey of the five-time world champions.

"We are against the organisation of Copa America, but we will never say no to the Brazilian national team."

Why are Brazil upset by the decision?

Argentina and Colombia both had valid reasons to withdraw as hosts, but Brazil are also facing a precarious situation in the country at the moment.

Brazil have had rising cases and deaths related to Covid-19 over the past week, while mass demonstrations are also taking place to oppose the presidency of Jair Bolsonaro.

A number of the nation's largest states have insisted they won't be holding any matches amid the continued safety risk to the public, and it had originally been suggested that the Selecao team would refuse to take to the pitch.

When does the Copa America start?

Brazil's confirmation that they will be going ahead with the tournament came in the wake of their latest World Cup qualifying victory over Paraguay, with Neymar and Lucas Paqueta grabbing the goals in a 2-0 win.

The Copa America will now kick off on June 13 as planned if there are no more disruptions, with the Selecao set to open the action with a clash against Venezuela.

The Portuguese tactician admits having respect for the Sharks but insists their target is to reach the final of the domestic cup

Gor Mahia coach Carlos Manuel Vaz Pinto has promised a cautious approach to their FKF Shield Cup quarter-final clash against Kariobangi Sharks on Thursday.

K’Ogalo will face their fellow Premier League side at Utalii grounds seeking to advance to the semi-finals and keep alive their hopes of winning the double in this campaign.

The Kenyan champions are also in the hunt to retain the top-flight title as they have managed to win four straight matches since the action resumed, but they will face a Sharks side, who beat them at the same stage of the same competition in 2018.

During the fixture played at Machakos Stadium, both teams finished regular time tied at 0-0 but Sharks under coach William Muluya managed to win 4-2 on penalties to send K’Ogalo out of the competition and reach the last four.

The Portuguese tactician, who is chasing his first title since arriving at the side to replace Brazilian Roberto Oliveira, has told Goal he has a lot of respect for Sharks but their mission in the competition is to go all the way and win the trophy.

What has been said?

“Of course if we are in the competition we play to win, we are not in the competition to lose, it is the reason we are participating in this competition, we are in this cup to win and nothing else,” Vaz Pinto told Goal on Wednesday.

“We will look at the match against Kariobangi [Sharks] with respect and take a cautious approach, Sharks is a good team with a good coach and they also have good players but Gor Mahia is also the same, we have good players and a good team, I expect a good game.

“My main target is to win this game and reach the semi-finals, but we look to this game with a lot of confidence but also with a lot of respect to our opponents.”

Other quarter-final fixtures

In the other quarter-final fixtures set for Wednesday, four-time winners Tusker will come up against eight-time winners AFC Leopards at Ruaraka grounds while defending champions Bandari will take on Division One side Equity Bank.

On Thursday, Nairobi City Stars, who beat Ulinzi Stars 2-0 to reach the last eight, will face Bidco United in an all-Premier League clash.

Where will Euro 2020 take place?

Can India qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup?

India started their journey in the qualifiers with a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of Oman at home followed by a historic goalless draw against Asian champions Qatar in Doha. In their third and fourth matches, the Blue Tigers managed 1-1 draws against Bangladesh and Afghanistan respectively but again suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Oman away from home in their fifth match.

Following a 1-0 defeat to Qatar at the Jassim Bim Hamad Stadium in Doha, India defeated Bangladesh 2-0 and are now set to face Afghanistan on Tuesday, at the same venue.

Currently third in Group E with six points after seven games, India does not stand a chance of qualifying for the next round of the World Cup qualifiers but still have a lot to play for. If India can finish at least in the third position then they will qualify directly for the third round of the Asian Cup 2023 qualifiers.

BRAZIL (4-2-2-2): Ederson; Danilo, Eder Militao, Marquinhos, Alex Sandro; Casemiro, Fred; Gabriel Jesus, Richarlison; Roberto Firmino, Neymar.

Subs: Fabian Balbuena, Robert Piris Da Motta, Alejandro Romero Gamarra, Gabriel Avalos, Alfredo Aguilar, Alberto Espinola, Andres Cubas, David Martinez, Braian Samudio, Antonio Bareiro, Oscar Romero, Gerardo Ortiz.

PARAGUAY (5-3-2): Antony Silva; Robert Rojas, Gustavo Gomez, Junior Alonso, Omar Alderete, Santiago Arzamendia; Mathias Villasanti, Gaston Gimenez, Angel Cardozo; Miguel Almiron, Angel Romero.

It's three changes for the visitors, with Ederson handed the gloves and Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmono both drafted into the starting XI. The hosts make a pair of swaps: Junior Alonso and Santiago Arzamendia get the nod to begin from the off.

Paraguay - quarter-finalists at South Africa 2010 a decade ago, of course - are looking to book their first return since this time around, having missed out on Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018. A surprise victory here could vault them into the top four and keep them firmly on the front foot.

The rescheduled tournament, shifted from Argentina and Colombia to the Selecao's own backyard, has attracted widespread criticism from its players, with talks of a boycott. But all their focus today will surely be on ensuring they head back with another three points.

Having swatted aside Ecuador on home soil last week, Tite's side make the trip across the continent now with a view to further strengthening their spot at the head of the race for next year's tournament - and possibly to fine-tune ahead of a controversial Copa America.

Spain worry over Covid-19 after Llorente joins Busquets in testing positive ahead of Euro 2020

Luis Rubiales, president of the Spanish FA, has admitted that there could be more coronavirus cases to come

Diego Llorente has become the second Spain player to test positive for Covid-19 in recent days as kickoff of Euro 2020 fast approaches.

The Spanish federation confirmed the Leeds defender's test results in a statement on Tuesday, two days after Busquets tested positive.

The two results have raised the specter of further positives ahead of Spain's first Euros match against Sweden on Monday.

What was said?

Luis Rubiales, president of the Spanish FA (RFEF), said on Teledeporte prior to Llorente's result that "there are likely to be more positives" within the Spain camp.

After the comments from Rubiales, the RFEF confirmed Llorente's result, saying: "The RFEF regrets to announce that central defender Diego Llorente has tested positive in the most recent PCR tests carried out this morning at the national team setup in Las Rozas.

"The player will leave the national team tonight in a medical vehicle, following all the established health protocols."

'A parallel bubble'

Spain's players have been kept in isolation since Busquets returned a positive test result, with five players called up to train in a "parallel bubble" in which they won't mix with the rest of the squad.

Rodrigo Moreno, Pablo Fornals, Carlos Soler, Brais Mendez and Raul Albiol were all called up to help bolster Spain's depth.

With Spain's senior players in isolation, a team of Under-21 players was called in to face Lithuania in a friendly on Tuesday. Even with a team full of youngsters, Spain won the match 4-0.

Spain will face Sweden on Monday, with the Swedes also having confirmed two positive Covid-19 cases in recent days: Dejan Kulusevski and Mattias Svanberg.

Friendly Wrap: Senegal, Gambia and Morocco record wins

The Lions of Teranga, Scorpions and Atlas Lions emerged victorious during Tuesday’s international friendlies

Senegal defeated Cape Verde 2-0 in Tuesday’s international friendly played Stade Lat Dior.

Goals from Idrissa Gueye and Sadio Mane were all the Lions of Teranga needed to defeat coach Bubista’s Blue Sharks.

Aliou Cisse's men came into this game having silenced Zambia 3-1 their last time out on Saturday.

As expected, the game got lived to its pedigree, but no goals were scored in the first half as chances were few.

In the 55th minute, Gueye opened scoring for the West Africans. That goal was a reality check for the Cape Verdean, albeit, they were unable to equalise as their attacking forays met strong resistance from the Senegalese defenders.

Four minutes to full time, Mane doubled the advantage from the penalty mark after Ismaila Sarr was fouled in the box.

The Liverpool star fired the ensuing kick past goalkeeper Sixten Mohlin.

With this result, Senegal are now unbeaten in their last six games in all competitions.

Elsewhere, Morocco edged Ghana 1-0 inside Rabat’s Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah. Jawad El Yamiq’s 69th minute effort separated both teams as Charles Akonnor’s men lost their first game in three matches.

The Black Stars would be hoping to return to winning ways when they try Cote d’Ivoire for size on Friday at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

At the Emirhan Sport Center Stadium, Togo bowed 1-0 to the Gambian senior national team.

19-year-old Horsens defender, James Gomez scored the Scorpions’ winner in the 74th minute, while the Hawks would be left to rue missing several scoring opportunities.

Tom Saintfiet’s Gambia would be hoping to make it three wins at a bounce when they take on the national team of Kosovo on Friday.

Benin Republic and Zambia settled for a 2-2 draw in their international friendly.

Having bowed 3-1 to Senegal their last time out, the Chipolopolo travelled to Cotonou to return to winning ways against the Squirrels.

Nonetheless, the encounter played at the Stade de l'Amitie ended on a no winner, no vanquished note.

Arminia Bielefeld midfielder Cebio Soukou put the hosts ahead in the 12th minute, but the visitors levelled matters through Salulani Phiri seven minutes later.

Zambia took the lead for the first time through Mwape Tandi on the stroke of half-time.

Ten minutes to full time, super-sub Yohan Roche rescued Michel Dussuyer’s men from losing on home soil.

Red Bull Salzburg striker Patson Daka was not listed for the encounter by coach Milutin Sredojevic.

Man Utd guarantee top-4 spot with Chelsea rout

The Valencia midfielder was the only available field player not to feature in the wins over Mexico and Honduras

Gregg Berhalter explained the decision to leave Yunus Musah out of the U.S. men's national team's two CONCACAF Nations League wins while also offering an update on the injury suffered by goalkeeper Zack Steffen.

Musah was the only available USMNT outfield player not to appear in the team's wins over Honduras and Mexico, two games that would have officially cap-tied the midfielder to the U.S.

Now, he'll almost certainly have to wait until the fall to be cap-tied, but Berhalter said that the Valencia starlet is taking it in stride and is expected to feature against Costa Rica on Wednesday.

What did Berhalter have to say?

"It was a tactical decision," USWNT boss Berhalter said of Musah's omission. "He's a big part of what we do. He's a young player, 18 years old, and in these particular games, we opted for something different. I don't think it means that he's not part of the group. He's a guy that we're counting on and we're counting on for the future.

"We wanted to bring him into these games in the right way, for him to see the speed of the game, for him to get used to what CONCACAF is like and to see that from the sideline, but he's ready to go for tomorrow and we're looking forward to him having a big game tomorrow."

"He's ready to go," Berhalter added. "He understands it's a team. He's dealt with enough with Valencia this year to understand that sometimes you don't get to play, but it's been a lot of communication from us and he's ready to go. It's never easy for younger players not to get on the field but he's patient and he's bought into the team concept and he's ready to go tomorrow."

Steffen out for Costa Rica friendly

Ahead of Thursday's friendly, the last game for most of this group before World Cup qualifying this fall, the U.S. will be without their starting goalkeeper in Steffen, who picked up an injury against Mexico.

The Manchester City goalkeeper was forced out in the second half, with Ethan Horvath emerging as the USMNT's hero with a late save of Andres Guardado's penalty kick.

On Tuesday, Berhalter revealed that Steffen, and defender Bryan Reynolds, would miss the game against Costa Rica with identical injuries.

"They both have bone bruises on their knee, and it's about a 10-day injury," Berhalter said. "They're recovering and getting better but won't be able to play the game."

Berhalter also revealed that defender Matt Miazga has left camp to celebrate his wedding and has been replaced by Nashville SC defender Walker Zimmerman.

LIVE: Colombia vs Argentina

46' Colombia get us back underway for the second half!

Argentina made a brilliant start, but they started to sit back as the half went on and Scaloni will want to see them try and put this game to bed. Colombia grew into the game after their poor start, but they haven't created too many chances. Cuadrado has looked dangerous throughout though and they'll want to try and get him on the ball more.

Two quickfire goals mean that Argentina take a 2-0 lead into half-time. Romero headed De Paul's free-kick over Ospina just three minutes in before Paredes doubled their lead five minutes later with a great run through a crowded box before slotting it into the bottom corner. Lautaro Martinez and Messi have both seen efforts saved, while Muriel saw an effort blocked by Otamendi at the other end.

45' + 10' HALF-TIME: COLOMBIA 0-2 ARGENTINA.

45' + 7' CHANCE! Cuadrado is still causing Argentina a lot of problems as he pulls away down the right again before squaring it to Muriel on the edge of the box. He tees up Zapata, but he slices at his shot and it swerves up and over the crossbar.

45' + 5' BLOCK! Cuadrado breaks quickly on the counter and he tries to wrongfoot Romero on the edge of the box with a couple of stepovers. That doesn't work so he pulls it back for Muriel, but his drilled effort is deflected wide by Otamendi.

45' + 2' Into a second of eight added minutes here and Argentina are still pushing for their third goal. Paredes plays a great throughball into the box for Gonzalez down the right, but his first touch is heavy and he gifts it to Ospina.

45' At the other end, Marchesin is tested for the first time as Colombia break quickly on the counter and it's switched out to Diaz on the left. He pulls it back for Muriel on the edge of the box, but it's a comfortable save for the goalkeeper.

43' SAVE! Messi steps up to take the free-kick on the edge of the D and he curls his effort up and over the wall towards the far post. Ospina watches it all the way and he pushes it away from the goal.

42' Argentina are on the attack again here and Messi lifts a wonderful ball over the top to Martinez. He brings it down with a good first touch before being tripped by Sanchez on the edge of the D.

38' Emiliano Martinez is still down here and the medical team aren't taking any risks with him here. The referee signals for the stretcher to be brought on and the goalkeeper isn't going to be carrying on.

36' Emiliano Martinez hit his head on the ground when he fell after the collision with Mina and he's stayed down. He's getting treatment on it now, but the goalkeeper doesn't look happy with whatever he's being told by the medical staff.

32' Already, it's better from Colombia and they're moving the ball upfield quicker than before. Tesillo switches play out to Uribe on the right, but Romero's touch stops it from reaching him at the expense of a corner.

29' Argentina are patiently trying to work the ball upfield and the home fans are making it clear that they aren't happy with the lack of pressing from their side. Colombia sit back until Mina blocks Messi's run into the box.

27' GOOD SAVE! Lo Celso's throughball is perfectly weighted for Lautaro Martinez down the right of the box and he lets it roll across him before taking a shot. Ospina parries it away, but only as far as Acuna on the other side, but he drills his low effort into the side netting.

25' Argentina have scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of a qualifier for the first time since 2011, thanks to Romero's and Paredes' goals.

23' Cuadrado is in quickly to nick it off Lo Celso and he drives forward down the right again. He drills a dangerous low cross into the middle looking for Zapata, but Romero is there to intercept it.

21' Colombia's pressure is winning them a lot of corners, but they haven't taken advantage of them as Emiliano Martinez collects another one. He sets Acuna off on a counter down the left, but there's no one at the other end to get on the end of his chipped cross.

19' It's better from Colombia now as they're keeping hold of the ball, but they're not really doing anything with it. Nobody is making any runs in behind, so the defenders are left to just knock it around between them for now.

17' Another corner for Colombia and Cuadrado swings another cross into the middle of the box. Mina is right on top of the goalkeeper, but Emiliano Martinez stands his ground and holds onto it under pressure.

15' Argentina are still dominating the ball here after Mina's clearance is played straight into Lo Celso. The visitors are knocking it around in midfield and Colombia just can't get a touch on it at the moment.

13' SAVE! Cuadrado swings a deep corner into the box and he picks out Tesillo's leap above Otamendi at the far post. He flicks his header on goal, but it's a comfortable save for Emiliano Martinez.

12' Lautaro Martinez has acres of space through the middle, enough time to turn, compose himself and start the attack for Argentina. Messi makes a run ahead of him but he overhits the pass and it loops up into Ospina's gloves.

10' Most of the Colombia players look slightly rattled after Argentina's quick start to the game, but Cuadrado is trying to get them back into this. He drives forward down the right before trying to fizz the ball into the box, but it's blocked by Acuna.

7' CLOSE! Messi switches play into Acuna on the left of the box and he's unmarked, so decides to have a shot. He tries to curl it into the near post, but a big deflection off Mina takes it swerving just wide of the far top corner.

5' Cuadrado's cross hits Otamendi at the near post and he instantly tries to set Gonzalez on the counter. He manages to hold off three defenders before touching it into Lo Celso, but he can't pick out Paredes.

2' Argentina have made a bright start to the game and are putting Colombia under some early pressure here. Gonzalez makes a driving run down the right and is tripped by Tesillo and they have a free-kick in a good position.

1' Lautaro Martinez gets the game underway for Argentina!

The teams are coming out onto the pitch now, with kick-off just moments away.

Colombia have won just one of their last five games against Argentina in all competitions (D2 L2), though that was in their last meeting when they wno 2-0 in the Copa America in June 2019.

Lionel Scaloni makes five changes to his team after their draw with Chile. Montiel, Otamendi, Acuna, Gonzalez and Lo Celso are all brought in. Foyth, Tagliafico and Di Maria drop to the bench, where Aguero is also named after joining up with the squad.

Reinado Rueda makes just one change to the side that beat Peru last time out, with Lerma coming in for Muriel, who drops to the bench. Daniel Munoz misses out through suspension after being sent off in that game.

ARGENTINA SUBS: Agustin Marchesin, Juan Musso, Juan Foyth, Nicolas Tagliafico, German Pezzella, Nicolas Dominguez, Lisandro Martinez, Ezequiel Palacios, Angel Correa, Joaquin Correa, Angel Di Maria, Sergio Aguero.

ARGENTINA STARTING XI (4-3-3): Emiliano Martinez; Gonzalo Montiel, Cristian Romero, Nicolas Otamendi, Marcos Acuna; Rodrigo De Paul, Leandro Paredes, Giovani Lo Celso; Lionel Messi, Lautaro Martinez, Nicolas Gonzalez.
