'I will fight him to the end' - Sparta's Coremans warns Nigeria keeper Okoye

The 30-year-old is fit again and has promised to push the Super Eagles star for the starting role after returning to first team training

Sparta Rotterdam goalkeeper Tim Coremans has vowed to reclaim his position as the number one for the Eredivisie side from Nigerian Maduka Okoye.

When Sparta were promoted to the Eredivisie more than two years ago, Coremans was one of the stars but everything changed after he picked up a serious injury and his place was taken by the Super Eagles custodian, who played most matches last season.

Despite the fact that he suffered a serious knee injury a year ago, his contract at Het Kasteel was extended until mid-2022.

Coremans has recovered and was in action for Sparta last Friday. The keeper has now warned the Nigerian star that he will do everything at his disposal to beat him to the number one role at the club.

"That is always the goal and it will be again this year. I'll see where we end up, I'm going to do everything I can to get there," Coremans said as quoted by Soccernet.

Coremans also knows that Okoye had a good year and has congratulated him for the superb season.

"It is understandable that he has built up some credit last year. He has done well. But we will all see. If he does not make a transfer, I will fight him, if he makes a transfer, I will also up the fight."

On his feeling after returning to action, Coremans said: "It is a pleasure to be back on the training field," says the now 30-year-old goalkeeper. "In the beginning you are careful, but at some point, you get through it and you just do your normal thing. Just grab balls. Then it will slowly get out of your head."

Due to his injury, the 30-year-old goalkeeper had to watch from the sidelines last year as Sparta had a great season, eventually even making the playoffs for European football.

"I also enjoyed the boys from a distance, but I would have loved to have been there. You will understand that."

Okoye joined Sparta Rotterdam from Fortuna Dusseldorf II on a free transfer last season and arrived as the club’s reserve goalie, with Benjamin van Leer the preferred option between the sticks.

He also featured for Nigeria during the recent friendly matches against Cameroon.

'He knows we're here' - Solskjaer refuses to rule out Manchester United move for Ronaldo

The former Foxes frontman would like to see the Brazilian playmaker at the King Power Stadium and has hailed the work of Brendan Rodgers

Emile Heskey would like to see Philippe Coutinho reunited with former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers at Leicester, but admits there are question marks over the Brazilian and his ability to perform at the highest level.

A dream move to Barcelona was made by the 29-year-old midfielder in January 2018, but a spell at Camp Nou quickly became a nightmare and another move could soon be on the cards.

It has been suggested that Coutinho, who spent six productive years at Anfield, will look to retrace his steps to England, with ambitious Leicester mooted as a potential landing spot.

What has been said?

Quizzed by Goal on whether a South American star could make his way to the King Power Stadium, ex-Foxes frontman Heskey said: "That would be great. He is fantastic player. He is 29 now and still has a lot to give.

"The thing is, we don't know where he is at this moment in time when it comes to his legs. He's had a torrid time since leaving Liverpool, really. He has had a tough time. Can he still do it?

"Especially in the Premier League, because it is very fearsome and very feisty and quick. We have seen players come in and they struggle, especially for the first year where you have to give them a bit of leeway. Do they have time for that at 28/29?"

Will Leicester sign new players?

Whether Coutinho arrives or not remains to be seen, but the expectation is that Leicester will look to add this summer.

Heskey is not convinced that they need much despite questions being asked of squad depth after back-to-back seasons in which top-four bids have fizzled out.

He added: "Squad depth, you have to remember that James Justin is coming back and Harvey Barnes is coming back - two key players for the way that Leicester play and very young. Harvey is 23 and Justin is 23. They are key young players.

"I think Leicester will focus on getting players out first and foremost before they get players in. They do have a big squad, but it is a big squad of players that probably aren't going to play.

"They will refocus that on getting playing and focusing on players that mean they can rotate now, rather than just back-up."

The bigger picture

Rodgers has turned Leicester into FA Cup winners and contenders for a place in the Champions League, with the Northern Irishman seeing his stock rise considerably in the East Midlands.

Inevitable interest in his services has been shown from afar, but it is a mark of how far the Foxes have come under his guidance that recent links to Tottenham were laughed off.

Heskey said of the impressive progress made under the former Liverpool and Celtic coach: "It's an indication of the project as well. People see Leicester and see a project, they see that focus on where it's going, what they want to do and how they do it. They do it in the right way.

"They have got new training facilities. So have Spurs, they have got a fantastic stadium - probably one of the best - but Leicester do everything in the right way that has allowed the manager to express himself in the way they want.

"Brendan has bought into that, the club love what he has done and he has brought some fantastic players in. The next step is obviously trying to crack that top four and maintain a stay in there."

Heskey is working with Weetabix, the official breakfast cereal of the England National team and proud partner of Weetabix Wildcats, an FA football programme for 5-11-year-old girls. Has Keita done enough since title win to gain Klopp's trust?

A Newcastle legend that remains the English top-flight's all-time leading marksman expects to be overtaken at some stage

Alan Shearer admits that Harry Kane will "obliterate" his Premier League goals record if a move to Manchester City is made, with the Blues set to open the bidding for a prolific Tottenham striker.

The England captain, who is facing questions of his value at international level during Euro 2020, is expected to be on the move this summer as he looks to chase down the major silverware which has so far eluded him.

City, who have bid farewell to Barcelona-bound Sergio Aguero, are in the market for another No.9 and are thought to be ready to put a £100 million ($139m) offer on the table for one of the Premier League's most devastating forwards.

What has been said?

Newcastle legend Shearer, who continues to top the all-time goalscoring charts in the English top-flight, has told UMM of Kane chasing him down: "Sweating?! No. Do I think he will do it? He probably will do.

"I've had it for 20-odd years so it will go one day, and if it goes then why not go to him, he's a nice guy.

"He'll absolutely obliterate it if he goes to City, in three or four years."

How many goals does Kane have?

Shearer plundered 260 Premier League goals across spells at Blackburn and Newcastle, with that haul achieved through 14 seasons.

Kane has only spent eight years as a regular in the top tier, having had to be patient in pursuit of a big break, but the 27-year-old is now one of the best around.

He has 166 Premier League goals to his name, from 242 appearances, and currently sits seventh on the all-time chart.

Spurs have him tied to a contract through to 2024, but big-money bids this summer could see that agreement broken and a new challenge taken on.

The bigger picture

For now, Kane's focus is locked on international competition, with England back in action on Tuesday when facing the Czech Republic in their final group game at Euro 2020.

Their skipper is yet to have a shot on target in that competition, with two quiet showings put in so far.

He does, however, retain the full support of manager Gareth Southgate and - amid talk of Manchester United and Chelsea also being keen - will continue to generate transfer talk for as long as Tottenham refuse to sanction a sale.

Barcelona set to extend Sergi Roberto's contract until 2024

The ex-K'Ogalo official feels the towering Harambee Star made the right move by snubbing France and Scotland for Belgium

Former Gor Mahia official Sally Bolo has backed Kenya defender Joseph Okumu to leave a mark in Belgium after signing for KAA Gent.

Goal exclusively reported three days ago the towering Harambee Star was closing in on a move to the Belgium-outfit after he was allowed by his Swedish club, IF Elfsborg, to travel to Gent and complete talks.

On Monday, Gent confirmed the arrival of the centre-back on a four-year contract that will see him stay at the club until 2025.

Bolo now feels despite having other offers from Lorient and Reims of France, and from Rangers FC and Celtic of Scotland,  the 26-year-old had made the right decision to move to Belgium.

"Looking back through history, Europe more specifically, Belgium has always served as a point of entry for players from Africa," Bolo told Goal on Tuesday.

"Victor [Wanyama] and Macdonald [Mariga] are two good examples of players that came from somewhere to end up in big teams in Europe and Okumu is on the right track.

"You can go straight to the big teams, but they will bench you the most of the time, interfering with your form. In addition, lack of playing time causes players to lack match fitness, which is bad for them and results in them not getting national team call-ups.

"Big teams may sign you, but you may end up being loaned to other teams because you are not in the starting line-up. Players cherish playing time, and if you can find a club where you can play the majority of the games, I believe it is in your best interests to join with them.

"As a result, I assume the boy must have considered these factors before deciding to join Gent and I wish him the best of luck."

'Crouch', as the former Real Monarchs star is known, joined the Swedish side after participating in the Africa Cup of Nations with Harambee Stars in 2019.

Although Kenya did not do well in the tournament, the centre-back showed his brilliance especially after being called up to fill the void that injuries created in the national team.

Since then, he has been an undroppable figure for the Harambee Stars, as he has also established himself as one of the key players at club level.

After completing his secondary education at Kakamega High, where he featured in national tournaments alongside his Harambee Stars teammate, Eric Ouma, Okumu joined Chemelil Sugar before he secured a move to Free State Stars of South Africa.

From there, the towering defender joined AFC Ann Arbor and Real Monarchs in the United States before Elfsborg - his first European team - signed him two years ago.

Okumu becomes the third Kenyan to play for the side after Robert Mambo and John Muiruri - Harambee Stars' outstanding midfielders at the beginning of the current century.

IF Elfsborg to Harambee Star Okumu: Thank you for all the tackles

The towering defender has been a consistent player for the Yellow Ones in the three years he has been with them

IF Elfsborg have thanked Kenya international Joseph Okumu for the 'big performances' he made during his time at the club.

The towering Harambee Star has been at the Swedish club from 2019-2021, putting in consistent performances at the heart of the defence. Recently, KAA Gent came in for his services, and the Harambee Star decided to join them and head for Belgium.

The Yellow Ones have now taken to their social media accounts to thank the East African for his services in the team.

"For all the big performances, tackles, decisive interceptions and for always keeping a smile on your face. Thank you Joe, and best of luck in Belgium," IF Elfsborg posted.

Gent handed the centre-back a four year contract that will see him stay at the club until 2025.

The former Chemelil Sugar player has had an impressive season with Elfsborg and attracted reported interest, mainly from Lorient and Reims of France, and from Rangers FC and Celtic of Scotland.

'It's very difficult not to count on Messi' - Scaloni admits to Argentina's reliance on 'tired' Barcelona superstar

The six-time Ballon d'Or winner has played every minute of his country's Copa America campaign so far, with his manager reluctant to rest him

Lionel Scaloni has admitted to Argentina's reliance on "tired" captain Lionel Messi, insisting it's "very difficult not to count on" the Barcelona superstar.

Argentina booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Copa America after beating Paraguay 1-0 on Monday, giving them three wins from three in Group A.

Papu Gomez scored the winner but Messi was once again the main man as he racked up 74 touches and won 75 per cent of his 16 duels, more than any other player in the team.

What's been said?

Messi hasn't missed a single minute of the tournament yet, with Scaloni conceding that he couldn't bring himself to grant the 33-year-old a rest as he equalled Javier Mascherano's all-time appearance record for Argentina by earning his 147th cap.

"The reality is that Messi has been playing every game and it is very difficult not to count on him. Even though he is tired, he continues to make the difference," Scaloni told reporters after the game.

"Today we made several changes and, despite that, we were able to take all three points."

Messi's international record

Messi currently stands as the top goalscorer in Argentina's history on 73, with his latest strike coming in the form of a stunning free kick in their Copa America opener against Chile last week.

That effort also saw him overtake Gabriel Batistuta as his country's leading marksman in competitive matches with 39 goals, and he could have the chance to add to his tally when Scaloni's team take on Bolivia in their final Group A fixture on June 29.

Scaloni on rotation

Scaloni made six changes to his starting XI from their win over Uruguay on matchday two, with the likes of Angel Di Maria and Sergio Aguero drafted in, but he is still concerned about the squad suffering from burnout due to the quick turnaround between matches.

"What worries me is the physical condition of the players because we came from playing three days ago and today the conditions were not the best, so we had to rotate players," said the 43-year-old.

"The first half we played very well and in the second, due to the merit of Paraguay and their good physical condition, as a result of many days off, they had more control of the game. The team showed a good image in the first half, but there are always things to keep improving."

Crew fire coach Porter after missing playoffs

The Wolves winger is a product of the famed La Masia academy system and is leaving the door open for a homecoming in Catalunya

Adama Traore is intrigued by talk of a return to Barcelona being put in place, with the Wolves winger prepared to discuss a possible transfer with his representatives.

Speculation regarding a switch to Camp Nou has raged around the jet-heeled forward for some time, with a product of the famed La Masia academy system seeing his stock rise in England.

A starting spot is no longer guaranteed for the 25-year-old at Molineux and, having forced his way into the Spain squad, a homecoming could still be on the cards for a Catalan native.

What has been said?

Quizzed by RAC1 on the rumours of a switch to Barca being made, Traore has said: "Barcelona is my home. I grew up there, and was there for 10 years.

"I have to discuss things with my agents, and see what role Barca needs for a return."

Traore's career to date

Traore made just four competitive appearances for Barca before deciding to try his luck elsewhere.

Aston Villa took him to England in the summer of 2015, but he suffered relegation in his first season with the club and sanctioned a switch to Middlesbrough a year later.

Another tumble out of the Premier League was endured with Boro, but Wolves offered raw talent a route back to the big time in 2018.

Traore has taken in 131 appearances while in the West Midlands, recording 10 goals along the way.

Senior international recognition has been earned, with the plan being to add to a five-cap haul at Euro 2020, and interest from afar continues to build.

Could Traore leave Wolves?

Goal learned in May that Traore was in talks over a new contract at Wolves.

No paperwork has been signed, though, and his current deal is due to expire in the summer of 2023.

Wolves are under no pressure to sell, but there has been change on and off the field at Molineux and that could see future plans tweaked.

Bruno Lage is now in charge of the Premier League outfit, having inherited the managerial reins from Nuno Espirito Santo, and it remains to be seen where Traore figures in his thoughts.

The Barca talk appears set to hang around, but the Liga giants are well-stocked for attacking talent at present - with Memphis Depay and Sergio Aguero added to those ranks this summer - and it may be that Traore has to delay plans regarding a return to his roots.

Has Katsande played himself into contention for extended Kaizer Chiefs stay?

The Zimbabwean midfielder has been back in the team on a regular basis of late and put in a solid performance in the 1-0 win in Morocco last Saturday

Willard Katsande seems to be heading close to his best form just when Kaizer Chiefs need it most as they try to navigate past Wydad Casablanca and into the Caf Champions League final.

Katsande had been in and out of the team earlier in the season and had seemingly not fully earned the trust of previous head coach Gavin Hunt.

Hunt was happy to give opportunities to more youthful midfielders such as Njabulo Blom, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Darrel Matsheke, while both Katsande and Kearyn Baccus struggled for game-time. Another veteran, Bernard Parker, has also been used in the heart of the engine room this season.

And so it’s difficult to really say who the team’s first choice is in the midfield holding position.

Katsande played in only 16 of his side’s 30 league matches this term and generally, did not impress that much.

However, his presence in the Champions League has been far more noteworthy – the former Ajax Cape Town hardman has played 10 games in the continent’s most prestigious club competition this season.

And he’s been the man entrusted to steer the ship in the centre of the park as Amakhosi have headed into the crucial final few games of the Champions League.

Lack of creativity a concern?

Katsande remains first and foremostly a destroyer and has never been a playmaker. This was again the case on the weekend against Wydad when he put in a solid if unspectacular display in central midfield.

Sometimes though, with other flair players around, a team needs a player such as Katsande to be the glue which holds it all together.

And interestingly, Katsande continues to enjoy the support of the Amakhosi fans. That’s judging by their voting for next season’s Carling Black Label Cup, which has been going on for the past few weeks.

As it stands on Tuesday, the 34-year-old has been selected by the supporters as one of two central midfielders, along with Ncgobo, and ahead of the likes of Blom, Baccus, Parker and Matsheke.

Whether however, the fans’ sentiment will be enough to keep him at the club beyond this season will remain to be seen.

Katsande has spent 10 years with the Glamour Boys, amassing 306 appearances, 17 goals, nine assists and 72 yellow cards.

The introduction of the video system is already being used in Europe’s top five leagues but why is Africa yet to fully implement the initiative?

The first time the Video Assistant Referee system was put on trial across Europe was in July 2016, during a friendly match pitting PSV Eindhoven and FC Eindhoven.

The VAR is a match official who reviews decisions made by the head referee with the use of video footage and headset for communication in order to try and reduce human errors causing substantial influence on match results.

The VAR team, stationed in the video operation room, automatically checks every on-field referee decision falling under the four reviewable categories and if the VAR does not identify any mistake during the check, this is communicated to the referee.

Some of the key decisions VAR checks include goals when there are any infringements leading up to it, review if a sending off is justified, check if the decision to award a penalty is correct or should one have been given for a foul, and look at yellow and red cards if there is a case of mistaken identity.

But how did Africa receive the technology, which was first written into the Laws of the Game by the International Football Association Board in 2018?

Which African nation was first to use VAR?

It was Morocco who became the first African country to use video technology in a top-flight league match featuring IRT Tangiers, who won the game 2-1 against FUS Rabat.

But prior to the top-tier fixture, the method had already been used in Morocco during the match between Difaa Hassani Jadidi and Tihad Athletic Sport on Saturday, November 9 in Tangier for the 2018-2019 Moroccan Throne Cup semi-finals.

The system was also used in the 2019 Afcon final in Egypt from the quarter-final stages onwards until the finals though Caf had originally planned to use it from the semi-final stage, it was brought in from the last eight.

Why are most African countries not using VAR?

Most African countries are yet to introduce the system in their local leagues because of the financial complications that are involved.

For example, Dr. Irvin Khoza of South Africa ruled out usage of the gadget in the country saying it was very expensive for the federation to manage.

“The costs implications are also a factor because there is a royalty that you pay every year for the service and there is an initial cost that goes with it,” Khoza said, as quoted by Chronicle .

“There is also a service fee that you pay every year, but more importantly is the suitability of the venues in installing VAR, which is one element, and VOL and GLT are others.”

How did Africans receive VAR?

The introduction of VAR across the world was received with mixed reactions among Africans, some felt it was a good decision to help control the game for fair results, while others felt it will not solve the problems.

For instance, a number of Kenyans feel the VAR should be done away with within top European leagues because of repeated mistakes, pointing at certain genuine goals being disallowed, and dubious penalties awarded during matches.

Ahead of the ongoing Euro tournament, Europe’s most senior refereeing officials admitted VAR was a “dangerous project” but Uefa moved ahead to commit extra resources to the technology.

The technology has also made work even harder for defenders, who fear to tackle balls while in the dangerzone since the rulebook of VAR suggests any amount of impermissible contact inside the penalty box will be given as a penalty.

It may take some time before we see VAR fully used in Africa’s top leagues after highly contentious decisions as a result of the technology across the top five European leagues.

2022 World Cup Qualifiers groups before and after the second round qualifying matches...

The second round of the 2022 World Cup and 2023 Asian Cup joint qualifiers concluded on June 15 and 12 teams from eight groups qualified to the third round of the World Cup qualifiers.

A total of 40 teams were divided into eights groups who competed for nearly two years (September 2019 to June 2021) and now top 12 teams - two from each group - will be playing in the third round. It has to be noted that DPR Korea, who were clubbed in Group 'H" withdrew themselves from the competition midway into the qualifiers.

The draw of the second round was held on July 17, 2019, in Kuala Lumpur and the teams were drawn on the basis of their seedings. Seedings were again based on the FIFA rankings of the team released on June 14, 2019.

The Blue Tigers ended their campaign with seven points registering four draws, three losses and one win from their eight matches. They scored six goals and conceded only seven.

Do rankings matter?

In most cases, the final group standings were the same as they were before the qualifiers started. On seven instances, we saw teams ranked higher than another team in their group finished a place below them in the final group standings.

Apart from Group G and F, the teams finished more or less as per their rankings. This shows that rankings are a good indicator of how groups might look like after the qualifiers.

‘It’s officially a wrap’ – Kamara quits Liberia after being left out of the starting line-up

Southgate's team selection has come under the scanner after England scored just one goal in their two matches so far...

England have not had the best of starts to their Euro 2020 campaign, labouring to a 1-0 win over Croatia in their opening game before being held to a goalless draw by Scotland last Saturday.

Having scored just one goal in two games, Gareth Southgate's side have looked a bit tedious in attack.

The manager's team selection has also come under fire, with the preferred front three of Harry Kane, Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling unimpressive so far. Kane, who is coming off a fantastic Premier League season individually where he scored 23 goals and registered 14 assists, looks tired and has not managed a single shot on target in two matches.

Sterling, despite scoring England's winner against Croatia, has not looked threatening either. His Manchester City teammate Foden, with huge weight of expectation on his young shoulders, has looked good in patches but is yet to make any meaningful contribution.

With outstanding forwards like Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish and even Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin sitting on the bench, the pressure has mounted on Southgate. There have been multiple calls from all quarters for Southgate to change his attacking line-up.

England have sealed qualification to the Round of 16 but if they are to win the group, they will need to beat Czech Republic. However, they could potentially also drop down to third spot and face a tougher opponent if they are beaten by Czech Republic.

As a key game approaches on Tuesday, which forward do you think should definitely play against Czech Republic? Vote and let us know.

The three strikers with most votes will be our fan choice England attack!

Four-goal Jesus: 'Not time' to talk City future

Messi has equalled Javier Mascherano’s 147 appearances for Argentina national team…

Argentina eked out a 1-0 win over Paraguay in a Group B Copa America 2020 fixture on Tuesday at the Estadio Nacional De Brasilia. Alejandro Gomez’s 10th minute strike separated the two sides as Paraguay struggled to create clear-cut opportunities to put pressure on Emiliano Martinez’s goal.

Lionel Messi, having scored and assisted a goal in the first two games in the Copa America, didn’t have a decisive impact in the attacking third, he still managed to add another feather to his cap.

Messi has now equalled Javier Mascherano’s 147 appearances for Albiceleste and should he be handed a start next week against Bolivia by coach Luis Scaloni, he would go on to be the most capped player for Argentina.

Mascherano took to social media and congratulated his former team-mate on reaching the milestone. He said, "Congratulations Leo for having reached the record appearances for Argentina. Nobody better than you to continue growing the legend and be the player with the most appearances in our National Team. Congratulations to the whole team for the victory and many more!"

When did Lionel Messi make his international debut?

The FC Barcelona skipper made his international debut for Argentina on August 17th, 2005 against Hungary, a game which they won 2-1. It must be remembered that his debut was amongst the most bizarre ones as he picked up a red card within a minute of being introduced by coach Jose Pekerman. He replaced Lisandro Lopez in the 64th minute and thereafter, caught Vilmos Vanczak with a stray elbow.

“He came through me and had hold of me and I wanted to break free. But the referee interpreted it as though I had tried to shove him away.

"I went on with a lot of time left in the game, but then what happened, happened. "It was not like I had dreamed it would be,” reminisced Messi.

Who are the top 10 most capped players for Argentina?

Number Name Appearances
1) Lionel Messi 147
2) Javier Mascherano 147
3) Javier Zanetti 143
4) Roberto Ayala 114
5) Angel Di Maria 107
6) Diego Simeone 103
7) Sergio Aguero 98
8) Oscar Ruggeri 97
9) Sergio Romero 96
10) Diego Maradona 91

Wilshere says Ozil truth will come out ‘one day’ as ex-Arsenal star remains open to MLS move

Only three foreign coaches who have worked in India had previous experience of managing teams in Copa America...

Copa America 2021 is underway and the top teams of South America are in action in Brazil.

It is one of the most-watched international competitions in India as numerous fans who support Brazil and Argentina.

But did you know that there are three coaches who have managed teams in Copa America and has also worked as managers in the Indian Super League (ISL)?

Let's find out who they are.

Antonio Habas (Bolivia, Copa America 1997)

With two ISL titles in his kitty, Spanish coach Antonio Lopez Habas is the most successful coach in the history of the league and is one of the finest tacticians working in India at present. But winning the ISL title twice is not the only achievement in Habas' prolonged managerial career.

In 1997, a 40-year-old Habas had led underdogs Bolivia to the final of the Copa America, their best finish in the competition since 1963 when they had won the title. Bolivia topped their group which comprised of teams like Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela and then defeated Colombia and Mexico in the quarterfinal and semifinal respectively to reach the final.

Unfortunately, they lost to a star-studded and then reigning World Cup champions Brazil, who had players like Romario, Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos, 3-1 and finished runners-up.

Alexandre Guimaraes (Costa Rica, Copa America 2001)

Costa Rican manager Alexandre Guimaraes was in charge of Mumbai City FC in two ISL seasons (2016, 2017-18). The Islanders had topped the league stage in 2016 under his tutelage but were knocked out of the play0offs by eventual champions ATK FC. It was the club's best finish in the league until last season when they topped the league stage as well as won the ISL title.

In 2001, Guimaraes was in charge of the Costa Rica national team and had guided them to the quarterfinal of Copa America that year. Costa Rica topped their group which had teams like Honduras, Uruguay and Bolivia.

In the quarterfinal though, they lost to Uruguay 2-1 and their campaign came to an end.

Cesar Farias (Bolivia, Copa America 2021)

Former NorthEast United coach Cesar Farias is in charge of the Bolivian national team at present and is currently leading the team in the ongoing Copa America 2021. Bolivia are currently last in Group A as they lost their first two matches against Paraguay (3-1) and Chile (1-0). They next face Uruguay on June 24.

Farias was in charge of the Highlanders in ISL 2015 where they finished fifth on the points table with 20 points from 14 matches.

Big boost for Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards as Betsafe launches operations in Kenya

The 19-year-old midfield sensation revelled training with the Primeira Liga side, while hoping to seal a permanent place in Alvaro Pacheco’s squad

Nigerian wonderkid Emmanuel Adeyemo is thrilled to have trained with FC Vizela first team on Monday as the Primeira Liga side stepped up preparations for the 2021-22 campaign.

The 19-year-old has been impressive for the club’s U19 and U23 teams since joining them in January 2021 for an undisclosed fee.

Now, he is set to go straight into Alvaro Pacheco’s squad following his promotion to the first team.

Narrating his experience, the FC Porto target described his first training with Vizela senior team as the ‘proudest moment of his career'.

“It felt amazing and I can say it boldly that this is the proudest moment of my career so far,” Adeyemo told Goal.

“I was a bit scared nervous heading for training with the big boys because I wasn’t sure of what the reception would look like.

“Nevertheless, the fear vanished the moment we stepped onto the pitch. The senior players were welcoming, and I was able to learn a few things from them also.

“I count it a rare privilege sharing the pitch with great players like Andre Soares, Raphael Guzzo and Kiki.”

“For me, training with the senior squad is a big deal because it is not an everyday thing seeing players in the youth team get a chance to train with the first team,” he continued.

“Having this in mind, I will keep working hard to ensure that my place in coach Pacheco’s team is guaranteed.

“Overall, I am happy with my performance in training. Tomorrow [Tuesday] is another day and I’ll try my best to get better.

“This is a big challenge for me but, I strongly believe that I have what it takes to excel.

“It is not going to be easy for sure, but with hard work, determination and taking to my coaches’ instructions, I am upbeat that things will work out fine for me.”

Having finished second in the 2020-21 Segunda Liga campaign – where they amassed 66 points from 34 league outings, Vizela returned to the Portuguese elite division after 36 years.

They were relegated after finishing in 16th position in the 1984–85 season.

Reece James jumps to the defence of Trent Alexander-Arnold

Paraguay started their tournament off on the right foot with a 3-1 victory over Bolivia, with both Angel Romero and Kaku finding the back of the net. The win for Eduardo Berizzo’s side was their first since beating Venezuela 1-0 in World Cup qualifying in October 2020, though in that time they’ve managed credible draws against both Brazil and Argentina.

Argentina successfully ended a streak of three straight draws last time out with a tight 1-0 win over Uruguay - good enough for second in the group behind Chile ahead of kick-off. The three points against Paraguay would guarantee Lionel Scaloni’s side a place in the next round, though Argentina have failed to beat tonight’s opponents in their last four meetings - a run that stretches back to 2015.
