Why Chelsea cannot recall Conor Gallagher from Crystal Palace loan in January

The 2018/19 PSL Player's Player of the Season is happy at the Houghton-based giants according to his representative

Orlando Pirates forward Thembinkosi Lorch's agent has addressed rumours linking his client with Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 27-year-old player had an average season by his own standards in the 2020/21 campaign and there were reports that he was unhappy at the Soweto giants.

Lorch made it known that he was unhappy to have missed out on a chance to move to Europe in the past after being heavily linked with Belgian clubs Royal Union Saint-Gilloise and Club Brugge and French sides Dijon FC and Toulouse.

It was said that Bucs had rejected offers from abroad as they were deemed not good enough and it was also reported that Lorch could force a move to one of Pirates' main rivals, Chiefs and Sundowns in the upcoming transfer window.

However, Lorch's agent, Jazzman Mahlakgane has now stated that the Bafana Bafana international is not going anywhere.

“Lorch is currently on holiday and he is not going anywhere. He will still be a Pirates player,” Mahlakgane told Sowetan

“I am his manager, if there are interests for him, I should know them and I’m the one who will be negotiating for his deal. At the moment, there is nothing for Lorch. He is still contracted to Pirates.

“I have been getting this question recently and I have made it clear that he is not going anywhere. I can confirm that.”

Mahlakgane went on to rubbish reports that the 2018/19 PSL Footballer of the Year is unhappy at the Houghton-based giants.

“If there is anything, you would have known, those things are not true. Lorch is happy at Pirates and will remain at the club," he concluded.

Lorch, who struggled with injuries, made 24 appearances across all competitions for the Buccaneers during the 2020/21 season and he scored three goals and provided four assists.

He played a vital role in helping Pirates clinch the 2020 MTN8 title scoring two goals in two matches including one in the final against hometown club, Bloemfontein Celtic.

adidas drop innovative new COPA SENSE

The former Bafana Bafana international can now focus on impressing coach Benni McCarthy and win back his place in the starting line-up

AmaZulu FC striker Bonginkosi Ntuli's agent has provided an update on the player's future ahead of the upcoming July-August transfer window.

The 30-year-old player has been constantly linked with Orlando Pirates since last year having established himself as one of the top strikers in the PSL.

Pirates were expected to make a move for Ntuli with his contract set to expire at the end of this month.

However, Ntuli's agent, Mandla Mthembu has now revealed that AmaZulu have tied down Ntuli on a long-term deal as they prepare for the 2021/22 season.

Mthembu explained that his client can now focus on fighting for his place in the starting line-up after sorting out his future with the Durban-based club.

“In terms of his immediate future contractually, it is sorted,” said Mthembu on Daily Sun .

“So, far as his playing time or time spent on the field, is a concern from last season. Hopefully, in the new season, he will do well. But we have secured his long-term goal.”

Ntuli struggled for game time and with injuries in the 2020/21 season which saw him make just seven appearances in the PSL and net two goals in the process.

The likes of Lehlohonolo Majoro, Siphelele Mthembu, Augustine Mulenga and Luvuyo Memela were preferred ahead of Ntuli by coaches Ayanda Dlamini and Benni McCarthy.

Prior to the 2020/21 campaign, Ntuli had enjoyed his best season in the top-flight as he netted 13 goals from 29 starts.

His goalscoring form in the Bio-Bubble in Gauteng helped AmaZulu avoid relegation from the elite league and the club was able to keep him amidst reported interest from Pirates.

Ntuli, who is a former Bafana Bafana international, has scored 22 goals in 62 league matches for Usuthu since he rejoined the club from Mamelodi Sundowns in July 2018.

The former Lamontville Golden Arrows marksman spent the second round of the 2014/15 campaign on loan at AmaZulu from Sundowns - scoring six goals in 12 league matches.

'What is going on?!' - Wilshere perplexed as Arsenal confirm Bould exit

The Gunners' U23s boss is leaving this summer after a 33-year association with the club

Jack Wilshere has expressed his dismay after Arsenal confirmed the departure of Under-23s manager Steve Bould, ending a 33-year relationship between the former centre-back and the club.

As Goal revealed in May,  Bould - who took over as U23s boss from Freddie Ljungberg in 2019 - had been sacked by Arsenal following a difficult season in Premier League 2, with the Gunners finishing in 10th.

Bould, both as a defender and then in various coaching roles, has been synonymous with Arsenal through his career, and the official confirmation of his departure on Tuesday led to a shocked and disappointed reaction from those who have worked with him.

What has been said?

Arsenal academy manager Per Mertesacker told the club's official website : "Steve has been a fantastic servant for us on and off the pitch. His record as a player speaks for itself and he has been an inspiration to generations of young players coming through the academy.

"This has been a very hard decision to make. Steve’s contribution to the under-23s and the club as a whole has been huge and he will always be an important figure in our history."

Gunners technical director Edu added: "We are massively grateful to Steve for everything. He has helped develop so many top professionals and his experience and character has had a huge impact. I would like to add my thanks for his contribution and wish him and his family well for the future."

What has been the reaction?

Wilshere, who won the FA Youth Cup under Bould with Arsenal in 2009, was astonished by the north London club's decision to cut away more than three decades of loyal service and expertise.

He wrote on Twitter : "Can't believe it. Another proper Arsenal man gone! What is going on? What a coach and what a guy. All the best Bouldy."

Who is Steve Bould?

Bould made a total of 372 appearances for Arsenal between 1988 and 1999, lifting three league titles, the FA Cup as part of their double-winning season of 1991, the League Cup and the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

He joined the coaching staff as a youth team coach in 2001 and won the FA Youth Cup with the U18s with a team featuring Wilshere, Francis Coquelin and Henri Lansbury.

He then replaced Pat Rice as first-team assistant manager in 2012 and served as Arsene Wenger's No.2 during his final six seasons at Emirates Stadium, before switching roles to become U23s boss.

How did Orlando Pirates get their name? - Goalpedia

Every football club's name has a story and the Buccaneers are no exception with the team having existed since the 1930s

Known as one of the oldest football clubs in South Africa, Orlando Pirates were officially established in 1937.

It is often forgotten that Pirates were initially known as the Orlando Boys Club having been originally formed in 1934 by a small band of teenagers based in an urban area of Soweto, Orlando.

Orlando was named after England-born politician Edwin Orlando Leake, who served as the Mayor of the biggest city in South Africa, Johannesburg from 1925 to 1926.

Little did the teenagers know that the football club would grow into one of the biggest teams in the country and among the giants of African football.

Founding Fathers

Andries 'Pele Pele' Mkhwanazi and Bethuel Mokgosinyana are known to be the founding fathers of Orlando Pirates FC having played instrumental roles in the club's early existence.

Mkhwanazi encouraged the official formation of a club in 1937 and the team was then able to start competing in the Johannesburg Bantu Football Association (JBFA).

The boxing instructor teamed up with Mokgosinyana in 1939 and the latter went on to become the club's first president in 1940.

The club was named 'Pirates' after the 1940 film The Sea Hawk starring Errol Flynn which was popular at the time in South Africa.

Mokgosinyana and other club officials were dazzled by the fierceness and tenacity of the fighters they were watching in the film hence they decided to name the team, Pirates.

The team got their first kit which was black and white and from their ambitious leader, Mokgosinyana, who was a social worker, and the jerseys had a big P on the front.

Mokgosinyana went all out for Pirates as he also built a room at his home in Orlando East, Soweto which became the club's first clubhouse where the team could camp before their matches.

Pirates legend Sam Shabangu, who was one of the original 11 team members, described Mokgosinyana as a respected community leader in Orlando.

"He was a very respectable man, one of the elder people we consulted when things were going wrong," Shabangu told Sunday Times

"Clean-living and always smartly dressed, Mokgosinyana was a respected community leader who placed other people's needs above his own."

A key member of the team, Andrew 'Hassie' Bassie, who was a goalkeeper by trade, then came up with the name, 'Orlando Pirates' which was accepted in the early 1940s.

Club badge and nicknames

The famous skull and crossbones were then introduced onto the team’s jersey as the club's badge in the late 1940s and since then they have been associated with the Soweto side.

Skull and crossbones symbol has been used by pirate ships for many years to inform targets they are about to attack and Pirates players make their trademark of crossing their wrists to greet their fans before their matches start.

One of the team's first nicknames was 'AmaPirates' and the club now has bynames such as the Sea Robbers, Bucs, Buccaneers and Ezimnyama Ngenkani (the black ones in isiZulu).

Today, Bucs and their Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs, who were formed in 1970 by a former Pirates player Kaizer Motaung, are widely considered to be the two biggest football clubs in South Africa.

Soweto Derby matches between Pirates and Chiefs are one of the most fiercely contested derbies in world football and they attract a large following in the Southern African region.

Bucs have won nine national league titles and only Chiefs (13) and Mamelodi Sundowns (14) have won more and the three clubs are called the Big Three in South African football circles.

Pirates' fans, who are also known as the Ghost, often boast about their team being the first club from Southern Africa to have won the Caf Champions League title having achieved this in 1995.

When Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni was in awe of India U20 stars Amarjit Singh and Jeakson Singh

Three years ago, India U20 side defeated Lionel Scaloni's Argentina U20 2-1...

Three years ago on August 6, 2018, India U20 side stunned Argentina U20s 2-1 in a COTIF Cup 2018 tie in L'Alcúdia, Spain.

Deepak Tangri broke the deadlock in India's favour in the fourth minute of the match and Anwar Ali extended the lead in the 68th minute with a stunning free-kick from 30 yards. Early into the second half, Floyd Pinto's side were reduced to 10 men after Aniket Jadhav was sent off in the 54th minute.

Argentina pulled one back in the 72nd minute of the match but the Indian colts managed to clinch the three points in the end.

After the match, then Argentina U20 manager and current Argentina senior national team coach Lionel Scaloni heaped praises on the Indian team and mentioned how midfielders Amarjit Singh and Jeakson Singh impressed him the most.

Scaloni, who worked as an assistant coach under former Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli, replaced his boss at the helm after the 2018 World Cup. Scaloni along with Argentina legend Pablo Aimar was appointed as the caretaker manager of the senior national team in August 2018. In November 2018, Scaloni was confirmed as the full-time coach of Argentina.

Aimar and Scaloni was also temporarily in charge of the Argentina U20 side when the COTIF Cup was held. While Aimar served as the technical director of the team, Scaloni worked as the caretaker manager.

'Indian players have a bright future ahead'

“Indian Captain Amarjit Singh played very well against Argentina and Jeakson Singh was very impressive in the manner he played against Murcia.

“If India continue to play like this for three or four more years, the players have a bright future ahead. We are happy to meet these young players. The Indian team were very well behaved in the team hotel and there was mutual respect between both the teams," Scaloni told the All India Football Federation (AIFF) after the match.

India's starting XI against Argentina

Prabhsukhan Gill (GK), Asish Rai, Jitendra Singh, Anwar Ali, Sahil Panwar, Boris Singh Thangjam, Suresh Singh Wangjam, Deepak Tangri, Amarjit Singh Kiyam (C), Ninthoinganba Meetei, Aniket Jadhav.

India's performance in the COTIF CUP

Floyd Pinto's India colts played four matches in the competition. In their first match, they lost 2-0 to Murcia U20 side followed by a heavy 3-0 defeat to Mauritania U20 side.

In their third match, the Blue cubs managed to hold Venezuela U20 to a goalless draw before registering their historic win over La Albiceleste colts in their final game of the tournament.

Emmanuel Dennis: Why have Watford signed controversial forward?

The 23-year-old’s attitude may be questioned at times, but he seemingly fits the profile of central striker favoured by Xisco

For every reminder of Emmanuel Dennis’s brace in Club Brugge’s 2-2 draw at Real Madrid in October 2019, there are several warnings of a player with apparent attitude problems.

While this tag, which has followed the Nigerian to the present day, may come off as harsh, seemingly refusing to get on the bus before a Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund because his preferred seat was occupied appeared extraordinarily juvenile.

It reflects badly on the 23-year-old that former Cologne sporting director Horst Heldt looked to regret the mid-season loan signing of the frontman in a recent interview with Mobil Express.

“He’s not an easy guy. We knew about this problem, but we took too much risk. We misjudged that,” Heldt admitted to the German sports website in early June. “Dennis caused a stir because his behaviour was not what the squad needs to be doing. We then dropped him because our priority was the group.

“That was a bad transfer, that is my responsibility.”

That assessment is likely to worry Watford supporters given the Nigeria international’s move to Hertfordshire. Indeed, it will come as a surprise to many that the Hornets have acquired a player who’s scored twice in his last 23 appearances for Club Brugge and Cologne.

His last goal came in a DFB Pokal encounter against Jahn Regensburg in early February, a game where the forward missed a 78th-minute penalty to send The Billy Goats 3-2 up. His performances for the struggling Bundesliga side never really picked up and, by April, he was being left out by Markus Gisdol.

Gisdol omitted the forward in what turned out to be his final game in charge of the club against Mainz and his replacement, Friedhelm Funkel, played him once.

Dennis got 90 minutes in Cologne’s 3-0 defeat by Bayer Leverkusen before the 67-year-old decided he’d seen enough and the Nigerian failed to play in the final five Bundesliga fixtures and also missed the relegation playoffs as well.

The aforementioned will raise doubts from the Hornets fanbase over the signing of Dennis, although one expects they’d give him time to show what he can do before evaluating the West African. It may well prove to be a masterstroke or an unmitigated disaster.

Frankly, the jury’s still out and may well be the case for a while, but the club’s logic in opting for the alleged headstrong striker is sound.

Last season, NXGN nominee Joao Pedro was the club’s principal central striker, but he certainly never played like an out-and-out centre-forward.

Rather than simply function like an old-fashioned poacher, the Brazilian tended to drift to the flanks, seemingly acting as a winger or inside forward at times.

However, the majority of his in-play goals were one-touch finishes after holding his run in the middle of the penalty area, making a far-post run or darting to the near post to connect to a cross.

Eight of his nine goals came inside the box (two were penalties) but there may be a misguided sentiment to recognise him as a poacher.

Pedro’s tendency to drift to the flanks and take players on saw him complete 1.6 dribbles per game, which was a higher average than all but one Watford player: Ismaila Sarr.

The Senegal winger averaged 1.9 dribbles in the Championship last season and the little difference in both players further clarifies any ill-judgement of Pedro’s profile.

Thus, maybe it is no surprise that Dennis has been signed by the newly-promoted side looking to maintain their top flight status after 38 Premier League games next season.

Like Pedro, Dennis is equally deployed in a central attacking role but the West African mostly prefers to drift to the flanks. Despite a rather underwhelming time on loan in Germany, the forward still averaged 1.2 successful dribbles per game — only Ondrej Duda (1.6 per game) had more.

Watford’s young frontmen may not be the most prolific — Pedro netted nine times in 38 appearances (31 starts) — but their similarity may well prove to be an asset to Xisco as he seeks to navigate a tough campaign in the Premier League.

Dennis’ arrival is likely to prompt sales in the team’s bloated attack comprising no less than eight bodies available to Xisco.

One player whose place could be under threat is Isaac Success, whose injury problems have blighted his time at the club.

He started only three times in 2020/21 and one of those saw him score the second in a 2-0 victory over Swansea City on the final day of the season.

The aforementioned strike was Success’ first goal since an FA Cup strike vs Newcastle United in January 2019 and first league goal since October 2018, but his time in Hertfordshire may be brought to an end due to his countryman’s acquisition.

Success still has two years on his contract, though, and it remains to be seen if there’ll be any takers for the injury-prone forward if the club look to move him on in any capacity this summer.

As for Dennis, his flawed nature means eyebrows were raised after the club announced the deal on Monday.

Regardless, it'll be up to him to demonstrate he can hack it in a league thoroughly unforgiving as he looks to silence the doubting Thomases questioning the club’s willingness to back a problematic frontman.

Portugal vs France: Team news & key stats

Ousmane Dembele has been ruled out of the rest of the tournament after the injury-prone Barcelona forward suffered a muscle problem.

Portugal are likely to still be without injured pair Joao Felix and Nuno Mendes.

Key stats:

Portugal have won only one of their last 13 matches against France (D1 L11), that was the UEFA European Championship final in 2016, played at the Stade de France.
The last four matches between Portugal and France have only produced three goals (2 for France, 1 for Portugal).
Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo has never scored against France. In fact, they are the opponent against which he’s played the most often without ever finding the back of the net in international football (6 games, 439 minutes).
Last time out versus Germany (2-4), Portugal became the first reigning champions in European Championship history to concede four goals in a single match in the competition. Indeed, Portugal had never conceded four goals in a single European Championship match before facing Germany on MD2

Captain Sergio Busquets is available again after testing negative for Coronavirus that ruled him out of the early stages of the tournament. Spain's Luis Enrique may opt to start Thiago Alcantara and Chelsea's Champions League winning defender Cesar Azpilicueta.

Slovakia remain without injured Ivan Schranz, while Denis Vavro is still unavailable after testing positive for Coronavirus.

Key stats:

Spain have won all three of their previous matches on home soil against Slovakia, scoring 11 goals and conceding two.

Germany vs Hungary: Team news & key stats

Thomas Muller is unlikely to feature against Hungary after suffering a knee injury against Portugal, while Mats Hummels, Klostermann and Ilkay Gundogan will also face fitness tests after having missed training on Monday.

Hungary's Adam Szalai will need to be assessed after coming off in the first half against France following a knock to the head.

Key stats:

Germany and Hungary’s only previous meeting in Munich was 110 years ago, in a friendly played in December 1911 at the city’s MTV-Platz stadium. Hungary won 4-1.
Hungary are without a win in each of their last five matches at the European Championships (D3 L2) since a 2-0 victory against Austria in 2016. Indeed, that 2-0 win vs Austria is the Hungarians’ only clean sheet in their 10 matches at the European Championships.
Germany were eliminated from the group stages at the 2018 World Cup; they have never gone out at the group stage of consecutive major tournaments (World Cup and Euros).

Hungary haven’t won their third and final group stage game of a major international tournament (World Cup and Euros) since the 1966 World Cup when they beat Bulgaria 3-1. Since then, they have failed to win their final group game at the 1978 World Cup (1-3 loss to France), 1982 World Cup (1-1 draw with Belgium), 1986 World Cup (0-3 loss to France) and EURO 2016 (3-3 draw with Portugal).

Carabao Cup fourth round draw: Arsenal vs Leeds, Chelsea vs Southampton & more

Though the club remains in constant dialogue with Jorge Messi, the player's father and agent, no official offer has been made

Barcelona and Lionel Messi are in talks but have yet to agree on a contract extension, Goal can confirm.

Messi's deal at Camp Nou is set to expire at the end of June, meaning he will be a free agent in just over a week.

Though Barcelona remain optimistic over Messi signing an extension, no breakthrough on a new deal appears to be imminent.

What is the state of talks?

Though the outline of a formal proposal continues to be discussed, Goal understands that the Blaugrana have yet to make an official offer to Messi.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta and Jorge Messi, the player's father and agent, remain in constant dialogue over a new deal.

Messi, meanwhile, remains focused on the Copa America, where he is currently competing with Argentina.

The 33-year-old's priority is not economic. Instead, he is looking for assurances Barcelona can put a more competitive team on the pitch around him as he enters the twilight of his career.

Barca won the Copa del Rey last term, but fell short in the Champions League and La Liga.

How did Messi perform last season?

Despite Barcelona enduring a disappointing 2020-21 season, Messi was once again the top scorer in La Liga. He netted 30 goals in 35 appearances in the league - seven more than nearest challenger Gerard Moreno.

He also scored five times in the Champions League and three in the Copa del Rey.

Fernandes has ghosted for Portugal at Euro 2020 - Mourinho

The midfielder has been accused of not showing up for his country amid a difficult start to the tournament

Jose Mourinho has claimed Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes has ghosted at Euro 2020, taking up space on the pitch but "not playing".

The Roma manager said Fernandes has "incredible potential" but isn't showing the same abilities he usually offers at club level with Manchester United.

Still, Mourinho expressed hope that the player would turn up on Wednesday against France in Portugal's final group stage match.

What has been said?

"Portugal at its highest level can beat anyone," Mourinho said on talkSPORT.

"But we need to play with 11 players, in these two matches Bruno Fernandes was on the pitch but not playing.

"I hope he turns up against France, because he's a player with incredible potential.

"He can pass, he can score. He can get penalties, he can score penalties, he can score free kicks. He has a lot to give, but the reality is in these two matches he was not there.

"Portugal has three fantastic attacking players, Bernardo Silva, Cristiano [Ronaldo] and [Diogo] Jota.

"We need that connection, but until now Bruno is not playing."

Fernandes at Euro 2020

Fernando has started both of Portugal's matches but was pulled after just 63 minutes vs Germany during a 4-2 defeat.

He has put just one shot on target to this point in the competition.

Portugal advancement scenarios

Portugal would go through to the knockout stage if they avoid defeat against France on Wednesday. They would finish first if they win and Germany do not (Die Mannschaft are heavily favoured vs Hungary at Allianz Arena).

A loss paired with a Germany defeat, however, would see them drop all the way down to fourth in Group F.

"Hungary’s last match was against France the world champions and they drew 1-1," manager Fernando Santos told reporters.

"A lot of people had written off Hungary's chances but now they’ll be playing against Germany. We know that all we need to do is win, but before losing to Germany it was all up to us all well. It was in our grasp.

"We want to move on and we [want to] depend on ourselves in order to progress. "

'Really complicated' - Southgate admits Mount & Chilwell unlikely to start in Euro 2020 last 16

The Chelsea pair entered quarantine after they came into close contact with Billy Gilmour after England's match against Scotland

Gareth Southgate has admitted that it will be "very complicated" for Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell to start England's last-16 match after they were forced into self-isolation.

The Chelsea pair went into quarantine after coming into close contact with Scotland's Billy Gilmour, who subsequently tested positive for Covid-19.

Mount and Chilwell both missed England's 1-0 win over the Czech Republic on Tuesday, which clinched first place in Group D for the Three Lions.

What was said?

"We think the quarantine ends midnight of match day," England manager Southgate said on BBC Radio 5 Live after England's win over the Czechs.

"What we don't know is how much training they can do and what might be possible. They can obviously train individually and we think there might be a period where they can train in groups distanced, but I'm not sure they can join in the whole group.

"So the reality is it's really complicated for them to start in the game next week."

Questions raised over decision

Mount and Chilwell spoke with club team-mate Gilmour on the pitch after England's draw with Scotland, and Chelsea technical and performances advisor Petr Cech hit out at the logic behind the two players being forced to isolate when Scotland's players did not do so.

On Instagram, Cech asked: "Please could someone help me understand how it is possible Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell - both with negative tests - have to isolate after they got in contact with Billy Gilmour while the entire Scottish team, who shared the dressing room, hotel, coach and plane while travelling, [dining] room and meeting room, is allowed to play the game without any problem because they returned with the required negative tests?

Who will England face in the last 16?

As Group D winners, England will face the second-place finisher in Group F at Wembley on June 29.

That means England's opponents will be either Germany, France, Portugal or Hungary.

Donny van de Beek 'wants to leave' Man Utd over lack of minutes

The 26-year-old striker scored her 17th league goal of the current season as the Blaugranes silenced Iraia Iturregi’s women away from home

Asisat Oshoala was on song as Barcelona subdued Athletic Bilbao 4-0 in Tuesday’s Primera Division encounter.

The 26-year-old was on target in the second half as the Blaugranes strolled past the Lionesses away from home.

Despite returning from international assignment a few days before the fixture, the Super Falcons captain was handed a starter’s role by coach Lluis Cortes.

However, she was played from the midfield alongside Kheira Hamraoui and Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic.

Buoyed by their 3-2 triumph over Madrid their last time out, Barcelona took the lead in 22nd courtesy of Patricia Guijarro.

The Spanish midfielder headed past goalkeeper Amaia Pena a well-taken corner kick from compatriot Mapi Leon.

Ten minutes later, debutant Berta Bou added a second goal as the visiting side went into the half time break with a two-goal lead.

Cortes’ side continued their dominance in the second half-time and that paid off in the 61st minute when the four-time African Women's Player of the Year slotted the ball past Pena after capitalising on a shambolic defending from the hosts.

That effort was her 17th in the 2020-21 campaign, and she is now only three goals shy of her best tally in Europe.

Another defensive mishap by Athletic Bilbao saw substitute Alexia Putellas skip past her markers before wrapping up the game with ten minutes left to play.

Oshoala would be hoping to increase her goal tally when Barcelona welcome Sporting de Huelva to the Estadi Johan Cruyff on Thursday, June 24.  For Iraia Iturregi’s team, they would be hoping to return to winning ways with a trip to Deportivo de La Coruna on Sunday.

Following the Spanish side’s defeat of Chelsea in the Uefa Women’s Champions League final, the former FC Robo star became the first Nigerian as well as the first African to win the competition.

After the feat, she expressed her hope that it would inspire other young girls in Africa to chase their dreams.

"I can only thank God who has made everything possible through sheer hard work, by playing alongside this incredibly talented group that creates a lovely family atmosphere,” Oshoala told BBC Sport Africa.

"It is a great feeling and I can't really put my emotions into words because it has been a tough journey to get here.

"I hope this will continue to inspire other young girls in Africa and motivate everyone around the world that you can achieve whatever you put your mind to and work hard for it."

'Grealish & Saka have brought England to life!' - Pair lauded as Three Lions defeat Czechs at Euro 2020

The duo played a major role in the Three Lions' only goal as they defeated the Czech Republic

Jack Grealish and Bukayo Saka hadn't been given much of a chance to impress for England at Euro 2020 before Tuesday.

But Gareth Southgate handed both players starts against the Czech Republic in their Group D finale, and the duo made their impact felt.

Grealish directed much of the play in the middle and grabbed the assist for Raheem Sterling's first-half opener, while UEFA named Saka the Star of the Match as England defeated the Czechs 1-0 at Wembley.

Making the most of their chances

Grealish had made one appearance off the bench in England's first two Euro 2020 matches, while Saka had not played at all.

But both players played a major part in England's opener, with Saka carrying the ball forward and beating his defender to find Grealish, who also beat his man and stood up an inviting ball to the back post for Sterling to head home.

What was said?

"The manager told me to go out and express myself, to play how I have played for my club all season," Saka told ITV. "Sometimes that means driving at the opponents and I did that and got us up the pitch.

"It was a good cross from Jack for the goal and Raheem was in the right place at the right time again."

Sterling added: "Jack and Bukayo got in the pockets really well, turned and were positive. It is brilliant to have these players around you who can create goals.

"Different players are needed for different games and those two that came in were massive and did what they needed to do."

The word on social media

Some Arsenal fans on Twitter picked up on the duo's chemistry, urging the Gunners to buy Grealish from Aston Villa in a move that has been rumoured for some time.

Plenty of other observers simply pointed out the sheer class of the pair, who could be set to play a major role as England advanced to the round of 16.

Smith scores brace to power USWNT past Vietnam

The former France youth international of Comorian and Mauritian descent has teamed up with the Blood and Gold after leaving Les Violets

French top-flight side RC Lens have announced the signing of Comoros and Mauritius prospect Wesley Said from Toulouse.

Although he scored two goals in 23 league games in the 2020-21 campaign, that could not prevent Les Violets from getting demoted to Ligue 2.

However, the Blood and Gold have signed him for three years for an undisclosed fee – meaning he would stay at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis until 2024.

“In a not very lively transfer market, Racing continues to advance!  Beyond the significant contract extensions, the Artesian club registers its fourth recruit with the arrival of a player well known to the followers of Ligue 1, determined to revive under the colours blood and gold: Wesley Said,” a statement from Lens website read.

“The striker arrives with the firm intention of demonstrating all the potential he has already confirmed during his stints in Rennes, Laval, Dijon and in Toulouse.

“A small, lively, fast and sharp technical size, Wesley has a great experience as a player with nearly 160 professional matches to his credit from the top of his 26 years.”

With this move, Said reunited with manager Franck Haise, a coach he training under at Rennes when he was 11 years old.

"I have many good memories of Wesley and with him, many victories!” Haise said of his arrival.

“He was always outclassed and therefore played all the time against opponents who were two years older.

“He is a very complete striker who will bring us a lot especially in systems with a two-headed attack and a close attacking midfielder.”

Lens’ general manager Arnaud Pouille also expressed his delight with the arrival of the 26-year-old.

"We felt at Wesley a very strong desire to join us and resume the thread of its progress,” he opined.

“The presentation of the fervent context that envelops the club was also greatly facilitated since his wife is from Lens.

“We, in these conditions, unanimously thought that his arrival represented a great opportunity for Racing."

Born in Noisy-le-Grand, France, the winger is eligible to switch allegiance to either Comoros or Mauritius at international level despite representing the Europeans at U16, U17, U18, U19, U20 and U21 level.

Smith: USWNT has lot more to give after 3-0 win

The towering Kenya defender signed a four-year deal which will see him stay in Belgium until 2025, and his countryman voiced his opinion on the matter

Kenya international Duncan Otieno has congratulated Joseph Ouma, who recently sealed a move to Belgium top tier side KAA Gent.

The 24-year-old was signed from Swedish heavyweights IF Elfsborg on a four-year deal. The Lusaka Dynamos midfielder believes the move has proven nothing is impossible through "discipline, prayer and hard work".

"It is a theme of joy to see Okumu dine with the big boys in Europe and I take this opportunity to congratulate him," Otieno told Goal on Tuesday.

"The move is so motivating; just the other day we played together in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League and now he is making a great move to Gent.

"It is so encouraging and it shows nothing is impossible through discipline, prayer, and hard work."

Scottish champions Rangers and local rivals Celtic were the other teams rumoured to chase the defender but he opted to go to Belgium.

The former AFC Leopards midfielder believes it was the right decision.

"I think he made the right decision, I am sure, for growth and at this point of his career he needs more playtime and I am sure that is why he might have chosen Gent over the other clubs," Otieno concluded.

Gent handed the centre-back a four-year contract that will see him stay there until 2025.

The former Chemelil Sugar player has had an impressive season with Elfsborg and attracted reported interest from a host of sides, mainly from Lorient and Reims of France, and Rangers FC and Celtic of Scotland.

'Crouch', as the former Real Monarchs star is known, joined the Swedish side after participating in the Africa Cup of Nations with Harambee Stars in 2019.

Although Kenya did not do well in the tournament, the centre-back showed his brilliance especially after being called up to fill the void that injuries created in the national team.

Since then, he has been an undroppable figure for Jacob 'Ghost' Mulee's side.

Mahrez: Manchester City star proposes to girlfriend with £400k ring

After 16 months of dating, the Algeria international has wooed the daughter of former Norwich City and Sheffield United striker Ashley Ward

Algeria international and Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez showed his romantic side as he proposed to his fiancee Taylor Ward.

Taylor, 23, is the daughter of Real Housewives Of Cheshire star Dawn and former Norwich City and Sheffield United striker Ashley Ward.

During the lovers’ luxury trip to Mykonos on Monday in the company of family and friends – which included Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland, the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations winner popped the question with an engagement ring worth £400k.

In a post on social media, the two-time African Player of the Year winner disclosed this development.

“So happy for everything you are the best, you’re the one I need in my life forever,” Mahrez wrote on Instagram.

On the other hand, Taylor went on Instagram to share a loved-up snap with the caption “There’s no one I’d rather do this life with, here’s to a lifetime of us. Can’t wait to grow old together I Love You.”

The former Leicester City star was initially married for six years to former model Rita Johal – with the union producing two girls.

Mahrez made his name at Leicester – a team he joined from Le Havre in France’s second tier in 2014.

After winning the English top-flight with the Foxes, he moved to Etihad Stadium and has become an important member of Pep Guardiola’s squad.

In the just-concluded campaign, the Algerian star accounted for nine goals in 27 league games as the Citizens won the 2020-21 league title.

Speaking to RMC in a recent interview, Mahrez disclosed that given the opportunity, he would finish his career at City.

“My future? I feel very good at Man City. There is no desire to look elsewhere,” he said.

“I don't know yet what my situation will be. But I'm happy in city and that's where I want to be.”

When asked which of his three Premier League title wins he enjoyed the most, he replied: “The Leicester title was the very first one I won and with a team not at all expected to achieve that.

“It will always remain a special memory. Now, with City, it's really not easy to win the league.

“Every year, the competition pushes us. When Liverpool took our title from us, we weren't happy. And that motivated us. So, this title is also very special.”
