Erik ten Hag discusses Man Utd's hopes of winning quadruple

Kerala Blasters midfielder Sahal Abdul Samad has one goal and two assists in his two full seasons in ISL...

Sahal Abdul Samad is one of the many Indian footballers whose life changed after the introduction of the Indian Super League (ISL).

For Sahal, the decision to sign for Kerala Blasters has turned his life around. He started out with the reserve team, impressed David James with his performances and earned a first-team spot. He has not had to look back ever since.

His glittering midfield displays in the 2018-19 season even though the team failed to perform as a whole caught the eyes of football aficionados and pundits alike. He also won the Emerging Player of the Season gong from both the ISL and the All India Football Federation (AIFF).

Going into the seventh season of ISL, Sahal now has to show the world that the hype is real.

Footballers love to perform in front of a large crowd. But with the ISL matches set to be played behind closed doors in Goa this season. it is also an opportunity to convey a message about how good a player is to the fans back at home.

Like many of his teammates, Sahal also struggled on the field during what was an injury-hit campaign under Eelco Schattorie last season. After starting 16 matches in the previous season, last season saw the Kerala midfielder only getting nine starts.

The talented Malayali footballer has one goal and two assists to his name in two full seasons of ISL - not a pretty statistic even for a midfielder. The two assists he has were registered when he was given chance last season but there were defensive flaws in the player's game that were exposed due to the system in which the team played and the number of injuries that the squad endured.

With the ball at his feet, Sahal is a delight to watch at time. His national teammate Sunil Chhetri holds him in high regard and with good reason. But the last thing he himself would want is a tag of 'one-season wonder.'

Indian football's history teaches us how wonder kids can slowly fade away and fail to reach their potential. With a lot of expectations and attention on Sahal to play a key role in Kibu Vicuna's midfield, the 2020-21 season will define the kind of talent that he is.

Kerala Blasters are once again a new team this season. Sahal is part of a talented Indian midfield which will also have Jeakson Singh, Givson Singh and Arjun Jayaraj in addition to experienced foreigners such as Vicente Gomez who has played against the top teams in La Liga.

The boy from Kerala can learn and grow at Kerala Blasters - which is why he recently signed a contract extension till 2025. And he will surely hope last season doesn't repeat itself as playing time is crucial for any player's development.

The Croatian Football Federation announced the positive test result for the Inter midfielder on Friday

Inter midfielder Marcelo Brozovic has tested positive for coronavirus while on international duty with Croatia

The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) announced Brozovic's Covid-19 result on Friday, along with a member of staff, and confirmed he is in self-isolation.

Additional testing took place prior to Saturday's Nations League clash with Sweden after Croatia defender Domagoj Vida returned a positive test in Istanbul on Wednesday.

"The test results showed two positive results, for the national team member Marcelo Brozovic and a staff member of the national team," a statement read.

"Both were immediately isolated from the other members of the national team. Inter were informed of the positive test."

Vida was informed of his positive test during the midweek showdown with Turkey.

In addition to Brozovic and Vida's diagnosis, Egyptian Football Association (EFA) confirmed that forward Mohamed Salah has tested positive for coronavirus after initial confusion over the Liverpool star's test result.

The EFA originally announced on Friday that Salah had tested positive before later deleting the statement and putting out a different announcement, saying three players from Egypt and their opponents on Saturday, Togo, tested positive and will have a second test before the match.

But a follow-up statement from the EFA later on Friday confirmed that Salah's second swab had also come back positive, meaning the 28-year-old will now be forced into self-isolation.

"Egyptian National Team and Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has undergone a second test, and the results have confirmed that Salah tested positive for Covid-19," an EFA statement said.

"All necessary medical precautions have been taken in line with the global medical protocol and under the supervision of Dr. Mohamed Sutan, Head of the Medical Committee at the EFA as well as Dr. Mohamed Abou El Ela, Egyptian National Team doctor.

"While the first swab offered a positive result, the Egyptian FA has decided to carry out a second test to confirm the result.

"Salah is keeping a high spirit and is not showing any symptoms of the virus. He has been isolated and the National Team's doctor is currently liaising with Dr. Jim Moxon, head of Liverpool FC's medical staff, regarding this matter."

It has also emerged that Saturday's friendly between South Korea and Mexico in Austria could be cancelled after four Korean players tested positive for the virus.

Ulsan Hyundai's Jo Hyeonwoo, Busan's Lee Dongjun, Frieburg's Kwon Changhoon and Kazan's Hwang Inbeom were the footballers who gave the positive result after a post-training check.

The rest of the Korean squad will now be subjected to tests prior to the match and if more infections are detected, the contest could be called off.

Brazil 1-0 Venezuela: Selecao stay perfect in World Cup qualifying thanks to Firmino

No Neymar, no worries for Brazil – who top the standings on the road to Qatar 2022 – following Friday's victory.

Brazil made it three wins from three games in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying after grinding out a 1-0 victory over Venezuela.

Brazil were frustrated by Venezuela in Sao Paulo, but Roberto Firmino's 67th-minute strike proved enough for the Selecao on Friday.

Firmino popped up with 23 minutes remaining in the absence of Neymar as Brazil stayed perfect to top the standings by two points ahead of rivals Argentina.

Back in action following last month's 4-2 win in Peru, Tite made four changes – some enforced – to his starting XI, with the unfit Neymar, Casemiro (coronavirus), Philippe Coutinho and Weverton dropping out and Gabriel Jesus, Allan, Everton Ribeiro and Ederson coming in.

Brazil – who drew 0-0 against Venezuela at last year's Copa America – found the back of the net inside seven minutes but the linesman raised his flag. Richarlison had scored after Renan Lodi's mishit shot was palmed into the path of the Everton forward.

The South American champions controlled possession, but had nothing to show for it, struggling to create clear-cut chances.

An unmarked Jesus was unable to turn the ball towards goal just past the half-hour mark, instead scuffing an effort to Richarlison, who could only steer his close-range effort wide of the post.

Venezuela were rarely threatening, though Yeferson Soteldo slalomed into the penalty area and slid a cross into the six-yard box but Marquinhos intervened at the last moment to clear the danger.

Brazil had the ball in the back of the net again prior to half-time however Douglas Luiz's effort was waived off for a foul on Venezuela goalkeeper Wuilker Farinez.

After a VAR review for handball was waived way nine minutes into the second half, Brazil finally broke Venezuela's resistance 13 minutes later when the ball was headed into the path of Firmino, who made no mistake from close range.

What does it mean? Brazil roll on

It was not perfect, nor was it pretty, but Brazil got the job done behind closed doors. Without Neymar due to a groin strain and key midfielder Casemiro, Brazil were missing star quality against a stubborn Venezuela side. Despite not creating many clear-cut opportunities, Brazil managed to extend their winning streak to four matches, while they are unbeaten in their last 20 World Cup qualifying fixtures.

Firmino with confidence-boosting goal

Much has been said about Firmino, especially amid Diogo Jota's remarkable run of form at Liverpool. But Firmino popped up when Brazil needed him most. It was his first goal in four matches and just his second since netting twice against Bolivia on October 9.

Brazil lack spark

While Brazil walked away with maximum points, it was far from convincing. Tite's men appeared sluggish, and predictable in attack against the impressive visitors – lacking creativity in the final third.

What's next?

Brazil are away to Uruguay in Montevideo on Tuesday, while Venezuela host Chile on the same day.

Goal takes a glimpse into the career of former Melbourne City FC winger Nick Fitzgerald...

Australian winger Nick Fitzgerald joined Jamshedpur FC as the club's Asian overseas player in this season of the Indian Super League (ISL).

The 28-year-old attacker has vast experience of playing in the Australian A-League since 2009 and has won the championship on two occasions.

In his first season at Brisbane Roar, the winger appeared in 12 league matches scoring one goal and had won his maiden A-League championship. Midway into the 2012-13 season, the player had mutually terminated his contract with Roar and returned to his boyhood club.

In the same season, Fitzgerald went on to win his second consecutive A-League title, this time with Central Coast Mariners. He appeared in nine league games for the club scoring one goal. He spent three more seasons with the Mariners before heading to Melbourne City FC in 2015 where he spent three seasons. At Melbourne City, he played a total of 63 league games scoring eight times. Adana Demirspor’s Akintola relishing Balotelli link-up vs Fenerbahce

83' Brazil have not been held to less than three goals in a win since a Copa America victory over Argentina in July 2019.

73' Richarlison is brought down by Gonzalez, giving Brazil a free-kick which they opt to take quickly.

71' Venezuela no longer have the luxury of being able to sit back and defend a point as they’ll be forced to come forward in search of an equaliser. That won’t be possible however until they win the ball back; a task that is becoming increasingly difficult.

69' As Tite calls for calm from the touchline after seeing his side go up a goal, Allan misplaces a pass and gives Venezuela a throw-in.

63' Play is stopped for Rosales, who is down on one knee in some pain. He looks unable to continue, which would mean Venezuela have been forced to withdraw both starting full-backs.

61' Richarlison sends a desperate cross into the penalty area which is easily repelled by Angel and put out for a throw, much to the disappointment of Tite.

59' Peseiro should be very pleased with his side’s performance after an hour. It was never likely that Venezuela would dominate play, but they’ve responded to what Brazil have thrown at them very well. Their shape has been maintained all night and are working determinedly for what would be an unexpected point.

56' Soteldo finds some room just inside the penalty area, but his cross is curled right into the outstretched arms of Ederson.

55' It appears the referee was being told about a potential handball inside Venezuela’s penalty area, which would give Brazil a penalty. After a replay or two, the replays appear to be inconclusive and the match will be restarted with a goal-kick.

52' Play is stopped because of a conversation between the referee and the VAR. It’s unsure what incident is being discussed, but both sets of players are getting increasingly frustrated.

50' Lodi again involved in good attacking play down the left as his near-post cross finds Jesus, who is unable to direct it towards Farinez. Again the Manchester City striker prods it towards his team-mate Richarlison, who is unable to get anything on it as the goalkeeper finally claims.

48' As expected, Tite has wasted no time making attacking changes as his side look to take the lead. Paqueta is not an orthodox central midfielder, but will no doubt give his side a burst of pace and creativity; something desperately missed in the first half.

46' Venezuela get the match restarted from the kick-off!

Brazil’s midfield weren’t the most creative in the first half, with Douglas Luiz miscuing a number of passes through the lines. If the Venezuelan defence is to be broken down, perhaps Tite will need to look for creativity from the bench. With Arthur and Paqueta available, as well as Vinicius from the bench to challenge tired legs, the quality at Tite’s disposal is undoubtable. For Venezuela, they will no doubt look to dig in and protect the draw at all costs, with the experience of Chancellor and Murillo options in the second half.

Venezuela were made to work hard in the first half, but deservingly enter the interval level at 0-0 with Brazil. Richarlison thought he had given his side the lead after just eight minutes, but an offside in the build-up would leave the match deadlocked. The hosts controlled play from there, camping 10 men inside the opposition’s half, but found little in the way of opportunities. The Selecao again thought they’d found the opener just two minutes from time, but a foul just before Douglas Luiz’s final effort saved Venezuela and allowed them to clear from a free-kick inside their own penalty area. It’s still all to play for in Sao Paulo after 45 minutes!

45' + 3' HALF-TIME: BRAZIL 0-0 VENEZUELA.

45' + 2' Danilo takes a speculative effort from some distance, but the full-back is unable to get any height on the shot as Farinez stoops low and saves easily.

45' The referee indicates three minutes will be added to the first half for stoppages.

43' Three of the last six meetings between Brazil and Venezuela have ended in 0-0 draws. The other three were won by the Selecao with an aggregate score of 9-2.

41' BRAZIL SCORE AGAIN BUT AGAIN IT’S RULED OFF! A cross from Everton Ribeiro finds its way to Richarlison after a bit of head tennis. The Everton forward turns it towards goal bringing a fantastic save out of Farinez, only for Douglas Luiz to hit the back of the net. Immediately after crossing the line however, the referee blows his whistle as there was a push in the back before the shot was taken.

39' Soteldo gives Venezuela their first real chance of the match, slaloming into the Brazil penalty area past Danilo and slipping a pass across the six-yard box for a team-mate, which is but behind at the last moment by Marquinhos.

37' Jesus goes over in the penalty area during an attempt to get under a long, lifted pass, but the referee sees nothing wrong with the defending and Farinez is able to catch the ball uncontested.

35' Douglas Luiz gets his signals crossed, missing the chance to send it long for Jesus’ run. Having already motioned to pass, the midfielder instead turns to play it down the left flank for Lodi - but sends it out for a throw-in.

33' BRAZIL CONSPIRE TO WASTE A GOLDEN CHANCE! A cross from the left falls to an unmarked Jesus, who is unable to turn the ball towards goal, instead sending a bouncing pass across the six-yard box to Richarlison. The oncoming Everton forward takes a stab at it, but he’s unable to find the open net - sending it just wide! It’s a head in hands moment for the attack, who continue to labour.

31' Rosales takes the free-kick from deep in midfield towards the edge of the 18, where Silva manages to nod it away. Rincon volleys the second-effort but sends it wildly over.

28' Allan finds Firmino outside the area, who takes a touch before lashing a shot towards goal - forcing Farinez to dive from side to side in order to palm the ball out for a corner.

26' Brazil come forward once again with 10 men inside the opposition’s half, but Everton Ribeiro and Douglas Luiz are facing some difficulty breaking down the low block.

24' Everton Ribeiro whips a corner to the edge of the six-yard box, but the organised Venezuela defence once again repels a set-piece successfully. They’ve done almost nothing going forward, but the visitors should be given credit for their resilience and discipline thus far.

22' Danilo takes the free-kick to the edge of the penalty area where it’s met with a deft flick to put it through traffic. The ball wriggles through to Firmino on the other side, but it prompts the linesman to raise his flag - giving Venezuela a free-kick to clear their lines.

16' Feltscher is in a bit of bother as he has a discussion with Venezuela’s medical staff. It seems to be a problem with his ankle as he’s helped off by two staff members. A change looks imminent for the visitors.

14' Everton Ribeiro uses his left to curl in a free-kick from the right after Richarlison was clumsily brought down, but the delivery to the far post prevents his team-mate from putting a shot on target.

12' Douglas Luiz looks to set Jesus away down the right, but the long-range pass is miscued and rolls out for a Farinez goal-kick.

10' A set-piece routine comes to nothing for Venezuela, who take their free-kick on the right short. Soteldo was the intended target inside the penalty area, but a heavy touch prevents anything from happening for the visitors.

8' RICHARLISON SCORES BUT HE’S OFFSIDE! Marquinhos sprays a pass forward to Lodi, whose mishit shot is palmed by Farinez into the path of the Everton striker, who puts it past the goalkeeper - but the left-back was unable to hold his run in the build-up. It remains 0-0.

6' A long, early cross is hung up to Rondon on the edge of the penalty area, but Marquinhos comes flying through to dispossess the physical striker.

4' Silva attacks a corner sent in by Everton Ribeiro, but his powerful effort is misdirected and sent wide.

3' Venezuela are looking to slow the play early, taking as long as possible with every throw-in. A point in Brazil for the visitors would be a tremendous result, though thinking about that this early in the proceedings could be risky.

1' Brazil get the match underway from the kick-off!

Venezuela make four changes of their own to the XI that lost 1-0 to Paraguay during the last international break. Osorio is in for Chancellor in defence, while the absence of Yangel Herrera from the squad allows Soteldo to start. On the wing, Cordova is replaced by Moreno, while a start at striker for Rondon puts Machis to the wing and leaves no room for Otero.

Brazil make four changes from their 4-2 victory over Peru last month. Ederson returns to goal replacing Weverton, while Allan and Everton RIbeiro are in for Casemiro and Philippe Coutinho in midfield. The final change is an enforced one in attack, as Neymar’s withdrawal from the squad due to injury means there’s a place for Jesus.

VENEZUELA SUBS: Alain Baroja, Joel Graterol, Jhon Chancellor, Luis Del Pino, Alexander Gonzalez, Bernaldo Manzano, Juanpi, Cristian Rivas, Jhon Murillo, Fernando Aristeguieta, Romulo Otero, Jefferson Savarino.

VENEZUELA XI (4-2-3-1): Wuilker Farinez; Roberto Rosales, Yordan Osorio, Wilker Angel, Rolf Feltscher; Yeferson Soteldo, Tomas Rincon; Darwin Machis, Christian Casseres, Junior Moreno; Salomon Rondon.

BRAZIL SUBS: Alisson, Weverton, Felipe, Diego Carlos, Alex Telles, Arthur, Bruno Guimaraes, Lucas Paqueta, Vinicius Junior, Everton, Pedro.

BRAZIL XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Danilo, Thiago Silva, Marquinhos, Renan Lodi; Douglas Luiz, Allan, Everton Ribeiro; Gabriel Jesus, Roberto Firmino, Richarlison.

With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let’s look at the team news, starting with the hosts!

Venezuela travel to Sao Paulo in search of their first goal in qualifying, as Jose Peseiro’s side sit one spot ahead of last-place Ecuador having played a match less. A 3-0 loss to Colombia and a 1-0 defeat at home to Paraguay have made for a rocky start, and it doesn’t get easier as the Vinotinto have only beaten Brazil once in 13 attempts - a 2-0 win in a friendly in 2008.

Brazil return to CONMEBOL qualification in a rich vein of form, sitting just one point behind table-toppers Argentina, who have played a match more. With 12 goals scored in their last three fixtures, the Selecao attack has been unstoppable of late -  but Neymar’s late withdrawal from the squad due to injury will leave Tite without Brazil’s second highest all-time goalscorer.

Good evening and welcome to our LIVE commentary of the CONMEBOL World Cup 2022 qualifier between Brazil and Venezuela!

Man Utd full-back Wan-Bissaka picks out ‘quite challenging’ Neymar as his toughest opponent

The Three Lions coach revealed concerns about the centre-half but has been pleased with his ability to bounce back

England boss Gareth Southgate has admitted to being worried about Harry Maguire's career after the Manchester United captain was sent off against Denmark – compounding a summer of misery.

Maguire looked distraught after being shown a first-half red card in the 1-0 defeat to the Danes at Wembley last month, with the defender also receiving serious criticism for his performances at the back for the Red Devils.

The 27-year-old's struggles came after he was found guilty of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and repeated attempts of bribery after an incident in Mykonos, Greece in August.

However, Maguire has slowly worked his way back to his best on the pitch, scoring in the 4-1 win against Newcastle, while also netting a header in England's recent 3-0 victory versus Republic of Ireland.

Southgate revealed he was delighted with Maguire's ability to bounce back from adversity, but admitted to worrying about the former Leicester City star's immediate future following the run of incidents.

"I was really pleased with Harry," Southgate said.

"I felt that the red card could bottom everything out. You could see on his face when he was walking off the pitch that night [against Denmark], how he was just having one of those spells where he must have felt everything was against him.

"I had some good conversations with him and I know his club would have supported him and his club performances were solid after that.

"Against Ireland I thought it was important to get him back in an England shirt. It was a lovely moment for him to captain the team and to get the goal as well is a real boost – so that was great to see."

England are currently preparing for two UEFA Nations League fixtures against Belgium (away) and Iceland (home).

The Three Lions are sitting in third place in Group 2, level on points with Denmark as both attempt to catch Belgium, who are two points further ahead.

Only the group winner progresses to the Nations League semi-finals, with England needing a win against the Belgians to put themselves in the box seat to qualify with a match against point-less Iceland to come.

While defeat to Belgium will see England unable to qualify, they will still have a faint hope of qualification for the semi-finals with a draw, but they will need to make up a significant goal difference in their final match versus Iceland and hope the Belgians lose to Denmark.

Chelsea winger Hudson-Odoi admits he's not yet at full strength after Achilles rupture in 2019

The Blues youngster has been back on the pitch for over a year, but the lingering affects of his previous injury remain

Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi says he is not yet fully recovered from an Achilles injury suffered more than 18 months ago.

The 20-year-old ruptured an Achilles tendon playing for the Blues against Burnley in April 2019.

He spent five months on the sidelines, returning to action in September of that year, but the winger believes he has not yet returned to peak condition.

Hudson-Odoi has made 42 appearances in all competitions since his comeback, though he has also struggled with a number of niggling injuries, including a hamstring problem that sidelined him for two months at the start of this year.

“I still feel to myself that I’m still improving, obviously still trying to get more strength in the calf, which I lost a lot of muscle from, but I feel like I’m getting back to my best,” he told BT Sport.

“Hopefully, sooner or later, I’ll be back to normal as I was before, but I just want to keep improving, keep working hard daily and keep getting better day-by-day.”

Hudson-Odoi was speaking after finding the back of the net for England U21s in their 3-1 Euro 2021 qualifying against Andorra on Friday evening.

The winger actually made his senior England debut before featuring for the Young Lions in March 2019, but has not featured for Gareth Southgate’s side for nearly a year.

Hudson-Odoi says he has no issue moving between the youth and senior England teams, though he has set himself target of establishing himself in Southgate’s squad in the near future.

“Of course you want to be in the senior team, you want to be competing up there every time. [But] No matter where I’m playing, I want to give my best no matter what it is,” he added.

“I want to try my best, give my hardest, work hard every day and hopefully get into the seniors.

"If it’s going up and down [between the two squads], I want to make sure that I stay up there, so I’m going to keep working hard, doing my best, and as I said, just keep my mentality strong and just keep working hard.”

Reflecting on the game, Hudson-Odoi admitted the Young Lions had a point to prove after being held to a 3-3 draw away at minnows Andorra last month.

“We went there, and we drew 3-3 which was unfortunate," he said. "We wanted to get the win. Every game we play you want to win no matter what it is, and it was unfortunate to [not] get the win there. So, we’ve come here today to try and prove a point that we needed to get the result.”

'I was £400,000 down' - Former Arsenal star Bendtner opens up on gambling addiction

The former Denmark striker has admitted that he needed a wake-up call to realise that he had a problem

Former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner has opened up on the gambling addiction that saw him go £400,000 down in a single night.

The former Denmark international admitted that during a period of injury problems when he was 23, he took to gambling in a bid to recreate the excitement he felt on the field.

Although he felt it was not a problem at the time, he admits that in hindsight it was an issue.

"At times it could seem like an addiction," he told the BBC. "I always felt I had it under control but that night was the sort of turning point for me. I knew this isn't the lifestyle I want.

"When I had a lot of injuries on the pitch, I couldn't find that excitement level of going on, playing in front of 60,000. There wasn't anything that lived up to that. The only time I could get that competitive feeling was going to the casino.

"The higher the stakes, the higher the adrenaline rush.

"I was £400,000 down but ended up winning quite a lot of it back and only ended up losing £20,000 on the night.

"It felt terrible but after I won it back I had a really hard think at the hotel when I got home and just knew that was the end of my big gambling nights.

"I didn't want to be just another guy who played football and lost all his money and didn't use his brain.

"It was important for me to go back to my roots and re-gather. Looking back now I'm happy that it happened as I may not have got that wake-up call."

He admits that at times he was immature in his approach to the game, such as when he squared off with Arsenal legend Thierry Henry.

"Henry tells me to shut up, this time with a lot of swear words included. And in hindsight it is good advice. But I am not taking it on. I shout back. He confronts me, yells into my face, says all kinds of things,” he wrote in his book.

"But that is not the end of it. After training Henry comes after me.

"After, he put his arm around me and said: 'Listen I need to explain a few things about how this works.' That gave me a lot of respect for the guy. I thought that was really big. For three months I didn't train with them [the first team] and that was my lesson. It showed me and I knew to shut it. It helped me a lot. I was 16 at this point.

"Looking back now I think you should just keep your head down and do what your elders tell you. I think that's one of the things that still should remain in football but I was just very competitive and I was just in that zone. You didn't obviously know how it all worked. It was all new so you had to learn. That was a big learning curve for me."

The Phobians and the Fire Boys will meet at a different time after Saturday's game was called off

The 2020-21 Ghana Premier League (GPL) opening game between Hearts of Oak and Aduana Stars on Saturday has been called off.

Although not mentioned a publication by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on its official website, the postponement has been necessitated by an incident of coronavirus in the camp of the Phobians.

The two teams were set to face off in a fixture at the Nana Agyeman Badu I Park in Dormaa, a game that was supposed to mark the return of top-flight football in Ghana for the first time since March, when the coronavirus pandemic disrupted the 2019-20 football season.

All other matchday one matches of the 2020-21 GPL season are set to go on as originally scheduled.

“Aduana Stars’ Ghana Premier League Match-day 1 clash against Hearts of Oak has been called off,” the GFA announced on Friday evening.

“This decision was taken after the GFA was informed that Players and Officials of Hearts of Oak will need further tests before playing a match.

“Further tests will be conducted by the Public Health services.

“The GPL match which was scheduled to be played at the Agyeman Badu Park I on Saturday November 14 is postponed till further notice.

“The GFA has taken steps to inform both teams and all other stakeholders.”

In the absence of the Hearts vs Aduana fixture, Berekum Chelsea’s away clash with Asamoah Gyan’s Legon Cities becomes the season opener.

Earlier this week, Hearts announced three of its members tested positive for coronavirus when the team underwent screening, as part of safety protocols for football’s return amid the Covid-19 conditions.

All team officials and players were tested as directed by the GFA regulations. All 18 GPL clubs underwent the test.

Latest reports indicate more new cases have been confirmed in the camp of the Phobians, leading to the postponement of Saturday’s fixture just day to showdown.

In a related news, Ebusua Dwarfs have received an all-clear to participate in the 2020-21 GPL after resolving a long-standing transfer dispute with lower division side Great Liverpool FC, which sought a Cape Coast High Court order for the Crabs’ expulsion from the elite league.

The 2026 World Cup: 48 teams, more groups, more venues, more games

The Super Eagles surrendered a four-goal lead to share the points with the Leone Stars at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium

Alex Iwobi has assured fans the Nigerian national team will do all it takes to put things right after they were held to a 4-4 draw by Sierra Leone on Friday.

The Super Eagles cruised to a 4-0 first-half lead before the Leone Stars fought from behind to share the points in Benin City in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying game.

Iwobi opened the scoring in the encounter with a fine finish from the edge of the box and then wrapped up his brace with another impressive strike.

Victor Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze found the back of the net before the half-time break to give the Super Eagles a comfortable lead.

The Leone Stars fought back to ensure the game ended in a draw, with Al-Hadji Kamara leading the comeback.

Disappointed with the showing, fans of the Super Eagles have taken to the social media to express their frustration.

Iwobi was also displeased with the outcome of the game but has promised his side will make amends in the return fixture scheduled for Tuesday.

“[I am] deeply disappointed, we’ll work to put things right,” Iwobi posted on Instagram.

Despite the draw, the three-time African champions maintain their lead in Group L with seven points from three games, following victories over the Republic of Benin and Lesotho in November 2019.

A win against Sierra Leone in Freetown could still be enough to see the Super Eagles secure an early ticket to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Nigeria finished third in the last edition of the continental tournament in Egypt behind champions Algeria and Senegal.

The 23-year-old is positive about his recovery as he begins the long road back to full fitness

Joe Gomez has pledged to come back “better and stronger than ever” as the Liverpool defender begins his recovery from knee surgery.

The 23-year-old went under the knife earlier this week after being forced to withdraw from the England squad with an injury suffered in training.

Liverpool say the operation was a success  but refuse to put a timescale on Gomez’s recovery, though he is expected to miss a large portion of the 2020-21 campaign.

It is the latest injury to have hampered the career of the former Charlton youngster, who was sidelined for a year after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury playing for England's Under-21 side in 2015.

An ankle problem that required surgery saw him miss the 2018 Champions League final and that summer’s World Cup. He also missed four months of the following campaign with a fractured leg.

Despite this latest disappointment Gomez is positive about his recovery and says his previous battles with injury stand him in good stead for his latest battle to return to fitness.

“The road to recovery has already begun,” he wrote on Twitter .

“I’ve been here before, I know what it takes and I’ll be back better and stronger than ever.

“I’m obviously gutted, but this is part of God’s plan and I believe everything happens for a reason.

“I’d like to thank everyone for their well wishes and messages of support. I’m focused on my recovery and supporting my team mates in every way I can. See you soon.”

Gomez’s absence leaves Liverpool desperately short of defensive options , with fellow centre-back Virgil van Dijk also expected to miss the majority of the campaign with a knee injury.

Midfielder Fabinho, who has regularly filled in as a central defender, is still recovering from a hamstring injury suffered against FC Midtjylland in the Champions League last month, leaving only Joel Matip and Nathaniel Phillips available as natural centre-back options for Reds manager Jurgen Klopp.

Full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold is also likely to be out until December with a calf problem sustained in last weekend’s Premier League draw at Manchester City.

Man Utd confirm surprising shirt number for Mason Mount

Two former Mamelodi Sundowns players were on the score sheet as Ntseki's side returned to winning ways after suffering a defeat to Zambia last month

South Africa were made to sweat for their 2-0 victory over Sao Tome and Principe in a 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday.

Percy Tau broke the deadlock a few minutes after the restart following a lacklustre first-half by Molefi Ntseki's side, and second-half substitute Bongani Zungu sealed the victory with a late goal.

Bafana Bafana were looking to record their second successive win in their qualifying campaign having defeated Sudan 1-0 in their last Group C match in November 2019.

Coach Molefi Ntseki adopted an offensive approach as he named attackers Lebogang Manyama, Themba Zwane, Keagan Dolly and Percy Tau in the starting line-up.

Meanwhile, the Falcons and True Parrots Team were hoping to record their maiden win in Group C after succumbing to a 1-0 defeat to Ghana in November 2019.

Ntseki's counterpart, Adriano Eusebio, named two out-and-out strikers in Harramiz Soares and Luis Leal in the starting line-up as the island country looked to secure a famous win over the 1996 African champions.

South Africa dominated the match from the start with their best chances falling for Manyama, who found himself in good positions inside the Sao Tome box.

However, the Kaizer Chiefs vice-captain placed two headers over the crossbar from close range as the home side searched for the opening goal.

The visitors had a rare opportunity following a quick move after Bafana had lost the all in midfield, but Soares hit the side-netting without troubling Ronwen Williams in the South Africa goal.

Although Bafana were controlling the match, they were indecisive in front of goal as they made too many touches which allowed the Falcons and True Parrots Team to recover and clear their lines.

Sao Tome keeper Aldair D'Almeida spilt the ball into the path of Tau, who tried to set-up Manyama, but the ball was intercepted and the visitors survived a scare.

The score as 0-0 at the interval following a first-half which saw South Africa dominate possession without seriously testing D'Almeida in the Sao Tome goal.

South Africa upped the tempo after the restart and they were awarded a penalty after the hosts' livewire Tau was fouled inside the box and the referee points directly to the penalty spot.

The Anderlecht forward then dusted himself down and clinically converted the penalty kick to make it 1-0 to South Africa 10 minutes into the second-half.

Ntseki then replaced Kamohelo Mokotjo with Bongani Zungu, who is able to get goals from midfield having been Bafana's top scorer at the 2019 Afcon finals in Egypt with two goals.

The Scotland-based midfielder made an impact on the game as he pulled the strings in midfield - combining well with his teammates with the hosts looking to double their lead.

Bafana got the goal they had been looking for in the 90th minute when Zungu headed home Dolly's corner-kick to seal South Africa's 2-0 victory over Sao Tome on the night.

Despite the win, South Africa remained second on the Group C standings, but they are now three points behind the leaders, Ghana, while Sao Tome remained fourth without a single point.

The two teams are set to meet again on Monday at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium where Sao Tome will officially be the home side.

The Taifa Stars remain at the foot of Group J after they were defeated 1-0 away in North Africa

Tanzania remain at the foot of Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Group J after Youssef Msakni’s penalty carried Tunisia to a narrow 1-0 victory in Rades on Friday.

Captain Msakni converted from the spot in the 18th minute after he was fouled in the box.

The victory extends Tunisia’s 100-percent record in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, and they could secure their place in Cameroon for the 2022 tournament if they defeat the Taifa Stars in East Africa on Monday.

Second-place in the group, Equatorial Guinea came from behind to defeat Libya 3-2 on Wednesday, scoring twice in second-half stoppage time to pick up their first points of the campaign.

After starting the qualifying campaign strongly back in November—with a 2-1 victory over Equatorial Guinea—Tanzania have failed to take any points in their subsequent two matches.

The Taifa Stars were hit by an injury to star striker Mbwana Samatta before the fixture after he picked up a problem while in action for club side Fenerbahce in the Turkish top flight.

He will also be absent for the return fixture between the two sides, with John Bocco and Simon Msvua instead charged with providing the goal threat for the visitors.

Without him, Tanzania nonetheless put up a resolute and disciplined showing, albeit conservative, with goalkeeper Aishi Manula called upon on several occasions to prevent the hosts from adding to their tally.

Tunisia were also without Nassim Hnid, who missed the match after testing positive for coronavirus ahead of the double-header.

Union leads Shield race after beating Red Bulls

The veteran defender is out of contract in the summer, but he claims reports that he is poised to be released are off the mark

Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng has admitted that he was “surprised” by reports that suggested he is ready to leave the club.

Reports in the local media suggested that FCB were ready to release the centre-back at the end of his deal in June and instead make a move for France centre-back Dayot Upemcano of RB Leipzig.

Boateng, though, has been taken aback by these claims.

“Nobody approached me, nobody spoke to me, I didn't know anything about it, I was surprised,” he told Suddeutsche Zeitung when asked to react to the news.

Indeed, the 32-year-old has expressed his interest in remaining at the Allianz Arena, where he has been based since joining the club from Manchester City in 2011.

Boateng has, indeed, been a mainstay of FCB for the best part of a decade, helping the club to win eight Bundesliga titles, five DFB Pokal and a couple of Champions League crowns.

He remains an integral part of Hansi Flick’s starting XI having featured in five of their six Bundesliga matches this term. He has, however, been relegated to the bench in two of their three Champions League fixtures.

Bayern’s defence faces a potentially significant overhaul in the summer. Versatile defender David Alaba is out of contract in June and is struggling to agree fresh terms with the Champions League winners, with a very public spat developing between the two parties in the media.

Boateng, meanwhile, is not involved in Germany’s Nations League matches over the course of the coming week, having been overlooked once again by head coach Joachim Low. He favours a younger side and the veteran defender could suffer a similar fate in his club side.

He had been capped 76 times by Germany and scored a single goal, which arrived in Euro 2016 in a 3-0 victory over Slovakia in the last-16 stage.

The highlight of his international career, however, was when he was involved in the team that launched a successful bid for the 2014 World Cup, defeating Argentine 1-0 in the final. During that competition, he notably played against brother Kevin-Prince’s Ghana side.

Goal has what you need to know about the new NWSL team spearheaded by Natalie Portman and a myriad of other high-profile celebrities

Fans of both soccer and pop culture have been getting a major thrill after news that Hollywood actress Natalie Portman is a co-owner of new Los Angeles-based NWSL expansion team Angel City FC.

Portman is joined by a slew of other major entertainment industry celebrities and sports figures as founding members and shareholders.

Goal brings you everything you need to know about Angel City FC including who they are owned by, when they will start playing, and more.

What is Angel City FC? Who owns Angel City FC? When will Angel City play in NWSL? Where is Angel City FC's stadium? Who plays for Angel City FC?

What is Angel City FC?

Angel City FC is a forthcoming NWSL (National Women's Soccer League) expansion team who are slated to begin playing in 2022.

The side, which was announced formally on July 21, 2020, will be based in Los Angeles, California.

The team was announced with a star-studded roster of high-profile female owners, with actress Natalie Portman acting as a co-founder and part-owner.

She joins the list of Angel City FC co-founders along with venture capitalist Kara Nortman, entrepreneur Julie Uhrman, and venture capitalist Alexis Ohanian.

“We wanted to make sure that we brought in incredible partners who were from the soccer world, who are leaders in sport, in tech and business and entertainment because that’s really so much what our city is about. Each of us has our special ability to bring to the team,” said Portman.

“It just seems like it was ideal to bring [women’s] soccer to L.A. because we have such passionate fans here, such robust youth soccer,” she added.

“It’s just an incredible kind of culture shift if we can bring more attention and light and celebration of these incredible athletes.”

Added Uhrman: “L.A. is a city that has a fanatical sports fan base. And obviously, we’ve shown that we have the ability to support multiple teams and multiple different leagues.

“By bringing together this unique group of people, we actually have this ability to engage and promote and not only support the best players, but also grow the league by putting a spotlight on it and hopefully igniting a fire here that will touch other places."

Who owns Angel City FC?

Portman, Nortman, Uhrman and Ohanian are the four co-founders of the club.

After Portman and Nortman met to discuss the possibility of purchasing a women's soccer team - the "Black Swan" actress is an avid fan of the sport - Nortman suggested that the actress reach out to her fellow Hollywood friends to watch a U.S. Women's National Team game in 2019.

Uzo Aduba, Jennifer Garner, Eva Longoria and Jessica Chastain accompanied Portman to the USWNT game, which got the ball rolling. Portman's interest in the sport eventually became a business venture after more conversations with Nortman, and the two forged a partnership to bring Angel City FC to life.

In addition to the likes of Aduba, Garner, Longoria and Chastain, other high-profile founding members (who are credited as founding investors on the official club website) of the side include former and current athletes like Serena Williams, Billie Jean King, Julie Foudy, Mia Hamm, Rachel Van Hollebeke, Shannon Boxx, Amanda Cromwell, Lorrie Fair, Ronnie Fair, Joy Fawcett, Angela Hucles, Shannon MacMillan, Tisha Venturini, Saskia Webber, Lauren Holiday, and Abby Wambach.

Other Hollywood names who serve as founding members are America Ferrera, Jennifer Garner, late-night host James Corden and YouTube stars Lilly Singh and Casey Neistat.

King said: "We need everyone to invest in women’s sports and [her partner] Ilana [Kloss] and I are proud to stand with the Angel City FC ownership group and help make new history in Southern California sports.

"Angel City's mission to make an impact on and off the field, and to provide an opportunity to some of the best professional female athletes in the world to play on a stage as powerful as Los Angeles, sends a strong message to young girls in the community and beyond.”

When will Angel City play in NWSL?

Angel City FC is expected to begin play in the spring of 2022.

Where is Angel City FC's stadium?

According to the LA Times, Angel City FC has been in discussions with LA Galaxy about being potential venue partners and are hopeful of an official announcement by the end of 2020.

LA Galaxy currently play at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

LA Galaxy previously shared both an owner and stadium with the Los Angeles Sol, Southern California's last first-division women's team.

Sol ceased play after just one season in 2010.

Who plays for Angel City FC?

With Angel City FC not expected to take to the pitch until 2022, official news of players isn't expected to surface until 2021.

But with Angel City FC's lucrative financial backing and destination, expect some interesting names to be included in the mix of potential players.
