Tom Edwards nearing New York Red Bulls return

South Korea led 1-0 at half-time but Mexico produced a rapid treble as they ran out deserved winners in Saturday's friendly.

Mexico spectacularly turned around a half-time deficit as they scored three goals inside four minutes to record a 3-2 victory over South Korea in Austria

Hwang Ui-jo opened the scoring when he scuffed in a volley from Son Heung-min's cross for South Korea, who only had 19 players available for the friendly fixture following further positive COVID-19 cases within coach Paulo Bento's squad.

Mexico managed 12 shots in the first half but their frustrations were over when they produced a sensational treble to seize command of the contest at Stadion Wiener Neustadt.

Raul Jimenez turned in a low cross to equalise, while a depleted South Korea were stunned again within a minute when Uriel Antuna provided the finish to fellow substitute Orbelin Pineda's throughball.

Carlos Salcedo then made it 3-1 in the 70th minute with a crisp, half-volleyed finish and while Kwon Kyung-won pulled a goal back late on, Mexico were deserved winners in the end.

Gerardo Martino's side are back in action again on Tuesday, taking on Japan in Graz. South Korea, meanwhile, go up against Qatar, also on Austrian soil.

De Bruyne hits back at Keane for calling Man City team-mate Walker an 'idiot'

The Belgian believes his club's full-back is one of their more consistent players and deserves praise, not criticism

Kevin De Bruyne has come to the defence of Kyle Walker after Roy Keane had labelled the Manchester City right-back "an idiot".

Those remarks came after Walker gave away a penalty in a recent 1-1 draw against Liverpool in the Premier League with Keane revealing his long-held belief that the defender is far too prone to major errors

The 30-year-old recently reached a century of games for Pep Guardiola's side since leaving Tottenham in 2017 and Walker's Belgium team-mate has now hit back at Keane's claims.

"I think from the moment that Kyle came to the team, he's been one of the most consistent performers with us," De Bruyne said.

"He's never injured, he plays all the time. He's reliable and he's a really good defender. I think the job that he does is a really good job.

"Obviously when you compare every position it's different. You can't compare the work that Kyle does to, for instance, Trent [Alexander-Arnold] at Liverpool. Trent is the more offensive player and Kyle has to play a different role for us, but he does it really well and there's a reason why he's playing all these years at this level for all these teams. It means he's been really good.

"Okay, what Roy Keane says...he's a different man and everybody knows that. But, okay, it's his opinion and he'll take it on the chin. He's going to be fine with it."

England manager Gareth Southgate has also recently defended Walker from Keane's comments which he believed crossed a line.

"I think he’s playing extremely well. Observations and analysis are fine, I think personal criticism less so, I think we have to be careful about that," Southgate said of the criticism.

”I’m very happy with what Walker is doing. He’s playing every game for his club because the manager trusts him and feels he needs him so if he’s doing that for Pep it’s an indication of the quality."

Walker wasn't included in the match-day squad for England's recent 3-0 win over Republic of Ireland with the Three Lions next set to face Belgium in the Nations League on Sunday.

Deschamps proud to see France players overcome difficult club situations to reach Nations League finals

N'Golo Kante sent Les Bleus into the semi-finals of the competition at a time when several stars are struggling for form

France coach Didier Deschamps paid tribute to his charges on Saturday after Les Bleus squeezed past Portugal to book a place in the UEFA Nations League finals.

The reigning World Cup holders came into the international break in far from perfect shape due to the struggles several key players have been facing in the club game.

Paul Pogba, Antoine Griezmann and Raphael Varane are among the France stars who have endured a muted start to the 2020-21 season, while Deschamps' plans were further interrupted by the withdrawal of Kylian Mbappe after the Paris Saint-Germain striker failed to recover from injury in time for Saturday's game.

Earlier in the week, Deschamps had admitted that Pogba's struggles at Man Utd have "mentally impacted" him.

Les Bleus nevertheless came through to down inaugural Nations League champions Portugal and make it through to the semi-finals with a game to spare, with N'Golo Kante's goal sealing a tense 1-0 victory in Lisbon.

And Deschamps was delighted to see how his men overcame their club strife to come through for their country.

"It’s great to see the players like that, to come out and win here. This victory is deserved, with a lot of solidarity, also of quality," the coach explained to TF1 after the final whistle.

"We achieved our goal, we wanted to finish first. Whatever happens in the last game, we'll stay first. It’s good to reach our goals, I’m very proud of the players.

"It's not always easy, especially during these complicated times. Some have club situations which are not the best. But when they meet here, there is still that competitive spirit and tonight they have proven that the France team is still a great team.

"Taking into account the quality of the opponent, obviously this is a benchmark match. I'm not talking about the one we played three days ago against Finland but in a game like today there is less need to warn them about the goal. They prefer to play these matches but the group is there and present. They have proven that the state of mind is still there."

Varane added to TF1: "We are happy with the victory and the way [we played]. We had the right spirit of solidarity. We could have scored in the first half. We had chances but we were solid and united because they were dangerous in the air. They managed to put danger in front of the goal but we responded.

"The final four was the goal from the start. We wanted to win to ensure qualification, but above all with style. We are really satisfied tonight. This is our benchmark game over the past few months, we have seen everything, good things, good combinations, good defense all together.

"We will be able to rely on this to project ourselves towards the next objective."

France close out their group commitments on Tuesday at home to Sweden, who need to at least equal Croatia's result against Portugal to avoid relegation from the Nations League top tier.

'I know Chelsea are watching me' - Gallagher happy with progression through West Brom and England U21 role

The Blues youngster is developing for the first time in the Premier League and is impressing in the Three Lions youth setup

Conor Gallagher has spoken about his development as he takes an increasingly prominent role with England's Under-21 side after making the loan move from Chelsea to West Brom this summer.

Gallagher is taking in his first Premier League action after making his senior football breakthrough in the Championship last season across moves to both Charlton Athletic and Swansea City.

Having narrowly missed out on promotion with the South Wales club, the 20-year-old opted to move to the Baggies on a season-long loan after Frank Lampard recommended the club to the homegrown star.

Gallagher, who played in a 3-1 win for England's U21s over Andorra on Friday night, spoke about his continued development in his bid to come back to Stamford Bridge.

"I will always give 100 per cent, no matter what. Whether it is West Brom or Chelsea, I will always give my best for the team," Gallagher said after the match at Molineux Stadium.

"I am just happy to be playing in the Premier League. I am very happy at West Brom and excited to play in more games. I have started well at West Brom even though results haven't gone our way, so I just need to keep that going and stay consistent. Hopefully, the results there will then improve."

The Blues starlet was then asked whether Lampard is keeping tabs on his development: "I believe so, as people know he is a great manager even though I am not at the club. I know the guys are watching and hoping I do well."

Friday's match was only Gallagher's fifth cap for the Three Lions at the U21 level but he now looks well-placed to start at the Under-21 European Championships in the summer.

Gallagher knows that performances at this level are being watched by senior manager Gareth Southgate, having seen the likes of Reece James, Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden make the step up in recent months.

"It gives every young English player hope," he continued. "[England U21 coach] Aidy [Boothroyd] said it has been 22 players in the last four years that have gone from the 21s to the seniors which is a very high number.

"So yes, to see boys like Jude go up into the seniors is great to see and it shows we are doing a good job here and gives hope. The amount of young English talent around the country is amazing.

"We have 17-year-olds to 21-year-olds in our squad and there's a lot of competition but it is all healthy. When someone wears the shirt, they have to take their chance."

England's U21s have already qualified for the Euros this summer but they have a final match of their group against Albania on Tuesday night. Upon his return, Gallagher's West Brom have an away trip to Manchester United next Saturday.

Lepasa strikes again but South Africa U23 suffer late heartbreak in Saudi Arabia

Gernot Rohr's men gave up a four-goal lead in Benin to share the spoils with the Leone Stars in Friday's game

The President of the Nigeria Federation Football (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, called a meeting with the Super Eagles technical crew on Saturday morning after the disappointing 4-4 draw with Sierra Leone.

The three-time African champions surrendered a four-goal lead against their West African neighbours in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Friday.

Alex Iwobi’s brace and goals from Samuel Chukwueze and Victor Osimhen gave Nigeria a comfortable lead in the opening 45 minutes but the Leone Stars came from behind after the restart to secure a point in Benin.

The result led to an outcry from football enthusiasts across the country but Pinnick, in his reaction, urged the Super Eagles to get over the draw and aim for an improved performance at the National Stadium in Freetown, on Tuesday.

Nigeria who sit atop of Group L with seven points after three matches, visit Sierra Leone on Tuesday for the reverse fixture of Friday’s clash.

Before departing Benin for Freetown, the Super Eagles technical crew had a meeting with the NFF management to discuss Friday’s result but the conclusion is yet to be made public.

“President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Mr Amaju Melvin Pinnick charged the players to put the disappointment behind them and be ready to give their all and redeem their image in Freetown on Tuesday,” the NFF announced.

“NFF President Pinnick has also summoned a meeting with the technical crew of the team for Saturday morning.”

Nigeria are aiming to make their 19th appearance in the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon 2022, after they won bronze in Egypt last year.

Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa also issued an apology on the behalf of the team and assured Nigerians that they will make it up in Freetown.

AFC Asian Cup 2023 qualifier: Player ratings as India beat Afghanistan 2-1

The attacker has tested positive for Covid-19 while on international duty and is feeling some of its effects

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah is suffering from "mild" Covid-19 symptoms, Egypt's team doctor Mohamed Abou Elela has confirmed.

Salah returned a positive test on Friday, ruling him out of his nation's Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Togo on Saturday - which Egypt managed to win 1-0.

While a number of Premier League stars have tested positive for the coronavirus, the majority have been asymptomatic, with Salah unfortunately dealing with some minor symptoms of the illness.

“He’s a mild case - he doesn’t have severe symptoms,” Abou Elela told the Associated Press. “He has to self-isolate in Egypt until his test returns negative and then, of course, he can travel back.

“The concerns from the Egyptian authorities are because Mo for Egypt is special. Everyone here wants to help and ... to do whatever the whole country can do."

Asked if Salah likely caught the virus while attending his brother's wedding in Cairo earlier that week, Abou Elela added: “I cannot deny. No one knows because ... unfortunately, we still don’t know everything about the virus. My answer is maybe yes, maybe no."

Egypt has had over 110,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19 to date and suffered over 6000 deaths. The United Kingdom has, however, fared much worse with over 1,300,000 cases and 51,000 deaths.

Salah's recent attendance at his brother's wedding had come under scrutiny with images shared online suggesting he broke coronavirus guidelines, but local mayor Maher Shtayyeh has leapt to the Liverpool star's defence

"All what has been said is false, it does not make sense to hug someone five times in the same wedding,” Shtayyeh told Goal.

“Also Salah was extremely cautious during the one-hour wedding, he never took his mask off except for taking photographs. Salah is fine now, he does not show any symptoms, I talked to his father and uncle.

“Trezeguet was the only player who came to the wedding with Salah, he was also extremely cautious."

Egypt next face Togo again on Tuesday with the side currently on a five-match unbeaten run and top of their Africa Cup of Nations qualification group.

Salah must now spend the next week in self-isolation and will likely miss Liverpool's next Premier League match against Leicester City on November 22.

Switzerland 1-1 Spain: Gerard Moreno rescues late draw after Ramos' double penalty miss

Spain rescued a late 1-1 draw in Saturday's Nations League clash with Switzerland in a match that saw Sergio Ramos have two penalties saved.

Sergio Ramos missed two second-half penalties on his record-breaking appearance for Spain but Gerard Moreno rescued the visitors a late 1-1 draw against 10-man Switzerland in Saturday's dramatic Nations League clash.

The captain, who earlier blocked a shot on the line, was twice foiled from the spot by Yann Sommer on his 177th international appearance, which saw him become the most-capped European male player.

Ramos' misses on his big night appeared as though it would cost Spain dear as Remo Freuler's 26th-minute half-volley put Switzerland on course for a first Group A4 victory.

But the hosts, who lost Nico Elvedi to a red card for his part in the second penalty at St. Jakob-Park in Basel, were denied in the last minute as Gerard spared Ramos' blushes and prevented Spain from falling to successive defeats in the competition.

Unai Simon was surprisingly selected in goal for Spain - the only player to retain his place from the 1-1 friendly draw with the Netherlands - and he was equal to Xherdan Shaqiri's shot from a tight angle 19 minutes in.

But Switzerland, who held Germany to a 3-3 draw last time out, did not have to wait much longer to make the breakthrough as Freuler sent Breel Embolo's cross spinning away from Simon with an impressive first-time finish.

That made it three games in a row Spain have conceded, having kept a clean sheet in the previous three, but they should have been level before half-time - Sommer keeping out Fabian Ruiz and Mikel Oyarzabal before Ferran Torres missed a sitter.

Ramos was right in the thick of the action in the second half, denying Haris Seferovic with a block on the line after Simon was left stranded a long way from goal, 92 seconds before heading the ball against Ricardo Rodriguez's arm to win a penalty.

The Spain skipper attempted to pick out the bottom-left corner but Sommer guessed the right way to push the ball past the post.

He had a chance to redeem himself when Elvedi slid in on substitute Alvaro Morata to give away another penalty, earning a second yellow in the process, but Ramos' tame attempt was a simple one for Sommer to keep out.

There was to be one more late twist, though, as Gerard met Sergio Reguilon's cross and fired past Sommer eight minutes after being brought off the bench to salvage a point for Spain.

What does it mean? Spain relinquish control of top spot

Keeping out the opposition has become an issue for Spain but scoring at the other end is arguably a bigger problem, having now netted only three goals in their last five matches.

Luis Enrique does not want to be judged until after next year's rearranged Euro 2020 finals but he fast needs to find a resolution to his side's lack of cutting edge, having managed a whopping 20 efforts against Switzerland but converting just one of them.

With one point from their last two Group A4 matches, Spain are now a point behind Germany - 3-1 winners over Ukraine in Leipzig on Saturday - ahead of the final-game shoot-out between the sides in Madrid on Tuesday.

Sergi-woe Ramos

It seemed almost destined that Ramos would steal the headlines for Spain on the day he overtook Italy great Gianluigi Buffon as European football's most capped footballer.

In many ways he still managed to do exactly that for the wrong reasons as he twice failed to beat Sommer, who became only the second goalkeeper to save a Ramos penalty after Croatia's Danijel Subasic in June 2016.

Reguilon to the rescue

Gerard scored with one of only four touches of the ball after being brought on as a late substitute - his fourth goal for Spain, all of them coming in the month of November (three in 2019 and one in 2020).

He was served the goal on a plate by left-back Reguilon, who had more touches (113) than any player on the field and also chipped in with two clearances, which no Spain player could match.

What's next?

Spain now know they have to beat Germany in Seville on Tuesday to finish top of Group A4 and qualify for next year's finals. As for Switzerland, they trail next opponents Ukraine by three points in the battle to avoid relegation.

The best Scandinavian footballers in Premier League history - ranked

Timo Werner scored twice as Germany saw off Ukraine 3-1 to set up a crucial Nations League meeting with Spain on Tuesday.

Germany put themselves in pole position in Nations League Group A4 heading into a crunch clash with Spain as Joachim Low's side came from behind to beat Ukraine 3-1.

Timo Werner scored either side of half-time following Leroy Sane's equaliser as Leon Goretzka turned in a dominant midfield display in Leipzig.

It was far from plain sailing for Germany on Saturday, however, with Andriy Shevchenko's depleted Ukraine side – who hit the post three times – taking a 12th-minute lead.

Goretzka set up two goals in the space of 10 minutes to give Germany the advantage by the interval and while defensive solidity evaded the hosts, Werner's second wrapped up the points.

One of four players to keep his place in Germany's starting XI, Philipp Max created two chances inside the opening five minutes, with Goretzka and Robin Koch failing to hit the target.

Yet Max was partly at fault as, against the run of play, Ukraine took the lead – the PSV defender's weak challenge enabling Oleksandr Zubkov to squeeze the ball back for Roman Yaremchuk to lash home.

Ukraine's lead lasted just 11 minutes, Goretzka robbing Oleksandr Zinchenko of possession before setting up Bayern Munich team-mate Sane, who arrowed a left-footed strike across Andriy Pyatov.

Goretzka had his second assist in the 33rd minute, crossing for Werner to head in from close range after getting on the end of Koch's delightful pass.

Ukraine were inches away from equalising early in the second half, as Zinchenko's deflected effort hit the upright.

Sane then sent a tame finish straight at Pyatov, but – after having a hopeful penalty appeal for handball dismissed – Germany had their third in the 64th minute.

Ilkay Gundogan fed Matthias Ginter, whose cross was swept home by Werner via a deflection. Marlos and Moraes did strike the woodwork at the other end, but the visitors failed to muster a comeback.

What does it mean? Germany and Spain set for decider

With Spain drawing 1-1 in Switzerland, Germany top the table heading into a showdown with Luis Enrique's team in Seville.

Germany – who amassed 20 shots against a Ukraine side shorn of several key players due to injuries and positive coronavirus test results – only need to avoid defeat to progress to next year's Nations League finals at the expense of their next opponents.

Goretzka runs the show

Goretzka has developed into one of the finest box-to-box midfielders in Europe and was at his scintillating best here, registering two assists and a game-high five attempts.

His only disappointment will come with not getting himself on the scoresheet, the 25-year-old heading a great chance at Pyatov in the closing stages.

Defensive issues will worry Low

While Germany's attack purred into life, their defence is still very much a work in progress.

Ukraine only managed six attempts, but had their luck been different the three which struck the woodwork could easily have seen Low's side slip to a defeat.

What's next?

Estadio La Cartuja hosts Germany's crucial match with Spain on Tuesday, while third-placed Ukraine face Switzerland in Lucerne.

Kariobangi Sharks 0-2 AFC Leopards: Rupia, Owiti on target for Ingwe at Kasarani

Portugal will not defend their Nations League title after missing out on a Finals place due to Saturday's defeat at home to France.

France booked their place in the Nations League Finals at the expense of holders Portugal as N'Golo Kante's second international goal secured a 1-0 win in Lisbon.

The World Cup winners and the European champions came into Saturday's match tied on 10 points at the top of Group A3 through four matches, but the head-to-head primary tie-breaker made this clash pivotal after a goalless draw in France.

Kante's strike proved the difference as the Chelsea midfielder stepped up in the 53rd minute after the plethora of attacking talent at both ends had misfired.

France were without Kylian Mbappe due to a hamstring injury, but Anthony Martial might have had a first-half hat-trick and would have been relieved to see Kante come to his aid.

The first miss from the Manchester United forward came as he ran onto Antoine Griezmann's incisive pass but was quickly confronted by Rui Patricio, who had earlier saved comfortably from Kingsley Coman and this time blocked bravely.

France remained on top and Martial should have scored as he turned Adrien Rabiot's wayward acrobatic effort onto the crossbar from four yards, before Patricio made another sublime stop from a close-range attempt.

Fortunately for the visitors, Cristiano Ronaldo was similarly wasteful with a header over the top on the stroke of half-time.

It was Ronaldo's failing which would prove costly following the restart as Patricio spilled Rabiot's low shot and the unlikely figure of Kante pounced to prod into the net.

Jose Fonte directed an unmarked header onto the post as Portugal threatened a response, but that was as close as they came.

Ronaldo was unable to forge a first career goal against France to rescue his side, although he teed up Joao Moutinho for a powerful blast that drew an outstanding save from Hugo Lloris.

What does it mean? Revenge at last

France have won the World Cup since losing the Euro 2016 final on home soil, but they had not beaten conquerors Portugal since that painful occasion.

Deservedly dumping Fernando Santos' side out of a tournament they won last time out would have been particularly satisfying – especially without Mbappe.

It will be Portugal's turn to seek a response as the teams meet once again in Group F at Euro 2020.

Griezmann the creator

In Mbappe's absence, many might have expected Griezmann to step up as France's chief goal threat. Instead, he was their creator.

The Barcelona forward had just one shot, which missed the target, but played three key passes. His gorgeous ball to Martial after 12 minutes deserved a better finish.

Patricio pays price

Although Portugal came into the match later in the second half – finishing with 18 attempts – they were outplayed before the break and relied on Patricio to come to their rescue time and again.

The Wolves goalkeeper made six saves but should have dealt with Rabiot's shot better, instead committing a costly error.

What's next?

France play Sweden and Portugal visit Croatia in the final round of Nations League group games on Tuesday, but the results are now largely academic.

Asamoah Gyan's Legon Cities held by Berekum Chelsea in Ghana Premier League opener

The Royals settled for a draw in the matchday one fixture at the Accra Sports Stadium

Legon Cities new signing Asamoah Gyan watched from the sidelines as his side and Berekum Chelsea played out a 1-1 draw in the opening game of the 2020-21 Ghana Premier League (GPL) on Saturday.

Signed on local Transfer Deadline Day in September, the Ghana legend was declared not match-fit ahead of the matchweek one tie, having only returned to the pitch after a long absence.

He was out of action since parting ways with Indian Super League outfit NorthEast United in January.

In the end, two first-half goals saw Legon and Chelsea share the spoils at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Captain Stephen Amankona scored the opener for visiting Chelsea in the 22nd minute, converting from the spot after Kofi Owusu was fouled in the box.

In the 34th minute, Legon skipper Jonah Attuquaye restored parity for the hosts, also finding the back of the net from a penalty.

"Asamoah Gyan is one experienced player and he’s still got some problems with injury," Legon Cities head coach Goran Barjaktarevic said ahead of Saturday's season opener.

We are working to get him fit because it is very important when he comes back, he comes back in good shape."

While Gyan was not on the pitch on Saturday, he still played a key role for The Royals from the sidelines.

The former Sunderland, Udinese and Rennes striker was captured by television cameras on multiple times hurling out instructions to his teammates from the sidelines.

It is unclear if he will play any part in the club's next game, an away tie against Great Olympics in what will be a local derby in Accra.

The 34-year-old has made a return to the Ghana Premier League for the first time since 2003 when he left Liberty Professionals for Udinese.

He is currently Ghana's all-time top scorer and most capped player, having netted 51 goals in 109 internationals for the Black Stars.

The Legon versus Chelsea clash was originally set to follow a clash between Hearts of Oak and Aduana Stars but the fixture was called off on Friday evening over confirmed cases of coronavirus infections within the camp of the former side.

Lepasa strikes again but South Africa U23 suffer late heartbreak in Saudi Arabia

Orlando Pirates marksman Zakhele Lepasa continued his recent scoring form by netting the opening goal in a friendly match

The South Africa Under-23 side went down 3-2 to Saudi Arabia in friendly match played at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah on Saturday evening.

Orlando Pirates striker Zakhele Lepasa, as well as Cape Town City forward Fagrie Lakay, were on target for David Notoane's team.

The match was the first of two friendlies between the countries with the next fixture set to take place on Tuesday. The games are being used as part of the South Africa Under-23 team's preparations for the Olympic Games in Tokyo. The Games were postponed this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic and will now take place in July and August, 2021.

In Saturday night's friendly, the visitors got themselves off to a good start by taking the lead in the 42nd minute when Lepasa, recently on target for Pirates in the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs, finished clinically from a great ball into the box by Lakay.

But the lead was shortlived as the Saudis equalised just before the half-time whistle through Ayman Alkhulaif.

The hosts had the opportunity to go in front shortly after the restart when they were awarded a penalty. But Golden Arrows goalkeeper Sifiso Mulungwana came to his country's rescue by keeping out Khalifa Aldawsari’s spot-kick.

However, when Saudi Arabia were awarded yet another penalty, this time in the 87th minute, Nasser Oloran had the beating of Mulungwana.

The late drama was far from over as Lakay added to his assist with a neat finish from a tight angle just before 90 minutes to put South Africa on even terms at 2-2.

But it wasn't to be their night as Ramzi Holan scored an injury-time winner.

South Africa are one of three African sides which qualified for the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. The others are Ivory Coast and Egypt. In the Women’s competition, Zambia will be Africa’s sole representative at the Games.

The draw for the Olympic football fixtures will take place on April 8, 2021.

Benin Republic edge closer to Afcon qualification after defeating Lesotho

The Squirrels brightened their chances of qualifying for Cameroon 2022 thanks to Saturday’s win over the Crocodiles

Benin Republic closed in on 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualification as they won 1-0 against Lesotho at the Stade Charles de Gaulle.

Jodel Dossou’s 24th minute effort thanks to an assist from Khaled Adenon was all Michel Dussuyer’s men needed to secure all maximum points at stake against Thabo Senong’s Crocodiles.

Having crumbled 4-2 at home versus Nigeria their last time out, the Southern African country went to Porto-Novo with the ambition of reviving their fading Afcon hopes, but the hosts had a different idea.

A second successive win for Benin Republic leave them in Group L’s second spot with five points – a point below Gernot Rohr’s Super Eagles and four points above Sierra Leone who are ranked third with two points.

Lesotho sit at the base of that zone after picking up just one point from three outings.

Dussuyer will lead his team to Maseru’s Setsoto Stadium for the return leg on Tuesday, and victory will see them place one leg in Cameroon regardless of the outcome between Sierra Leone and Nigeria in Freetown.

Since their maiden appearance at the 2004 edition staged in Tunisia, Benin have appeared four times at the biennial African football showpiece.

Their last appearance at Egypt 2019 saw them crash out in the quarter final – losing to eventual runners-up Senegal after a 1-0 loss. The Squirrels’ biggest highlight in that outing saw them defeat pre-tournament favourites Morocco on penalties after scores stood 1-1 after extra time.

Record-breaking Ramos overtakes Buffon as 177th Spain appearance makes him Europe’s most-capped player

The Real Madrid defender remains an important figure for La Roja at 34 years of age and now boasts another entry in the history books

Sergio Ramos has overtaken Gianluigi Buffon to become the most-capped player in European football, with the Real Madrid defender reaching 177 outings for Spain.

The World Cup winner hit that mark when he started Saturday's UEFA Nations League clash with Switzerland.

Despite now being 34 years of age, the Blancos skipper remains a talismanic presence for club and country.

He now boasts another entry in the history books, with the evergreen centre-half showing no sign of slowing down.

A debut for Spain was taken in back in 2005 while he was still on the books at Sevilla.

He was aged just 18 years and 361 days at the time, becoming the youngest player to debut for his nation in 55 years.

A regular role was nailed down from that point, allowing Ramos to form part of a remarkable era of success for La Roja.

Forming a productive partnership with Barcelona stars Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol, initially at right-back, Spain would go on to claim two European Championships and a World Cup win between 2008 and 2012.

Ramos has continued to be a key figure since then, with his efforts at club level ensuring that he is still in contention for call-ups.

His stunning strike rate for Real Madrid has taken him past 100 goals at club level, while 23 have been recorded for Spain.

There is the promise of plenty more to come, with it possible that he could remain part of the international scene for several seasons to come.

For now, though, he can bask in the knowledge that no player in the history of European football has won as many caps.

Buffon is another World Cup winner whose longevity allowed him to remain at the top for over 20 years.

The legendary goalkeeper, who is still on the books at Juventus at 42 years of age, took in 176 outings for Italy.

Ramos has now passed him on that appearance list and drawn level with Mexico icon Claudio Sanchez.

Only four men can claim to have represented their respective nations on more occasions, and many of them are about to be chased down.

Mohamed Al-Deayea and Bader Al-Mutawa of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait both have 178 caps to their name.

Ramos would equal them if he were to figure for Spain in a meeting with Germany on Tuesday.

A waiting game would then be required before trying to match Ahmed Mubarak’s 179 appearances for Oman.

Ramos should expect to emulate that achievement, before going on to close in on Egypt legend Ahmed Hassan and his 184 caps at the very top of the global chart.

LIVE: Switzerland vs Spain

Spain are sorely lacking in a clinical edge this evening. Switzerland had solid spell of play and capitalised through Freuler. La Roja have had moments, but Ferran Torres along with his team-mates in the final third have spurned openings. Luis Enrique needs to see more from his team in the second half.

Switzerland are on their way to securing a vital win in the Nations League, leading Spain 1-0 at the break at St Jakok-Park. Remo Freuler put them ahead with a fine left-footed strike from Breel Embolo's cross. La Roja almost hit back through Mikel Oyarzabal and Mikel Merino before the interval, but neither could find the back of the net.

45' + 1' HALF-TIME: SWITZERLAND 1-0 SPAIN

45' + 1' OVER! Merino spurns a golden opening before the break. He latches on to a flick on from Pau Torres at the back post from Olmo's corner. Merino sticks out a boot, but can only send his effort over the top with the goal gaping.

45' SAVE! Sommer beats away a strike from Oyarzabal from the edge of the box. Merino slides a pass to the forward, and he pulls the trigger, squeezing his shot through a crowded penalty area. However, the Switzerland keeper is alert and makes the stop.

44' Ferran Torres' difficult half continues. He surges into space down the right flank and has team-mates in the box. However, he picks out Shaqiri with his cutback to waste a promising opening.

42' Busquets is back on the field, which will be relief for Enrique and Barcelona fans watching.

41' Ebolo draws a foul from Busquets, but the Spain midfielder comes off worst in the challenge. A concern for Enrique and Rodri is sent out to warm up.

40' Ruiz rolls the ball towards Ferran Torres in the right inside channel. The forward tries to blast his strike through the wall of red shirts in the box, but Elvedi is well placed to make the block.

38' SAVE! Ruiz weaves his way through the Switzerland midfield and lines up a strike from the edge of the box. He curls a left-footed effort towards goal, but Sommer gets down to push it away from danger.

36' Switzerland are in a decent spot in their game management. Petkovic's men can afford to sit back and use their pace on the break. Embolo has already been very effective in space.

34' BLOCK! Ferran Torres forces a low cross towards the near post from the right flank. Olnmo gets ahead of Elvedi, but the defender sticks with the forward and blocks his attempted strike at goal.

32' Reguilon and Oyarzabal combine down the left flank, but the low cross from the latter is gathered with ease by Sommer.

31' Spain have lost their way out on the pitch. They're not playing with the fluency that they displayed in the early stages of the contest.

29' Shaqiri tries to be too clever from the resulting corner trying to catch out Simon at his near post. He succeeds in only clipping his cross into the side-netting.

29' SAVE! Rodriguez lines up the strike and he whips his effort with power towards goal. It's straight at Simon, but the keeper has to tip it over the bar.

28' Xhaka twists and turns, and manages to draw a foul from Olmo in the final third. Switzerland have a free-kick in a dangerous position.

23' Olmo tries to break past the challenge of Akanji and in turn fouls the defender. The Spain forward is incredulous with that decision by referee William Collum.

22' CLOSE! Sommer has a heart-stopping moment between the sticks for the home side. Oyarzabal lifts a cross into the box from the left and it should be a routine catch for the keeper, However, he fumbles the cross behind him. Fortunately for Sommer, he gathers before a white shirt can react.

21' OVER! Switzerland have come to life in the final third. Xhaka presses forward to collect a pass from Zuber on the edge of the box. He floats a cross into the box towards Serferovic. The forward backpedals, but glances his effort over the bar.

20' OVER! Shaqiri lines up a drive from 25 yards on this occasion. He gathers the loose ball following a corner and skips past a challenge from Ruiz. The forward pulls the trigger on a left-footed strike, but sends his attempt over the top.

19' SAVE! Embolo releases Shaqiri into the left inside channel with a neat offload. The Liverpool man goes for a strike on his left foot from a tight angle, forcing Simon to spread himself to divert the ball behind for a corner.

18' Ruiz lines up an effort from distance, but he sends his left-footed strike wide of the target.

16' Embolo charges at the Spain defence, but he runs straight into a challenge with Ramos and loses possession. The home side are not offering a great deal going forward.

12' The referee has to act as Serferovic and Busquets square up. The Barcelona man is the instigator as he kicks the hands of Seferovic.

12' The home side seem fairly content to sit in their shape. Petkovic's men are not being too adventurous in their approach, despite their position in Group 4.

10' OVER! La Roja work the ball from left to right before Olmo tees up Ferran Torres with a backheel. He goes for a strike at goal from the right inside channel, but blasts his attempt over the bar.

10' Spain are seeing a lot of the ball in the early stages of the game. The visitors have found a rhythm to their passing.

8' Fernandes battles down the right flank against Oyarzabal and wins a throw-in for the home side.

6' Olmo is played into space down the right flank and he tries to twist and turn his way past Akanji, but the defender edges the ball out for a corner.

5' Embolo finds space down the right flank, coasting past the challenge of Reguilon. He sends a cross deep to the back post for Zuber, but he fails to guide his strike towards goal. Xhaka latches on the loose ball, but scuffs his effort straight towards Pau Torres to clear.

4' Olmo and Oyarzabal attemot to combine on the edge of the box, but Elvedi sticks out a boot to make the intervention at the back for the hosts.

3' Elvedi floats the ball forward for Embolo, but the forward can only flick it over the head of Pau Torres and out for a goal-kick.

2' Sergi Robert surges down the right flank, but his cutback evades the run of Ferran Torres on the edge of the box.

1' We're underway at St Jakob-Park.

The players are out on the pitch, so we should be underway shortly.

Spain drew against Netherlands in their friendly outing last time out. Only Simon keeps his place in the side between the sticks. Ramos, Sergi Roberto, Pau Torres and Reguilon start in the four-man backline. Busquets, Ruiz and Merino get the nod in the middle of the park. Olmo, Oyarzabal and Ferran Torres form a three-man attack, starting ahead of Morata, Moreno and Marco Asensio.

Switzerland were beaten 2-1 by Belgium during the week in a friendly contest. Petkovic has made six changes to his team to take on Spain tonight. Akanji, Elvedi and Rodriguez come into the backline, while Shaqiri and Freuler start in the midfield. Seferovic leads the line supported by Embolo in the final third.

SPAIN SUBS: David de Gea, Inigo Martinez, Sergio Canales, Alvaro Morata, Koke, Gerard Moreno, Hector Bellerin, Adama Traore, Eric Garcia, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Marc Cucurella, Rodri.

SPAIN (4-3-3): Unai Simon; Sergi Roberto, Sergio Ramos, Pau Torres, Sergio Reguilon; Mikel Merino, Sergio Busquets, Fabian Ruiz; Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres, Mikel Oyarzabal.

SWITZERLAND SUBS: Loris Benito, Eray Comert, Renato Steffen, Yvon Mvogo, Djibril Sow, Ruben Vargas, Becir Omeragic, Admir Mehmedi, Mario Gavranovic, David von Ballmoos.

SWITZERLAND (4-4-1-1): Yann Sommer; Edimilson Fernandes, Nico Elvedi, Manuel Akanji, Ricardo Rodriguez; Xherdan Shaqiri, Granit Xhaka, Remo Freuler, Steven Zuber; Breel Embolo; Haris Seferovic.

Spain can take a huge stride towards the Nations League Finals with a victory tonight. Luis Enrique's men are currently top of Group 4, holding a one-point lead over Germany. La Roja were stunned by Ukraine last time out in Kiev, losing 1-0 on the road. They have to be wary of the threat of Switzerland. Spain face a test of character as well as their quality this evening.

Switzerland are staring down the possibility of relegation to Nations League B if they're unable to lift themselves off the foot of Group 4. Vladimir Petkovic's men have claimed only two points from their four matches to date, one of which came last time out in a 3-3 draw against Germany. Switzerland have played decent football at times, but need to turn those displays into a victory - starting tonight against La Roja.

Good evening and welcome to the live commentary of the Nations League clash between Switzerland and Spain at St. Jakob-Park.

'Qatar is a hospitable and open nation' - Hassan Al Thawadi assures fans on alcohol & more at 2022 World Cup

Deschamps will be the happier of the two managers but he will likely be feeling Martial should have scored one of the three good chances he has had so far. Giroud and Thuram are waiting on the bench if he doesn't find his shooting boots during the interval.

France have been just about the better side, but it's goalless at the break. The visitors went closest when Martial headed Rabiot's overhead kick onto the crossbar after a clever free-kick routine, while Patricio has made two superb saves to deny Martial at close range. Portugal have mainly threatened from distance with Ronaldo and Fernandes seeing shots saved by Lloris, but Ronaldo was disappointed not to score as he headed just over from a corner right at the end of the half.

45' + 1' HALF-TIME: PORTUGAL 0-0 FRANCE

45' Close from Ronaldo! Fernandes picks him out with a corner from the right. He gets above Kimpembe and you would back him to score, but he powers his header just over the crossbar.

43' Danilo gets a rare moment to take an extra touch in midfield and, with few passing options open, he carries it through the centre himself. He takes it from the edge of his area to the halfway line, but then can't find Silva with his attempted pass and Varane picks up the loose ball.

41' Patricio denies Martial again! Hernandez fizzes in a low cross from the left and Martial slides to poke it goalwards at the edge of the six-yard box. It looks a certain goal but Patricio spreads himself and makes an excellent save, taking a knock from Martial in the process.

39' Ronaldo looks to be in down the left but a rare poor touch allows Pavard time to get back and cover. Ronaldo plays the ball back to Fernandes who crosses from deep towards Felix, who flicks a header into the gloves of Lloris.

37' This time Silva delivers the corner straight into the area and picks out Danilo, but he can't get a clean connection on his header as he rises above Rabiot and it spins wide.

36' Ronaldo gets to the right byline and crosses, and Kimpembe throws himself through the air to knock it behind for a corner.

35' While most of the possession has been pretty slick from both teams, some of the passing in the final third has been lacking. This time Martial gives the ball away under little pressure.

33' Ronaldo's shot from range is deflected behind for a corner on the right. Silva takes it short to Fernandes and he delivers a dangerous-looking cross along the line of the six-yard box, but it looks like Pogba who gets to it first to make a strong headed clearance.

32' It has been pretty even so far, but France are slightly on top. They have had five shots to Portugal's four but, while all of Portugal's have come from range, all of France's have been from inside the penalty area.

30' Off the bar! It's a really clever free-kick routine from France. Griezmann shapes to shoot but instead lifts a pass over to Varane at the left side of the area. He heads it back towards Rabiot, who is forced to improvise with an overhead kick as the pass is slightly behind him. It's a good effort which Martial attempts to flick in at the far post, but he heads it onto the crossbar.

29' Carvalho fouls Pogba as the Manchester United man looks to pick up Coman's pass outside the area. It's to the right of the D, and at just about perfect shooting range. Griezmann will take.

27' Martial drifts into the area from the left side of the box and aims a powerful right-footed effort toward the near post, but he lashes his effort into the side-netting.

25' Ronaldo puts the free-kick straight into the wall, then shanks the rebound high and wide.

24' Fernandes is fouled by Pavard just outside the area. The free-kick is just to the left of centre, maybe six yards outside the D. Ronaldo is standing over it...

22' France are playing some good stuff in the first two thirds of the pitch, but Portugal are getting a lot of bodies around the perimeter of their penalty area. It is going to take a clever piece of play to find a way through.

20' Portugal apply some pressure following a corner and the ball eventually drops to Fernandes who, unsurprisingly, goes for goal from range. He catches his half-volley pretty nicely but can only bend his shot straight at Lloris.

18' Coman takes down a long ball on the right and bursts past Guerreiro into the area, but Dias comes across to knock the ball behind for a corner. Griezmann picks out Rabiot just outside the six-yard box from the corner, and he flicks a header just over the bar.

16' France patiently move the ball from right to left as they look to find a way through the massed ranks of Portugal defenders at the edge of the area. Eventually, Martial fouls Silva over on the left and the move comes to nothing.

15' Felix and Ronaldo look to combine down the right but Ronaldo fouls Hernandez as he stretches to knock the ball around the left-back.

14' Rabiot catches Silva with a slightly late challenge on the halfway line as France were looking to launch a quick attack.

12' Great save from Patricio! Martial gets through on goal after a neat one-two with Griezmann through the centre, but the Wolves keeper comes out and makes a solid stop with his outstretched left foot.

11' Good play from Coman! He hesitates at the right corner of the area, feinting as if to cut onto his left foot before skinning Guerreiro on the outside. He drives past and unleashes a powerful shot from a tight angle, which Patricio tips over. The resulting corner is cleared away.

10' Kante looks to pick out Griezmann with a long diagonal pass towards the right corner flag, but he can't reach it and it bounces behind for a goal kick.

8' That Ronaldo effort from range has been the only chance of note so far, but there have been some encouraging early signs here. We should be in for a good game.

6' Ronaldo has his first sight of goal. He finds a pocket of space outside the area to the left and thumps an effort toward the far bottom corner, but Lloris is able to get down and beat it away.

5' Tonight could see one Cristiano Ronaldo take another step towards a piece of history. He currently sits on 102 international goals, with only Iran's Ali Daei ahead of him on 109.

4' Rabiot looks to thread a pass in to Martial in the area, but it's slightly overhit and Fonte is able to shepherd him away as Patricio watches the ball behind for a goal kick.

3' Kante's pass forwards for Martial is unusually poor and a potential attack fades away. Both sides are passing very crisply and pressing intensely.

2' Carvalho turns away from Pogba in midfield and looks for Fernandes over to the right, but his attempted flick around the corner doesn't come off and the ball is picked up by Hernandez. It has been a pretty bright start.

1' We're off!

The teams are out onto the pitch at the Estadio da Luz. We'll have the anthems, and then we'll be ready for kick-off.

Portugal don't have a good record against France, losing 18 of their 26 games against them. They are unbeaten in the last two, though, including the 0-0 draw in Paris last month.

Just look at those teams! We could be in for a treat here. Kylian Mbappe is the headline absence, as he hasn’t recovered from his hamstring injury in time to make the France squad. Coman does return despite an ankle knock, and Portugal’s XI is basically what you would expect. More than half of their bench either plays for Wolves or recently left Wolves for Liverpool.

SUBS: Olivier Giroud, Clement Lenglet, Leo Dubois, Ruben Aguilar, Moussa Sissoko, Steve Mandanda, Marcus Thuram, Lucas Digne, Steven Nzonzi, Mike Maignan, Corentin Tolisso, Kurt Zouma.

FRANCE (4-3-3): Hugo Lloris; Lucas Hernandez, Presnel Kimpembe, Raphael Varane, Benjamin Pavard; Adrien Rabiot, N’Golo Kante, Paul Pogba; Kingsley Coman, Anthony Martial, Antoine Griezmann.

SUBS: Joao Moutinho, Rui Silva, Pedro Neto, Paulinho, Anthony Lopes, Sergio Oliveira, Francisco Trincao, Mario Rui, Ruben Semedo, Diogo Jota, Nelson Semedo, Ruben Neves.

PORTUGAL (4-3-3): Rui Patricio; Raphael Guerreiro, Ruben Dias, Jose Fonte, Joao Cancelo; Bruno Fernandes, Danilo Pereira, William Carvalho; Joao Felix, Cristiano Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva.

The winner of this game will win the group, while a draw would leave the top spot up for grabs going into the final round of fixtures. Portugal play Croatia and France play Sweden on Tuesday.

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of this UEFA Nations League clash, as Fernando Santos’ Portugal host Didier Deschamps’ France in Group A3.

LIVE: Germany vs Ukraine

There could be a few more goals in this game, as Ukraine look dangerous on the counter and Germany look like they could go on a score more, as they have created a lot of opportunities so far.

Germany lead 2-1 at the break, despite going a goal down early on after Yaremchuk fired Ukraine into the lead. However, their lead didn't last long as Sane equalised on 23 minutes after a quick counter started by Goretzka and lethal finish from the winger. It was Goretzka who provided the assist for the second goal as well, finding space in-behind and firing the ball across goal to Werner, who converted from close range.

45' HALF-TIME: GERMANY 2-1 UKRAINE

41' A lot of the Germany attacks have come down the left wing, with Max constantly getting high up the flank and linking up well with Gnabry on that side.

39' There's not long left to play before the end of the first half now, can Ukraine score an equaliser before the half-time whistle? Or, will Germany be able to extend their lead.

37' Werner's goal was his third in his last five international matches for Germany. After finding the back of the net against Spain and Switzerland.

35' Germany are just controlling the game, slowing down the pace slightly now as they have the lead and look to see this out until half-time.

32' Neuer still hasn't had a save to make in goal for Germany and there isn't anything he could've done to stop the opening goal from Ukraine.

30' We're at the half an hour mark here in Leipzig and it remains 1-1 between Germany and Ukraine, but the game is showing all the signs of there being a few more goals.

26' SAVE! Goretzka tries his luck from distance, powering the ball towards the top right-hand corner of the net. However, Pyatovl does well to read it and makes an excellent diving save to push it around the post.

25' Goretzka has been heavily involved for Germany so far, dominating the midfield and linking up play very nicely into the attackers, which is causing Ukraine a few problems.

22' Yaremchuk and Bonfim link up well in the final third, playing a quick one-two, but they are just crowded out in the nick of time and Germany manage to clear the danger before either get a shot away at goal.

20' Germany have never lost a game against Ukraine. They have won four and drawn three of their seven meetings since 1997.

18' Ukraine look very dangerous on the counter-attack, with the front three all having the pace to cause Germany problems at the back and this could become an issue as the hosts push for an equaliser.

16' CLOSE! Werner gets in behind Zabarnyi and then just gets to the ball ahead of Pyatovl who rushed off his line and the striker flicked it towards an empty net, but it just lacked the pace to fly straight into the goal and Zabarnyi slides in to poke it behind for a corner.

14' There is an excellent pace to the game, with Germany looking to try and get level straight away and create some more goal scoring opportunities as they did at the start of the game.

10' This is better from the visitors, they have calmed the game down slightly now and are enjoying some possession of their own. However, the German defence look very comfortable.

8' It's all Germany in these opening moments of the game, they are keeping the ball well in midfield and are already causing plenty of issues in the Ukraine final third of the pitch.

6' Almost an own goal! Max gets to the byline down the left wing and drills a low ball into the six-yard box, which Sobol seems to have covered, but he gets his feet mixed up and end up almost sending it into the back of his net, rather than away from danger.

5' Decent chance! Max whips a good free-kick into the box from the left wing and Koch meets it unmarked and tries to power the ball into the back of the net. However, he doesn't get the contact he wants and it goes well wide of the Ukraine goal.

3' CHANCE! Early opportunity for Germany! Ginter delivers a lovely low cross into the penalty area, that finds Max unmarked at the far post and he opts to pull the ball back to Goretzka rather than shoot at goal himself. However, Goretzka gets too much on it and it flies high over the crossbar. He should've done better there.

1' We're under way!

The teams are out on the pitch and kick-off is just a few minutes away, stay tuned for all of the match action!

Ukraine make six changes to their starting line-up, with Lunin replaced in goal by Pyatovl and Kryvtsov, Mykaylichenko, Kovalenko, Makarenko and Yarmolenko all dropping out. They have been replaced by Zabarnyi, Sobol, Stepanenko, Malinovskyi and Bonfim.

Only three players remain in the Germany starting line-up from the side that beat Czech Republic in midweek, with Koch, Max and Gundogan all featuring today. Whilst the likes of Neuer, Sane, Gnabry and Werner all return for the hosts.

UKRAINE SUBS: Valerii Bondar, Yevhen Cheberko, Andriy Lunin, Yuri Pankiv, Bogdan Mykaylichenko, Evgeniy Makarenko, Ihor Kharatin, Moraes, Sergey Krivtsov.

UKRAINE (4-3-3): Andriy Pyatovl; Yukhym Konoplya, Mykola Matvyenko, Illia Zabarnyi, Eduard Sobol; Taras Stepanenko, Ruslan Malinovskyi, Oleksandr Zinchenko; Oleksandr Zubkov, Roman Yaremchuk, Marlos Bonfim.

GERMANY SUBS: Nadiem Armiri, Jonathan Tah, Benjamin Henrichs, Kevin Trapp, Julian Brandt, Florian Neuhaus, Gian-Luca Waldschmidt, Niklas Stark, Bernd Leno, Felix Uduokhai, Mahmoud Dahoud.

GERMANY (3-4-2-1): Manuel Neuer; Niklas Sule, Antonio Rudiger, Robin Koch; Matthias Ginter, Ilkay Gundogan, Leon Goretzka Philipp Max; Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry; Timo Werner.

Meanwhile Ukraine have won two and lost two of their Nations League games, beating Spain and Switzerland, to put them level with Germany and just one point behind Spain at the top of the group. The visitors also played a friendly in midweek, but they suffered a 2-0 defeat against Poland.

Germany welcome Ukraine in this tight Nations League group, with both teams on six points as Germany have won just once and drawn three, but that victory came against Ukraine last month, a 2-1 win. The Germans come into the game on the back of a 1-0 success over the Czech Republic in midweek, thanks to a goal from Gian-Luca Waldschmidt.

Hello and welcome to our LIVE match commentary of the Nations League clash between Germany and Ukraine in Leipzig.

‘Werner already up there with Kane & Vardy’ – Chelsea striker is ‘world-class’, says Chilwell

The Blues left-back has been impressed by a fellow new arrival at Stamford Bridge and sees the German forward achieving great things in England

Timo Werner is “already up there” with Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy when it comes to the most destructive strikers in the Premier League, claims Chelsea full-back Ben Chilwell.

The Blues won the race for a much-coveted signature during the summer transfer window.

Werner had been heavily linked with a switch to Liverpool, but Stamford Bridge ended up being his landing spot in the Premier League.

Frank Lampard's side invested £47.5 million ($63m) in the Germany international, with an impressive strike rate at RB Leipzig bringing him into the thoughts of leading sides across Europe.

Chelsea were convinced that they had landed a frontman tailor-made for the Premier League, with Werner’s versatility and work-rate marking him out as a useful asset.

Faith has been rewarded with eight goals through 12 appearances and fellow new boy Chilwell believes a prolific 24-year-old is comparable to Golden Boot winners on the books at Tottenham and Leicester.

“I’d already say he’s up there with them two [Kane and Vardy] and he can definitely go on to be absolutely world-class for a long time for the next 10 years or so,” Chilwell told Soccer AM.

“I think when you look at his age and how prolific he is in front of goal, even now his start at Chelsea he’s scored a lot of goals already. Just in front of goal he’s so good.

“He has similar characteristics to both Vardy and Harry to be fair. In terms of running the channels and how quick he is it’s similar to Vardy. With Harry his link-up play and his finishing is similar.

“He’s definitely in a category with them two.”

Werner has been backed to challenge for the Premier League top scorer prize in 2020-21, with Kurt Zouma saying of a predatory finisher: “He’s been scoring goals for fun in the German league.

“That’s why he has come here, to show himself in the Premier League. I think he can do it. He has the ability and he’s so quick.

“We have a great team. We don’t need to get too excited. We just need to be ready and keep confidence high.”

Werner has ground to make up if he is to land a prestigious individual prize, with his four-goal haul in the English top-flight leaving him four adrift of Vardy, Mohamed Salah, Heung-min Son and Dominic Calvert-Lewin at the top of the charts.
