Barca victory cuts gap to Atletico to one point

That is all from this LaLiga fixture, until next time!

Koeman's attentions will now turn to Saturday, where his side face Real Madrid, who sit two points behind Barcelona in third. Valladolid, who put in a fighting effort against the hosts, remain in 16th and they host Granada.

Barcelona extend their LaLiga winning streak to six games, moving a point behind league-leaders Atletico Madrid in the process. First-half efforts from Pedri and Kodro were only denied by the frame of the respective goals before the game came to life in the second half. Plano's dismissal for a sliding tackle on Dembele encouraged the hosts, who grabbed a crucial, late winner from Dembele at the back post in the 90th minute. It's all over at Camp Nou, where the hosts eventually run out 1-0 winners.

90' + 4' FULL-TIME: BARCELONA 1-0 REAL VALLADOLID

90' + 3' The referee makes his way to the touchline and this time books manager Sergio Gonzalez for his excessive protests on the side of the pitch.

90' + 2' Amidst the carnage of Dembele's late goal, the fourth official indicated there will be four minutes of added time. Barcelona have to hold out for two more minutes against 10-man Valladolid and they will move back up to second in LaLiga.

89' CLOSE! Trincao finds space in the right-hand channel, cutting in and delivering towards the far post. Masip rushes out but doesn't get to it, however, the goalkeeper's positioning does enough to force Moriba to head wide to the left of goal.

88' Dembele goes one way and then the other but he can't get past Nacho. The visitors then look to counter-attack, however, Nacho's pass is overhit and Barcelona regain possession.

86' Messi has been directly involved in 23 league goals in 2021 (16 goals and 7 assists), more than any other player in the top five European leagues. The Argentinian has had a direct hand in eight goals in his last four LaLiga games against Valladolid (4 goals and 4 assists). How much do Barcelona need a winner from him now?

83' Alba produces a left-footed cross towards the far post, where Trincao is unmarked but the Portuguese youngster can't bring down the ball and Valladolid hurry a clearance.

82' After the commotion is dealt with, Messi unleashes Dembele with a short free-kick down the left and the Frenchman crosses towards the back post. Lenglet gets underneath it, however, and the visitors manage to clear once more.

80' Moments after sending off Plano, the referee makes his way to the touchline and also sends off a member of Valladolid's coaching staff, presumably for their protests following Plano's dismissals.

79' Alba stalls at the byline and sends his cross into the legs of Hervias, winning another corner on the left. Messi goes short to De Jong, who sees his floated cross headed away at the near post.

78' At home, Barcelona are unbeaten in their last 13 LaLiga games against Valladolid (W10 D3), since a defeat 1-2 in November 1997 under Louis Van Gaal. They are likely to maintain their unbeaten record but they will be desperate to find a winner in the last 10 minutes or so.

75' Braithwaite smartly flicks through a crowd of bodies inside the area for the run of Messi. The Argentine hesitates, perhaps unwilling to shoot with his right foot, before going down under the pressure of Hervias. The referee, however, waves play on.

72' Dembele, who is now occupying the left-hand side, runs at Sanchez before switching play. Dest receives it on the right-hand side, reaching the byline before drilling across goal. Braithwaite thinks he has a chance but Masip gathers inside the six-yard area.

71' WIDE! Dembele comes in from the left, opting to pass rather than shoot. The Frenchman offloads to the edge of the area, where Pedri leaves it for Messi, who whips a low, left-footed effort just wide of Masip's goal to the left.

70' Masip races out to the left, throwing his body in the way to stop Alba from crossing. Messi takes the resulting corner but Valladolid once again manage to clear through the middle.

69' Sergio Gonzalez’s men have won only one of their last 11 LaLiga games - 2-1 vs Getafe in March - although they have drawn six times within this run (L4). They look good value for another draw here so far.

67' Pedri stings the hands of Masip, however, the goalkeeper - who has been called upon numerous times in the last 10 minutes - once again saves, catching the ball and going down to ground with it.

66' Alba has acres of space to the left of goal, however, his cross across the six-yard area quickly gets turned away before Trincao can pounce at the back post.

64' After ushering away the visitors' protests, the referee allows Messi to take the free-kick he initially awarded around two minutes ago. The Argentine beats the wall but Masip catches the effort with ease.

62' In the previous phase of play, Janko had blocked Alba's pass and the ball cannoned off his foot and into the left-back's hand. Valladolid are still protesting for a penalty but VAR sticks with the referee's original decision.

62' Messi dances around the tackle of Alcaraz and goes down outside the box to the right. The referee blows for another foul but the Valladolid players surround him about an earlier handball decision, which VAR are going to take a look at.

61' Dest and Busquets both look to cross from the right, with the former's cross from deep looking for Griezmann inside the area. Masip, however, is alert to the danger as he races out to claim the ball and command his area.

60' Koeman is preparing some changes on the touchline as he still appears unsatisfied by his team's second-half performance. Whether it be Dembele or Griezmann who goes off up top, the hosts need to inject some energy into their attacking phases of play.

59' SAVE AND WIDE! Messi carries possession over the halfway line, playing in Dembele, who beats the offside trap with his run. Dembele shoots across goal with his right foot and Masip parries away. The rebound loops up to Griezmann inside the area but he can only head wide of goal to the left despite Masip being out of position from the first save.

58' As was the case with the first half, Valladolid have once again started the stronger of the two teams. With a bit more clinical passing on the break, they could have easily carved Barcelona open a number of times already.

57' CLOSE! The away side look to counter-attack but Plano's pass to Nacho is poor and the move breaks down. Olaza regains possession, driving into the area before smashing a left-footed strike. Ter Stegen dives across and gratefully watches the ball go wide of the target and out for a goal-kick.

55' Bruno Gonzalez temporarily goes down and the referee stops play. The centre-back, however, quickly returns to his feet without requiring medical attention and the game gets back underway.

54' Kodro is unmarked through the middle as Guardiola leads the visitors' counter-attack. Despite Kodro's enticing run, Guardiola ignores his team-mate and ends up getting dispossessed in the left-hand channel.

53' After scoring four braces in his first five LaLiga appearances against Valladolid in LaLiga (three for Real Sociedad and one for Atletico Madrid), Griezmann has failed to score in his last three games in the competition against them. He is yet to get a chance in this game here.

52' Dest does incredibly well, making up ground on Nacho to dispossess the wing-back before he can get onto Olaza's throughball. Down the other end, Messi makes it through numerous defenders and is then tackled on the right.

51' As always, it is Messi who is in charge of the free-kick, which is 25 yards out and in the centre. This time, however, the Argentine fails to beat the wall and the visitors head away a clearance.

50' De Jong advances from his deep position, rolling in Dembele, who sees his cross blocked before it can find Griezmann in the area. The hosts come again and Dembele wins a free-kick on the edge of the area, courtesy of Kodro's foul.

48' The hosts work possession inside from the right, with Pedri feeding Alba, who optimistically shoots from 25 yards out and Masip watches the left-back's attempt sail over the bar.

47' Dembele ignores the overlapping run of Dest, instead opting to cut in and attempt a left-footed effort. His strike, however, gets blocked before Masip is required to make a save.

46' Both sets of players have returned and the second half gets underway!

Koeman needs to inject some pace and attacking impetus into his side at half-time, so he may look to the likes of Trincao on the bench if he feels Dembele's performance has been insufficient. Sergio Gonzalez will be delighted with his team's first-half efforts and will simply be asking for more of the same next half.

Both sides wander down the Camp Nou tunnel level at 0-0 at half-time, after a fairly quiet first half. Kodro nearly put the visitors ahead, however, his headed effort was denied by the crossbar. Barcelona created little but Pedri's low, driven strike on the stroke of half-time did cannon into the post, after a parried save by Masip. Neither team have got a grip of this game so far, which has also seen three yellow cards already.

45' + 2' HALF-TIME: BARCELONA 0-0 REAL VALLADOLID

45' + 1' POST! The hosts look to play intricately around the area, however, the away side stand firm and poke clear. The loose ball falls to Pedri, who runs onto it before unleashing a low, right-footed effort from 25 yards out. Masip scrambles across, saving with his right hand and turning the effort onto the right-hand post. With no team-mate following up, Masip collects the rebound and the chance goes away.

44' After Mingueza's foul in the middle, Kodro remains down and requires the physios to come on. The forward makes his way to the touchline before quickly returning and it looks like he will be fine to carry on.

42' The away side press high up the pitch in numbers but this is their downfall as the hosts play through the press with ease. The move, however, breaks down as Sanchez intervenes in front of Dembele before Masip catches Alba's cross moments later.

41' Griezmann rolls through for the run of Dembele, who coolly slides it back for Messi. Sanchez and Bruno Gonzalez both throw their bodies in the way to make sure the Argentine's left-footed strike doesn't trouble Masip before seeing the ball deflect away from danger.

39' The hosts move it around patiently, eventually finding Alba, who drives into the feet of Messi. The Argentine twists and turns but he can't find space in the area as the away side crowd out the Barcelona forward.

38' Valladolid have only kept three clean sheets in LaLiga this season; the joint-fewest of any team, alongside Levante. So far, they have looked assured defensively as the likes of Messi and Dembele have caused no real threat.

37' Koeman waves his arms on the touchline, as if to encourage his side to play quicker. He is right, they are playing with no real intensity and as of yet it has been easy for Valladolid to sit deep and defend any potential attacks.

36' Plano leads the away side's counter-attack, which quickly stalls as Barcelona regroup in numbers. The visitors do, however, work it out to Nacho, who sees his low, left-footed cross turned away by Mingueza, who dives in front of Kodro.

35' Dest and Pedri link-up on the right, with the American losing the ball and racing into a tackle with Plano. The visitors' midfielder ends up on the ground injured but he quickly returns to his feet and is interested more in speaking to the referee then receiving any medical attention.

33' Messi slides in Alba, who drives down the left before standing up a cross for Dembele. The Frenchman heads from the penalty spot into the hands of Masip, who doesn't have to move to make a relatively easy save. Dembele will feel he should be doing better from there.

32' Janko goes surging down the right-hand channel, reaching the byline before seeing his crossing attempts blocked by the feet of Mingueza. Nacho and Janko are continually finding joy on the flanks and it may only be a matter of time before they create another chance.

31' Dembele is the intended target of a direct, long pass from the back but Sanchez deals with it easily, heading down to one of the other two centre-backs that were marking the forward. Barcelona, however, then regain possession quickly on the left.

30' After a positive start from both sides, this game has slowed down to almost a walking pace as neither team seem to keen on moving possession around at any significant pace. The hosts need to inject some energy into their play if they are to move within a point of league-leaders Atletico.

26' Mesa goes on a rare foray forward, finding himself on the edge of the area, where he miscues a right-footed strike well wide of goal. Koeman doesn't look too happy on the touchline that the midfielder was allowed to progress that far.

25' Barcelona have scored 11 goals from build-up sequences in LaLiga this season (spells of play featuring 10+ passes); the joint-most of any team within the top five European leagues in 2020-21, alongside Paris Saint-Germain. They are remaining patient in their build-up play again but for now the scores remain level.

23' Dest dances around the challenge of Olaza inside the visitors' area and throws himself to the floor, appealing for a penalty. The referee disagrees and VAR then sticks with the original decision, allowing play to resume with a throw-in to the home side.

22' Olaza slides through the left-hand channel for the run of Nacho, who drills a cross across the face of goal. Kodro and Guardiola look to get on the end of it but Ter Stegen collects inside his own six-yard area.

20' Plano beats Lenglet to possession on the edge of the Barcelona area and finds the feet of Kodro. The forward looks to return the favour to his number 10 but Plano is caught on his heels and Mingueza intercepts.

19' Busquets and Nacho clash on the left and the visitors' left wing-back ends up down on the floor holding his ankle. After a brief moment with play carrying on, the hosts put the ball out and Nacho walks off the injury without requiring medical attention.

17' Janko gets encouraged from the sidelines by Sergio Gonzalez after a roaming run in the right-hand channel, however, the right wing-back's cross finds none of his team-mates in the middle. Plano tries to seek out Guardiola and Lenglet comfortably intervenes at the back.

16' WIDE! Masip orders his five-man wall about before Messi steps up to take the free-kick. The Argentine then steps up to the central set-piece, curling his left-footed strike over the wall but also wide of the Valladolid goal to the right.

15' Barcelona knock possession about for two minutes or so, remaining patient in their attempts to carve an opening. Messi decides to go more direct, exchanging a one-two with Busquets before being fouled by Sanchez in a good position, 25 yards from goal.

13' After a strong start, Valladolid are now dropping a little deeper and watching the likes of Pedri and Messi dictate play in front of them. Griezmann then goes down clutching his face but yet again the referee waves play on, despite the forward's clash with Alcaraz in the middle of the park.

11' Sergio Gonzalez has lost all seven of his games as a manager against Barcelona in LaLiga, his worst 100% losing record against any opponent in the competition. He will be desperate to change that record here.

10' Koeman's men take their second corner of the game and this time go more direct, with Messi's cross finding Dembele. The Frenchman heads down from the set-piece but Masip catches with ease before distributing quickly.

9' OFF THE BAR! Janko has two attempts at crossing in the right-hand channel, with the second creating a chance at the near post. Plano can't get to meet the cross but Kodro does, heading towards the top right corner. Ter Stegen stands motionless, however, the hosts get away with it as Kodro's effort cannons into the crossbar and away from danger.

8' Messi evades two or three tackles before finding Busquets, who immediately plays out to Griezmann. The Frenchman looks to cross towards Alba on the far side, however, the assistant once again has their flag up. On this occasion, it's Dembele who is adjudged to have strayed offside.

7' The first corner of the game comes for the hosts, with Sanchez having to intervene before Dembele can test Masip. They play the resulting corner short and the set-piece comes to nothing.

6' Kodro closes in on the back post, attempting to latch on to Nacho's cross but Lenglet does well to head away from danger. The visitors are directing all of their play down the left-hand channel as it stands, often getting in behind Dest, who is pushing high up the pitch.

4' Griezmann and Messi exchange passes with the Argentine racing towards goal before going down under the pressure of Mesa. Messi protests, however, the referee waves play on and Valladolid look to break from the back.

3' The first shot of the game comes courtesy of Alcaraz's long-range effort, which the midfielder slips while taking, and Ter Stegen comfortably gathers in the centre of his goal.

2' With the covering of Mesa and Alcaraz behind him, Plano is pushing the furthest forward out of Valladolid's three-man midfield and he soon forces a mistake out of Ter Stegen. The goalkeeper needlessly clears out of play but the hosts quickly regain possession.

1' Referee Santiago Jaime Latre gets this LaLiga fixture underway!

Barcelona have won 13 of their last 14 LaLiga games against Valladolid, with the only exception being their 0-1 defeat away from home in March 2014. They have won each of the most recent five meetings.

Sergio Gonzalez makes five changes from their draw with Sevilla as he changes to a three-man defence. Bruno Gonzalez and Sanchez come in at the back, while Nacho starts at left wing-back. Up top, Kodro replaces Shon Weissman, who misses out entirely. In goal, Roberto Jimenez also drops out and captain Masip takes his place.

Koeman names an unchanged line-up to the one that crushed Real Sociedad 6-1 last time out. De Jong will continue to slot in alongside Lenglet and Mingueza, while Dest again starts at right wing-back as Sergi Roberto remains sidelined. Dembele, Griezmann and Messi will operate as the front three once more, meaning Braithwaite and Trincao have to settle for the bench.

SUBS: Samu Perez, Miguel Angel Rubio, Pablo Hervias, Fran Alvarez, Moha Moukhliss, Toni Villa, Oriol Rey, Waldo Rubio, Kuki Zalazar, Marcos de Sousa.

REAL VALLADOLID (3-5-2): Jordi Masip; Javi Sanchez, Bruno Gonzalez, Lucas Olaza; Saidy Jano, Roque Mesa, Oscar Plano, Ruben Alcaraz, Nacho; Sergi Guardiola, Kenan Kodro.

SUBS: Ronald Araujo, Miralem Pjanic, Martin Braithwaite, Riqui Puig, Trincao, Matheus Fernandes, Samuel Umtiti, Junior Firpo, Inaki Pena, Ilaix Moriba, Konrad de la Fuente, Arnau Tenas.

BARCELONA (3-4-3): Marc-Andre ter Stegen; Oscar Mingueza, Clement Lenglet, Frenkie De Jong; Sergino Dest, Sergio Busquets, Pedri, Jordi Alba; Ousmane Dembele, Lionel Messi, Antoinee Griezmann.

In contrast, Valladolid are just three points clear of the relegation zone in 16th. However, the visitors are on a four-game unbeaten run coming in to this fixture. They haven’t lost since February - courtesy of a 1-0 loss to Real Madrid - and remain in pursuit of securing a third straight season in LaLiga.

The hosts are on the hunt for a sixth consecutive LaLiga victory and Ronald Koeman’s men sit third in the Spanish top-flight. With Sevilla defeating Atletico Madrid last night, the title race has been blown wide open and a win for Barcelona would move them up to second and put them just a point behind league-leaders Atletico.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the LaLiga fixture between Barcelona and Real Valladolid at Camp Nou.

Muskwe scores as Ikpeazu’s Wycombe Wanderers defeat Rotherham United

The Zimbabwe international was among the goalscorers as the Chairboys secured an away victory over the Millers

Admiral Muskwe was on target as Wycombe Wanderers recorded a 3-0 away victory over Rotherham United in Monday’s English Championship encounter.

The Zimbabwean – who is on loan from Leicester City last found the net in his team's 7-2 defeat to Brentford on January 30, 2021.

Against the Millers, he rediscovered his scoring form as the Chairboys cruised to an impressive away triumph at the New York Stadium.

Paul Warne’s side made a nightmare start as Muskwe handed the visiting side a second-minute lead with a cool finish that beat goalkeeper Viktor Johansson.

Despite the lead, they did not put their feet off the pedal and they deservedly got the second goal in the 24th minute courtesy of a deflected effort from Jason McCarthy – with Uche Ikpeazu providing the assist.

The Millers turned up the tempo notwithstanding the scoreline, but poor finishing was their major undoing as the first half ended in favour of the visiting side.

Before the commencement of the second half, manager Warne made a double attacking substitution. Republic of Ireland’s winger of Nigerian descent Chiedozie Ogbene – who was returning to action after his injury setback – replaced Daniel Barlaser while Ben Wiles was yanked off for Florian Jozefzoon.

Even at that, the change did not bring the much-needed spark for Rotherham.

Jozefzoon wasted glorious opportunities before Fred Onyedinma blasted into an empty stand behind the goal.

Wycombe were not bereft of opportunities as Dennis Adeniran tried his luck from distance, but Johansson got his body behind his shot.

Seven minutes from full time, David Wheeler scored the third goal thanks to a fine assist from substitute Adebayo Akinfenwa.

Leicester City loanee Muskwe – who now boasts two goals so far this term – was replaced in the 87th minute for Garath McCleary while Adeniran was on parade from start to finish.

English forward of Nigerian origin Freddie Ladapo was handed a place in Rotherham’s starting XI, but he could only play for 76 minutes.

Even with this result, Gareth Ainsworth's Wycombe Wanderers sit at the base of the English Championship table with 33 points from 40 outings.

What happened between Salah & Ramos? Liverpool & Real Madrid stars' Champions League feud explained

Reds fans were left with a bitter taste in the aftermath of the 2018 Champions League final, which ended in contentious circumstances

Real Madrid vs Liverpool is set to be one of the most thrilling match-ups in the 2020-21 Champions League, the two European heavyweights facing each other in the quarter-finals.

Both clubs have illustrious histories, and are among the most decorated across the continent. But perhaps the most memorable event concerning the two in recent years dates back to 2018, involving controversy between Sergio Ramos and Mohamed Salah.

But what exactly took place between the pair? Goal takes a look.

What happened between Salah and Ramos in the Champions League?

Salah and Ramos' infamous feud began in the 2018 Champions League final contested between Real Madrid and Liverpool in Kiev.

The two were involved in a brutal tackle inside the first half of the fixture, with Ramos seen having his arm locked around Salah's shoulder and the pair subsequently flying to the ground.

Salah ended up having to leave the pitch in tears, unable to continue. The striker was later diagnosed with a dislocated shoulder, which forced him to miss out on Egypt's World Cup group stage fixture against Uruguay.

The Egypt international was forced to watch his Liverpool side lose the final from the dressing room in a devastating 3-1 defeat.

Sadio Mane equalised in the second half after Karim Benzema's opening goal, but two goals by Gareth Bale ensured a Real Madrid victory.

It was Real Madrid's 13th win in the competition - a record.

Understandably, both Liverpool staff and players were left immensely frustrated by the situation, as had Salah remained on the pitch, the outcome of the final could potentially have been different.

"If you watch it back and you are not with Real Madrid then you think it is ruthless and brutal," an incensed Jurgen Klopp told reporters after the game.

"I saw the ref taking charge of big games at the World Cup and nobody really thinks about that later. But in a situation like that somebody needs to judge it better.

"If VAR is coming then it is a situation where you have to look again. Not to give a red card but to look again and say: ‘What is that?’ It was ruthless."

Ramos, however, will not be involved in the first leg of the quarter-final at the Bernabeu. He has been sidelined with a muscle injury in his left leg that was picked up during the March international break.

What has Salah said?

Though the incident still remains a sore point for Liverpool supporters, it is hopeful that both sets of teams have moved on from the controversy ahead of their Champions League quarter-final meeting in April 2021, the first time the two are to face each other following the 2018 final.

Liverpool went on to lift the Champions League just a year later, followed by a first-ever Premier League victory in 2020.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, have been successful on the domestic front.

Salah has stated that he is keen to put the events of 2018 behind him ahead of the Champions League fixture.

"That game is in the past, so I don't think about [what happened with Ramos]," Salah told Marca.

"I'm thinking about the team. Everyone is focused on their team and everyone wants to win... that's it. "Let's just say that I have special motivation to win the tie and go through to the semi-finals. What's going to happen now isn't going to change the result of the final in Kyiv. That's in the past.

"I think we're both strong. Both teams have won their last two games in the Champions League. Both teams are prepared. It's a special competition and both teams are doing well in it."

Otto Addo: Former Ghana star and Borussia Dortmund assistant coach opens up on future

Borussia Dortmund assistant coach Otto Addo reveals he is currently unsure about the prospects of making a step up into a head coaching role.

The former international joined the Black and Yellows backroom staff in 2019, leaving Danish outfit Nordsjaelland.

In the past he had also worked with Hamburg and Borussia Monchengladbach.

"I can't really tell," Addo told CNN when asked about a possible role as head coach.

"Now, as assistant coach, it's fun for me -- to work with young players is really, really good. I think it's an important role. In football, you actually can't think too far [ahead]. You have to look from season to season ... and I'm not really sure if I could do it really, to be honest," he says with modesty.

"I'm learning day-by-day, and at the moment, I'm happy with the role as an assistant coach, but also with the role of guiding the young players, talented players and helping them to grow up, to step into the adult football scene and to guide them, especially in difficult situations."

Addo began it all at Hamburg when he joined the club during the twilight of his playing career in 2007, when he spent time between the first and second teams.

It was during this time that he started working with the club's young talent as a mentor.

"I started thinking: 'Okay, what can I do now?' So I jumped into scouting for about two or three months to see if I would like it, because I was sure that I wanted to do something with football -- about this I was very, very sure -- but I didn't know which section to go," the 45-year-old explained.

"The scouting was okay. You know, traveling alone and watching games alone was quite different and I'm a guy who likes to be around people.

"Then the opportunity came to join the under-19s [at Hamburg] and they asked me if I could join as an assistant and if I could help.

"I stepped in and I liked it. I like to work with young players and with people. It was a good experience and I said: 'OK ... I want to do this for the rest of my life.'"

Born in Germany to Ghanaian parents, Addo switched allegiance to represent Ghana in 1999, a year before joining the Black Stars for the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

In 2006, he made a return to the team after a long absence, just in time to make the final squad for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

He has been linked to Ghana's coaching job in recent times.

Middlesbrough’s injury crisis grows as Morsy is ruled out for the season

The former Egypt international suffered a knock during Monday’s draw with Watford and will not feature for Neil Warnock’s side

Middlesbrough have been handed yet another injury blow following news that Sam Morsy has been ruled out for the rest of 2020-21 campaign.

Featuring in his 31st game of the season, the Egyptian hobbled off having damaged his medial ligaments during Monday afternoon’s 1-1 draw with Watford.

The 29-year-old was injured following a challenge that earned Nathaniel Chalobah a yellow card from referee Tim Robinson. Although he tried to continue playing, albeit, he was forced to admit defeat and was replaced by Hayden Coulson in the 30th minute.

The former Wigan Athletic and Chesterfield man went on social media to confirm this heart-breaking news – which will see him out of action for Neil Warnock’s men for the rest of this term.

“Looks like my season is done. No malice in the tackle just the impact of the ball, thanks for the support this season and can’t wait to see everyone bask at the riverside …inshallah a quick recovery and strong end to the season,” Morsy tweeted.

An initial test from Boro’s medics had suggested ligament damage. However, he will undergo a detailed examination later this week, but his manager is not expecting him to play again this season.

“Sam’s out for the season now. He’s done his medial ligaments. We don’t know quite how bad yet, but he’s out for the season,” Warnock told the media after the game.

“We have blow after blow on the injuries – that’s four proper first-team players out now.

“In a VAR situation, I think the situation with Sam could have been different because we’ve looked at it and he did have both feet off the ground.

“Apparently, if Sam hadn’t gone in for it like he did, his injury would have been a lot worse. If he’d gone in sloppy, it would have destroyed his ligaments, so he’s got away with it but he’s still going to be out for a few months.”

Aside from Morsy, Anfernee Dijksteel and Marcus Browne are also ruled out of the season, while Marcus Tavernier and Dael Fry are expected back in three weeks time.

Occupying the 10th spot in the Championship log after accruing 57 points from 40 games, Boro are guests of Barnsley in their next fixture on April 4.

Hazard absent from Real squad to face Liverpool

The Belgium international has not played for Real Madrid since the middle of March

Eden Hazard will not make his return against Liverpool, with the Belgian winger left out of the Real Madrid squad for Tuesday’s Champions League clash.

Hazard has not featured for Real since March 13 on account of hip complaint.

Manager Zinedine Zidane said at the weekend that the Belgian had responded well to treatment and was hopeful of being able to call on the former Chelsea man for the clash with Liverpool.

Hazard absent from squad

However, the 30-year-old has not done enough in training to prove his well-being, as his name did not feature on the 21-man list.

A boost for Zidane is the return of Federico Valverde, with the midfielder back in the ranks for the first time since the win over Celta Vigo March 20.

Zidane urges caution

Hazard has had a torrid time with injuries since joining Real from Chelsea in the summer of 2019.

With Hazard on the brink of a return to action, Zidane does not want to rush his return and prompt a setback.

"Eden has to be calm," Zidane said at a press conference on Monday, prior to the announcement of the squad. "We never risk a player returning if he's not ready.

"We'll do things little by little and we'll see when he'll play again. That's how it is at the moment."

Can Real remain dominant?

Real’s most recent meeting with Liverpool was the Champions League final in 2018, which they won 3-1.

Their two previous meetings were 1-0 and 3-0 victories for Real in 2014, with Liverpool not having beaten the Spanish champions since 2009.

Liverpool have improved since their clash in 2018, but Real are in fine form and Zidane will be keen to secure an advantage going into the second leg.

Kaizer Chiefs can beat any team - Kambole

Spurred by recent encouraging results, the Zambian feels Amakhosi can come out victorious from any challenge

Kaizer Chiefs striker Lazarous Kambole says Tuesday's Premier Soccer League clash against Stellenbosch will be a "different ball game" but the Soweto giants are now in a position to beat any team they come up against.

Amakhosi will be playing their third successive home game at their FNB base as they welcome Stellenbosch on the backdrop of two vital wins.

After beating Orlando Pirates in the Soweto derby on March 21, before last Saturday's Caf Champions League 1-0 win over Wydad Casablanca, Kambole believes they are primed for victory against any side.

“Yah, it’s gonna be a different ball game,” said Kambole as per iDiski TV.

“But we’ll do our homework as Kaizer Chiefs, and it ain’t gonna be an easy game. So we just have to give it all and make sure we collect maximum points. I think looking at the calibre of the team, I think we can beat any team with the right mentality, the right attitude, and I am positive, the fact that we’ll be playing at home again in Stellenbosch.

"I’m sure we have a great chance of winning. No, the game [against Wydad Cssablanca] was tough, because we were a man down, which changed our system, we have to adjust to the game. But the most important thing is that we’ve won, and just a great effort from the team.

"Yah, in terms of the motivation, because we’ve played two difficult games, and we’ve won all of them, like the previous games we were not winning. So it’s a morale booster for the team and for us as players, and we just looking forward to the next game.”

Chiefs are currently placed in position nine on the PSL standings as they now seek to build on their two last wins.

While Amakhosi are flying from their latest results, they will, however, be without Njabulo Blom when they host Stellenbosch as the midfielder is suspended after accumulating four yellow cards.

They face a Stellies side placed 12th on the log with a point less than Chiefs.

Uganda Cup: SC Villa suffer shock home loss to Ndejje University as Vipers SC down Busoga United

Wakiso Giants claimed a 2-1 first-leg win away to minnows Water FC in the annual tournament

SC Villa kicked off their Uganda Cup campaign with a first leg 1-0 loss to Ndejje University at Bombo Barracks Stadium on Monday.

Brian Ssali scored the lone goal to give the minnows a slim advantage ahead of the second leg.

The visitors came into the match as favourites owing to their experience in the competition as well as the Ugandan Premier League.

However, they failed to get their way past the Fufa Big League side who played with composure and belief. They were cautious in approach and ensured the ball was cleared from dangerous areas.

In the 37th minute, the Jogoo were caught in a counter-attack and George Akena managed to cross the ball to Ssali. The latter tapped the ball into the back of the net to ensure his team went on the break with a slim lead.

In the 65th minute, the hosts were dealt a blow when Nicholas Luzige received his marching orders.

Despite playing for more than 25 minutes with a man less, Ndejje maintained their defensive discipline to carry an advantage ahead of the second leg.

In another Cup assignment, BUL FC claimed a 2-0 win away to Black Power FC.

The Jinja-based side had to wait until the 19th minute to score their first goal courtesy of Simon Peter Oketch.

Deogracious Ojok scored the second goal for the visitors in the 27th minute to ensure they carried a huge advantage ahead of the second meeting in the annual competition.

Ugandan Premier League reigning champions capitalised on the home-ground advantage to defeat Busoga United 3-0.

Cesar Manzoki and Richard Basangwa had early chances to get the ball in the back of the net but they failed to capitalise on them. Good goalkeeping from Busoga custodian Rodgers Omedwa also ensured the Venoms do not get an early lead.

However, the custodian had no answer in the 32nd minute. Disan Galiwango's cross was met by Ibrahim Orit and the forward headed it in. It would have been 2-0 before the break but Manzoki, surprisingly, missed an open goal after skyrocketing his effort.

However, he made amends a minute after the break when he connected Galiwango's cross.

The third goal came with two minutes to the break when the Congolese, once again, hit the back of the net when he converted a Dan Sserunkuma cross.

Wakiso Giants also defeated Water 2-1; the minnows were the first to score courtesy of William Kiibi.

In the stroke of half-time, Wakiso levelled through Tom Masiko from the penalty spot before he completed his brace 10 minutes after the restart.

Monday Uganda Cup results:
SC Villa 01 Ndejje University
Onduparaka FC 0-0 Luwero United
Terrazzo Tiles 1-1 Maroons
Vipers SC 3-0 Busoga United
Water 1-2 Wakiso Giants
Police 5-0 Calvary

Nigeria star Onuachu scores goal no. 26 in First Division A as Genk win five-goal thriller

The Super Eagles striker continued his fine goalscoring form with another goal at the Den Dreef on Monday afternoon

Nigeria forward Paul Onuachu extended his dominance in the Belgian First Division A goalscoring chart with a goal in Genk's 3-2 victory over OH Leuven on Monday.

Onuachu’s late effort at Den Dreef took his tally to 26 goals after 31 league appearances – 28 goals in total this season (including two Cup goals) which makes him the highest scoring Super Eagles star in Europe so far this term.

The 26-year-old is enjoying his best season in front of goal since he kicked off his professional career in the Danish Superliga with Midtjylland nine years ago.

Over a week ago, Onuachu made a statement in Nigeria's national team during the just-concluded international break after scoring a goal each in their last two 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin and Lesotho.

He scored the late match-winning goal in the Super Eagles’ 1-0 of Benin in Porto-Novo and later sealed their 3-0 triumph over Lesotho in Lagos last Tuesday.

Onuachu’s heroics did not end with the international break as he scored what turned out to be the winning goal for Genk in Monday’s outing.

The former Midtjylland striker sealed maximum points for the visitors in Heverlee after goals from Kristian Thorstvedt, Theo Bongonda had put them ahead.

The Nigeria striker did not finish the encounter as he was replaced in the 89th minute by his compatriot Cyril Dessers - who has scored four goals in 26 league games this term.

Despite the victory, Genk remain unmoved in the third spot with 53 points after 32 matches. They are a point behind second-placed Royal Antwerp and 20 points behind runaway leaders Club Brugge.

Onuachu will be expected to maintain his fine scoring form when the Smurfs host 15th-placed Sint-Truiden at the Luminus Arena on April 11.

Aheebwa: Mbarara City defender set to be out after sustaining injury against Wakiso Giants

The centre-back is expected to return after about four weeks to help the team achieve their targets

Uganda Premier League side Mbarara City FC will have to do without the services of defender Jasper Aheebwa who is nursing a knee injury.

The club has confirmed the new development, confirming the player will need a month to return to fitness. The centre-back was injured in the recent win over Wakiso Giants in the top-tier assignment.

"Jasper Aheebwa has undergone a scan to his right knee after getting a knock in our previous league game," the club confirmed on Monday.

"Jasper will now undergo a month of recovery and rehabilitation. He is expected back in early May. Quickest recovery 'Lion'."

In the Friday game at the Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium, Tom Masiko scored the opener for the Purple Sharks in the fourth minute before Henry Kitengenyi equalised for the visitors in the 40th minute.

Mbarara City then won a penalty in the 85th minute which was successfully converted by Solomon Okwalinga. They are placed in the 11th position with 17 points from the 16 games played. They have managed four wins, five draws, and seven losses.

Dodi have further scored 14 goals and conceded 21.

Meanwhile, Kyetume FC have appointed Jackson Mayanja as their new coach, effective immediately.

The Mukono-based charges have not been performing well and have gone on to register six straight defeats in the top-tier.

It is for this reason the club opted to demote Alex Isabirye, who had taken over from Charles Livingstone Mbabazi, and gave a chance to Cranes legend Mayanja to help the team get back to winning ways.

Mayanja has initially served the team as the head coach in the Fufa Big League with Allan Kabonge, before being promoted to work as the club's technical director.

He will be aiming at helping the team perform well, having collected just 12 points from 16 UPL matches played in the ongoing campaign.

Their most recent result was a 3-0 loss to 2005 league champions Police FC at the Fufa Technical Centre in Njeru on Saturday.

Muhamood Hassan scored the Cops' first goal after 11 minutes and ensured the Abdallah Mubiru-led charges led 1-0 at half-time.

After the pause, Ben Ocen converted from the penalty spot to make it 2-0 in favour of the former champions. The third goal came with five minutes to go from Brian Mayanha, who scored from a penalty as well.

Kaizer Chiefs' victories over Orlando Pirates and Wydad Casablanca have given us a winning mentality - Castro

In a season they are struggling for consistency, Amakhosi have managed to record two important victories recently as they now resume domestic business

Kaizer Chiefs forward Leonardo Castro says it is "a positive thing" that they beat Orlando Pirates and Wydad Casablanca in their last two matches ahead of Tuesday's Premier Soccer League hosting of Stellenbosch.

Chiefs welcome Stellenbosch as they seek to improve from ninth spot on the PSL standings after beating Pirates 1-0 in their last league game on March 21.

That was followed up by a 1-0 win over Wydad on Saturday, impressively with nine men, as they kept alive their hopes of reaching the Caf Champions League quarter-finals.

Castro underlines the importance of their last two results, saying they have earned a "winning mentality" from those games amid a season where Chiefs have been struggling.

“We all know Stellenbosch is a tough team. We need to focus on ourselves and we need to keep the good mentality that we have developed over the last few games," Castro told the Chiefs website.

"It’s going to help us and encourage us for the clash against Stellies. These wins have given us a winning mentality. It’s a positive thing for us to have won these matches, so now we can go into this week’s games with confidence – hopefully, we get the results we want.

“The next game is another ‘final’, so we have to take it. We have to win the game so we can improve from our last performance. We need to take each and every game with responsibility so we can finish the season in good shape. I am available for the team in case the coach wants to use me. I am ready and eager to go. I want to contribute and give my best.”

Castro was on the bench against Wydad as he returned from injury but missed the Pirates game.

After meeting Stellenbosch, Chiefs then travel to Guinea for their final Champions League group game against Horoya in what would be a must-win.

To reach the Champions League last-eight, Amakhosi need to beat Horoya with whom they share eight points in Group C.

Luc Eymael: Belgian coach joins Chippa United after Dan Malesela sacking

Four months after being blocked from working in South Africa, the former Free State Stars, Polokwane and Black Leopards coach has a job in the PSL

Chippa United have appointed Luc Eymael as their technical advisor following the sacking of Dan Malesela.

The club confirmed the departure of Malesela while former assistant coach Siyabulela Gwambi has been elevated to the role of interim head coach.

Malesela's job ended following Saturday's 5-1 defeat by Maritzburg United in what was the Chilli Boys' eighth successive Premier Soccer League match without tasting victory.

Eymael now leads their technical team set-up, four months after he was barred from Chippa's head coach position due to a racism incident which occured in Tanzania while he was the coach of Young Africans.

"Chippa United Football Club would like to announce that it has reached an amicable decision to part ways with Dan Malesela, with this decision effective immediately," Chippa United announced on Monday.

"We would like to thank Mr Malesela for his contribution to the club and to wish him well in his future endeavours. Siyabulela Gwambi, the side's assistance coach, will take over the head coach responsibilities on an interim basis. We would like to wish him well on this appointment, where the club objectives are on improving the current DStv Premiership log standings and on also reaching the prestigious Nedbank Cup final.

"The club has also appointed well-travelled Belgian, Luc Eymael, in a Technical Advisor role where he will play an integral mentorship role for the technical team. Mr Gwambi, who is from Zwide, has been a part of the club coaching structures since 2015.

"He was promoted to the senior team having coached in the team's youth structures and the Diski Challenge team. It is the club's intent to have Mr Eymael forming part of the technical team. This is subject to consultations with our partners, sponsors and supporters.

"We have also sought necessary clearances from the SA Football Association on his appointment. Chilli Boys’ next fixture is against Mamelodi Sundowns at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in East London next Monday, 12 April"

In December 2020, Safa had blocked the appointment of Eymael as Chippa United coach after the Tanzania incident and the Belgian took up the matter with Fifa.

Chippa are currently four points better than basement side Black Leopards.

Aubameyang a far worse team player than Vardy and Aguero - Arsenal star slammed after display vs Liverpool

The Gabonese star struggled to make an impact as the Gunners bowed to Jurgen Klopp's men at the Emirates Stadium

Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has slammed Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for not being a team player and for his lack of impact in the Gunners' 3-0 loss to Liverpool.

Aubameyang struggled to make attacking contributions for Mikel Arteta's side as Diogo Jota's double and Mohamed Salah's strike condemned the hosts to a disappointing defeat in North London.

During Saturday’s Premier League game, the 2015 African Footballer of the Year did not register a single shot, did not win an aerial duel but he won two tackles and made three clearances - second-highest for Arsenal.

Cascarino, in his assessment, likened the Gunners captain to be a ‘second Mesut Ozil’ after he failed to impress up front.

“Aubameyang was nearly playing behind Tierney,” the 58-year-old told talkSport.

“He does frustrate me anyway because I do think he’s one of those players where I look at him and think ‘your numbers, are they an illusion?’ Because that is the only argument.

“He reminds me of a second [Mesut] Ozil where it’s going. He’s 31 years old, he’s 32 in June.

“I remember having a conversation about Aubameyang and the only debate and why you always get concerned about being critical of him, his numbers tell you he’s a great striker and gets lots of goals but to me, I just don’t see a team player there. I just don’t.”

The former Chelsea and Marseille star further rated the Gabon international as the ‘worst team player’ among other top goalscorers despite his impressive goal ratio in previous seasons.

Aubameyang has scored 14 goals in all competitions this season, including nine goals in 25 Premier League appearances so far.

“Christophe Galtier at Lille, he’s the manager. I was with him at Marseille. He had Aubameyang at Saint-Etienne and his goal ratio was one in two or close to one in two,” Cascarino continued.

“He played at Monaco, he played for a few French clubs in his career and there has always been a bit of a myth about him, I say a myth but, a lot of people have never quite known [about him], well, everyone knows he’s a great goalscorer. He always gets a good return but they have never quite known how good of a player he really is.

“I think he’s, how do I say this, the numbers guy with the best goal stats, or one of the best, but he’s actually the worst player than a lot of other goalscorers.

“You get all these goalscorers, like [Sergio] Aguero gets goals and [Jamie] Vardy gets goals, and many others but I think he’s a far worse team player than any of them.”

Arteta must drop Aubameyang and recall Martinelli for Arsenal, claims Keown

The former Gunners defender believes the underperforming club captain needs to be replaced by a youngster who is “too good to be sitting on the bench”

Mikel Arteta risks losing the respect of his Arsenal squad if underperforming Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is not dropped says Martin Keown, with the Gunners boss being urged to bring Gabriel Martinelli back in from the cold.

Another uninspiring performance was delivered by the north London heavyweights last time out, with Liverpool leaving Emirates Stadium with a comfortable 3-0 win.

Aubameyang offered little in that contest, and Keown believes big decisions now need to be taken with the club captain and the Brazilian teenager.

What has been said?

Former Gunners defender Keown told the Daily Mail: “Arteta has a big decision to make on his captain. He set an example by dropping Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for the north London derby recently. Aubameyang was supposed to start against Spurs but turned up late and was pulled.

“Should Arteta not be dropping him for performing as poorly as he did against Liverpool? If he sticks with him, he risks losing the respect of the group.

“It’s time to bring in 19-year-old Gabriel Martinelli. He is too good to be sitting on the bench. His team-mates see him in training and know what he can do. They will be baffled by his continued absence. I know I am.

“Use him on the left. Use Martinelli’s fellow 19-year-old Bukayo Saka on the right. Start Emile Smith Rowe. Then you’ll have a team who can pose problems for the opposition. There were too many passengers against Liverpool.

“They had Aubameyang on the left, Alexandre Lacazette central and Nicolas Pepe on the right - three club-record signings - but they missed the energy and drive of Smith Rowe and Saka.

“There is no time for Arsenal’s players to feel sorry for themselves. They need to bounce back against a Prague side who have knocked Leicester and Rangers out of the Europa League.

“Arteta has big decisions to make - ones he needs to get right.”

Aubameyang’s form in 2020-21

The Gabonese frontman committed to a lucrative new contract early on in the current campaign, but has offered little return on that show of faith. He has found the target on 14 occasions this season, but more was expected from the 31-year-old frontman who has drawn a blank in his last four appearances.

What about Martinelli?

The promising South American enjoyed a productive debut campaign with the Gunners in 2019-20 before being cut down by injury.

Shaking off knocks has proved difficult, but the 19-year-old is now ready to go.

Arteta has opted against giving the youngster regular game time with his last start coming against Manchester United on January 30 – when he was hauled off at half-time.

Zidane not looking to copy Klopp’s blueprint for success after delivering plenty of his own at Real Madrid

The Frenchman has landed more major silverware during a second stint as coach at Santiago Bernabeu, but is always looking to learn

Zinedine Zidane is always open to learning lessons from fellow managers, but the Real Madrid boss insists he will not be looking to “copy” the blueprint for success drawn up by Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp.

The Frenchman is due to lock horns with a highly-rated German tactician on Tuesday, with a heavyweight contest lined up between two multiple Champions League winners at the quarter-final stage of this season’s competition.

Zidane has delivered that particular trophy to Santiago Bernabeu on three occasions, along with a couple of La Liga titles, and sees no reason to emulate the methods of a rival who has achieved domestic and continental success with a Premier League giant.

What has been said?

Quizzed at a pre-match press conference on whether he will be looking to replicate any of Klopp’s traits in his own coaching career, Zidane said: “He’s a great coach and an experienced coach. The work he has done in all his career has been good and now with Liverpool.

“I don’t need to copy him and he doesn’t need to copy me, but I do look at all coaches to see what they do. In particular, I saw a lot things from other coaches when I was doing my coaching course.”

Fitness update

Zidane was also asked again about the fitness of Eden Hazard, with the Belgian forward preparing to make his latest return from a niggling knock.

The Blancos boss said of a player who has struggled to make his mark on the back of securing a big-money switch to Spain in 2019: “The important thing is that he is fully recovered when he comes back, although I don’t think he was rushed back last time.

“We never rush a player. We’ll see when Eden can recover.”

The bigger picture

Real are determined to edge out Liverpool, a side they overcame in the 2018 Champions League final, and keep themselves on course for a 14th European triumph.

There is also a determination on the part of everyone at the Bernabeu to chase down arch-rivals Atletico Madrid, seeing off Barcelona in the process, and defend a La Liga title.

With two major prizes still up for grabs, Zidane was asked if his team were written off by some too early in what has been a testing campaign at times.

The 1998 World Cup winner said: “I think the answer is yes.

“I have a lot of confidence in my team. So yes, but we can’t change that. We can just do our work every day. That’s how this team has been able to turn things around.

“We never give up. As long as there’s hope, we’re alive in both competitions and will keep battling. “We’ve had bad moments and now we’re in a good moment, but all of that means nothing yet since we’ve not won anything yet.”

Zaha knows ‘where he wants to be’ as Crystal Palace brace themselves for summer bids

Eagles boss Roy Hodgson is hoping to see the fit-again winger shine in the remainder of 2020-21 before then making a big decision on his future

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson admits Wilfried Zaha knows “where he wants to be” as transfer talk starts to ramp up again ahead of the summer transfer window.

The highly-rated Ivory Coast international believed a move away from Selhurst Park was on the cards in 2019, with Arsenal leading the chase for his signature, but no deal was done.

Zaha has remained loyal to the Eagles since then, registering another nine goals this season in what has been an injury-hit campaign, but he has made no secret of a desire to test himself at a higher level.

What has been said?

Hodgson concedes that a big career call for the 28-year-old forward is fast approaching, telling reporters of Zaha ahead of a Premier League clash with Everton on Monday: “He’s been very good.

“He’s missed more games through injury than in previous years which is a blow for us, but we’re hoping to keep him fit for the next nine.

“He seems to be pretty much clear at the moment as to what he wants to do and where he wants to be. We’re hoping to benefit from that in the next nine games.

“At the end of the season, we’ll see what happens then.”

Who has been linked with Zaha?

Clubs from across Europe are said to have been shooting admiring glances in the direction of a man who secured a high-profile switch to Manchester United in 2013.

That move did not work out as planned, but Zaha is a more rounded and mature performer than he was when heading to Old Trafford.

Many consider him to be deserving of a Champions League stage, and those opportunities may soon be presented.

Borussia Dortmund have been linked with a raid on Palace for Zaha, while Monaco are also said to be keen.

Any number of Premier League sides could also decide to join a bidding war if one is sparked, with Everton reported to be one of the most likely to make a move.

The bigger picture

Palace have Zaha tied to a contract through to the summer of 2023, so are under no pressure to sell.

They will be able to demand the best possible price from any deal involving a prized asset, with there no chance of the Ivorian being allowed to leave on the cheap just because he would like to take on a new challenge.

'Fake news travels quick and far' - Raiola hits back at Haaland reports amid Barcelona and Real Madrid transfer talk

The super-agent has responded to the rumours surrounding his client's future at Borussia Dortmund

Mino Raiola has hit back at reports regarding Erling Haaland's future on social media.

A whole host of top clubs have been credited with an interest in Haaland, who has enjoyed a rapid rise to stardom since joining Borussia Dortmund from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020.

The striker's father Alf-Inge and Raiola were spotted holding talks with Barcelona and Real Madrid officials last week, and it has been reported that they will also sit down with potential suitors from the Premier League, but the super-agent has moved to try and quash the ongoing speculation.

What's been said?

Raiola took to Twitter to respond to the transfer rumours, uploading a video of various Haaland-related reports with the word "fake" emblazoned multiple times. The 53-year-old captioned the post with: "Fake news travels quick and far."

What else has Raiola said about Haaland?

Raiola has admitted that he jumped the gun when brokering the deal which saw Haaland join Dortmund, with it his belief that the Norwegian could have fit in at any of Europe's elite clubs after leaving Salzburg.

"Haaland is in front of his own development," he said. "He is ahead of his own schedule. Maybe I was too careful when I said, ‘Oh no, let’s move to Dortmund instead of I-don’t-know-where’.

“This boy - I’m 100 per cent convinced and everybody’s convinced - can move to any club, wherever he wants, already on this level. He could have done that last year."

Why is Haaland in such high demand?

Robert Lewandowski, Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Kane have been as prolific as ever for their respective clubs this season, but Haaland is a far younger prospect with plenty of room still to improve.

The 20-year-old has hit 33 goals in 32 games across all competitions for Dortmund this term, including 21 in the Bundesliga and 10 in the Champions League - four ahead of anyone in else on Europe's biggest stage.

Onyango: We will fight to help Simba SC achieve set targets

The former Gor Mahia player promises to fight for the Msimbazi giants until they achieve their set targets for the season

Kenya defender Joash Onyango has vowed to do his best and help Simba SC to achieve their set targets for the 2020-21 season.

The Msimbazi giants are currently competing in three major competitions – Mainland Premier League, domestic Cup, and the Caf Champions League – and according to the former Gor Mahia star, they will make sure they fight for everything on offer.

The burly defender was speaking moments after being crowned the best player for Simba in the month of March, an award he became the second recipient after Mozambican winger Luis Miquissone, who had won the inaugural gong in February.

The award is an initiative from the Msimbazi giants’ fans, is sponsored by Emirate Aluminum Profile company, and will see players rewarded for their efforts every month.

Onyango secured the award after beating the first-choice goalkeeper Aishi Manula and Miquissone in the votes cast by the fans - of a total of 25,719 votes cast, the defender managed 20,288.

Tanzania keeper Manula, who is being linked with a transfer to Sudanese outfit Al Merrikh, came second after garnering 4,673 while Miquissone managed 758 to finish third.

“I want to thank the fans for recognising the efforts I am putting up for the club,” Onyango told Simba's official website after receiving the trophy and prize money of Tsh1, 000, 000 on Monday.

“The fans have clearly shown they love what I am doing here by giving me a lot of votes and I also want to thank sponsors Emirate Aluminium for giving me this award.

“I want to assure our fans I will do my best to make sure the team achieves some of the targets we set when the new season kicked-off, I also want to assure them we will fight as a team, we know we made a promise to them and we will make sure it is achieved.

“I also want to thank my teammates for this award, without them, I could not have achieved the win, we always play as a team and the award will give me the much-needed desire to continue to fight for the team.”

On Saturday, Simba progressed to the quarter-finals of the Champions League and speaking to Goal after beating AS Vita Club of the Democratic Republic of the Congo 4-1 at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, Onyango said he was delighted to achieve the feat, something he could not do while at Gor Mahia.

“It feels good to advance to the next stage of the competition and being my first time it is special," Onyango told Goal.

“Getting in the latter stages of the competition guarantees you a chance to play against the best teams in the continent. As a player, I have an opportunity to play against the best players as well.

“We are happy to have secured our place in the last eight, but we know we have a job to finish when we will play the defending champions Al Ahly.”

The 28-year-old, however, admitted he was hurt by the goal they conceded against the DR Congo side despite a healthy win.

“Our target as defenders was to ensure we finish the group stage with a clean sheet," Onyango revealed.

“However, it did not happen and we feel disappointed for not achieving our target. But everyone played well, it was a deserved win for us and now we can start preparations for the next assignment.”

Simba will conclude their group matches with a clash against Al Ahly of Egypt on April 9 in Cairo.

The clash is a dead rubber, with both teams already secured of qualification for the last eight while the Tanzanians have an unassailable five-point lead at the top of the Group A table.

NXGN and Borussia Dortmund star Moukoko ruled out for the season with foot ligament injury

The 16-year-old striking sensation will not be seen again in the 2020-21 campaign after picking up an untimely knock

Borussia Dortmund teen sensation Youssoufa Moukoko has had his 2020-21 campaign brought to a premature conclusion after picking up a foot injury.

The 16-year-old has damaged ligaments and will not be available for the remainder of the Bundesliga season.

The injury has prevented him from making more history with Germany, as he had been due to become the youngest player to represent Germany’s U21 side during the recent international break.

What has been said?

Germany U21 coach Stefan Kuntz told reporters last month: “The injury is worse than initially feared. We have to let the healing process run its course.”

His club have now confirmed that they injury will keep Moukoko out until the summer.

Dortmund said on social media: “Youssoufa Moukoko is out for the rest of the season with a ligament injury in his foot. Get well soon.”

Which games with Moukoko miss?

A Champions League quarter-final showdown with Manchester City is next up for Dortmund, who visit the Premier League leaders on Tuesday.

They also have a DFB-Pokal semi-final meeting with Holstein Kiel on May 1, which will offer Dortmund a shot at another cup final appearance.

There are also another seven Bundesliga fixtures left, with an alarming dip in form meaning that a top-four finish is far from guaranteed.

Moukoko’s efforts in 2020-21

Despite seeing his season cut short by an injury picked up in training, the youngster has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign.

Records have tumbled around him on a regular basis, with prolific exploits at youth level seeing him presented with senior opportunities. He made his Dortmund debut at just 16 and has scored three times for the senior side.

He has become Dortmund’s youngest debutant and goalscorer, with his account iopened against Union Berlin.

His potential was noted in Goal’s NXGN countdown for 2021, with Moukoko sitting 15th on the list of global wonderkids.
