All the EURO finals hat-tricks: David Villa, Marco van Basten and more

The 5-0 loss to Liverpool was the joint-worst defeat in Ronaldo's career....

Manchester United's Premier League clash against rivals Liverpool turned out to be a nightmare for the Red Devils and Cristiano Ronaldo as they suffered a thumping 5-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

Liverpool took a four-goal lead in the first itself and then further increased their tally in the 50th minute to pile on Manchester United's misery. Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah netted a hat-trick and Naby Keita and Diogo Jota scored the other two goals.

The last time Ronaldo faced Liverpool as a Manchester United player, his team lost 4-1 to the Reds at the Old Trafford. It was an evening that Cristiano Ronaldo would like to forget as the defeat is the joint-worst result in his two-decade-long career. Only once before had a Cristiano Ronaldo lost 5-0 in club football which was back in 2010 when Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid lost to rivals FC Barcelona.

Only on eight occasions in the past, a Cristiano Ronaldo team conceded four or more goals at the club level and in international football. Interestingly, only time Ronaldo's team conceded more than six goals was when Portugal lost 6-2 to Brazil in an international friendly back in 2008.

Here, we take a look at the 10 worst results in Cristiano Ronaldo's career. In these 10 losing causes, Ronaldo managed to score only on three occasions.

Kaizer Chiefs have no midfield, Agay not a footballer - Khanye

Amakhosi posted a second victory on the trot for the first time this season but an ex-player is not impressed

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye is concerned the Soweto giants are struggling to take control of the games despite winning some of them.

Sunday’s 2-1 Premier Soccer League victory over SuperSport United came on the backdrop of a 4-0 win over Chippa United the previous weekend but Khanye is not pleased by Chiefs’ showing, especially in midfield.

Coach Stuart Baxter started Njabulo Ngcobo, Phathutshedzo Nange and Anthony Akumu Agay in the middle of the park before introducing Kearyn Baccus, and Khanye feels the linkmen had little influence in the game.

“Chiefs coach must talk to his midfielders. Alexander Cole is there but for me, Agay is a no. Yes he played today [Sunday] but he is not a footballer,” said Khanye on iDiski TV.

“If there is something I want to see it is Chiefs dominating when they win. They cannot be dominated. Now the difference is that they are scoring. They are dominated by each and every team which plays against them.

“Baxter plays transition football and that is just one style he employs. The fact remains that Chiefs do not have a midfield. I still want to see them building up from the back, creating chances by combining in midfield until the ball gets upfront.

“I will give an example of Sundowns who build up and you can go behind them but they will come back and break you. I want Chiefs to do the same, play at the back and if the opponents come at them then their midfielders show up.”

While blasting Chiefs’ midfield, Khanye says the shortcomings in the middle were covered up by the team’s attack, especially the Khama Billiat-Keagan Dolly partnership.

Bernard Parker grabbed a brace which handed Amakhosi victory but Khanye is not convinced the veteran forward can consistently reproduce that performance.

“I also want to see some individual brilliance but at the moment it is only two players [Billiat and Dolly] who are making the difference in every game. Parker, yes today he made the difference but the question is if he will be consistent,” Khanye added.

“Chiefs were tactically disciplined at the back but the midfield was nowhere to be seen and then three players upfront made the difference, Bernard Parker, Keagan Dolly and Khama Billiat. Both SuperSport and Chiefs played a similar brand of football. But three players made the difference with some individual brilliance.

“They were arrogant on the ball, especially Khama. He knows his football that one, you can tell and Keagan is complimenting him. They are making a lot of difference. A person who doesn’t know football will think the whole team played. Parker only came to the party today but Keagan and Khama know football.”

Chiefs now prepare to host Stellenbosch at home in their next league match on November 2.

Nigerians to watch this weekend

The country's football chief hinted that the Anglo-Nigerian is close to committing his international future to the three-time African champions

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF)  Amaju Pinnick confirmed that Leicester City forward Ademola Lookman has started the process of switching his international allegiance from England to the Super Eagles.

Pinnick revealed some of his conversation with Lookman when he visited the RB Leipzig loanee and selected other Nigerian players in the UK over the weekend.

Lookman, born to Nigerian parents in England, has played for the European country's youth teams and he is now focused on being a part of Gernot Rohr’s squad.

The Fifa Council member also disclosed that the Super Eagles are working to get Al Shabab striker Odion Ighalo back in the national team after he announced his international retirement at the end of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

“I spoke extensively with Alex Iwobi, who cannot wait to feature in those all-important games,” Pinnick wrote on Instagram.

“Ademola Lookman is excited about fighting for a shirt in the Super Eagles. He loves Nigeria. By His Grace we shall conclude the switch very soon.

“I had a long conversation with Odion Ighalo, personally I believe we need experience in our attack to combine with our energetic youthful Osimhen, Onuachu, Kelechi et al.

"Odion's body language is very positive. We are also in touch with his agents and club.

“The vibe going into these last two games and indeed Afcon is very good.”

Pinnick further revealed that he met Lookman’s teammates Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho and he gave a positive update on the combative midfielder’s fitness as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury.

“I spent quality time with Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Ihenacho in Leicester over the weekend. I went with my wife and three of my kids who are on half-term break,” he added.

“Our visit was a mere family visit and not official. Recall Wilfred is recuperating from an injury that has kept him out for about five weeks, being a very key player for the Super Eagles, we cannot afford to toy with our last two games.

“Ndidi has been integral, committed and passionate member of the Super Eagles. The good news is that his second scan came out very good so he starts training with his club and possibly play in their next game.

"His wife, Dinma was a wonderful host, their little daughter, adorable. Kelechi joined us almost immediately and made us to laugh till we left. Thanks to Wilfred & Kelechi, my family truly appreciate you.”

He also visited Watford star Oghenekaro Etebo, who went under the knife to treat his ruptured thigh muscle earlier this month.

Etebo is back in Nigeria and Pinnick left some encouraging words for the midfielder, who is likely to miss the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon in January.

“I also paid a visit to Oghenekaro Etebo, in Warri, we call him 'Afaras',” he continued.

“He is also recuperating very well but definitely cannot make the next two World Cup qualifiers, Nations Cup might also be a doubt, importantly he should heal 100% by His Grace and rejoin the team.

“His family was quite warm and pleasant. We had quality time together and understood every language uttered as 2 proud Warri 'boys'. He is in a great spirit with the right mental state of mind.”

Fran Kirby's ultimate battle: How the Chelsea women's star beat heart disease to get back to the top

The Gunners captain proved instrumental to his side's Premier League victory over Aston Villa last week and his boss feels he can lead their revival

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has taken "a step forward" in his role at Arsenal, says Mikel Arteta, who believes that the new-look forward can help the club recapture their winning mentality.

The Gunners captain proved instrumental to his side's Premier League victory over Aston Villa last week, netting the second of their finishes in a 3-1 triumph at the Emirates Stadium.

It is a signal that the Gabon international has turned the page after a difficult campaign last term - and his manager says that he is delighted with his skipper's increased visibility and leadership.

What has been said?

"I have never seen Auba transmit what he is doing now," Arteta told the club's official website. "Apart from the goals, the celebration when they put the ball in the net, do you see the way he runs?

"The purpose he has to press the ball, and [...] how is leading the game. I prefer this Auba. For me it is a click. It is a combination that realising that his role has to go well beyond [what is was].

"He had to take a step forward. I would say the same with Laca [Alexandre Lacazette]. They lead by example and not only there but as well at the training ground.

Arteta hails elder statesman role

In addition to Aubameyang and Lacazette, the Spaniard further paid tribute to Thomas Partey, with the trio of them praised for how they can help the squad's younger stars build their potential.

"The group age [of the squad] is a little bit closer so they are experiencing most of the same things and they talk a lot about it," he added.

"Then we have the senior players that they have to lead and they have to take that role, and they are doing that in a different way.

"Leading is not telling someone what he needs to do, for me it is being able to transform that person and not just with words, but with facts as well.

"There are players now that on that pitch that they are able to transmit something and change certain behaviours and attitudes in other players. That is contagious, and for me that is leadership."

Lyon appoint Bompastor after UWCL exit

Despite eclipsing the Chelsea legend’s mark, the ex-Nigeria striker does not see the Egyptian as the greatest African to grace the English top-flight

Mohamed Salah has not yet eclipsed Chelsea legend Didier Drogba when it comes to naming the greatest African in Premier League history, according to Nigerian football icon Yakubu Ayegbeni.

The Egypt international’s hat-trick in Liverpool’s 5-0 decimation of Manchester United saw him overtake the Ivorian to become the highest-scoring African player in the Premier League with 107 goals.

His treble against the Red Devils at Old Trafford saw him match Fred Howe’s record that has stood for 85 years.

Regardless, the former Everton and Middlesbrough goal machine does not see the rationale for considering the 29-year-old as the best African to have graced the English top-flight – although the ‘Yak’ marvelled at the ex-AS Roma star’s exploits in Jurgen Klopp’s squad so far.

“You cannot say Salah is the greatest African to play in the Premier League. Drogba was something special because he was scoring for fun,” Ayegbeni told Goal.

“However, you have to give Salah the credit for breaking the big legend’s record, which makes him one of the greatest Africans in the English top-flight, but for now, he is certainly not the greatest.”

Having impressed at Swiss top-flight side FC Basel, the two-time African Player of the Year joined Chelsea on January 23, 2014, for a fee reported to be in the region of £11 million.

Notwithstanding, he failed to break into the Blues’ first-team – leading to loan spells in Italy before his return to England in 2017.

Ayegbeni explained why the Reds star struggled in London and how that experience has moulded him into a goalscoring machine.

“When he came to Chelsea, he was quite young and was unable was shine because the Blues had several top stars at that time,” he continued.

“That was why he left for Fiorentina before moving to AS Roma. He did well in Italy, and he was signed by Liverpool.

“I think what is working for him now is that he understands the Premier League better than before. Also, his experiences outside England have been valuable for him.

“All the same, we have to applaud the Egyptian for his fine form because it is not easy to play the way he is doing that right now – which is incredible.”

With nine goals in his last seven league matches, the Ballon d'Or nominee would be hoping to continue his inspiring form in front of goal when the Anfield giants square up against Brighton and Hove Albion on October 30.

Sergio Busquets confirms retirement from international football

The Togo international was given the marching orders as the Deep Blue Ones continue their poor run in the Spanish topflight

Dakonam Djene was shown the red card in Getafe’s 3-0 home defeat to Celta Vigo in Monday’s La Liga outing.

Following a harsh tackle on two-goal hero Santi Mina in the 63rd minute, the Togo international was given the marching orders by referee Jose Munuera after consulting VAR.

No player has been sent off more times than the 29-year-old with Getafe in the top five European leagues in the last five seasons alongside Clement Lenglet with Barcelona and Andrei Girotto with FC Nantes.

Having failed to win any of all nine league matches played in the 2021-22 campaign, the Deep Blue Ones welcomed the Sky Blues to the Coliseum Alfonso Perez with the aspiration of ending their poor run.

However, that ended on a sour note as Eduardo Coudet’s men sealed all three points thanks to an imposing second-half display.

The game got off to a tough start but it was the visitors who dictated the pace, albeit, their only opportunity was not converted as Nolito’s tame shot was saved by goalkeeper David Soria.

Earlier in the first 45 minutes, Mauro Arambarri had squandered a great chance to put the home team in front to the frustration of manager Quique Sanchez Flores.

Celta Vigo broke the deadlock in the 55th minute after heading past goalkeeper Soria a delightful corner kick by Brais Mendez.

Three minutes later, Iago Aspas doubled the advantage – ghosting past Getafe’s backline to slot home Mendez’s cross.

Unfortunately, the home team’s ambition of achieving a comeback suffered a massive setback following the expulsion of Djene.

Profiting from the numerical advantage, Mina completed his double 17 minutes from full time.

Cameroon international Allan Nyom and teenage Ghanaian defender Amankwaa Akurugu were unused substitutes for Getafe.

On the other hand, Joseph Aidoo was handed a starter’s role by Celta Vigo but he was subbed off for, however, he was substituted for Mexico international Nestor Araujo in the 67th minute.

Thanks to this away triumph, Coudet’s men moved to 14th in the Spanish elite division log having accrued 10 points from ten matches played.

They would be hoping to consolidate on that result when they welcome Real Sociedad to the Estadio Municipal de Balaidos on October 28.

England to meet Spain in Euro U21 final

Randy Waldrum’s women bowed to the Black Queens in Sunday’s qualifiers, nonetheless, the veteran tactician feels there is no cause for alarm

Nigeria's women’s senior national team remains a strong force in African football despite losing to Ghana 1-0 in Sunday’s African Women’s Cup of Nations qualifier, according to coach Samson Unuanel.

The Super Falcons took a two-goal advantage to Accra for the first round second leg qualifier, but they were caged by Merce Tagoe’s Black Queens with Princella Adubea scoring the only goal.

Despite the result, the reigning African queens advanced to the next round of qualifiers for Morocco 2022 Awcon.

The loss to Ghana has continued to generate contrasting opinions from the football sphere, with some claiming Randy Waldrum’s women are the best on the continent at the moment.

Nonetheless, the former Sunshine Stars and Enyimba tactician feels otherwise: “Other teams in Africa are really working very hard to dethrone Nigeria,” Unuanel told Goal.

“Despite the result, they remain a superpower in Africa. This is really nothing to fret about.

“This is not the time to condemn the Super Falcons for their defeat to Ghana, but a time to encourage the team to do better next time.

“Let me add that in football, you don’t win all the time. You win some and lose some. To be honest with you, they are making progress.”

Nigeria square up against Cote d’Ivoire in the next round of qualifiers and the veteran coach suggests what should be done to scale the Women Elephants’ hurdle.

“Coach Waldrum has been with the team for months now, so he certainly knows the problems as seen in the matches against Ghana,” he continued.

“His immediate assignment is how to work on the lapses to avoid a repeat against Cote d’Ivoire.

“Timely and good preparations are part of what the Falcons need as we have the talent and the NFF that is ready to give everything to make the ladies excel.

“If they work hard too, they will not only qualify for the competition. They will also rule Africa again.

“That being said, we should not forget that football is not mathematics. It’s about getting back whatever you put in.”

Since the inception of the biennial African championship in 1991, Nigeria have won the competition a record 11 times.

Geremi rates Real Madrid boss Zidane as ‘best coach in the world’

The U.S. forward was impressed by 78-year-old Mick Jagger's boundless energy on stage

Carli Lloyd joked that seeing the Rolling Stones perform live prior to her final game for the U.S. national team has made her reconsider her retirement plans.

Lloyd and her team-mates saw the legendary band perform in Minneapolis on Sunday night ahead of Tuesday's game against South Korea in neighboring St. Paul.

The 39-year-old will earn her 316th and final cap against South Korea, and will end her playing career following the conclusion of the current NWSL season.

What was said?

"Throughout my career I've just wanted to be the best soccer player that I could be," Lloyd said. "I've often missed out on going to do things for fun. I'm not missing out on anything now, and I was really happy that I decided to go see the Rolling Stones live. They were unbelievable.

"They sort of make me feel like I should keep playing! Mick [Jagger] running down the stage at the age of 78 and performing the way that he did was pretty incredible.

"They were unbelievable. I know that it wasn't really my era growing up watching them, but an unbelievable bucket list [item] to cross off to be able to see them perform."

Pictures on social media after the concertshowed Lloyd and team-mates Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe meeting Jagger and Keith Richards backstage.

"Alex, Megan and I got to meet them," Lloyd added. "It was really cool. Definitely one of my top favorite moments."

A legendary career

Much like the Stones, Lloyd has racked up plenty of accolades over a long and successful career.

Lloyd scored the winner in two Olympic gold medal finals as well as a memorable hat-trick against Japan in the 2015 World Cup final. She was also part of the 2019 World Cup-winning squad.

Lloyd has been named the FIFA women's world player of the year twice in her storied career.

Kieran Trippier ready to hold out for move to Manchester United

The Phobians have addressed their fans after a poor showing in the continental inter-club competition

Hearts of Oak have issued a statement apologising for their embarrassing defeat to Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in the Caf Champions League on Sunday.

In their first continental inter-club away game since 2015, the Phobians were at sixes and sevens as they were handed a 6-1 thrashing in the first round, second leg fixture.

Having registered a slim 1-0 home win in the first leg in Accra, Hearts crashed out of the Champions League on a 6-2 aggregate and into the Caf Confederation Cup playoffs.

“We succumbed to a painful defeat in Morocco because we were nowhere close to our best on the night. We know that we are capable of a much better performance than what we showed in Morocco,” the Phobians’ statement on Monday reads.

“But it was a great learning experience for our young players and technical team, majority of whom were experiencing their very first taste of continental football away from home.

“We have a chance to make amends in the confederation cup and this important lesson we have picked up in Morocco will inspire us to rise above our current disappointment…

“We apologize to our fans for not making the ultimate dream come true, but we believe this is the time that the team needs you most to accomplish the tasks ahead. The Caf Champions League is a project we gradually want to make an impact on again after a very long absence.”

On the day, Tanzania ace Simon Msuva netted twice for Wydad, adding to goals from Aymane El Hassouni, Achraf Dari, Yahya Jabrane, and Ayoub El Amloud.

Winger Patrick Razak recorded Hearts’consolation which proved woefully inadequate to save their fall from the Champions League.

Champions League winners in 2000, Hearts reached the first round after a 2-0 home victory over Guinean side Club Industriel de Kamsar in the preliminary round.

The two teams faced off in a one-off fixture in Accra, the originally scheduled first leg fixture in Guinea cancelled due to political instability in the country.

Samuel Boadu’s side’s return to the Champions League was a result of their winning of the Ghana Premier League last season.

Late Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Meyiwa's murder trial date set

Seven years after the ex-Bafana Bafana star was gunned down, justice is yet to be served

The trial date for the five men accused of murdering former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa has been set to begin on April 11, 2022.

The High Court sitting in Palm Ridge, Gauteng decided on the date following an agreement reached between the prosecution team and the lawyers representing the alleged killers.

After starting on April 11 to 29, the trial is scheduled to continue between May 30 and June 17 in what is expected to bring closure to the murder case of Meyiwa, who was gunned down in Vosloorus on the East Rand on October 26, 2014.

“We have agreed that six weeks before the trial, the state will make available nine witness statements which were withheld for security reasons,” prosecutor George Baloyi told the court as per Sowetan Live.

“The state will also undertake to make available a core bundle of all the witness statements to the defence…The contents of the dockets have already been disclosed…

“All the preliminary arrangements have been made. The trial should commence on April 11. All the parties will be ready for trial. Witnesses are from the Vosloorus area.”

Meyiwa was shot dead at the home of his then-girlfriend, singer Kelly Khumalo.

But the murder case has dragged on until the arrest of the accused on October 26, 2020, the day which marked six years since Meyiwa was killed.

Lobby group AfriForum, who are representing the Meyiwa family are, however, “disappointed” the matter has been pushed to next year.

Advocate Gerrie Nel, who is AfriForum’s head of private prosecutions, also said they hope more suspects will be added to the trial.

“It has been seven years since Mr Meyiwa was tragically killed,” said Nel on EWN.

“We have no idea why this matter couldn’t have proceeded. One could think of a lot of reasons but that was never mentioned, the family was never informed. So the matter has now been postponed for trial [starting] on the 11th of April.

“We certainly hope this is the last postponement because after seven years, any family needs closure. Being disappointed, we still hope the matter will proceed next year at the postponement date.

“Obviously we are still disappointed that only these five accused have been charged in this matter. We will still continue consulting with the police and the investigating officer to see if there is a possibility of other accused being added to this trial.”

AfriForum argues Meyiwa’s death was not a robbery gone wrong as widely believed but a result of contract killing involving a mastermind.

“If we are dealing with a contract killing, you must have a mastermind charged with all the other accused, just to have success in the matter,” Nel added.

'Unlucky' Orlando Pirates sweat over Mabasa and Sandilands' fitness

The Buccaneers played their last match with reserve team goalkeeper as backup while a key striker finished the game as an injury concern

Orlando Pirates co-coach Mandla Ncikazi says they are "unlucky with injuries" and is “praying” forward Tshegofatso Mabasa did not emerge from Sunday’s 1-0 win over Diables Noirs with a knock.

Mabasa came on as a second half substitute to play the last 35 minutes but Ncikazi is worried the striker could have picked up an injury in this home Caf Confederation Cup clash.

The latest concern came a day after goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands was declared unfit for the match, leaving Diski Challenge and inexperienced gloveman Thuntsane Kopano deputising Siyabonga Mpontshane.

Sandilands’ injury further handicaps Pirates in goal with Richard Ofori and Elson Sithole already injured.

“I’m just praying that there is no other injury, Mabasa, we’ll wait for our medical team to inform us. We can’t afford to have another injury,” said Ncikazi as per iDiski Times.

“We’re one team that is so unlucky with injuries. Wayne Sandilands had the same problem yesterday [Saturday] but back to the match, we’re just happy that we went to the next round.

“This is African football and today we saw what happened, if you don’t score, you’ll have problems. I’m just happy that the team could go into the next phase?”

If Mabasa is declared unavailable for the next match, that would leave Pirates with another crisis upfront.

Frank Mhango has not featured in the Buccaneers’ last seven games while Ghanian striker Kwame Paprah was also unavailable against Diables Noirs.

The two joined another forward, Zakhele Lepasa, who has not played a match this year after undergoing surgery twice.

Attacking midfielder Thembinkosi Lorch and defender Innocent Maela are already out injured.

But while Ncikazi was expressing worry over Mabasa and Sandilands, the coach had something to cheer about concerning attacking midfielder Goodman Mosele.

Prior to hosting Diables Noirs, Mosele had missed the team's two previous matches but returned to play 90 minutes.

“I was surprised that he lasted for the duration of the match. We were skeptical because it was his first match after the period he was not with the team,” Ncikazi added.

“Goodman, he sustained himself, he did well and contributed in the setup. I’m just happy that he’s back. There is more from him but in the match we’ve had a lot of defending towards the end.  But he did his job and he did very well, we’re proud of him.”

Sunday’s match was the first round, second leg of the Confederation Cup which saw Pirates advance to the competition’s play-offs stage withj a 1-0 aggregate scoreline after the away leg ended goalless.

The Premier League Big Six's Best Front Threes - Ranked

The defeat in Mombasa came days after they were beaten by arch-rivals Gor Mahia in a Mashemeji clash duel at Kasarani

AFC Leopards head coach Patrick Aussems has claimed incompetent match officials are dragging Kenyan football through the mud.

The Belgian tactician made the claims after his Football Kenya Federation Premier League side lost 2-1 to Bandari on Sunday at the Mbaraki stadium.

"These guys [officials] are totally incompetent and, for sure, they are dragging Kenyan football through the mud," the former Simba SC head coach said, as per Citizen Digital.

Meanwhile, Aussems stated they must reinforce the playing unit, which was massively depleted after the exit of 17 players before the 2021/22 campaign began in late September.

"I said a week ago that I am hoping we will be able to recruit at least two strikers. Did you see the game and how it became clear that we needed some fresh legs?" Aussems asked.

"I’m calling on management once again to look into this matter because it is derailing our plans for this season. We lost many players, and again, we can’t sign. It becomes difficult.

"The board is here, ask them for it’s now been four or five weeks since I told them that we needed players, and we already know which players we would like, but unfortunately this Fifa ban is not yet solved, so let’s see what will happen in the future."

Elvis Rupia - who scored 17 goals and was Ingwe's top scorer in the last season, Clyde Senaji, Benjamin Ochan, Jeff Oyemba, Austin Odhiambo, Harrison Mwendwa, Robinson Kamura, and Yusuf Mainge are among the first-teamers who ditched the local giants.

AFC Leopards are currently unable to beef up the squad with new players given the sanction from Fifa that was meted out on them due to debt owed to former coach Andre Casa Mbungo and ex-players Tressor Ndikumana, Vincent Habamahoro, and Soter Kayumba.

The Bandari loss is the second consecutive defeat Ingwe have suffered since going down 1-0 to Gor Mahia in the Mashemeji Derby's 90th edition last week.

Despite opening the season with a win against the reigning champions Tusker, AFC Leopards are currently 12th on the log with just four points.

Sources: Benzema out for a month with injury

The English full-back has conceded the Red Devils are "way too easy to play against" at the moment

Luke Shaw has admitted Manchester United's thrashing at the hands of Liverpool had been coming.

United extended their winless streak in the Premier League to four games after losing 5-0 to Jurgen Klopp's Reds at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Naby Keita and Diogo Jota scored early goals to set Liverpool on their way to a comprehensive victory, with a Mohamed Salah hat-trick completing the scoring, and Shaw was in no mood to offer any excuses after the game.

What's been said?

The United left-back told Stadium Astro: “I think it's ourselves that we need to look at, first and foremost, in the mirror. Are we doing everything right and preparing right for the games in ourselves?

“Of course we have the tactics and how the manager wants us to play, but I think at times we're way too easy to play against. I think, for example, you look at the first goal, it can't be possible that they can have sort of three running through in the first five minutes.

"We need to be more compact, we need to be better and we know that. I think also maybe we can say this result was coming. I think in past games where we've won, we haven't been at our best and we know that.

“We felt that inside the dressing room and today we need to reflect and we have to move on from this because it hurts.”

Man Utd hit 'rock bottom'

Solskjaer also gave an honest assessment of his side's latest domestic display, as questions continue to be asked of whether he is the right man to take the club forward.

"It is the darkest day I have had leading these players," The Norwegian, who was handed a new three-year contract in August, told Sky Sports. "We were not good enough individually and as a team, [we] can't give a team like Liverpool those chances but unfortunately we did.

"[The responsibility] is mine, that is it."

Solskjaer added on whether he still believes he can turn United's fortunes around: "I have come too far, we have come too far as a group. We are too close to give up now. It is going to be a difficult one.

"The players will be low but there's loads of characters there. We know we are rock bottom, we can't feel any worse than this. Let's see where we take it."

What's next?

The Red Devils are now eight points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea, and will have five days to reflect on their dismal showing against Liverpool before another crucial fixture against Tottenham.

Solskjaer's side will then turn their attention to a Champions League group stage meeting with Atalanta before preparations begin for the first Manchester derby of the season against noisy neighbours City on November 6.

Thabit: Azam FC will take advantage of Yanga SC’s sluggish campaign

The England midfielder showered praise on the 23-year-old Chipolopolo after his assist helped him to score his first goal in this campaign

Leicester City midfielder James Maddison has described Patson Daka as a player who doesn’t have "a greedy bone" in his body after he set him up to score in the 2-1 Premier League win against Brentford on Sunday.

The Foxes travelled to West London to face the promoted side after their earlier wins against Manchester United and Spartak Moscow. City took the lead through a stunning long-range drive from Youri Tielemans in the 14th minute.

The Bees then moved level in the 60th minute courtesy of Mathias Jorgensen but 14 minutes later, the Zambia international, who had come on in the 46th minute for Jamie Vardy, set up Maddison to score what turned out to be the winner at Brentford Community Stadium.

The England international has reserved praise for the Chipolopolo star, who despite being in a position to shoot and score, he decided to lay a pass to him.

“Patson, as a guy, is so nice, so humble, so hard-working,” Maddison told the club’s official website. “He’s not got a greedy bone in his body. I always believed that he was going to square it to me. I was screaming just in case he wasn’t!

“But it was a brilliant pass from Kelechi, a great run, and it’s my job to try and keep up because he’s so quick. I was there for the tap-in and thankfully he squared it with good awareness and good vision.

“It’s a massive week. When you play Manchester United at home, every game against them at the minute is magnified because Cristiano Ronaldo’s back. That felt like a really big game, which we did really well in. We then travelled to Moscow and got a win in the Patson [Daka] Show!

“We travelled back, with not much rest time and not much training, and that one was probably the toughest out of the lot to be honest, to come here and win. They put you under so much pressure. It’s a brilliant week for the club.”

On Tielemans' stunning goal, Maddison explained: "I was behind it. I tried to play almost like a quick free-kick into Kelly (Kelechi Iheanacho) and the defender just headed it out to Youri and I don’t think I’d want it to fall to anyone else apart from Youri [Tielemans] at the minute.”

Meanwhile, Nigeria international Iheanacho played for the entire game.
