Valencia release statement on fans' racial abuse of Vinicius Junior

The 32-year-old midfielder joined his countrymen to demand an end to police brutality

Super Eagles midfielder John Ogu was among thousands of people who took to the streets of Lagos to protest for a better Nigeria.

Ogu joined other entertainment stars in the walk that started at the Lekki Toll Gate to Onikan to demand an overhaul of the Nigeria Police Force.

There have been demonstrations in the West African country since last week with citizens calling for the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, a police unit accussed of unlawful arrest and extrajudicial killings.

Meanwhile, football stars including Arsenal's Mesut Ozil, Manchester United's Marcus Rashford, Chelsea's Antonio Rudiger have also shown their support to the cause.

In response to the protests, the Nigerian government disbanded SARS on Sunday and confirmed the formation of the Special Weapons and Tactics team (SWAT) two days later but the new development has been rejected by the people who claim it will have the same officers.

After the walk, Ogu who was part of the Nigeria team that won bronze at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt said he is motivated by the zeal of the Nigerian youth as he narrates his experience on the streets.

“Our generation is awake. I saw angry youth and Nigerians today,” Ogu tweeted.

“It’s no Jamboree, we want change in the country now. God bless everyone who has come out to protest for a better Nigeria. I’m really proud today to be a part of it

“That walk from Lekki Toll gate yesterday to Onikan gave me joy. All the pain, struggles and killings of the youth gave me that energy to walk as long as the country will get better. The crowd was Massive #EndPoliceBrutalityInNigeriaNow. #EndPoliceBrutalityinNigeria.

“You could see the pain in everyone’s eyes yesterday while marching. S/O to those people who made sure everywhere was clean. God bless those who brought food and water to help.

“The moment I heard young girls on the road say, these people are stubborn, ‘What do you want the Government to do?’ When I was going to protest, I knew we are in trouble in this country.”

Monare: Orlando Pirates sign reported Kaizer Chiefs target

The hardworking player has reunited his former Wits teammates Terrence Dzvukamanja, Deon Hotto and Thulani Hlatshwayo, who recently joined Bucs

Orlando Pirates have announced the signing of former Bidvest Wits midfielder Thabang Monare.

The experienced midfield maestro became a free agent after he parted ways with Wits with the club having sold its Premier Soccer League (PSL) status to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.

Monare has been heavily linked with Pirates' arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs since the 2018/19 season after he played a key role for Wits as they finished third on the PSL standings.

However, the Buccaneers have now snapped up Monare as they prepare for the new 2020/21 season.

"Orlando Pirates Football Club is pleased to confirm the signing of Thabang Monare as a free agent," a club statement read.

"The former Jomo Cosmos and Bidvest Wits midfielder joins the Buccaneers on a two-year deal."

"The 31-year-old who spent four seasons at the Clever Boys, comes in to bolster the midfield where the Buccaneers will be contesting in a compressed 2020/21 season which includes the CAF Confederations Cup."

Monare is pleased to have joined the Soweto giants and he is hoping to make a meaningful contribution at Pirates, who are expected to challenge for the PSL title in the new term.

“I am happy to have signed with the Club,” said Monare.

“I hope, like I have done in my entire career, I can make a meaningful contribution during my time here.

"I think this is a team that suits my style of play and that can only benefit me and the team for the season ahead.”

Pirates are Monare's third professional club having started his career at Jomo Cosmos in 2012 and he helped the team secure promotion to the PSL from the National First Division (NFD) in 2015.

His exploits in the PSL caught the eye of Wits and the club signed him from Cosmos ahead of the 2016/17 campaign.

The Mpumalanga-born player established himself as one of the top central midfielders in the country during his time with the Clever Boys.

Monare was a regular for the now-defunct Wits as they clinched the league and cup (MTN8) double in his debut season with the team.

He also helped the Clever Boys clinched the 2017 Telkom Knockout Cup.

Rudiger determined to win back spot in Chelsea team after turning down summer offers

The Germany international says he "wasn’t prepared to pack it all in" and leave Stamford Bridge despite falling down the squad pecking order

Antonio Rudiger has expressed his determination to win back a spot in Chelsea's starting XI after turning down a number of transfer offers over the summer.

Rudiger completed a £29 million ($38m) move to Chelsea from Roma in July 2017 and has since racked up 116 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring six goals.

The Germany international has helped the Blues win the FA Cup and Europa League, while also playing a key role in their run to a fourth-place Premier League finish last season.

However, the 27-year-old has yet to feature for Frank Lampard's side at the start of the 2020-21 campaign, with Thiago Silva drafted in on a free transfer to partner Kurt Zouma in the heart of defence after leaving Paris Saint-Germain in August.

PSG, Milan and Tottenham were all linked with Rudiger during the summer transfer window, but the market closed before any potential deal could be finalised.

The experienced centre-back has now revealed that he rejected two opportunities from potential suitors to remain in west London, telling The Athletic: “The club didn’t tell me that it was absolutely necessary for me to find a new club and that they definitely didn’t have me in their plans for the next few months.

“I also turned down one or two options myself. I wasn’t prepared to pack it all in simply because I had been left out a few times. I enjoy living in London and like being at Chelsea.”

Rudiger added: “Naturally, I looked at a couple of options in the two weeks before the end of the transfer window. There was a possibility of a loan deal, in order for me to get more game time. Due to many different reasons and the shortage of time, nothing materialised in the end.”

The former Roma star is currently away on international duty with Germany, and managed to get 90 minutes under his belt in the 3-3 draw against Switzerland in the Nations League on Tuesday.

Rudiger will now return to Chelsea ahead of the Premier League clash with Southampton on Saturday, and he is fully focused on forcing his way back into Lampard's plans as the season progresses.

“It is what it is now. I will accept it for the time being and try to show myself in every training session," he said. "We are in many different competitions, it’s two games per week all the way from now. Sometimes in football, things can change very quickly. That’s why I will continue to give my best every day and try to convince the manager.”

FIFA 21: Who are the best free agents in the game?

Finding cheap stars is one route to success in Career Mode, with out-of-contract players very attractive to teams with small budgets

Career Mode in FIFA 21 allows you to start with a huge cash injection by using the new Financial Takeover option, where you can give up to £500 million to your club for the first transfer window.

For many players, this will feel like cheating as it makes Career Mode too easy. Some hardcore FIFA gamers choose to take charge of teams with no money in lower divisions and look to sign smartly and cheaply to earn their success.

At the start of FIFA 21, there are many free agents on the transfer market you can pick up, as long as you can offer them a suitable contract to entice them to join your team.

Some well-known names are available for free at the start of Career Mode, including Australian midfielder Aaron Mooy and Russian striker Artem Dzyuba.

Many of these players have the same current rating as their potential rating as they are the wrong side of 30 and thus will only be short-term fixes for many clubs.

Some of the younger, lesser-known players have higher potential ratings, meaning they can be good long-term investments for your club, including Colombian midfielder Wilmar Barrios who can reach an overall rating of 84.

Egyptian striker Mostafa Mohamed is rated at 73 when the game begins but with the right game time and training, can become an 80-rated forward.

It is always worth scouting the free agents before making them a contract offer as then you will know what to offer them during negotations. You will also be able to see their specific attributes, including pace and skill moves, to determine whether they are the right fit for your club.

'The biggest fraud I've seen!' - Ronaldo's sister Katia Aveiro in Instagram rant after Juventus star's positive Covid-19 test

The Portuguese tested positive for coronavirus on October 13 and it is uncertain as to whether he'll be available to face Lionel Messi and Barcelona

Cristiano Ronaldo's sister Katia Aveiro has posted an explosive rant on Instagram following news of the positive coronavirus test for the Juventus superstar.

It was confirmed on Tuesday that five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo had tested positive for Covid-19 while he was away on international duty with Portugal, forcing him to withdraw from the squad and self-isolate.

A statement from the Portuguese football federation read: "Cristiano Ronaldo was released from training with the national team after a positive test for Covid-19, so he will not face Sweden.

"The Portugal international is doing well, without symptoms, and in isolation.

"Following the positive test, the remaining players underwent new tests on Tuesday morning, and all produced a negative result and are available to Fernando Santos for training this afternoon."

And following news of the outcome of the test, Katia Aveiro expressed her frustration on Instagram: "If Cristiano Ronaldo is the one who has to wake the world up, I have to say that this Portuguese really is an envoy from God. Thank you!

"I believe that, today, thousands of people who have come to believe so much in this pandemic, in the tests and the measures taken will, like me, see it is the biggest fraud I've seen since I was born.

"A phrase that I read today and that I stood up to applaud: 'Enough fooling the entire world'. Someone, open your eyes, please."

Goal can confirm that Ronaldo will travel to Turin later on Wednesday where he'll commence a period of quarantine, which will last for an initial 10 days.

That will mean the former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward will definitely be unavailable for Juve's Serie A fixture against Crotone on October 17, while he'll also miss the Champions League opener against Dynamo Kiev three days later.

Should he subsequently return a negative test, Ronaldo would be in a position to return to action in time for the Champions League showdown with Lionel Messi and Barcelona on October 28.

It will, however, depend on the period of time between testing and the meeting with Barca at the Allianz Stadium, with Ronaldo needing to be free of Covid-19 for at least one week prior to the fixture.

There may be a scenario that would see the 35-year-old return to action earlier than expected, if it is established that a positive test was a 'false positive' - where a number of subsequent tests return a negative result.

Portugal head coach Fernando Santos has since suggested that Ronaldo is baffled by the outcome of the testing, with the Juve forward having shown no symptoms despite returning a positive.

He told reporters: "He (Ronaldo) is managing the situation very well. He is in the room, saying he wants to play, he talks to us from upstairs [from his balcony].

"He is completely asymptomatic, he is okay, without any symptoms, he doesn’t even know what happened to him."

Transfer Talk: Liverpool may lure Real loanee Odegaard away from Arsenal

The duo has extended their stay at the Mother City side with the team set to face Kaizer Chiefs in the MTN8 quarter-final match on Saturday

Cape Town City have moved swiftly to extend Bafana Bafana record holder Fagrie Lakay's contract.

The speedy winger, who is the youngest player to wear the South African national team jersey, has been linked with Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in recent weeks.

Lakay is coming off his best season in the elite league as he netted three goals and registered two assists from 20 appearances in the competition.

His exploits have reportedly attracted interest from the two Soweto giants, but City have offered Lakay a new deal which he signed.

"The club is delighted to confirm a permanent deal for 23-year-old forward Fagrie Lakay, signing till to June 2024," a club statement read

"Explosive talent, booming future."

Lakay, who started his career at former PSL champions Santos, is a well-travelled player despite being only 23 having had stints with Ajax Cape Town, SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits

Lakay became the youngest player to play for Bafana at 17 years, 11 months, 25 days when he made his international debut for South Africa against Ivory Coast in a friendly match in November 2014.

Meanwhile, City also announced that Lakay's club teammate Tashreeq Morris has also signed a new contract.

The lanky centre forward is coming off his first season with the Citizens having joined the club from Ajax Cape Town ahead of the 2019/20 season.

Morris struggled for game time with Kermit Erasmus preferred ahead of him, but the Citizens have decided to extend his contract.

"City striker Tashreeq Morris has penned over the dotted line! He signs a new deal till 2022," another club statement read

"Congratulations, big man Tassie."

Morris, who netted once in 12 competitive appearances for City, will be hoping to enjoy regular game time in the new season with the club having sold Erasmus to Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 26-year-old was a nurtured in the Ajax academy, before being promoted to the first team in 2013 and he played for South Africa under-23 national team at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.

USMNT star Pulisic criticised after falling off boat on to endangered goliath grouper fish following ball juggling stunt

The England international has embraced the addition of another left-back as the Red Devils bid to bounce back from a dismal start to the season

Luka Shaw has insisted he welcomes the extra competition for places at Manchester United after seeing Alex Telles arrive at Old Trafford from Porto.

United paid €17 million (£15m/$20m) to lure Telles away from Estadio Do Dragao on deadline day, with the 27-year-old signing a four-year contract.

Telles will now be expected to compete with Shaw and Brandon Williams for a regular spot in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's starting XI.

Shaw has come under scrutiny at the start of the 2020-21 campaign, with United shipping a total of 11 goals in their opening three Premier League fixtures.

Telles is being tipped to go straight into Solskjaer's line-up when his side returns to top-flight action against Newcastle on Saturday, having benefitted from two weeks to reflect on a 6-1 defeat to Tottenham before the international break.

Edinson Cavani and Facundo Pellistri joined the Portuguese in Manchester on deadline day, increasing United's overall tally of summer signings to four, with Donny van de Beek brought in from Ajax for £35m ($46m) back in September.

Shaw is more concerned with the overall benefit the club's recruitment drive could have on the squad rather than his own position in it, with everyone pulling in the same direction ahead of a crucial trip to St James' Park this weekend.

“Competition for any team is a must,” he told the Red Devils' official website. "There is competition for every single spot and you’ve got to be ready for it, work hard and give the manager a decision harder than what he’s had to make before.

"Like I said, competition is very healthy for the squad, it’ll push everyone even more because everyone wants to play.

“It [Saturday's match] is one we all want to play in. We all hoped it would be a bit earlier, to be honest, as the last game wasn’t good. We’ve had a lot of time to think and work and be ready for this.

"We need to win it. It’s a must-win game and we want to put things right. We’ve got very important games coming up. Everyone is looking forward to working hard so we’re going to be ready for it.”

Asked what United will need to do to bounce back from their heavy loss to Spurs against Newcastle, Shaw responded: “We need to control the game.

“We need to create chances. We need to be clinical and, especially at the back, we need to be more solid.

“Not just as a backline but throughout the whole team, a bit more defensively solid and a bit more compact. I think you’ve probably seen in the last few games, we were easy to play through.

"Look, we can count it as down to mistakes and people can put their hands up. Maybe I’ve made a couple of mistakes and so have others in the games.

“We’ll put our hands up and move on from that but I think everyone needs to give a little bit extra, including myself. We want to and need to. This club deserves that.”

New Zealand pull out of England friendly due to coronavirus complications

The Three Lions will not face the All Whites at Wembley on November 12 due to issues over player availability and travel

New Zealand have withdrawn from next month's friendly against England at Wembley due to complications caused by the coronavirus.

The All Whites were due to face Gareth Southgate's side on November 12 but have pulled out because of issues over travel and player availability amid the pandemic.

New Zealand Football chief executive Andrew Pragnell said: "It is with deep regret that we have been forced to cancel our participation in the upcoming match against England at Wembley

"It is not an action taken lightly, this is a match we all wanted to play, however, as it stands, of the last All Whites squad selected for the November 2019 tour, even excluding the New Zealand-based players, a significant number of the team would be subject to quarantine or restrictions on their return home.

"This would heavily disrupt their domestic seasons and potentially jeopardise their professional careers.

"The shifting nature of travel restrictions and commercial flight availability under Covid means that we do not have certainty we could assemble a squad at Wembley on this day and defaulting on this fixture at the last minute is not an option.

"Prior to Covid we had a full calendar of fixtures planned for the All Whites, and we have been proactive in seeking out matches for the team since the disruption, but unfortunately it just isn't possible to make the new games we have scheduled this year happen.

"We are now looking forward to the March 2021 international window as we begin our qualifying campaign for the FIFA World Cup 2022."

Reacting to the news, England confirmed that they would be seeking a replacement for the fixture, with an announcement to be made in due course.

The Three Lions are in Nations League action later on Wednesday when they face Denmark at Wembley, with Southgate's side seeking to make it three wins from three over the latest international break.

England beat Wales 3-0 in a friendly courtesy of goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Conor Coady and Danny Ings, before beating Belgium 2-1 in the Nations League.

Romelu Lukaku had given the visitors the lead in that game although the Three Lions hit back courtesy of a penalty from Marcus Rashford and a deflected strike from Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount.

Inter 1-0 Napoli: Lukaku penalty closes the gap at the top

The midfielder joins Cristiano Ronaldo in needing to enter a period of quarantine, with the Serie A champions due to face Crotone on Saturday

Juventus have confirmed that midfielder Weston McKennie has tested positive for coronavirus, leading to the rest of the squad going into voluntary isolation.

The news comes just 24 hours after it was confirmed that star player Cristiano Ronaldo had also tested positive for Covid-19 while on international duty with Portugal.

As confirmed by Goal Italy, the 35-year-old forward will return to Turin on Wednesday and self-isolate for 10 days, with Ronaldo being unavailable for his side's next two matches against Crotone and Dynamo Kiev.

McKennie will have to follow a similar procedure, with the rest of Juve's first-team squad allowed to train and take part in matches, should they return negative coronavirus tests.

Confirming the positive test for USMNT midfielder McKennie, Juve wrote in a statement: "Juventus football club announces that, during the checks provided for the protocol in force, the player Weston McKennie has tested positive for Covid-19.

"In compliance with the regulations and the protocol, the team entered into fiduciary isolation this evening. This procedure will allow all persons negative to the tests to carry out regular training and match activities, but will not allow contact with people outside of the group.

"The club is in constant contact with the relevant health authorities."

The news is the latest coronavirus case to affect football in Italy, with a number of players in Italy's top flight, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ashley Young, having tested positive for Covid-19 in recent weeks.

AC Milan forward Ibrahimovic has since returned a negative test and is able to resume playing again, although the spate of cases offers a worrying outlook for top-flight football in the country and its capacity to continue.

Indeed, controversy surrounded Napoli's scheduled meeting with Juventus that was due to take place on October 4, with the match eventually being suspended after Gennaro Gattuso's side were advised not to travel to Turn by local health authorities.

That decision was prompted by positive coronavirus tests for Piotr Zielinski and Eljif Elmas, as well as a member of staff connected to the Naples club.

With Covid-19 cases across the country continuing to rise, it remains to be seen if a decision is made to suspend the 2020-21 Serie A season - a possible outcome that former Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president Carlo Tavecchio has warned would be "worse than apocalyptic".

Transfer Talk: Aston Villa turn to Luiz Henrique after Nico Williams snub

Here's all you need to know about the biggest rivalry in Scottish football, why it's called the Old Firm and more

Celtic vs Rangers is one of the most passionate – and heated – club football rivalries in the world, matching the intensity of the likes of El Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The two Scottish teams have a storied rivalry, their match-up extending past the limits of football and into deeper themes of national identity, politics and religion.

Goal has everything you need to know about why it's called the Old Firm derby, the history behind the two clubs and more.

Contents

Why is Celtic vs Rangers called the Old Firm derby? Why do Celtic fans say there is no Old Firm derby? Why do Celtic and Rangers have such a deep rivalry? What does the Rangers slogan 'WATP' mean? What are Celtic's chants & song lyrics? What are Rangers' chants & song lyrics?

Why is Celtic vs Rangers called the Old Firm derby?

It is understood that the Celtic-Rangers rivalry has been dubbed the "Old Firm" since the early 20th century, when the two faced each other in the 1904 Scottish Cup Final.

The magazine The Scottish Referee had drawn up a satirical cartoon of the two rivals in the lead-up to the game, acknowledging the commercialisation of their high-profile meetings that attracted large crowds and fervent support. A panel in the comic showed a man with a sandwich board that read: "Patronise The Old Firm: Rangers, Celtic Ltd".

Another theory is that the term originated from match commentators describing an early meeting between the two teams meeting as "like two old, firm friends".

Why do Celtic fans say there is no Old Firm derby?

Many Celtic fans take the antagonistic view that the Old Firm derby is no more following the financial collapse of Rangers in 2012, which led to Rangers being run by a new company.

Instead, some Celtic supporters and, indeed, the club itself, prefer to use the term 'Glasgow derby'. Rangers, notably, continue to officially use 'Old Firm'.

Relatedly, due to their 'death' and 'rebirth', Rangers and their fans are commonly referred to by Celtic's support as 'zombies'.

Why do Celtic and Rangers have such a deep rivalry?

Celtic and Rangers are the most successful in Scottish football, but that's only one facet of their heated, deep-seated rivalry with one another.

Their rivalry is rooted in a divide of views regarding religion, identity and politics, as well their relationship with Ireland, particularly Northern Ireland.

Traditionally, Rangers supporters align themselves as native Scots or Ulster Scots as well as Protestant and Loyalist, while Celtic fans tend to be Irish-Scots and Catholic and Republican.

Rangers fans also tend to identify more as pro-British, waving Union Jack flags at matches while Celtic supporters are more commonly seen waving the Irish tricolour.

Rangers' history is deeply rooted in the Protestant community, and until Graeme Souness became manager in 1986, went decades without signing a Catholic player. Souness signing ex-Celtic forward Mo Johnston in 1989 brought an end to the practise, which is no longer continued.

Old Firm derbies are typically heated and intense affairs, rivalling such high-profile clashes such as De Klassieker and El Clasico.

Henrik Larsson, who has played in both, conceded even those didn't live up to the Old Firm: “I never experienced anything, either before or after, that compared to my Old Firm games in Scotland. That was the best atmosphere and those were the most fierce encounters I ever played in.”

It's also a brutal environment for players to find themselves in the midst of, with Rangers legend Brian Laudrup calling the clash "terrifying".

"As soon as you join one of these clubs, from the very first minutes you are told about this game," Laudrup told the Daily Record.

“To play in one was terrifying. It was a bit scary but on the other hand it’s tremendous to be involved in one of the world’s biggest derbies.

"For these players it's tremendous. They have read about the derby and heard about it from those who have played in the game but to actually be part of it is completely different. It’s something they will never forget.”

Several incidents in the late 90's during the derby have involved infamous pitch invasions, instances of vandalism and general hooliganism caused by the heightened tension of the clash, prompting the Scottish FA to hold the derby in early afternoon.

When Rangers had the opportunity to win the league against Celtic on the last day of the season in May 1999, several Celtic fans in the stadium took to throwing objects at the opposition players. One such object hit referee Hugh Dallas, who was forced to stop play and receive medical treatment.

Since then, measures have been taken to avoid the possibility of the Premiership being decided on the last day between Celtic and Rangers.

What does the Rangers slogan 'WATP' mean?

The Rangers slogan 'WATP' stands for 'We Are The People'. It is sometimes sung as a chant by Gers supporters during football matches.

It is unclear what exactly the statement 'We Are The People' means and how it passed into Rangers fandom, but there are a number of possible origin stories. One suggestion is that it is a variation on 'we are the [chosen] people', while another, related, explanation is that it is taken from a passage in the bible.

The slogan is popular among the loyalist community in Northern Ireland and it is possible that it filtered into the culture of Rangers supporters from there, while the opposite is also true.

According to the book Who are 'The People'? (Shirlow and McGovern, 1997), a piece of graffiti commonly seen in parts of Northern Ireland was "We are the People: Prods Rule OK" - a reference to the Protestant community. The statement is understood as "a clear and unequivocal statement of loyalty, identity and devotion to and from Ireland's Protestants.

Paulo Fonseca to leave Roma at the end of the season

The Red Eagles youngsters has set himself a target of hitting double figures when the new campaign gets underway

Express FC forward Eric Kambaale is oozing with confidence as the new season draws closer, vowing to score double figures and help his club win silverware.

The 20-year-old has revealed his happiness with the training sessions they have been going through as they prepare for the 2020-21 Uganda Premier League (UPL) season return on November 20.

“I am happy that I’ve managed to get my groove back using the technical team’s training schedule, I am so pumped up for next season and the target is to help the club win some silverware,” Kambaale told the club’s official website.

“Personally, I am going to strive to hit double digits which I think will help me be a top scorer.”

Kambaale will, however, face a stiff challenge from coming from new signing Mustafa Kiragga as well as the club’s top scorer last season Frank Kalanda

On Tuesday, Express confirmed the appointment of Lewis Ainebyona as their new performance analyst ahead of the new campaign.

“The current football demands call for top personnel in different departments something Express have done with the appointment of performance analyst Lewis Ainebyona,” the club revealed in a statement on their official website.

Speaking after taking up the job, the 25-year-old - who is a graduate of football studies from Solent University in Southampton, England - has described joining the Red Eagles’ technical team as a dream come true.

“Being a club with history and having existed for all that long, showed that there was stability and sustainability. Also getting a chance to work with the coaches who are legends in Ugandan football attracted me to learn from the very best," he said as per the same statement.

“My target to grow in my department, help the team win trophies, participate in the African club competitions, and also strive to be one of the leading football performance analysts in Uganda.”

The Ugandan giants have become the first club in the country to make such an appointment which the CEO Isaac Mwesigwa stated was worthwhile.

“The modern game has evolved and data analysis is key in making informed decisions regarding the performance of the team. I’ve known Lewis for a while and with his enthusiasm and understanding of the game he is a good addition to our club," he said.

Ainebyona also featured for several non-league English sides as a forward like Sway FC in Hampshire, Boujee Pint CF, and Athletico Romsey FC as he pursued his studies.

Performance analysts are tasked with analyzing recorded club matches and providing the technical team with detailed analysis through reports.

The Red Eagles have won six league titles and are chasing a seventh which was last won in 2012. Wasswa Bbosa has rebuilt the squad signing up to 15 new players ahead of the new campaign set to begin on November 20.

Arsenal vs Villarreal: TV channel, live stream, team news & prediction

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler is aware of the legacy of East Bengal and considers managing a team in a completely new environment like India to be a challenge.

The seventh highest goal scorer in Premier League history was recently appointed as the head coach of East Bengal ahead of the 2020-21 Indian Super League (ISL) season. The English manager joined the Red and Golds on a two-year deal.

Fowler, who guided A-League club Brisbane Roar to the elimination finals last season, has come to India in search of a new challenge.

“It is a new league and for me, I have to challenge myself. It is a new team coming into a new league and when I say a new team, it is a team which is 100 years old but coming into a new league," he told Sky Sports.

"I am looking forward to it, it is a big challenge. We are a little bit late in getting our team together but I am confident of what I can do and the people around me."

The former Liverpool striker also suggested that he has researched about East Bengal and is also aware of their rivalry with Mohun Bagan.

“When you are linked to a club you do your due diligence and you make sure everything is right. You make sure you look at the history of the team. A team that has been amalgamated with one of the ISL clubs is ATK Mohun Bagan. My team is steeped in derby tradition.

“Obviously when we play each other, there is going to be millions of people all over India paying attention to the game. There will not be any crowd this year but in the years to come, this sort of rivalry will be amazing, you are talking about 100,000 people watching us.”

Crystal Palace closing in on Sam Johnstone signing

Following his international bow against the Carthage Eagles, the 25-year-old has expressed his delight representing the three-time African champions

Cyriel Dessers was ecstatic to get his first international debut for Nigeria in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw against Tunisia.

Born in Belgium to a Belgian father and Nigerian mother, the 25-year-old pledged his allegiance to the Super Eagles.

He was an unused substitute against Algeria, notwithstanding, he made his bow against the Carthage Eagles after replacing captain Ahmed Musa with 18 minutes left to play at the Jacques Lemans Arena.

“Proud and honoured to represent a big football nation like Nigeria. Proud to be a Super Eagle,” he tweeted.

While at Heracles Almelo, Dessers had expressed his wish to represent the 2013 African champions after meeting with officials of the Nigeria Football Federation.

"There's been communication but I've got to keep playing as well as I can for Heracles, and hopefully that will happen soon," he told BBC Sport.

"I know it's a strong ambition of mine, but sometimes you need to stay focused and not get distracted as a professional footballer.

"Everyone in the family is hoping - and to be involved with Nigeria would be incredibly amazing for my career, but I've got to keep proving myself first.

"To get a chance to stand at the door is a step forward. You start every day hoping for success at club level. If you keep working hard, hopefully, you make some life goals come true."

He was invited for the first time earlier this year by coach Gernot Rohr for Africa Cup of Nations qualification with Sierra Leone – an encounter that could not take place owing to the outbreak of Covid-19 which crippled football-related activities across the globe.

"It hurt me because I thought it was going to be one of the best moments of my life - or at least my career - and that it didn't go through was really painful," Dessers told BBC Sport.

“I know it's a young team, a lot of players playing in Europe, so I think that the adaptation would be fine and I hope when I come into the team they accept me.

"I am looking forward to seeing Victor Osimhen, I like to watch a lot of football and watch the strikers and I think he is a great striker, and I hope I can help him and support him."

After impressing in the Eredivisie, where he scored 18 goals and provided six assists to emerge as joint-topscorer in the Dutch elite division, Dessers penned a four-year deal with Belgian top-flight side Genk.

At the Luminus Arena this season, he has scored two goals in six league appearances for Jess Thorup's men.

Atleti fans' fury at 'tribute to ugliness' kit

Local health authorities blocked the visitors from travelling to the match due to two positive Covid-19 cases among the playing squad

Serie A announced that Juventus have been awarded a 3-0 win over Napoli after the visitors did not travel to Turin for a scheduled match on October 4.

In addition, Napoli have been punished with a one-point deduction for failing to turn up for the game at Allianz Stadium.

Napoli were blocked from travelling to the match by local health authorities after two players, Piotr Zielinski and Eljif Elmas, tested positive for Covid-19 along with a member of staff at the club.

Though Napoli did not travel, Juventus did turn up to the game, which was officially cancelled 45 minutes after kick-off by the referee.

Gennaro Gattuso's side had hoped that the match would be rescheduled, but a judge from Serie A has ruled that "force majeure", the legal term for an extraordinary event or circumstance beyond any party's control, did not exist in this case.

"In the opinion of this sports judge, the case of force majeure is not proven," a statement read.

The judge would go on to indicate that Napoli's impediment from travelling to Turin was evident only on the day of the match, but that the club had already decided in the days leading up to the game that they would not be heading to Turin.

Napoli have indicated that they will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and then to CONI, the highest Italian sports authority.

After the game was postponed, Juve president Andrea Agnelli said that he believed his side should be awarded the win.

"Napoli president [Aurelio] De Laurentiis sent me a message and I replied that [we], as always, abide by the rules," Agnelli said.

"He wanted to postpone the match, but we have regulations that tell us how to proceed. Every industry has its rules and we need to respect them. I don’t think the ASL [local health authority] of Naples can intervene if the FIGC protocol, which refers back to the government’s circular, is not observed at some point. If the protocol changes, we will once again abide by it".

With the result, Juventus move up to fourth in the table while Napoli have dropped down to eighth.

African Super League: Who would make the cut? - African Football HQ

The Black Stars boss reflects on their recent friendly matches against Mali and Qatar

Ghana coach CK Akonnor is looking forward to the return of the likes of Ajax Amsterdam midfielder Mohammed Kudus for 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifying assignments in November.

The 20-year-old, together with Crystal Palace midfielder Jeffrey Schlupp, missed the Black Stars' recent friendly matches against Mali and Qatar due to injury while Sporting Lisbon left-back Lumor Agbenyenu, goalkeeper Richard Ofori Antwi and Egypt-based John Antwi were also absent due to visa-related challenges.

Ghana lost 3-0 to Mali on Friday but responded positively with a 5-1 annihilation of Asian champions and 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar.

"Well it is tough enough to get the players who couldn’t make it onboard for the next game," Akonnor said, as reported by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) official website.

"But the players who came, everybody has shown his talent, what he can do and what he cannot do.

"Most probably, we have around 40 players in our data, it means that when we are going to a match and we look at the strength of the opponent, we look at the qualities we have and what can be efficient and effective for us and we make the call ups.

"But of course, the likes of Kudus, John Antwi, Richard Ofori and Agbenyenu were not here but I believe that some of them will be joining us very soon for the next qualifying game."

Akonnor initially joined Ghana's technical team as an assistant coach before taking over as head coach following the exit of James Kwasi Appiah in January.

Under Appiah, the Black Stars began the Afcon qualifiers on a bright note with wins over South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe in the opening games.

In November, Ghana return to action with matchdays three and four action against Sudan in a double-header.

"Of course, we want to continue from where he left off," Akonnor opined.

"Fortunately for me, I was there before he [Appiah] left and I am continuing from there.

"There is always heat, whether a friendly match or a competitive match and that heat will always be there and we are made of that kind of thing.

"Ghana will not accept any loss and therefore it is important for us to work hard to always achieve success.

"We have got to be alert, the way we do things and I strongly believe that once the boys come in numbers to honour that match, we will do our best to get a win."

The October friendlies were Akonnor's first match assignments at the helm of affairs as Ghana head coach.

With the Serie A 2020-21 campaign underway, still behind closed doors, Goal tells you how to catch the action...

Italy's Serie A was the last of Europe's major leagues to kick off the new campaign on September 19, 2020, having only finished the 2019-20 season at the beginning of August.

Inter's winning start to the Serie A campaign was halted by Lazio in Matchday 3 of the Italian top flight prior to the international break, with both Ciro Immobile and Stefano Sensi sent off.

AC Milan were far from their best against the newly-promoted Spezia but two goals from Rafael Leao helped The Rossoneri on their way to all three points and extend their 100 per cent start.

Elsewhere in Turin, where Cristiano Ronaldo is set to undergo self-isolation after being tested positive for Covid-19, Serie A have announced that Juventus have been awarded a 3-0 win over Napoli after the visitors did not travel for a scheduled match on October 4.

Vaz Pinto to Gor Mahia stars: Thanks for making me a champion

The Ingwe coach now says they will target a strong start to the new campaign to help build a base for winning the title

AFC Leopards coach Anthony Kimani has promised a strong start to the 2020-21 campaign to help end their long wait for a league trophy.

On Tuesday, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) released draft fixtures of the new campaign with AFC Leopards set to start with a home match against Western Stima.

After facing the Powermen, Ingwe will then take on promoted side Bidco United, return home to face Zoo FC, confront Nzoia Sugar, and tackle either Kisumu All-Stars or Vihiga United in their fifth match of the campaign.

On paper, the fixtures look easy for Ingwe who are expected to mount a title challenge after a wait that has stretched for over 22 years now. AFC Leopards finished sixth in the 2019/20 season.

Kimani has now confirmed they will have to hit the ground running with positive results if they are to win their league title soon.

“The team is in good spirits and with new players coming in we believe they have added the much-needed aspects in the team, definitely what we needed in order to have more stability and depth,” Kimani told the club’s official website.

“The goal is to ensure the team picks as many points as possible and this has to start with the opening fixture. We respect all opponents but our aim is to win matches and challenge for the title.”

Although they are yet to confirm the new signings, chairman Dan Shikanda is on record promising they will unleash one of their strongest sides to help win the league title soon, to avoid waiting as long as Liverpool did.

Liverpool won their first title after a 30-year wait and Leopards, who won their last title in 1998 are keen to avoid that length of a period without a trophy.

“Liverpool went for 30 years without a Premier League title. We have gone 22 years and we don’t want to go the Liverpool way. We are keen to build a team that will lift the KPL title sooner,” Shikanda said in a previous interview.

Ingwe have already unveiled their new home kit but eyes are wide open awaiting the new players the club is set to sign.

AFC Leopards are understood to have reached transfer agreements with Harrison Mwendwa from Kariobangi Sharks, former Rayon Sports midfielder Fabrice Mugheni, and ex-KCCA FC offensive midfielder Muzamir Mutyaba.

Leandro Trossard vs Mykhailo Mudryk: Did Arsenal or Chelsea get the better deal?

The German coach made a number of puzzling choices that left more questions than answers ahead of November's Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers

Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with Tunisia drew the curtain on a deeply underwhelming international break for Nigeria and her fans.

Kelechi Iheanacho’s first-half goal, his first for the national team for three years, seemed to presage a much-improved performance from the humbling defeat at the hands of Algeria four days earlier. However, by the end of the opening period, a penalty had been missed, and some all-too-familiar foibles had, once again, arisen.

Even against a Tunisia side given to playing on the break, the Super Eagles were unable to assert themselves upon proceedings.

When faced with the might of (a second-string) Algeria, it was somewhat palatable to be outplayed for periods of the game; Djamel Belmadi’s side are, after all, reigning African champions, and showed their depth and fortitude in holding Concacaf champions Mexico to a 2-2 draw despite being down a man for 40 minutes.

To be so easily manacled by the Carthage Eagles is an altogether tougher pill to swallow.

Some of that was to do with the withdrawals of Wilfred Ndidi, Joe Aribo and Oghenekaro Etebo thinning out the midfield pool. Aribo has enjoyed a strong start to life on the international stage, seeming especially to relish friendlies, and has brought much-needed dynamism to middle of the park; Ndidi and Etebo made up, almost in entirety, Gernot Rohr’s defensive midfield rota. So yes, there were mitigating factors.

However, it was also Rohr’s call to eschew calling up proper replacements, especially when he had Ramon Azeez on the standby list.

That directly played into Semi Ajayi, on whom the jury is still out in his natural position in central defence, deputising in front of the back four for these two matches.

The inability of the West Bromwich Albion man to adapt to the demands of the role were apparent by how often he abdicated his post, and made the decision to discard Frank Onyeka, a natural in the position, even more difficult to understand.

That really is the overwhelming theme from this international window: increasingly, it is difficult to understand Rohr’s decision-making process as far as selection goes.

What was the rationale behind his decision to give Maduka Okoye two starts in the one position where clarity has been difficult to find?

The Sparta Rotterdam goalkeeper was impressive on debut against Brazil in 2019, and looked assured in the Algeria defeat. Surely, Tunisia offered the optimum chance to blood either Matthew Yakubu – who had been earning rave reviews in traning – or former youth international Dele Alampasu.

With Francis Uzoho still working his way back to fitness, and Daniel Akpeyi wildly fluctuating in terms of his output, surely deepening the pool by assessing another option in the second friendly should have been a priority.

Remaining on the subject of odd decisions, how to compute Cyriel Dessers and Chidera Ejuke, two attackers who shone in the Eredivisie last season and earned moves on the back of their showings, receiving a paltry 30-minute window (combined) to stake their claims?

The case of the former, in particular, is a proper head-scratcher; following Paul Onuachu’s fish-out-of-water outing against Algeria, it seemed certain Dessers would get a start against Tunisia. Instead, Ahmed Musa was selected upfront as a lone centre-forward, and despite being predictably ineffectual, he remained on the pitch for 70 minutes.

It was a snub that seemed almost pointed, and it was in that wise that the wonderfully slippery Ejuke took it. Upon coming on, he proceeded to play like he simply did not care, going on a series of dribbles and ducking in and out of cul-de-sacs, the equivalent of Nero fiddling while Rome burnt or, more appropriately, Jay-Jay Okocha japing about at the corner flag at the 1998 World Cup while Denmark cut swathes through Nigeria’s midfield.

Why did Kevin Akpoguma and Chidozie Awaziem get spells – out of position – at right-back while Ola Aina cooled his heels on the bench for all 180 minutes over the course of both matches?

Why did Zaidu Sanusi emerge for the second half against Tunisia at all, seeing that he had made his point already?

Only upon appearing to tweak his groin after the hour-mark was he replaced by Jamilu Collins; a serious injury at this point would be a huge blow, not only to the player, but to FC Porto, who sold first-choice left-back Alex Telles to Manchester United on transfer deadline day.

Rohr’s many idiosyncrasies lent an air of farce to the October international window, and have almost completely wiped out the optimism that had previously haloed the national team.

He will rightly point to these as friendlies: unimportant in the wider scheme, and therefore only useful for experimentation. He would be right, except for the fact that, by his aversion to risk, he managed to defeat the latter purpose, while also giving the lie to the former.

It was a window for trying new things and recapturing the imagination ahead of November’s double-header against Sierra Leone.

While nothing less than six points over those two matches was going to do, by failing to freshen the pot, there is now added pressure on those outcomes, and none of the excitement that new discovery can bring to mitigate it.

Kansas City Current's new NWSL playbook: a $135m investment in the future

Goal can exclusively reveal employees at the regional body have officially been paid their accrued salaries

Pay-day has beckoned - finally - for employees at the Council of East and Central Africa Football Association (Cecafa) secretariat in Nairobi, following months of anticipation.

Goal can exclusively reveal the employees’ accrued dues, dating six months, were settled by the regional body's new secretary-general Auka Gacheo in Nairobi on Monday.

“Yes, we have been paid, and in full,” one of the employees who spoke off the record told Goal. “It was tough going for six months without pay and no explanation but that is now behind us. I hope the situation doesn't recur.”

The development comes three weeks after Goal exclusively laid bare the tribulations at the secretariat, including a rumoured financial crunch affecting the employees.

Those initially affected with delayed salaries include the competitions manager, head of protocol, office manager, messenger, and head of information systems.

“There have been no payments and no explanation from the secretariat. The situation is tough and Covid-19 has made it worse. We hope for an amicable solution to this situation,” the affected employee explained.

These payments were made a few days after member football association presidents met in Arusha to deliberate the way forward following a lull period.

The otherwise active regional body has not managed to organise a single tournament this season but Goal has reliably been informed it was agreed the men, U20 and boys U17 tournaments will be held in Tanzania and Rwanda respectively in November and December.

Cecafa witnessed a change in leadership at the start of the year, as long-serving secretary general Nicholas Musonye was replaced by Auka Gacheo, who is also a Kenyan, while Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) chairman Wallace Karia was elected to serve for a period of four years.

Cecafa was founded in 1927 and has the mandate to improve standards of football in the region. Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zanzibar are the member nations.

Uganda are the current Cecafa Senior challenge cup champions, winning the title in Kampala last year. Uganda’s KCCA FC are the Kagame Cup champions after winning the trophy in Rwanda while Kenya’s women's team Harambee Starlets are the champions in that category after they beat Tanzania in the final held in Dar es Salaam last year.
