Watford confirm Rob Edwards to become head coach from start of 2022/23 season

The Reds started their Champions League campaign with a narrow victory in Amsterdam, much to their relief of their manager

Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp admitted his team didn't play "sunshine football" as they battled to a 1-0 win in their Champions League opener against Ajax.

A first-half own goal from Nicolas Tagliafico was enough for the Reds to secure all three points in Wednesday's match at Amsterdam ArenA in their first match without injured centre-half Virgil van Dijk.

It wasn't smooth sailing for the Premier League champions as they squandered several chances throughout match, while Fabinho was required to make a goal-line clearance and Ajax playmaker Davy Klaasen struck the post.

Klopp acknowledged Liverpool could put in a much better performance but revealed he was just happy to get three points to start their European campaign.

"It was good enough to win the game," Klopp told BT Sport. "That's what you need. I think both teams could play better football.

"At moments it was wild. The pitch was deep and muddy. Three days ago it looked completely different and in training yesterday it looked different.

"We did not take our chances which was a shame. Ajax had a big one which hit the post. When you're 1-0 up, these things can happen, but overall I'm happy with the game. It was not sunshine football but we wanted three points and we got it."

With Van Dijk likely to miss the entire season with a knee injury and Joel Matip also absent, holding midfielder Fabinho deputised in central defence alongside Joe Gomez.

The Brazilian international acrobatically cleared Dusan Tadic's lob off the line in the first half, with goalkeeper Adrian stranded.

Klopp wasn't sure why Fabinho was forced to make the crucial intervention, but spoke of his team's fighting qualities, singling out captain Jordan Henderson, teenage defender Rhys Williams and fringe duo Xherdan Shaqiri and Takumi Minamino.

"I don't know how [Fabinho's clearance] happened in the beginning," Klopp revealed. "That's a good example of how the boys did today. It was not perfect but they fought brilliantly.

"I really liked the fresh legs up front. Jordan Henderson, the medical staff told me no 90 minutes but he did well. Rhys Williams played non-league football last year and now he has some Champions League football so what a moment for him. Some nice stories, three points.

"Xherdan Shaqiri was lively and Takumi Minamino was unbelievable. He is like a machine. It helps when you can make five changes."

RFEF regional presidents ask Rubiales to resign

The midfielder is in no doubt that the 38-year-old still has what it takes to succeed despite being retired for a year and a half

Chelsea midfielder Jorginho believes Petr Cech still has what it takes to succeed after the goalkeeper was a shock inclusion in the Blues' 25-man Premier League roster.

The 38-year-old, who has been serving as a technical and performance advisor following his retirement in 2019, was the fourth goalkeeper named in Frank Lampard's squad.

Chelsea said Cech was included as "emergency goalkeeper cover" and added: "This is a precautionary step due to the unprecedented conditions currently caused by the Covid-19 crisis. He takes up a position as a non-contract player."

However Jorginho believes that the former Czech Republic international could still do a job if called upon after seeing Cech in training with the club in recent weeks.

“I think he can help a lot you know," Jorginho told the Mirror. "He is a legend and he has so much experience so I really think he could help so much in the dressing room and if he has to play he could still do it.

“It would be a pleasure for me to play with him because I have only ever played with him on Playstation!"

Although Cech has only been included as a precaution, Blues head coach Lampard also said he thinks the shot-stopper could still shine at Stamford Bridge.

"Petr has been training with the goalkeepers for a little while now. He has been training a lot of days with them which is valuable for experience [for the other goalkeepers] and that he is passing on that quality to them," the manager explained following Tuesday's 0-0 Champions League draw with Sevilla.

"We had that space in the squad and we know this year, it looks like no other because of Covid and isolation so it was a very easy one. Pete still does his day job and he is there if we need him," Lampard added.

“He is fit, very fit. He is still relatively young. He finished playing when he possibly could have carried on. He has taken on his role at Chelsea very well and he has been very helpful to me and we work closely together. He trains fairly regularly and he is fit."

Nagelsmann 'confident' Goretzka will extend Bayern Munich contract amid Manchester United transfer rumours

The Spain international started in Wednesday's Champions League victory over Porto with his contract set to expire at the end of the season

Pep Guardiola hopes he can convince Eric Garcia to stay at Manchester City after handing the Spain international a start in Wednesday's Champions League victory over Porto.

The 19-year-old is in the final year of his contract and has made it clear that he wants to leave the club and join Barcelona, who tried to sign him during the last transfer window.

Barca made Garcia their priority transfer target but the two clubs could not reach a deal on the final day of the transfer window.

The Spanish giants will make a renewed bid for the defender when the transfer window reopens in January, but Guardiola has not given up all hope that he will remain at the Etihad Stadium.

"I know he wanted to leave but he's going to stay and maybe we can seduce him in this year to extend the contract with us," Guardiola said after the 3-1 victory.

"He's a guy who is so stable in many many things and we are so happy."

With Nathan Ake and Aymeric Laporte injured, Garcia was still something of a surprise starter against the Portuguese champions.

John Stones was left on the bench and only came on for the final few minutes when Fernandinho hobbled off with a knee injury.

Ake was left out after suffering what Guardiola described as "niggles in the groin" on the morning of the match. The City boss decided to leave him out of the squad to rest and recover full fitness.

Laporte, meanwhile, is expected to return to training on Thursday but will face a race to be fit for Saturday's trip to West Ham.

Ruben Dias started his third consecutive game since his £62m ($79m) transfer from Porto's big rivals Benfica.

The Portuguese international was at fault for the opening goal when he gave the ball away with a sloppy pass which was punished by Luis Diaz. However, Guardiola was happy with his defence despite conceding the game's first goal for the first time this season.

“We knew how tough it would be because Porto and Benfica are the best teams in Portugal,” he added.

“They have the winning mentality, they have to win every game.

“I was surprised they played so defensively with five at the back, we had to be patient but in the second half we didn’t concede counter-attacks, we didn’t concede set-pieces, we didn’t allow them to run.

“We did the perfect performance against a really good team. It is nice to win games while suffering.”

Man City 1-1 Sevilla (5-4 on penalties): Player ratings as Champions League winners snatch Super Cup

The Los Blancos boss remains convinced he is the right man for the job in the Spanish capital following Wednesday's defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk

Zinedine Zidane believes he can arrest Real Madrid's slump and restore order amid growing pressure after the club's shock Champions League loss to Shakhtar Donetsk.

Madrid suffered back-to-back home defeats under head coach Zidane for the first time following Wednesday's 3-2 loss against visiting Shakhtar in their Group B opener, having been stunned 1-0 by newly promoted Cadiz in La Liga at the weekend.

Shakhtar led 3-0 at half-time as Madrid conceded three first-half goals in a Champions League match for the first time in 15 years, before Los Blancos rallied through Luka Modric and Vinicius Junior goals in the second 45 minutes - but it was not enough.

Pressure is mounting on Zidane ahead of Saturday's El Clasico showdown against Barcelona after Madrid tasted a third consecutive Champions League defeat for the first time since 1986, but the under-fire boss remains convinced he is the right man for the job in the Spanish capital.

"I see myself capable of fixing this, that's what I'm going to try," Zidane, whose Madrid were eliminated in the Champions League last 16 in 2019-20, said in his post-match interview. "The players are going to try, too. We are going to look for the solution and we're going to find it. Now we have to prepare for Saturday's game [away to Barcelona]."

Out-of-favour forward Luka Jovic – who lasted 59 minutes before being replaced by Vinicius – spearheaded Madrid's attack with Karim Benzema on the bench, while Eder Militao partnered Raphael Varane in the absence of superstar captain Sergio Ramos.

Shakhtar were missing 10 first-team players due to coronavirus but the Ukrainian visitors blew Madrid away in the first half at Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano, where strikes from Mateus Tete and Manor Solomon sandwiched a Varane own goal.

"It's a bad feeling [that we have after this result], of course," Zidane said after Madrid lost their opening Champions League game at home for the first time ever.

"It ended up being a mix of everything. We made a mistake leading up to the first goal and afterwards the truth is that we were missing a bit of confidence, a bit of action, a bit of everything in the first half.

"I am happy for the players who reacted and changed in the second half, because they don't deserve such things. It was a bad game, a bad night. I'm the coach, I'm the one who needs to find a solution, and I'm not going to find it tonight."

He added: "I am responsible and since the first half was negative, I have not done something right.

"The first goal changed everything and [ultimately] cost us, but this [Champions League campaign] has just begun and we are not going to give up."

Simeone addresses Suarez anger after substitution as barren Champions League away run continues

The Chilean could be set for a spell on the sidelines after being taken off at half-time against the Bundesliga side

Alexis Sanchez suffered an adductor injury in Wednesday's 2-2 Champions League draw with Borussia Monchengladbach, Inter confirmed.

Sanchez, making just his second start of the season, was replaced by Lautaro Martinez at half-time after a disappointing opening 45 minutes in the Group B opener.

"Alexis Sanchez came off at half-time during tonight's match after experiencing a problem with his right adductor muscle," the club said on Twitter after the game.

No player completed fewer than his 11 passes during the first half, while the former Manchester United man lost possession eight times and won just one of his nine duels.

Inter were indebted to a 90th-minute equaliser from Romelu Lukaku – his second goal of the game – to salvage a point against Bundesliga visitors Gladbach on matchday one.

Inter head coach Conte refused to be too hard on his players and said the loss of full-back Achraf Hakimi due to a positive coronavirus test shortly before the game had a significant impact on his side's preparations.

"We have to concentrate on doing our best on the pitch," Conte told Sky Sport Italia. "That's all we have to do. It wasn't easy today to receive the news at 5pm that Hakimi was positive.

"Up until this morning, he was training with us. He was meant to start, so we'd prepared all the tactical situations.

"I told the lads to face every situation with heads held high. It wasn't easy on a psychological level, but the lads showed they are good men as well as good players.

"Tonight we did well against a team with a great deal of potential, one that has technical quality as well as physicality.

"I don't remember a Samir Handanovic save, whereas we had the chances to win the game. I have nothing to reproach the lads for.

"Inevitably, we can improve in some situations where there are errors and we have to work on whittling those down."

Lukaku cut a frustrated figure despite his late equaliser and said Inter need to show more resilience after their winless run was extended to three games in all competitions.

The Belgian star has now scored in each of his last nine European fixtures across the Champions League and Europa League (11), extending the longest-ever such run by a player for Inter.

"This is not a good result in my view, because we can do better," he said. "We must keep working and be stronger mentally because it's not an easy moment for us and we have to keep believing in our quality.

"Now we need to be stronger, above all mentally, and do better in defence, as we conceded two goals due to our errors. We made so many mistakes and wasted chances up front too, so if we don't take those we are made to pay at this level."

Mugerwa: Express FC raid Tooro United for services of defender

The Cameroon international has reacted to the Bavarians’ impressive start in the European competition

Eric Choupo-Moting has praised Bayern Munich after securing a 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in Wednesday’s Champions League game.

Kingsley Coman’s brace and strikes from Corentin Tolisso and Leon Goretzka ensured the Bavarians got off to a flying start in the tournament.

Choupo-Moting teamed up with the Champions League and Bundesliga winners this summer after leaving French giants Paris Saint-Germain.

The forward starred for PSG during his two-year stay at the club, inspiring them to the final of the top European competition last season.

The Cameroon international made his debut for Bayern in the competition, replacing Robert Lewandowski with seven minutes left to play and gave a good account of himself.

The 31-year-old has taken to the social media to shower encomium on the fine displays delivered by his side at Allianz Arena.

“Top performance from the team and top start to the Champions League,” Choupo-Moting posted on Instagram.

Choupo-Moting has now made three appearances for Bayern after his man of the match showings on his debut against Duren in a DFB Pokal game and his display against Arminia Bielefeld.

The centre-forward bagged a brace against Duren to help his new clubs claim a comfortable victory at the Allianz Arena.

Choupo-Moting will hope to get more minutes under his belt when Bayern slug it out with Lokomotiv Moscow in their next outing in the tournament on October 27.

The centre-forward had starred for Hamburger SV, Mainz 05 and Schalke 04 before moving to England to join Stoke City in the summer of 2017.

Choupo-Moting left Stoke in 2018 to team up with the Parisians following the Potters’ relegation from the Premier League.

The 31-year-old forward is currently the captain of Cameroon, having been in the national team since 2010 and now has more than 50 appearances for the Indomitable Lions.

The forward will be expected to play a key role for Cameroon in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Ralph Hasenhuttl Admits Southampton 'Must Be Better' After Poor Start

The Gunners boss was responding to the statement issued on Wednesday where the midfielder questioned the club’s loyalty

Mikel Arteta says his "conscience is calm" following his decision to omit Mesut Ozil from his 25-man squad for the Premier League, and the Arsenal boss insists the midfielder's continued absence from his plans has nothing to do with the German’s refusal to take a pay cut in the summer.

The Arsenal boss was responding to the statement Ozil issued on Wednesday where he questioned the club’s loyalty having been told he would not be registered to play in the Premier League for the first half of the season.

"Upon signing my new contract in 2018, I pledged my loyalty and allegiance to the club that I love, Arsenal, and it saddens me that this has not been reciprocated,” said Ozil. “As I have just found out, loyalty is hard to come by nowadays.”

Arteta was asked for his thoughts on the statement ahead of Thursday night’s Europa League opener against Rapid Vienna and reiterated his stance that his decision was purely down to footballing reasons.

“Everybody is free to express his feelings,” said the Arsenal boss. “What I can say from my side is it’s just a football decision, that my conscience is very calm because I’ve been really fair with him. My level of communication with him has been really high and we know what to expect with each other.

“He has had the opportunities like everybody else. I am sad that I had to leave three players out of this list, which is never pleasant, but I just have to say that I tried to look everybody in the eye and be comfortable with it.

“With Mesut I have this feeling because I have been very straightforward since I arrived at this club."

When he arrived at Arsenal in December to replace Unai Emery in December, Arteta seemingly looked set to build his team around Ozil.

His former team-mate went on to start all 11 of the Premier League games Arteta took charge of before the coronavirus pandemic saw football suspended in March.

He hasn’t featured in a single game since, with many believing that was down to his refusal to take a 12.5% pay cut. something the majority of the squad agreed to during lockdown to help the club through such a difficult financial climate. Arteta, however, is adamant that is not the case.

“Honestly I take full responsibility,” he said. “I have to be the one getting the best out of the players. It is my responsibility. It is nothing related to any behaviour or, like I read, the pay cuts. It’s not true. It’s my decision, if someone has to blame me.

“It will happen when we lose football matches - my responsibility. I have to make the decision to get the best possible squad out there to win football matches and competitions as often as we can. In order to do that I try to be fair with him or with any of the players in the squad and defend as much as possible the interests of the club.

“Obviously a player of that dimension, with the career he has had, everything that happens around him has a big impact. It has been the case for the last eight years, it is nothing new that is just happening now. A lot of things have happened over these eight years.

“My job is to get the best out of every player, to contribute to the team performance. Here I feel at the moment, today, that I have failed.

“I want the best possible Mesut for the team. And in some moments I was able to get close to that, and at the moment I have not been able to do it because I have to make the decision to leave him out of the squad.”

LAFC 3-2 LA Galaxy player ratings: Arango delivers dramatic El Trafico Playoffs win

City should not lose sight of the bigger picture here - a winning start to their continental exploits, a tougher-than-expected opponent tamed for the reward of three points in Group C - but that late exit for Fernandinho will have taken the gloss off. Pep Guardiola may be regretting his choice to throw an older, more injury-prone player on late in a game that looked wrapped up; it's a tactic that pays off nine times and then backfires in these freakish ways on the other one.occasion. Let's hope it's nothing too serious for the veteran playmaker.

A sublime Ilkay Gundogan free-kick and a Ferran Torres curler proved to be more than enough to secure the goods for Manchester City as the pair's second-half strikes snagged their side the three points at home against a spirited Porto in the Champions League - but it may have come at a cost for Pep Guardiola's side after Fernandinho pulled up late on. The Blues had struggled to pick the locks of their stubborn visitors after the restart until a golden set-piece chance fell their way - and the young substitute's fine top-corner finish sealed the deal in an enjoyable match. The hosts are on their way in another European campaign; full-time at the Etihad Stadium, it finishes Manchester City 3-1 Porto.

90' + 5' FULL-TIME: MANCHESTER CITY 3-1 PORTO

90' + 2' Is this a problem for City? Fernandinho has barely been on and his game looks like it could be over. It's not a second yellow but worse news - the Brazilian seems to have pulled up clutching his leg in clenched agony. Something is wrong for him there. Pep Guardiola turns away in frustration.

89' It's cruise control time for City as Sterling simply jogs down the touchline with the ball. Porto are refusing to fold into their shell, but their hosts are simply just strolling now.

87' Nakajima whips a cross in off the left edge that just skims beyond Marega near the far edge of the six-yard area. Porto will be disappointed, having held the score level for so long, to have allowed this result to get away with them.

83' Rodri from distance! A Pepe-Sterling clash again sees the two come together and while they are involved in a minor scuffle, the City midfielder lets launch with a 30-yard effort that smashes the woodwork, tipped just onto it by Marchesin.

82' If the eyes do not deceive, Porto have four in attack right now. They might as well go for broke at this stage, of course. The problem is that they are ripe to be countered - and Mahrez sees a shot saved with quick reflexes by Marchesin on the back of such a deceptively fast break.

79' Sarr looks to be down with cramp for Porto now and the visitors may be forced to make their fifth and final change with just over 10 minutes on the clock.

75' This isn't over - if football this season has shown us anything, it is that it is never over - but City will probably feel confident about having secured a winning start here. It's what they deserve, but Pep Guardiola will still have some questions for his side.

72' There's been more than 500 passes by City today. Porto have mustered well under half that many, with just over 200. They might have been passed into submission in the end here.

70' To say the cards have flown liberally tonight, Rodri has just escaped without a booking for a particularly roughhouse attempt of his own. We're into the last 20 minutes, plus injury time to come.

66' Gundogan was reportedly one of the City players set to be subbed off before that free-kick. If he is now, then he has left his mark. He's been one of their better performers tonight. Sergio Conceicao looks less than satisfied with that finish on the touchline.

63' There's action on the City bench, with Phil Foden among those moving around. Vieira is flagged for a foul on Gundogan on the edge of the visitors' box now and the Blues have a dangerous free-kick opportunity. Can this set-piece be their answer?

61' Manafa and Vieira string together a lovely one-two to get around Garcia at the back of the City defence, only for the former's cut-back to leave much to be desired as it falls at the feet of Dias.

59' Now City are flagged for handball - and on the Porto penalty spot no less. Aguero is the guilty party, trying to control a cross from Walker who tore down the right wing with a blistering show of pace to make that delivery. An opportunity comes and goes. How many more will there be in the final half-hour?

57' Oh, that's a bit unfortunate for Corona. The Porto man concedes a free-kick 30 yards out from his own goal for a handball, having managed to head an attempted clearance down onto himself. It's a tough call, but City are ultimately unable to stick their landing as Rodri puts Gundogan's set-piece wide of the right post.

54' Diaz is released on another run down the left flank for Porto, though this one comes to nothing in the end. Both sides are being pulled wider now, opening up - which is likely better news for City than it is the visitors and their attempts to keep their wings compact.

52' City win the first corner of the half after Mbemba is pressured to clear out a ball tucked into his box. Cancelo looks to whip in a strike from a short play, outside the penalty area, but he puts it straight into Marchesin's gloves.

50' Walker is almost caught napping as he tracks down a throw-in inside his own box and nearly plates up the ball for Vieira in front of the box. Down the other end, Gundogan wrestles a difficult ball with a half-volley that forces a testing save from Marchesin. Chances at both ends.

48' In fairness to the visitors, the hosts have been made to work, even with their large share of the ball. Guardiola has made no changes yet; you have to assume he is considering what options he could bring off the bench to open this tie up in his favour.

46' We're back underway for the second half at the Etihad Stadium. Can City turn their statistical advantage into one on the scoreboard? Or will Porto continue to frustrate their best-laid plans?

Pep Guardiola will surely be the most animated man in the building right now - except, perhaps, for his opposite number Sergio Conceicao. The former will be not happy with the way his side conceded that opener and the way they have switched off on occasion since - while the latter will likely want to see his side hold their own in terms of possession more. Plenty to play for here.

A typically strident Sergio Aguero penalty, confirmed by a borderline VAR call, means Manchester City are on level terms at the break against Porto in the Champions League, after the visitors took the lead through a blinding solo effort from Luis Diaz. The Blues have dominated the ball by and large, but they've been unable to crack the code in front of goal themselves and prevent the fast-paced counters that have occasionally threatened a sometime soggy defence. It hangs in the balance; at half-time, it's Manchester city 1-1 Porto.

45' + 3' HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER CITY 1-1 PORTO

45' + 2' Sanusi and Walker are having an excellent ding-dong so far on that flank, if not quite as vocal as the one their managers appear to be on the cusp of having. That could prove crucial after the break.

45' We're getting three minutes of injury time, which seems... lenient, to be honest. The VAR decision alone took more than that.

43' Kyle Walker has saved his side's bacon! Porto, out of nothing, cut through the City box, and with a square ball to Marega, look to have found their second, with Ederson caught out. Yet the defender somehow gets his feet on it near the goal-line and back-heels it to safety. A superb stop by the right-back.

42' City have dominated the ball so far, with 75 per cent of possession. They've not yet missed a golden chance though - and they're possibly lucky to be level.

40' A misplaced header in midfield allows City to break dangerously again and Mahrez sees his strike deflected by Sarr, The subsequent corner results in less pressure this time around as the defender immediately hoofs the ball downfield and away from immediate danger.

38' Bernardo wins something of a lucky corner now as Sanusi fails to keep his wayward ball in. A glancing header from a Porto player takes the ball away to the edge of the box and after some sharp play around the area, Mahrez pulls it back for Aguero, only for Mbemba to intercept and clear.

32' Sanusi! A Mbemba-sparked break for Porto sees the former whip a cross in from the left edge of the box that almost perilously beats Ederson to the right corner. Pep Guardiola takes this moment to have a heated chinwag with captain Sterling on the touchline.

30' City are starting to find the going a little more tough going forward, and they're starting to try and spread their attack as wide as they can. Aguero hasn't quite recovered his pre-injury pace and it is showing on the break.

26' Take a straw poll and City and Porto would probably be considered the two sides to make it out of Group C this season, over Olympiacos and Marseille. The knockout stages would be not short on excitement if they can repeat that spell there though.

24' That was a mad 10 minutes, wasn't it? City appear to have brought a touch of the Premier League's current propensity for passages of absolutely ludicrous play to the European stage.

22' Uribe! That could have been 2-1 to Porto! Ederson taps out an absolute howler of a ball straight to the Porto man on the edge of the box and, perhaps not realising the space he found himself in, he pulls the trigger hastily and blazes it over with just the keeper to beat. City have switched off at the back a few times too many for Pep Guardiola's liking.

19' VAR is still having a look at this, with the question lingering over whether there was a stomp from Gundogan on Marchesin. It's borderline, but City have just got away with it - the penalty stands! Sergio Aguero will be the man to take.

17' What on earth have Porto done here? It's a penalty to Manchester City, as Pepe collides with Raheem Sterling at the back of a crazy few seconds of play around the visitors' box. Gundogan wrong-foots the defence and then appears to take out the keeper Marchesin before he attempts to shoot. It comes off the post and falls back into play, whereupon Sterling is barged to the floor. The referee has awarded the spot-kick but VAR will have a look.

16' Porto have become something as a popular pick-and-mix shop stop for bigger European clubs and Luis Diaz has just put himself in the window for the new year with that brilliant solo effort.

13' City head the resultant set-piece out as far as Diaz, who tries to curl a distant effort into the top-right corner from distance and sends it skimming out of play. A first look at goal for Porto that suggests a touch of promise.

12' Mbemba is nearly found out by Cancelo, who is causing so much nuisance for Porto in these early exchanges. It's pretty much been one way traffic in favour of the hosts - though they do concede a corner now after Garcia has to defuse a Marega break.

10' Corona with the stop again! The defender tracks down a Cancelo ball tipped into the box for Sterling to race after and, in conjunction with his keeper Marchesin, manage to snuff out the danger. City are enjoying that line so far. Mahrez is penalised for a foul on a few moments later, for a push in the Porto box on Sarr.

8' It's a particularly condensed group stage this season thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, and questions will linger over how much of a psychological blow the wrong result could be in these early stages. Porto are, as they were years ago in 2004, underdogs in this competition, but they may hope they can reach the knockout stages once more.

6' City have not quite been the all-conquering side at home this term in domestic competition - new boys Leeds held them to a madcap draw - but they know how to turn on the press with clinical regularity. Sterling surges forward, and Corona again just manages to win the tussle as the England man bears down on him.

4' This Porto back-three, anchored around the veteran Pepe, faces some stern tests tonight, perhaps no more so than Chelsea loanee Malang Sarr. He's one of a clutch of Premier League faces in the frame for the Portuguese club tonight and will be hoping to impress.

2' City are joint-favourites alongside incumbent holders Bayern Munich this season to finally get their hands on the trophy, and they'll be determined to lay down a marker on home soil. Cancelo rumbles forward down the flank, and Corona dislodges him as he approaches the visitors' box.

1' We are underway in this Champions League clash between Manchester City and Porto!

The teams have emerged at the Etihad Stadium for the Champions League anthem. Never gets old, this tune. Never.

The fact Pep Guardiola, with all of his skills and resources, has not been able to match Manuel Pellegrini's success in this competition with City remains a significant stick with which his detractors like to try and hit him with. This is his fifth season in charge - longer than he's spent anywhere else. It could be the dealbreaker for his legacy at the club, this time.

The last time these two sides met was in another European tie, in the 2011-12 Europa League. In that instance, City won on both occasions, by a 6-1 aggregate margin. Can Porto score a spot of belated revenge here?

Subs: Diogo Leite, Mamadou Loum, Mehdi Taremi, Shoya Nakajima, Marko Grujic, Wilson Manafa, Romario Baro, Felipe Anderson, Toni Martinez, Evanilson, Nanu, Diogo Costa.

PORTO (3-4-2-1): Agustin Marchesin; Chancel Mbemba, Pepe, Malang Sarr; Jesus Corona, Sergio Oliveira, Mateus Uribe, Zaidu Sanusi; Fabio Vieira, Luis Diaz; Moussa Marega.

Subs: John Stones, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Zack Steffen, Ferran Torres, Fernandinho, Scott Carson, Phil Foden, Felix Nmecha, Tommy Doyle, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Cole Palmer, Adrian Bernabe.

MANCHESTER CITY (4-3-3): Ederson; Kyle Walker, Ruben Dias, Eric Garcia, Joao Cancelo; Bernardo Silva, Rodri, Ilkay Gundogan; Riyad Mahrez, Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling.

There may be no Kevin De Bruyne, Aymeric Laporte, Benjamin Mendy or Gabriel Jesus for Guardiola tonight, but his City side isn't short of firepower, with Sergio Aguero leading a promising attack on paper. Porto meanwhile have left Mehdi Taremi and Shoya Nakajima on the bench, but they have keys of their own to unlock the opposition defence if they can.

Unlike their hosts, Sergio Conceicao's Dragons have enjoyed a more illustrious affiliation with this tournament, having won the trophy in 2004 following a remarkable underdog run to the final. They were famously coached by one Jose Mourinho then, and defeated a Monaco side coached by Didier Deschamps - but much as City in recent years, they've been no further than the last eight, most recently in 2019 when they fell to eventual champions Liverpool.

It's been just under a decade since the Blues first found themselves above the upper echelon's of the continent's best sides, and four years since two-time winner Pep Guardiola arrived at the helm. Yet in that time, the Spaniard has never been able to better their best result, achieved in 2015-16 when they reached the semi-finals. Instead, he's guided them no further than the quarter-finals. Can he break his own curse this term?

Arango´s stoppage-time winner sends LAFC into Conference Finals past Galaxy, Union edge Cincinnati

Liverpool end their three-game winless run and are level on points with Atalanta at the top of Group D after the Italian side beat Midtjylland in the other game. Next up for them is a visit from Sheffield United in the Premier League. As for Ajax, they face another tough test next week when they face Atalanta in the competition, but before that, they face VVV in the Eredivisie.

Liverpool get off to a winning start in the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Ajax. It was an own goal from Tagliafico that separated the two sides in the end as he turned Mane's scuffed shot into the back of his own net. Ajax had Tadic's shot cleared off the line just before half-time and Klaassen hit the inside of the post at the start of the second half, but the home side just couldn't get onto the scoresheet.

90' + 6' FULL-TIME: AJAX 0-1 LIVERPOOL.

90' + 5' GREAT CHANCE! Tagliafico whips another good cross into the box from the left and Adrian doesn't deal with it properly as he punches it to Ekkelenkamp. He hits the shot first time from the edge of the box but fires it high over the bar.

90' DOUBLE SAVE! It's a wonderful cross from Jota into Wijnaldum on the edge of the box and he drills a shot towards goal, but it's well stopped by Onana. Ajax don't clear their lines though and it comes to Minamino on the right of the box, but Onana is equal to that one as well and sends it wide of the near post.

89' Milner has gone down holding his head after being caught by Traore as they both went for the ball. The medical team are straight onto the field to give him some treatment, but he's quickly back to his feet and will be able to carry on.

88' Tagliafico pulls away from Alexander-Arnold on the left and swings a good cross into the box. Huntelaar flicks it on in the middle and Traore heads it on target, but it's straight at Adrian who holds onto it.

86' Ajax commit a lot of players forward for a free-kick which leaves them open as Liverpool counter. Alexander-Arnold puts a cross in from the right which Minamino can't make contact with, but it runs through to Jota, whose shot is blocked by Martinez.

82' Mazraoui landed heavily on his back after challenging Robertson for the ball on the left and he's stayed down. The referee goes over to check on him, but he's getting back to his feet without needing treatment.

78' Jota nicks the ball of Schuurs on the halfway line and is quickly closed down by Onana who is a long way out of his box. His clearance hits Jota and rolls back towards goal, but the deflection falls kindly for Schuurs who got back into position.

76' Liverpool don't clear their lines properly following a corner and Ajax keep the pressure on. Martinez whips a good cross into the box from the left and Promes flicks his header towards Schuurs but he can't control it to have a shot.

73' CLOSE! Alexander-Arnold swings a good cross into the box from a corner and Wijnaldum rises highest in the middle to reach it. He flicks it on towards goal, but it's just over the bar.

72' CLOSE! Schuurs is a long way out again when he picks up the ball, but he decides to go for goal. He drills his shot towards the top-right corner, but it sails just over the crossbar.

70' SAVE! Minamino finds himself in a pocket of space on the edge of the box and he drills a shot towards goal. He's trying to catch Onana out at his near post, but the goalkeeper gets two hands to it to push it away.

68' Onana's clearance is cut out by Minamino in midfield and Shaqiri turns to make a run into the box. He can't bring the ball down though and Schuurs gets across to nick it off him and get it away from danger.

66' Klaassen plays a good throughball into Tadic and he times his run perfectly to stay onside. He gets the ball stuck under his feet which slows him down and that gives Alexander-Arnold chance to get back and win it back.

64' Ajax are struggling to keep hold of the ball at the moment and can't get out of their own half. Onana looks to go long when he gets the ball back from Martinez but Milner intercepts it and Liverpool are on the attack again.

62' Klaassen is dispossessed on the halfway line by Wijnaldum and Liverpool are on the counter. He plays it through to Jota who makes a run down the left of the box, but he can't pick out Minamino with his cross.

58' GOOD SAVE! Ajax counter-attack with a great move upfield and Liverpool struggle to get back in time. Promes is picked out just outside the box by Mazraoui and his low shot is pushed away at the bottom corner by Adrian.

57' CLOSE! Robertson swings the corner into the box and he picks our Fabinho in the middle. Onana came rushing off his line but missed the cross but he manages to get a touch on Fabinho's header to send it wide of the post.

56' Robertson makes another driving run down the left and gets away from Klaassen. He has to wait for support to join him in the middle though which gives the midfielder chance to get back and put it out for a corner.

54' Liverpool are keeping Ajax penned back in their own half at the moment but they're struggling to get in behind the home side. Robertson makes a run down the left but is dispossessed by Mazraoui before he can put a cross into the box.

52' Schuurs is a long way out from goal when he picks up the ball in midfield, but he spots Adrian off his line and decides to have a go. It's a speculative effort that bounces wide of the far post without troubling the keeper.

50' Mazraoul gets his head up and spots Promes' run through the middle of the Liverpool centre-backs. He plays a long ball over the top to try and pick him out but Adrian rushes off his line to collect it.

48' Schuurs plays a long ball over the top and picks out Gravenberch, who chests the ball down to Promes. He takes it past Alexander-Arnold, but the flag goes up against him as he was offside.

46' OFF THE POST! It's a great start to the second half from Ajax and Klaassen is picked out on the edge of the box. He drills the shot towards goal and it swerves away from Adrian before bouncing off the inside of the post.

46' Ajax get us back underway for the second half!

Klopp will be happy to have the lead at half-time, but his side didn't create too many clear cut chances so far. They looked dangerous going forward without really testing Onana and the manager will expect that to change after the break. As for Ajax, they had some good opportunities in front of goal, but they need to be more clinical if they want to get back into the game.

Liverpool lead through Tagliafico's own goal at the break. Mane brilliantly turned his defender before cutting into the box but he scuffed his shot and it rolled through to Tagliafico who put it into the back of his own net. Ajax have had two great chances to get on the scoresheet, first through Promes who was denied by a good reflex save from Adrian before Tadic's chip was cleared off the line by Fabinho.

45' + 3' HALF-TIME: AJAX 0-1 LIVERPOOL.

45' + 1' Alexander-Arnold picks out Firmino on the edge of the box and he does well to hold up the ball before playing the return pass to the right-back. He swings a good cross into the middle, but Schuurs reaches it first and clears his lines.

44' OFF THE LINE! It's a wonderful throughball from Blind to pick out Tadic's run into the middle of the box. He's one-on-one with Adrian and he chips his shot over the keeper. Fabinho gets back quickly and does brilliantly to make the clearance on the goal line.

42' Ajax are starting to put a bit more pressure on Liverpool again now and Promes swings a great cross into the box from the left. He's looking for Klaassen in the middle, but Adrian comes off his line to punch it clear.

40' Robertson makes a driving run through midfield and the Ajax players can't get close to him. He lays it off to Salah on his right and he takes the shot first time, but Martinez makes a great block in the box.

37' Mane makes another great run down the left before cutting inside to get to the edge of the box. He touches it onto Salah, but he gets the ball caught under his feet which gives Schuurs chance to get back and nick it off him.

33' GOOD SAVE! Tagliafico squares a cross into the middle of the box and Promes touches it onto Neres before continuing his run. He gets the ball back and has a shot from close range, but Adrian stands his ground to deny him.

31' Ajax have a free-kick in midfield and Tadic is standing over it. He tries to float a cross into the box, but there are no runners to get on the end of it and Adrian comes off his line to collect it.

29' Ajax are on the counter-attack with Tadic playing a throughball forward for Promes to chase. Liverpool have a lot of players back though and they smother the chance. It's cleared out to Gravenberch on the left but his cross is punched away by Adrian.

27' It's patient play from Liverpool as the knock it around on the left wing to try and create some space to put a cross into the box. Robertson lays it off to Blind and he turns away from the defender, but he uses his elbow to do it and the move comes to an end.

25' Neres nicks the ball off Gomez on the halfway line and touches it onto Promes. He thinks he's set his side off on the counter-attack, but the referee thinks he fouled the defender and awards a free-kick against him.

23' Liverpool are patiently playing their way out from the back and are trying to get into the final third down the left. Mane turns away from Neres but is then pulled back by Klaassen and wins a free-kick.

21' CLOSE! Liverpool are struggling to deal with Ajax's pressure high up the field and Gravenberch gets in behind them again. He gets past Fabinho and fires his shot towards goal but it's just wide of the near post.

20' Klaassen picks out Tadic with a good throughball into the box but he's forced wide by Adrian. The forward keeps the ball in play and picks out Promes, but his cross back into the middle is cut out by Gomez.

18' Ajax have won just one of their previous seven home games in the Champions League (D2 L4), with two of the last three defeats in this run coming against English opponents - 2-3 v Tottenham in May 2019 and 0-1 v Chelsea in October 2019.

16' Tadic swings a good cross into the box from a corner and he picks out Martinez at the far post. He's heading it back across goal but Adrian holds onto it.

15' Adrian has the ball on the edge of the six-yard box and he's holding onto it because no one is making a run ahead of him. Promes races forward to close him down so he clears his lines, but hits it against the substitute and is looking that nothing comes of it.

13' Liverpool work it upfield well and Robertson plays it inside to Firmino. He spots Alexander-Arnold in space on the right and switches it out to him, but he set off too early and the offside flag goes up against him.

11' Gravenberch plays a good throughball into the box and Promes gets it on the left of the area. He squares it to Klaassen in the middle and he drags it away from Gomez but takes too long to get a shot away and Fabinho nicks it off him.

8' Liverpool are keeping Ajax penned back in their own half now as they try to take advantage of their extra man on the field after Kudus left the field. They're passing it around patiently but can't find a way in behind the home side.

6' Kudus has gone down off the ball and the referee has waved the medical team on to give him some treatment. It looks like a problem with his knee and Ajax could be forced into an early change here.

4' Ajax are keeping the ball well at the moment, but all of their possession is in their own half. Liverpool are pressing them high up the field, but haven't been able to nick it off the home side yet.

2' There's a bit of confusion between Gomez and Adrian as the defender tries to shield the ball to get it back to the goalkeeper. Adrian goes across to it but ends up running into Gomez as he clears it and luckily manages to put it out for a throw.

1' Jones gets the game underway for Liverpool!

The teams are out on the pitch now, with kick-off just moments away.

Liverpool have lost their last two games in the Champions League (both against Atletico Madrid last season); they haven't suffered three consecutive defeats in the competition since October-November 2014 under Brendan Rodgers.

Jurgen Klopp makes four changes to the team that drew with Everton on Saturday and three of those are enforced as Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara are all missing through injury. Gomez, Jones, Milner and Wijnaldum all come into the side and Henderson starts on the bench.

Erik ten Hag makes just one change to the side that beat Heerenveen at the weekend. Martinez comes into the starting line-up, with Traore dropping to the bench.

LIVERPOOL SUBS: Caoimhin  Kelleher, Jake Cain, Divock Origi, Xherdan Shaqiri, Jordan Henderson, Diogo Jota, Vitezslav Jaros, Takumi Minamino, Neco Williams, Rhys Williams.

Rangers confirm loan signing of Amad Diallo from Man Utd

The Bosnian led the Kawangware club back to the top-tier after four seasons in the second division

Nairobi City Stars head coach Sanjin Alagic has revealed his main priority in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League.

The tactician helped the Simba wa Nairobi earn promotion back to the top-tier after a superb campaign in the National Super League. They were leading in the NSL when the FKF ended the season in May as they had amassed 64 points from 28 games.

The Bosnian has already returned after months away from his charges as he had travelled to Sarajevo just after the league was cancelled. He has returned to take charge of the pre-season training sessions with his players who have not kicked a ball in a competitive game in the last seven months.

“Our target in our first season back is to make City Stars a stable Premier League outfit, one that will develop young players to a national level with the aim of transferring some players to clubs abroad,” Alagic told the club’s website.

“We will stay focused and humble. It’s great to be back as it has been a long time out without football.”

The schedules for the FKF Premier League have already been released alongside the dates the competition is expected to begin and end.

The NSL champions will be welcomed to the league by teams from the Western Region in the first five opening games. Their opener will be against Nzoia Sugar, who have made a number of signings following the 2019/20 struggle.

“We are happy to be back in the Premier League after four years and we can’t wait to get the season started with our first game against Nzoia Sugar,” the Uefa Pro coach added.

“We want to prepare for that first game like it’s a final then take it game by game after that.”

The coach also praised the changes the club underwent before that he said brought stability and good results.

“Last season the club restructured and became very stable and organised and we are happy to continue with what we started then into the new seasons,” he concluded.

“We want fans to be aware of this and we are asking them for their support as we journey back into the Premier League.”

Nairobi City Stars have been fighting for promotion back to the top league since they were relegated at the end of the 2016 season.

Real Madrid 2-3 Shakhtar Donetsk: Visitors survive 'nightmare' to stun LaLiga champions

Real Madrid 2-3 Shakhtar Donetsk: Visitors survive 'nightmare' to stun LaLiga champions

Shakhtar Donetsk claimed a famous win at Real Madrid despite missing a host of first-team players for their Champions League opener.

Real Madrid suffered a remarkable opening Champions League defeat as Shakhtar Donetsk, missing 10 first-team players due to coronavirus, held on for a 3-2 away success.

Wednesday's Group B clash seemed to be set up for a straightforward Madrid win, with Shakhtar clear underdogs even before losing half their squad to COVID-19 in a situation coach Luis Castro described as "a nightmare".

But Zinedine Zidane's LaLiga champions were outthought and outfought for 45 minutes at their temporary Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano home as strikes from Mateus Tete and Manor Solomon sandwiched a Raphael Varane own goal to secure a three-goal half-time lead.

Madrid also lost at home to Cadiz last Saturday and visit bitter rivals Barcelona in the Clasico this weekend yet at least showed some fight after the break.

Efforts from Luka Modric and Vinicius Junior set up a grandstand finish, but Federico Valverde's apparent equaliser in stoppage time was disallowed for offside as Shakhtar survived for a sensational victory.

The Ukrainian outfit should have led even before they did as Marlos ran clear and had time to pick his spot but sent an awkward effort into Thibaut Courtois' legs.

It was not a miss the makeshift visiting side were made to pay for, though, as they repeatedly dismantled a dismal Madrid defence, Tete sliding in an assured finish for the first before having a hand in the next two.

Courtois spilled Tete's shot at the feet of Dentinho, prompting Varane into a desperate lunge that succeeded only in turning the ball past his own goalkeeper, and the winger's cute backheel then teed up Solomon to make it three.

Madrid were much improved following the restart but still scarcely threatened until Modric's sublime strike, finding the top-right corner from 25 yards.

That flicker of hope should have been swiftly extinguished by Tete, yet the star of the first half somehow blasted wide after running onto Viktor Korniienko's cutback.

By contrast, Vinicius was clinical at the other end, emerging from the bench to score with his first touch as he stole possession from Marlos and swept into the net.

Tete squandered another opportunity, shooting straight at Courtois, and was then just offside before squaring for Marlos to net what Shakhtar thought was a clincher.

Valverde's deflected 92nd-minute attempt squirmed past Anatolii Trubin to seemingly deny Castro's men, but Vinicius - stood in front of the keeper - was offside and Madrid were beaten.

What does it mean? Crisis looming ahead of Clasico

Well, that did not take long. Madrid were crowned LaLiga champions just three months ago and are already facing a potentially make-or-break fixture on Saturday when they make the trip to Camp Nou.

If Zidane's men play again as they did in the opening 45 minutes here, when they gave up four shots, all on target and all from inside the box, they are unlikely to find Lionel Messi in forgiving mood.

Tete takes centre stage

Starting wide on the right, Tete's ability to drift inside and combine with team-mates caused Madrid all sorts of problems. His only key pass was the gorgeous assist for the third, but he was involved in almost every away move.

Second-half wastefulness threatened to undo his hard work, yet Tete also defended from the front, making two tackles and an interception, as well as contesting 20 duels.

Misery for Madrid's Marcelo

A series of right-back injuries have seen Ferland Mendy moved across from the left-hand side of the defence, meaning Marcelo must start. But this was a punishing experience for the veteran.

Marcelo was dragged out of position for goals one and three, the victim of much of Tete's best work, although he did make three tackles and timed a late offside trap to deny his opponent on the counter.

Key Opta Facts

- Real Madrid have lost three consecutive matches in the European Cup/Champions League for the first time since September 1986.
- Shakhtar Donetsk are the first Ukrainian side to win against Madrid in the Champions League since Dynamo Kiev's 2-0 victory in March 1999. Neither of Shakhtar's two scorers - Tete and Solomon - were born then.
- Madrid shipped three first half goals in a Champions League game for the first time since September 2005 against Lyon, and the first time in a home game since February 2000 against Bayern Munich.
- Vinicius scored for Madrid just 15 seconds after coming on as a substitute – this is the fastest such goal in the Champions League since 2006-07 (when Opta first collected this data).
- Madrid have lost seven of their past eight Champions League matches that have not featured Sergio Ramos.

What's next?

Madrid simply must respond against Barca in a bid to get their season back on track. Shakhtar, third in their domestic league, go to second-placed Vorksla earlier on Saturday.

'Atletico Madrid has been one of my dreams' - Arsenal loanee Torreira open to permanent stay in Spain

The midfielder says he is delighted to be playing for the Liga side while reflecting on last season with the Gunners

On-loan midfielder Lucas Torreira says he is open to a permanent move to Atletico Madrid after dealing with some "personal problems" during his time with Arsenal.

Torreira moved to Arsenal in 2018, signing from Sampdoria in a deal worth £26 million (€30m/$34m).

However, the signing of Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid paved the way for Torreira to head the other way, with the Uruguayan set to spend at least one season with the Spanish side.

Atleti has long been a landing spot for some of Uruguay's best, with Diego Godin, Diego Forlan, Jose Gimenez and Luis Suarez all representing the club. Torreira is the latest in that list, and he says playing for the club is a dream come true.

“I know that I am a year on loan,” Torreira told Ovacion Digital. “I've been there for four or five days and it seems like it's a lot, because I've been treated very well.

“It is a new opportunity in my life, in which I have fought a lot, because Atlético has always been one of my dreams, one of my goals as a team, and being able to achieve it at the age of 24 is something very important.

“It all depends on how I go during the season, which I hope is very good, and maybe in the future I can stay in the club.”

The midfielder made his Atleti debut against Celta Vigo, starting in what ended up as a 2-0 win for his new side.

Torreira went on to admit that he was not pleased with his last season at Arsenal, which saw him make 39 appearances in all competitions. He attributed part of those struggles to personal problems, but he is hoping his move to Atletico Madrid can help him refocus and rediscover his best.

“This last season at Arsenal, on a personal level, has not been good for me at all,” he added. “I have suffered a lot of things, I have had a lot of personal problems and more than anything my family also suffered.

“With this adventure [at Atletico] everyone is very happy. The most important thing is to be able to enjoy on the pitch, to be able to help teammates and make the fans happy, because in the end, football is just that.”

Eto’o anticipates ‘dramatic' game between Real Madrid and Barcelona despite fans ban

The former Cameroon international feels the El Clasico showing will live up to expectations although it would be played behind closed doors

Samuel Eto’o is looking forward to a "dramatic" game between Real Madrid and his former club Barcelona on Saturday.

The game will be played behind closed doors as fans remained banned from match venues in Spain due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Both teams have enjoyed success in the domestic front with Barca winning 26 La Liga titles while Real has clinched the trophy 34 times and are currently reigning champions following their success last season.

Barcelona have won 20 of their previous El Clasico meetings while the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu outfit have triumphed 14 times.

Although the encounter at Camp Nou will be played in an empty stadium, Eto’o believes the match will live up to expectations.

“Such a wonderful pitch without the fans it’s going to be a little bit strange,” Eto’o told Goal at the La Liga presentation Gala.

“This is a unique game and I am sure the players will do their best to do something dramatic on the pitch."

Eto’o also believes Youssoufa Moukoko could be a successor to Lionel Messi at Barcelona, given the impressive showings of the young forward for the club’s youth setup.

“[There’s] a young player who plays for Dortmund called Youssoufa Moukoko,” he said. [He’s] 15 years of age, and he’s the next top player, for me, after Messi.

“As Messi gets older, we could prepare the future of Barcelona very well.”

Eto’o spent five years with Barcelona before leaving for Italy to team up with Serie A giants Inter Milan in the summer of 2009.

During his time at Camp Nou, the centre-forward scored 108 league goals in 144 appearances, amid other dazzling displays.

The former Cameroon international played a key role as Barca won a number of accolades, including three La Liga titles, two Champions League diadems, Copa del Rey and Supercopa de Espana titles.

Eto’o also played for Anzhi Makhachkala, Chelsea, Everton, Sampdoria and Antalyaspor and last featured for Qatar SC.

He first came into prominence as a precocious teen and made a handful of appearances for Real Madrid after playing for the 'B' team earlier.

'This is not politics, this is humanity' - Rashford slams UK Government after free school meal extension bid fails

The England forward has expressed his disappointment with the vote, saying he will continue to serve as a voice for underprivileged children

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has hit out at the UK Government after a vote to extend free school meals over the holidays until Easter 2021 was defeated on Wednesday.

In June, Rashford successfully lobbied the government to extend its policy of providing free meals for underprivileged children into the summer months through the school holidays.

Rashford's work in helping to tackle child hunger led to the England international being awarded an MBE in the Queen's birthday honours earlier this month, but Wednesday saw his cause dealt a defeat in the Commons as the Labour vote to extend free school meals was defeated 322 to 261.

After the vote, Rashford took to Twitter to register his disappointment at the outcome.

"Put aside all the noise, the digs, the party politics and let's focus on the reality," Rashford wrote. "A significant number of children are going to bed tonight not only hungry but feeling like they do not matter because of comments that have been made today.

"We must stop stigmatising, judging and pointing fingers. Our views are being clouded by political affiliation. This is not politics, this is humanity.

"We talk about the devastating impact of Covid-19 but, if projections are anything to go by, child food poverty has the potential to become the greatest pandemic the country has ever faced.

"We must start working together and unite to protect our most vulnerable children. No more sticking plasters.

"Let's face this head on. Let's level up once and for all. The asks of the Child Food Poverty Taskforce remain the same. We are endorsing Government-commissioned policy recommendations that were built from extensive research and data analysis.

"These policies are vital to stabilising millions of households across the UK and need to be implemented without delay. Child hunger should never be faced with looming deadlines.

"We need a long-term sustainable framework, and thanks to the 300,000+ signatures, we will now be offered the opportunity to discuss this."

The striker has invited Downing Street to meet with his taskforce to discuss next steps.

"Following private and public approaches, I once again invite Number 10 to sit around the table with the taskforce so that, together, we can collaborate on how best to combat child food poverty in the UK," he added. "We are here to help, but we require guidance and insight from those in Number 10.

"I don't have the education of a politician, many on Twitter have made that clear today, but I have a social education having lived through this and having spent time with the families affected.

"These children matter. These children are the future of this country. They are not just another statistic, and for as long as they don't have a voice, they will have mine. You have my word on that."

Antonio Habas: ATK Mohun Bagan need more respect from the referees

The Zimbabwean tactician expects the lethal marksman to continue scoring goals for the Tshwane giants in the new season

SuperSport United head coach Kaitano Tembo says striker Bradley Grobler has not been affected by a failed move to Orlando Pirates.

The Bafana Bafana international was expected to join the Buccaneers during the recent 2019/20 season, but a transfer to the Hughton-based giants failed to materialize.

Grobler stayed put at Matsatsantsa and he scored goals with ease as he finished the campaign with 17 goals from 34 matches across all competitions.

Tembo explained that Grobler has managed to maintain his good performances as he always stays professional.

“Look Bradley is a professional and what’s important is for him to be happy here and I think he’s happy," Tembo told the media.

"Irrespective of what might happen and what might not happen. He's always stayed professional, who knows that his value is always maintained by him performing well."

The 32-year-old, who is one of the most lethal centre-forwards in the country, hit the back of the net 14 times in the league which was his best ever goal return in the top-flight.

Grobler started the new 2020/21 season with a goal as SuperSport secured a 3-2 win over Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila in the MTN8 quarter-final match last weekend.

Tembo expects Grobler to continue scoring goals for Matsatsantsa, who have been pitted against Bloemfontein Celtic in the two-legged MTN8 semi-finals.

“I don’t see any problems and I never thought I would see any problems because I know the type of player that he is and I anticipate another good season in terms of his form and scoring goals," he added.

"Remember Bradley is not only important for us in terms of scoring goals. He’s also important in terms of our attacking structure. He’s what we need in terms of leading our front line."

On Tuesday night, security operatives shot at civilians who were protesting against police brutality

Football stars including Mario Balotelli, Michael Essien, Yannick Bolasie, Ahmed Musa, William Troost-Ekong, Alex Iwobi and Antonio Rudiger have condemned the shooting of peaceful protesters at the Lekki Toll Plaza in Lagos, Nigeria.

Hundreds of unarmed civilians were shot at by soldiers on Tuesday night as they demanded an end to police brutality in the country.

Over the past week, Nigerians have taken to the streets to call their leaders for good governance and express their displeasure against harassment, extra-judicial killings by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) - a unit in the Nigeria Police Force which was recently disbanded.

Prior to the disbandment of the SARS unit a fortnight ago, Arsenal's Mesut Ozil, Chelsea's Tammy Abraham and Manchester United's Marcus Rashford were among the players who lent their voices to the protest.

After seeing videos of Tuesday's shootings circulate on social media with dozens of people injured, the football stars could not hide their emotions and they joined Manchester United's Odion Ighalo in condemning the government's actions.
