Nigerian goal machine set to agree terms with Mohammedan...

Raphael Ownrebe is set to sign for Mohammedan Sporting, Goal can confirm.

The Nigerian forward had been plying his trade in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) since 2017 when he joined Sheikh Jamal. In his maiden season in Bangladesh, he was the top-scorer of the league with 15 goals. He also had nine assists to boot.

In the next season, he was snapped by Sheikh Russel FC. He continued his rich vein of form in his new stomping ground as well. He bagged 22 goals in the 2018-19 season and once again won the golden boot for the second time in a row.

He was a prolific goalscorer back in Nigeria as well, where he played for First Bank FC. In 2015, he scored 20 goals and assisted 11 times in just 25 games. In the next campaign, he joined Bayelsa United F.C.and was involved in 26 goals in just 20 appearances.

Ownrebe likes to play as a centre forward but is equally comfortable to play in the wide areas in a front-three.

Mohammedan Sporting have already announced Jose Carlos Rodriguez Hevia as their head coach for the 2020-21 I-League season. The 48-year-old previously held the post of technical director of coaching and youth development at Shillong Lajong FC until August this year.

Having started his coaching career in Spain with clubs such as UD San Claudio, CD Manuel Rubio and A.D.Gigantes, Jose's first expedition in India was as technical director of the Arsenal Soccer Schools based in Pune back in 2014. During this stint, he was also associated with the FC Pune City (now Hyderabad FC) support staff.

Andres Iniesta reveals when he's planning to return to Barcelona

The promoted Simba wa Nairobi have remained active in the transfer window as they unveil another new signing

Nairobi City Stars have beefed up their goalkeeping department after signing Steve Njunge Ndungu from Wazito FC.

Ndungu has arrived at the promoted side on a two-year contract and will be a direct replacement for Levis Opiyo, who left the club to sign for FKF Premier League champions Gor Mahia after running down his contract.

City Stars have confirmed the signing of Ndungu on their official website by stating: “Goalkeeper Steve Njunge Ndungu, formerly with Wazito, is the latest player to join Nairobi City Stars, on a two-year deal.

“The experienced Njunge fills up a slot vacated by Levis Opiyo who ran down his contract at the close of last season and moved on.

“His arrival reunites him with his former goalkeeper trainer Zachary Onyango and keeper-mate Jacob Osano.”

City Stars team coordinator Samson Otieno welcomed the signing of the player by explaining: “Steve [Ndungu] comes with loads of experience gained at Wazito and immediately becomes an important part of the team.

“Our goalkeeping department was short of numbers but now with Njunge in, the count of keepers now improves to three besides Osano and teenager Elvis Ochoro."

On joining Simba wa Nairobi, Njunge, a former Euro Juniors, National Youth Talent Academy and FC Talanta player who will wear jersey number 23, said: “The team has a great vision, and I am happy to be part of it. I want to work hard to help City Stars maintain its status in the league.”

City Stars have been very active in the transfer window as they seek to beef up their squad in readiness for the 2020-21 season which is scheduled to kick off on November 20.

Simba wa Nairobi, who were promoted to the top-flight alongside Bidco United, will open their campaign at home against Nzoia Sugar at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, November 22 at 14:00. It will be their first game in top-flight football since 2016.

Their second game will be at Kericho Green Stadium a week later against their hosts Zoo FC. On Friday, December 4, Simba wa Nairobi will be hosting either Kisumu All-Stars or Vihiga United at Nyayo Stadium.

Kakamega Homeboyz, who finished second in the abandoned 2019/20 season, will be hosting the Nairobi-based side at Bukhungu Stadium on Wednesday, December 9. The fifth game for Stars is scheduled for December 13 against Western Stima at Nyayo Stadium.

Everton Women Aiming to Repeat 2010 FA Cup Success After a Decade in the Wilderness

Bucs are targeting a morale-boosting win ahead of this weekend's Soweto Derby, but Stellies could prove to a tough nut to crack

Orlando Pirates will welcome Stellenbosch FC in a Premier Soccer League (PSL) match at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday.

Bucs are determined to secure their maiden win of the new 2020/21 PSL season after they saw their four-match winning run come to an end when they drew 1-1 with AmaZulu FC over the weekend.

The winning run included the MTN8 quarter-final victory over Cape Town City and coach Josef Zinnbauer will be keen to mastermind a win over Stellenbosch heading into Saturday's big clash with Kaizer Chiefs.

Pirates will take on a struggling Stellenbosch side which is winless in their last five matches after holding Swallows FC to a 1-1 draw over the weekend.

Coach Steve Barker will be eager to lead Stellies to a win over the Buccaneers and avenge last month's 1-0 defeat to the Soweto giants which ended their hopes of finishing in the top eight on the last day of the season.

Pirates have announced that Wayde Jooste is set to undergo a late fitness test to determine his availability for the clash against Stellenbosch.

While Zinnbauer's side will be without Collins Makgaka, Tshegofatso Mabasa and Bongani Sam as the trio are nursing injuries, but they do not have players on the PSL's midweek suspension list.

The German tactician will look to last season's PSL Golden Boot award winner Frank Mhango, who opened his scoring account for the new campaign against AmaZulu.

Meanwhile, Stellenbosch will welcome back Ashley Du Preez after the speedy forward missed the clash against Swallows due to suspension.

However, Mpho Matsi is still out nursing a long-term injury which the experienced holding midfielder picked up in the bio-bubble, although Robyn Johannes has often being deployed in midfield and the defender netted against Swallows.

The player to watch out for in Barker's side is Lelethu Skelem, who was one of the most in-form players in the bio-bubble as netted against Chiefs, Cape Town City and AmaZulu.

Match Preview

Pirates are enjoying a four-match unbeaten run in the league - registering three successive wins and one draw.

The Soweto giants are also undefeated in their last four home matches in the competition having recorded two wins and two draws.

While Stellenbosch are enduring a five-match winless run in the league having registered four draws and one defeat.

The Western Cape-based side is also winless in their last four away games in the competition - recording three defeats and one draw.

In head-to-head stats, Pirates and Stellenbosch have met just two twice in the league with both teams clinching one win each.

Stellenbosch won 1-0 at home in the first round clash in October 2019 last season, but Pirates ran out 1-0 winners in the second round encounter in September 2020.

Xavi: Loss to Madrid won't 'tarnish' LaLiga title

The midfielder scored a superb winning goal against the Russian outfit in a match that pushed the defending champions to the limit

Joshua Kimmich said Champions League holders Bayern Munich were "lucky" to come away with a win after he scored decisively in a 2-1 victory over Lokomotiv Moscow.

Kimmich struck in the 79th minute to clinch a record-extending 13th consecutive Champions League victory for the Bundesliga and European champions, but the Bayern star admitted they did not have it all their own way at RZD Arena.

Lokomotiv spurned a chance to take the lead before Leon Goretzka opened the scoring in the 13th minute, and the hosts did find the net through Anton Miranchuk on Tuesday.

The equaliser set up a tense finish in Moscow and Kimmich's quality shone through as he lashed home the winner from 20 yards, before praising his opponents in his post-match comments.

"I thought Lokomotiv had a great game," Kimmich, who has either scored (two) or assisted (five) seven of Bayern's last 15 goals in the Champions League, told reporters.

"They were good in transition, attacking with some fast players. It was not easy in the second half but in the end we were lucky to come out with the win.

"[It was] a really hard-fought victory. We didn't play badly, but we should have finished it off earlier.

"We scored quite early on, almost from nothing, but didn't really have a clear chance to get the second, especially after the break. They had some dangerous counters, but in the end we are happy to win despite not being at our best."

Bayern's opening goal came courtesy of a neat piece of play in which Corentin Tolisso played a chipped pass to Benjamin Pavard, whose volleyed cross was steered into the net by Goretzka.

Head coach Hansi Flick praised Bayern's application of an approach they had prepared on the training ground.

"It's one way that we try to break down teams that sit deep and defend," Flick said of his side's first goal.

"It worked well once or twice and came off sensationally for the goal.

"It was a hard-fought win, gritty if you like. Moscow did well, they defended very deep and worked with the long balls, which hurt us one or two times.

"But overall, I think we can say the 2-1 win was deserved, even if it wasn’t as clear as we'd hoped for."

Bayern remain unbeaten in their last 14 away European games – in European Cup/Champions League history only Manchester United (16) have gone longer without defeat on the road.

Brazil great Pele back in ICU for reflux

The manager aid he was proud of his players after they drew 2-2 with the German side but predicted a tough term ahead

Zinedine Zidane predicted a difficult season for Real Madrid after Casemiro's 93rd-minute goal spared the stuttering La Liga holders an embarrassing Champions League defeat at Borussia Monchengladbach.

Marcus Thuram's brace gave hosts Gladbach the lead at Borussia-Park but late strikes from Karim Benzema and Casemiro averted a record fourth consecutive European loss for Madrid with a 2-2 draw on Tuesday.

Gladbach became the 30th different opponent Benzema has scored against in the Champions League – only Lionel Messi (36), and Cristiano Ronaldo and Raul (both 33) have scored against more teams in the competition's history.

The comeback did little to paper over the cracks in a chaotic Madrid performance that was strewn with defensive mistakes against the Bundesliga side.

Despite seeing Madrid struggle for the second time in as many Champions League games, following a 3-2 defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk the previous week, head coach Zidane defended his players.

"We didn't think this would be such a drama," Zidane told reporters. "But my team showed that they know how to react.

"I thought we were very good in the first half. The big pain is that we committed a serious error in how we conceded their first goal.

The result leaves Madrid with one win, one draw, and two defeats from their last four games in all competitions, and Zidane must prepare for back-to-back home games against Huesca in La Liga and Inter in the Champions League.

Failure to take maximum points in those games could leave the Frenchman's position under threat but Zidane said the character shown by his players left him confident.

"We didn't transform the possession we enjoyed into proper chances," said Zidane, whose Madrid avoided defeat in a Champions League away fixture having trailed by two goals for the first time since December 2006.

"What I'll take from this experience is how these players reacted. This was a very important point to secure.

"This is going to be a difficult year for everyone, but I'm proud of my team tonight. Playing like this we'll go through the group to the next round without any doubt."

Nottingham Forest 2-3 Fulham: Visitors come from behind to earn crucial win

The Portuguese talent scored twice in the win against the Austrians and his coach was delighted with his performance

Diego Simeone hailed a "complete" performance from Joao Felix after his double helped Atletico Madrid to a 3-2 Champions League win over Salzburg on Tuesday.

Simeone's men bounced back in style from last week's opening 4-0 defeat to Bayern Munich to register their first points in Group A.

They did so largely thanks to a wonderful display from 20-year-old Joao Felix, who made it 2-2 early in the second half before securing all three points five minutes from time with an improvised finish.

His two goals came from seven shots - four more than any other Atleti player - while he competed in a joint team-high of 20 duels, winning 65 per cent of them.

Simeone was delighted with his display and backed him to continue delivering on the big stage for Atleti.

"If he continues to show the commitment, speed, and decision making he did today then he will continue to grow," he told reporters.

"Hopefully we can help him because with a great Joao Felix the team will be more competitive. It was possibly the most complete performance due to the importance of the game, but he has played many good ones."

Before Joao Felix's late heroics, Atleti had gone ahead thanks to Marcos Llorente's powerful drive shortly before the half-hour mark.

It was the former Real Madrid man's third goal of the season - just two fewer than he managed in the entirety of the 2019/20 campaign.

Asked if the 25-year-old could be suited to a more advanced position, Simeone responded: "We are looking for a way to bring together those players who are playing well and who can provide what the team needs. Llorente is one of them.

"He's feeling better offensively, but you have to remember that he came as a midfielder. I could try it in the future because he has the energy, strength, work rate and shooting ability."

Trent Alexander-Arnold explains why Liverpool lost at Bournemouth

The Burkina Faso international got his maiden goal in the European elite club competition against the Serie A giants at the Gewiss Stadium

Two records tumbled for Lassina Traore who scored his first Champions League goal in Ajax’s 2-2 draw versus Atalanta on Thursday.

Having scored five and assisted three goals in Erik ten Hag’s men 13-0 decimation of VV Venlo on Saturday, he was handed his first ever start in the competition against Gian Piero Gasperini’s men.

In the process, the 19-year-old became the 30th different teenager to start a Champions League match for the 34-time Eredivisie kings – the most of any team in the competition’s history, overtaking Arsenal who are on 29.

The Burkina Faso international justified his place in the starting XI by having a hand in the goals scored by the Dutch team. In the 28th minute, he won a penalty for Ajax having been fouled by Robin Gosens who attacked him with a high boot while trying to clear a cross from Dusan Tadic.

Tadic converted the resulting kick after beating goalkeeper Marco Sportiello. Traore doubled his side’s advantage in the 38th minute after slotting home a rebound from Sportiello’s initial save.

That made him become the seventh African teenager to net on his first start in the tournament. Maxwell Cornet was the last African to achieve that feat – finding the net as Lyon defeated host Valencia 2-0 on December 9, 2020.

Despite going into the half-time break with a two-goal advantage, Atalanta put up a fine showing in the second half to ensure the game ended on a no winner, no vanquished note thanks to Duvan Zapata’s quickfire brace.

Traore was in action from start to finish alongside Cameroon international Andre Onana. Morocco defender Noussair Mazraoui was handed a starter’s role but was substituted in the 56th minute for Sean Klaiber.

Mazraoui’s compatriot Zakaria Labyad replaced Anthony in the 90th minute as Burkina Faso’s Hassane Bande was not listed for the game.

Thanks to this result, Ajax are third in Group D with one point from two games - five points behind leaders Liverpool who subdued Midtjylland 2-0 at Anfield.

The Burkinabe teenager would be hoping to continue with his rich scoring form when the Sons of the Gods welcome Fortuna Sittard to the Johan Cruyff Arena on Saturday before visiting Midtjylland three days later in the Champions League.

Germany beat Portugal to win 2021 European Under-21 Championship

Romelu Lukaku was unable to add to his scoring streak as Inter, who twice hit the crossbar, were held by Shakhtar Donetsk.

Inter remain without a win in Champions League Group B after they were held to a goalless draw by Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday.

Antonio Conte's men thumped the same side 5-0 two months ago in last season's Europa League semi-finals but were unable to find a way through at the Kiev Olympic Stadium.

Romelu Lukaku had scored in nine straight European matches for Inter and came closest to making the breakthrough, his free-kick being pushed onto the bar by Anatolii Trubin.

Nicolo Barella also struck the crossbar in the first half and Lautaro Martinez missed a glorious opportunity early in the second as Inter followed up last week's 2-2 with Borussia Monchengladbach with another underwhelming point.

Shakhtar held on to stun Real Madrid 3-2 in their opening group game but they had Trubin to thank for keeping them level against Inter.

Barella sent a first-time shot against the frame of the goal from the edge of the 18-yard box after Lukaku had been denied by the teenage keeper.

Lukaku was then left with a look of disbelief on his face nine minutes before the interval as his free-kick was kept out by the fingertips of Trubin, who only turned 19 in August.

The chances continued to fall Inter's way as Trubin parried Marcelo Brozovic's powerful drive into the path of Martinez, who fired the rebound wide from six yards.

Lukaku had a penalty shout rejected for a tug on his shirt from Valerii Bondar as Shakhtar, still without a number of first-team players due to a coronavirus outbreak in the camp, saw out proceedings to secure another impressive European result.

Barcelona transfers: Four fringe players 'will leave' Camp Nou this summer

Porcupine Warriors communications director Moses Antwi Benefo speaks on possible business ahead of transfer deadline day

Asante Kotoko communications director Moses Antwi Benefo reveals the club are not ruling out making new acquisitions, despite already sealing deals for nine players ahead of the 2020-21 Ghana football season.

The Porcupine Warriors are unarguably among the most active clubs in the domestic transfer market which closes on Saturday.

Brazilian midfielder Fabio Gama Dos Santos is the Kumasi-based side's latest signing, his transfer announced on Friday.

“That [any more new signings] will definitely depend on the recommendation we get from the technical team and whether we are going to get the players that we have targeted or not,” Benefo told Citisports.

“If we are able to get the signatures of the players we have targeted, then of course.

“The management and the Board are obliged to provide players that the coach has recommended to the technical team, so they can give us the desired result.

“If they meet recommendations between now and the 31st of October when the local registration ends, and the players are available, we will just engage them, get them on board, so that the coach can also give the desired results, so that the fans can be happy."

Nkoranza Warriors midfielder Emmanuel Sarkodie, former Ashanti Gold defender Yussif Mubarik, Karela United midfielder Emmanuel Keyekeh, former Atalanta of Italy player Patrick Asmah and Ghana goalkeeper Razak Abalora are among the new faces in the camp of the Porcupine Warriors.

Ashanti Gold midfielder Latif Anabila, Evans Adomako of lower-tier club Phar Rangers and Andrews Kwadwo Appau from Tano Bofoakwa are Kotoko's other new stars.

The 23-time GPL champions have also been strongly linked to veteran Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan, also connected to Legon Cities, who has been without a club since leaving Indian Super League side NorthEast United earlier this year.

Former Arsenal midfielder has also been mentioned as a possible recruit amid reports the ex-Fulham man is considering coming out of retirement.

There has also been speculation about a potential acquisition of midfielder Justice Blay from Medeama following his impressive loan spell with the Porcupine Warriors last season.

Undoubtedly, Maxwell Konadu’s outfit’s priorities for the upcoming season remain winning the GPL title as well as making a big impression in the Caf Champions League.

Nobody wants Ronaldo: Elite clubs avoid Man United legend

The Senegal stopper's three clean sheets in four games suggests the Blues now have a dependable man between the sticks after Kepa’s struggles

To fully understand why Chelsea’s draw with Manchester United was so encouraging, especially for the former, it's important to understand the context to the goalless encounter.

Saturday’s stalemate was a damp squib, with both sides seemingly more interested in not getting beaten after mixed starts to the 2020/21 season. Manchester United had lost their opening two Premier League games at Old Trafford — 3-1 vs Crystal Palace and 6-1 against old boss Jose Mourinho, who manages Tottenham Hotspur these days — so another defeat was non-negotiable.

For Frank Lampard’s troops, the bore draw, in some way, signalled progress despite offering little going forward. In last season’s opener, a naive Blues side were thrashed 4-0 even though they’d matched the Red Devils for majority of the encounter.

On his second visit to the Theatre of Dreams, though, the Chelsea legend showed the required pragmatism to eke out a boring, yet auspicious point. Last season, United’s Expected Goals was 2.37. On Saturday the host’s xG was 0.66 as the Blues sat deeper this time around and held on to possession lesser than last term, therefore not exposing themselves to many fast breaks from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Despite the collective effort of the side in limiting Man United on the day, the efforts of two players in particular made the Blues’ draw a possibility: Thiago Silva and Edouard Mendy. The Brazil centre-back needs no introduction, having been a stalwart for Paris-Saint Germain for eight years following a three-year spell in Italy with AC Milan.

Mendy, however, was arguably more important than the South American on a turgid evening in Greater Manchester. In truth, the difference in approach, coupled with the organisational presence of Silva, saw Chelsea defend better in the North West at the weekend.

While the Blues effectively rendered Solskjaer’s team sterile, the home side sporadically threatened to score only to be thwarted by the Senegal shot-stopper and once by Silva, who was aware to Edinson Cavani’s movement to block his former PSG teammate’s goal-bound effort in the 87th minute.

In total, the former Rennes goalkeeper made four saves, but the pair of stops to deny Marcus Rashford stood out. The first, 10 minutes before half-time saw the stopper stick out his right leg to thwart the England international and the latter came at the death when the Red Devils made a late push for the three points.

That 90th-minute stop drew an enthusiastic applause from Cesar Azpilicueta. Rashford looked frustrated and Solskjaer, stood on the touchline, seemed astounded by the save. Chelsea supporters watching from home instantly took to social media to effusively praise the towering goalie.

Indeed, the West African has grown somewhat since his encouraging EFL Cup debut at Tottenham Hotspur, keeping three successive clean sheets since the late concession to Erik Lamela at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The eagerness to come out to claim almost every cross into the box has been replaced by a far measured approach against Crystal Palace, Sevilla and United.

Supporters’ happiness with the 28-year-old’s display at Old Trafford is underlined by the assuredness in the new signing to prevent decent shots from scoring, a confidence that was ebbed away under former incumbent Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Doubts surrounding the big-money arrival from Athletic Club in 2018 grew exponentially in Lampard’s maiden year, with the club legend dropping the Spaniard in several key fixtures in 2019/20. Willy Caballero replaced the 26-year-old in those games but the South American isn’t significantly better than Kepa, neither can he be trusted to deliver consistent performances in a run of games.

The defensive malaise in Chelsea’s league campaign was laid bare by the concession of 54 goals in 38 matches, the highest in the top half, 10 more than Watford and 11 higher than Bournemouth, both of whom were relegated.

Despite having the 11th best defence statistically, the Blues’ Expected Goals Against per Understat was 41.09, interestingly in the top five in England’s top flight, along with Manchester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Man United and Liverpool.

Chelsea’s negative disparity in goals conceded and xGA was the highest in the Prem, partly down to naive defending and, largely, below-par goalkeeping. Per Fbref, Kepa ranked third bottom for Post-Shot Expected Goals among goalkeepers in Europe's top five leagues, a metric that tries to measure a goalie's ability to prevent shots from scoring.

The concession of Wilfried Zaha’s long-range strike in last season’s run-in and Leandro Trossard’s effort from around the edge of the box typified Kepa’s average shot-stopping in recent months, while mistakes in the 2-0 defeat by Liverpool and 3-3 draw with Southampton this season meant the Spain international’s time as first-choice was up.

Mendy’s clean sheet vs United helped Lampard’s men keep only their second league shutout on the road since his appointment. The first came almost a year ago when the West Londoners defeated Spurs 2-0 in December 2019, a truly remarkable statistic emphasising the rarity of away shutouts.

Even though the London outfit were unproductive in attack vs Sevilla and on Saturday, both clean sheets showed the five-time Premier League champions can be less vulnerable in their defensive third.

Indeed, with Silva at the heart of the defence and, especially Mendy between the sticks, Lampard can be safe in the knowledge that his team are less likely to concede cheap goals to the opposition.

Finding the right balance to allow his attacking talent flourish, whilst not compromising on the recent defensive solidity, is the next step for the Blues legend, helped by the impact of the Brazilian and Senegalese keeper, who have unearthed a different side to this fledgling Chelsea team.

USMNT's Scally extends Gladbach deal to 2027

The Brazilian pulled up with an injury before half an hour had passed in Tuesday's Champions League clash with Midtjylland

Liverpool's defensive woes got even worse on Tuesday as Fabinho was forced out of Tuesday's Champions League clash with Midtjylland with an apparent leg injury.

The Brazilian has been starting at centre-back in place of Virgil van Dijk, who is set to miss several months after suffering an ACL injury.

Fabinho started Tuesday's clash with Midtjylland in defence alongside Joe Gomez, but was forced out after just under half an hour.

The former Monaco man pulled up while tracking back, going to ground shortly after as he was inspected by physios.

In the minutes following, youngster Rhys Williams was summoned off the bench, with Fabinho limping off as Liverpool's centre-back concerns worsened.

Fabinho has been ever-present for the Reds since making the move from Monaco in 2018, making 41 and 39 appearances in each of his first two seasons.

The 27-year-old midfielder had been filling in at centre-back recently, having started alongside Gomez against both Ajax and Sheffield United due to recent injury issues.

The Brazilian was needed in the role due to injuries to both Van Dijk and Joel Matip, although the latter is expected to be back in the near future.

Van Dijk, meanwhile, is not, as the Dutch star suffered an injury against Everton that could keep him out for the rest of the season, although there is hope that he does return before the end of the campaign.

The Netherlands star suffered the injury following a clash with Everton's Jordan Pickford, while Liverpool's summer signing Thiago also suffered an injury in that Merseyside derby.

Williams, meanwhile, came on for his fourth senior appearance, having spent last season on loan with Kidderminster.

The 19-year-old defender featured twice for the Reds in the Carabao Cup before coming on late in Liverpool's 1-0 win over Ajax to open the Champions League group stage.

Internationally, Williams has played for England up to the Under-21 level, while he was also a member of the Liverpool squad that won the FA Youth Cup in  2018–19.

Following Tuesday's clash with Midtjylland, Liverpool will then face West Ham this weekend before visiting Atalanta on Tuesday in their third Champions League match of the campaign.

'He should have taken it in the mush' - Solskjaer gives verdict on Pogba handball

The controversial official says one of his final acts as Barca supremo was to approve the club's inclusion in the new league

Barcelona have accepted an invitation to join a proposed new European Super League, according to outgoing president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

Bartomeu made the announcement on Tuesday, with the outgoing official confirming the club's want to participate in the competition - dubbed the European Premier League - in a speech confirming he and Barca's board of directors are resigning .

"I can announce some extraordinary news," Bartomeu said.

"We accept entry into a European Super League of football clubs. This acceptance will have to be ratified by the next assembly. We have also approved the format of the new Club World Cup.

"The European Super League will make it so the club can remain being one of the members."

Bartomeu's declaration of the Blaugrana's intention to participate in the proposed top-level European competition is not a guarantee however, with approval needed from the club's members before their entry is confirmed.

While the European Premier League is still not yet official, the rumoured event has been gaining traction in recent weeks after a Sky News report stated that a £4.6 billion ($6bn) package is being put together from Wall Street bank JP Morgan to see its creation.

The competition - which would replace the Champions League - is likely to begin in 2022 and feature either 16 or 18 teams, with clubs then playing a minimum of 30 matches over the course of a season.

At least five clubs from the Premier League could be named as European Premier League participants, with LiverpoolManchester United, Arsenal, ChelseaManchester City and Tottenham said to have been approached.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher reacted angrily to reports of his old club and Manchester United being involved in the new competition, while another former Reds star Stan Collymore also voiced his concern.

"If any English club joins a European Super League, then they should never be allowed back, ostracised completely and fam (sic) groups, real fan groups of those clubs stand up to condemn their club," Collymore told his followers on social media.

"F*ck them off and remind them where their bread was buttered for 100+ years."

Inter 0-0 Fiorentina: Lukaku fires blank to leave Juve on brink of the title

Manchester City dominated from start to finish as they cruised to a 3-0 victory away at Marseille in Group C.

Ferran Torres scored his second Champions League goal for Manchester City as Pep Guardiola's side eased to a 3-0 win over Marseille

Playing in a central role in the absence of Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus, Torres – who had netted in the 3-1 win over Porto in City's opening Group C outing – broke the deadlock when he was teed up by Kevin De Bruyne in the 18th minute.

City were well worthy of their lead, though Guardiola may be concerned that his team failed to turn their dominance of possession into clear-cut opportunities until Ilkay Gundogan settled the contest.

De Bruyne grabbed his second assist of the game – and moved onto 88 for his City career – with nine minutes remaining, teeing up Raheem Sterling to complete a routine win.

With De Bruyne and Aymeric Laporte back in the starting XI, City dominated from the off – first-half statistics of 68 per cent possession and 409 passes to Marseille's tally of 196 evidence of the visitors' control.

Yet City relied on a Marseille mistake to open the scoring, De Bruyne pouncing on Valentin Rongier's slack pass to set up Torres for a simple finish.

Laporte's last-ditch header denied Marseille the opportunity to equalise just after the hour, with Phil Foden then failing to find team-mate Sterling in space.

Gundogan should have done better in the 71st minute but his shot was a poor one. However, the points were City's five minutes later when the former Borussia Dortmund midfielder tucked in from Sterling's knockdown.

Sterling turned from provider to scorer as City added another late on, the England international side-footing into an empty net after latching on to De Bruyne's low cross.

What does it mean? City put domestic struggles behind them

City have made their poorest start to a Premier League season since 2014-15, but they have had little trouble in Europe so far this season. They have already scored six times, while Guardiola's side also ended an eight-match run in the Champions League without a clean sheet.

Two in two for Torres

Spain international Torres is still waiting for his first Premier League goal but the former Valencia youngster has hit the ground running in the Champions League. He became the second City player to score in his first two appearances for the club in the competition, the other being Mario Balotelli in 2011.

Marseille pay the price for negative tactics

Andre Villas-Boas, who elected to go with a 5-3-2 system, saw his team fail to lay a glove on City. Marseille have now lost their last five Champions League home matches; they saw just 36 per cent of the ball in this game and only managed two attempts, albeit both were on target.

What's next?

City face struggling Sheffield United in Saturday's early Premier League fixture, while Marseille are back in action in Ligue 1 on Friday, taking on Lens.

Borussia Monchengladbach 2-2 Real Madrid: Casemiro rescues LaLiga champions

Marcus Thuram scored twice for Borussia Monchengladbach but Real Madrid snatched a point from the jaws of defeat.

Casemiro scored in second-half injury time to rescue Real Madrid a 2-2 draw from a Champions League clash with Borussia Monchengladbach that threatened a serious setback for Zinedine Zidane's men.

Madrid arrived at Borussia Park buoyed by a 3-1 Clasico victory over Barcelona but were soon haunted by the sort of calamitous defending that saw them lose their Champions League Group B opener against Shakhtar Donetsk.

An error from Toni Kroos allowed the hosts an attack in which Marcus Thuram profited from some sloppy marking to score the opener, and the Frenchman netted a tap-in shortly before the hour mark to leave Madrid reeling.

The Spanish champions looked set to lose four consecutive European matches for the first time in their history before Karim Benzema scored with an acrobatic finish in the 87th minute and Casemiro swept home at the death.

The result may ease the pressure on Zidane for now, but his side must improve if their European hopes are to have any substance this season.

Kroos ended a sleepy opening 28 minutes with a fierce, curling 25-yard shot that stung the palms of Gladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer, who pushed it around the post.

But five minutes later the hosts stormed ahead when Alassane Plea spotted the unmarked Thuram advancing into the penalty area and found him with a pass that he met with a stunning first-time finish into the top corner of the net, leaving Thibaut Courtois no chance.

Casemiro headed a Kroos corner wide early in the second half as Madrid rallied, and Vinicius Junior ballooned over the crossbar from 12 yards when Federico Valverde played him in.

But Madrid remained permeable at the back and there was chaos in the ranks as Plea received the ball unmarked in the box and when his shot was only parried by Courtois, Thuram tucked the rebound home from close range.

Courtois then denied Plea one-on-one as Madrid threatened to lose all control, and it was only when Luka Modric and Eden Hazard came on that they regained some composure.

Hazard hit the side-netting 16 minutes from time and, though the hosts continued to attack, Benzema found the net with an overhead kick from a Casemiro header to set up a tense finish.

Three minutes into added time, Luca Modric's looping cross was headed down by Sergio Ramos, and Casemiro netted the equaliser from six yards out.

What does it mean? Zidane struggling for breath

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez will be disturbed by the start Los Blancos have made to this season's Champions League, and he will expect maximum points from forthcoming home games against Huesca and Inter.

Anything less and Zidane will find himself under considerable pressure at a club where European success is expected as standard.

Thuram too good

Madrid's sloppiness would not have mattered if Gladbach did not have the poise to take advantage, but Thuram scored with both of the shots he attempted and made a key pass as his side almost pulled off a memorable win.

Kroos lacks control

It was an error from Kroos that led to the hosts taking the lead and gaining a head of steam, and although he recovered to make two key passes in the game, his poor start set the tone for Madrid.

Key Opta Facts

- Real Madrid avoided defeat in an away Champions League game having gone two goals behind for the first time since December 2006 against Dynamo Kiev.
- Madrid have failed to win four consecutive matches across all European competitions for the first time since September 2006 (a run of five).
- They have conceded five goals in the Champions League this season, the joint most they have conceded at this stage of the competition (also in 2004-05 and 2019-20), whilst they have failed to win their opening two group games in consecutive campaigns.
- Marcus Thuram became just the third Frenchman to net a brace in their first home Champions League appearance, after Thierry Henry (1997, Monaco) and Moussa Dembele (2016, Celtic).

We looked like a proper football team for the first time - Hunt lauds Kaizer Chiefs ahead of Soweto Derby

The four-time PSL title-winning coach explained how Amakhosi should be the best team without the ball

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Gavin Hunt is pleased with his side's performance against Chippa United ahead of this weekend's Soweto Derby.

Amakhosi overcame Chippa United 1-0 to record their maiden win of the new 2020/21 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season on Tuesday night.

Gregory Damons' late own-goal sealed the win for Chiefs, who returned to winning ways after succumbing to an embarrassing 3-0 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns over the weekend.

Hunt praised Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Njabulo Blom, Siyabonga Ngezana and Philani Zulu as he felt Amakhosi looked like a proper team for the first time.

"Tonight, for the first time I think we looked like a proper football team. I thought Njabulo Blom in midfield was outstanding. And that's the difference," Hunt told SuperSport TV.

"We got a few legs in there. Ngcobo for me I think he's a great little player.

"But the whole team for me, I think defensively looked good. Siya came in, did better, Zulu I worked with him one-two days at left-back, we had to what we had to do. He was fantastic."

The 56-year-old tactician explained why he was seen urging his charges to keep the ball off the ground during the match.

"There was a lot of space down the sides. Their full-backs were really aggressive on our players. Obviously, there were big spaces down the sides," he added.

"So once we get the centre-backs turned, it gives us a chance. The pitch was very greasy so you had to be careful.

"We looked like a proper team tonight but let's see if we can do it next week and the week after."

Chippa goalkeeper Veli Mothwa produced a Man of the Match performance in a game which was dominated by Chiefs.

"We created so many opportunities tonight. Let's be honest, we hit the post a few times," the former Bidvest Wits coach explained.

"That second half, there must have been a patch of five minutes where the keeper made four or five saves. You think it's going to be one of those games where they get half a chance.

"But to be fair we looked really solid and much better out of possession. And I've always said to be a good team, you've got to be the best team without the ball."

Chiefs are set to take on their archrivals Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 semi-final first-leg match at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

Atletico Madrid 3-2 Salzburg: Joao Felix leaves it late for Simeone's side

Joao Felix was the star for Atletico Madrid as they bounced back in style from last week's thumping by Bayern Munich.

Atletico Madrid got their Champions League Group A campaign back on track as two goals from Joao Felix helped them to a 3-2 win over Salzburg on Tuesday.

Diego Simeone's side suffered a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of the defending champions Bayern Munich last week, but they started well against their Austrian opponents and went ahead through Marcos Llorente shortly before the half-hour mark.

Salzburg - who drew with Lokomotiv Moscow in their opening game - stormed into a 2-1 lead, though, thanks to goals either side of half-time from Dominik Szoboszlai and Mergim Berisha.

But Joao Felix had other ideas, quickly drawing Atletico level and then securing all three points five minutes from time with an improvised finish.

Earlier, Joao Felix was denied a stunning opener when his spectacular bicycle kick from eight yards crashed back off Cican Stankovic's crossbar before Luis Suarez volleyed narrowly wide from a corner.

Atleti's early dominance was rewarded in the 29th minute, though, thanks to Llorente's powerful shot from 20 yards squirming through the grasp of Stankovic.

Llorente squandered a golden opportunity to double his tally four minutes later, clipping wide of the right-hand post after being played clean through by Suarez.

That wastefulness was duly punished five minutes before the interval when Szoboszlai superbly steered past Jan Oblak from 15 yards with the outside of his right foot.

Salzburg edged ahead 63 seconds after the restart when Berisha turned home at the back post from Andreas Ulmer's low cross.

Their lead lasted just five minutes, however, as Joao Felix slotted in from close range after superb skill inside the penalty area from Angel Correa at the end of an incisive move.

The Portuguese then twice blazed over from excellent positions, but his perseverance paid off late on when Thomas Lemar's shot struck his foot and sat up kindly for him to slam home the winner.

What does it mean? Atleti stars justify Simeone's faith

Simeone said he trusted his team to bounce back from that "painful, heavy" defeat in Munich and they did not let him down.

They did it in uncharacteristic fashion, too, eschewing their usual obdurate style to play some inventive, attacking football that resulted in 19 shots on goal.

Joao Felix too hot to handle for Salzburg

Starting alongside Suarez in attack, Joao Felix was in scintillating form. The 20-year-old's two goals came from seven shots - four more than any other Atleti player - while he competed in a joint team-high of 20 duels, winning 65 per cent of them.

Trippier endures a night to forget

The England international was badly caught out of position for Salzburg's second goal, while he lost possession 21 times - more than any other Atleti player. He did make three key passes, but Trippier is unlikely to look back on this game with fond memories.

Key Opta facts

- Joao Félix (20y 352d) is the second-youngest player to score a brace for Atletico in the Champions League, after Sergio Aguero against PSV back in September 2008 (20y 106d).
- Llorente is Atletico's joint top scorer across all competitions in 2020 (eight goals), with three of them coming in the Champions League.
- Szoboszlai (20y 2d) is the second-youngest player to score in consecutive Champions League appearances for RB Salzburg, following Erling Haaland who netted in five in a row as a 19-year-old last season.
- Since the start of the 2018-19 season, Atletico have won all nine of the Champions League games in which they have opened the scoring – eight of which have been in home games.
- Salzburg's last eight Champions League games have seen a total of 38 goals scored (20 for, 18 against) – since the start of last season, their games have seen a higher average number of goals than any other team (4.8 – min. two games played).

What's next?

Atleti will be looking to make it three LaLiga wins in a row when they travel to Osasuna on Saturday, while Salzburg host Swarovski Tirol in the Austrian Bundesliga on the same day.

Steve Davis to remain Wolves manager until 2023

Liverpool had to work hard to see off Midtjylland, Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah getting the goals in a 2-0 triumph at Anfield.

Diogo Jota scored the 10,000th goal in Liverpool's history as they laboured to a 2-0 win over Midtjylland, maintaining their 100 per cent start in Champions League Group D.

After a woeful first-half display from Jurgen Klopp's side, Portugal forward Jota finished off a fine team move 10 minutes into the second period as he struck home from close range.

Midtjylland's best chance fell to Brazilian Evander, who saw his shot on the turn flashed wide, while Liverpool missed further opportunities to increase their margin of victory.

However, a second eventually arrived for the hosts in added time, Mohamed Salah scoring from the penalty spot after he had been fouled by Paulinho.

Liverpool's victory helped them move top of the table after Atalanta and Ajax played out an entertaining 2-2 draw.

The Barca chief made an major announcement during a press conference confirming his resignation on Tuesday

La Liga president Javier Tebas has launched a broadside at Josep Maria Bartomeu, saying the outgoing Barcelona president "confirmed his ignorance" with his announcement over a proposed European Super League.

Bartomeu announced his resignation on Tuesday along with the entire Barcelona board after several months of intense pressure following a disastrous 2019-20 campaign.

On his way out though, Bartomeu also confirmed that Barcelona had approved the club's participation in the proposed European Super League.

"Today I can announce great news which will change our financial perspectives," Bartomeu said at a press conference.

"We accept entry into a European Super League of football clubs. This acceptance will have to be ratified by the next assembly. We have also approved the format of the new Club World Cup.

"The European Super League will make it so the club can remain being one of the members."

The European Super League has generated plenty of controversy since Sky News reported last week that a £4.6 billion ($6bn) package was being assembled by Wall Street bank JP Morgan to fund the creation of a new competition which will see the biggest teams from EnglandFranceGermanyItaly and Spain form a new league.

Many have viewed the proposal as a way for rich clubs to get richer, damaging clubs that aren't invited while also undermining the Champions League in the process.

Tebas has joined the chorus of criticism, aiming his ire toward Bartomeu in a post on Twitter.

"Unfortunate Bartomeu statement on his last day about FC Barcelona joining a weak and imaginary competition which would be their ruin," Tebas wrote.

"It confirms his ignorance about the football industry. Sad end for a president with successes and lately many mistakes."

Tuesday wasn't the first time Tebas has hit out at the proposal, as the Liga chief said last week that the idea is a product of "ignorance."

"The authors of this idea, if they really exist because there is nobody actually defending it, not only show total ignorance of the organisation and customs of European and world football, but also a serious ignorance of the audiovisual rights markets," Tebas told ESPN.
