Nigeria miss out on 2021 U20 Africa Cup of Nations place

With Ghana losing to Cote d’Ivoire on Saturday evening, the Flying Eagles’ ambition of a ticket to Mauritania 2021 have faded into thin air

Nigeria have failed in their bid to qualify for the 2021 U20 Africa Cup of Nations following Ghana’s inability to defeat Cote d’Ivoire in Saturday’s Wafu U20 Zone B fixture.

The Flying Eagles began their campaign on an uninspiring note following their 1-1 draw versus the Young Elephants at the Charles De Gaulle Stadium.

Despite needing a win against the Black Satellites in their last preliminary game – the seven-time African kings bowed 1-0 to the 2009 world youth champions thanks to Precious Boah’s stunning free-kick that was unstoppable for goalkeeper Kolawole Oladipo.

With that result, their only hope of progressing was seeing coach Abdul Karim Zito’s boys defeat the Ivorians by at least a two-goal margin.

Nevertheless, that was not the case as Ghana lost 1-0 to Cote d’Ivoire owing to a second-half strike.

Fofana Datro who was a torn in the flesh of the Ghanaian backline won a free-kick very close to the 18-yeard box on the hour mark, and Issouf Dosso curved the ensuing kick past goalkeeper Ibrahim Danlad.

That result saw Nigeria bow out of the competition having finished third in Group B with just one point from two games, while the Black Satellites finished as runners-up with three points from the same number of games.

With four points, the Ivorians won the group and will now face Burkina Faso in the last four. Elsewhere, Zito’s team will try Niger Republic for size for a place in the final.

The 2021 U20 Afcon serves as qualifiers for next year’s Fifa U20 World Cup to be staged in Indonesia.

Nigeria finished fourth at the 2019 Afcon U20 staged in Niger Republic. At the global fiesta held in Poland, the team led by Paul Aigbogun crashed out after the Round of 16 following their 2-1 defeat to Senegal.

The Flying Eagles are the most successful country in Africa at this level of competition having won the championship for a record seven times. Their last triumph was achieved at the 2015 edition when they defeated hosts Senegal 1-0 in the final.

Real Madrid 2-0 Atletico Madrid: Champions close gap with another precious win

For the third game running, Real Madrid landed a big victory as LaLiga leaders Atletico Madrid went down in the derby.

Real Madrid beat LaLiga pacesetters Atletico Madrid 2-0 in the derby on Saturday to close to within three points of the leaders and cap a brilliant week.

Pressure was building on Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane before his side won at Sevilla last weekend and then progressed in the Champions League by seeing off Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Spanish champions therefore headed into the clash with Atleti in high spirits and quickly established another lead through Casemiro's header.

Atleti had won their prior seven LaLiga matches and were unbeaten this term, but their record against Madrid is rather less impressive and Jan Oblak's unfortunate second-half own goal ensured a ninth consecutive league meeting with their neighbours without victory.

Madrid had the visitors on the back foot from the outset and only a vital fingertip touch from Oblak denied Karim Benzema as he cracked a 20-yard drive against the upright.

The opener arrived soon enough as Casemiro rose to head Toni Kroos' corner inside the near post, unimpeded following marker Hector Herrera's slip, although the game slowed thereafter.

Atleti had to wait until the 55th minute for their first effort of note but should have drawn level as Thomas Lemar ghosted in at the far post after Raphael Varane failed to cut out a low cross, only to stab a tame effort into the side-netting.

They were made to pay eight minutes later when Dani Carvajal rifled in a low shot from outside the area and the ball bounced off the post, against a prone Oblak and into the net.

A recovery from Diego Simeone's men always appeared unlikely and Thibaut Courtois saved well from Saul Niguez's close-range header to allow Madrid to coast home, almost netting a third as Oblak turned Lucas Vazquez's blast over the top.

What does it mean? Blancos back on track

Madrid had lost two of their previous three home league games coming into this contest, but the tide already appeared to have turned earlier in the week.

A vital victory at Sevilla was followed by the most accomplished display of the season so far as they leapfrogged Gladbach, setting the stage for a third win and a third clean sheet.

Atleti did not even have a shot before half-time - the first such instance in this fixture since Opta records began in 2003-04.

Madrid inspired by spine

Since Cristiano Ronaldo departed for Juventus, Madrid have relied heavily on the key men through the centre of their side: Courtois, Sergio Ramos, Casemiro and Benzema.

Six times this season that quartet have started together in LaLiga, six times they have won. Only one of the other half-dozen matches have ended in victory.

While Casemiro grabbed a goal, this was a particularly special outing for Benzema, who surpassed Roberto Carlos for the most Madrid appearances by a foreign player (528).

Atleti lament Lemar miss

Lemar last week netted his first club goal since April 2019, but Saturday brought a return to his frustrating prior form in LaLiga.

The France international came off the bench at half-time yet failed to create a single chance and passed up Atleti's clearest opportunity with one of his two shots.

What's next?

Madrid are quickly back in action at home to Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday, while Atletico have Copa del Rey duty against Cardassar the following day.

Everton 1-0 Chelsea: Sigurdsson penalty punishes Mendy error

Gylfi Sigurdsson converted from the spot to punish a rash Edouard Mendy challenge as Everton toppled Chelsea on Merseyside.

Chelsea missed the chance to move top of the Premier League table as Gylfi Sigurdsson's penalty secured Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti a 1-0 win over his former club.

Ancelotti endured a miserable return to Stamford Bridge last season with his current employers, Everton going down 4-0 in the capital.

However, he came out on top in a second meeting with Frank Lampard, who was part of the Chelsea squad who secured a domestic double under the Italian coach in the 2009-10 season.

The only goal of the game arrived in the 22nd minute thanks to an early Christmas gift from Edouard Mendy, the goalkeeper needlessly charging into Dominic Calvert-Lewin as the striker attempted to get on the end of his own flick-on from Jordan Pickford's long punt.

Sigurdsson calmly rolled in his attempt from the spot for his first league goal in 17 games, much to the delight of the 2,000-strong crowd inside Goodison Park.

Chelsea responded brightly to the setback of falling behind, Reece James striking a post with a low drive that Pickford appeared to get a slight touch to, while Kurt Zouma – who spent a season on loan at Everton earlier in his career – planted a close-range attempt straight at the England goalkeeper.

Richarlison failed to capitalise on a clear shooting opportunity before the break for the hosts, slipping as he struck the ball with his left foot to make Mendy's life easier.

Sigurdsson went close with a free-kick early in the second half and was then denied the chance to take another penalty when a VAR check found Calvert-Lewin offside prior to being bundled over by Ben Chilwell.

Still, one goal proved enough as Chelsea failed to find an equaliser, despite Lampard sending on Tammy Abraham in place of the ineffective Kai Havertz to partner Olivier Giroud up top.

Mason Mount saw a free-kick kept out by a post as Everton held firm, in the process securing a third successive home win over their opponents as they moved into the top half.

What does it mean? Sweet success for depleted Toffees

Everton had stuttered after an excellent start to the 2020-21 season, winning just once in their previous seven league outings after opening up with four wins on the spin.

Their cause was not helped by a shortage of full-backs - Mason Holgate and Ben Godfrey did an admirable job either side of the excellent Michael Keane and Yerry Mina - in what was a battling display, as shown by them having just 28 per cent possession. Indeed, Chelsea failed to manage an on-target attempt in the entire second half.

Sigurdsson pulls the strings

The Iceland international has managed more Premier League goals against Chelsea than any other side in the competition, also scoring twice against them while playing for Tottenham and Swansea.

Everton's captain created six chances for his team-mates before making way in the closing minutes, while no one else on the pitch created more than two.

In it for keeps?

Mendy had seemingly solved the keeper conundrum at Chelsea, conceding just twice in seven league games prior to the trip to Merseyside. However, Lampard will have every reason to question why the signing from Rennes felt the need to rush out and confront Calvert-Lewin when the situation was under control.

What's next?

Chelsea are back on the road again during a full round of midweek Premier League fixtures, travelling to Wolves on Tuesday. Everton have an extra day to recover before they visit Leicester City.

'It is ridiculous stuff' - Lampard says Chelsea are not title favourites following Klopp comments

The Blues manager feels his side will learn a lot from the defeat to a team who outbattled them

Frank Lampard has admitted his side weren't good enough during their 1-0 defeat to Everton, and feels it was a reality check for those who have said Chelsea have the best squad in the division and are Premier League title favourites.

The Blues fell behind to a Gylfi Sigurdsson penalty at Goodison Park on Saturday and were unable to fashion a response.

Lampard says his side did not stand up to the physical challenge posed by Everton, and feels lessons will be learned from the performance.

The defeat is their first in any competition since the loss to Liverpool on September 20, and Lampard says it is an indicator that his side should not be classed as title favourites – as Reds manager Jurgen Klopp said recently.

“It is a long season,” Lampard told BT Sport. “If it makes people who are talking about us, saying we are going to win the league, we have got the best squad in the league. It is ridiculous stuff.

"When you talk about best squads, you have to look at the teams who have won it in the last two, three, four years. Their squads are full of strikers and wingers who score 30 or 40 goals a season and midfield players who have won multiple league titles all over the place.

“We have some, but we have young players and as a squad we are not there.

“In two or three years if I am still here and have a couple of leagues in our pocket and you ask me if we are title contenders I will say yes, but at the moment people want to look at our squad and talk about it.

“It is very quick that it has gone from after West Brom and Southampton and we were nowhere near good enough, rubbish, useless. Now last week we have the best squad in the league and are going to win it.

“We are probably somewhere in the middle and that’s the reality of it.”

Commenting on his side's display, Lampard said: “We were not at our best. The first 20 minutes were key. I knew it was coming, longer balls, second balls, a team desperate for a win and with capabilities to make it really difficult.

“When you go 1-0 down it absolutely is their game plan which is to make it difficult. They did it well and we did not have enough. For our levels, for what we have been recently, it’s not good enough.

“The lads are gutted in there as we have been on a good run. It was a big test and we did not pass the test, but we will in the future.”

Everton’s winning goal from the spot came after goalkeeper Edouard Mendy raced off his line and fouled Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

It was not a great decision from Mendy, but Lampard said he had been outstanding since his arrival from Rennes.

“I don’t think he was just culpable,” Lampard said. “He has been outstanding since he’s been here, so I'll take that one.”

'When you don’t know what’s going on inside don’t talk!' - Man Utd star Pogba hits back at critics

The France international's agent stirred up controversy this week when he declared his client's time at the club to be "over"

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has hit back at his critics after a week in which his agent Mino Raiola made it clear he wants to leave Old Trafford.

Raiola generated plenty of controversy when he claimed his client’s time with the club was "over" this week and talked up a transfer before his contract expires in the summer of 2022.

Pogba came off the bench and scored against RB Leipzig in midweek, but couldn't prevent United from crashing out of the Champions League. After the game, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer responded to Raiola's comments.

“As soon as Paul’s agent realises this is a team sport and we work together the better," the Norwegian said.

Pogba would then start in Saturday's derby against Man City, which ended in a drab 0-0 draw.

After that game, Pogba broke his silence on his future with a post on Instagram in which he assured Man Utd supporters that he is "1000%" committed to the cause at Old Trafford.

"I’ve always fought and will always fight for Manchester United, my team-mates and the fans," Pogba said. "Bla bla is not important. The future is far, today is what matters and I am 1000% involved!

"Always strong together.. all has been clear between the club and myself and that will never change. When you don’t know what’s going on inside don’t talk."

Pogba's future has been the subject of plenty of discussion over the past week, with his former club Juventus considered one of the favourites to land him should he depart United.

Juventus director Fabio Paratici spoke highly of Pogba this week, saying "we love him very much" in a comment that will do little to quiet the transfer talk.

Former United forward Louis Saha also weighed in on the situation, finding major fault with Raiola making his proclamation one day before United's crucial Champions League match against Leipzig.

"I’m baffled with the situation with Paul Pogba," Saha told Genting Bet. "I really love Pogba, he’s someone I consider highly, but this communication is a joke.

"I was shocked and I can't believe something like this happened because this game was so important for United.

"I’m not speaking as a fan, I’m speaking about Manchester United in general, you think that it’s a big game, going into the last 16. You need that focus, but the focus was on one player.

"This is unbelievable, the headlines were about Pogba because of the agent – it wasn’t even Pogba who said anything."

Zidane marvels at 'f*cking great' Real Madrid midfield after derby delight

Luka Modric and Toni Kroos earned high praise from their coach after winning their battles against Atletico Madrid

Zinedine Zidane believes his Real Madrid midfield stars have rediscovered their best form after an influential display in their 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid.

Casemiro, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos started together in La Liga for just the third time this season on Saturday and Zidane's team selection proved effective against their city rivals.

Madrid took the lead through Casemiro's header and then extended their advantage courtesy of a Jan Oblak own goal in the second half.

Zidane was particularly taken by the displays of Modric and Kroos, with the World Cup winner completing 87 of 90 passes, the most in a league Madrid derby since at least 2005-06.

"We used [Modric and Kroos] to find the way out, it's true," said Zidane, who is unbeaten in seven games against Atleti. "We had to do it.

"And then playing fast from one side to the other and with diagonals, we found gaps. They're f*cking great, they're exceptional.

"Karim [Benzema], too, and Lucas [Vazquez], he is phenomenal, and [Dani] Carvajal, and our captain [Sergio Ramos], [Raphael] Varane. They are all very good."

The coach was further asked about the trio in the centre of the pitch, who now have competition in the form of Federico Valverde and Martin Odegaard.

"They are at the level of the three Champions Leagues we won in a row," he said. "They are playing at a very high level."

Victory against Atleti brought to an end an extremely successful week, with Madrid having also won 1-0 at Sevilla and 2-0 against Borussia Monchengladbach to reach the last 16 of the Champions League.

"We confirmed what we did in the two previous games," said the coach, whose side restricted Atleti to one shot on target across the 90 minutes and no efforts at all before half-time.

"We competed very well throughout the game.

"But we don't have anything to celebrate because we haven't won anything. It's a good week.

"I'm happy for the players because they always believe in what they do. And when they get things done I'm happy. Let's enjoy and think about Tuesday [against Athletic Bilbao]."

Morsy grabs assist as Akpom’s Middlesbrough defeat Millwall

The Egypt international was involved in Boro’s second goal in Saturday’s triumph over Gary Rowett’s Lions

Sam Morsy provided an assist as Middlesbrough defeated Millwall 3-0 in Saturday’s English Championship showdown.

The Boro cruised to their seventh triumph of the season thanks to a brace from Duncan Watmore plus Marcus Tavernier’s strike – scored in the first half.

Manager Neil Warnock made three changes to the side that bowed 3-0 to Preston North End on Wednesday, with Tavernier replacing injured Jonny Howson and Anfernee Dijksteel returning to the starting XI, while Chuba Akpom took Britt Assombalonga’s place.

13 minutes into the clash, Watmore put the hosts ahead. A clever pass from George Saville released Marvin Johnson on the left before cutting across to leave the English midfielder with a simple finish.

Inspired by the strike, they doubled their lead two minutes later. Profiting from a pass from Egypt international Morsy, Tavernier found his way in the Lions’ danger area before unleashing an unstoppable left-footed rocket beyond goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski into the bottom corner.

In a goal-laden first-half, Watmore completed his double in the 20th minute. Former Millwall man Saville scuffed a shot unexpectedly into the brace hero’s path before sending in a cool finish.

Boro maintained their dominance and could have made it four from captain Patrick McNair, nevertheless, his brilliant strike was tipped over the crossbar by Bialkowski.

Early in the second-half, Akpom saw his lofted finish saved by Bialkoswki’s fingertips. He was then unlucky not to win a penalty having been sent crashing to the ground.

Despite Millwall throwing in the duo of Jon Dadi Badvarsson and Matt Smith for Alex Pearce and Mason Bennett respectively, they could not launch a comeback as they fell apart at the Riverside Stadium.

Morsy who was featuring in his 12th game of the 2020-21 campaign was in action from start to finish while Nigeria-prospect Akpom made way for DR Congo forward Assombalonga with 18 minutes left to play.

With this result, Boro moved to ninth in the English second-tier log having garnered 27 points from 18 games. For Millwall, they occupy 17th spot with 21 points from the same number of outings.

Morsy would be hoping to sustain his tempo when his team hosts Luton Town in four days time, while the Lions who remain winless in their last nine league fixtures visit Bristol City on Tuesday.

Koeman reveals what Barcelona must do to turn season around

The Dutch coach dismissed rumours that his dressing room has started to sour on his ideas

Ronald Koeman believes he still has the backing of the Barcelona squad, whom he has called on to work hard and improve their concentration levels in order to save their season.

It has been a bad week for the Catalans, as they slipped further off the pace in La Liga with defeat at Cadiz and were overhauled in the battle for top spot in Champions League Group G thanks to a 3-0 loss at home to Juventus.

Koeman’s men welcome Levante to Camp Nou on Sunday, and the Dutchman wants to see a response from his players.

“We have to improve concentration and defend with more intensity,” Koeman, who has also admitted to being worried about the upcoming presidential elections said, according to Sport. “I’m not talking about the system. We conceded 11 goals and they are penalties, mistakes, individual errors.

“We are the team that has created the most opportunities in the league and that’s thanks to the system. We have players like [Lionel] Messi, Pedri and [Antoine] Griezmann. They need space and freedom. And we look for the best for these players with this system.

“We are in a difficult moment at the club, not only on a sporting level. There are many more things. We look for the best in every way. I see the squad is keen and wants to improve. They know where we have to go. You cannot change in two days, you have to work to improve.”

There have been rumours that the dressing room is beginning to question the former Barcelona player's methods, but Koeman does not feel that is the case.

“I think the players believe in me. If not, I couldn’t work,” the former Everton and Netherlands boss said. “We are trying to improve things. There is enough time to react, but after these last few results you have to face up to it.”

Barca began the weekend 12 points adrift of leaders Atletico Madrid, and Koeman was blunt about what is required in the coming week.

"It is an important week with three games at home and we have to win all three,” he said of matches against Levante, Real Sociedad and Valencia.

Koeman was asked whether his players are struggling mentally, but he does not feel that is an issue and dismissed talk of bringing in outside help.

"I don't believe in psychologists and mental things,” Koeman said. “If you are at Barca you have to overcome the pressure."

Orlando Pirates issue Lorch and Lepasa fitness update ahead of Chippa United clash

Borussia Dortmund have now lost three in a row at home in the Bundesliga after they were thrashed by Stuttgart on Saturday.

Lucien Favre held nothing back when assessing Borussia Dortmund's performance after a humiliating 5-1 home loss to Stuttgart.

The stunning result means Dortmund have now suffered three straight defeats at home in the Bundesliga for the first time since the 2013-14 season, when Jurgen Klopp was in charge.

Favre's future will come under scrutiny following this latest setback, despite steering BVB through to the last-16 stage of the Champions League.

The Swiss coach admitted his side - without the injured Erling Haaland - were masters of their own downfall, branding the display "very, very bad" while also praising their opponents.

"That was a disaster. It was bad," Favre, whose tactics were questioned by Mats Hummels, told the media after the game.

"We weren't good at winning the ball. We made too many big mistakes. That's hard to explain. If you are not good at winning the ball, I mean the whole team, then you have a problem.

"Stuttgart played well, but we were very, very bad. That will not do. Stuttgart played well in the first half, but we made it 1-1.

"Still, we wanted to do better in the second half. We gave up a very stupid goal. That worried the team. We weren't there today."

Dortmund had only lost one of the previous 16 league meetings between the teams, while they were on a 13-game unbeaten run at home against promoted sides.

However, Stuttgart had not lost on the road since returning to the top tier, a run that now stands at six matches after they demolished their opponents at Signal Iduna Park.

Silas Wamangituka scored twice, his brace sandwiching an equaliser from Giovanni Reyna, before Stuttgart pulled clear with two goals in three minutes, Philipp Forster and Tanguy Coulibaly on target. Substitute Nicolas Gonzalez then added a fifth in added time.

Captain Marco Reus accepted the result is unacceptable for Dortmund, who have now won only six of their 11 league games this term, leaving them outside the top four in the table.

"Stuttgart showed us how we actually wanted to play," Reus said. "They were aggressive. They were very compact, switched over when they lost the ball and played great together at the front.

"It's not a coincidence. We just missed everything we really need on the pitch. It's a very, very difficult evening.

"We have to digest it first. We are not allowed to present ourselves like that. We have to talk about it and report the errors."

Dortmund have little time to reflect, though, as they are back in action on Tuesday, when they travel to Werder Bremen in Bundesliga action.

The Super Eagles forward will not be able to return to action until after the winter break

Bordeaux manager Jean-Louis Gasset has confirmed Samuel Kalu will miss their last four games in 2020 due to an injury.

The Super Eagles attacker was training to return to action last week when he suffered another setback on the quadriceps of his right thigh.

He has been battling with muscle strain since he limped off in Nigeria’s 1-0 loss to Algeria in October.

A few weeks after the international break, Kalu made a return to the Girondins’ first-team in their 1-0 victory over Rennes but was forced off when he suffered a relapse just before the hour-mark.

Ahead of Sunday’s Ligue 1 trip to Lille, Gasset disclosed the 23-year-old Nigerian and Laurent Koscielny who is battling the same injury, will not be available for selection until after the winter break.

The break in the French top-flight starts from December 23 until January 5.

"They had an MRI. I was very optimistic but unfortunately, I must have been disillusioned,” Gasset was quoted by Girondins 33.

“The examination revealed a lesion for both. They are minimal lesions but which require a fortnight's rest. They will not play again. By the winter break, we will see them again in 2021.”

Despite his struggle with injuries in this campaign, the Aba-born attacker has scored two goals in seven Ligue 1 appearances.

Kalu is currently in his third season in France after joining the Girondins on a five-year deal from Belgian club Gent in 2018.

In Kalu's absence, Nigeria's Josh Maja will be expected to boost Bordeaux's frontline as they sit 10th in the league table with 19 points from 13 outings.

Erik ten Hag urges Man Utd not to 'burn money' despite 'need' for new striker

The right-back’s performances of late have been extolled, but facing Crystal Palace’s dynamic duo may well be the litmus test for Spurs defender

If anyone had offered Jose Mourinho seven points from nine before Tottenham Hotspur played Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal last week, the Portuguese manager will surely have taken it.

Their overall performance before the aforementioned fixtures in gameweek eight’s encounter at West Bromwich Albion didn’t win many admirers, largely due to its humdrum nature. Away at the Hawthorns, the Lilywhites were laboured in possession and struggled to penetrate an Albion side that defended extremely deep.

Eventually, Harry Kane took advantage of Sam Johnstone’s error of judgement in the 88th minute to seal a victory for Mourinho’s men.

Going into the final international break of 2020, observers noted that Mourinho’s team would come unstuck with City, the Blues and the North London Derby to come going into a busy festive schedule. Three fixtures down the line, however, and those predictions have been swatted. Rather than falter, the Portuguese has instead enhanced his side’s tag as Premier League title contenders.

Key to that run of three solid results has been Serge Aurier, whose run in the side could be ascribed to Matt Doherty’s positive coronavirus test whilst on international duty. Doherty had been Mourinho’s preferred choice in league games (the Irishman assisted Kane’s goal vs West Bromwich) but the Ivory Coast captain had to be utilised vs Guardiola’s side. It’s safe to say that he’s been magnificent since.

The right-back’s impressive showings against the Cityzens and Frank Lampard’s men were reviewed before last week’s meeting with Arsenal; a game Spurs won 2-0.

Aurier made a stunning 17 recoveries — eight higher than next-best Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg — had a combined six tackles and interceptions which was a game-high and started the sweeping counter through which Spurs doubled their advantage vs Mikel Arteta’s troubled side.

There’s an odd tendency to diminish Spurs’ approach in those games; and while the majority of observers weren’t pleased with their modus operandi, they often mistake easy-on-the-eye football for playing well: i.e, following the manager's instruction to perfection to achieve the desired result.

As such, there’ll be a keen eye on their tactics away at Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon.

Given the Lilywhites travel to Anfield to face Liverpool three days after playing the Eagles — a game Mourinho is likely to approach with caution — there may be the temptation to give Aurier a day off at Selhurst Park.

However, based on the evidence of how the two-time Champions League winner has rotated his right-backs this season, the West African will probably go up against compatriot, Wilfried Zaha, and Anglo-Nigerian, Eberechi Eze.

The pair were in devastating form last week at The Albion, with the 28-year-old hitting a brace and the youngster breathtaking as Roy Hodgson’s men hit the Albion for five to claim a 5-1 success. In truth, it’ll be remiss to mention the eventual result without highlighting how Matheus Pereira’s 34th-minute red card totally changed the game at the Hawthorns.

Slaven Bilic’s team were, in fact, the dominant side before the mercurial Brazilian was dismissed, and the score at full-time may have been different under different circumstances.

Still, it was pleasing to see Hodgson let his side express themselves against 10 men, even though there’s a general frustration with the experienced manager’s tendency to incessantly pull up the handbrakes.

This somewhat exasperating nature, particularly with the presence of someone with Eze’s talent and Zaha’s talismanic presence, was questioned by Goal after the Eagles’ beat Leeds United 4-1 in early November; a game that demonstrated the attacking potential of the Glaziers.

The former Queens Park Rangers youngster was arguably Palace’s best player in that thrashing of the Baggies, despite registering only one assist, but he mostly looked better than his more experienced teammate on the day.

Palace’s left flank — boosted by the marauding Patrick van Aanholt from left-back — is, by and large, their stronger side and it’s hard to argue this fact with the presence of Eze — one of the most accomplished dribblers in the league and Zaha — who yearns to be isolated with an opposition defender.

While the former Manchester United attacker’s position has been tweaked slightly of late, he often drifts to both flanks with a bias for the inside-left channel apparent.

This leads to impressive combination play with the summer acquisition from QPR, who ranks seventh for successful dribbles per game from players with a significant number of appearances this season.

The Eagles’ expressiveness is expected to be curbed on Sunday as Hodgson will theoretically try to do to Spurs what Mourinho has done to restrain top opposition in the last few weeks.

Whether the club from South London can totally replicate this general approach is up in the air, but the likelihood of the North London side being less guarded than they were in their last three games poses different questions for Aurier if he starts.

Mourinho instructed Moussa Sissoko to drop into the area between the right-sided centre-back (Toby Alderweireld or Joe Rodon) to block the space in that inside-left channel, but it remains to be seen if the Lilywhites are as structured against their cross-town rivals.

Spurs are the only side to keep four successive clean sheets in the PL this season and that defensive steel, along with Aurier’s recent refinement, will face a decisively indicative test against a Palace attack boosted by recording their highest return of away goals in top flight history.

Mourners pay final respects to Pele at viewing

Juventus stunned Barcelona on Tuesday but must now turn their focus to Genoa in Serie A.

Andrea Pirlo wants Juventus to move on quickly from their impressive Champions League win at Barcelona, although says the Serie A champions must repeat their Camp Nou performance in the coming weeks.

The standout result of Pirlo's tenure so far saw Juve win 3-0 at Barca on Tuesday to top their group despite previously losing the home match when Cristiano Ronaldo was absent with coronavirus.

Ronaldo netted a pair of penalties and Weston McKennie added a stylish volley as the Bianconeri produced a clinical display.

But European competition is on hold now until the new year, meaning Juve's focus must return to their domestic title defence at Genoa.

Sunday's trip is the first of four matches remaining before the mid-season break and Pirlo's men are six points behind leaders AC Milan, prompting the coach to discard further reflection of a stunning midweek victory.

"If we still have [Barcelona] in mind, let's forget about it," Pirlo told Juventus TV . "We have to turn the page and have continuity.

"It must not be only this match against Barcelona, we must continue with this desire and pace, because now there is the championship and we must be at our best in these four games.

"These matches [like against Barca] bring great awareness of our improvements, so it can be a big confidence boost for the final matches before the break.

"We must have the same desire, the same concentration, because without this desire we face nasty surprises, so we concentrate to play great matches."

Juve have kept three clean sheets in their past six games in all competitions - conceding three goals - after a run of five matches without one.

But Pirlo believes his side's work going the other way has relieved the pressure on his defence, rather than seeing a vast improvement at the back.

Asked about the defence, the coach replied: "The desire to move forward is growing.

"When you go forward and attack, the opposition also have fewer opportunities to come and play in front [of your defence].

"So we have to be in the opposing half of the field, trying to have offensive pressing, then in the defensive phase, even when we are in our own area, we must be aggressive, not passive. We are growing."

Haller back in training after cancer battle

The Nigerian forward came off the bench to make a telling impact for Veljko Paunovic’s men at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium

Michael Olise scored the only goal in Reading’s 1-0 victory over Bright Osayi-Samuel’s Queens Park Rangers in Saturday’s Championship game.

The forward has been with the Royals’ academy since 2016 and last season he was promoted to the senior side following eye-catching performances in the youth set up.

Olise has continued his development with Veljko Paunovic’s men and bagged his first league goal against Barnsley in September.

The Nigerian was afforded his 18th league appearance this season for the Royals and shone, scoring the solitary goal that earned his side all three points.

The game started with both sides struggling to open the scoring and missed a number of opportunities.

In an effort to ensure his side clinched victory in the encounter, manager Paunovic introduced Olise for Nigeria international Sone Aluko in the 66th minute and made his impact felt.

The forward scored the all-important winning goal with five minutes left to play, firing his effort beyond the reach of goalkeeper Seny Dieng after receiving a timely assist from Tom McIntyre with one minute left to full time.

Another Nigerian Osayi-Samuel was on parade for QPR for 79 minutes but his effort was not enough to help his side avoid a defeat at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium before he was replaced by Macauley Bonne.

The victory moved Reading to fifth spot on the Championship table after accruing 33 points from 18 games.

Olise has now scored three goals and provided six assists in 19 appearances across all competitions this season.

The 19-year-old will be expected to continue his fine form for the Royals when they take on Norwich City in their next league game on December 16.

Juventus not trying to offload Paul Pogba - CFO

A man who made his own move to Anfield in 2013 considers the Brazil international to have been a shrewd investment on Merseyside

Philippe Coutinho was a “KFC bargain bucket” for Liverpool, says Daniel Sturridge, with the Brazil international signed from Inter for £8 million ($11m) and offloaded to Barcelona for £105m ($139m).

The Reds moved to snap up the South American playmaker from Inter during the January transfer window of 2013.

He would go on to spend five years at Anfield, scoring 54 goals in 201 appearances, before heading off to chase the dream at Camp Nou.

Sturridge was acquired in the same winter as Coutinho, with the England frontman lured away from Chelsea.

He also enjoyed initial success on Merseyside, hitting 67 goals in total for Liverpool, and considers himself to have been a “snip”.

Sturridge is, however, prepared to admit that Coutinho provided considerably more value, with those behind the scenes starting a trend that has continued in deals for the likes of Alisson, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

Discussing his own switch to Liverpool, Sturridge – who remains without a club at present after severing ties with Trabzonspor – told The Beautiful Game Podcast: “It was the perfect place for me, which is mad.

“My sister dreamt it. She said: 'I think you are going to play for Liverpool one day' - and I was like, 'What are you on about, you are talking foolishness.'

“She was like, 'I see you playing in red' - and I was like, 'What is she on about? I play for Chelsea.'

“To say the team was missing someone like me was how they sold it. We got Luis Suarez over here, unbelievable player, Stevie G [Steven Gerrard], who I trained with at England.

“They had a young Raheem [Sterling] and they also had ambitions as well. They said they were going to sign players. They then brought Coutinho in who was a bargain bucket. Bargain bucket man, a KFC bargain bucket!

“It was a snip and we were cheap. £12m for myself and £8m for Coutinho. I don’t know how much they earned from Coutinho.

“For myself, I was there a long time and signed another deal and saw the length of my contract out.

“But they just make great signings at the club. They know what they are doing. Michael Edwards and the team behind the scenes, they just know what they are doing.”

Sturridge slipped down the pecking order at Liverpool and eventually left in 2019, but he has fond memories of his time with a Premier League heavyweight.

The 31-year-old added: “The fans were just different. You play at Anfield – you’re getting the goosies.

“You’re walking through the tunnel getting the goosies; like the goosebumps and the hairs on your arm are standing up.

“You see the sign – some of the players are tapping the [This is] Anfield sign – and you’re thinking: [it’s] different over here!”

Too Good, Too Bad: The Best & Worst of Nigerians Abroad

The Nigeria forward played an inspiring role in Saturday's match as Lluis Cortes' side extended their impressive run

Asisat Oshoala netted her first hat-trick of the season for Barcelona in their 7-0 win over Valencia in the Spanish Primera Iberdrola encounter at Estadio Antonio Puchades on Saturday.

Oshoala returned to scoring ways for the Calatans in their last two outings, including in the Champions League following her recent nomination for the Uefa Women's Team of the Year 2020.

She ended her two-match league drought with a goal in the 9-0 victory against Santa Teresa before halting a 295 minutes Champions League dry spell with a goal in Wednesday's 4-1 win at PSV.

Following her back-to-back scoring exploits, Lluis Cortes handed the Nigeria international her fifth start of the season and she made the best of her chance to inspire her side's eighth successive win.

Desperate to reclaim the top spot, Aitana Bonmati set up Mariona Caldentey to open the scoring for the visitors after just one minute.

In the 28th minute, Caroline Graham Hansen provided an assist for Caldentey to double Barcelona's lead with her second of the tie before the Norwegian got on the scoresheet seven minutes later.

Six minutes from the break, Hansen assisted Oshoala to net a fourth before the Nigerian was teed up by Patri Guijarro to bag her brace and the fifth for the visitors on the brink of half time.

10 minutes after the restart, Bonmati helped Marta Torrejon to extend Cortes' team's lead before Vicky Losada aided Oshoala to complete her treble of the match 17 minutes from time.

Oshoala lasted the entire duration of the encounter on Saturday and has taken her goal tally to six in eight league matches this season.

With six goals so far, she has now emerged the team's joint-top scorer with Jenni Hermoso, Mariona Caldentey and Lieke Martens.

The big win helps Barcelona regain top spot on the table and Oshoala will hope to continue his impressive goalscoring run at home against PSV in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Video: Pep Guardiola in numbers - the story at City

Kylian Mbappe has been strongly linked with Real Madrid, but for now the forward remains a key fixture in Thomas Tuchel's PSG team.

Christian Karembeu is longing to hear whether Kylian Mbappe commits to Paris Saint-Germain or decides joining Real Madrid is his destiny.

With barely 18 months remaining on his Parc des Princes contract, the future of Mbappe is coming into sharp focus.

PSG would love him to stay and lead their project in the long term, as they attempt to win the Champions League and develop a club profile to match the likes of Madrid.

However, there is little doubt that Madrid would be near the front of the queue should Mbappe decide he wants to experience another football culture.

Karembeu, a World Cup winner with France in 1998, believes there can be no rushing the striker who helped Les Bleus repeat the global triumph in 2018.

"It's a dream but we have to wait," Karembeu said of a player who recently hit the 100-goal milestone for the club. "The Madrid fans have been waiting for Kylian for a year or two.

"He hasn't come yet. It's the same thing for Paul Pogba."

Karembeu told Stats Perform News courtesy of Nissan: "Today, Kylian has to decide his objectives and his plans, if he wants to go to Real Madrid or stay at Paris.

"The 'Casa Blanca' is eternal. Players can come and go, but Real is immortal."

Karembeu, who had three years at Madrid before joining Middlesbrough in 2000, can nonetheless see PSG taking shape as a major European force.

Their run to last season's final of the Champions League caught the eye, and they recovered impressively in the group campaign this year after a painful home defeat to Manchester United and a loss to RB Leipzig

Karembeu played when Real Madrid ended a 32-year wait for their seventh European Cup/Champions League crown in the 1998 final against Juventus.

He drew a parallel between Madrid building towards that, and going on to enjoy more sustained success over the next 20 years, with what PSG are doing.

"I talked about Real Madrid. It's 32 years of scarcity to be able to conquer the 'septima', the 'octava' and so many others. It takes a lot of patience," Karembeu said.

"That's what I believe this Parisian team has been doing for many years."

With the backing of Qatar Sports Investments, PSG have been able to compete against Europe's elite in the transfer market, bringing in Neymar for €222 million (£203m / $269m ) from Barcelona when they activated his buy-out clause, while also attracting Angel Di Maria and keeping hold of Mbappe so far.

"They have accumulated criticism," Karembeu said. "Nevertheless, they have always invested in football, in the players and in the structure of the club.

"They have innovated to get results. Last year they played the final, this year they qualified [for the last 16]."

Karembeu has been impressed by the calibre of PSG's statement signings since the Qatari investors came on board, seeing positive benefits for Ligue 1 as a whole.

"Since they arrived, they have managed to give visibility to the French championship by bringing in big stars like Zlatan [Ibrahimovic], [David] Beckham and many others," Karembeu said.

"[You can] see PSG and the French championship to inspire other generations like [Presnel] Kimpembe and so many others to play in the Champions League and become world champions, but also to go further and further in the European cups."

Manchester United and Chelsea approaching Champions League D-Day

Bayern Munich were in danger of losing only their second game this year, but Robert Lewandowski denied Union Berlin.

Robert Lewandowski's strike sent Bayern Munich back to the top of the Bundesliga but the European champions had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Union Berlin.

Grischa Promel's early header put Union in front at Stadion An der Alten Forsterei on Saturday, but they were unable to consign Bayern to what would have been a first defeat in 17 matches.

Lewandowski's 16th goal in as many games this season brought Hansi Flick's side level and neither team could force a winner in a pulsating contest.

The defending champions have now drawn three of their past four Bundesliga games but sit at the summit above RB Leipzig on goal difference.

Union stunned Bayern by taking the lead inside four minutes, Promel glancing Christopher Trimmel's inviting corner just inside the far post for his first goal since May 2019.

Taiwo Awoniyi spurned a glorious chance to double their lead when he dragged a left-foot finish just wide with only Manuel Neuer to beat after a mistake from Alphonso Davies.

Lewandowski wanted a penalty when he felt Marvin Friedrich had brought him down as he was about to pull the trigger and Andreas Luthe palmed away Serge Gnabry's rasping drive - Bayern's first shot on target - late in an entertaining first half, in which Union lost Marcus Ingvartsen to injury.

Luthe spread himself superbly to deny Kingsley Coman before Neuer had to be alert when Awoniyi was almost picked out by a clever ball over the top.

Sheraldo Becker dragged a shot wide as Union continued to pose a threat, but Lewandowski finished clinically first time from close to the penalty spot to level after Coman pulled the ball back following a great run down the left.

Keita Endo wasted a chance to put Union back in front and Luthe produced a great late reflex save to keep out Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting's late header as the two sides had to settle for a point.
