New signing Danial Amier realise that Johor Darul Ta'zim will offer him a tough challenge but vows to fight for his place at star-studded outfit.

Young midfielder Danial Amier was officially unveiled as the latest signing for Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) on Tuesday morning as he adds to the plethora of options available to the seven-time Malaysia Super Champions for the 2021 season and beyond.

Moving away from Felda United, the 23-year-old central midfielder who is also a Malaysian international has inked a 2-year contract with the Southern Tigers, giving him a chance to not only compete for the highest honours in the country but also a chance to feature in the AFC Champions League.

Club owner Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim (TMJ) could not hide his delight in his latest capture and firmly believes that Danial is one for the long-term as JDT begins the a phase of replacements for the local players who have or are close to the wrong side of 30.

“We’re very excited to have him (Danial). To me it’s a great honour and pleasure to have a player who is not only talented but one who is willing to take the challenge at JDT because we all know that JDT is an established club that is continuing to improve," said TMJ during the press conference.

"We know it’s tough to be in the JDT squad where there are a lot of great players but what I admire about Danial is the fighting spirit that he has to face the challenge. I think he has made the right decision to join the best club in the country.

And a tough fight Danial will have when he joins the team properly for pre-season training in the coming weeks. A regular starter at Felda under Nidzam Jamil, things will not be that straight-forward for him at the new club where he has to duke it out with the best in the country.

Hariss Harun, Afiq Fazail, Leandro Velazquez, Nazmi Faiz, Syamer Kutty Abba, Ignacio (Natxo) Insa and Gary Steven Robbat are those that will compete with Danial for the central midfield berth, assuming JDT maintain their preferred 4-3-3 formation for the coming season.

But Danial has had more than a year to at least prepare mentally for this new challenge as it is widely known that JDT attempted to sign him before the start of the 2019 season. It is clear what Danial brings to the party and with him being to operate in at least two of the three midfield roles, there's little to suggest he would not get his playing time.

“I was surprised when I found out that JDT were interested because it’s not an honour that many players get to experience. It became a big motivation for me to work harder, to change myself, to change my mentality - all for me to arrive here," explained Danial.

“Of course I knew coming in that JDT has great players with great foreign players. I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and be in a team where I know I can grow and develop myself. It’s a challenge to myself to be better and prove myself during training and where I get the opportunity on the pitch.

“I chose JDT for a lot of reasons. I have good friends here who have succeeded and they told me that it will be good for me to come here and grow. It’s only fair when an employer spends the time and money to get a player, they want something back in return. It’s up to me to be prepared and face the challenges.

“In any team, if we don’t fight for our place then you will only get to sit on the bench. Even at Felda, I’ve been put on the bench. It will be tougher at JDT but sitting on the bench it’s not something I’m thinking about because I would not be here if I only think of that."

Douglas Luiz stalls on signing new Aston Villa contract

The Egyptian frontman has suggested that he may be tempted to head for Spain if the opportunity presents itself, but no decision has been made as yet

Mohamed Salah should hate Real Madrid, not want to join them, says John Aldridge, with the Liverpool forward suggesting that he may be open to making a move to Spain at some point.

The Egyptian has sparked fresh speculation regarding his future by admitting that he cannot rule out a move to Santiago Bernabeu, or to Barcelona on the other side of a fierce Clasico divide.

Salah has told AS: “I think Madrid and Barcelona are two top clubs.

“Who knows what will happen in the future, but right now I am focused on winning the Premier League and the Champions League with Liverpool again.”

Aldridge is not surprised to see transfer talk rage around a global superstar, with Salah now forming part of world football’s elite, but he would like to see the 28-year-old steer clear of Madrid given that the Blancos – and Sergio Ramos in particular – dashed his Champions League dreams in controversial circumstances back in 2018.

“If you’re a player of Salah’s quality, you’re always going to be linked with Real Madrid, Barcelona and other such deals. Harry Kane will be the next one as Tottenham fall away. That’s just the way it is,” former Reds striker Aldridge told the Liverpool Echo.

“Sadio Mane is talked about too. We’re talking about one of the very best forwards in the world. Mane, Salah - they’re always going to be linked with Real Madrid.

“Personally, I think after the experience of the Champions League final and the way Ramos treated him, I’d have had a hatred for Real Madrid if it was me, after that incident. It wouldn’t appeal to me but I wouldn’t want to leave Liverpool anyway.

“It’s up to Jurgen Klopp and what he wants. You have to trust the manager to deal with such situations when they arise in the right way. Players are so strong now, if they want to go then they’ll go. End of story.

“But Liverpool have got the best front three in the world, that goes without saying. Tottenham have got a fantastic front three and there’s other clubs as well, but you wouldn’t swap Salah, Mane or Firmino for anyone.”

Salah stepped off the bench to bag a record-setting brace for Liverpool in their 7-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday, with Sadio Mane less than impressed at having to make way for a club colleague that he has not always seen eye-to-eye with.

Aldridge has no issue with a public display of frustration from a Senegalese winger, adding: “I’m made up when players don’t want to come off, I used to do it all the time. I never wanted to come off, especially for Ireland. Jack Charlton always used to take me off with 15 minutes to go in a lot of games and I used to hate it and have a little go at Jack.

“But he knew what was best for me and I’m sure Jurgen has told Sadio, ‘I’m protecting you, I need you, you’re vital for me. I just don’t want you to get over-worked or injured.’

“That will have been the only reason and it was great to see his reaction because he’s hungry for goals. He’s not been scoring lately and he’s got his first goal back, that’s all it is.

“He wanted more and I have no problem with that.”

Mamelodi Sundowns player ratings after edging Black Leopards to open gap on top of PSL

The veteran tactician is happy with the first four matches of the 2020-21 season as the league takes a break for the Chan competition

Express FC head coach Wasswa Bbosa is contented with how his charges have launched their campaign to win the elusive Ugandan Premier League (UPL) title.

The Red Eagles have started the 2020-21 season with two wins and two draws and are now on eight points and with a game on the leaders.

The team’s latest result saw them come top in the derby as they edged out SC Villa 1-0 at Wankuluku on Saturday.

With the top-flight taking a break until February 2021 to pave way for the African Nations Championship (Chan) to be held in Cameroon, and where Uganda will be represented, Bbosa has now said he is satisfied for now.

“First of all people have to know we started the league under adversity [Covid-19] so players had taken a while without training as a group which is hard to handle coming into a new season but am glad we’ve managed to slide through,” Bbosa said as quoted by the club’s official website.

“My technical team especially strength and conditioning led by Helen Buteme has done a fantastic job and I know we have more work to do but worry not, we shall be ready when the league resumes again.”

On beating Villa in the derby, Bbosa said: “The most important thing is that we have earned the three points in the derby, our target remains trying to win silverware, this is now done, we look forward to the next game, come next year," he told the same publication.

Against Villa, Express delivered an early Christmas present to the fans after George Ssenkaaba cooly and calmly slotted home from the left-wing, leaving shot-stopper Saidi Keni helpless, for the winning goal.

The game saw both teams cancel each other out in either half with few chances to write home about. Forward Eric Kambale rattled the crossbar 18 minutes into the game while Kabonge Nicolas sent his freekick off the mark from just outside the 18-yard area.

The Red Eagles, who are in position six on the 16-team log, have had a seven-year silverware drought with 2012 being the last time they won the league title.

After signing a three-year deal to handle the side, Bbosa revealed one of his main targets is to help the club to reclaim the league title.

Hakim Ziyech ready to seek Chelsea exit over lack of playing time

It will be the first ever confrontation between these sides as the Angolans seek to upset the seasoned Buccaneers

Orlando Pirates begin their 2020/21 Caf Confederation Cup campaign with a first round visit to Angola for Tuesday’s clash against Sagrada Esperanca at the Coqueiros Municipal Stadium.

After the disappointment of preliminary round elimination from last season’s Caf Champions League at the hands of Zambian side Green Eagles, Pirates are back in Africa.

They will be hoping for improved fortunes in the second-tier continental club competition, in which they last participated in 2015 when they reached the final and lost to Tunisian side Etoile du Sahel.

It will also be the first time ever for Pirates and Sagrada Esperanca to face each other.

Interestingly, the game in Luanda will be Pirates' third straight match in three different competitions after lifting the MTN8 trophy on December 12, before beating Chippa United in a league match four days later.

Tuesday’s match will see Pirates coach Josef Zinnbauer taking charge of his first ever African inter-club match.

Expectations are high for the German to see if he can steer Pirates back among the most feared sides on the continent, and the 1995 African champions, who also reached the 2013 final of the Caf Champions League, are expected to reach the latter stages of the Confederation Cup.

At his disposal, Zinnbauer has seasoned players in the form of Bafana Bafana captain Thulani Hlatshwayo, Ghana number one goalkeeper Richard Ofori, Innocent Maela, Deon Hotto as well as forwards Frank Mhango and Thembinkosi Lorch.

DR Congo forward Jean-Marc Makusu has experience in the Confederation Cup after helping AS Vita reach the final of this tournament in 2018 where he finished as the competition's second top goalscorer.

It is, however, not yet clear if the Congolese will be available to play on Tuesday.

Match Preview

In terms of match fitness, Pirates go into this match with a huge advantage over their opponents who were last involved in competitive action in March just before the Angolan Girabola was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

That tips the odds in favour of Pirates who have played 11 matches across all competitions this season and are yet to lose a single match.

The Buccaneers start their Confederation Cup journey at this stage of the competition after receiving a preliminary round bye. They now face their Angolan opponents, whose last appearance in Africa was a play-off stage exit from the 2016 Confederation Cup after getting past three hurdles.

Sagrada Esperanca accepted to participate in this season's tournament as replacement for Interclube who opted against taking part. They then earned a first round spot without kicking a ball after their preliminary stage opponents Mbabane Swallows withdrew from the competition.

It is not the first time for the Angolan side to take on a South African opponents side as they eliminated Cape Town Spurs (then as Ajax Cape Town) from this competition in the 2016 edition’s preliminary round on a 3-2 aggregate scoreline.

Twitter reacts to extraordinary Liverpool meltdown against Leicester

The former African champions will be looking to transfer their domestic form into their continental campaign

Mamelodi Sundowns’ eight-match unbeaten run will be tested against Jwaneng Galaxy on Tuesday when the two sides meet in a Caf Champions League first round match at Lobatse Stadium.

Arriving in Botswana against a backdrop of five Premier Soccer League wins and three draws, Downs will be looking to add a positive result on the continent to that domestic form.

They face a Galaxy side that have a contrasting profile to theirs and will be keen to avoid an upset.

While Sundowns are celebrating 50 years of existence and having established themselves as continental heavyweights, Galaxy were founded in 2005 following a merger between Jwaneng Comets and Debswana Youngsters and are new to the Champions League.

Themba Zwane is Sundowns’ man of the moment so far this season after managing seven PSL goals in as many league matches.

After the attacker was rested for Downs’ last league match away at Golden Arrows, he is expected to be back for the Galaxy assignment together with Kermit Erasmus, who has not featured in Masandawana’s last two games.

The Botswana champions could be in for a torrid afternoon if Zwane combines with Erasmus and Peter Shalulile to complete an attacking partnership that has terrorised PSL defences.

In the Arrows game, Sundowns' coaches also rested other key players like captain Hlompho Kekana and Rivaldo Coetzee, who could also be given a run on Tuesday.

Jwaneng Galaxy will be welcoming back Botswana international goalkeeper Ezekiel Morake who rejoined the club on a two-year deal from PSL side TS Galaxy.

It is a big boost for the Jwaneng-based outfit, who have also confirmed that attacker Gift Moyo and defender Lesego Keeredilwe are available for selection after recovering from injuries.

Midfielder Gape Mohutsiwa has also been certified fit to play.

Match Preview

Jwaneng Galaxy and Sundowns have never met before.

Since football was suspended in Botswana in March owing to the coronavirus pandemic, Galaxy's only taste of competitive action since then was the recent Champions League preliminary round victory over Zilimadjou from the Comoros.

A 5-1 aggregate victory was recorded by the Botswana champions from the two-legged stage saw them win 4-0 at home, before forcing a 1-1 away draw.

Coach Sikalame ‘Six’ Keatlholetswe will be hoping that those two games were enough to gear up his side for the Downs challenge.

Sundowns players, meanwhile, arrive at Lobatse Stadium with a lot of game time under their belts after playing nine games in all competitions so far this season and have been in fine form.

The winner of this round will proceed to the Champions League group stage.

For a team that is making their maiden appearance in the Champions League, it would be a massive achievement if Galaxy beat Downs and reach the tournament’s next round.

Verona 1-1 Juventus: Player ratings as draw dents visitors' Serie A title hopes

The Chamazi-based giants have refuted claims the recent run of poor results of the team is because of unpaid bonuses

Azam FC have vehemently denied reports the team’s recent poor run in the Mainland Premier League is a result of player bonuses being reduced.

The Chamazi-based giants started the season on a flying note, winning seven straight matches which saw them top the 18-team table for almost two months.

However, after losing to Mtibwa Sugar away, the team’s problems started, as they moved to sack coach Aristica Cioaba and later appointed Zambian George Lwandamina to handle the side on a one-year deal.

And despite hiring Lwandamina, the ‘Ice Cream Makers' have not won a match since firing Cioaba and now they have gone for six straight matches without a win, their latest result a 2-2 draw against Ruvu Shooting at Chamazi Complex Stadium.

The club’s CEO Abdulkarim ‘Popat’ Amin has now come out to explain that the team’s run of poor results is not because they decided to reduce bonuses of players, insisting they had instead, improved them.

“About the issue that we have reduced bonuses of our players is not true since we have never owed any player, including coaches, any form of either signing fees or monthly salaries,” Amin said as quoted by Daily News.

“Instead, this season we have improved the status of player bonuses such that previously, they used to share the allowance given to them with the technical bench but now, players have their own bonus so is the coaching staff.”

Amin further explained in the final meeting with players before the 2020-21 season kicked off, they had agreed if they win three consecutive games, they will be given an extra bonus.

On whether they have tried to find out what could be the reason behind the run of poor results, Amin said: “Under the new coach [Zambian George Lwandamina], the team can now score at least more than two goals and at the same time create numerous scoring chances even though we still have a problem of conceding goals.

“I think the coach has seen the issue of creating scoring chances has at least been resolved hence he needs to find a long-lasting solution to arrest the problems of conceding goals.”

Azam, who are third on the 18-team table, will end their first-round fixtures with a clash against champions Simba SC.

Ozil move to Fenerbahce making 'some progress' as Turkish giants hope for 'dream' signing of Arsenal outcast

It was expected to be a battle of wits between two astute tacticians Antonio Lopez Habas and Carles Cuadrat as old foes ATK Mohun Bagan met Bengaluru FC for the first time in the Indian Super League (ISL) on Monday.

A tactical match was always on cards as both teams prefer to play in a pragmatic manner more often than not. But Antonio Habas surprised everyone including Carles Cuadrat as ATK Mohun Bagan took an attacking approach right from the off.

Habas deployed his side in an attacking 4-3-3 formation with David Williams, Roy Krishna and Manvir starting in the front three and Spanish attacking midfielder playing an advanced role. Pronay Halder and Carl McHugh stayed deep in midfield to provide the balance.

In the absence of Javier Hernandez, Edu Garcia was assigned the responsibility of dictating the game down the middle and the former Bengaluru man did not disappoint. The Spaniard was the focal point of most of ATK Mohun Bagan’s attack and played a pivotal role.

The trio up front were a constant threat David Williams and Manvir operating freely on the flanks. Both Harmanjot Khabra and Rahul Bheke had a forgettable outing as they failed to keep a check on Williams and Manvir.

The Australian forward had been struggling to find his best form this season, due to fitness issues, but he decided to light up in a big game. David Williams was ATK’s saviour in last season’s second leg semifinal clash and this time he proved to be ATK Mohun Bagan’s knight in shining armour against a team Habas considers to be one of the best in the league.

Bengaluru FC are known for their quick movements down the flanks but thanks to some efficient defending by Pritam Kotal and Subhasish Bose, Sunil Chhetri and Udanta Singh were kept quiet for most of the game. In fact, Cuadrat was forced to bench Udanta at the beginning of the second half as the India international failed to have an influence in the game. The Blues also missed the swiftness of Ashique Kuruniyan on the left side as Rahul Bheke was nowhere close to the Malayali player in terms of agility.

Cleiton Silva and Dimas Delgado failed to make an impact in the game. Credit must be given to McHugh and Halder for now allowing any open space to the Blues duo.

ATK Mohun Bagan’s defending has been top-notch right from the first game but they did not look fluent. But this match showed that Habas’ side are capable of playing an attacking style of play. They did so well in the first half before playing defensively in the second half. It also helped that Garcia, Williams and Krishna were all good on the ball and were able to negotiate tight spaces with ease.

The ATKMB players are getting fitter with every passing game and this performance would have pleased Habas.

Olunga to wear jersey number 26 at Al Duhail SC as he starts against Al Sadd

Lalengmawia is satisfied with his progression this season after becoming ISL's youngest ever captain...

Former NorthEast United head coach Robert Jarni had said that the 20-year-old midfielder Lalengmawia, part of the India U17 team which participated in the 2017 U17 World Cup, was one of the top three midfielders in India

The defensive midfield talent, who impressed under the Croatian last season, has continued his development this season as well. He recently became the youngest player to be named captain in the league and the Highlanders boss Gerard Nus has also praised the youngster recently, saying he expects a lot of good things from the player.

"It’s been a good progression. All the hard work is paying off and I hope to continue doing well for myself and for the team," Lalengmawia told Goal.

He has started six out of seven games NorthEast has played and has become a key player for Nus alongside Khassa Camara in the centre of the midfield.

"For any player, game time is always important. It boosts your confidence and there are so many things that you can learn by getting to play and being in the midst of things.

"Gerard Nus has been fantastic and is always motivating us. This helps us on the pitch. My role in midfield is similar to what I did last season," the former Indian Arrows midfielder explained.

It is difficult for footballers to play amid a pandemic while staying inside a bio-bubble for several months. For a 20-year-old, it could be a monumental task but Lalengmawia is passing time by playing games on his Playstation. NorthEast United have struggled to compete for the playoffs in the last few seasons and ISL's youngest ever captain is hopeful that things will soon fall into place.

"I don’t want to dwell on the past, but we wish to take it a match at a time and give our best. Everything else will fall in place.

"Staying inside a bio-bubble is difficult no doubt but we have to adapt to the circumstances. At least getting to play football brings a smile to our face. I mostly pass my time by playing on the PlayStation," he said.

The Highlanders lie fourth on the league table with 10 points from seven matches.

Arsenal transfers summer 2021: The players to keep, sell and release

At the start of the decade, league football in Nigeria found itself at a crossroads

fter a landmark court ruling in 2010 threw the Premier League into a state of chaos, an Interim Management Committee (IMC) was set up by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and tasked with reforming the league. It set about incorporating an independent administrative body and thus, in November 2012, the League Management Company (LMC) was born. The new body immediately went about the task of restructuring the league and has since then been in charge of its affairs.

However, despite an unbroken seven-year period since incorporation, the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) – under the auspices of the LMC – has failed to live up to its fullest potential and remains mired in incompetence and uncertainty. Concerns like stadium violence, poor welfare for players and match officials, an arbitrary football calendar, and fiscal corruption have not only stripped the league of colour and value, but have over time driven away sponsors and investors.

These have added up to a league that is professional in name alone. Even worse, those saddled with the responsibility of overseeing the league have been found wanting both administratively and in terms of basic accountability: despite being contacted, LMC Chairman Shehu Dikko has declined to comment on the concerns above, in much the same way that he does not seem to have the answers to the league’s many ills either.

MEDIA BLACKOUT

One of the issues that has plagued the league has been the inability of its organisers to hammer out a working broadcast strategy, a failing that has impeded not only its commercial potential, but its sporting progress.

In August 2013, the LMC announced it had signed a four-year television rights deal with satellite broadcaster Supersport from 2015 to 2019. The deal was reported to be worth $34m, of which Supersport paid a two-year advance of $4m as a sweetener to fund the running of the league.

In 2017 though, two years shy of the expiration of the contract, Supersport announced it was pulling out of the agreement, ostensibly as a consequence of the prevailing economic situation in the country. The naira suffering against the dollar, combined with the absence of return on investment – the LMC were apparently not doing enough to market the league and drive viewership – meant it was not expedient for the partnership to continue.

Since then, there have been a number of attempts aimed at getting the league back on screens, but despite grandiose announcements, none has culminated in anything concrete.

In November 2019, a flicker of light appeared to shine in the form of digital broadcaster Next TV, with whom the LMC auspiciously announced it had reached a joint venture agreement to the tune of $225m for a five-year period. “We are doing something that has never been done in Nigeria before,” said Dikko, “but it is a model that has worked and is still working elsewhere.”

Per the terms, both parties would collaborate in terms of production, sales, distribution and commercialisation of content, with the live games broadcast first via OTT (Over The Top) transmission and subsequently made available to terrestrial and cable channels interested in purchasing rights.

However, despite the initial fanfare, there has to date been nothing concrete on the ground in terms of execution. Even more jarring is the absence of any form of accounting as concerns the financial aspects of the Next TV deal. In April 2020, Dikko blamed the lack of activation on the absence of production equipment (a curious explanation), claimed the LMC was still “working on getting the equipment” and stated that a mobile application had already been built for OTT transmission, implying the agreement was still in effect.

It came as a surprise then when, in early September 2020, yet another long-term joint venture partnership was signed, this time with UK sports marketing company Redstrike, to create a new company called NPFL Marketing. To summarise the long-winded, confusing communique that accompanied the announcement, the LMC has effectively outsourced its marketing and media, with a new platform – NPFL.tv – to be created for the streaming of live league matches. According to Dikko, this collaboration is “exactly what Nigerian football needs”; he referred to it as “ground-breaking” and extolled Redstrike’s “technical ability to deliver NPFL.tv”. It is worth noting that domain name remains inactive to date, and there is as yet no mobile app despite the league being slated to resume on December 27, 2020.

It is as yet unclear what Redstrike is paying for this privilege, or what effect this partnership has on the previous one with Next TV. Beyond figures in the press and on paper, where has the $225m from the latter company gone, and does that agreement no longer stand? Indeed, there has been no explanation whatsoever, official or otherwise.

This has led to a threat of legal action, with Next TV demanding over $18m in damages from the LMC for breach of contract in a letter dated September 30, 2020. “By your wanton breach of the agreement between (the LMC) and our client,” the letter reads, “you have not only caused a reversal of the gains the country has made in the recent past in relation to the development of our football league and industry, you have also caused our client enormous damages”. The letter also confirmed that Next TV had made financial commitments toward “infrastructure, hardware and software, and non-refundable deposits”.

DECADE-LONG TITLE SPONSORSHIP DEBACLE

Another area where a lack of transparency has severely undermined the league is in title sponsorships.

In 2017, the LMC announced it was moving away from having a designated title sponsor for the league. This decision, following the end of its affiliation with Mobile phone operator Globacom in 2015 and the futility of its search for a replacement in the ensuing two years, was with a view to “going for multiple sponsors based on exclusive categories as well as strategic partner(s),” according to Dikko. “Even the EPL in England have now dropped Barclays which used to be their title sponsor,” he said.

Interestingly, despite citing the Premier League as a model and trumpeting the benefits of eschewing a title sponsor in favour of a divested portfolio, title sponsorship does not, in itself, preclude associate sponsorships, so this was simply another case of muddled communication and cart-before-horse on the part of the league administrators.

In truth, their decision probably had more to do with a lawsuit instituted by a certain Total Promotions Limited (TPL).

Five years prior, TPL (on behalf of South African multinational telecommunications giant MTN) outbid Globacom, the second national phone operator, for the right to title sponsorship of the NPFL (known, at the time, as the Nigeria Premier League) for four years.

It was, however, far from an amicable victory: in January 2011, the NPL Congress, backed by the National Sports Commission (NSC), called for a fresh round of bidding, and TPL dragged both parties – as well as the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) – before the Federal High Court. What followed was a protracted legal tussle that lasted two years. During this period, not only was the league without a title sponsor, but its administration passed onto the newly-incorporated LMC.

For MTN, it was a case of deja vu.

Back in May 2003, MTN said the country’s football authority (then NFA) had accepted its offer of $2 million, spread over a four-year period, to sponsor the premier league.

“It is my pleasure to announce that the NFA has accepted our offer... (and) this is a turning point in the history of Nigerian sports,” then MTN chief executive officer Adrian Wood told reporters in Lagos. MTN said it planned to spend an additional $5million on promotional programmes associated with the premier league. But Globacom fired back, maintaining it had an existing contract with the NFA as the premier league sponsors.

Once the dust settled following the intervention of the country’s government, the local operators only won the battle but not the war.

As it was in 2003, so it was again in 2013. Erstwhile Sports Minister Bolaji Abdullahi, through a process of mediation between the feuding parties, eked out a Memorandum of Understanding between them in March: the title sponsorship would pass to Globacom, who would pay an undisclosed sum (later revealed to be N100 million) to TPL to cede the rights.

In May 2013, the LMC signed a title sponsorship agreement with Globacom for three years (2012/13 to 2014/15) to the tune of approximately $11.8m. In the same year, the LMC received a pay-out of $3.4m, from which it paid out $1.2m to the NPFL’s 20 clubs on a pro rata basis.

However, by mid-June, TPL repudiated the agreement in the MOU, claiming they had not received the agreed settlement and accusing the LMC of subterfuge in signing with and announcing Globacom as the new title sponsor. This sparked yet more litigation, carrying on through to 2015 when Globacom elected not to renew its sponsorship with the LMC.

The league administrator held preliminary talks with both Zenith Bank and Etisalat (now 9mobile), but with TPL publicly threatening to join any new title sponsor in the lawsuit, both companies ultimately developed cold feet.

The current attempt at a divestiture of the league’s sponsorship can, therefore, be seen for what it is: a disingenuous attempt at a workaround for a situation that remains a matter of jurisprudence.

LACK OF TRANSPARENCY PRESAGES BLEAK OUTLOOK

Under Dikko, there are two clear failings: an inability to attract an appropriate scale of investment, but also a lack of accountability in the deals that are secured. The league has, in fact, attracted some sizeable sponsorships, but they do not trickle down to the clubs under their purview, who are still dependent of their respective state governments for sustenance.

This, in a way, is the crux of the problem, and the major area in which change can be driven. It may very well be necessary for state governments to surrender their interests in club football permanently, as under their purview, the clubs are more political tools than proper concerns, and are as such underfunded. A hard reset in this manner would force the LMC to buckle up, aware of their wider responsibility to the league, and would also serve as a driver for probity.

However, achieving this would require a deep rethink of the wider sports policy in Nigeria, notably in terms of the procedure by which leadership positions are decided, as well as a clear delineation of targets and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

The LMC’s governance of the league also leaves a lot to be desired. For instance, in light of poor welfare for match officials, match-fixing is a spectre that cannot be escaped. Similarly, there is a lack of will (or even moral standing, as clubs have not received any prize money since 2016, when Rangers International won the NPFL under Imama Amapakabo) when it comes to mandating security measures to stamp out violence in stadiums and in punishing misconduct and unsporting behaviour on the part of the clubs; and even in terms of club licensing, which is only now being enforced by the intervention of the sports ministry, despite being a part of the LMC’s statutes for many years.

Instead, under the current leadership of the LMC, a rampant culture of corruption and mismanagement continues to severely cripple football on the local scene.

Ultimately, until there exists the political will to stridently make a statement (or scapegoat) out of someone at the helm of affairs, these issues will likely persist.

Fikayo Tomori joins AC Milan on loan from Chelsea

The Germany international drew a blank as Chelsea beat West Ham 3-0 at Stamford Bridge, but his manager wasn't concerned

Frank Lampard was ‘gutted’ Timo Werner did not end his Chelsea goal drought against West Ham, but feels the floodgates will open soon.

Werner had a great chance to snap a drought that now sits at nine games, but he smashed a shot against the bar following excellent approach play from N’Golo Kante.

The Germany international, who said fatigue was a problem, also had a good chance in the first half of the 3-0 win, but he got the ball stuck under his feet and shot weakly at Lukasz Fabianski.

Failing to take the chances will hurt Werner, but Lampard is happy his player is getting in dangerous areas and feels the goals will come.

“I am gutted Timo did not get his goal at the end,” Lampard said. "That would have been great for his confidence. He is getting chances so the goals will come.”

Lampard, who was full of praise for Thiago Silva, feels the summer signing from RB Leipzig is in an adaptation phase that he will come through and show exactly why Chelsea splashed £47.5 million ($64m / €52.2m) to bring him to the club.

“I’m not worried,” Lampard said on the club’s official website. “Every striker will want to be scoring goals, it’s what they ultimately get judged on and that’s why Timo was a great acquisition for us because of the level of goals he’s scored in the last few years.

“He’s a player in a new league and we have to give him time to settle but he’s getting in positions regularly, he’s scaring teams and giving them a problem.

“It’s not quite going in for him at the moment but the moment that changes then we’ll see goals from Timo Werner for sure.”

While Werner drew a blank, albeit he got an assist, Tammy Abraham netted twice and Lampard was thrilled with the England striker’s performance.

“It’s good for his confidence clearly,” Lampard said of Abraham. “You have to work for your goals and he worked for them today because he put a lot of effort in. I wanted him to be a handful and to have energy and move the backline which he did.

‘Oli Giroud has been doing it for us in his own way and scoring goals so it was a decision more on the opposition today to play Tammy and I was pleased with how he did.”

USWNT beat Colombia again on Rapinoe brace

The Brazil defender was on the scoresheet as the Blues beat West Ham 3-0 on Monday

Frank Lampard has admitted to being surprised by the quality Thiago Silva has brought to his Chelsea side, saying he was not capable of such displays at the same stage in his own career.

Brazil defender Thiago Silva made the move to Chelsea from Paris Saint-Germain this summer, and he has slotted in seamlessly in the Premier League.

He set Chelsea on the way to three points against West Ham with a brilliant header on 10 minutes.

It is testament to his quality that he has adapted so well at the age of 36, an age Lampard says he found it tough to perform on a consistent basis.

“I remember playing in the Premier League at 36 and I could not play like he’s been playing, week in, week out,” Lampard told Sky Sports . “I was in and out of the team and I could feel it at that stage of my career.

"I knew he was a top player, and has been a top player for a long time, but the pressures of the Premier League when you have never played in it. So he has exceeded it (expectations). But I should not have been surprised as I am working with him.

"The preparation, the reading of the game, the desire to win headers and to compete against anyone he is playing against.”

Lampard, who was  thrilled with the character his side showed against West Ham, feels Thiago Silva would ease straight into a coaching role should he wish to take that direction when he retires.

“He is studious and will be a manager or whatever he wants to be afterwards," Lampard said.

“He has been a great addition on and off the pitch.”

Thiago Silva has two goals to his name since joining Chelsea, with his header against West Ham following up on his effort in the 4-1 win over Sheffield United in November.

While the goal is important, the defender would have been just as happy with the clean sheet against the Hammers.

Since making the move to Stamford Bridge, Thiago Silva has been involved in eight Chelsea clean sheets.

Up next for Chelsea and their Brazilian defender is a meeting with Arsenal on Boxing Day, which is followed by a visit from Aston Villa.

Athletic Club 1-1 Barcelona: Player ratings as Memphis gets off the mark

The England international said the Blues were just focusing up picking wins and not worrying about their league position

Tammy Abraham insists Chelsea aren't concerned with the Premier League table as his two goals helped the team to a 3-0 win against West Ham on Monday.

The Blues went into the game in ninth position on a congested league table but finished the night in fifth position after a crushing win over their London rivals at Stamford Bridge.

Abraham has found himself in and out of the team following the signing of Timo Werner and form of Olivier Giroud, but the no.9 took his chances with two clinical second-half finishes after Thiago Silva's first-half opener.

The 23-year-old acknowledged the need for the Blues to pick up three points but said he wasn't looking at their position in the Premier League standings.

"We needed a performance, I need to be in the right places at the right times, we had to stay patient but luckily we got the three points," Abraham told BBC.

"I need to help the team with either goals or assists, or just being a threat. It's about keep getting goals, keep being in the right place.

"It's still early doors to be looking at the table, we have to just keep picking up three points."

With West Ham enjoying a solid season so far, Abraham was delighted to get three points against David Moyes' side.

The striker was also pleased to be in the right spot as the ball fell at this feet for his two goals.

"West Ham are a great side, they gave been great this year and we had to be patient for the second and third goals," he told Sky Sports.

"The boys said we needed a performance and that's what we did today. As a striker, scoring goals gives you confidence, my team-mates created a lot of chances and we defended well as a team.

"[My goals were] something you do in the park, get in the right areas and be ready when the ball lands."

The Blues have a tough run of fixtures over the holiday period with a trip to Arsenal on Boxing Day before home matches against Aston Villa and Manchester City either side of the New Year.

Trent Alexander-Arnold: What's going on, buddy?

Impressed with his display against the Clarets, the Wanderers’ manager has praised the teenager for his impact

Manager Nuno Espirito Santo has hailed Owen Otasowie’s impact in the wonderkid's full Premier League debut on Monday, despite Wolverhampton Wanderers losing 2-1 defeat to Burnley.

The 19-year-old made his full bow in the English top flight against Sean Dyche’s team – starting in the midfield alongside Nelson Semedo, Joao Moutinho and Rayan Ait-Nouri.

Despite his contributions, the visitors stumbled at Turf Moor, but Espirito Santo still lauded the starlet for his eye-catching performance.

“Owen did well. He’s a good player. He’s strong, he’s physical and he’s very young, but he’s growing, he’s improving a lot of aspects of his game that he still has to learn, but he’s got a lot of talent,” the Wanderers’ boss said after the game as captured by club’s website.

“He had a tough game today, but he handled himself well, and he’s going to be back in the future.”

The tactician born in Sao Tome and Principe also expressed his frustration at his team’s inability to get a result despite having ‘good spells of football’ in the beginning of the match, as their underwhelming run in the Prem continued.

“We started well the game and had good spells of football and we moved the ball well. But we’re disappointed. We were aware Burnley were strong and we could not hold on and be strong enough,” he continued. “We dealt with them pretty well.

"We were able to break the pressure, go out and have spaces, the ball was moving to the front, but then it became more difficult because there wasn’t much space and they made it difficult for combinations.

“The game required dynamic movements and we were passing the ball and staying still, that is why it was difficult.

“We conceded from a situation where we knew Burnley were strong. There are always good things, bad things, but we finished well the game with good character and good attitude, but it’s a tough game.”

After a notable shift, the 19-year-old American-Nigerian who was cautioned in the 45th minute was replaced by Spain international Adama Traore on the hour mark.

With this defeat, the Molineux Stadium giants dropped to 11th in the log having garnered 20 points from 14 games. They host Tottenham Hotspur in their next outing on Sunday, having defeated Chelsea at the weekend.

Iwobi and Gbamin out of Everton’s FA Cup clash against Sheffield Wednesday

A headed goal from Thiago Silva and two strikes from Tammy Abraham were enough to seal the three points.

Frank Lampard felt his Chelsea side showed great character and commitment to bounce back from two defeats on the spin to beat West Ham 3-0.

Chelsea returned to winning ways at Stamford Bridge on Monday following losses to Everton and Wolves.

Thiago Silva’s header gave the Blues the lead on 10 minutes, moments after Ben Chilwell departed on account of an ankle injury.

West Ham caused Chelsea problems for portions of the game, but two quick-fire goals from Tammy Abraham on 78 and 80 minutes secured the three points for Lampard’s side.

Lampard feels the win will be a boost for confidence and believes it was reward for the hard graft his players put in.

“The game was hard,” Lampard told Sky Sports. “We started really well and in the second half where we did not get the ball and stopped playing.

“The sub, [Mateo] Kovacic coming on, got us on the ball a lot better. You are delighted when you get that second and third goal.

“A team like West Ham can hurt you at any moment.

"It wasn’t vintage tonight. I thought there were some good parts; the best part was the character coming off the back of two defeats.”

The win lifts Chelsea up to fifth in the table, six points behind leaders Liverpool, and Lampard expects twists and turns in the months ahead.

“This season is looking different to every other season,” he said. “It is hard at a club with expectations that we have and the squad we have.

"If you are winning, or are unbeaten for a long time, then things move swimmingly well. It is much easier to manage, and you get a few challenges when you lose a couple of games.

“It is hard; I have to be the one that drives it. There was a bit of tension going into the game, in a good way. The players were like that and you have to fight through it.

“When you come off it slightly, there is no easy way back other than a bit of graft. We showed that tonight without being beautiful.

"It will help confidence. As a squad, I thought it would be tough for us as we have to grow a bit of character in games.

“We suffered at Wolves, we should have dealt with that game, and today we dealt with a game that was potentially very tough.”

Timo Werner was denied a goal by the width of the crossbar, as his barren run extended to nine games in all competitions, but Lampard feels the goals will come for the Germany international.

"I am gutted Timo did not get his goal at the end,” Lampard said. "That would have been great for his confidence. He is getting chances so the goals will come.”

Commenting on being fifth heading into Christmas, Lampard said: “It feels okay. I want more. We have to have a desire for more to keep pushing.”
