LIVE: Tottenham vs Leeds

Toby Alderweireld's close-range header is the icing on the cake as Tottenham get back to winning ways in 2021 against a frustrated Leeds. Harry Kane and Son Heung-min help guide Spurs back to the top four; the visitors are left with one of those days. At full-time in the Premier League, it finishes Tottenham 3-0 Leeds United.

90' + 4' FULL-TIME: TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 3-0 LEEDS UNITED

90' + 2' Spurs are going to finish this game a man down though; Doherty crashes into Hernandez and picks up a second yellow, seeing him sent off for a second bookable offence. He'll be suspended too.

90' There are three added minutes incoming at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

88' A concern for Leeds now as Dallas needs treatment after a Moura challenge. Marcelo Bielsa was barking somewhere at his bench. The Argentine can't afford any more injured defenders.

83' Hojbjerg skews a wide effort down one end, as Tottenham incur deep for the first time in a while, and Leeds promptly counter through Phillips and Hernandez, ending in a Bamford finish pushed to Lloris.

81' Raphinha skims a low, if soft effort in now and Lloris is untroubled by it. Leeds have been pushing consistently for a response in the last 10 minutes, to absolutely no avail.

80' Hernandez and Poveda combine without the finish they want on the edge of the Tottenham box. It's a familiar story from Bielsa's tenure; plenty of ball and limited returns in the final third.

74' Hernandez clips a shot in from outside the box and wins a corner. Phillips looks to have headed it over but the referee hands a second set-piece, believing Dier had the last touch. Hernandez shoots again from it - and another deflection hands a third corner.

72' Kane attempts an ambitious finish from inside his own half after catching Meslier off his line and his effort isn't too far off the mark, just sailing a few feet over the crossbar.

70' Poveda wins a corner off Davies after trying to locate Bamford with a cross. Kane heads Phillips' delivery away with nonchalant ease and then helps to clear Leeds' follow-up press.

68' Leeds deal with the set-piece this time and muscle their way back downfield. Dallas miscues a potential volley and Doherty clears Phillips' looming cross. Tottenham are determined to keep a clean sheet here.

66' Half-chances at both ends now as Poveda, Shackleton and Hernandez all combine off the bench, before Kane sees a counter tipped away by Meslier for a corner.

62' Bergwijn and then Winks both have cracks at goal in quick succession, the former seeing his shot parried by Meslier and the latter skying it from distance. Spurs are not putting the cue on the rack.

59' Leeds sustain some skilled pressure for little gain on the Tottenham box now, with the eventual cross from Dallas soaring well over Bamford's head. The visitors are leaving themselves wide open at the back.

57' Son! It should be 4-0 for the hosts, with the Korean bearing down on Meslier - but he unselfishly attempts to cut it back for Hojbjerg and Leeds are able to see it away with a nifty interception.

55' Don't expect Leeds to change despite being three goals down and theoretically buried here. They didn't against Manchester United in a 6-2 defeat - though that was a different kind of game entirely.

52' Kane! Almost a fourth for Tottenham after the England skipper smashes an effort into the side netting on the left edge. In his technical area, Marcelo Bielsa falls out of his usual crouch and recovers with stylish aplomb.

49' Ndombele! Leeds switch off at the back when Spurs take a quick free-kick in midfield and Meslier makes a great stop to deflect the low shot, seeing it trickle around the outside of his left post.

48' Leeds peel back to see off a Spurs counter through Phillips and the England man is then fouled by Doherty as they counter themselves. A quick tap and delivery into the box is seized by Lloris.

47' The visitors pepper a few early balls into the Spurs box and the clearances are less than exemplary. Still, Tottenham weather the early incursion without a serious threat to their goal.

46' We're back underway for the second half at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Will the hosts see this one out for a first win in five or can Leeds find a way to salvage a result?

Need any further proof of the imbalance of this game? Leeds are two goals down with almost twice as much possession. But you write off Marcelo Bielsa at your peril. Jose Mourinho will be satisfied there.

It's the Kane and Son show once more for Tottenham, as they head into the break at home with a healthy lead against Leeds. The former helped them in front with a penalty against the run of play - then supplied his partner with a cool finish close to the interval. Plenty of life in this one yet; at half-time, it is Tottenham 2-0 Leeds.

45' + 1' HALF-TIME: TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 2-0 LEEDS UNITED

45' Davies! The Tottenham defender pushes an effort wide of the post as we enter the one minute of added time here.

41' Harrison! It is the closest Leeds have been so far, as the midfielder bends a powerful shot just over the crossbar by a matter of inches, played into the D by Klich. Excellent from the visitors.

40' Alioski attempts to slam a volley in from the edge of the Tottenham box now and miscues the angle by a particularly spectacular margin. Leeds would like something to show for this first half.

38' Dier proves sharp enough to offset a ball skewed in for Bamford near the edge of Spurs' six-yard area now, the England man getting enough contact to deny the striker a shot on goal.

36' Concerns for Tottenham here; Kane is on his haunches clutching his knee and Son is perched on the turf, looking particularly ginger. A loss of either would be a blow but they seem fine to continue.

35' Bergwijn! Leeds leave their underbelly open as Davies brings a soaring long cross to earth on the left and cuts it back for his teammate - who promptly skies a finish into orbit from eight yards out.

34' Rodrigo! Klich plays the lovely flick and the Spaniard tries to pull his shot around Dier. He does so, but in the process squeezes himself out and Lloris has an easy save.

33' A close mix-up at the back from Tottenham sees Davies almost take Lloris' head off as he hurriedly clears a delivery that Bamford was eyeing up hungrily. A half-chance for Leeds.

31' A free-kick falls for Spurs on the right edge and the hosts have a clutch of chances, with Hojbjerg, Alderweireld and Kane all honing in on half-chances before the latter puts it out for a goal-kick.

30' There's nothing to be said other than frustration for Leeds there. They've imposed themselves on this game far more than their hosts have today but they haven't found an early blow of their own.

28' Penalty to Tottenham! It's Alioski, who has had such a sharp game so far, who brings down Bergwijn with leg contact on the edge of the box after Meslier plays out a ropey delivery.

26' Phillips teases Dallas forward on the right but the latter's square delivery is cleared by Hojbjerg. Leeds had seven players in that Tottenham penalty area as that ball came in.

25' Kane carves his way into the Leeds box, holds off Dallas and gets two bites of the cherry before Alioski blasts away his cut-back. Still no goals to show in this game with a quarter gone.

24' This is Tottenham's 26th match of the season, compared to Leeds' 18th. Such a gulf may not tell today but it surely will throughout the rest of the season.

22' Bamford! A potential gilt-edged chance for the striker who climbs over Alderweireld and blasts a header looping over the crossbar. The former is facing his old Chelsea boss in Mourinho today.

21' Better from Tottenham; while Son's delivery beats all, Kane wrestles it back before it can skip out and tees up Hojbjerg for a neat effort, albeit one drilled straight to Meslier.

20' Rodrigo can be a little susceptible to tracking back defensively and so it tells now as he concedes a soft foul for a push on Hojbjerg on the left flank, in line with Leeds' penalty area.

18' There are some wayward deliveries at the back from Leeds as they try to play out today, and a few have been filched by Spurs all too easily. It's all part of the Marcelo Bielsa package though.

17' Raphinha trips Davies out on the Tottenham man's left flank and Son has the chance to loft a set-piece delivery into the box. Leeds fail to clear and Kane ultimately smashes a finish over the bar.

15' Ndombele threads a delicious throughball for Bergwijn that Meslier does exceptionally well to poach on the edge of his box in time. Tottenham are growing in confidence after a quarter-hour.

13' Leeds are throwing fabulous breaks around like cut-price raffle tickets. Rodrigo and Bamford combine with a sweeping cross and a cut-back, and the latter's finish is a soft tap to Lloris.

12' Tottenham piece together their most dangerous move of the game now, a one-two with Bergwijn and Son that sees Leeds muscle the final ball out for a corner, which Meslier claims comfortably.

10' Harrison again is at the heart of a length-of-the-field counter propelled by Alioski and Doherty does enough to ensure that a cut-back volley to Klich is sprayed over the bar under pressure.

9' Rodrigo sweeps the ball out to Harrison on the left and the Manchester City loanee glances a cross back into the box that Raphinha and Bamford both get very close.

8' It's a crisp, cold January afternoon in north London today - hello 2021! - as Bamford is flagged offside heading down the right flank. Winter is in the air, if not quite on the ground.

6' Much is often made of Leeds' fluency in attack but it is arguable that their flexibility sometimes goes under-reported. They're missing some key bodies today but have found curious stopgaps.

4' Alioski! Leeds illustrate their transitional place early on, with Klich feeding the North Macedonia international in on the left edge of the box, where he wrestles a shot into the near-side netting.

3' This has the makings of a entertaining clash on paper. Mourinho and Bielsa are arguably the two most idiosyncratic tacticians in the Premier League and - if on song - they could serve up a storm.

1' We are underway in this Premier League clash between Tottenham and Leeds United!

The teams have emerged at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and we're moments away from kick-off. David Coote is today's referee.

It's just under eight years since these two sides last met, when Leeds delivered a 2-1 upset in the FA Cup fourth round thanks to goals from Ross McCormack and Luke Varney. There's no matchday survivors, though Bale did start back then for Spurs.

That hectic campaign so far means Gareth Bale is conspicuously absent for the Whites' visit. The Wales international is not the only countryman AWOL however; Leeds are lacking his occasional strike partner Tyler Roberts too.

That pandemic-enforced postponement with Fulham is the last thing Tottenham need in a jam-packed schedule. They have an EFL Cup semi-final with Brentford looming, plus FA Cup and Europa League commitments. They're pretty much wall-to-wall right now.

Subs: Ian Poveda, Kiko Casilla, Helder Costa, Pablo Hernandez, Charlie Cresswell, Jamie Shackleton, Jack Jenkins, Oliver Casey, Niall Huggins.

LEEDS UNITED (4-1-4-1): Illan Meslier; Stuart Dallas, Luke Ayling, Pascal Struijk, Ezgjan Alioski; Kalvin Phillips; Raphinha, Rodrigo, Mateusz Klich, Jack Harrison; Patrick Bamford.

Subs: Sergio Reguilon, Joe Hart, Joe Rodon, Moussa Sissoko, Dele Alli, Japhet Tanganga, Lucas Moura, Gedson Fernandes, Carlos Vinicius.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR (4-2-3-1): Hugo Lloris; Matt Doherty, Toby Alderweireld, Eric Dier, Ben Davies; Harry Winks, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg; Steven Bergwijn, Tanguy Ndombele, Son Heung-min; Harry Kane.

Toby Alderweireld and Steven Bergwijn are the two new faces for the hosts following their draw with Wolves last time out. Unsurprisingly, the visitors make no change after robustly hammering West Brom.

But it has been a week of difficult off-field fortunes for both. Spurs were left in the lurch at short notice thanks to Fulham's last-hour Covid-19 cancellation and Leeds have been under fire for triggering a social media storm. They'll want to do their talking on the pitch today.

Marcelo Bielsa's Whites have emerged as the neutral's favourite this term for their all-or-nothing approach to games - and three wins in their last four has set them well on their way to avoiding a possible relegation battle.

Early pacesetters across the first quarter of the campaign, Jose Mourinho's Spurs have ground to a shuddering halt, with two points taken from their last possible 12. Today is a must-win for their silverware hopes.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the 2020-21 Premier League season as Tottenham look to reignite their spluttering title tilt against Leeds United at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

‘Manchester City will win Premier League' – Yakubu Ayegbeni predicts Citizens success

The two sides will meet for the first time after the initial game was voided after Kasasiro Boys’ camp was hit by Covid-19 positive cases

AS Kigali head coach Eric Nshimiyimana has named his travelling party to face Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA FC) for their Caf Confederation Cup encounter.

The second leg of the first-round game will be held at St Mary's Stadium, Kitende on January 6 as the Rwandan side enjoy a 2-0 advantage which they earned without kicking a ball.

KCCA failed to raise a minimum number of players for the match after 12 of their squad members tested positive for the coronavirus.

Nshimiyimana, who has coached AS Kigali in the last six seasons, led them to this stage of the competition after seeing off Orapa United in the preliminary round.

The Rwandan giants lost 2-1 in Botswana before they picked up a decisive 1-0 victory at home. They had played just one game in the Premier League against Mukura Victory, which they won 2-0, before the competition was suspended by the government on December 12.

The Rwandan state took the move to suspend the competition due to the rising number of coronavirus positive cases within the football family. AS Kigali will be facing KCCA after they were knocked out by Proline FC in last season's competition.

KCCA will host AS Kigali at Vipers SC’s home ground and not at their own turf located in Lugogo.

“After an inspection of stadiums in Uganda, Caf notified KCCA that Omondi Stadium, in Lugogo was not eligible to host this edition’s Caf games,” KCCA announced on Saturday.

“Caf accredited St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende and deemed it fit to host Caf games. KCCA then hired St Mary’s Stadium Kitende for the return leg game against AS Kigali that will be played on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at 16:00 EAT.

“Late 2020, KCCA Stadium plans were approved by authorities and the club hopes to start construction of a modern, start of the art stadium early 2021.”

AS Kigali’s squad:

Eric Nsabimana, Rachidi Kalisa, Tumaini Ntamuhanga, Shaban Hussein Tshabalala, Muhadjiri Hakizimana, Aboubakar Lawal, Fiston Nkinzingabo, Janvier Benedata, Latif Bishiri, Pierrot Kwizera, Abeddy Biramahire, Alex Ortamal, Mossi Rurangwa, Chris Rugero, Bosco Kayitaba, Felix Ndekwe, Eric Ndayishimiye, Sudi Abdallah, Bate Shamiru, Hassan Rugirayabo, Christian Ishimwe, Hassan Karera, Emery Bayisenge.

Mikel in contention for Bournemouth clash – Stoke City boss O'Neill

The former Super Eagles midfielder is set to make his second appearance for the Potters since recovering from a calf injury

Stoke City manager Michael O'Neill has confirmed John Obi Mikel is in contention for their Championship clash against Bournemouth on Saturday night.

The former Nigeria international suffered a calf injury in Stoke’s draw against Sheffield Wednesday on November 28.

The midfielder subsequently missed his side’s next eight games before returning to action against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, where he made a cameo appearance.

O'Neill revealed the 33-year-old midfielder will be available for selection when they take on the Cherries at Bet365 Stadium.

“John Obi Mikel and Sam Clucas came off the bench on Tuesday so they will come back into contention,” O'Neill told the club website.

“It’s just a case of how many minutes and where they are physically in terms of being ready to return.”

Mikel teamed up with the Potters in the summer after parting ways with Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor on mutual agreement.

The midfielder has been delivering fine performances for Stoke City since his arrival, featuring in 16 games across all competitions and bagging an assist.

The 33-year-old has captained the Bet365 Stadium outfit a number of times this season and has helped them secure impressive results.

His consistent showings helped Stoke to their current seventh spot on the league table after gathering 35 points from 22 games.

The former Super Eagles captain made his name during his time with Premier League giants Chelsea, where he spent 11 years.

Mikel helped the Blues to win a number of trophies including the Champions League, Europa League, Premier League and FA Cup.

The midfielder has also featured for Chinese side Tianjin TEDA and Championship club Middlesbrough since leaving Chelsea.

Mikel has previously spoken of his intention to help Stoke return to the Premier League at the end of the current campaign.

Caf Champions League: Why Simba SC stand great chance to beat FC Platinum – Manula

The Taifa Stars custodian remains positive they still have a good chance to progress despite losing the first leg away

Simba SC custodian Aishi Manula is confident they will progress to the next stage of the Caf Champions League at the expense of FC Platinum.

In the first meeting between the two sides, the Platinum Miners picked up a vital win after Perfect Chikwende scored the all-important goal in the 17th minute to give his side a slight advantage at the National Sports Stadium in Harare.

Despite trailing against the Zimbabwean champions, the Taifa Stars custodian is confident the result is reversible and it will not be an obstacle for them to qualify when the two sides clash at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Wednesday, January 6.

“First of all, I know everyone knows we are trailing 1-0 so far, but obviously we still have a great chance of qualifying for the group stage by making sure we win our rematch which we will play at home here in Dar es Salaam,” Manula said as quoted by Sokalabongo.

“I believe the good results in our last two games have boosted our morale to win the game, and through the support of our fans and football stakeholders in the country we will qualify and go to the group stage.”

In a previous interview, Simba coach Sven Vandenbroeck said he was gutted to lose the away game but remained confident they can still turn the tables during the return leg meeting.

“I’m not happy with the results because we didn’t deserve to lose, we dominated the game especially in the first half but we didn’t have focus whilst attacking,” Vandenbroeck told the club’s social media pages after the game.

“They managed to score and now we have to be careful when we meet in the return leg.”

The 21-time champions came into the match hoping to get at least a draw and stand a good chance of winning the second leg at home, having qualified for the second round after a 1-0 aggregate win over Plateau United of Nigeria.

On the other hand, Platinum made it to the next round after a 4-1 aggregate win after eliminating Costa De Sol of Mozambique, winning the first leg played in Maputo 2-1 before claiming a 2-0 win in the return leg played in Harare.

On Wednesday, Simba sent a warning to Platinum after demolishing Ihefu FC 4-0 in a one-sided Mainland Premier League contest, with the goals coming from Mohamed Hussein, Meddie Kagere (two), and Chris Mugalu.

Last season, Simba failed to make it past the preliminary stage after losing on the away goal rule to UD Songo of Mozambique. The two sides had battled to a 0-0 draw in Mozambique and in the return leg played in Dar es Salaam, it ended 1-1 meaning Songo advanced on the away goal rule.

Planning to fail again: Gor Mahia boycott training ahead of CR Belouizdad date

The Kenyan champions suffered a 6-0 loss in the first leg played in Algeria and their preparations for the second leg have hit a snag

Gor Mahia players have once again threatened to boycott the second leg of their second preliminary round of the Caf Champions League game against CR Belouizdad if their dues are not settled.

The Kenyan champions are scheduled to host the Algerian giants on Wednesday, January 6 at Nyayo Stadium. However, things are not well at K'Ogalo and senior players have opted to stay away from training ahead of the game.

"The situation is not good at all, players have opted to stay at home in protest for their money," a senior source at the club told Goal.

"On Saturday, players were to report in training but a few fringe ones turned up. Remember, also current caretaker coach [Patrick] Odhiambo is also in his rural home with the family.

"If nothing is done, I doubt whether the Wednesday game will be played, or even if it will be played, results might be worse or close to the 6-0 loss suffered in the first leg."

Goal was unable to get an official club comment from chairman Ambrose Rachier, who is currently out of Nairobi.

In the first leg, the Great Chabab scored their goals through Amir Sayoud, who scored a hat-trick, Hamza Bellahouel, Larbi Tabti, and Maecky Ngombo during a thoroughly one-sided display at the Stade du 5 Juillet 1962 on Saturday, December 26.

Despite struggling away, Sammy Omollo, who came in as a stand-in coach for the Kenyan champions, explained why K'Ogalo players deserve respect notwithstanding the humiliating loss.

"If it was any other team, believe me, they could have suffered more goals," Omollo told Goal.

"These players are very strong; they came into the match and struggled to get into the match. They had not trained at all and were really under difficult circumstances coming into the game.

"They gave their best against a very good and organised team and their fight on the pitch was evident. They deserve respect."

Meanwhile, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) released the fixtures which will resume the Premier League in the New Year. Gor Mahia's game against AFC Leopards in the derby is the only affected match.

According to the new list of fixtures obtained by Goal, the Mashemeji derby, which was due to be played on January 3 at Nyayo Stadium, has been postponed but no new date was given for the clash.

Chelsea attracting interest from at least 10 potential buyers

The Hammers vice-chairman has dismissed claims Premier League clubs have considered the idea

Reports that Premier League clubs discussed pausing the season because of a rise in coronavirus cases are “complete nonsense”, says West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady.

The UK government has imposed tighter restrictions on public life in an attempt to curb a surge in Covid-19 cases, driven by a new, more infectious variant of the virus.

The Premier League already has strict health and safety measures in place but that has not been able to prevent an increase in positive cases at clubs, with three matches having to be called off last month.

Aston Villa’s trip to Newcastle was postponed at the start of December before Everton versus Manchester City and Fulham against Tottenham were called off at short notice last week.

With teams playing so many matches within a short space of time there are fears the virus could spread rapidly between clubs, sparking rumours in the media that a possible ‘circuit breaker’ - pausing the season for a few weeks in order to bring the virus back under control - could be introduced.

The Premier League has already said it has no plans to pause the season and Brady insists no such proposal has ever been discussed.

"I was confused this week when I read that Premier League clubs were considering a two-week 'circuit breaker' in the season over fears of Covid-19 outbreaks causing chaos,” she wrote in the Sun.

“It was complete nonsense. It has never been discussed or been raised by any club in any of our multiple Premier League meetings and there are no plans to discuss it.

“Our fixture list is already congested and our priority is to finish the season as long as it is safe to do so. And we all think it is safe to do so.

“All clubs have excellent Covid-19 protocols which allow us play our games behind-closed-doors — and our protocols continue to have the full backing of government.

“Some fixtures have been postponed but this is mainly due to the fact that Public Health England are closing down training grounds, which means that while clubs still have the required 14 players to complete the fixture, they have nowhere to meet, train and prepare for the fixture.

“And that’s simply unfair and wrong so, quite rightly, the Premier League have suspended the game, a decision I fully support.”

Brady also dismissed suggestions that Premier League clubs who have rejected the return of the five substitutes rule are putting players’ welfare at risk.

Five substitutes were allowed during the summer restart but a proposal to reintroduce it this campaign has been voted down three times.

That has frustrated a number of Premier League managers, including Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who feels it is putting an unfair burden in players.

West Ham are reportedly one of the clubs who voted against the proposal - but Brady denies it is putting the players' health at risk.

“Those against changing the rules midway through a season were not unconcerned about player welfare, which has been suggested, rather unkindly, and every club who voted against took grave exception to the accusation,” she added.

“Our players are our most important concern, their welfare is our absolute priority. Which is why we voted in favour of increasing seven named subs on the bench to nine named subs.

“The number was moved to five as an emergency measure when spectator-less football was introduced after the lockdown and no one knew where the pandemic was going. Then an accident of nature became a green flag to permanence.

“Some clubs then wanted half a platoon of subs which most suspected was to further the advantages of a large and highly proficient playing staff.”

Kaide Gordon signs professional Liverpool contract

The Pope recalled his memories of hearing Argentina win the 1986 World Cup final against West Germany while he was studying in Frankfurt

The late Diego Maradona was a man beloved by his fellow Argentines – and Pope Francis is seemingly no exception.

The Pope recalled his own memories of the 1986 World Cup final, when Argentina beat West Germany while he was studying in Frankfurt.

He told the Gazzetta dello Sport: "I met Diego Armando Maradona during a Match for Peace in 2014: I remember with pleasure everything that Diego did for Scholas Occurrentes, the foundation that takes care of the needy all over the world.

“On the pitch he was a poet, a great champion who gave joy to millions of people, in Argentina as in Naples. He was also a very fragile man.

“I have a personal memory linked to the 1986 World Cup, the one that Argentina won thanks to Maradona. I was in Frankfurt; it was a difficult time for me, I was studying the language and collecting material for my thesis.

“I hadn't been able to see the World Cup final and I only learned the next day of Argentina's victory over Germany, when a Japanese boy wrote 'Viva l'Argentina' on the blackboard during a German lesson.

“I remember it, personally, as the victory of loneliness because I had no one with whom to share the joy of that sporting victory: loneliness makes you feel alone, while what makes joy beautiful is being able to share it.

“When I was told of Maradona's death, I prayed for him and sent the family a rosary with a few personal words of comfort.”

Pope Francis also spoke about his own love of football, from playing with a ball of rags on the streets of Buenos Aires as a child.

"I have a memory, that of the ball of rags, the pelota de trapo: leather was expensive and we were poor, rubber was not yet so common, but it was enough for us - a ball of rags to have fun and almost perform miracles playing in the square near home.

“I was not among the best! Indeed, I was what in Argentina they call a "pata dura", literally ‘hard leg’. That's why they always had me playing in goal.

“But being a goalkeeper was a great school for me. The goalkeeper must be ready to respond to dangers that can come from all sides.”

Ten Hag willing to risk Casemiro, Fernandes bans

Batoto ba Mungu will visit the Brewers under a new coach as they were forced to make changes after a poor start to the season

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League side Sofapaka will welcome defender Michael Bodo for Sunday's league clash against Tusker.

Bodo, according to the club, is fully fit for the match that will be held at Moi International Sports Complex, Kasararani. Sofapaka will be under a new coach, Ken Okoth, who was appointed in order to fill the place that was left by John Baraza.

“Defender Bodo has fully recovered from a nagging thigh injury and should be in contention for Sunday’s match,” the club announced on Saturday.

As Odhiambo, who has already begun training sessions with Batoto ba Mungu, readies to take charge of his first game, he will be forced to do so without Isaac Mitima, who is suffering from a knee injury, Stephen Okola, who will is ruled out by an ankle problem, and midfielder David Simiyu, who is yet to recover from a foot injury.

“Rwandan centre-back Isaac Mitima will yet again miss Tusker clash. The defender, however, has resumed light training and should be fully fit in a week’s time,” Sofapaka added.

“Defender Okola will miss the third match of the season due to an ankle injury. We will miss the services of Simiyu who sustained a foot injury in training.”

When he joined, Odhiambo outlined his ambitions and said he believes the players will help him a great deal in chasing those targets.

“This a big club and the ambitions are so clear that when the president [Elly Kalekwa] talked to me I felt it was a good opportunity to join the club and help achieve their targets,” the former Bandari head coach said.

“The club has a good set of players who are very talented, skilful and of good quality. I believe they are capable of achieving a lot. When the president reached out to me, his desires were so clear for the club and that is winning the title.

“This is what made it easier for me to decide on joining the club.”

Odhiambo came back to serve a club he helped gain promotion in 2008 and won the league as a player in 2009.

Premier League clubs agree to enhance security measures for 2022/23 season

The Nigeria international has teamed up with the rest of the Hornets in training, having been on the sidelines for more than six months

Watford manager Xisco Munoz has expressed his satisfaction with the progress Isaac Success is making to return to action.

The centre-forward has been on the sidelines since June after suffering a hamstring injury during a training session.

The Nigeria international has now teamed up with the rest of the Hornets in training ahead of their Championship clash against Swansea City on Saturday.

Munoz revealed the 24-year-old’s return will be gradual as he needed more time to fully recover from his injury.

“He has started training with us, step by step. He needs time but I’m very happy with him because in the last training he was at a good level,” Munoz told the club website.

“But it’s step by step when a player has come in after an injury, so we will see when he’s coming back.”

Success has struggled to establish himself at Vicarage Road since joining the side from Spanish side Granada in 2016 due to his inconsistent form and injury problems.

The Super Eagles forward has only found the back of the net seven times in 49 league appearances for Watford since his arrival at the club.

He has, however, revealed his readiness to improve on his performances for the second tier outfit when he returns from injury.

“It's been tough. It was painful, but it's football and it happens. I'm just trying to work my way back to the squad as I've missed playing with the team,” Success said.

“We need to get back to the Premier League as quickly as possible, so I'm looking forward to getting back and achieving our goals.

“I'm very excited. The last five months have been boring. I've done a lot of work and I know it's going to be an emotional first game back after six months out, but I'm ready for the challenge.

“Sometimes I feel disappointed with myself as I've got the qualities and everything a forward player will need.

“I need to do the right things and wait for my chance. I think I've got lots to offer the team. It's been disappointing not getting the chance [over the years] and being injured a couple of times when it was time for me to explode.

“I just need to keep working as there is so much more to come. It's time for me to deliver for the team and the fans as they have been waiting too long. The wait is now over.”

Watford are fifth on the Championship table after gathering 37 points from 21 games and will hope to secure all three points against Swansea to brighten their hopes of returning to the Premier League at the end of the season.

Tottenham 1-0 Burnley: Player ratings as Spurs move into top four

The forward came on later as the Cranes fought to register a 1-1 draw against the former African champions

Uganda striker Muhammad Shaban has stated they learnt a lot from their pre-African Nations Championship engagement against Cameroon on Friday.

The Cranes and the Indomitable Lions played to a 1-1 draw and the Vipers SC forward has said they have learned a number of lessons despite going down to 10 men in the first half.

“We have learnt a lot from this match,” Shaban, who came on for Milton Karisa, said after the game according to Fufa’s website.

“Having played with 10 players for almost the whole game, we are happy with the result. We shall improve in our next game.”

Shaban’s coach Johnathan McKinstry said their main agenda for the pre-Chan tournament was not all about results.

To the former Rwanda coach, the main reason for engaging in the competition was to get the players ready for the actual tournament.

“We said coming into this tournament was not about results,” McKinstry told the Fufa portal too.

“It was about taking on the host nation and other top opposition. We wanted to come here and prepare for the main tournament.  We encouraged our players to be confident even when we lost one of them.

“We created chances even with a man less but the equaliser was well deserved.”

In a separate interview, McKinstry said he was happy in how the players faced the Indomitable Lions but there are areas they have to work on.

“It was great for the fitness of the players and the tactical development of the players and also important for growing the confidence of the players,” added the tactician.

“And for large parts of the game we were the team creating chances from open play and we couldn’t be more pleased with the players.

“There are things to be improved naturally, but we felt that we played good football. We know we have speed in the team and on the bench.”

Uganda are among the three nations that organised a pre-Chan mini-competition in Cameroon as a precursor to the continental tournament.

They will play Niger and Zambia in the remaining fixtures but Ben Ocen will not feature after he was red-carded for a bad challenge in the game against Cameroon.

Coman admits Bayern Munich team-mates tease him because he's scared of heading the ball

The 24-year-old scored the winner in the Champions League final with his head but it isn't a skill that comes to him naturally

Kingsley Coman has revealed his Bayern Munich team-mates tease him because he is afraid of heading the ball.

The 24-year-old – who won the Champions League final with a strong header in August – admitted he has to shut his eyes when going up to strike the ball.

"It's just the way it is that I get a bit frightened of heading the ball, and my team-mates make fun of me over it," Coman told Bild.

"You can see it in the pictures. I closed my eyes for the header. It's instinctive - a natural reflex. I always try to keep my eyes open, but at the last moment I always have this reflex."

His crucial effort against Paris Saint-Germain aside, Coman has never been the most prolific wide player.

His tally of 10 goals in 2018-19 was the only time he has reached double figures in a season but, with five to his name this campaign, it is a benchmark that he is on course to match.

Coman once admitted he was never likely to be a 'killer' in front of goal, though it is an area of his game he would surely like to improve.

“I’ve had to be more present in front of goal and I’m creating more chances,” he told Le Parisien in 2019.

“I don’t think I’ll ever be someone to score 30, 40 or 50 goals in a season. This instinct to be a killer in front of goal, it’s not natural to me, even if I work for it.

“I love creating goals. But I know that scoring is very important. So I’m strict with myself and I try to be more egotistical.”

Coman and Bayern return to Bundesliga action on Sunday following a brief winter break.

They closed out a historic year with a 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen on December 19, overtaking Peter Bosz’s side to finish 2020 in their customary spot at the top of the table.

Bayern have six league fixtures to negotiate in January, starting at home to second-bottom Mainz, with a DFB-Pokal fixture against second-tier Holstein Kiel also on the schedule.

Arteta offers update on Willock's future at Arsenal as Newcastle wait in the wings

The former Valencia coach shared an update on the status of midfielder Javier Hernandez’s recovery…

Roy Krishna hasn’t scored a goal in the last three Indian Super League (ISL) matches however, coach Antonio Habas isn’t a worried man. The Fiji international scored five goals in as many matches but hasn’t found the back of the net since their 1-0 win over FC Goa where Krishna converted from the spot.

In fact, his last goal from open play, where he was offside by some distance, was against Jamshedpur FC on December 7, 2020.

“I have to analyse the performance of the whole team and not just Roy Krishna in the last matches. The team's behaviour and performance is 100 per cent. Roy Krishna can score goals but more important is their attitude and overall performance,” said Habas.

The ATK Mohun Bagan coach was questioned on the reason as to why his strikers have been guilty of being wasteful this season. He answered by stating that he would be concerned if his team weren’t creating goalscoring opportunities.

“I would have been worried if didn't create chances to score but in football, you can do something in one situation and cannot do that in another. In football, all situations are different during the 90 minutes,” he said.

Javier Hernandez, who scored two goals in the ISL final last year, has been missing in action due to an injury. The 31-year-old hasn’t recovered completely from his injury yet as Habas and his medical staff are in no hurry to bring him back until then.

“He was well but just before the match (Chennaiyin) he had some problem, and we preferred not to force the player,” said the former Bolivia national team coach.

Habas maintained that it is vital for his side to continue their progress in the same vein and assimilate as many points as possible in the league stage.

“Being top of the table is good confidence for the team but at the same time, it is also a big responsibility for us to continue the performance and remain at the top of the table. Our team is preparing for that,” he signed off.

AC Milan vs Inter: Picking a combined XI of Derby Di Milano legends

If the Downs front trio is fielded they could prove to be a handful for the Buccaneers and emerge as the Brazilians’ trump card in this big fixture

Mamelodi Sundowns forward Kermit Erasmus has underlined that Saturday’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) clash against Orlando Pirates at Loftus Versfeld “is all about the team” and not just his attacking partnership with Themba Zwane and Peter Shalulile.

The three have managed 13 of Sundowns' 16 goals in eight league matches so far this season and Erasmus says selflessness has been key in building their feared partnership.

While Erasmus and Zwane have been doubtful for this match, there have been, however, chances that the they could play to complete an attacking combination that has been terrorising PSL defences.

“We complement each other on the field of play and we always try to find space and look for one another and not be selfish in front of the goals,” Erasmus told the Sundowns website.

“We know it is all about the team, it’s the team before the individual. If the team wins we are happy and we have shown no selfishness amongst each other and it has been good for the team and us.”

Zwane headlines this combination with seven goals and an assist, Shalulile has chipped in with four strikes and two assists while Erasmus has contributed two goals and three direct goal feeds.

The Buccaneers’ defenders could be in for a torrid afternoon if the three are fielded and continue with their fine form.

But Erasmus says that it will not be an easy game as he comes up against his former team Pirates in this big fixture that opens 2021.

“Pirates are a very attacking and ball-playing team, they use their width properly,” said Erasmus.

“It will be a difficult game but if we stick to the plan we are working on anything can happen and we have been creating chances and we just need to convert them. It will be an entertaining game for the people to watch.”

Log leaders Sundowns are five points better off than fifth-placed Pirates who, however, have a game in hand.

A win for the Soweto giants will fire them up to just two points of the league leaders.

Sources: Kane not at training, pushing City move

The Dockers will have to wait for a few days more before unveiling their new coach for the 2020-21 campaign

FKF Premier League side Bandari will have to wait for at least two more days before unveiling their new coach Andre Casa Mbungo.

Goal exclusively reported on Friday the former AFC Leopards tactician was heading to handle the Coastal-based side after agreeing on contractual terms.

The Rwandan tactician, who has already resigned as the coach of Gicogi United so as to take over at Bandari, will not arrive as planned after the delay in getting his Covid-19 results done in Kigali on Friday.

“Mbungo will not arrive as planned in Mombasa because Rwanda have strict Covid-19 regulations which he has to undergo before boarding the plane to Kenya,” a source privy to the transfer move, and who did not want to be named, told Goal on Saturday.

“He took his Covid-19 test on Friday and he is still waiting for the certificate and results and it means he can only arrive on Sunday or Monday meaning the unveiling cannot be done as planned.

“He will also not be able to watch the team in action against Western Stima.”

A source told Goal on Mbungo’s return to Kenyan football: “An agreement has been reached between the club and coach [Mbungo]. He will travel from Rwanda today [Friday] and will be unveiled on Saturday, of course, after signing the papers.”

Bandari will be the second Kenyan club Mbungo will be coaching after a short stint at AFC Leopards. The experienced coach quit Ingwe in December 2019 after going for months without pay.

He went on to work briefly for Gasogi United before Rayon Sports convinced him to join them.

At the Dockers, Mbungo will be assisted by Patrick Odhiambo. The former Sony Sugar coach is currently at Gor Mahia acting as an interim coach after the exit of Brazilian coach Roberto Oliveira.

Former Bandari coach Ken Odhiambo has already been unveiled by Sofapaka in the top-flight.

Bandari started their league campaign with a 1-0 win over Sofapaka FC. They drew 0-0 with Tusker FC in their second game before falling 2-0 to Nairobi City Stars.

Another 2-1 defeat came at home against league leaders KCB before settling for a 1-1 draw with Posta Rangers.
