Hunt left Kaizer Chiefs 'in a better place' than he found them

Top teams from the Premier League, Serie A and La Liga have formed a breakaway league of their own

Football enthusiasts have taken to social media to question the creation of the European Super League by the top clubs in England, Italy and Spain.

The idea of the European Super League first broke out in 2018, but Fifa responded with threats to sanction any player or club involved in the breakaway competition.

However, rumours about the new competition gained momentum on Sunday after Uefa, Premier League, Serie A, European Club Association and other football governing bodies issued statements to condemn the creation.

Late on Sunday night, Liverpool confirmed they have joined the competition alongside AC Milan, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur

In reacting to the news, fans in Africa stated the Super League will undermine the competitiveness of the Champions League while some see it as a way of seeing their club compete with the best teams in the world.

12 leading clubs confirm formation and format for breakaway Super League

A dozen clubs, including the Premier League's six leading sides, have indicated their intention to form a new league

A group of Europe's 12 biggest clubs has confirmed their plans to launch a European Super League.

Reports had broken on Sunday of their plans, which have been met by a spectacular backlash from much of the footballing world.

Now it has been confirmed that a handful of teams, including Premier League sides Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool, are planning a rogue competition.

What have they said?

A statement released late on Sunday said: "Twelve of Europe’s leading football clubs have today come together to announce they have agreed to establish a new mid-week competition, the Super League, governed by its Founding Clubs.

"AC Milan, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur have all joined as founding clubs. It is anticipated that a further three clubs will join ahead of the inaugural season, which is intended to commence as soon as practicable.

"Going forward, the Founding Clubs look forward to holding discussions with UEFA and FIFA to work together in partnership to deliver the best outcomes for the new League and for football as a whole.

"The formation of the Super League comes at a time when the global pandemic has accelerated the instability in the existing European football economic model. Further, for a number of years, the Founding Clubs have had the objective of improving the quality and intensity of existing European competitions throughout each season, and of creating a format for top clubs and players to compete on a regular basis.

"The pandemic has shown that a strategic vision and a sustainable commercial approach are required to enhance value and support for the benefit of the entire European football pyramid. In recent months extensive dialogue has taken place with football stakeholders regarding the future format of European competitions. The Founding Clubs believe the solutions proposed following these talks do not solve fundamental issues, including the need to provide higher-quality matches and additional financial resources for the overall football pyramid."

Who are the powerbrokers?

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has been confirmed as the president on the new league.

“We will help football at every level and take it to its rightful place in the world. Football is the only global sport in the world with more than four billion fans and our responsibility as big clubs is to respond to their desires,” he claimed.

Juventus president Andrea Agnelli is the vice president of the Super League. With Sunday's announcement, Agnelli has resigned as president of the ECA.

He added: “Our 12 Founder clubs represent billions of fans across the globe and 99 European trophies. We have come together at this critical moment, enabling European competition to be transformed, putting the game we love on a sustainable footing for the long-term future, substantially increasing solidarity, and giving fans and amateur players a regular flow of headline fixtures that will feed their passion for the game while providing them with engaging role models.”

What will the format be?

According to the statement the competition will work thus:

"20 participating clubs with 15 Founding Clubs and a qualifying mechanism for a further five teams to qualify annually based on achievements in the prior season.

"Midweek fixtures with all participating clubs continuing to compete in their respective national leagues, preserving the traditional domestic match calendar which remains at the heart of the club game.

"An August start with clubs participating in two groups of ten, playing home and away fixtures, with the top three in each group automatically qualifying for the quarter-finals. Teams finishing fourth and fifth will then compete in a two-legged play-off for the remaining quarter-final positions. A two-leg knockout format will be used to reach the final at the end of May, which will be staged as a single fixture at a neutral venue."

Iheanacho closes in on Ighalo record as Africans dominate Wembley with goals

The Super Eagles striker scored the only goal which secured the Foxes' progress to the cup final since 1969

Kelechi Iheanacho scored his 15th goal of the season as Leicester City defeated Southampton 1-0 in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday.

The 24-year-old forward separated both teams at the Wembley Stadium with his 55th-minute strike.

Since his FA Cup debut in January 2016, Iheanacho has scored 14 goals in 19 games - more than any other player in the competition.

His record of 15 goals so far this season puts him two goals behind former Watford star Odion Ighalo who scored 17 goals in all competitions in the 2015-16 campaign.

The second-half strike also made the Nigeria international the latest African star to score at Wembley in a FA Cup game after Morocco's Hakim Ziyech scored Chelsea's only goal against Manchester City on Saturday and Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang grabbed a brace in last season's final against the Blues.

A month ago, Iheanacho broke Didier Drogba's record of 12 goals in the FA Cup and he became the highest scoring African in the competition after his brace in Leicester City’s 3-1 triumph over Manchester United.

So far in his 31 appearances this season, the former Manchester City forward has scored eight goals in the Premier League, four FA Cup goals and four Uefa Europa League goals.

Iheanacho played the entire duration alongside his compatriot Wilfred Ndidi and Ghana's Daniel Amartey was an unused substitute. Meanwhile, Mali's Moussa Djenepo saw 73 minutes of action for Southampton.

The victory secured Leicester City's first FA Cup final berth since 1969 and they will be looking to win the oldest cup competition in the world in their club's history when they battle Chelsea on May 15.

Sunday's result also ended the Foxes' run of back-to-back defeats and they will aim to build on their FA Cup triumph when they host West Bromwich Albion at the King Power Stadium for a Premier League fixture on Thursday.

Leicester City are third in the Premier League table with 56 point after 31 games, and they trail second-placed Manchester United by 10 points even though they have an outstanding match.

Chukwueze ends 17-game La Liga goal drought with brace in Villarreal win over Levante

The 21-year-old returned to the scoresheet in style as Unai Emery's side bounce back to winning ways in the Spanish top-flight

Samuel Chukwueze has ended his 17-game goal drought in La Liga with a brace in Villarreal's 5-1 hammering of Levante on Sunday.

It was the first time the Nigeria international scored a goal since December 3 against Sivasspor in the Uefa Europa League and against Real Valladolid in a league match on November 2.

Chukwueze stretched the visitors' lead at the Estadio Ciudad de Valencia in the 63rd minute to make it 3-1 after Gerard Moreno's first-half strike and Postigo's own goal in the ninth minute.

Nine minutes after his first goal of the night, Levante conceded another own goal through Ruben Vezo and Chukwueze wrapped up Villarreal's emphatic away victory with his second in the 75th minute.

Sunday's goals came as a relief for the 21-year-old who struck the post twice in the Yellow Submarine's Uefa Europa League victory over Dinamo Zagreb on Thursday where he only got an assist.

Chukwueze was later replaced in the 81st minute by Yeremi Pino, however, he has a tally of three goals and two assists after 25 La Liga games this season.

He has equalled last season’s feat of three league goals and he is two goals from matching his best goalscoring return in the Spanish top-flight when he scored five goals in 26 games in the 2018-19 campaign.

The victory shot Unai Emery's men to to fifth in La Liga standings with 49 points after 31 games, but they are 15 points behind fourth-placed Sevilla with seven games remaining.

“We’re fifth, but the fight with Real Betis and Real Sociedad will be very tight and they are going to make it very difficult for us. We’ve won two matches in a row and we want to continue this form against Deportivo Alaves," Emery told the club website.

The Super Eagles winger will be expected to help Villarreal build on their win when they visit Deportivo Alaves for their next league game on Wednesday before they battle Barcelona at the Estadio de la Ceramica on April 25.

We gave Porto the opener on silver platter, fumes Juventus boss Pirlo after Champions League defeat

The Blues boss only has a short-term deal but is earning rave reviews over his performances in the managerial dugout

Thomas Tuchel has spoken about his dream start and future at Chelsea after reaching the FA Cup final in his first three months as the manager in west London.

Chelsea beat Manchester City 1-0 at Wembley Stadium on Saturday evening and will now play Leicester City on 15 May in the finale.

However, the former PSG manager signed just an 18-month contract after replacing Frank Lampard in January, but he isn't worried about the length of his deal as he is hoping to earn talks over new terms through success on the pitch.

What Tuchel said?

"The point is that I had these concerns [about the length of my contract] and after five, maybe 15 minutes, I said to myself that it changes nothing how many years this contract is," Tuchel told reporters.

"I demand from myself to deliver, to have an impact and to be the best I can. So this will not change in the future. If I deserve to stay, I am super happy to stay and I will try to stay as long as possible. I feel like a part of the Chelsea family.

"The club feels super professional here, we have unbelievable quality of support, amount of support and we have a team which it is a pleasure to be at the side-line of and to fight with this team, so honestly, I don’t care what it says in my contract. I need to deserve to stay longer.

"If I deserve to stay longer, I will stay longer, no matter what it says. This is what I demand from myself and I feel free at the moment also and I feel good. I am at the right place at the right moment. Everything else will fall into its place when it is there. If I want to stay longer, I deliver week after week."

How good is Tuchel's start at Chelsea?

As well as reaching the FA Cup final, Chelsea are in the semi-final of the Champions League, where they are set to face Real Madrid.

They also have risen from tenth place to fifth in Tuchel's tenure, with the club aiming to reach the top four to qualify for next season's Champions League.

Tuchel has given Chelsea a chance to compete, having solved defensive issues from the last regime that has allowed a host of impressive unbeaten runs.

In fact, Chelsea remain unbeaten away from home in all competitions during their new manager's time at the club. Their only two defeats have come after a record-breaking 14-game unbeaten run for a new manager at Chelsea, surpassing former boss Luiz Felipe Scolari's start at Stamford Bridge.

What's next for Chelsea?

Chelsea's focus is back on the Premier League with a home clash with Brighton before a trip to the London Stadium to face top-four hopefuls West Ham.

After that, Chelsea travel to the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium to face Real Madrid.

Conor Gallagher called up to England squad

After his brace dismissed Manchester United in the quarter-final, the striker powered the Foxes into the final on Sunday, much to his delight

Kelechi Iheanacho has disclosed that the FA Cup loves him after his impressive run in the competition saw Leicester City qualify for the final at the expense of Southampton.

The Nigerian’s 55th-minute effort powered Brendan Rodgers’ men to a 1-0 win over Ralph Hasenhuettl’s side at the Wembley Stadium.

Iheanacho’s fine goalscoring form in the competition began in the fifth round when his goal sent Brighton and Hove Albion packing from the FA Cup.

Against Manchester United, the 24-year-old found the net on two occasions to set up a date with the Saints.

When asked about his run of form in the oldest tournament in England, the former Manchester City wonderkid told BT Sport : “I think FA Cup loves me and I love the FA Cup.”

The Super Eagle’s heroics not only sent the King Power Stadium outfit to their first FA Cup final since 1969, but it fetched him the man-of-the-match award.

Nevertheless, he claimed the accolade is for the entire team because the result is more about the collective than individuals.

“We did it together – the team. Without the team we couldn't do it, it's not a one-man show,” he continued.

“I am happy with the way we played together, we stick together at the end and I was at the right place at the right time.

“We are in the final now and we are very happy.”

Jamie Vardy played a key role in Iheanacho’s goal and for the umpteenth time, the Nigerian talked up his partnership with the former England international, while explaining the need to work hard to sustain his newly found form.

“I have been saying it since, the partnership between me and Jamie is outstanding. He got the pace, he got everything, he is a great player; he set up the goal,” he added.

“I have been unlucky in the past few years but it's working out really well now and I need to keep working hard to go to the next level.”

Leicester will face off against Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea in the FA Cup final on May 15 at Wembley.

Before then, the Foxes return to action in the Premier League on Thursday at home to West Bromwich Albion.

For Southampton, they will be hoping to pick themselves up for their next outing on the road to Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.

The Manchester United lineup that should start against Roma

The 24-year-old played a crucial role in sending Brendan Rodgers' men into the final of the domestic cup with his goalscoring contribution

The 55th-minute goal fired the Foxes into their first FA Cup final since 1969, where they will play Chelsea on May 15.

Sunday's goalscoring heroics was Iheanacho's 14th goal in the tournament after he scored a brace in last month's quarter-final win against Manchester United.

Across all competitions this season, the Super Eagle has scored 15 goals for Leicester City and football enthusiasts have reacted to his contribution in front of goal.

Solskjaer under pressure again after heavy defeat at Leicester

Abel Mabaso and Thabiso Sesane were among the Bucs players who were praised by the former Hamburger SV manager on the night

Orlando Pirates head coach Josef Zinnbauer lauded his side's defensive performance following the Soweto giants' victory over Maritzburg United on Sunday evening.

Two second-half goals from Vincent Pule inspired the Buccaneers to a 2-0 victory over the Team of Choice in the PSL match at Orlando Stadium.

The Buccaneers were without their two first-choice centre backs Thulani Hlatshwayo and Happy Jele, but they produced a good defensive display.

The experienced duo was replaced by defenders Abel Mabaso and Thabiso Sesane, who were both making their maiden starts in the PSL this season.

"Difficult first half. They were very aggressive in the high press. It took a long time for us to come into the game," Zinnbauer told SuperSport TV.

"Second half was much better. The decisions, we brought a little bit more freshness. And then I'm happy we have [Vincent] Pule.

"I saw Pepe [Sesane] was the man of the match. He made a good game. The first game in the starting line-up."

The win saw the Buccaneers return to winning ways after losing to 4-1 to Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final on Thursday.

The German tactician explained why he substituted Thabang Monare and Ben Motshwari with the Buccaneers set to face Algerian side ES Setif at Orlando Stadium on April 21.

"The result was important for us after the Sundowns game. We know we have a lot of tired players. We are happy about the result and we are looking forward to our next game," he continued.

"Monare and Ben had a lot of games. Ben was a bit tired in the muscles. We needed him as a player.

"He had two times he could score. We changed a little bit the tactics. Pule was very forward-thinking and the two goals were good."

Pirates reserve team captain Sesane, who will turn 20 next month, was named Man of the Match after impressing in the right-back position

"I'm happy about the clean sheet. Pepe and Tsiki [Ntsikelelo Nyauza] made a good game. Mabaso was a long time out," Zinnbauer added.

"He came back and did well as a fullback and then we changed him to a six and he did well. He can play in both positions. Also [Paseka] Mako was priceless. He runs, he fights, he makes metres.

"The team works as a unit and it's important to keep a clean sheet. We have Wayne [Sandilands] with a lot of experience. Yes, the defence was good today."

The VAR Review: Unpicking the failure to award a penalty against Andre Onana vs. Wolves

The Malian and Nigerian were at their best on their maiden appearances as their side cruised to victory over Dudulluspor

Esther Sunday and Bassira Toure made scoring debuts for ALG Spor as they thrashed Dudulluspor 7-0 in their Turkish Kadinlar Ligi encounter at the Emirhan Sport Center Stadium on Sunday.

Nigeria striker Sunday had completed her move from rivals Konak Belediyespor last September, while Malian forward Toure joined the team from Israeli outfit Maccabi Kiryat Gat in March.

Having settled in well enough, coach Asli Canan Sabirli handed Sunday a starting role, while Toure came on from the bench in the second half, and the duo made good contributions in the win.

Ebru Topcu handed the champions ALG an early lead with her 17th-minute effort in the match before she doubled the advantage with her second of the encounter two minutes later.

After a 2-0 first-half lead, Sunday extended the lead for the hosts when she netted the third nine minutes after the restart before Ece Tekmen made it four for ALG in the 57th minute.

Two minutes later, Ecem Esen scored the fifth before the visitors held on until captain Medina Erkan broke their resilence in the 83rd minute, and Toure sealed the win three minutes from full-time.

Their goals were both Sunday and Toure's first for the club as they got the new season off to a fantastic start.

The result put ALG on top of the Turkish Group C table with three points after the opener, above Fomget Genclik on goal difference.

ALG will seek to build on their fine start against second-placed Fomget Genclik on Tuesday and the African duo will hope to continue with their superb displays for their new club.

Chelsea loanee Ugbo, Amallah and Ngadeu-Ngadjui paint Belgium with goals

The English forward of Nigerian descent continued with his impressive goalscoring run in the Belgian top-flight on Sunday

Cameroon international Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui was among the goalscorers as Gent decimated Zulte Waregem 7-2 at the Regenboogstadion, Waregem.

Alessio Castro-Montes started the goal feast for the Buffalos in the 14th minute thanks to an assist from Roman Yaremchuk.

They doubled their advantage 11 minutes later through Yaremchuk who slotted the ball past goalkeeper Louis Bostyn.

Five minutes from the half-time break, Castro-Montes completed his brace with Milad Mohammadi providing the assist in the goal-laden first half.

Three minutes into the second half, Ngadeu-Ngadjui extended Gent’s lead while Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe made it 5-0 from the penalty mark in the 63rd minute.

Alexandre de Bruyn and Yaremchuk completed the obliteration with the hosts’ getting their two goals through Gianni Bruno and Ewoud Pletinckx.

Ngadeu-Ngadjui’s effort against Francky Dury’s men was his first in the 2020-21 campaign as his team climbed to seventh in the Jupiler League having amassed 49 points from 34 league games.

At the Stade Maurice Dufrasne, goals from Selim Amallah and Jackson Muleka inspired Standard Liege to a 3-0 triumph over Beerschot.

Joao Klauss' 44th-minute strike from Hugo Siquet's assist had handed Mbaye Leye’s men a slim 1-0 advantage going into the half-time break.

On the hour mark, Moroccan midfielder Amallah put his team two goals up from a penalty kick he smartly placed past goalkeeper Mike van Hamel.

Four minutes from full-time, DR Congo striker Muleka guaranteed victory for the Reds, who now occupy the sixth position with 50 points.

Chelsea loanee Ike Ugbo handed Cercle Brugge the lead against Oostende, but the encounter at Ostend’s Versluys Arena ended in a 1-1 draw.

Buoyed by a commanding performance that saw him bag a brace against OH Leuven, the former England youth international of Nigerian descent put up another good showing against De Kustboys.

With the first half ending goalless, the 22-year-old put Yves Vanderhaeghe’s men ahead in the 49th minute.

In the 90th minute, however, the hosts ensured that the game ended on a no winner, no vanquished note courtesy of Marko Kvasina’s beauty.

As a result of the point secured away from home, Cercle Brugge now boast of 36 points so far, which takes them five points above the relegation zone.

Caf yet to decide on maiden Caf Women's Champions League host

Contrary to Morocco's claims, the continent's body has revealed the host of maiden women's club tournament is yet to be named

The Confederation of African Football is yet to decide on the host of the maiden edition for the Caf Women's Champions League later this year 2021, an official has confirmed to Goal.

Following its launch in 2020, the Caf Women's Champions League is scheduled to be staged between October and December annually, beginning from this year.

Seven teams will qualify for the final tournament through zonal qualifiers to join the champion club from the host country, who gains automatic qualification.

Caf's reaction comes a few weeks after the Royal Moroccan Football Federation announced through its website that the country has been named the host of the first-ever women's club tournament.

Morocco, who had been earlier won the race to host the expanded 12-nation 2022 Africa Women's Cup of Nations, are clearly keen to secure the rights for the women's club championship.

In his speech, Moroccan FA president Faouzi Lakjaa hinted about the development after its General Assembly meeting in Rabat.

"Morocco will continue to host international and continental matches, and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation team will represent Morocco in the first African Women's Champions League as the champion of the Moroccan League, which our country will host next November," Lakjaa told the FRMF website.

However, the African governing body offered clarifications, while refuting reports of awarding rights to the North African nation.

"We have not awarded hosting rights for the Caf Women's Champions League to any country," the Caf official told Goal.

"The deadline of the bidding process for the country which was initially set for March 31 was extended to April 15.

"We've not decided yet on which country will be the host country. Trust me, when we are done, we make an official announcement like we've been doing for other competitions."

The means the bidding race remains open for countries interested in staging the competition, with South Africa a frontline contender, along with Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea.

With April 15 already passed, the new host for the long-anticipated women's club competition is expected to be named in the coming days by Caf.

Mohammed Kudus: Ghana star wins first career title at Ajax

The 20-year-old has laid hands on his first piece of silverware after his side overcame a challenge from Vitesse Arnhem on Sunday

Ghana international Mohammed Kudus has won his first trophy at Ajax as the side beat Vitesse Arnhem to lift the Dutch Cup on Sunday.

In his first season with the Lancers, the 20-year-old watched from the bench as Brazilian winger David Neres scored in the first minute of injury time to dramatically hand his side a 2-1 win in the cup final.

Ryan Gravenberch put Ajax in the lead in the 23rd minute but Lois Openda hit back for the opposition only seven minutes later to level the score, before Neres' late intervention.

The trophy is Kudus' first career title and the club's 20th Dutch Cup.

The Ghanaian was not the only African who celebrated Ajax's win on Sunday.

Cote d'Ivoire striker Sebastien Haller, who transferred from West Ham United in January, featured for the entire duration of the game.

The Morocco trio of right-back Noussair Mazraoui, winger Oussama Idrissi and attacker Zakaria Labyad also watched from the bench, just as Burkina Faso striker Lassina Traore and Dutch U21 striker of Ghanaian descent Brian Brobbey.

Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana was, however, completely missing from the matchday squad as he continues to serve a Uefa ban for a failed drug test.

Last summer, Kudus joined Ajax on a five-year contract from Danish Nordsjaelland, the deal reportedly worth €9 million.

He made his debut for the side in a league clash against RKC Waalwijk and scored his first goal in a 5-1 Eredivisie triumph over Heerenveen in October.

"Now a new place awaits me and Ajax Amsterdam is a very special club with a very special culture, which I look forward to embracing," Kudus said after sealing his Ajax deal in July last year.

"I look forward to continuing my development at Ajax and continuing the pursuit of my dream.

"I owe it to all my coaches and teammates in FC Nordsjælland and at Right to Dream."

In all competitions so far for Ajax, Kudus has made 16 appearances and scored twice, his number of outings limited by a meniscus injury sustained in October last year.

The youngster's rise in stock has not only been a result of his promising start to life at Ajax.

In four Ghana appearances so far, the attacker has scored two goals and provided two assists.

Nigeria striker Umotong on target for Lewes against Southampton

The Super Falcon found the back of the net again, but her effort could not save her side from crashing out of the FA Cup

Ini Umotong was on the scoresheet but Lewes were eliminated from the FA Cup following a 2-1 defeat to Southampton in the fourth round.

The Nigeria international had been nominated for the FA Women's Championship's Player of the Month award for March following her fine performances, when she scored four goals in all competitions so far.

Following her exploits, the 26-year-old was handed a starting role by Simon Parker and she went on to have a good game despite her side crashing of the competition against the visitors.

Sophia O'Rourke came close in the opening two minutes of the game as the Rooks made a bright start against Southampton at the Dripping Pan.

A poor challenge on Megan Mackey in the area gifted the hosts a penalty but Umotong was denied from the spot in the 35th minute.

However, the visitors eventually broke the deadlock when Georgie Freeland fired home from a free-kick shot six minutes from half-time.

After the restart, Georgia Timms headed a corner onto Umotong's path, offering the latter a chance to make up for her earlier miss, and she made no mistake with her equalising header 17 minutes into the second half.

Some 12 minutes from full-time, the hosts' dreams of advancing were dashed when Rachel Panting struck the winner for the visitors from long-range.

The defeat confirmed the elimination of Parker's side from the FA Cup as Southampton progressed to the fifth round of the competition.

Umotong featured for the entirety of the encounter and has now scored five goals in all competitions, and she will hope increase her tally for Lewes when they host Leicester City on April 25.

Messi or Ronaldo? Greenwood makes his pick between Barcelona icon and ex-Manchester United star

Masandawana had the better of the goalscoring chances at Loftus Versfeld Stadium but failed to cash in and lost the chance to retain their title

In the midst of a very heavy fixture schedule, extra time and penalties in Sunday’s Nedbank Cup semi-final against TTM were a worst-case scenario for Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi.

It was a match which will largely be remembered for the heroics of TTM goalkeeper Washington Arubi, who made a string of outstanding saves in regulation and extra time, before proving decisive in the penalty shoot-out by saving Hlompho Kekana’s spot-kick as the Limpopo side won 6-5 after a goalless 120 minutes.

“In football, you must always accept that some of these things happen. We lost the game, but I believe we played very well, [well enough] to be able to win it. But unfortunately, it was not to be, and they must be congratulated,” Mngqithi told SuperSport TV after the match.

“They [TTM] put up a very good fight, they defended very well and they managed to drag the game on for long. And it was always going to be tough for us, considering that we had another cup match on Monday.

“But be that as it may, we pushed them very hard, we created scoring opportunities, Washington was just there at the end of every ball and no wonder he was the man of the match.”

It was only a third loss in all competitions for Downs this season and there won’t be time to regroup – the Brazilians play AmaZulu and Kaizer Chiefs this week and then Orlando Pirates shortly after that.

“We don’t have a chance, we have to pick ourselves up, we have another tough one [against AmaZulu] on Wednesday,” Mngqithi continued.

“Which requires a lot from us. It’s important that we come back quicker and not slumber because of the result of today.

“In hindsight, you can say it would be better to lose in 90 minutes than to go all the way to penalties when we’ve got such a tough match on Wednesday.

“But we are a big team, we’ve got the personnel. We were unfortunate today that some of our key players had to pull out at the 11th hour.

"Denis [Onyango] and Mosa [Lebusa], but truth be told we never struggled in that regard - we could not score because [TTM] made our life very difficult.”

Sunday’s defeat ended Downs’ hopes of a treble, but they can still win the PSL and the Caf Champions League.

The South African hit another hat-trick for her team as they conquered their visitors in a one-sided encounter

Ode Fulutudilu hit her second consecutive treble for Glasgow City this season as they secured an 8-0 victory over Motherwell in a Scottish Women's Premier League fixture on Sunday.

The South African had missed Banyana Banyana's friendlies against Zambia and Botswana as she tried to settle in well in Scotland.

The 31-year-old, who joined from Finnish giants Aland United in December, made an instant impact, scoring a hat-trick on her debut in her side's 7-0 triumph over Forfar Farmington a week ago.

On Sunday, Aiofe Colivill got the Scottish champions off to a flying start when she opened the scoring in the sixth minute of the encounter.

Fulutudilu doubled the lead for the hosts six minutes later before Colivill netted the third with her second of the contest to ensure a 3-0 lead inside the opening 25th minutes at Broadwood Stadium.

Seven minutes after the start of the second half, the red-hot South African forward helped Glasgow to a fourth with her second of the match, before Lauren Davidson extended the lead to five in the 54th minute.

Fulutudilu hit her treble to increase her side's tally to six, three minutes later before Davidson bagged her brace in the 70th minute and Leanne Crichton wrapped up the scoring eight minutes from full-time.

Fulutudilu played for 75 minutes of the tie before she was replaced by Jo Love and has now scored six goals in two appearances for Glasgow.

However, her South Africa compatriot Janine van Wyk, who turned 34 on Saturday, was an unused substitute.

The win took City to the top of the log with 27 points from 10 games, leapfrogging Rangers on most goals scored despite being tied on goal difference.

In-form Fulutudilu will aim to maintain her flying start in Scotland when they visit Hibernian at Ainslie Park Stadium on April 24.

If there was ever a game to make a point against the creation of a European Super League, then let this contest step right up. This is no walkover so far - Madrid have been pushed every step of the way and probably further by their zealously entertaining hosts. Long may it continue after the break.

No goals in the first half at Coliseum Alfonso Perez but you couldn't have asked for a more enthralling contest, really! The hosts have gone at it with hammer and tongs, relishing the underdog tag - and their visitors have more than shown their mettle to keep them at bay. At half-time, it is Getafe 0-0 Real Madrid.

45' + 2' HALF-TIME: GETAFE 0-0 REAL MADRID

45' Alena! A golden chance for Getafe as the midfielder is found unmarked in the Madrid box by a peach of a pass, but all he can do is chop his finish well over the crossbar. Two added minutes incoming.

43' Zinedine Zidane is cutting a wary figure on the sidelines. His side have obviously come here on the back of a Champions League quarter-final that, if not strictly too taxing, was still another game of football to play. But there's been little sign of serious lethargy.

41' We're just a few minutes out from half-time and there's still been no breakthrough, but it's hard to remember the last time an opening 45 minutes was such electrifying fun for a neutral. All that's missing is the goals, and that's only added to the drama.

39' Soria with the save! The keeper makes it look a little more dramatic than it probably is to stop Vinicius' low header but he gets the job done.

38' Getafe have amassed 15 open play crosses to just three from Madrid. That's quite a gulf between a side fighting relegation and another chasing a title defence.

36' Rodrygo catches Timor now on the edge of the Getafe box as they both lunge for a loose ball. The referee looks poised to go for a card but thinks better of it in the end.

34' Having paused for breath, this has got a little bit clunky now, with both sides trading soft fouls in midfield. It's as if the fluidity has drained out of this game down the proverbial plughole.

32' This game has managed to go two minutes without some death-defying piece of play or near-miss or work of brilliance from either side, somehow. If we've had our half-hour of such skilled hi-jinks, then it has been a pleasure.

30' Marcelo subsequently puts an effort wide from the resultant corner, and then doubles back to help cut off a gorgeous cross flicked on towards Mata near the right post in Madrid's own box. He's generating enough wattage to light up the city with those runs!

28' What a chance for Madrid! Marcelo turns a cross in that beats out Soria and leaves an open goal behind him - but somehow, Getafe get two men in-between it and Mariano to deflect his shot away, with Timor getting the last touch. Pure theatre.

26' The fear here for Getafe is that they could burn out early in this game; the energy of the match has been off the charts since the beginning. If they don't find their goal, will they still have enough to keep Madrid at bay?

24' Mata hits the woodwork! The striker gets a lovely header onto a low cross and beats Courtois, only to be denied by the right post itself as the ball pings away. So close for Getafe.

22' Cucurella hooks a left-footed effort towards goal now for Getafe from outside the box, but it is too high to be giving anybody any trouble in reality.

20' It's like watching a game of tennis this. If there were spectators in the stands, they'd be getting a sore neck from all the left-to-right-and-back-again action going on in this match.

18' Isco pushes an effort wide to the right now too. Madrid are growing in confidence after it was Getafe who mustered the lion's share of those early chances.

17' Madrid cut a lovely path down the right flank now and flash a cross into the Getafe box but Soria is more than up to the task of handling the delivery as it comes back down to earth.

15' We've had six shots in the opening quarter-hour here. Compared with the sluggish start league leaders Atletico had against Eibar - before they somehow conjured five goals - this is absolute dynamite.

13' Madrid's first corner of the game comes to nothing now, flashed wide with a lazy header amid the melee of the box, but it is a handy reminder that this is the side who are league champions after all. They're likely to still have more gears to find in this game.

12' Remember earlier when we said Getafe were too good to go down? This is a great example why. This may be a Madrid side missing several key faces in defence, but there's been such a joy to the open way the hosts have played so far. They are up for the challenge, even when out of form.

10' This is just absolutely frantic stuff! Now Getafe come again, slipping through some gaping cracks in the Madrid defence, and a lovely cut-back is teed up for Arambarri as he enters the box. He fires towards the bottom-left corner - and just puts the ball the wrong side of the post.

8' End-to-end stuff at Coliseum Alfonso Perez! A free-kick for Getafe sees Olivera almost snatch the opener were it not for a low Courtois dive at close range, before Madrid go down the other end with a long ball that sees Mariano wrongfoot Soria and slide a slow ball into an empty net, only to be flagged for offside!

6' What a passage from the hosts! They thread a lovely medley of passes around the edge of the Madrid box and Mata is suddenly eight yards out with the ball at his feet. Chust crashes in front of him in the nick of time to put it away for a well-dealt corner.

4' That Getafe are so close to a relegation battle is a testament to the really tight margins at the bottom end of La Liga. They're too good a side to go down, perhaps, but their recent form has suggested a need for improvement.

2' Some promising early sparks from the hosts who thread a series of passes down the right flank before a final delivery goes straight to Courtois. Getafe pepper the goalkeeper again a moment later with a looping cross he seizes on.

1' We are under way in La Liga, in this clash between Real Madrid and Getafe!

The teams are out at Coliseum Alfonso Perez and we are moments away from kick-off.

In addition, Real Madrid have attempted 40 shots following high turnovers in La Liga this season; the most of any team.

Getafe have suffered more defeats - 23 - and conceded more goals - 73 - against Real Madrid than against any other team in La Liga, in what is surely a cheery omen for the hosts. They've also lost 13 of their last 14 encounters and drew the other.

Subs: Sergio Arribas, Miguel Gutierrez, Karim Benzema, Diego Altube, Antonio Blanco, Pablo Ramón, Toni Kroos, Andriy Lunin.

REAL MADRID (4-2-3-1): Thibaut Courtois; Alvaro Odriozola, Eder Militao, Victor Chust, Marcelo; Luka Modric, Isco; Rodrygo, Marco Asensio, Vinicius Junior; Mariano.

Subs: Ruben Yanez, Sofian Chakla, Josete Miranda, Angel Rodriguez, Koffi, Francisco Portillo, Takefusa Kubo, Damian Suarez, Juan Iglesias, Xabier Etxeita, Chema Rodriguez.

GETAFE (4-2-3-1): David Soria; Allan-Romeo Nyom, Djene Dakonam, David Timor, Mathias Olivera; Mauro Arambarri, Nemanja Maksimovic; Carles Alena, Enes Unal, Marc Cucurella; Jaime Mata.

There's an enforced change for the visitors at the back after Federico Valverde was forced to self-isolate due to COVID-19 concerns this weekend, while Victor Chust picks up only his second Madrid start with Sergio Ramos still sidelined. Enes Unal is the only new face for the hosts.

It is another nearby side to whom Los Blancos travel on their quest, in the shape of Jose Bordalas' hosts. Getafe have punched above their weight in recent years, complete with a Europa League knockout run last season, but they sit perilously close to the relegation places in a tight race this term.

It's been a good week for Zinedine Zidane's side on the field - with progression through to the semi-finals of the Champions League secured against Liverpool - but the defence of their domestic crown is still there to achieve. Victory today will keep them a point behind leaders and local rivals Atletico.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of LaLiga's 2020-21 campaign, as Real Madrid look to keep up the pressure on the summit against struggling Getafe at Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

Leicester City’s Iheanacho will score against Southampton, according to Goal readers

The Nigeria international has been tipped to find the net against the Saints when the Foxes square up against them on Sunday

Leicester City’s Iheanacho will find the net when his team squares up against Southampton, according to Goal readers.

The Foxes take on the Saints at the Wembley Stadium in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final showdown.

To reach this stage, the King Power Stadium defeated Manchester United 3-1 in the last eight to book a date against Ralph Hasenhuettl’s men.

While they prepare to tackle the St. Mary’s Stadium outfit for a place in the final, where they would battle Chelsea, we asked our readers if Iheanacho will continue his fine squaring forward against their fellow English top-flight side.

In a poll conducted on Twitter, 75.9 percent of total votes cast believe Iheanacho – who has scored nine times in his last six games – will find the net against the Hampshire-based team.

Of the votes cast, just 5.9 percent of fans think he would not find the net, whereas, 18.1 % are doubtful of the striker's chances.

The 24-year had expressed the desire of Brendan Rodgers’ men to give their best against Southampton in their quest for a piece of silverware.

“We always have that hunger and desire to win trophies, of course, other teams are preparing as well. We need to sacrifice so many things and give our best shot,” he told LCFC TV.

“That's what we need to do. In training and on the game, we need to do what we can, work extra and give extra than what we do, I think we are getting ready to do that.

"They are a strong side, they have quality individual players and they play as a team as well. We need to do more than them, we need to fight and hurt them first in the first half so we don’t need to go behind.

"We need that concentration and determination to win games and get to where we want.

"I'm in a good place at the moment, I just need to keep helping my team. I need to put in the hard work every day, the form is coming now and I just need to keep going."

Mamelodi Sundowns 0 (5) - 0 (6) TTM: Arubi the hero in major Nedbank Cup upset

The Tshwane giants and defending champions could have wrapped up victory with ease had it not been for the superb form of the visiting shot-stopper

TTM goalkeeper Washington Arubi had what may well be the game of his life in a sensational 6-5 penalty victory over Mamelodi Sundowns, as the Limpopo side booked their spot in the Nedbank Cup final after a goal-less 120 minutes at the Loftus Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

TTM will meet fellow league strugglers Chippa United in the final in a month's time.

Sundowns started well enough and had a couple of openings around the 10 minute mark, both of which fell to Lesedi Kapinga.

But the score-line was never really in danger of changing as his first effort, from 25-yards out, was comfortably held by Arubi, while the second chance, after some nice interplay, was put wide.

Those moments aside, Sundowns struggled to create space and openings against a well-organized, focussed and hard-working TTM side.

Certainly, the tactics employed by TTM coaches Dylan Kerr (who was up in the stands, still waiting for his work permit), Mpho Maleka and David Mathebula seemed spot on as Downs continued to be frustrated for the remainder of the opening stanza.

Both teams started the second half with purpose, although it was the Brazilians who had the chances - the first saw Sphelele Mkhulise running onto a free kick from Thapelo Morena, before lobbing he ball over Arubi's head, only for TTM defender Alfred Ndengane to get back and clear off the line.

There was another great opportunity for Sundowns in the 54th minute when Arubi failed to hold onto Gaston Sirino's low cross, the ball falling kindly for Themba Zwane, but from just 12-yards out the Bafana winger skied the ball into the stands.

The Pretoria side kept plugging away and had another chance in the 66th minute when Lyle Lakay's cross picked out Gaston Sirino, but Arubi did well to save the header.

Soon after Sirino was denied what seemed a good call for a penalty after a rather rash challenge by Diamond Thopola in the TTM box.

With just three minutes of regulation time to play, Downs substitute Sibusiso Vilakazi looked set to win the game for his side when he volleyed powerfully from around 10 metres out, but once again Arubi came to his side's rescue, making a world-class reflex save.

Deep in added time, both Vilakazi and Morena squandered further chances to win the game, resulting in extra time.

Arubi was at it again after the restart, making a fantastic save to keep out Lyle Lakay's stinging free kick.

In the second half of extra time, Downs defender Brian Onyango, on as a sub, was fortunate not to concede a penalty when he sent Thembisani Nevhulamba tumbling in the hosts' box.

With six minutes to play, it was Shalulile's turn to be denied by the brilliance of Arubi, who once more got a strong hand to a close-range volley, and although Onyango netted from the rebound, the goal was correctly called off-sides.

To penalties it went and after both teams had converted their first five spot kicks, Arubi made one last save, this time denying Hlompho Kekana. It was then left to Nevhulamba to beat Ricardo Goss with the last kick of the game, which he did.

Simba SC struggle to beat Mwadui FC, Dodoma Jiji FC fall to Namungo FC

The champions have now reclaimed second spot even though they have played fewer games than their rivals

Simba SC have laboured past Mwadui FC to pick a 1-0 Mainland Premier League win on Sunday in Shinyanga.

John Bocco scored the goal that gave the Caf Champions League quarter-finalists the slim win to move second on the table.

Despite the struggles Mwadui have undergone in the season, they were able to hold dominant Simba for the entire first half. The hosts sat back and launched cautious attacks and were able to keep at bay the champions who have been impressive both on the local and African scenes.

The local giants had to wait until the 79th minute to get a breakthrough. Bocco, who is set to renew a deal since his current contract will end when the season concludes, struck to break the hearts of an otherwise well-drilled Mwadui machine.

The Shinyanga club has had a poor history against the Msimbazi side as they are still looking for a win in five games. Mwadui suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Simba on October 31, 2020, which was their biggest defeat in over two years. Previously, Wekundu wa Msimbazi won both legs in the 2019/20 season as they picked 1-0 and 3-0 victories in the first and second leg respectively.

The loss means Mwadui will remain winless in the last five games where they have drawn once and lost on four occasions. The club finds themselves in a tough position as they fight to save their Premier League status since they are at the bottom with four wins, four draws and 18 losses so far.

On the other hand, Simba have gone above Azam FC to occupy second place with 52 points from 22 games. They are four points below Yanga who have played three more games as the race looks to be a three-horse competition involving the top three sides.

Meanwhile, Namungo FC won by a 1-0 margin against Dodoma Jiji FC. Sixtus Sabilo scored in the first minute and the hosts could not find an equaliser to claim a point.

Finally, Tanzania Prisons registered a 2-1 win over Polisi Tanzania in their respective league encounter.

Jeremiah Juma scored twice; in the 17th and in the 81st minutes to hand Tanzania Prisons the win while Iddy Moby found the back of the net for the home side in the 34th minute.
