Guardiola: Foden is becoming a serious player for Manchester City

The English attacker scored the opener against Aston Villa to continue his breakout year and move his club closer to the Premier League title

Phil Foden's performance on Wednesday in the 2-1 win at Aston Villa underlined his massive growth, according to Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, who says the 20-year-old is becoming a "serious player".

In the build-up to his 22nd-minute opener, the English international pinged a weak-footed ball across the area before darting into open space to finish from a cut-back pass from Bernando Silva.

Foden is up to seven goals and five assists in 25 Premier League appearances this year and has forced his way into Guardiola's plans with consistent excellence.

What has been said?

"This guy [Foden] is growing," Guardiola said to Sky Sports. "His influence in our games is massive. He's becoming a serious player. Phil right now is becoming such an important player. His influence in the final third is so important."

Premier League focus

Manchester City recently lost to Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final, but they are set to compete in the Carabao Cup final this weekend against Tottenham. Additionally, they have reached the Champions League semi-final, where they will clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

Guardiola remains steadfast in his belief that league success means more than anything else. His men are 11 points clear of Manchester United at the top of the table with five matches left to play.

"The Premier League is the most important title to win," Guardiola said following the Villa victory.

Super League plans 'worst case of bullying', says ex-Manchester United midfielder Butt

Several of the club's former players have criticised those in charge at Old Trafford for their role in forming the proposed breakaway competition

Former Manchester United star Nicky Butt says that the recent Super League plans were a demonstration of "the worst case of bullying".

Man Utd were among 12 teams confirmed to be part of the breakaway league, which fell apart after each of the six English clubs involved pulled out amid overwhelming backlash.

Ed Woodward, Man Utd's executive vice-chairman, has since resigned and will step down at the end of the year, while co-chairman Joel Glazer penned an open letter to supporters where he admitted that the club got it wrong over the Super League proposals.

What dd Butt have to say?

"I don't think an apology is too great anyway if I'm honest," he told Sky Sports. "I think what happened should never have happened.

"What happened is the worst case of bullying in my opinion, from powerful people, so whether they apologise or not is irrelevant to me really."

When asked how long it would take for ownership to regain the supporters' trust, he added: "A hell of a long time and I don't see how it's possible. It's difficult to regain someone's trust after going behind people's backs for so long. It's going to be difficult, I don't know how they do it.

"I think that's how some of these businessmen work. They work in the shadows if you like and they do what they think is right, but I think the shocking thing is they can't have empathy for the fans who make this sport so great.

"Without the fans, the sport is nothing, and to not be on board with what the fans want, that's the alarming thing for me.

"So it's a lesson to people who come into the country and come into powerful football clubs and think they can do whatever they want because they are owners and they are very, very wealthy.

"Over the past few hours in this country it has proved not to be the case."

Man Utd legends respond

Butt isn't the only former Manchester United star to have harsh words for his old club this week.

Gary Neville called all of those involved with the Super League "scavengers", later demanding further repercussions at Manchester United after Ed Woodward's resignation, insisting "the trunk of the tree is gone, now let's go for the roots".

Rio Ferdinand, meanwhile, admitted to being "embarrassed" by the club's involvement in the plans, which he describes as a declaration of "war on football".

Newcastle 'Close' to Agreeing Deal to Sign Marcão From Galatasaray

The competition was announced on Sunday as a challenger to the Champions League, but by Tuesday it had all but fallen apart

Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho has expressed his delight at the collapse of the Super League, saying its demise means "football wins".

City were among 12 teams to sign up for the competition when it was announced on Sunday, but by Wednesday all but four of the teams had officially pulled out.

After his side defeated Aston Villa 2-1 on Wednesday, the Brazilian made his thoughts on the proposed competition clear.

What was said?

Speaking to Sky Sports after City went within eight points of the Premier League title, the veteran midfielder expressed relief that the widely criticised competition will not move forward.

He said: "It’s been crazy since Saturday after the Chelsea defeat in the FA Cup – guys were a bit down and then on Monday the Super League comes out and we were surprised.

"We didn’t expect it but eventually they had good sense and it was the right thing to do. Everyone who loves football didn’t support the Super League including our players so we’re happy now that it’s turned around, but it was a surprise.

"It’s a tough situation, we wanted to find out from the people at the top of the club to see the reasons why they are there with the other clubs. We wanted to come out and say we are against it but we had to have a chat among the players and we all agreed to wait for the club statement. We are happy in the end because football wins."

City forced to apologise

After all six Premier League teams dropped out of the Super League on Tuesday, many were forced to issue an apology to their supporters for their involvement.

City were no different, as chief executive Ferran Soriano apologised to supporters, saying those in charge "lost sight of the historic values of the club".

Earlier in the day, Liverpool owner John W Henry said sorry to fans and took full responsibility for the club's involvement.

SDT warning to Gor Mahia: We will nullify elections if you don't follow constitution

The Lilywhites put in a gutsy home display against Southampton amid a dramatic week and they were made to work hard for all three points

Gareth Bale has admitted "minor teething issues" for Tottenham in their first match under caretaker manager Ryan Mason after the sacking of Jose Mourinho, as the club needed a stoppage time penalty from Son Heung-min to claim a 2-1 victory over Southampton on Wednesday.

Going into proceedings, Spurs endured a chaotic 72 hours that included the Super League fiasco as well as Mourinho's departure, but Bale said a half-time chat helped settle the team down and their improved effort over the final 45 minutes was ultimately rewarded with the winning goal.

Bale admitted it is "going to take some time" to acclimatise to playing under Mason, who at 29 years old is the youngest manager in Premier League history.

What has been said?

"Southampton came at us and pushed hard first half, we've only had a couple of days with the new manager to try and do some things so it's going to take some time," Bale said to Sky Sports.

"But we had a good chat at half-time about what we could improve and we did that second half and controlled the game and deserved the victory.

"[We need to] just to be patient, solve positional issues as a team. We've only had a couple of days to work on that so just minor teething issues. We'll continue to improve for the [Carabao Cup] final at the weekend."

Bale also claimed the Super League drama is behind the squad and no longer an issue.

"Us as players all we have been focussing on is trying to get the new manager to settle in, the matter's closed as far as I'm concerned - it's not happening so we're all good we can carry on as normal," he said.

The bigger picture

Tottenham can now take the morale boost of a positive start under Mason into their biggest match of the campaign this weekend - the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City, that presents the chance to win a first trophy since 2008.

Olunga scores first hat-trick in 2021 AFC Champions League as Al Duhail win seven-goal thriller

The Kenya international was the hero at the King Abdullah Sports City as the Red Knights climbed to the summit of their group

Michael Olunga continued his fine goalscoring streak in Qatar with a hat-trick in Al Duhail’s 4-3 victory over Esteghlal in an AFC Champions League encounter on Wednesday.

The Harambee Stars striker’s heroics made him the first player to score three goals in an AFC Champions League match this year.

Olunga inspired the hosts' comeback in Jeddah with his equaliser six minutes after Amir Arsalan Motahari opened the scoring for Esteghlal in the fourth minute.

He fired Al Duhail ahead in the 27th minute, but Mali's Cheick Diabate did not let the lead last for long as he drew Farhad Majidi's side level, seven minutes later.

Both teams were set to go into the break on level terms but Abdullah Abdulsalam changed trajectory as he restored Al Duhail's lead in the 43rd minute.

After the restart, Farshid Esmaeili made it 3-3 for the visitors but Olunga's late match-winning goal secured all three points for the Red Knights.

The Kenya international scored his third goal of the night in the 85th minute, courtesy of an assist from Ismaeel Mohammad.

He played the entire duration alongside former Morocco and Juventus centre-back Medhi Benatia who was a key force in the defence.

The crucial victory extended Al Duhail’s unbeaten run in the competition and fired the Qatari giants to the top of Group C with seven points after three matches, while Esteghlal trail in the second spot with six points after the same number of matches.

Olunga has now scored four goals in three AFC Champions League matches, taking his tally to 14 goals since he joined Sabri Lamouchi's side from Japanese club Kashiwa Reysol in January.

The 27-year-old ended the Qatar Stars League season with six goals in nine matches as the Red Knights finished second behind Xavi's title-winning squad Al Sadd.

Next up for Olunga and Al Duhail is a trip to Iran for the return fixture of their Champions League against Esteghlal on Saturday.

Icardi delighted with Coupe de France hat-trick amid 'complicated' season at PSG

The Argentine striker has struggled with injury this season but has returned in time to help his team push for a treble

Mauro Icardi was happy to score a hat-trick for PSG on Wednesday, during what he admitted has been a "complicated" season.

Icardi scored six minutes into the 5-0 Coupe de France win over Angers, adding two second-half goals to help send his side to the semi-final.

After starring for PSG last season while on loan from Inter, the Argentine hasn't had the same success in 2020-21 after the Ligue 1 giants purchased him on a permanent basis.

What was said?

“I think the team played a really good game. We started in the best possible way to win and advance to the semi-final," Icardi told Eurosport 2. "We have a large squad where everyone must be ready to play each game. This is the strength of this team: We are ready when we need to be.

"The goal against Saint-Etienne is important to stay in the title race but for me too, for my confidence after my injury.

"We have to keep going, go to the final and play in the best possible way. It’s very hard for a player to be out of the squad and not play but the team has a lot of deadlines and it’s hard for them too.

"This year has been complicated for me but I have come back, I am well, in good shape and I want to give my best so that my coach can play me as much as possible.

"I am very happy with my hat-trick this evening and I am very happy with the congratulations from my team-mates."

How has Icardi's season gone?

The striker has battled various injury issues all season, and Wednesday marked just his 14th start in all competitions in 2020-21.

Icardi has also started on the bench several times when healthy as he battles the likes of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Moise Kean and Angel Di Maria for minutes.

The 28-year-old did score a dramatic stoppage-time winner against Saint-Etienne at the weekend as PSG closed to within one point of leaders Lille. Overall, Icardi has 10 goals from 20 appearances this season.

Evra: FFF chief should quit over racism claims

The 27-year-old playmaker explained that they need to stick together with the Buccaneers set to face the Beautiful Birds

Orlando Pirates midfielder Fortune Makaringe was disappointed after they failed to secure a win over ES Setif in the Caf Confederation Cup match on Wednesday afternoon.

The Buccaneers were held to a 0-0 draw by Algerian giants in their penultimate Group A match which was played at Orlando Stadium in Soweto.

Pirates needed a victory in order to qualify for the quarter-finals with a game spare in the group stage, but they were frustrated by the two-time Caf Champions League winners.

Makaringe. who played the entire match, explained that it was imperative for the Soweto giants not to lose the game against a Setif side which was desperate for a win on the day.

"It was a difficult game indeed," Makaringe told the club's social media platforms

"We knew they would come out with all guns blazing because they needed a win, and we also needed a win.

"But we had that mentality that if we can't win, then we don't lose that something that we need to have as part of our fighting spirit of the team."

Pirates are now three points clear at the top of the Group A standings with one game left, but they will qualify for the knockout phase if Libyan side Al Ahli Benghazi fail to defeat Nigerian side Enyimba on Wednesday night.

Makaringe stated that it is important for them to stick together as the Buccaneers look to go all the way and clinch their maiden Confederation Cup trophy.

"We had to make secure at least that point. We needed to win, we tried our best to win, but wasn't to be. We have to focus on the next game," he added.

"Well, we have to be disappointed because we always play to win, had we won we would have secured our place in the next round.

"So, we have to stick together as a team and we need to keep motivating one another, that is one thing we need to do all the way."

Pirates will travel to Dobsonville Stadium where they are scheduled to face Swallows FC in the original Soweto Derby match on Saturday.

Ex-Barcelona boss Bartomeu led Super League movement as part of five-year push for breakaway competition

The former Blaugrana president was a key figure from the plan's early stages right up until his departure from the club last year

Former Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu led Super League talks for several years during his time with the club, Goal can reveal, with the Blaugrana joining Juventus, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Arsenal as leading teams in a five-year push to form the new competition.

The original discussions of a potential Super League began to take shape during the 2015-16 season, with those discussions eventually leading the way to Sunday's announcement that 12 clubs had signed on to form a new breakaway tournament.

However, those plans have come crashing down as teams have withdrawn amid widespread criticism from fans and players alike.

The foundations of a Super League

Goal has learned discussions originally began during the 2015-16 campaign, with several of football's elite clubs mulling over the potential of a competition featuring the top teams in the world.

However, those discussions didn't get too far, with the European Clubs Association (ECA) and UEFA calming those clubs before those talks became anything more concrete.

Bartomeu though pushed for the Super League to become a reality, joining up with Andrea Agnelli, president of Juventus and president of the ECA, to define the foundations of potential new competition.

They were soon joined by Florentino Perez at Real Madrid, as well as Manchester United and Arsenal. At the time UEFA and the ECA signed a new deal defining the Champions League's format until 2021.

In 2018, after seeing UEFA's distribution of money, the Super League proposal accelerated with Barcelona as one of the key leaders. At that time, Bartomeu was the only board member familiar with the plan and he, along with two executives, secretly worked to make it a reality.

Bartomeu and the others involved signed a confidentiality agreement to prevent leaks as the competition's format was defined, including how it would work alongside domestic leagues and how income would be obtained and distributed among the clubs involved.

At Real Madrid, Perez was also fully invested and was willing to do whatever it took to push the plan through.

Once the plan was finalised in 2020, Bartomeu was prepared to share it with the board of directors, even as his own reign collapsed around him. The president explained the project to the board, which approved the signing of a document of intentions that, due to the confidentiality agreement, they could not see.

At the time, they trusted Bartomeu and, on the day of his resignation, he unveiled the plan, which did not commit the club to anything and had to still be transformed into a binding contract.

Bartomeu's replacement, Joan Laporta, signed the contract on Saturday after seeing the amount of money that would come into the club. Still, the document was still not complete, as there were still matters to decide, such as money distribution.

That distribution would not be equal between the 12 clubs involved, but it was not written down and was never fully decided upon.

Barcelona, despite the events of the last few days, still believe in the Super League.

"We believe that it is a very attractive sporting competition that provides more financial resources and also because we maintain the domestic leagues," the club told Goal.

Now, following the withdrawal of almost all the founder teams, Barca remain convinced that there will be negotiations with UEFA to try and reach a new agreement, which is why they have yet to make an official public statement.

The Nigeria international was in action to help Oscar Fernandez's side defeat their City rivals in the Spanish capital

Rita Chikwelu provided an assist as Madrid CFF advanced into the semi-finals of the Copa de la Reina following a 2-1 quarter-final win over Real Madrid at Centro Deportivo Municipal Antiguo Canodromo.

After back-to-back defeats to Tenerife and Valencia, Oscar Fernandez's side was seeking to avoid another loss against their City rivals, having lost 2-0 in their first meeting this term in January.

On the other side, Real Madrid were also hoping to extend their dominance over their close-door rivals and return to winning ways, following a 1-1 draw at Real Betis the last time out.

The Nigeria international has continued to play a key role to help Madrid keep alive their Champions League dreams, and she made the best of her starting role with a 2-1 extra-time win over Real.

Madrid CFF had made a promising start to the encounter when Brazilian forward Geyse opened the scoring for the hosts, after just three minutes of action, thanks to Chikwelu's brilliant assist.

After the break, Real fought their way back into the contest when they were handed a penalty and Sweden international Kosovare Asllani converted from the spot to force the tie to a stalemate at full-time.

With the tie dragged into extra-time, Priscila Borja struck with 10 minutes left in the 30 added minutes to seal the winner for Madrid.

The result saw Madrid end their two-match winless run and also progress to the semi-finals of the competition, joining Atletico Madrid who earlier edged Real Sociedad 2-1.

Nigeria's Chikwelu featured for the duration of the game in her 23rd appearance for Madrid CFF this season, along with compatriot Osinachi Ohale.

Chikwelu will hope to help Madrid continue with their fine performances when they take on Real Madrid in their next Spanish Primera Iberdrola derby game on April 25.

Real Madrid to consider selling Raphael Varane as contract winds down

The Anglo-Nigerians made key contributions to help Jonathan Woodgate’s men extend their winning run at the Den

Dominic Solanke scored and provided two assists while Arnaut Danjuma found the back of the net as Bournemouth secured a 4-1 victory over Millwall in Wednesday’s Championship game.

Danjuma recently revealed he is considering switching his allegiance to the Nigeria national team after being consistently snubbed by the Netherlands since making only two appearances for the side.

In an effort to boost his chances with both the Super Eagles and the Dutch team, the winger delivered an impressive performance at the Den.

His compatriot Solanke was also in spectacular form in the encounter, increasing his tally to help the Cherries extend their winning streak to five games.

Solanke ignited the surge for goals in the 16th minute of the match when he set up Philip Billing to open the scoring.

Danjuma then doubled Bournemouth’s lead with a fine effort in the 27th minute after receiving a timely assist from Asmir Begovic.

Moments before the half-time break, Solanke found David Brooks with a fine pass and the forward then hit his effort into the back of the net to further help the Cherries increase their lead.

Millwall made several attempts to fight back after the restart of the second half and reduced the deficit in the 49th minute through Jed Wallace.

Solanke then got a goal of his own in the 67th minute after receiving a timely assist from Billing to seal the victory for Jonathan Woodgate’s men.

Danjuma featured for 68 minutes before he was replaced by Junior Stanislas while Solanke made way for Sam Surridge.

The victory propelled Bournemouth to the third spot on the Championship table after gathering 77 points from 43 games.

Solanke has now scored 14 goals and provided nine assists in 38 league appearances this season while Danjuma has 15 goals to his credit.

The Anglo-Nigerians will hope to continue their eye-catching performances when Bournemouth slug it out against Brentford on April 24.

Everton goalkeeper Pickford ruled out of England World Cup qualifiers with injury

Ryan Mason made history on Wednesday, becoming the youngest manager in Premier League history while winning his debut in charge of Tottenham.

Mason, taking over Spurs on a caretaker basis after Jose Mourinho's sacking earlier this week, saw his side come back to defeat Southampton 2-1 on Wednesday.

At 29 years, 312 days old, Mason broke the previous record by nearly three years.

What was said?

"I thought it was fantastic, so proud of the boys," Mason told Sky Sports after the game. "So much energy, so much bravery, especially after the first 20-30 minutes as well.

"I thought [Southampton] came out the blocks, they were very good in the first half, we found it difficult at times.

"But the guys showed belief, they stuck to the plan and full credit to the guys because the energy, the commitment, bravery and I'll be honest: I thought there was only one team that was going to win it."

Mason's record

Mason broke the previous Premier League mark, which was set by Attilio Lombardo when he managed Crystal Palace at age 32 years, 67 days in 1998.

Mason also became the youngest person to manage an English top-flight game since Frank Sibley (29y 308d) for QPR vs Everton in October 1977.

Spurs edge closer to European place

Danny Ings opened the scoring for Southampton in the first half, but Spurs turned the game around in the second half with goals from Gareth Bale and a late penalty from Son Heung-min.

The comeback win meant Mason has equaled Mourinho's total of Premier League matches won when the team trailed at half-time (W1 D2 L11).

With the three points, Tottenham moved to within two points of Chelsea, who occupy the fourth and final Champions League place in the table. The Blues do have a game in hand on their London rivals.

Facundo Pellistri on verge of sealing La Liga loan from Manchester United

The Nigerian found the back of the net for the first time this season as her side forced a draw against the Tunisian's team

Ramat Abdulkareem scored her first goal of the season in Adana Idmanyurduspor’s 1-1 draw against Mariem Houij's Atasehir Belediyespor in a Turkish Kadınlar Ligi Group B fixture on Wednesday.

After starring in Adana's 2-1 victory over Hakkarigucu, the Nigeria international was handed her second start of the season by coach Meryem Ozyumsak and she rescued her side from defeat.

Atasehir Belediyespor were desperately aiming to claim their first win of the season against Adana, following a 1-1 draw on the opening day of the season against 1207 Antalyaspor on Saturday.

Atasehir made the brightest start to the contest as they were gifted a penalty for Tunisia international Houij who handed them an early goal inside the first minute, having superbly converted from the spot.

After being a goal down in the first half, the Nigerian midfielder came to the rescue of the visitors from defeat in the 72nd minute when she netted her first goal of the season for Ozyumsak's side.

Nigeria's Abdulkareem was in action for the entire duration of the game as Adana maintained their unbeaten start to the season.

On the other hand, Tunisia's Houij was on parade for the full 90 minutes for Atasehir. They share the same number of points with Adana.

The result means Adana are placed top of Group B with four points and will hope to confirm their passage to the quarter-finals against 1207 Antalyaspor in their next league game on Friday.

For Atasehir, they also remain unbeaten after two games with two points and will seek to ground out victory against Hakkarigucu in the final group encounter on the same day.

Timbers sign Chile's Mora from Pumas UNAM

The Nigeria internationals are delivering spectacular showings for their respective clubs

Napoli centre-forward Victor Osimhen has praised his compatriots, Leicester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho, Genk’s Paul Onuachu and Almeria’s Sadiq Umar for their goalscoring performances.

Iheanacho is arguably enjoying his best season since joining the Foxes in 2017, having scored 15 goals and provided five assists across all competitions.

The attacker recently helped Leicester advance into the FA Cup final for the first time in 52 years following their victory over Southampton in the semi-finals, where he bagged the match-winning goal.

Umar has been turning heads with Almeria and is close to helping the club return to La Liga, having scored 24 goals, amid other dazzling displays.

Onuachu has also been in terrific form, for Genk in the current campaign firing on all cylinders and has now taken his tally to 31 goals across all competitions.

The lanky forward also recently played a key role as the Nigeria national team secured back-to-back victories over the Republic of Benin and Lesotho to qualify for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

"I think they are all doing quite well - Onuachu, Iheanacho and Umar. I am happy for them and I'm happy about their form,” Osimhen told ESPN.

"And of course, being able to capitalize on their current form for the national team is really important. Kelechi has been doing quite well and he has been scoring goals. Onuachu also, I think he's the leading goalscorer in Europe which is very important.

"He gave us the winning goal in the game against Benin Republic. It shows that we can capitalize on their form and count on them."

"If you have seen the highlights you can see how happy everyone was for Paul. For me, he is a great striker, he is one that possesses a lot of qualities not just in the air, but also on the ground with his speed.

"Every one of us was really happy for him after he scored. When he came to the dressing room, he got a round of applause from the whole squad, and he deserved it. For me, I'm really and I'm genuinely happy for him. And I think he's going to continue to build on from there. And I wish him the very best."

Osimhen recently overcame a shoulder injury and coronavirus-related problems and is looking forward to improving on his performances for club and country.

"Of course, for me, I just need to keep on working hard, keep on doing well for my club and for the Super Eagles, also in order to remain the number one and if I'm called upon I think I will give my all and I think this is really important," he added.

'It's not for me, it's not for my individual glory, it's for the team, which is really good and I think the rest of the strikers are also ready to take the spot so I have to keep working hard."

Osimhen also believed it is time the Super Eagles won the Africa Cup of Nations title again with the calibre of players in the team, having last lifted the trophy in 2013.

"I think we've got everything we need to win the next Afcon and to go even further to qualify for the World Cup. Because this is a squad that has extremely wonderful talent in this team, from the goalkeepers to the strikers, from the strikers to the bench," he added.

"Also, of course, we have a very good coach and technical staff that can prepare us well for each game as it comes. And I think for us we have individual players who can individually win games for us - the likes of Kelechi, Samuel Chukwueze, Alex Iwobi, myself, Paul and rest of the squad.

"And I know of course, that a lot is being expected from this team regardless of the fact that we're young. I think with what we got on our side we can really go far as well as winning the Afcon."

Bafana Bafana coach Broos overlooks big stars, calls up three new faces for Uganda friendly

The question will finally be answered as to who the local football governing body has settled on to take charge of the national team

The South African Football Association says they will unveil the new Bafana Bafana coach on Saturday, as Carlos Queiroz reportedly emerges as the firm favourite to take the job.

Following overwhelming interest in the Bafana job, the Africa Cup of Nations-winning duo of Herve Renard and Hugo Broos are also being touted as possible replacements for Molefi Ntseki who was fired at the end of March.

Ntseki was shown the exit door after South Africa failed to qualify for the 2022 Afcon finals following a 2-0 away defeat to Sudan.

Now the man to take over from Ntseki is set to be announced on Saturday.

"Safa will announce new Bafana Bafana head coach on Saturday, 24 April 2021," the association said on Wednesday.

The Safa technical committee reportedly went through more than 200 applications for the Bafana job and is believed to have forwarded the names of Queiroz, Renard and Broos to the association's national executive committee to choose from.

Queiroz who was South Africa coach between 2000 and 2002 is strongly tipped to return.

The 68-year-old Portuguese has been without a job since leaving his post as the Colombia mentor last year, and is available for a new challenge.

Since partying ways with South Africa, he has been involved in excellent coaching jobs; working as Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant manager at Manchester United as well as being head coach at La Liga giants Real Madrid.

He also had stints as Portugal and Iran coach, guiding them at a combined three Fifa World Cup tournaments.

Challenging Queiroz is Frenchman Renard whose name has been prominently mentioned despite him being the current Saudi Arabia coach.

While he has been heavily linked with the Bafana job, Safa might have to dig deep in their coffers to match the high salary he has been earning in Saudi Arabia.

Being the only coach who has won Afcon with two different teams - Zambia (2012) and Ivory Coast (2015), Renard's CV is said to have charmed Safa.

Another candidate who is reported to be a strong contender is Hugo Broos who guided Cameroon to the 2017 Afcon triumph.

The Belgian is unattached after leaving his role as KV Oostende caretaker coach in April 2019.

Caf Confederation Cup: How Orlando Pirates could start against Raja Casablanca

Namungo FC 0-3 Raja Casablanca: Confederation Cup debutants end campaign on losing note

Despite fighting until the group stages, the Tanzanian representatives did not pick a single point in six games

Namungo FC's Caf Confederation Cup campaign ended with an unwanted record after they fell 3-0 to Raja Casablanca in Wednesday's Group D game.

The Tanzanian side, who debuted and sailed – against the odds - to the group stage could not pick a point from a pool that also consisted of Nkana FC of Zambia and Pyramids FC of Egypt.

The 3-0 win in Dar es Salaam means the Moroccan club has sailed through the group stage without losing a single game.

Illias Hadad opened the scoring for Casablanca in the eighth minute with an assist from Zakaria Habti. Namungo had to make a change in the 12th minute when Kalos Kirenge was injured and Hamisi Mgunya took his position. Two minutes after making the change, the hosts conceded the second goal when Fabrice Ngoma - with an assist from Ayoub Nanah - fired past Nourdine Balora of Namungo.

Habti made it 3-0 in the 36th minute with Nanah again delivering the assist before the game entered its half-time break with Casablanca leading with a huge margin.

Just before the break, Namungo head coach Hemed Morocco made a change when he withdrew Hamisi Swalehe for Steve Nzigamasabo. Another change was made in the 44th minute when Stephen Sey came on to replace Hashimu Manyanya.

Stephen Duah became the first player to be yellow-carded when he was cautioned in the 56th minute. Casablanca's first change came in the 61st minute when Riad Idbouiguiguine was introduced in place of Ngoma.

The Tanzanian side made yet another substitution when former Simba SC winger Shiza Kichuya came on for Reliants Lusajo four minutes after the hour mark. A minute later after the Kichuya-Lusajo exchange, Sixtus Sabilo came out and his position was filled by Eric Kwizera.

In the 74th minute, Lucas Kikoti was yellow carded in what became the last card to be flashed in the Dar es Salaam encounter. Casablanca's Nanah was withdrawn in the 76th minute and Oussama Soukhane came on before Mohamed Azrida and Abdelilah Makdour exchanged places a minute later.

The Abdeljalil Jbira and Mohamed Souboul changes were the last by the Moroccan side who were at that point assured of yet another victory in the continental competition as they sailed to the knockout stage with an unblemished record.

John Obi Mikel to Manchester United: What could have happened?

The birthday boy sparked a transfer saga in the mid-2000s, and so it's worth pondering how differently things might have turned out

It is the mark of great dramas that they bear scrutiny years after their finales air. They are rested, but they never rest; constantly exhumed and pored over for some fresh insight or plain old nostalgia.

Mikel John Obi’s eventual move to Chelsea in 2006 was precisely that – a suspenseful soap with twists and turns aplenty, and more than a dollop of suspense, and even now that the man himself has clarified the events that led to his decision to renege on a contract with Manchester United, there remains still a tantalizing question to ponder over.

How might things have turned out if he had stayed the course, and turned out for the Red Devils instead?

In order to begin to ponder this, one must first see exactly how it did turn out for the parties involved.

Mikel's time in London was one littered with successes: a Champions League success from two final appearances, one Europa League winners’ medal, two Premier League titles, two League Cups and four FA Cups. His influence at Stamford Bridge also rose steadily, and whereas he fulfilled a more sparing role in the early years, come the improbable run to glory in Europe in 2012 he had become firmly established as a first-teamer.

For their part, Manchester United went on to play in three Champions League finals, winning one (incidentally, against Chelsea); they also amassed five league titles, one FA Cup and two League Cup triumphs.

While Chelsea marginally shaded the trophy haul in terms of pure numbers then, it is clear that neither party came off significantly worse on that front from the messy break-up. As such, it is not so much a case of if things might have been better, as what might have changed as a result.

Perhaps the biggest potential change surrounds former England international Owen Hargreaves.

Amid a strong league 2006/07 season that saw them claim a first title in four years, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side were in with a chance at a famous treble until the start of May. Those hopes were, however, extinguished ruthlessly by AC Milan in the Champions League semi-final second leg.

Despite arriving San Siro with a slender advantage and on the back of a rousing comeback in the first leg, the Red Devils were swatted aside 3-0 in the rain. Time and again, the hosts exploited the space between the lines of United’s defence and midfield, and Michael Carrick in particular endured a difficult evening. Midfield partner Darren Fletcher fared no better.

It was for this reason that Ferguson pulled out all the stops to sign midfielder Hargreaves from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2007. That transfer made a €25m dent in the transfer kitty, but it was clear to the Scot that was an area in desperate need of reinforcement.

“I was only ever leaving Bayern Munich for Man United and I remember Sir Alex said to me 'one of the reasons I signed you is to help us win the Champions League, I think you can help us do that',” Hargreaves told BT Sport in 2019.

Hargreaves would star as United went all the way that season, overcoming early injury constraints to play decisive roles against Barcelona in the semi-final (out of position at right-back in both legs) and Chelsea in the final. In all, he spent four years at Old Trafford, but only made five more appearances after that first season.

He would later suggest the quality of healthcare he received while at the club may have been to blame.

His relationship with Ferguson would also deteriorate over time – the Scottish manager labelled the midfielder his worst-ever signing, and described the transfer as a “disaster” in his autobiography.

Had Mikel been on Manchester United’s books already, it is unlikely they would have felt the need to shell out for a frequently-hobbled Hargreaves.

Instead, the former Nigeria captain, having spent 18 months getting acclimated at Old Trafford, would have been well-placed to immediately step into that breach.

In addition, not only was Mikel younger, but he enjoyed a comparatively sterling injury record, and also demonstrated his versatility by playing a few games out of position at centre-back for Chelsea.

For the player’s part, he might have benefitted from a less restrictive tactical brief had he joined Manchester United instead.

Much has been made of Jose Mourinho’s decision to deploy him as a holding midfielder, but in truth, his skill set and physical attributes always lent themselves to the role. That said, while the idea of Ferguson’s United as a relentlessly attacking side is overplayed, he certainly would have been granted greater license to display the full range of his abilities in a less regimented system.

In over 200 Premier League appearances, Mikel managed a single goal and 11 assists in his time at Chelsea. For contrast, Michael Carrick, who similarly played at the base of the midfield for United, scored 23 and assisted 36 in just under 500 appearances.

It did not always manifest in his time in England, but Mikel always had a flair for goalscoring, as is clear whenever he was pressed into a more attacking role for Nigeria.

It does paint a picture, and perhaps playing a freer game would have afforded the 33-year-old the degree of esteem his talent deserved.

As already established, there was enough success on both sides of the aisle that there can be little regret on their parts, but it is easy to see how the question of how things might have panned out remains an intriguing one.

'Real isn't bad as a next step' - Kimmich welcomes Bayern Munich team-mate Alaba move to Madrid

The 28-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Los Blancos at the end of the season when his contract with the Bundesliga champion expires

Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich has welcomed his team-mate David Alaba's reported move to Real Madrid, saying Los Blancos are a logical next step for the Austrian.

Alaba has announced he will leave Bayern at the end of the season when his contract expires and has been strongly tipped with a move to Madrid.

Kimmich has endorsed the proposed transfer, saying Alaba has earned the right to move to the Spanish giants.

What was said?

"He has won everything here multiple times," Kimmich told Sky Germany. "Twice the triple, once even six titles in one year. Real is in any case a worthy club.

"There aren't many steps you can take after playing for Bayern but Real Madrid isn't that bad as the next step."

Alaba's trophy-filled Bayern career

The 28-year-old has won everything possible at Bayern since moving as a youth player from Austria Vienna.

Alaba has won a grand total of 26 trophies during his time at Allianz Arena, including nine Bundesliga titles and two Champions League crowns.

The defender is likely to add one more trophy to his haul before he leaves, with Bayern currently sitting in first place in the Bundesliga table, 10 points above RB Leipzig.

Kimmich's own future in doubt

On Saturday, Goal and Spox reported that Kimmich has split with his agent and will now represent himself in future contract negotiations. The move increased speculation around the 26-year-old's future, as he could seek improved terms on a contract that runs out in 2023.

Everton boss Ancelotti confirms Gbamin will be out of action for eight weeks

The Baggies boss is wary by the threat posed by the Super Eagles star and the Englishman ahead of Thursday's league clash at the King Power Stadium

Leicester City's Kelechi Iheanacho and Jamie Vardy are the best pairing in the Premier League currently, according to West Bromwich Albion manager Sam Allardyce ahead of their clash on Thursday.

Three days ago, the duo linked up at Wembley Stadium to fire the Foxes into the FA Cup final as Vardy provided the assist that helped Iheanacho score the match-winning goal in their 1-0 triumph over Southampton.

Vardy has scored 14 goals across all competitions this season while his Nigerian teammate has 15 goals to his name already.

On Thursday, Iheanacho will be aiming to surpass his best goalscoring record in the Premier League having equalled his 2015-16 achievement of eight goals.

With West Brom looking to boost their survival hopes with a third straight win, Allardyce emphasised the need to stop the duo if they want to leave the King Power Stadium with maximum points.

“We’ve got to look after maybe the best pairing in the Premier League at the moment,” Allardyce was quoted by the Independent.

“Iheanacho and Vardy are probably two of the most dangerous forwards in the Premier League.

“Part of our task is to try and keep them from scoring a goal and making sure we give ourselves a chance of winning the game. That will be a key area for our defence to try and look after those two.

“Getting to the FA Cup final will have lifted Leicester’s spirits because that is a major achievement. On the back of that will make life difficult for us, and they’ve still got to get points to maintain their Champions League position.”

Leicester City are third in the Premier League with 56 points after 31 matches - a point above fourth-placed Chelsea and fifth-placed West Ham United.

The Baggies, however, are 19th in the table with 24 points from 31 matches - nine points adrift of safety.

'Now is not the time' - Tuchel dismisses transfer talk amid Haaland links during Chelsea's striker struggles

Amakhosi were hoping to move into the half of the league standings, but they succumbed to a defeat to the Mother City side

Cape Town City claimed their maiden win over Kaizer Chiefs since January 2019 when they recorded a 1-0 victory against the Soweto giants in a PSL match at FNB Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Two goals from Tashreeq Morris and Bradley Ralani inspired the Citizens to a victory, while Kearyn Baccus' second-half goal proved to be a mere consolation for Amakhosi.

Amakhosi were keen to snap their three-match winless run having recorded three successive draws against Stellenbosch FC, Horoya AC and Baroka FC.

Coach Gavin Hunt named an unchanged team with Lebogang Manyama, who netted in Chiefs' last game against Baroka, keeping his place in the starting line-up.

On the other hand, the Citizens were determined to win two matches in a row in the league for the first time since January 2021 having thrashed SuperSport United 3-0 on April 10.

Mpho Makola was rewarded with a starting berth by coach Jan Olde Riekerink after the former Orlando Pirates playmaker netted against SuperSport having come on as a substitute.

The Citizens pressed Amakhosi in the opening proceedings and Morris had two good chances, but he was denied by goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune.

Before the City centre forward ballooned his effort over the crossbar from inside the box after Chiefs had failed to clear Terrence Mashego's well-taken corner-kick.

Morris did make amends for failing to convert his two chances as he hit the back of the net when he turned home Mashego's cross to hand City a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute.

It was nearly 2-0 to City, but Khune reacted quickly and snatched the ball before it could cross the goal-line after the Bafana Bafana international had denied Fagrie Lakay from close range.

Chiefs did have a rare chance just before half-time when Siyabonga Ngezana's acrobatic effort was finger-tipped over the crossbar by keeper Peter Leeuwenburgh and the score was 1-0 to City at the interval.

Baccus was introduced by Hunt prior to the start of the second-half as the hosts looked to take control of the match and push for the equalising goal.

However, Chiefs conceded again eight minutes before the hour-mark when Ralani beat Khune with a deflected shot to make it 2-0 to City with Lakay grabbing the assist.

The Citizens then sat back and they allowed Amakhosi to dominate the game and Samir Nurkovic's effort was cleared from the goal-line by Tariq Fielies with Leeuwenburgh well-beaten.

The hosts did pull one back in the 67th minute when Baccus headed home Ngezana's well-taken cross to make it 2-1 and the Soweto giants pushed for the equalising goal.

City were under siege in the closing stages as Ngezana hit the side-netting and Leeuwenburgh produced a brilliant diving save to deny Njabulo Blom.

The visitors then stood firm at the back and ultimately, the match ended in a 2-1 victory in favour of City, who remained seventh on the league standings and they will face Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila on Saturday.

While Chiefs remained 10th on the standings ahead of their titanic encounter against Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday.
