The VAR Review: Ziyech red card explained, disallowed Arsenal goal, Saka penalty

Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.

Slovakia are next in action against Sweden in Saint Petersburg on Friday, while Poland travel to Seville to take on Spain on Saturday.

Slovakia record a fine win over 10-man Poland in their Euro 2020 Group E opener in Saint Petersburg. An own goal from Wojciech Szczesny put Stefan Tarkovic's men in front after a brilliant run and strike from Robert Mak caused the mistake from the Poland keeper. The Poles responded almost immediately after half-time as Karol Linetty turned in Maciej Rybus' cross from the left flank. The game took another twist when Grzegorz Krychowiak was dismissed for two bookable offences. Slovakia seized the initiative and Milan Skriniar notched the decisive goal in the contest with a firm strike from 12 yards to secure the win for his team.

90' + 5' FULL-TIME: POLAND 1-2 SLOVAKIA

90' + 3' SAVE! Lewandowski fends off two Slovakia defenders in the box, but has no room to strike. He offloads to Swiderski, who takes on the shot on his left foot, but sends his attempt straight at Dubravka.

90' + 1' CHANCE! Bednarek latches on to a low ball into the box from Frankowski and mis-kicks his first effort. However, he gets a second opportunity on his left foot, but he curls his shot inches wide of the post. Agony for Poland.

90' There will be four minutes of added time.

88' CLOSE! Moder whips a perfect ball in from the left flank from the resulting corner, but no one in a white shirt can connect with a header, including Lewandowski, with the goal gaping.

88' Moder has a run down the left flank and angles a cross into the box. It takes a deflection and travels towards the net, forcing Dubravka to turn it over the bar.

85' OVER! Puchacz latches on to a clearance from Slovakia defence following Klich's corner, but the full-back can only hammer his 20-yard effort on the half-volley over the bar.

84' Lewandowski puts Satka under pressure down the right flank and wins a corner for Poland. They need to make the most of these opportunities.

82' Time is running out for Poland to force the issue. Since being reduced to 10 men, Sousa's men have not carried a threat in the final third.

81' Hamsik has been involved in three of Slovakia's five goals at the European Championships (one goal, two assists).

77' Bednarek rises to attack a cross from Klich into the box, but he can only nod the ball straight into the grasp of Dubravka.

75' Poland became just the second side to score an own goal (Wojciech Szczesny) and have a player sent off (Grzegorz Krychowiak) in a single European Championship game after Czechoslovakia versus Netherlands in 1976.

72' Linetty tees up Zielinski for a drive at goal from 20 yards, but the Napoli man lifts his effort well over the bar.

68' CHANCE! Kucka breaks through the Poland midfield towards the edge of the box. He spots Haraslin in space and offloads to his team-mate. The midfielder strikes at goal, but it takes a deflection on its way wide of the target.

66' Krychowiak is just the third player to be sent off for Poland at a major tournament (European Championship or World Cup) after Radislaw Sobolewski against Germany at the 2006 World Cup and Wojciech Szczesny against Greece at EURO 2012.

64' Pekarik tries to release Duda in the box, but the forward takes a heavy first touch and cannot prevent the ball travelling out for a goal-kick.

62' OFF! Krychowiak is dismissed for two bookable offences. The midfielder lunges in late on Hromada and is given his second yellow and then a red by the referee. Poland are down to 10 men.

60' Slovakia are attempting to take the pace out of the game to combat Poland's brisk start. Tarkovic's men need to find their feet.

58' OVER! Lewandowksi strikes the free-kick at goal with power on his right foot, but it deflects off Skriniar's head and travels over the bar.

57' Rybus is brought down on the edge of the box by Kucka, presenting Poland with a great opportunity to threaten from the resulting free-kick.

56' Linetty’s equaliser for Poland came just 32 seconds into the second-half, the second fastest second-half goal scored in a European Championship game after Marcel Coras for Romania vs Germany in 1984 (21 seconds).

54' SHOT! Haraslin is played into space down the right flank by Pekarik. He takes a touch inside on his left foot before angling a strike at goal that travels just over the bar.

53' OVER! Zielinski collects on the right flank and floats a cross into the box. Glik rises to head at goal, but he plants his effort over the top.

52' Jozwiak has a run down the right flank and his side win a corner as Hubocan has to send the ball behind.

51' SAVE! Klich makes a run down the right flank and cuts a low ball into the middle. Linetty gets into the box to connect with a strike, but he sends a tame effort straight at Dubravka.

48' Poland have come out for the second half full of energy and putting Slovakia on the back foot. The goal has given Sousa and his team belief.

46' We're back under way at Saint Petersburg.

Poland have been underwhelming in the first half and easily exposed by Slovakia on the break. Paulo Sousa has a big team-talk ahead of him to get a response out of his players for the second half.

An own goal from Wojciech Szczesny has handed Slovakia a 1-0 lead over Poland at the break in their Euro 2020 Group E clash. Robert Mak made an incisive run into the box before striking at goal to force the mistake from the Poland keeper, breaking the deadlock in the 18th minute. Slovakia deserve their lead, having played the better the football. However, it's only job half done for Stefan Tarkovic and his team.

45' + 1' HALF-TIME: POLAND 0-1 SLOVAKIA

45' There will be one minute of added time.

44' Hamsik takes possession on the right flank and runs at the Poland defence. He lines up an ambitious strike at goal that fails to penetrate the wall of white shirts on the edge of the box.

42' WIDE! Rybus works an offload inside to Lewandowski in the box. He takes a touch, only to slice his left-footed strike wide of the target.

41' Duda has space to roam in the Poland half, but he sends an awful pass out to the left flank with team-mates in support on the edge of the box.

39' Slovakia have been the better team as we approach the interval. They deserve their lead, but there is still plenty of work ahead for Tarkovic and his men.

37' The game continues to open up. Linetty is the latest player to have a crack at goal from distance, only to slice his effort wide of the target.

37' Space opens up for Hamsik to have a drive at goal. He stops 20 yards out and goes for a left-footed effort that he sends comfortably wide.

35' WIDE! Zielinski tries to find space in the final third and he goes for a strike at goal that he drags wide of the right post. Poland need more from their creative players.

34' OVER! A mis-communication between Hromada and Kucka allows Krychowiak to take possession. He hammers a strike towards goal that just travels over the bar.

33' Hamsik offloads towards Pekarik down the right flank and he floats a cross into the box for Kucka to attack. He rises to connect with a header, but he nods his attempt straight at Szczesny.

30' Hubocan feeds Hamsik on the left edge of the Poland penalty area, but his drive is well blocked by Glik .

28' Although a harsh one - Szczesny has become the first ever goalkeeper to score an own goal at the European Championship finals.

27' OVER! Kucka latches on to a poor clearance from the Poland defence and takes a touch before striking at goal in his right foot. He unleashes a good shot that just travels over the bar.

26' Slovakia counter at the other end of the field and Haraslin makes a neat move into the box. He gets crowded out before he can shoot, although Pekarik takes on an effort from distance that is deflected behind.

26' Jozwiak drops his shoulder down the right flank and sends a dangerous low cross into the box. Lewandowski cannot connect on the slide before Rybus sees his effort blocked by Kucka tracking back.

24' Slovakia can play the game on their terms now. It will be tricky for Poland to put them under pressure, playing into the strength of Stankovic's side.

16' Zielinski takes the resulting free-kick, but his delivery sails over the players in the area and eases the pressure on the Slovakia defence.

15' Zielinski has been active in the early stages and he draws a foul from Kucka in the final third.

14' WIDE! Duda collects on the left flank and has a run at the Poland defence by cutting inside. He shoots with power on his right foot, but his effort just travels wide of the left post, striking the side-netting.

13' Hubocan almost plays Dubravka into trouble at the back with a short backpass, but the keeper reacts to clear ahead of Jozwiak.

10' Satka puts his body on the line at the back post to clear Jozwiak's cross away from the lurking presence of Rybus on the charge.

9' Kucka brings down Klich on the right flank, handing Poland a free-kick. Linetty angles a cross into the box, but Dubravka comes through a crowd of players to clear the danger.

7' Poland have made a bright start to the contest and are looking to bring Lewandowski into the game whenever possible.

5' Zielinski offloads to Lewandowski in space in the box. He turns to shoot on his right foot, but Satka makes another important block.

4' Lewandowski takes possession in the final third and he unleashes a strike at goal that is blocked by Satka on the edge of the Slovakia box.

2' Hromada is brought down by Krychowiak and the referee awards a free-kick to Slovakia. Duda lifts a delivery into the box that is headed across the face of goal by Skriniar, but Lewandowski is on hand to clear.

1' We're under way in Saint Petersburg.

Only one of the previous eight matches between Poland and Slovakia has ended in a draw (3 wins for Poland, 4 for Slovakia). Their last meeting ended in a 2-0 win for Slovakia back in November 2013, courtesy of goals from Juraj Kucka and Robert Mak, the latter’s first for the national team.

Slovakia have made one change to their side from their draw against Austria in their final warm-up game. Hamsik returns to the fold and will start behind Duda, who leads the line. Ivan Schranz makes way from the team and does not make the bench.

Poland have made six changes to their side that drew against Iceland in their final warm-up game. Bereszynski, Rybus and Bednarek all come into the backline for Sousa's men. Linettey and Klich get the starts in the middle of the park alongside Krychowiak. Jozwiak gets the nod to play alongside Zielinski and Lewandowski in the final third.

SLOVAKIA SUBS: Denis Varo, Jan Gregus, Vladimir Weiss, Tomas Suslov, Laszlo Benes, Dusan Kuciak, Patrik Hrosovsky, David Hancko, Michal Duris, Stanislav Lobotka, Marek Rodak, Martin Koscelnik.

SLOVAKIA (4-2-3-1): Martin Dubravka; Peter Pekarik, Lubomir Satka, Milan Skriniar, Tomas Hubocan; Juraj Kucka, Jakub Hromada; Lukas Haraslin, Marek Hamsik, Robert Mak; Ondrej Duda.

POLAND SUBS: Pawel Dawidowicz, Tomasz Kedziora, Kacper Kozlowski, Karol Swiderski, Lukasz Skorupski, Jakub Moder, Przemyslaw Placheta, Przemyslaw Frankowski, Lukasz Fabianski, Jakub Swierczok, Michal Helik, Tymoteusz Puchacz.

POLAND (4-3-3): Wojciech Szczesny; Bartosz Bereszynski, Kamil Glik, Jan Bednarek, Maciej Rybus; Karol Linetty, Grzegorz Krychowiak, Mateusz Klich; Kamil Jozwiak, Robert Lewandowski, Piotr Zielinski.

Slovakia reached the Euros at the expense of Northern Ireland in their playoff clash courtesy of a Michal Duris' winner in extra-time. Stefan Tarkovic's men were in the competition five years ago and reached the round of 16 where they were soundly beaten by Germany. It was a learning experience for Slovakia and they will have been richer for it. They carry a five-match unbeaten run into the Euros, although one of those was a victory which came against Russia in a World Cup qualifier in March. Slovakia need to be flawless today.

Poland are not in great form entering the competition, winning only one of their last seven games. They drew against Russia and Iceland in their warm-up matches, while their last competitive action resulted in a 2-1 defeat to England in a World Cup qualifier. Tournament football tends to throw the form book out of the window and Poland will be determined to make a similar run to their last experience at the Euros where they reached the quarter-finals. However, Paulo Sousa and his men need a good start this evening in a competitive group.

Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the Euro 2020 Group E clash between Poland and Slovakia in Saint Petersburg.

Hudson-Odoi: Ghana FA boss Okraku delivers update on Chelsea star chase

The football association president has spoken on the Black Stars' pursuit of the 20-year-old Premier League player

Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku reveals the national team is looking to have more engagements with Chelsea attacker Callum Hudson-Odoi about his much-talked-about potential switch of international allegiance.

Born to Ghanaian parents in the United Kingdom, the 20-year-old plays for his country of birth England, for whom he currently has three appearances to his name.

The winger is currently back in Ghana for holiday, having gone ahead to meet President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, minister for sports Mustapha Ussif and Football Association President Kurt Okraku, heightening speculation about an imminent switch.

“I mean I spoke with Callum before he got to Ghana, and we promised to speak again when we meet in Ghana," Okraku told TV3.

"We have met, we’ve had discussions that centred beyond playing for Ghana, and he has a crazy ambition of helping kids in Ghana and this is what excites me the most.

“We are looking forward to working with Odoi and his family and many other players who are interested in representing their country.

“We have a lot of them like that, we are talking to the technical team and the political authorities in getting them to play for Ghana."

By Fifa's updated regulations on eligibility last September, the winger will be eligible to pledge the rest of his international future with Ghana in November next year, provided he does not add any more caps for The Three Lions.

“I think obviously when you’re young, you have the opportunity to play for England throughout all the years, from under 15 to under 16 all the way up,” the Champions League winner recently said.

“When they obviously gave me the opportunity to come I was in the country already. It’s something that I already had in my mind, set on already playing for England.”

“So it was the thing obviously choosing Ghana or England, and at the end of the day I said I always had the right people around me who always advise me – what’s right, what’s wrong. England came and I said 'Yeah, let me go and play for my country.

“But I said Ghana is my home as well, so we’ll see, we’ll see. You’ll never know, so.”

The winger is one of four England-born players on Ghana’s radar, the others being Eddie Nketiah of Arsenal, Tariq Lamptey of Brighton & Hove Albion and Kwadwo Baah of Watford.

Poland's Szczesny makes Euros history by becoming first goalkeeper credited with own goal

The Juventus shot-stopper set an unfortunate record in Monday's match against Slovakia

Wojciech Szczesny made some unfortunate history on Monday as he became the first goalkeeper to ever be responsible for an own goal at the Euros.

Szczesny and Poland went behind in the first half of Monday's meeting with Slovakia, their first match of the competition.

It took just 18 minutes for them to concede, with Szczesny becoming the first goalkeeper to be charged with an own goal in the competition's history.

What happened?

The goal was created by Slovakia's Robert Mak, who drove down the left-hand side of the field while beating two Polish defenders in the process.

As he broke in on goal, Mak fired a shot, only to see if smash off the near post.

Fortunately for him, it bounced back off Szczesny and in, with Mak's efforts being rewarded even if he wouldn't be credited with the goal.

That unfortunate honour instead went to Szczesny, who was credited with the second own goal of the Euros so far.

Coincidentally, both have been scored by Juventus players, with Merih Demiral responsible for the opening goal of the tournament in Italy's win over Turkey.

LIVE Transfer Talk: Arsenal set to give Martinelli new deal

The former England striker thinks that the PSG superstar is already a global phenomenon but will need longevity to be considered one of the best ever

Gary Lineker thinks that Kylian Mbappe can reach the same levels as Cristiano Ronaldo but believes that Lionel Messi's talents put him on a different level to what anyone else in the game can hope to achieve.

Having won the golden boot for the third time in a row in Ligue 1 and enjoyed another stellar season, the 22-year-old heads into the European Championship as one of the game's top forward players.

And Lineker feels that Mbappe, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid in the summer, is already a global phenomenon and may need to move to the Liga giants to further his career.

What's been said?

"Mbappe is already a global superstar who is most likely to jump in the shoes of Ronaldo, but not Messi - he can do things that others simply can't," Lineker told Goal.

"Talent-wise, there's no question. It's more about whether he has the same drive to sustain his career over 17, 19 years like the two of them (Ronaldo and Messi). It's quite remarkable and it takes something special to do that.

"Ability-wise, he could go on to do those things with big rumours about Real Madrid. Does he need to move on from PSG to realise his ambitions of greatness? Maybe, I don't know, but I don't think it will distract him from the tournament itself.

"It always is about the next generation. We saw it in the Champions League but I think it was more that Barcelona and Juventus have weak teams in transition at the moment.

"Messi, this calendar year, has scored more and got more assists than anyone else. Ronaldo is still banging in loads of goals. They are phenomenal.

"We saw Erling Haaland and Mbappe coming through in the Champions League and we will see it again at the Euros, with Mbappe. Hopefully, with one or two England lads like Phil Foden, Mason Mount and Jadon Sancho [also doing well].

"I love Sancho and I think people will be surprised how good he is without watching as much foreign football. I am excited about Jude Bellingham, Nicolo Barella as well. There's also a lot of quality within the France team."

Who is in the France squad & who do they play at the Euros?

France, who are being widely tipped to go far in the tournament, get their Euro 2020 campaign underway with a tough test against Germany on June 15.

Didier Deschamps' side then take on Hungary in their second fixture of Group F, before finishing the group phase against Portugal on June 23.

Liverpool Urged to Sign ex-Monaco Goalkeeper Danijel Subasic on Free Transfer

The legendary goalkeeper tactician alleged that the sacked manager did not get on well with his players during his time at the club

Former Kaizer Chiefs head coach Joseph Setlhodi has claimed Gavin Hunt orchestrated his downfall at the Premier Soccer League side.

Hunt saw his three-year deal terminated before the 2020/21 season ended and Setlhodi has alleged that the coach did not get on well with players and that is why the Soweto club struggled.

"In football, in order to get the results and to win trophies, you first have to win the players," the Chiefs legend told Soccer Laduma

"Put the players into your pocket and zip the pocket so that you know that you are safe. But if you go alone and talk bad about the players, they will destroy you. I’m talking from experience, and I know exactly what I am talking about.

"Look at what happened at Chiefs [under Hunt], it is not because those players are not good that they have been performing badly like they have been doing, but it was because of the attitude of the coach. As a coach, you don’t have to listen to the players too often, but they have a right to talk to you and raise their issues.

"You don’t have to overlook them, and you have to make them feel that they are part of you."

In explaining why Chiefs struggled, Setlhodi gave an example of goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune and Lebogang Manyama who were not in their usual top form.

"The way I see it, there were very few players who wanted to play for Hunt. Look, when you watched [Lebogang] Manyama playing, you could sense that he was not himself," he added.

"If you looked at [Itumeleng] Khune between the sticks, he was not himself, because already he knew that next season he wouldn’t be in the menu of Gavin Hunt. I’m talking about the senior players that can change things and win the game for you. I will tell you an example about myself when I took over at Kaizer Chiefs as a coach in 1981.

"I was a player and playing with the very same players that I coached. At that time, I was a reserve goalkeeper to Peta Bala'c. Whatever I did, I did it with the players. I was not alone in making things."

Hunt was appointed Amakhosi head coach in September 2020 and, despite the PSL struggles, he managed to help them qualify for the Caf Champions League semi-finals.

All the signs are good for Antonio Conte's Tottenham

The Ice-cream Makers recently sealed a three-year deal with the Taifa Stars left-footed star as they beefed up their squad for the new season

Azam FC have come out to defend their decision to sign defender Edward Manyama from Mainland Premier League side Ruvu Shooting.

Three days ago, the Ice-Cream Makers had announced the signing of the Taifa Stars left-back after he penned a three-year contract and he will play for the team in the new 2021-22 season.

While there were reports that Azam rivals Simba SC and Yanga SC were also interested in his services, the Chamazi-based club through their Chief Executive Officer Abdulkarim Amin ‘Popat’ has explained the reason they signed the player is that he has proven on several instances that he is a good player even before joining Ruvu Shooting from Namungo FC.

What has been said?

“While at Namungo, he helped them to reach the finals of Azam Sports Federation Cup last season, and after his switch to Ruvu Shooting, he maintained his consistency,” Amin said as quoted by Daily News.

Amin has further explained Azam are in the market for more signings as recommended by head coach George Lwandamina as they are targeting to build a formidable squad for local and Caf competitions.

“There are some positions which the coach has proposed to be covered by foreign players and as the management; we want to do our part to make sure that his needs are fulfilled,” Amin continued.

"If there are requirements to sign domestic players, the coach will brief us to see what we can do.”

What did Simba say on Manyama?

In a recent interview with Goal, Simba official Barbara Gonzalez openly dismissed claims they were in the race to sign Manyama before Azam got his services.

“Manyama who?” Gonzalez posed a question to Goal when asked whether Simba had tabled a bid to sign the player.

“Simba did not have any plans to sign Edward [Manyama], if we were really interested then we could have talked to his club immediately after we played against them, but I want to put it clear that he was not part of our targets and if I give you the list from the coach [for new players to sign], even his name is not there.”

Manyama, who has managed only one cap for the Taifa Stars, has also featured for several teams in the Mainland League including JKT Ruvu Stars, Namungo, and Yanga.

Italy boss Mancini faces welcome 'big problem' selecting Euro 2020 squad

The striker is at the centre of controversy and has apologised for losing his temper

Austria star Marko Arnautovic has denied being a racist while apologising for making an offensive slur in his side's win over North Macedonia.

Arnautovic scored in Austria's 3-1 victory on Sunday and was seen gesturing in the direction of North Macedonia's Ezgjan Alioski, allegedly saying: "I'm f***ing your Albanian mother".

The striker has been accused of using a racially-charged word during his confrontation with Alioski, but Arnautovic has denied it while also apologising for the "heated" incident.

What did Arnautovic have to say?

"There were some heated words yesterday in the emotions of the game for which I would like to APOLOGIZE - especially to my friends from North Macedonia and Albania," he wrote on Instagram.

"I would like to say one thing very clearly: I AM NOT A RACIST! I have friends in almost every country and I stand for diversity. Everyone who knows me is aware of that."

The meaning behind the words

The use of language reportedly dates back to the Kosovo War, with Arnautovic, whose father is Serbian, targeting Alioski, who is of Albanian origins.

Arnautovic allegedly used an anti-Albanian slur towards Egzon Bejtulai before then celebrating his goal by yelling towards Alioski, only stopping after being restrained by team-mate David Alaba.

There is historic tension between Serbia and Albania, while Serbia and North Macedonia have long had a tense relationship.

The politics surrounding these countries were also a major talking point at the 2018 World Cup, when Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri were fined £7,600 each after the two Swiss stars, who have Albanian links, celebrated by putting their hands together to form a double-headed eagle representing the Albanian flag during a game against Serbia.

The Bayer Leverkusen forward netted from nearly 50 yards to stun the crowd at Hampden Park and set his country towards victory in Group D

It may only be day four of the European Championship, but goal of the tournament may have already been sewn up by Czech Republic striker Patrik Schick.

The Bayer Leverkusen forward scored from practically on the halfway line in the Czechs' opening game of Group D against Scotland, lobbing goalkeeper David Marshall from approximately 50 yards.

It was Schick's second goal of the game, and stunned the crowd at Hampden Park who had hoped to see Scotland get a good result in their first major tournament match for 23 years.

What happened?

Schick had already got on the scoresheet just before half-time with a well-placed header putting Czech Republic in front - but that was nothing compared to his second, scored on 52 minutes.

After a hopeful long-range effort from Scotland's Jack Hendry was blocked, the ball was played out to Schick who instinctively took a shot just as the ball crossed the halfway line.

The effort had the perfect placement and power, curling from outside David Marshall's right-hand post as the Scotland goalkeeper backpeddled from his position well off his goal line.

The shot went flying over the Derby keeper's head and into the back of the net without bouncing, leaving the veteran number one helpless and tangled in the back of his own net amid his desperate attempts to stop the shot.

At 49.7 yards, Schick's second goal was the furthest distance from which a strike has been scored on record at the European Championship since 1980.

'What a Schickener'

The extraordinary goal prompted a huge online response.

The Indian national team gaffer has acknowledged their Afghan counterparts' confidence on the ball...

India take on Afghanistan in the final Group E game in the second round 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup joint qualifiers at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday.

The Blue Tigers' 2-0 win over Bangladesh on June 7 means that a draw against Afghanistan will be enough for India to progress to the third round of the Asian Cup qualifiers. However, head coach Igor Stimac has shrugged off suggestions that his men will play for a point.

What Igor Stimac said?

"I need to say that I don't know any coach or any team who would come out playing for a draw. Even that might seem to be a situation when you are facing much better sides. Then, you need to drop and defend for your life and wait for one, two or three chances to counter-attack like against Qatar. But, we are not going out to play for a draw. Rather, we will go out to win it," he said.

"As a coach, I have tried to prepare our team in the best possible way - to keep them motivated. Wearing the national team jersey is the biggest motivation for any player, and it comes with a huge responsibility. You know how big a population is backing us, and whoever is wearing the Indian shirt has that unique chance to make the 1.4 billion people proud."

'We cannot take Afghanistan lightly'

India are currently placed third in the group with six points from seven matches. If the Blue Tigers lose to Afghanistan they will be relegated to the fourth position. The return leg meeting had ended in a 1-1 draw.

"Afghanistan are full of players with international experience, and most of the players are playing in foreign leagues. You can recognise it when you gauge their confidence on the ball. But at the same time, we see our chance and need to go out on the pitch and play good football and to make sure we finish this tournament on a winning note," the Croatian expressed.

England predicted lineup vs Hungary - Nations League

The Portugal forward was asked about his next move as the national side prepare to take on Hungary in their first group game of Euro 2020

Cristiano Ronaldo has said whatever happens this summer will be "for the best" amid reports linking him with a move away from Juventus.

After a difficult season with the Serie A side the Portugal international has been linked with a transfer, with Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United both touted as potential destinations.

The 36-year-old refused to commit his future to the Italian side as he prepares to face Hungary in Portugal’s opening game at Euro 2020.

What was said?

Ronaldo was asked if the speculation linking him with moves to Man Utd and PSG would affect him at the tournament.

He replied: “I have been playing at the highest level for many years this doesn’t faze me, maybe if I was 18 or 19 I might have had some sleepless nights, but I'm 36. Whatever comes will be for the best, regardless of staying at Juve or being transferred.

“The crucial thing now is the Euros, it is my fifth Euros, but for me it’s like my first Euros. We want to play a good match with good thoughts from the first to the last match.”

Why are there reports he could leave?

Ronaldo has been heavily linked with a move away from Turin in recent months, with it suggested that the Bianconeri are ready to cash in on a prized asset before he becomes a free agent in 2022.

Goal undertstands that Juve officials are convinced that the Portuguese is exploring his options ahead of the summer transfer window.

What else was said?

During the press conference held in Budapest ahead of their opening Group F game Ronaldo was asked about how his form compares to when he was younger.

He replied: “On a personal level I’m not the same player I was 18 or 10 years ago, or even five years ago - we keep adjusting.

“The most intelligent thing about a football player is the ability to adjust. I’m more mature and if a player wants to play for many, many years then they have to be able to adjust.

"The numbers speak for themselves, from 18 to 36 I’ve learnt to adjust and adapt and I‘ve always been able to win and on an individual and collective level with the teams I have played for. I have adjusted all along in my career.”

'It was damn nice to see him smile' - Schmeichel offers encouraging Eriksen update while criticising UEFA restart call

The Denmark goalkeeper says he has been to see his stricken team-mate in hospital after his on-pitch collapse on Saturday afternoon

Kasper Schmeichel has offered an encouraging update on Christian Eriksen while criticising UEFA's decision to restart Denmark's clash with Finland.

Eriksen received emergency on-field treatment from Denmark's medical team after suffering cardiac arrest 41 minutes into the Euro 2020 fixture in Copenhagen on Saturday afternoon.

The Inter midfielder stopped breathing and had to be resuscitated before leaving Parken Stadium on a stretcher, and was subsequently declared to be in a stable condition at a local hospital.

What's been said?

Schmeichel has since been to visit Eriksen and says it gave him great relief to see his team-mate in high spirits after an anxious wait for news on his wellbeing.

“It was damn nice to see him smile and laugh and be himself and just feel that he is there," the Denmark goalkeeper told broadcaster DR. "It was a great experience and something that has helped me a lot.”

Schmeichel calls out UEFA

Denmark were given the choice to resume their game against Finland at 19:30 or at 12:00 on Sunday after witnessing Eriksen's cardiac arrest.

UEFA announced that the game would recommence on Saturday evening after consulting with both sets of players, but Schmeichel felt that they were rushed into making a decision.

Denmark ended up losing the game 1-0, with the Leicester City star saying: “We were put in a position I don’t think we should have been put in. It probably required that someone above us had said that it was not the time to make a decision and maybe should wait for the next day."

What next for Denmark?

Denmark must now try to pick themselves up ahead of a crucial meeting with Belgium on Thursday.

Kasper Hjulmand's side will need to pull off an upset in order to stay in the hunt for a place in the round of 16, with a final group stage outing against Russia set to follow on June 21.

“We’re still in the tournament. Now, we have to try to see if we can win this and do it for Christian and do it for all the fans who sat with us and were just as powerless in the situation as we were,” Schmeichel said. “I have no doubt that this team has the unity, the strength to be able to come together and go out and do something special.”

Pep Guardiola jokes about his 'the Harry Kane team' comments

The Arsenal full-back was unavailable for the meeting with the Czech Republic after picking up a knock in training

Steve Clarke is hopeful Kieran Tierney will be fit for Scotland's clash with England after missing their Euro 2020 opener through injury.

Tierney was expected to be one of Scotland's key players at the European Championships, having firmly established himself as one of the top full-backs in the Premier League at Arsenal.

However the 24-year-old was a surprise omission from Clarke's squad to face the Czech Republic in their first Group D fixture on Monday, and the head coach has now offered an explanation for his absence.

What's been said?

Clarke says Tierney is recovering from a knock that he picked up in training last week, but is optimistic that he can return in time for Scotland's crunch encounter against England on Friday.

"He's had a niggle during the week," the 57-year-old manager told BBC Sport. "He's not ready for this one, but hopefully the next one."

Tierney's record for Scotland

Tierney will be a big miss for Scotland after featuring in both of their warm-up games against the Netherlands and Luxembourg earlier this month.

Those two outings saw the Gunners star increase his haul of caps to 21, having initially made his international debut as a teenager in 2016.

Who else has missed out?

The other most notable absentee from Clarke's starting XI was Southampton frontman Che Adams, who has had to make do with a place on the bench with Queens Park Rangers striker Lyndon Dykes and Celtic's Ryan Christie leading the line.

The Scotland boss says his decision was based on the fact Dykes performed well against the Czech Republic in their UEFA Nations League win last year before linking up to great effect with Christie against Serbia in the European Championship playoffs.

"Lyndon was a very, very influential player against the Czech Republic in September, him and Ryan were excellent against Serbia and deserve the chance to play here again," said Clarke.

Ancelotti: Vinicius not at fault for provoking fouls

The striker reserved special praise for those appearing at the European Championship for the first time in a Three Lions shirt at the weekend

Harry Kane hailed England's major tournament debutants after their opening Euro 2020 game against Croatia on Sunday, insisting "they did their country proud".

England gained revenge over the nation that dumped them out of the 2018 World Cup at the semi-final stage thanks to Raheem Sterling's neat finish in the 57th minute at Wembley.

Kalvin Phillips set up the goal to cap a superb all-round display, while Phil Foden, Mason Mount, Declan Rice and Tyrone Mings also shone after being trusted to represent the Three Lions in the European Championship for the first time.

What's been said?

Kane paid tribute to all five men when asked to assess Phillips' all-action display by beIN Sports , as he stated: "He has been brilliant. He has just come off the back of a shoulder injury as well, he has been good in training and working hard to be fit for the first game.

“Obviously he was selected and did a fantastic job and there were a few guys out there playing their first game for England in a major tournament and they did their country proud.”

Kane addresses his role in Croatia win

Kane started through the middle for England against Croatia with Foden and Sterling alongside him as a part of a front three, but he was often seen dropping deeper to get involved in the build-up play instead of making runs in behind.

The forward says his aim was to free up space for the Three Lions' other attacking players to run beyond the opposition defence - a role he has gotten used to at club level with Tottenham.

“It has always been a part of my game,” he added. "Sometimes when I drop deep it allows space for the wingers or the midfielders to run in behind so it is always about doing my bit for the team, if it means dropping deep, I will drop deep. If it means staying high, I will stay high.

“We have got fantastic players on the ball and fantastic players in behind, you saw that with Raheem’s goal. We had a couple of runners and he got in and finished nicely.

“(It is) a great start, we know we have got a long way to go still but you always want to start with a win. It is a great building block for the rest of the tournament.”

Kane on Southgate's selection

All the pre-match discussion was dominated by Southgate's decision to start Sterling and Kieran Trippier in winger and full-back roles on the left-hand side of the pitch, with Jadon Sancho and Ben Chilwell ultimately missing out on a place in the squad.

Jack Grealish was also omitted from the first XI despite his impressive displays in England's warm-up games, but Kane says the final result justified Southgate's preferred set-up.

“That is why he is doing his job and the fans are debating – that is part of football,” said the Three Lions captain.

“We have got a great squad and you can understand everyone has got their own opinions on who should play but we had a great team performance and it is important we use the whole squad throughout the tournament, it isn’t going to be the same XI every week.”

LIVE: Scotland vs Czech Republic

Scotland have won each of their last three matches against Czech Republic, their longest current winning run against any of the other 23 nations qualified for Euro 2020. It’s the first meeting between both sides at a major tournament (World Cup or European Championship).

Jaroslav Silhavy names an unchanged line-up from their win against Albania. West Ham duo Soucek and Coufal start for the visitors in a line-up which also includes the familiar face of former Chelsea centre-back Kalas. Schick leads the line as he gets the nod ahead of Krmencik for the trip to Hampden Park.

Perhaps the biggest news for the Scots is that Kieran Tierney misses out today through injury. Clarke opts for four changes in total. Cooper replaces Declan Gallagher and Hendry comes in for the injured Tierney at the back. In midfield, Armstrong is preferred ahead of McGregor and further forward Adams makes way for the inclusion of Christie.

SUBS: Michal Krmencik, Adam Hlozek, Matej Vydra, Tomas Pekhart, Jakub Brabec, Antonin Barak, David Zima, Petr Sevcik, Tomas Holes, Ales Mandous, Pavel Kaderabek, Ales Mateju.

CZECH REPUBLIC (4-2-3-1): Tomas Vaclik; Jan Boril, Tomas Kalas, Ondrej Celustka, Vladimir Coufal; Tomas Soucek, Alex Kral; Jakub Jankto, Vladimir Darida, Lukas Masopust; Patrik Schick.

SUBS: Che Adams, Scott McKenna, Billy Gilmour, Kevin Nisbet, Jon McLaughlin, James Forrest, David Turnbull, Ryan Fraser, Callum McGregor, Craig Gordon, Greg Taylor, Nathan Patterson.

SCOTLAND (3-5-2): David Marshall; Jack Hendry, Liam Cooper, Grany Hanley; Andrew Robertson, Scott McTominay, John McGinn, Stuart Armstrong, Stephen O’Donnell; Ryan Christie, Lyndon Dykes.

Czech Republic’s summer friendlies got off to a poor start as they were dispatched of 4-0 by Italy. A 3-1 victory over Albania, however, will give the visitors confidence coming into the game at Hampden Park today. A runners-up finish to Germany at Euro 1996, followed by semi-final and quarter-final appearances in 2004 and 2012 prove that the Czechs are more than capable of holding their own in this tournament.

This fixture marks Scotland’s first match at a major tournament since the 1998 World Cup. The hosts qualified for this tournament courtesy of back-to-back victories on penalties over both Israel and Serbia. Steve Clarke’s team will be satisfied with their pre-tournament preparations, having played out a 2-2 draw with the Netherlands before beating Luxembourg 1-0.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the Euro 2020 Group D clash between Scotland and Czech Republic at Hampden Park.

Harambee Stars' Matasi seeks public help to offset hospital bills after accident

The experienced goalkeeper was recently involved in a car accident while travelling across the country with his son and wife

Harambee Stars and St George SC goalkeeper Patrick Matasi has reached out to members of the public to help him settle his hospital bill.

Matasi - together with his wife and son - were involved in a road accident at Lessos on the Kapsabet-Nakuru Highway a few weeks ago while travelling back to Nairobi.

The former Posta Rangers goalkeeper was treated in Lessos before being transferred to Kakamega, where he and his family are recovering.

The goalkeeper was released a day after the accident, but his wife and son required additional medical attention, and it is because of their mounting bills that he has come forward to seek financial assistance.

"Hello friends, as I had already shared with you, my wife and son were scheduled for surgery, which they did. My wife was operated on on 7th June while my son underwent his surgery today," a statement on Matasi's Facebook page read.

"As you all know, in these types of situations, bills spiral and sometimes become overwhelming, especially in this case where it's three people that require medical attention.

"This is why I am requesting for you to support me as I run up and down to ensure all of us are finally healed and get back to our normal lives.

"I understand that times are hard, but whatever amount will be appreciated. Thank you and may God bless you."

Matasi was travelling to the city in order to catch a flight to Adis Ababa and link up with his club teammates before the accident.

He is one of Kenya's most established goalkeepers, although he has not been called up in recent times for national assignments.

Since Sebastien Migne left in 2019, he has not been summoned, with Ian Otieno of Zesco United, Brian Bwire from Kariobangi Sharks, Arnold Origi and Ulizi Stars' Jacktone Odhiambo and James Saruni being the goalkeepers who have enjoyed Harambee Stars call-ups.

The 33-year-old has played for AFC Leopards, Posta Rangers, and Tusker in the Kenyan Premier League before he was signed by the Ethiopian side in 2018.

He was the number one goalkeeper when Kenya fought for a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations slot and was used prominently during the finals in Egypt.

Matasi made his debut for the national team in 2017 and has so far featured in 27 games for Harambee Stars, including the Cecafa finals when Kenya lifted the trophy under Paul Put.

Frank Onyeka: Brentford sign FC Midtjylland midfielder

The ex-chauffer of the Spain goalkeeper has backed the stopper to come good at Old Trafford

Ex-Ghana youth star Baba Sule, who formerly worked as the chauffeur to Spain goalkeeper David De Gea, believes the Manchester United keeper doesn’t need to move to prove he’s at the top of his game.

Following a difficult season at Old Trafford in which he lost his undisputed starting berth to Dean Henderson, De Gea has been linked with a potential United exit this summer.

There have been rumours in the British press that he may be offered to Atletico Madrid in a part-swap deal for Jan Oblak, but De Gea’s former driver doesn’t believe it’s the right time for him to return to Spain.

“He’s still one of the best players,” Baba Sule told Goal. “Footballers [have] bad patches, where you can have a very good year then the next year you cannot progress or continue the good year you had.

“I don’t think it’s necessary for him to come back to Spain now,” he added. “I don’t think so.

“I hope he will come back and be the best goalkeeper – as he is – but I don’t think it’s necessary to him to come to Spain at this time. He still has a contract with Manchester [United].”

De Gea, who was previously part of Atletico Madrid’s youth academy before making his maiden steps in the professional game with the Rojiblancos, has been with the Red Devils since 2011.

He missed the decisive penalty in their Europa League final shootout defeat by Villarreal last month, having previously won the tournament with Atleti in 2010 and United in 2017.

The stopper, who could reach a half-century of Spain caps at the European Championships, may have to wait to add to his international appearances after being unseated by Unai Simon as the country’s No. 1 stopper.

Spain begin their Euro 2020 campaign against Sweden in Sevilla on Monday evening.

Baba Sule, who worked as a chauffeur for De Gea during his time with Atletico’s academy, after his own playing career ended, was a U-17 World Cup champion with Ghana in 1995.

He subsequently moved to Spanish football with Mallorca in 1996, but a combination of injuries and illness problems stymied his progress.

He retired in 2011 after returning to African football with Nigerian clubs Kwara United and Niger Tornadoes.
