LIVE: Preston North End vs Liverpool

That is all for tonight folks, thanks for joining us once again. Goodbye!

Liverpool will find out their next opponents on Saturday, but their attention will quickly turn to the Premier League ahead of their game against Brighton, while Preston will hopefully use tonight's display as a launchpad to improve their Championship fortunes.

Two moments of quality from Minamino and Origi help Liverpool book their place in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup. Preston missed three chances to score in the first 45 minutes, with Maguire, Ledson and Potts all going close, but Liverpool made them pay when they got the opportunity. Minamino converted Williams' cross for the opener, before Origi's scorpion kick doubled his team's advantage. Job done as far as Liverpool are concerned, while Preston will be proud of their efforts.

90' + 3' FULL-TIME - PRESTON 0-2 LIVERPOOL.

90' Three minutes of stoppage time to come at Deepdale.

89' SAVE! Rudd ensures that the score stays at 0-2 as he races off his line to smother a shot from Williams. The right-back had the chance to play in Minamino, but he went for the selfish route and was made to pay.

86' Origi has now been directly involved in 13 goals in his ten starts in the League Cup, scoring 11 and assisting two.

83' McAvoy looks to have played all of his cards by now, and it will take a massive effort from Preston to come back from behind at Deepdale, but time is on their side.

80' Jones drives forward towards the Preston box, but he sees his shot saved by Rudd after failing to generate any power.

75' Phillips' introduction at half-time has been seamless for Liverpool, with the youngster forming a solid partnership with Gomez. The duo have had very little to do so far, but there's every chance they will be put through their paces before full-time.

72' Liverpool forward Minamino now has five goals in as many EFL Cup matches for the Reds!

65' Preston now have 25 minutes to salvage something from this tie, but they will need to dig very deep indeed, with Liverpool looking comfortable in possession like they have done all night.

60' Barkhuizen tries to squeeze his shot into the near post, but Adrian gets into a prime position to deny him.

58' Maguire appears to have had some of his fingers strapped, and he looks fine to continue!

57' The game comes to a halt as Maguire goes down under a challenge from Minamino. It looks like the forward has hurt his hand, and the physios are now on the field to tend to him.

54' CLOSE! Oxlade-Chamberlain thrashes a shot wide of the far post, and Rudd was worried, but the former Southampton man went for power over placement.

51' McAvoy has also got some big decisions to make, with his team doing a fantastic job so far. If he decides to freshen things up, his side may lose their foothold on the game.

49' Liverpool have injected a bit more pace into the game at the start of the second half, but Rudd's only involvement has been to take goal-kicks. If Klopp wants to avoid penalties, he may need to introduce Jota or Firmino in the next ten minutes or so.

48' Minamino wastes a great chance to score after being played in by Oxlade-Chamberlain. The winger latched onto the looping pass but took his eye off the ball and the home side win a goal-kick instead.

46' We are back underway at Deepdale, with just one change being made at the interval.

Liverpool's second-string will no doubt come out firing after a rallying cry from Klopp at the break, and the first ten minutes of the second half are so important for Preston. Hopefully, they can produce more of the same, and we get an end-to-end second 45 minutes.

The referee brings the first half to a close, and overall, that was a disappointing 45 minutes of action. Liverpool have had plenty of possession, but they have not done anything with it, with Preston goalkeeper Rudd a passenger so far. Sadly for Preston, they have wasted their chances to score, with Potts going close twice, while Maguire and Ledson saw their shots saved on the line.

45' + 1' HALF-TIME - PRESTON 0-0 LIVERPOOL.

44' Rudd has yet to make a save tonight, and McAvoy would have taken that with one minute remaining of the first half.

41' This game has felt like a training exercise for Liverpool, but Preston have not had anything to worry about so far, and the sheer number of changes Klopp has made has taken the sting out of his team by the looks of things.

39' Liverpool have progressed from 16 of their last 17 League Cup ties against sides from a lower division, with the exception coming in the 2010-11 campaign when they lost on penalties to Northampton Town.

36' Liverpool could do with lifting the tempo of this match, especially if they want to open the scoring before half-time. Everything is a little one-paced at present, and that is playing into Preston's hands.

34' Liverpool duo Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jones are starting to get more joy in midfield, but they have yet to create any meaningful chances for Blair, Origi or Minamino.

30' This game is now starting to feel like a proper cup tie; it just took 25 minutes for the players to warm up.

28' SO CLOSE!!! Preston miss three chances to open the scoring, but Liverpool keep them at bay. Maguire's first shot was blocked by Adrian, but Ledson then saw his effort saved on the goalline by Williams. With Liverpool failing to clear their lines, Potts had the chance to punish them, but he leaned back and blasted his shot over the crossbar. Preston might not get a better opportunity to open the scoring, and they will be kicking themselves!

24' CHANCE!!! Potts goes close to opening the scoring, but Adrian stays big to deny the Preston midfielder. Liverpool's midfield were caught trying to play a high line, but Potts failed to take the chance, and it remains 0-0.

20' Preston's five-man midfield is doing an excellent job of neutralising Liverpool's attacks, but whether they can keep that up for the rest of this match is another question.

18' Just a reminder that his game will go straight to penalties, should neither side get the job done inside 90 minutes.

15' Liverpool's midfield needs to take control of this fixture, with Oxlade-Chamberlain a key cog in this Klopp team.

13' Nearly 15 minutes into the game and Liverpool have barely got going, which perhaps might not surprise some readers after Klopp decided to change his entire starting XI.

10' Preston registers the first real shot on goal, and Barkhuizen is the man that wastes it. The home side sat deep and launched a quick counter-attack, only for Barkhuizen to find the back of the stands with his effort.

8' Maguire and Barkhuizen are taking it in turns to drop into midfield to help Potts, and so far, the plan is working for McAvoy's side.

5' The home side have made a decent start to tonight's encounter, keeping Liverpool away from their penalty box inside the opening exchanges.

2' Deepdale is packed as Preston eye a famous cup shock, and they will be hoping to make a fast start in front of their passionate fanbase.

1' We are underway in Lancashire!

This is the first meeting between Preston and Liverpool since January 2009, with the Reds winning 2-0 at Deepdale in the FA Cup.

Preston boss Frankie McAvoy makes nine changes to his team after Saturday's 2-0 Championship defeat to Blackpool. Van den Berg has been given the opportunity to play against his parent club, and he will form part of the back three, and he and Hughes are the only two players to keep their place in the team. Reds coach Klopp changes his starting XI for the trip to Lancashire, with midfielder Morton makes his full debut, while Blair makes his first senior appearance for the Reds.

SUBS: Diogo Jota, Ibrahima Konate, Nathaniel Phillips, Marcelo, Conor Bradley, Owen Beck, Elijah Dixon-Bonner, Roberto Firmino, Liam Hughes.

LIVERPOOL (4-3-3): Adrian; Neco Williams, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez, Konstantinos Tsimikas; Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Curtis Jones, Tyler Morton; Harvey Blair, Divock Origi, Takumi Minamino.

SUBS: Emil Riis Jakobsen, Joshua Earl, Jordan Storey, Benjamin Whiteman, Daniel Johnson, Patrick Bauer, Daniel Iversen, Scott Sinclair, Paul Huntington.

PRESTON (3-4-1-2): Declan Rudd; Sepp van den Berg, Liam Lindsay, Andrew Hughes; Joseph Rafferty, Alistair McCann, Ryan Ledson, Greg Cunningham; Brad Potts; Tom Barkhuizen, Sean Maguire.

Preston's recent form is not something that will give them any hope as they prepare to try and pull off a cup shock. The Lilywhites have won one of their previous six matches, but they are unbeaten in seven at home.

Liverpool's squad will still be on a high following their historic win over Manchester United, but it is back down to business tonight as they travel to Deepdale. The Reds beat Norwich City in the previous round, and they will be confident of booking their place in the quarter-finals.

Good evening and welcome to tonight's live coverage of the EFL Cup tie between Preston North End and Liverpool. The Reds are unbeaten so far this season in all competitions, and the Championship side will have to be at their best to even come close to beating Jurgen Klopp's men.

LIVE: West Ham v Manchester City

Thanks for joining me for this coverage of West Ham's 5-3 penalty shootout win over Manchester City in the EFL Cup after the 90 minutes ended 0-0.

Guardiola's team had won this competition the last four seasons in a row, but this penalty shootout defeat confirms that there will be a new name on the trophy this season. For the hosts, it's a huge win in a season that is shaping up to be pretty special as they continue to defy the odds in the league as well as in domestic and European cup competitions.

So it finishes 5-3 on penalties to the hosts after finishing goalless in normal time. Foden missed his side's opening penalty by putting it wide of Areola's goal, and the Hammers scored all of theirs to knock out the reigning champions of this competition. That's harsh on the visitors, who did everything but score during the 90 minutes.

It’s all over! Benrahma’s penalty is brilliant and right in the side of the net, and it’s West Ham who go through.

Grealish keeps his side in it by smashing his penalty into the top right.

It’s 4-2 to the Hammers! Cresswell places it into the bottom corner.

Jesus coolly slots it into the right side of the goal as Areola went the other way.

Dawson makes it 3-1! He sends the keeper the wrong way.

What a penalty! Cancelo smashes his penalty into the side of the net to get his side on the board.

It’s 2-0 to the Hammers! Steffen gets a hand to Bowen’s penalty but it goes into the net anyway.

Foden has missed! The young Englishman smashes his effort wide of the right post!

The captain Noble side foots his effort straight down the middle to make it 1-0 in this shootout.

It's up to Steffen and Areola to be the heroes for their respective teams. Which keeper will win the mind games and send their team through to the next round of this competition?

And so we finish goalless and this game will be decided from the penalty spot. It was a game that was certainly dominated by the visiting side, and they will wonder how they haven't managed to get this tie won within the 90 minutes. They went closest with Ake in the first half and then Stones and Sterling in the second period. The hosts also had chances and Soucek probably went closest as he fired past the far post.

90' + 4' END OF 90 MINUTES: WEST HAM UNITED 0-0 MANCHESTER CITY

90' + 3' The free-kick is blocked by the wall and Sterling then heads straight at Areola.

90' + 2' Fernandinho wins a late free-kick in a potentially dangerous position outside the box.

90' Close again for the visitors! Foden lashes a low shot just past Areola's left post as we move into three minutes of additional time.

88' Soucek sends a side-footed effort well over from the edge of the box.

86' City force a couple of late corners as they start to really put the pressure on. Can they take advantage of one of these?

84' What a save! Zinchenko shoots from 30 yards out Areola makes a great acrobatic save to get up and tip it over the bar.

80' It's the visitors who are looking the more likely to snatch a late winner here and send themselves through to the next round.

78' De Bruyne tries to dribble into the box but his touch is too heavy and it goes harmlessly behind for a goal kick.

76' Foden's shot deflects into the path of Gundogan but the German just can't quite get enough quality contact on the ball to stab it home.

74' The full-back is up and we are back playing.

73' Cresswell is down receiving treatment after a coming together with Sterling.

71' Cresswell's corner is very poor and curls out for a goal-kick after missing everybody in the box.

70' Zincehnko blocks a Lanzini effort from distance behind for a corner.

68' Palmer smashes well over after Sterling laid the ball off to him in the middle of the box.

66' Cresswell sends a corner over but there's an offside as it pings around the area and the visitors have a free-kick.

64' The visitors still have Foden to come on off the bench, who has been involved in nine goals in his last seven starts in this competition.

61' Mahrez sends a tame half-volley from the edge of the box towards goal, but Areola easily gathers the attempt.

60' Soucek gets the ball laid off to him in the box and he aims for the top right corner but his effort just goes past the post. This game has shot into life in the last few minutes.

59' City go close for the third time in a matter of minutes! That might be Areola's best save of the three too, as he palms a Stones header from a corner away from five yards out.

58' Now it's De Bruyne who goes close, as his shot from the edge of the box is deflected and Areola again makes a good save to push it behind for a corner.

57' Sterling cuts in from the left and aims for the near post, but Areola does well to save it low to his right.

55' And now it's the hosts who go close! Steffen can only palm Masuaku's effort across to Yarmolenko, when Zinchenko does brilliantly to get across in time to block his countryman's shot.

53' It should be 1-0 to the visitors! Palmer does well to hold off a challenge from Soucek and the young forward passes to Gundogan to the left of the goal, but the midfielder's dinked effort goes across the face of goal and out for a goal kick.

52' Mahrez has a cross blocked by his teammate De Bruyne before it can reach its intended target.

50' Masuaku sends a decent effort arrowing over Steffen's goal after he was played in down the left by Noble.

48' The Hammers have started this second half well as they press for the opening goal.

46' The hosts get us back underway for the second period.

Both teams will hope to progress into the next round of this competition as they look for cup glory this season. Which manager will blink first and make the necessary changes to win this tie?

The scoreline is 0-0 as we go to the break although Guardiola will surely feel his men should be in front after spurning a couple of good chances. The best of those came just before the break as Ake sent a header wide of the post from a Mahrez free-kick when it looked as if the visitors would go in front. Mahrez and Palmer also went close, with the best opportunity for the hosts coming when Noble's shot from distance was saved with relative ease by Steffen.

45' + 1' HALF TIME: WEST HAM UNITED  0-0 MANCHESTER CITY

45' A big chance goes begging for City! Mahrez sends the free-kick over and Ake does excellently to get on the end of it. However, he can't get his header right and it edges past the post when he should've scored.

44' Lanzini drags down Gundogan in midfield and is perhaps lucky to escape a booking for doing so.

42' Areola is brave to come and claim a Gundogan cross as Stones lurked.

41' Palmer sends a poor effort over with his left foot when he had options to pass on both his left and right.

39' Ake does just enough to intercept a cross before Yarmolenko can get a header away at goal. He heads it up into the air, allowing Steffen to come and claim.

37' The electric Mahrez tries again to make something happen, but his effort from distance is blocked by Dawson.

35' Gundogan lofts a cross over to the back post but Mahrez's volley flashes back across goal and away from danger.

34' Mahrez tries to deliver into the area but the Algerian gets it badly wrong and it curls out for a goal kick.

32' Walker sends in a low cross but it's dealt with by the defence before it can reach Sterling.

30' Gundogan fires well over from outside the box.

28' Sterling weaves into the box but is crowded out by the home defence and he loses the ball.

26' Yarmolenko gets the ball to feet in the area but he can't make space for a shot and Ake smashes clear.

25' Palmer shoots from the edge of the box but Areola saves it with his feet and the danger is cleared.

23' The home side are just starting to creep up the pitch and ask a few questions of their own.

21' Ake brings down Yarmolenko as the Ukrainian breaks, but Noble's free-kick to the back post doesn't cause any issues.

19' The visitors win a corner but it's headed clear at the front post.

17' Noble stings the palms of Steffen with an effort from distance.

15' Zinchenko gives the ball away but the Hammers can't capitalise on the mistake.

13' Guardiola's men have certainly started the brighter but haven't created a decent chance as of yet.

11' The hosts have been knocked out in both of their League Cup ties with the visitors.

9' Mahrez plays another clever pass to Gundogan but the midfielder can't get his shot away.

7' Mahrez tries a ball through to Palmer but he is offside.

5' City have beaten tonight's opponents in ten of their last 11 meetings.

3' It's a cagey start to the game as both sides see attacks peter out.

1' The visitors kick us off and we are underway.

The two sides make their way onto the pitch.

Visiting boss Pep Guardiola brings in seven changes from the beating of Wycombe in the last round with the likes of Stones and Palmer coming into the starting lineup while Foden drops to the bench.

Home manager David Moyes makes three changes with Cresswell, Soucek and Vlasic coming in while Bowen drops to the bench and Ryan Fredericks and Alex Kral miss out completely.

SUBS: Joao Cancelo, Scott Carson, Ruben Dias, Samuel Edozie, Phil Foden, Gabriel Jesus, Jack Grealish, Ayemeric Laporte, Rodri.

MANCHESTER CITY (4-3-3): Zackary Steffen; Oleksandr Zinchenko, John Stones, Nathan Ake, Kyle Walker; Ilkay Gundogan, Fernandinho, Kevin De Bruyne; Cole Palmer, Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez.

SUBS: Darren Randolph, Harrison Ashby, Jamal Baptiste, Said Benrahma, Jarrod Bowen, Daniel Chesters, Vladimir Coufal, Pablo Fornals, Kurt Zouma.

WEST HAM (4-2-3-1): Alphonse Areola; Ben Johnson, Craig Dawson, Issa Diop, Aaron Cresswell; Mark Noble, Tomas Soucek; Arthur Masuaku, Manuel Lanzini, Andriy Yarmolenko; Nikola Vlasic.

The Citizens are third in the league and are through to this round of the competition having beaten League One side Wycombe Wanderers 6-1 in the previous round. They've won this competition the last four seasons in a row.

The Hammers are through to this stage of the cup after beating Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford with an early Manuel Lanzini goal. They also sit fourth in the Premier League having won six of their nine games this season.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of this Round of 16 EFL Cup clash between West Ham United and Manchester City at the London Stadium.

AFC U-23 Asian Cup Qualifiers: Late penalty sinks India against UAE

After yesterday's results all four teams of Group E are tied at three points...

India U-23 suffered a 1-0 defeat to UAE U-23 in their second Group E match of the AFC U-23 Asian Cup qualifiers at the Fujairah Club Stadium in Fujairah. In a match where chances were hard to come by, the victors were fortunate to get a penalty in the 80th minute which was duly converted by Abdullah Idrees.

India's coach Igor Stimac made a single change to the starting XI that won 2-1 against Oman with Lalengmawia replacing Aniket Jadhav. The Croatian stuck to the back four of Asish Rai, Deepak Tangri, Narender Gahlot, and Akash Misra with Dheeraj Singh under the sticks. Lalengmawia slotted in as a defensive midfielder and skipper Suresh Singh was instructed to operate in an advanced position to put pressure on the UAE centre backs while chasing the ball. Vikram Pratap Singh and Rahul KP occupied the wide areas while Rahim Ali was the lone striker upfront.

The Whites started to dominate right from the start enjoying the lion's share of ball possession. But India held their shape well and hardly provided any space for UAE. The likes of Sultan Adil and Majid Rashid kept knocking but ran out of steam after they reached the attacking third with Gahlot and Tangri stifling the forwards.

It was not until the 33rd minute that UAE had a clear sight of the goal but Rashed Salem's attempt was brilliantly kept out by Dheeraj in a one-on-one situation. Just at the nick of half-time India had got the ball at the back of UAE's net but Ali was adjudged to have touched the ball from an off-side position.

The dynamics of the game hardly changed after the break with UAE trying every trick up their sleeve to break down a disciplined and composed Indian defense. Around the hour-mark Abdullah Sultan found an open net to head the ball home due to some miscommunication in Indian defense but the player could only strike it wide. Stimac responded immediately by sacrificing Vikram Pratap and bringing on Sumit Rathi.

The hosts upped their ante in the final 20 minutes as they started pouring more bodies forward in search of the opener. In the 74th Ali Saleh got a freebie as India lost possession in a crucial area but it was Dheeraj once again who came to the rescue with an outstretched hand.

With just 10 minutes to go, Suresh conceded a penalty as he brought down Ali Saleh inside the box. Abdullah Idrees stepped up to take the spot-kick and the defender made no mistake to break the deadlock with a calm and composed effort. Stimac threw in Jadhav and Rohit Danu in the dying embers of the game to salvage a point but it was not enough.

In the other match, Oman beat Kyrgystan 1-0 which meant that all teams are tied at three points after two matchdays. Stimac's troops will once again return to action in the decider against Kyrgyzstan on October 30.

‘Osimhen shifts balance more than Lukaku’ – Bologna coach Mihajlovic hails Napoli star

The Nigeria star continues to dazzle in front of goal and he is still the leading scorer for the Parthenopeans this campaign

Bologna manager Sinisa Mihajlovic has labelled Napoli striker Victor Osimhen as a "really strong" player ahead of their Serie A clash on Friday.

Osimhen has scored nine goals in 11 competitive matches this season and his fine goalscoring form has helped Luciano Spalletti’s men maintain an unbeaten streak in the Italian top-flight.

Napoli are three points behind leaders AC Milan, with a game in hand, and Mihajlovic described the Nigeria international as "an engine" who controls the Parthenopeans’ frontline, comparing him to former Inter Milan talisman Romelu Lukaku, who scored 24 Serie A goals last campaign.

He further claimed Osimhen justified the record amount paid for his signature from Lille in August 2020.

“He shifts the balance even more than Lukaku,” Mihajlovic said in a press conference, per Football Italia. “What do they eat in Naples?

“He seems like he has an engine. He’s ‘ignorant’, but in the good sense of the word. He runs, opens the game, restarts, scores.

“He’s really strong, but I didn’t expect this much. It’s also true that they paid €70m for him.”

Meanwhile, Napoli boss Spalletti also talked about Osimhen’s development despite their tight schedule across all competitions.

“When there are such tight deadlines, you risk being too heavy if you go into depth,” Spalletti said. “It’s clear that when there are weeks available, you also remain individually with different players, to work on what they do least.

“When the time is limited, it must be used at a group level, as a team. Then, even within the group, there are situations that can improve individual players because we watch videos, we work on possession and non-possession phases, on how our construction should be.

“Osimhen has already adapted very well and must know that he will receive much more. It’s part of his role. After the messages sent, he has received everything and now has exemplary behaviour, that is OK for us.”

Napoli dropped their first points of the season against Roma after a goalless draw on Sunday, but they have the chance to reclaim the top spot at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona if they grab maximum points.

PSL Wrap: McCarthy's AmaZulu FC humbled, Stellenbosch FC close gap on Mamelodi Sundowns

Two matchday eight games were played on Wednesday and it was Stellies and Sekhukhune, who recorded wins

AmaZulu FC were humbled by Sekhukhune United in an encounter that was played at Emirates Airline Park in Johannesburg.

Usuthu were oozing with confidence having qualified for the Caf Champions League group stage for the club's history over the weekend and coach Benni McCarthy was now looking to mastermind a win over Sekhukhune.

However, two second-half goals from Willard Katsande and Chibuike Ohizu inspired Sekhukhune to a well-deserved 2-0 victory as they brought McCarthy's side down to earth.

Babina Noko dominated the game and created the better chances with goalkeeper Veli Mothwa forced to produce fine saves to deny Pogiso Mahlangu and Seth Parusnath in the first-half.

However, the Bafana Bafana international was finally beaten after the restart and it was former Kaizer Chiefs star Katsande, who broke the deadlock in the 48th minute.

Tlotlo Leepile's corner-kick was flicked by Mahlangu at the near post and Katsande scored with a tap in from the blind spot to hand Sekhukhune a 1-0 lead and it was his first goal for the club.

Mothwa was beaten for the second time in the 51st minute when Ohizu scored from close range to make it 2-0 to Sekhukhune and it was his fifth league goal of the season.

Babina Noko were reduced to 10 players when Mahlangu was sent off after receiving his second yellow card of the game, but they managed to contain Usuthu until the game ended in a 2-0 win in favour of Sekhukhune.

The victory took Sekhukhune to fourth place on the league standings as they continue to impress in their debut season in the local top flight, while AmaZulu remained eighth on the log.

Meanwhile, Stellenbosch FC maintained their unbeaten start to the current PSL season when they secured a 1-0 win over Marumo Gallants at Danie Craven Stadium in the Western Cape.

Stellies were hoping to move up to second place on the standings after SuperSport United dropped points over the weekend, while Gallants were brimming with confidence having reached the Caf Confederation Cup play-off round last week Friday.

The only goal of the match was netted by the in-form Ashley Du Preez, who beat goalkeeper Washington Arubi with a cool finish to hand Stellenbosch a 1-0 lead three minutes before the half-hour mark.

Bahlabane Ba Ntwa pushed for the equalizing goal after the restart, but they couldn't beat Sage Stephens in the Stellies goal-posts on the day and the game ended in a 1-0 win in favour of Stellenbosch.

The victory took Stellies to second-place on table - three points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, while Gallants, who are still winless in the PSL, remained 15th on the table.

Blow for Orlando Pirates as Mabasa joins growing injury list ahead of Royal AM clash

Bucs have issued an update regarding the injuries in their camp as they look to snap their three-match winless run in PSL against Thwihli Thwahla

Premier Soccer League giants Orlando Pirates have announced that Tshegofatso Mabasa has joined the club's growing injury list ahead of the clash with Royal AM.

The Buccaneers are set to resume their PSL campaign when they welcome Thwihli Thwahla at the 2010 Fifa World Cup training ground, Orlando Stadium, in Soweto on Saturday.

They are coming off a morale-boosting 1-0 win over Congo-Brazzaville outfit Diables Noirs on Sunday which saw Pirates advance to the play-off round of the Caf Confederation Cup.

Mabasa featured as a substitute against Diables in the second round first-leg match which was played at Orlando Stadium, where the Buccaneers won the tie 1-0 on aggregate.

Pirates have now released the following statement indicating that Mabasa and veteran goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands are the latest players to pick up injuries:

"There has been some progress on the injury front, with some players in the Buccaneers’ long injury list nearing a return to action," a club statement read.

"Meanwhile, goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands and striker Tshegofatso Mabasa are among the latest injury concerns in the camp.

"Neither side [Pirates and Royal AM] has a player in the suspension list, meaning all fit players in both camps are eligible for selection."

Mabasa has been Bucs' best striker thus far this season and he has been named in the Bafana Bafana's provisional squad for next month's 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers against Ghana and Zimbabwe.

The left-footed marksman and Sandilands have joined the likes of Thembinkosi Lorch, Innocent Maela, Zakhele Lepasa, Richard Ofori, Frank Mhango, and Vincent Pule on Pirates' injury list.

While one of Bucs' key players Ben Motshwari remains suspended by the club after being charged by the police last month.

Meanwhile, Pirates have been boosted by the availability of Olisa Ndah, who missed the match against Diables Noirs.

"Having hit the ground running in his first few appearances in Bucs colours, new recruit Olisa Ndah can be expected to feature in the matchday squad after not being available ahead of the Club’s last fixture," a club statement read.

The Nigeria international, who is a central defender by trade, impressed in Pirates' last PSL game against Maritzburg United which ended in a 0-0 draw in Pietermaritzburg on October 20.

‘We get on very well’ - Choupo-Moting on his relationship with Mbappe and Neymar

The Nigerians crashed out in the competition’s second round, but the goalkeeper claims it was a learning experience for the Yenagoa-based outfit

Goalkeeper John Shaibu says Bayelsa United have no regrets about losing to CS Sfaxien in the second qualifying round of the Caf Confederation Cup.

The Nigeria National League side crashed out of the competition after losing 4-1 on aggregate to the Tunisian giants.

Bayelsa secured a 1-0 victory in the first leg, but they were mauled 4-0 in the reverse fixture staged at the Stade Taieb Mhiri, Sfax on Saturday.

According to the former Sunshine Stars and Abia Warriors star, Diepreye Teibowei’s men have taken some positives from the loss.

“I am proud of my team’s performance and I must say that we have no regrets losing to a top club like CS Sfaxien,” Shaibu told Goal.

“We put in our best both home and away but at the end, we were unlucky not to qualify for the play-off round.

“This is a good learning experience for us and going forward, you will see a better Bayelsa United, we have set a standard for ourselves.

“Despite playing in the Caf Confederation Cup, we set out to shock the continent by emerging as champions, but that did not happen the way we wanted.

“Hopefully, we will try and qualify for the tournament again in the 2022-23 campaign and we hope to go beyond the second round.”

The NNL side won the 2021 Aiteo Cup after defeating NPFL side Nasarawa United via penalty shoot-out following a 2-2 draw after extra-time.

With that, they became the first team from Nigeria’s second division to lift the prestigious cup since Dolphins FC's feat 20 years ago.

Shaibu added how his team’s ambition is to now earn a berth in the Nigeria Professional Football League when the new season begins.

“With our hopes to stun Africa dashed, we have moved on and we have shifted our focus on qualifying for the NPFL,” he continued.

“The teams we played in the Confederation Cup found it hard to believe that we are playing in Nigeria’s lower league because of the way we played.

“We will not let that get into our heads and all we can do to make our fans happy is by returning to the Nigerian topflight where we truly belong.”

Arsenal needed 'complete midfielder' Partey during Wenger era - Essien

After some stadium spectators were allowed to watch the Bafana Bafana against Ethiopia match, the league has also moved to open the turnstiles again

The Premier Soccer League has announced 2000 “fully vaccinated” fans will be at Moses Mabhida Stadium for the MTN8 final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City on Saturday.

Since March 2020, no supporters have been allowed to attend matches organised by the PSL due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But Safa opened FNB Stadium earlier in October to watch the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifier between South Africa and Ethiopia with spectatorship limited to 2000 fully vaccinated fans.

The PSL has attached similar conditions for Saturday's clash, and no tickets will be sold.

“In accordance with the approval granted by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in terms of the directives issued by the minister of Sport, Arts and Culture on 15 October 2021, a total number of 2000 people will be allowed to attend the MTN8 final,” the PSL said in a statement.

“The attendees will be made up of tickets issued to sponsors of the league as per contractual obligations, MTN8 finalist member clubs’ allocation, and accredited personnel [working staff, members of the media, players, technical team members and match officials].   Due to the above-mentioned factors, there will be no tickets available for sale.

“As provided in the directives, all attendees must be fully vaccinated and adhere to all covid-19 protocols such as wearing of masks and social distancing.”

Earlier this month, Safa said the PSL had agreed to use the November 6 Soweto derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates as a “mass vaccination drive” by allowing a certain number of fans to attend this fixture between the traditional giants.

The Soweto Derby is the biggest crowd-puller in South African football and is always sold out.

But the league has decided to begin that drive earlier, starting with the MTN8 final.

“The League calls upon all members of the public to continue supporting the government's stance on the importance of vaccinations and the achievement of the required herd immunity. The sooner sufficient South Africans are vaccinated, the sooner supporters will be able to return in numbers,” added the PSL.

Tusker 1-2 FC Talanta: Kahiro brace condemn Brewers to second defeat

The Brewers remained winless from two matches in the top-flight after failing to beat the promoted side at Ruaraka grounds

Tusker suffered their second defeat of the season in the FKF Premier League after losing 2-1 against FC Talanta in a match at Ruaraka grounds on Wednesday.

The promoted side took the lead in the 20th minute when Francis Kahiro scored from close range before Tusker levelled courtesy of James Macharia's tap-in in the 56th minute but Kahiro scored yet again in the 62nd minute to sink the Brewers at their backyard.

The Brewers coach Robert Matano handed new signing Stewart Omondi his first start since joining the team while former Kariobangi Sharks goalkeeper Brian Bwire was restored between the sticks after he sat out of the team's 4-0 Caf Champions League defeat against Zamalek last Friday.

Meanwhile, Talanta coach Ken Kenyatta kept faith with the team that had beaten Vihiga Bullets 2-0 with goalkeeper Kevin Otieno keeping his spot same as striker Brian Yakhama.

It was Talanta, who started the game on the front foot and they almost took the lead with only five minutes played when Barrack Odhiambo released the unmarked Michael Jairo at the far end of the corner and the left-footed player dribbled past two defenders before unleashing a shot which hit the woodwork.

However, five minutes later, they took a deserved lead when Kahiro pounced onto a loose ball in the Brewers’ danger zone after a clever deliver from Nichodemus Malika before beating Bwire with a right-footed effort.

Talanta kept knocking at Tusker’s door and they almost went 2-0 up in the 20th minute after Malika set Kahiro with a through ball but Bwire came out quickly from his line to gather the ball.

In the 36th minute, Tusker missed an open chance to level the scores after former AFC Leopards player Clyde Senaji set up Omondi but his final effort flew over the bar.

In the 44th minute, Tusker were handed a free-kick at the edge of the box after Ibrahim Joshua was fouled by Alvin Ochieng, and Senaji stepped up to curl a good effort which Talanta keeper Otieno tipped over the bar to keep the scores 1-0 at the half-time break.

On resumption, Otieno pulled a great save to deny Tusker’s Joshua after he combined well with John Njuguna and Macharia.

Tusker made three changes Shami Kibwana, Kevin Mbugua, and Boniface Muchiri coming in for Rodgers Ouma, Omondi, and Njuguna while Talanta pulled out Yakhama for Edwin Lavatsa.

Tusker then levelled the scores in the 56th minute when Macharia tapped in a cross from Kibwana which bounced off keeper Otieno to hit the back of the net.

But five minutes later, Talanta took the lead for the second time in the game when Kahiro powered home his second of the day after beating his markers to slot past Bwire.

The defeat means Tusker are yet to win a match this season since they lost their season opener 1-0 against AFC Leopards while Talanta have two wins from four matches.

Tusker: Brian Bwire, Kevin Monyi, Hillary Wandera, Kalos Kirenge, Eugine Asike, Clyde Senaji, Jackson Macharia, Rodgers Ouma, Stewart Omondi, Ibrahim Joshua and John Njuguna.

Subs: Patrick Matasi, Christopher Oruchum, Mbugua, Teddy Osok, Boniface Muchiri, and Shami Kibwana.

FC Talanta: Kevin Otieno, Alvin Ochieng, Evans Makari, Nichodemus Malika, Shela Mandela, Michael Bodo, Barrack Odhiambo, Francis Kahiro, Anthony Gicho, Michael Jairo and Brian Yakhama.

Subs: James Omusinde, Eugene Ambulwa, Erick Lusala, Luis Masika, Enock Machaka, Mohamed Coulibaly, Edwin Lavatsa, Maurice Dukuly and Vincent Otieno.

'Anything goes in the league' - Solskjaer calls on Manchester United players to show title credentials over Christmas

The Brazilian made his 50th Liga appearance for the Blancos at Camp Nou, but is not content to rest on his laurels

Rodrygo has admitted he is not completely "satisfied" after starring in Real Madrid's Clasico win at Barcelona as he aims to reach even greater heights with the Spanish giants.

Madrid moved up to second in the Liga standings with an impressive 2-1 win at Camp Nou on Sunday, opening up a five-point advantage over their arch-rivals in the process.

David Alaba and Lucas Vazquez grabbed the goals for the Blancos, but Rodrygo also produced another impressive display on the right wing to mark his 50th appearance in the Spanish top flight in style.

What has been said?

The Brazilian is currently keeping Eden Hazard out of Madrid's starting XI and they are on course to fight for the title after seeing off Barca, but he has no intention of resting on his laurels.

"I'm not satisfied with the Clasico, I want more," Rodrygo told Goal. "Reaching 50 games in La Liga is something very important for me.

"I am young, this is only my third season and I have already reached such a milestone. I hope to continue, always with the aim of helping Real Madrid win.

"I'm happy to reach these figures and I will work to reach others. We are in a very good moment, the team has evolved and the trend is to improve more and more, with each game."

Rodrygo's Madrid record

Rodrygo completed a €45 million (£38m/$52m) move to Madrid from Flamengo in 2019, and has since appeared in 71 games in all competitions for the club. The 20-year-old has scored 11 goals, including two at the start of the new campaign, and has 12 assists to his name.

What's next?

Rodrygo will be back in contention for a place in Carlo Ancelotti's line-up when Madrid welcome Osasuna to Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night.

The Blancos then prepare for an away fixture against Osasuna on Saturday, which comes four days before their next Champions League group stage outing against Sheriff.

Kariobangi Sharks 0-2 Gor Mahia: Omala, Lwasa help keep K'Ogalo's unblemished run going

The local giants are yet to drop points in the league as they have outshined their first three season-opening rivals

Gor Mahia have registered their third straight Football Kenya Federation Premier League win after a 2-0 victory against Kariobangi Sharks on Wednesday at Kasarani.

The positive midweek result - courtesy of goals from Peter Lwasa and Benson Omala - means K'Ogalo have not dropped a point in the Premier League after victories against KCB, AFC Leopards, and now Kariobangi Sharks.

Omala - who scored against KCB in a league duel and against Al-Ahly Merowe of Sudan in the Champions League - opened the score for Gor Mahia with a 12th-minute strike.

Harun Shakava and John Ochieng had to assemble fast in their penalty area and their combined efforts managed to stop Kariobangi Sharks' Eric Mmata who had made his way into the danger zone at a terrific speed in the 21st minute.

K'Ogalo's backline was almost caught off guard again in the 24th minute as Karioangi Sharks attacked and won a corner after a water break. However, the away side managed to clear the resultant corner after William Muluya's side had decided to take a short one.

Samuel Onyango wasted a very open chance that would have doubled Gor Mahia's lead in the 28th minute. Austin Odhiambo did well to beat a number of his markers and laid a cut-back pass for the former Ulinzi Stars forward, whose final shot hugely missed the target as the ball flew way above the crossbar.

Kariobangi Sharks' goalkeeper Brandon Obiero had to make a quick retreat and tip Lwasa's shot over the bar. Lwasa had spotted Obiero off his line and tried to volley the ball over him, but the custodian was quick to retreat and clear the danger in the 31st minute.

Omala would have registered a brace in the 49th minute had the referee not disallowed his goal for offside. The former Western Stima striker took a volley over Obiero, but his effort could not count as the referee overturned the goal as the second half picked up speed.

Gor Mahia's Gad Mathews was called to action in the 54th minute when he stopped Mata - from close range - from restoring parity. A few seconds after stopping Mata's effort, Mathews had to react quickly and deny Sydney Lokale from scoring from the rebound.

Boniface Omondi - who scored in the Mashemeji Derby against AFC Leopards in Gor Mahia's last Premier League engagement - came on for Onyango in the 63rd minute before John Macharia, Yusuf Mainge, and Peter Oudu replaced Ochieng, Omala and Fred Nkata respectively.

Lwasa, who was unlucky to get a goal on a number of previous occasions, found the back of the net in the 82nd minute. Obiero made a mistake as he tried to build from the back and gave the former Kariobangi Sharks star a perfect chance to double Gor Mahia's lead.

The loss is Kariobangi Sharks' first in the new campaign.

The veteran administrator calls on the government to disband the current regime and set up a committee to oversee the day to day running of football

Sam Nyamweya has called on the government to move with speed and disband the Football Kenya Federation led by Nick Mwendwa after they were accused of running down the sport in the country.

With the government confirming they have been given the go-ahead to audit the federation accounts, Nyamweya, who served as the FKF boss in the last regime, has called on the Ministry of Sports to disband the current office with immediate effect.

'Current FKF regime has failed Kenyans'

“It is now clear the current FKF has failed Kenyans in their mandate to manage football in the country and I wish to thank the Ministry of Sports through Cabinet Secretary Amb. Amina Mohamed for her quick intervention to salvage what is left of the game,” Nyamweya said in a statement obtained by Goal.

“The move by the Ministry of Sports to order for the audit of FKF accounts is a clear indicator that the game of football is not in safe hands; the current regime has taken the game down the drain by misappropriating funds meant to improve the sport.

“On behalf of football stakeholders in the country, I want to request the Ministry of Sports to do the following: “There have been several claims of misappropriation of funds and several malpractices, and in our view we want the government to disband the federation with immediate effect because it is not worth to have such a federation now.

“The government to sit down with stakeholders and Fifa so as to form a caretaker committee to take charge of running football in the country with immediate effect, by doing so, it will help the investigative team to complete their work without interference.”

The statement continued: “In conclusion, it is now obvious the current regime does not have any moral authority to run football in the country and it is also obvious that money has been misappropriated.

“The stakeholders will be satisfied when the federation is disbanded and sent home and fresh blood brought in to run football in the country.”

Permission granted

On confirming the government had received the backing of Fifa to audit FKF accounts, Sports Principal Secretary Joe Okudo said: "We got the go-ahead from Fifa. That is why we have also requested the auditors from the Kenya National Audit Office and the private sector to audit the FKF funds.

"We have been engaging Fifa to allow us to move in and help have proper structures at the FKF. Now that Fifa has allowed us, we will ensure proper management of football in this country.

"The committee’s summoning of Mr [Nick] Mwendwa will help our course to ensure accountability in the management of football in the country."

Meanwhile, the Sports Registrar has already started work to audit the federation’s accounts just three days after the Cabinet Secretary for Sports Amina Mohamed ordered for the same.

The statement continued: “Following the Cabinet Secretary’s directive that an inspection of FKF is undertaken in accordance with the Sports Act and the subsequent appointment of the Inspector, the Inspector hereby requests you to submit certified copies of the following documents for the period between July 1, 2014, to date or on or before October 28, 2021, to enable the Inspectors to execute their mandate.”

'Committee wants 34 documents from FKF'

Some of the documents the committees want include the current FKF constitution, Fifa and Caf statutes, FKF registration certificate(s), license for referees, coaches and athletes, list of registered sports organisations (County football sports associations and clubs including premier league, nationwide and super league), affiliated to FKF- and their registration certificates.

The orders to investigate FKF accounts were issued by the Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Amina Mohamed.

India U23 vs UAE U23: Team news

The Indian boys, under Igor Stimac, started off on the right foot as they defeated Oman 2-1 as Rahim Ali and Vikram Pratap Singh combined well up top and scored a goal each.

If Vikram was the livewire going forward, Deepak Tangri and Narender Gahlot formed a strong central defensive partnership. Skipper Suresh Singh commanded the midfield, and the full wing-back pair of Asish Rai and Akash Mishra fared well too.

Meanwhile, UAE are coming off a loss to Kyrgyzstan. Khalid Al-Balochi had given UAE the lead against Kyrgyzstan at the stroke of half-time but the hosts weren't able to prevent their opponents from scoring twice towards the end.

Atanga bags brace, Fortes scores as Oostende maul CS Onhaye

The African stars were among the goal scorers as De Kustboys tore apart the Belgian third division outfit on Tuesday night

David Atanga was on target twice as Oostende decimated CS Onhaye 8-1 in Tuesday’s Belgian Cup sixth round fixture.

The former Ghana U20 star put up an impressive showing to find the net on two occasions as De Kustboys saw off the third division outfit.

In the nine-goal thriller, Onhaye took a shock lead in the second minute courtesy of Delplank Schelfhout who capitalised on a moment of carelessness from the hosts to fire past goalkeeper Jordi Schelfhout.

That lead lasted for just three minutes as the Belgian topflight side restored parity through Marko Kvasina. The Austrian forward completed his brace in the 26th minute to put Oostende ahead.

In the goal-laden first half, Cape Verde international Steven Fortes made it 3-1 in the 37th minute when he headed the ball past a helpless goalkeeper Jeremy De Vriendt.

Four minutes before the half time break, Kvasina completed his treble with a cool finish as Onhaye went into the half time break ruing missed chances.

Notwithstanding their massive lead, manager Alexander Blessin strengthened his team by introducing Brecht Capon and Robbie D'Haese for Siebe Wylin and France youth international of Cameroonian descent Theo Ndicka.

Atanga extended the lead with his 50th-minute finish before completing his double on the hour mark.

A foul in the visiting team’s penalty area ensured that Oostende earned a penalty that was converted by Thierry Ambrose ten minutes from full time as Ndicka completed the destruction with his 80th-minute effort.

With this result, the 2016-17 Belgian Cup winners are through to the seventh round of the tournament, with their opponents expected to be announced in the coming days.

In a recent interview with the club website, Fortes had talked about what motivated him to represent Cape Verde despite his eligibility to play for France.

"I was indeed born in France. But my parents are both from Cape Verde,” he said.

“In 2015, the national team of Cape Verde came to ask if I wanted to play for them. Since then, I was often part of the selection and collected six caps.

“For me, it is an honour to represent my parents' country. During the last international break, unlike teammate Kenny Rocha, I was not there because of my injury.

“Fortunately, my country won both qualifiers for the World Cup in 2022. We are in second place in our pool. So, there's a chance we qualify.
