Man City's Blunt Attack Has Been Their Downfall This Season

The Reds boss has opened up about his appreciation of the Italian, who has his side flying at the start of the new campaign

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes his thoughts on Carlo Ancelotti were never a secret as he reinforced his great respect for the Everton coach.

Ancelotti currently has the Toffees flying high in the Premier League with four wins from their first four games of the new season.

Klopp's reigning champions meanwhile will look to bounce back from a 7-2 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa when they travel to Goodison Park on Saturday.

The German coach has previously come up against Ancelotti in the Bundesliga and Champions League, with Klopp's admiration for his counterpart clear for all to see.

"Top team, top manager. What I think about Carlo Ancelotti was never a secret," Klopp told Premier League Productions. "I couldn't respect him more as a person and as a coach. He's a wonderful human being, to be honest.

"I knew from the first day when I heard that he will sign for Everton, I thought, 'Ah, the next proper challenger in line.'

"Now I think they did perfect business in the summer. They found pretty much exactly the players they needed to improve an already pretty good football team. Together with being more used to what Carlo wants them to do makes them a pretty strong team. I'm really not surprised about the way they play."

Recent Merseyside derbies at Goodison Park have generally been quite tight affairs with their previous meeting at the ground ending 0-0 in June.

Klopp admits away games against the Toffees have been difficult in the past but is determined for his side to still approach them the right way.

"Of course it's different but in the end, that's one thing. It's what you think in the morning of a derby day but then during the day you have to make sure that you do the right things again because the pure football things are not different to other games," Klopp said.

"Now people will say, 'try and do it different' because we were not unbelievably successful at Goodison in the last few years – we didn't lose a lot but we didn't win a lot there, that's true as well.

"The games were not highest quality – neither Everton or us played their best football in these games. But I think we still should give it a try. The home games for us were obviously different so far but they were difficult anyway as well."

Marcus Rashford calls for racist abusers to have social media accounts immediately deleted

The ex-Dynamo Moscow attacker has responded to claims of alleged abuse during a tennis match in Accra

Former Ghana international Baffour Gyan has rejected allegations of assault levelled against him and his brother, the Black Stars all-time caps holder Asamoah Gyan after a tennis match in Accra on Wednesday.

The incident allegedly occurred following a singles match between Asamoah Gyan and complainant Godwin Martey, where Baffour acted as the umpire, according to the report on Myjoyonline.

Baffour denied the allegations on Pure FM radio.

”I and Asamoah Gyan didn’t throw our hands at Godwin Martey. It was just an exchange of words. The tempers were high, so some of the words were harsh and I apologise for that but we didn’t fight him physically. How can we fight at the soldier’s premises?” Baffour responded to the allegations on Pure FM.

According to Myjoyonline, Godwin became frustrated during the game because of decisions by umpire Baffour Gyan.

Martey has since threatened to sue the Gyans on charges of assault.

Myjoyonline reports a complaint has been lodged at the Cantonment Police Station in Accra.

Neal Maupay Dropped From Brighton Squad Amid Concerns Over Attitude

The veteran Argentine is known for his prolific goalscoring, but is keen to become more of a team player in the latter years of his career

Lionel Messi says he is now “less obsessed with goals” during this stage of his career and is more focused on being a team player.

The 33-year-old is Barcelona’s all-time record goalscorer, with 635 goals in 734 appearances, as well as contributing 256 assists during his 16-year Barca career.

The Argentine has become increasingly proficient at setting up his team-mates in recent years and last season he broke the record for the most assists in a single La Liga campaign, laying on 21 goals for his team-mates.

“Today I am less obsessed with goals, I try to contribute as much as I can to the team effort,” he told magazine Garganta Poderosa.

Messi also highlighted the community work taking place back in his native Argentina to try and combat the devastating impact of coronavirus.

"In this pandemic, we must maintain all the basic necessities like water, food and electricity,” added the striker, who donated around €1 million (£907,000/$1.2m) earlier this year to help combat coronavirus, split between a Barcelona hospital and medical facilities back in his homeland.

“It makes me proud to see how people are getting involved with working in community kitchens and dining halls in Argentina, especially in such tough times as we are going through.

"Inequality is the biggest problem of our society and we should all work together to fix this."

Messi also said that any trophies Barcelona win this year would be in honour of those battling Covid-19.

"The copas that are raised this year should be for all the people who are involved to help in that way," he said.

Messi has scored one goal in three appearances for Barca this season, after a turbulent summer that saw him hand in a transfer request following Barca’s 8-2 defeat by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.

The striker – who has a €700 million release clause – was heavily linked to Premier League giants Manchester City, before ultimately deciding to remain at Camp Nou.

Choupo-Moting grabs brace on Bayern Munich debut against Duren

The Cameroon international announced his arrival at Allianz Arena in style, scoring twice against the Blue and Yellow

Eric Choupo-Moting scored a brace on his Bayern Munich debut in their 3-0 victory over Duren in Thursday’s Cup tie.

The 31-year-old teamed up with the Bavarians earlier this month after turning down a chance to extend his stay with French champions Paris Saint-Germain.

The forward spent two years with PSG and delivered impressive performances for the club, including his fine showings against Atalanta in the Champions League, where he inspired his side to the quarter-finals, scoring the match-winning goal in the encounter.

Choupo-Moting was left out of Cameroon’s international friendly against Japan to enable him to adapt at his new clubs.

The centre-forward was handed a starting role against the Blue and Yellow and wasted no time to announce himself in Germany with his display at Allianz Arena.

The Cameroon international combined well with French-born Senegalese forward Bouna Sarr, who also arrived at Allianz Arena this summer, to open the scoring in the 24th minute.

Thomas Mueller doubled Bayern Munich lead before Choupo-Moting sealed the victory with his second in the encounter.

The centre-forward fired home a superb effort past goalkeeper Kevin Jackmuth after benefitting from another Sarr assist.

Choupo-Moting was then replaced by Jann-Fiete Arp in the 77th minute of the encounter after inspiring the Hans-Dieter Flick’s men to a fine start in the tournament.

The attacker will hope to continue his outstanding displays when Bayern take on Arminia Bielefeld in their next Bundesliga game on Saturday.

Choupo-Moting had previously played for Hamburger, Mainz 05, Schalke 04 and Stoke City before joining PSG, where he won two league titles, Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue before leaving the club.

The attacker will hope to help the Champions League winners and Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich win more laurels in the 2020-21 campaign.

Cote d'Ivoire's Josee Nahi and Ines Nehry lead Gyeongju to South Korean title play-off

The Ivorian forwards were in good form as their side wrapped up the regular season with a win over Suwon on Thursday

Ines Nehry and Josee Nahi shined for Gyeongju as they earned a 1-0 win against Suwon in Thursday's South Korean WK League game.

The Cote d'Ivoire internationals were handed places in the starting XI as their side aimed to leapfrog Incheon Red Angels to finish at the top should the holders slip up against Hwacheon KSPO.

As expected, Gyeongju started the better side as both teams played on a cautious note, though the hosts had the upper hand in terms of ball possession at Gyeongju Sports Complex.

There was very little to write home about in terms of clear cut chances in the first half, though Gyeongju seized the initiative in the latter stages of the half, with pressure on the visitors' defence.

With the first-half ending in a barren draw, there was some level of urgency at the start of the second as the hosts continued to pile pressure on their opponents but could not find a breakthrough.

The persistence of last season's vice-champions eventually paid off when Seo Ji-Yeon struck from the edge of the box to grab the winner for Gyeongju three minutes from time.

Nahi and compatriot Nehry were in action for the duration on their 21st appearance for Gyeongju, with both scoring five and three goals respectively during the regular season.

The victory saw Gyeongju end in second spot on the WK-League table after garnering 55 points from 21 games but they could not leapfrog Incheon Red Angels who won 2-0 to finish top.

A second-place finish means Gyeongju will face off against third-place Suwon in the knockout semi-final of the play-off on November 9.

Winner of the semi-final will lock horns with defending champions Incheon for the title in a two-legged final on November 12.

Duren 0-3 Bayern Munich: Choupo-Moting claims debut double against spirited minnows

Duren 0-3 Bayern Munich: Choupo-Moting claims debut double against spirited minnows

Bayern Munich reached the second round of the DFB-Pokal, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scoring twice on his debut.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored twice on his Bayern Munich bow as the treble winners eased past fifth-tier Duren 3-0 in the first round of the DFB-Pokal.

The international break limited Bayern to a makeshift side, but they comfortably came through a tie postponed until Thursday to allow them to recover from last season's Champions League triumph.

Free transfer signing Choupo-Moting was among those to get his chance and the striker opened the scoring midway through the first half before having a hand in Thomas Muller's penalty.

Duren, the designated home team who decided not to host the fixture, were certainly not embarrassed at Allianz Arena but Choupo-Moting's excellent second sealed victory for the Bundesliga champions.

The minnows had openly targeted simply bettering Barcelona and Schalke by conceding fewer than eight goals, yet they almost struck first as Marc Brasnic nodded straight at Alexander Nubel - another of four Bayern debutants in the starting line-up - after just 23 seconds.

Chances predictably followed at the other end, though, and Choupo-Moting twice might have scored before stabbing Bouna Sarr's square ball past Kevin Jackmuth for the opener.

The former Paris Saint-Germain forward then won a penalty from Joran Sobiech after Jackmuth's poor clearance, allowing Muller to get on the scoresheet from 12 yards.

A sublime Douglas Costa run and shot was met with an equally good save from the goalkeeper, who also kept Choupo-Moting at bay after half-time.

The officials were next to deny Bayern as Choupo-Moting's delicate finish appeared to cross the line before David Putz headed clear, then Jamal Musiala's mazy dribble concluded with a low shot against the post.

Bayern's new striker persisted, however, and turned on the edge of the box to rifle a right-footed shot into the top-left corner and complete the scoring, although there should have been a fourth when Javi Martinez nodded against the upright.

What does it mean? Duren achieve target, Bayern advance

Duren's aim was to be competitive and they were certainly that. Bayern did not test Jackmuth until the 18th minute and gave up eight shots at the other end, while Jerome Boateng was fortunate to win a free-kick after slipping inside his own area late in the first half.

But ultimately, this was comfortable for the Bavarian giants, who had the opportunity to blood new players while progressing to the second round.

Bayern's full-back balance

When fit, Bayern had a settled back four for much of last season, with Benjamin Pavard at right-back. While the World Cup winner is a natural defender, though, he does not offer the same threat as Alphonso Davies going the other way.

That is where Sarr comes in. The full-backs were marauding down both flanks here - Sarr creating two chances, including an assist, with Davies playing one key pass.

Daylight after Duren errors

Jackmuth was largely excellent in the Duren goal, making five saves in all, but his dismal pass set up the attack that led to the second. Sobiech rashly brought Choupo-Moting down and the game was taken out of the underdogs' reach.

What's next?

Bayern go to Arminia Bielefeld in the Bundesliga on Saturday and will aim to take top spot.

How Pellegrini has transformed Real Betis into one of LaLiga's best

The Senegalese striker may not feature for the Stade Saint-Symphorien outfit for the rest of the year

Ligue 1 side Metz have confirmed Ibrahima Niane will be out of action for ‘several months’ after rupturing his cruciate ligament on Wednesday.

The forward has been delivering outstanding performances in the 2020-21 campaign before injury cut short his fine showings.

The 21-year-old Senegalese currently leads the Ligue 1 top-scorer chart with six goals in six appearances for the Maroons, including his first career hat-trick against Lorient on October 4.

The forward’s impressive performances ensured Metz’s 15th place on the league table after two wins, one draw and three losses.

The former Senegal U20 star could now spend the rest of the year on the sidelines following the ligament problem.

“Ibrahima Niane suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in his knee on Wednesday. The Garnet striker will therefore be absent from the elite grounds for several months,” read a statement from the club website.

“The whole of FC Metz are united behind this young striker in this event, and hopes to see him again on the elite grounds as soon as possible.”

Niane arrived at Stade Saint-Symphorien in 2017 from Generation Foot, teaming with the youth setup before he was promoted to the senior side.

The forward has since made more than 90 appearances for the side across all competitions and bagged 11 league goals.

Niane could miss several games for Metz, starting with their Ligue 1 clash against Angers at Stade Raymond-Kopa on Sunday.

The Maroons will be expected to bank on Senegal’s Pape Yade and Mali international Adama Traore during the absence of the 21-year-old.

Niane has featured for Senegal U20 and will hope to continue his impressive showings at club level after his return from injury.

Talking points ahead of this weekend's MTN8 action as Orlando Pirates rely on stability

The Serbian made the statement after his technical bench released the skipper from the team during the international break

Zambia national head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic has revealed why TP Mazembe defender Kabaso Chongo was released during the Fifa break.

Chongo was released just a day after Chipolopolo had lost their second friendly match against Kenya on October 9 and the coach has now stated why he is not ready to tolerate behaviour he considers not right.

“We are determined to establish iron discipline, absolute order, organisation and fanatical hard work with a family atmosphere,” Micho said as quoted by the FAZ Facebook page.

“I would like to say there is nothing personal, there is no issue whatsoever.

“So, for the times ahead of us any player called to the national team not ready for the three case scenario; to play, to sit or be off the bench as per the decision of the technical team, that person is wasting his own time.

“I would like us to function under fanatical hard work because we are far from every person, every player being the best version of himself.

“I would like us to function on absolute order and organisation every minute and moment that we know what we are doing and of course I would like us to function under the iron discipline that whatever is normal we follow and whatever is abnormal is unacceptable.”

The former SC Villa and Orlando Pirates coach likened his job to a driver’s undertaking saying he must understand everyone that is in his team.

“I need to tell you that each and every player and person involved are my personal friends but when it is a question of professional work I put all the emotions aside and strictly put my best as the guardian of Zambia,” the Serbian added.

“When you look at the first thing that I have monitored is the behaviour of the outfield player, outfield behaviour meaning how players are showing belonging to the group? How the chemistry of the group is functioning?

“It is like being a driver of the bus and then you need to look at the situation on the road and how your passengers are behaving in order to know what will happen in the match.”

Zambia played four friendly matches in preparation for the November double-header against Botswana in Afcon qualifiers.

Merry Christmas: Gyan and Boateng join in as Ghana stars celebrate with family photos and warm messages

The former FA chief was speaking on behalf of other stakeholders after the Registrar called for the polls to be conducted according to the law

Sam Nyamweya has termed the planned Football Kenya Federation (FKF) elections as ‘mischievous’ and an ‘illegality’.

Speaking on behalf of allied stakeholders, the former FKF boss echoed the Sports Registrar Rose Wasike’s latest demands made to the federation before holding the national polls on Saturday.

Wasike made clear demands especially on the conduct of the county elections in September and said FKF must follow the laid down procedures before going on to carry its national polls.

“The law of the land must be respected. We must conform with the Sports Act and we have all along been saying this [FKF elections] has been mischievous and you can now see,” Nyamweya told Goal on Thursday.

“Anybody participating in this elections should consider himself participating in illegality and this is a waste of time.”

Among other things that the Sports Registrar raised is the manner of the submission of names of regional elected officials.

“It should be noted that election returns for FKF county/branch elections have not been submitted to my office by the returning officer yet the returning officer and observers needed to do so within seven days from the date the elections were held,” Wasike’s letter to FKF read on Thursday.

“Further, your submission of the newly elected officials was submitted one day after the deadline for submission which ended on 11th October 2020 as it needed to be within 21 days from the date the elections were held.”

Wasike further claimed the new office bearers could have been elected without getting due clearance.

“I have also noted that the notification of the newly elected office bearers was not done in the prescribed form ‘R’ set out in the first schedule of the sports registrar regulations as required under paragraph 20(4) of the sports registrar regulations,” the letter continued.

“You, however, submitted the list of officials who were elected without copies of their clearance certificates hence meaning that they vied for positions without the requisite clearance by the above government agencies and therefore they were in violation of Paragraph 20 (2) (f) of the sports registrar regulations.”

Nyamweya did not go for clearance to challenge Nick Mwendwa in the upcoming elections whose fate may now lie uncertain over the new demands.

“In view of the above, it would have been prudent for FKF not to proceed with the planned elections to allow them to put their house in order and conform to the national laws of the country and Fifa Statutes before proceeding with the elections,” the letter concluded.

FKF has attempted to hold the mandatory elections twice but they were stayed by the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) over concerns that were raised by interested parties.

Fenerbahce’s Samatta, KMC’s Kaseja included in Tanzania squad for Tunisia Afcon qualifiers

Former Ghana star Nii Odartey Lamptey shares his thoughts on the Porcupine Warriors' conundrum between the sticks

Former Ghana international Nii Odartey Lamptey has urged Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Felix Annan to fight for the club's No.1 spot amid increased competition for the slot by the Porcupine Warriors' recent acquisition of Razak Abalora.

Kotoko captain Annan, a member of Ghana's squad at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Egypt, has been in the news lately for reportedly falling out with coach Maxwell Konadu who has sensationally handed the starting spot to Ghana U23 shot-stopper Kwame Baah.

There have also been reports of bad blood between Annan and Baah, leading to speculations of an imminent move away from the club by the former.

On Tuesday, competition for the starting spot intensified even further following Kotoko's signing of Ghana goalkeeper Razak Abalora, a day after featuring in a 5-1 defeat of Qatar in a friendly fixture.

“For now Felix Annan has to fight for his position at the club this season," Lamptey told Happy FM.

“If he is not able to reclaim his spot then he should seek other opportunities elsewhere as other clubs will also be interested. He should fight for his position and not give up."

Annan held the No.1 spot until early last season when he lost the role to Baah after a brief time away to tie the knot with his girlfriend.

“You can’t always depend on one goalkeeper. Asante Kotoko are having three very good goalkeepers in all aspects," former Ghana shot-stopper Abukari Damba told Max FM following Kotoko's latest goalkeeping addition.

“Asante Kotoko has gained my respect for the assembly of these excellent goalkeepers.

“They are looking at the department and not the personalities, the goalkeeping position is for specialists and I can see Asante Kotoko according it the necessary importance."

Recently, Annan called out Konadu in an explosive interview, demanding that the coach be bold enough to tell him to his face what he may have done wrong to lose his position.

“Maxwell is a good coach, so it's not even necessary for me to advise him. I believe him, it won’t be like he is favouring Kwame Baah alone," ex-Kotoko goalkeeper Anthony Osei Kwadwo told Silver FM.

"If he [Baah] makes a mistake, he [Konadu] will change him. Same applies to Abalora and the others."

Interestingly, Kotoko's No.1 spot is not a three-man fight as Ghana U20 goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim, who spent last season on loan at Berekum Chelsea, is also in the running.

8/10 Kane scores No. 200 as Spurs bounce back in Europe

The 2014 champions are now on 18 points after six matches in the Tanzanian top-tier

Azam FC maintained their 100% winning record in the Tanzania Mainland League after a 3-0 win over Mwadui.

The Ice-cream Makers came into the match aiming at extending their winning record against the Shinyanga-based side.

The Chimazi-based charges needed 27 minutes to set the ball rolling at the Azam Complex. The in-form Zimbabwean Prince Dube picked Mudathir Yahya in a good position. The Tanzania international passed the ball to Richard Djodi in the danger zone who in turn headed the ball down for Obrey Chirwa to open the scoring.

It happened to be the only goal in the first half with Mwadui being fortunate not to have conceded more.

Azam doubled their advantage in the 61st minute. Yahya managed to release a long ball to Dube who managed to hold off his markers before beating the goalkeeper expertly.

Dube was once again involved two minutes later, putting the defender under pressure and the ball eventually fell to Chirwa who took his time before beating the goalkeeper to score Azam's third.

The one-time champions have now collected 18 points from the six matches played. Defending champions Simba SC are second on the log with 13 points, the same as Yanga SC who are third but with an inferior goal difference.

In another top-tier match played on Thursday, Gwambina FC defeated Mtibwa Sugar 2-0 to move to 10th position.

Having lost their last two matches, it was the Sugar Millers who came into the match determined to get maximum points. However, it was the Mwanza-based side who opened the scoring first.

A goal-bound effort struck a defender's arm in the 20th minute and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Yusuph Dunia rose for the occasion, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to open the scoring for the hosts.

The visiting defenders were caught napping once again with three minutes to go and were caught in a swift counter-attack. Meshack Abraham had all the time to set himself up before unleashing a fierce strike which left the goalkeeper with no chance.

As a result, Mtibwa are now in 13th position with five points from six matches played.

World Cup 2022 qualifiers: When are the Europe, South America, North America, Africa, Asia & Oceania group stage qualifiers?

The shot-stopper seems to be edging closer to joining Bucs, who had Ghanaian keeper Fatau Dauda on their books between 2013 and 2014

Ghana international Richard Ofori is reportedly set to undergo a medical at Premier Soccer League (PSL) giants Orlando Pirates.

This comes after Ofori's current club, Maritzburg United accepted an offer from the Buccaneers, who are keen to reinforce their goalkeeping department.

Bucs have parted ways with French shot-stopper Joris Delle and Ofori is expected to fill the void left by the former Feyenoord player at the Houghton-based giants.

"Ofori is leaving Pietermaritzburg today for Johannesburg. He is expected to sign a three-year contract with Pirates," a source told Kick Off on Thursday.

The 26-year-old had a successful 2019/20 season in which he established himself as one of the best keepers in the country.

Ofori kept 11 clean sheets from 28 league matches and only Pirates shot-stopper Wayne Sandilands and SuperSport United captain Ronwen Williams had more clean sheets with 12 and 13 clean sheets respectively.

The former Legon Cities FC player also played an instrumental role in helping the Team of Choice reach the 2019 Telkom Knockout Cup final where they lost Mamelodi Sundowns.

Bucs have already signed Wayde Jooste (Highlands Park), Collins Makgaka (Baroka FC), Thabang Monare, Thulani Hlatshwayo, Deon Hotto and Terrence Dzvukamanja (all Bidvest Wits).

Meanwhile, Pirates are reportedly in the market for a quality striker with the current transfer window set to close next month.

The Buccaneers are known to be long-term admirers of Bafana Bafana international Bradley Grobler since last year.

However, his current club, SuperSport United are said to have decided to keep the proven goalscorer, who hit the back of the net 17 times across all competitions for the Tshwane giants.

"The club is also searching for a top international striker after SuperSport United decided to keep Grobler," a source told the same publication.

Pirates have parted ways with Zambian forwards Augustine Mulenga and Justin Shonga after they were both deemed surplus to requirements by the club.

The duo struggled for game time under Bucs head coach Josef Zinnbauer in the recent 2019/20 campaign.

The Buccaneers are scheduled to take on Cape Town City in a 2020 MTN8 quarter-final match at Orlando Stadium in Soweto on Saturday.

Liverpool unveil new third kit inspired by European success

The England defender was on the brink of a move to east London on deadline day, but ultimately decided to stay at Stamford Bridge

Fikayo Tomori believes turning down a loan move to West Ham was the best decision for the sake of his career and he is now fully focused on earning a regular place in the Chelsea side.

The Hammers had agreed a deal with Chelsea to sign Tomori on a season-long loan on transfer deadline day earlier this month.

However, the 22-year-old pulled out of the deal shortly before the window closed, choosing instead to fight for his place in west London.

Tomori admits he had wrestled with the idea of leaving Stamford Bridge, but is confident he has made the right decision to stay.

"I had a plan going into this season going off the back of last season," he told the Chelsea Mike’d Up podcast. "Obviously, in football, things change so quickly so I wanted to make sure whatever decision I made was really thought out and to try and do what’s best for me.

“I made the decision in the end to stay, to improve more, get some more games, gain some more experience and try and get to the levels I was at last season.”

Despite being willing to let Tomori move to east London, Chelsea’s stance had been different earlier in the window, having previously rejected offers from Rennes and Everton for the defender.

Tomori admits the uncertainty was frustrating, particularly as the West Ham deal eventually arrived so late.

“I wanted everything to be thought out and I thought about what was happening, especially when we had a few weeks off leading up to the new season,” he added.

“I was talking a lot with my agent, to get some clarity what was going on. With transfers I prefer if it wasn’t last minute, but situations happen where you have to take a decision quickly.

“It was one of those situations and, as you all know, I made a decision to stay.”

Tomori faces intense competition for a first-team place at Stamford Bridge, with Kurt Zouma, Andreas Christensen, Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger and Cesar Azpilicueta among the centre-back options available for boss Lampard.

However, it is a challenge the England international relishes and one he thinks his manager will, too.

“He [Lampard] knows there is a big squad here and its more competitive than last year,” he said.

“We’ve brought in some amazing players and I’m sure the manager is looking forward to working with every single player, to get us to gel as much as we can, try and get some results on the board and close that gap to the top of the table.”

'There are stronger bonds than flattering courtships' - Quagliarella rules out Juventus return

The 21-year-old has promised to keep doing his best as he hopes to become the three-time African champions’ top shot-stopper

Maduka Okoye has set a target of becoming the Nigeria national team's first-choice goalkeeper following his performances against Algeria and Tunisia.

The Sparta Rotterdam shot-stopper was afforded his full debut against the Desert Foxes on Friday and did enough to keep the scoreline at 1-0 at the end of the game, making a number of saves in the encounter.

His showings against the African champions earned him his third Super Eagles cap and second start against Tunisia in Tuesday's friendly.

The 21-year-old again gave a good account of himself in the encounter to ensure the West Africans avoided defeat.

Okoye featured for the entirety of the games as Super Eagles regular goalkeepers Daniel Akpeyi, Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Francis Uzoho were not involved in the matches.

The young shot-stopper is disappointed with his inability to keep a clean sheet in the outings but has promised to keep working hard to become Nigeria top goalkeeper.

“Of course, it’s great and it’s cool playing 90 minutes in the two friendlies. It was not easy games but I am happy with my performance,” Okoye told the Punch.

“In the Algerian game, we conceded in the fifth minute and it was not good. There was too much on our minds.

“A goal that early was bad but we had to keep on going. We kept on going for over 85 minutes. As I said, it’s not nice to concede goals but that’s football.

“I’m happy to be in the team. It’s always better to have a clean sheet but I’m looking forward to more games with the team.

“I will keep doing my thing and do my best and give my coach the reason to make me the Eagles first-choice goalkeeper.”

Nigeria have struggled to replace Vincent Enyeama since his retirement from international duty in October 2015.

Ezenwa was the Super Eagles first-choice goalkeeper during their 2018 World Cup qualifiers but Uzoho was preferred ahead of him at the global tournament.

At the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, Akpeyi was made the first-choice goalkeeper as Nigeria managed to finish third in the competition.

Okoye recently changed his club from Fortuna Dusseldorf II to Eredivise side Sparta Rotterdam in an effort to enjoy top-flight football.

The goalkeeper will hope to deliver impressive performances for his Dutch side to boost his Super Eagles target.

Manchester United set to reward Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with new £9m contract

The new Amakhosi coach starts his reign without two key players, a predicament he is not naturally pleased with

Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt will not be with injured duo Samir Nurkovic and Leonardo Castro in Sunday’s MTN8 quarter-finals against Maritzburg United.

Nurkovic has been injured during the current pre-season preparations while Castro is yet to recover from an injury sustained last season.

“I came here and a lot of these players have been injured,’ Hunt told the media.

“Samir, the top goalscorer, has been injured and he won’t play. He’s had an operation, hasn’t trained a single day and I think he will be out for some time. Castro was obviously also injured before the end of the season. He also hasn’t trained much. I think those are the two major injuries.

“They were the cornerstone of the team last year and had done very well. That is a problem going forward – but we will have to realign ourselves and reshape to play to the strengths of the players that we’ve got, that’s important and I will try and do that."

Hunt arrives at Chiefs on the background of an attractive CV that has seen him winning four league titles.

Expectations on Hunt see him pressed to help Chiefs win the Premier Soccer League (PSL) for the first time since 2015.

It would be a task for Hunt to dislodge reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns who enter the 2020/21 season smarting from winning a third straight league title.

But after Downs lost former coach Pitso Mosimane to Al Ahly, Hunt feels that there will be lesser competition in the league.

Hunt says the Premier Soccer League (PSL) is now “weaker’ following the departure of Mosimane.

“I think‚ certainly from my perspective‚ yes‚ we’ve had some great battles in terms of football battles,” said Hunt.

“I think the league is weaker because you’re losing the fantastic expertise of a fantastic coach who’s done a good job. So I think the league is certainly‚ for me‚ weaker.

“It doesn’t mean that Sundowns are weaker. They’ve certainly strengthened their technical department – they’ve got guys who know.

“And obviously their most important thing is they have the squad of players who can play all different formats‚ different ways‚ different competitions.

“It’s a fantastic club. Kaizer Chiefs have been knocked off a bit and we need to get back‚ certainly up there and challenging and trying to be as competitive as them‚ and I think we can.

“That might take a bit of adjusting and some time. Chiefs were so close last year. You can’t say they gave it away. It certainly was a real fight to the end. But yes‚ certainly the league is weaker and not better off by him leaving‚ that’s for sure.

“He’s gone to a great opportunity and I wished him well‚ and sent him a message. Great challenge. And a club of our size at Chiefs‚ we’ve got to be competing on those fronts.

“I’ve played against Al Ahly many times with an inferior squad than they had‚ and we did very well. And I think with a club of our size and support base‚ we can do well on that front too.”

The ex-England international is involved in an ambitious plan to change the face of the game and its administrators

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville is seeking a comprehensive overhaul of the way English football is run, laying out plans for a Manifesto for Change that looks to introduce more independent regulation in the game.

Neville is part of a group that includes former FA chairman David Bernstein, ex-FA executive director David Davies and Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham which is unhappy with the way football is structured and administered.

The woes of lower league clubs and huge financial power of the Premier League is one of the biggest concerns, with Bury going out of business and Wigan entering administration.

The Manifesto for Change proposes the creation of a new regulatory body as well as greater equality across the football pyramid, with other demands including more interaction with supporters' groups and reforms in the Football Association.

And Neville believes that the problems suffered by the game during the coronavirus pandemic show that it is time for a change.

"The principle is that we don't trust that football can govern itself and create the fairest deal for all, whether that's the Premier League, EFL clubs, non-League clubs or the fans," he explained to Sky Sports.

"It has been proven over this past six months that football has struggled to bring everyone together and proven to be incapable over a 25-30 year period of transforming the money in the game into something that works for everybody.

"I want the best Premier League in the world, but I want sustainable football clubs.

"There is enough money in the game to be able to have an elite Premier League, a sustainable and competitive EFL, money passed down to non-League and grassroots and where fans can get a fair deal.

"That's where an independent regulator, with that spirit at the heart of it, can come in and say 'that's not fair'.

"I know we've got a big task in front of us, but we've got a group of people who love football and want the best for football."

Responding to the manifesto, an FA spokesman told Sky Sports:  "The Football Association plays a vital role in governing and regulating English football and our league structure and ecosystem is the envy of the world. We work hard to maintain this system, with a clear focus on the wider game; not just serving the elite level, but the whole football pyramid and throughout the grassroots game.

"As English football's governing body, it is our responsibility to work together to determine what is best for our game as a whole, with full dialogue between all key stakeholders.

"As we have said this week, any changes have to be done in the right way and with a long-term perspective in mind. We are not interested in any changes that are designed to serve one area of the game, nor will we entertain ideas that are primarily in the interests of the few.

"If the Government would want to amend and increase our responsibilities and powers to further improve the system, then would be happy to discuss that with them, and of course we would consult with the leagues in the process. But most importantly, any changes must benefit clubs, fans and players across the English game.

"The FA has a clear direction and ambitious targets to ensure English football continues to be a force for good across every level of the game."

Married couple take over as coaches at Lazio

After a nail-biting window, the signing of the Ghana star means the Gunners are now in a stronger position than they were at the end of 2019/20

On the morning of Deadline Day, it would have been interesting to be a fly on the wall anywhere Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was situated.

From the outside looking in, you’d have to believe one of the Gabon star’s requests before penning his three-year extension in mid-September was to have the squad strengthened to challenge the big guns in the Premier League.

“Signing for this special club was never in doubt," Auba said after accepting the long-term contract. "It’s thanks to our fans, my teammates, my family and everybody at this club that I feel like I belong here.

“I believe in Arsenal. We can achieve big things together. We have something exciting here and I believe the best is to come for Arsenal.”

However, almost a month after putting pen to paper, the North London giants still couldn’t get significant business done. Of course, Willian had joined on a free soon after 2019/20 ended while the return of Dani Ceballos for another year-long loan added much-needed numbers in midfield.

Regardless, despite the tactical nous of Mikel Arteta, the three-time Premier League champions were still outsiders for a top four finish.

Many Gooners still bemoaned the lack of creativity in the side — which eventually led to the Houssem Aouar or Thomas Partey debates — even though the side had won three of their four opening league games.

When it seemed like Arsenal wouldn’t be adding either on the eve of the window closing, there was a feeling that an opportunity had been lost to strengthen the side to close the gap on Liverpool and Manchester City.

With clubs like Everton seemingly in the mix for an automatic Champions League spot and Tottenham Hotspur’s ostensibly resurgent, the Gunners were in danger of falling short in their quest to return to Europe’s premier club competition.

Then came hope on D-Day, as it was revealed that the red half of North London had made serious moves to get the Ghanaian’s deal done before the deadline.

Despite the acceptance that bringing in Aouar to solve the side’s creativity issues was more pressing, Partey’s arrival was embraced and endorsed.

After all, before the Aouar rumours gathered momentum, the West African was said to be Arteta’s primary transfer target. So, getting the 27-year-old in gave the side the desired experience in central and defensive midfield.

Given Partey’s education under Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid, the midfielder is already astute in his own defensive third and has combined that with his strengths in possession to become one of the rare rounded players in that position.

With someone of the Black Star’s profile, Arteta now has the option of sticking to the 3-4-3 he’s utilised post-lockdown, reverting to the 4-2-3-1 he actually started with as Arsenal boss without being concerned about his team’s pivot pairing or even playing the 4-3-3 many believe is the Spaniard’s eventual target.

The 2018 Europa League winner isn’t only adept at sitting at the base of the midfield, fulfilling a dual role of protecting the defence and spraying forward passes to the attackers, he’s equally skilled at carrying out a more creative and goalscoring role in the side.

While the former shone in Partey’s time with Los Colchoneros, the inventive side of his game usually shines through in a Ghana shirt. There’s a feeling, however, that Arteta has brought him into the Arsenal team to replicate something close to what he produced in an Atletico shirt.

Bringing in the West African midfielder enhances the Gunners’ play in midfield and progressive play while it similarly adds a bit of steel in the middle of the park.

He may not be as creative as the Olympique Lyonnais attacking midfielder Gooners preferred but Partey — who’s already liked — is no slouch and solidifies Arsenal’s spine in their push to immediately compete again domestically and subsequently on the continent.

Having had their short and medium-term ambition questioned by fans in the last few years and especially Aubameyang more recently, the club recent targets and consequent acquisition of one of Europe’s top midfielders is restoring faith in the club’s higher-ups.

They’ve signed Gabriel this summer, brought in Partey, handed the hugely talented Bukayo Saka an extended contract and convinced their talismanic skipper his future lay at the club despite reported overtures from clubs on the continent, thus adding to and strengthening their spine.

Arsenal are not where they want to be just yet, however, they look to be on track and it’s hard to not get on board with the optimism surrounding the club seeking to challenge the heavy-hitters at home and abroad.
