Brazil-Argentina game suspended after health authorities attempt to detain visiting players mid-game

The two South American giants played just five minutes before the game ended in bizarre circumstances

Brazil and Argentina's World Cup qualifier was thrown into chaos on Sunday when health authorities attempted to detain several members of the visiting team, causing the game to be suspended.

Emiliano Martinez, Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso were cleared to play the World Cup qualifier despite being accused of falsifying travel information upon their entry to Brazil, with mandatory quarantine and deportation advised by the Brazilian government for the trio and reserve Emiliano Buendia.

The match had barely passed five minutes when scores of officers stormed the pitch, to the incredulity of both teams.

What happened?

The game in Sao Paulo's Arena Corinthians kicked off as scheduled on Sunday, with Brazil out for revenge after July's Copa America final reverse.

Argentina's Premier League trio had travelled with the rest of the squad to the stadium earlier in the day in spite of Brazilian health authority Anvisa's statement forbidding them from partaking in any activities and ordering immediate isolation before leaving the country.

With five minutes gone, a number of plain-clothed police and health officers suddenly entered the playing surface to apprehend Martinez, Romero, Buendia and Lo Celso.

"It was necessary to keep our sanitary protocol," said Antonio Barra Torres, the head of the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (via Rede Globo). "We called the federal police, that went to the hotel and we found out that they had already left for the Stadium. The rest is what you're watching live."

They were prevented from doing so by the players' Argentina team-mates, causing an unseemly scuffle as the game was halted.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi promptly led his side back down the tunnel to the dressing rooms, and CONMEBOL confirmed the action would not re-commence.

Messi did emerge a few minutes later to consult with his Brazil counterparts, most of whom remained on the Arena Corinthians turf.

Health officials say they are still after the trio.

Why were the players pursued?

The wanted trio and Buendia came from the United Kingdom, which is one of the countries on Brazil's own red list.

Under national law, foreign travellers from the country must complete 14 days' quarantine once they have landed.

The Argentine Premier League contingent, however, only declared that they had been to Caracas, the site of the Albiceleste's last World Cup qualifier against Venezuela, and did not reveal to immigration and health authorities that they had been in the UK.

While Martinez, Romero, Buendia and Lo Celso had received dispensation from their clubs to leave England other CONMEBOL nations were not so lucky, with Brazil losing nine of their squad for these qualifiers as a result of the division's refusal to release players to red list countries.

The Arsenal youngster struck the final goal of his nation's 4-0 win after returning to Wembley for the first time since Euro 2020 final defeat

England youngster Bukayo Saka was over the moon with his birthday goal at Wembley on Sunday, as the Three Lions made short work of Andorra to continue their perfect start to World Cup qualifying.

Gareth Southgate's men ran out 4-0 winners in a one-sided match, with Jesse Lingard netting twice and Harry Kane scoring from the penalty spot before Saka notched the final goal of the afternoon.

It made for a happy day for the Arsenal star, whose last experience of Wembley turned into a nightmare.

What was said?

Saka was one of three England players who missed penalties in July's shoot-out as Italy beat the hosts to the Euro 2020 title.

The Arsenal man was given a rousing reception on his return to Wembley, which left him feeling good after the abuse he received following the final.

"The perfect birthday present for me. I am really happy we got the win and I can celebrate my birthday with this," he told ITV.

"I am really happy with the reception everyone gave me, it shows how proud they are of me and that meant a lot. It means a lot, it really made a difference for me. Even now I can hear fans chanting my name. It means everything to me that I know they support me.

"This is what I dream about, playing at Wembley in front of my family and this crowd and scoring on my 20th birthday."

Southgate's view

England boast a perfect 15 points from 15 so far in Group I of the UEFA qualifying competition, nine points clear of closest rivals Albania.

Speaking after the match, England boss Southgate admitted he was also thrilled with the treatment afforded to Saka from the stands.

"He got a fabulous reception before the game and during the game. It is lovely, you can see how popular he is with the team as well," Southgate told ITV. "I hope closure if it was needed but I don't think there is a player in that dressing room who thinks anything but positively about what he did all summer."

Argentina make three changes of their own from the side that earned a 3-1 victory over Venezuela three days ago. The right side of defence is reworked as Romero and Montiel replace Pezzella and Nahuel Molina at centre and full-back respectively, while an alteration in midfield sees Paredes start over Rodriguez.

Tite makes three changes to the Brazil XI that beat Chile 1-0 last time out. Verissimo gives Marquinhos a break at centre-back, while Vinicius is dropped to the bench in favour of Ribeiro on the right. The final change comes in central midfield, where Bruno Guimaraes is kept on the bench allowing Gerson to start.

ARGENTINA SUBS: Geronimo Rulli, Juan Musso, Juan Foyth, Nicolas Tagliafico, German Pezzella, Exequiel Palacios, Joaquin Correa, Alejandro Gomez, Guido Rodriguez, Angel Correa, Nicolas Gonzalez, Paulo Dybala.

ARGENTINA XI (4-3-3): Emiliano Martinez; Marcos Acuna, Nicolas Otamendi, Cristian Romero; Gonzalo Montiel; Giovani Lo Celso, Leonardo Paredes, Rodrigo De Paul; Angel Di Maria, Lautaro Martinez, Lionel Messi.

BRAZIL SUBS: Aderbar Santos, Everson, Leo Ortiz, Miranda, Guilherme Arana, Bruno Guimaraes, Dani Alves, Edenilson, Vinicius Junior, Matheus Cunha, Hulk, Arthur Guimaraes.

BRAZIL XI (4-4-2): Weverton; Danilo, Lucas Verissimo, Eder Militao, Alex Sandro; Everton Ribeiro, Casemiro, Gerson, Lucas Paqueta; Gabriel Barbosa, Neymar.

With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let’s take a look at how the two sides are lining up - starting with our hosts!

Argentina travel to Brazil looking for a win that will cut the host’s lead to three points as Lionel Scaloni’s side sit a distant second. The Albiceleste will enter today’s contest in bright spirits, having beaten Tite’s side at home to lift the Copa America just 57 days ago. Undefeated in all competitions since a 2-0 loss to the Selecao in 2019, it will take quite the performance to wrestle all three points from the champions of South America.

Group leaders Brazil welcome bitter rivals Argentina to Sao Paulo, looking to go nine points clear at the top of the group. The Selecao, who have won all seven of their opening fixtures, have gone four matches unbeaten in World Cup qualifying against Argentina since a 3-0 loss in 2005. With three clean sheets in their last four matches, Tite’s key to victory will certainly be a packed and resolute defence at one end, with Neymar’s magic at the other.

The 53-year-old tactician explains why the Harambee Stars still have a chance to qualify for the global showpiece after a second successive draw

Harambee Stars coach Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee has maintained they are still in the race to qualify for the 2022 Fifa World Cup despite picking up their second successive draw against Rwanda in the qualifiers on Sunday.

Kenya went into the game against Amavubi after drawing 0-0 against Uganda in their Group E opener and they took the lead courtesy of captain Michael Olunga in the 10th minute, but the hosts fought back and managed to equalise courtesy of Abdul Rwatubyaye in the 20th minute.

Despite starting their campaign with two draws, Mulee, who in an interview before Kenya took on Uganda vowed to help the team grace the competition in Qatar, has maintained they are still in the race to snatch the slot.

What did Mulee say?

“It is our second game and Rwanda is a good side and we have seen the way they played in the second half, they enjoyed the pace and possession but I think we scored the first goal then we lost concentration and conceded from a corner to allow them into the game,” Mulee told Goal after the game.

“But we also looking into the game created a lot of chances mostly from our captain, yes he scored a goal but he also had other opportunities to score a second goal and we can blame this draw on lack of utilising our chances in this game.

“Otherwise it is not fair because looking at both sides not having won their first games and coming back to Rwanda and we pick up a point, it is tight but we are still in the race for the World Cup, it is just not done yet, so we are still on, two games played and we go to Morocco for the Mali game and that will determine which way it will go.”

What next for Harambee Stars?

The 53-year-old tactician continued: “We will also wait for the game tomorrow [Monday] when Mali play against Uganda, we will also wait for that result to see what happens because with two games and two points it is not a bad start.

“We would have loved to win the games but we did our best and now we have to plan on how to face Mali back-to-back, we go to Morocco and then they come back to Nairobi.

“We are ready to face them in Nairobi but let us wait and see what happens in the first meeting in Morocco first.”

The Cranes will face Mali, who beat Rwanda 1-0 in their opener, at St Mary’s Kitende Stadium in Kampala.

5' OFF THE BAR! Kehrer rises highest at a corner that is whipped into the penalty area by Kimmich and the centre-back powers a header towards the top left corner of the net. However, he gets slightly too much on it and the ball skims the crossbar and flies over.

LIVE: Spain vs Georgia

56' Spain's fullbacks, Gaya and Azpilicueta, are getting forward at every opportunity and trying to cause problems for the visiting defence. Gaya has now been involved in seven goals in his previous 11 starts for Spain - scoring three goals and assisting four.

54' Kashia comes to the rescue for Georgia as he concedes a corner while clearing Ferran Torres' cross. Without that block, Ruiz had a tap-in at the far post.

50' It is as we were. Spain are dominating possession and looking to find another goal; Georgia are defending for their lives and trying to keep the scoreline at 3-0. Let's see who wins this battle in the next 40 minutes!

47' We are back underway!

Georgia were always expected to lose this fixture tonight, and they will be playing for pride in the second half. Sagnol's side are not really doing anything in attack, so they have 45 minutes to try and keep the scoreline at 3-0.

Spain deservedly lead at the break, and there's every chance they add to their tally in the second 45 minutes. Georgia did what they could to keep them at bay for ten minutes, but Gaya opened the scoring four minutes later. His deflected shot sent Loria the wrong way, before Soler made it two-nil in the 25th minute. He converted Llorente's cross, who also played a part in Torres' third goal, with the latter finishing from a tight angle.

45' + 2' HALF-TIME - SPAIN 3-0 GEORGIA.

45' Two minutes of stoppage time to come...

43' A pretty perfect first-half for Spain so far. Georgia have not tested Simon in goal, and they have got themselves into a groove in front of goal.

38' Sarabia tries his luck from range, but he fails to generate any power, and Loria easily saves his left-footed strike.

33' GOAL DISALLOWED!!! Spain fire home for a third time, but Gaya's second goal of the night is chalked off. Torres was the man who teed him up, but it was the Manchester City player who strayed offside.

30' We have our first cooling break!

27' Georgia find themselves fighting against the tide with over an hour left of this match!

24' Rodri has been instrumental in Spain's game plan so far, and thanks to him, they continue to churn out attack after attack. Georgia need to try and stop him from finding so much space before it is too late.

22' CLOSE!!! Ferran Torres teases the Georgian backline with a mazy run before crossing the ball via a backheel, but the visitors clear the danger before Ruiz could pull the trigger.

19' Gaya is clearly in the mood tonight as he tries to beat Loria at his near post, only to see the goalkeeper fumble his shot before diving on the loose ball.

17' Georgia need to be careful here before the floodgates open, they will feel hard done by, but if they lose their shape or take too many risks, they will soon find themselves two or even three behind.

13' Georgia are starting to open up a little bit more when in possession, but their latest attack is thwarted by some good work in defence from Spain as they rushed back to block Azarovi's cross.

10' Georgia launch a rare counter-attack just as the 10th-minute mark approaches, but Davitashvili ruins their momentum when he gives away a free-kick while trying to get goal-side of Gaya.

8' Georgia know they are up against it tonight, and to try and neutralise the home side, they have everybody behind the ball. Spain are one of the best teams in Europe but they will need to be sharp and accurate if they are to find a way through the congested midfield.

5' Loria makes his first save of the match as he comes off of his line to catch Gaya's cross as Spain made their way to the edge of the Georgia box.

3' We are only a couple of minutes into this World Cup qualifier, and Georgia have barely had a touch of the ball, with Spain just building out from the back so far.

1' We are underway in Badajoz!

Kick-off is fast approaching in Spain, with both teams now on the field, and they are waiting for the national anthems.

Luis Enrique makes five changes from the team that lost to Sweden as Gaya, Rodrigo, Llorente, Sarabia and Ruiz replace Alba, Busquets, Koke, Morata and Moreno. Georgia coach Willy Sagnol also rings the changes as Giorbelidze, Zaria, Lochoshvili, Mamuchashvili and Lobzhanidze come into the starting XI in place of Khocholava, Tsitaishvilli, Qazaishvili, Kiteishvili and Kvilitaia.

SUBS: Giorgi Chakvetadze, Otar Kakabadze, Lazare Kupatadze, Jambul Jigauri, Valeri Qazaishvili, Zuriko Davitashvili, Heorhii Tsitaishvili, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Giorgi Kvilitaia, Davit Khocholava, Georges Mikautadze, Sandro Altunashvili.

GEORGIA (4-2-3-1): Giorgi Loria; Grigol Chabradze, Guram Kashia, Guram Giorbelidze, Irakli Azarovi; Giorgi Aburjania, Jaba Kankava, Giorgi Zaria, Luka Lochoshvili, Vladimer Mamuchashvili; Saba Lobzhanidze.

SUBS: Jordi Alba, Adama Traore, Robert Sanchez, Sergio Busquets, Pablo Fornals, Koke, Brais Mendez, Inigo Martínez, Avaro Morata, David de Gea, Mikel Merino, Raul Albiol.

SPAIN XI (4-3-3): Unai Simon; Cesar Azpilicueta, Eric Garcia, Aymeric Laporte, Jose Gaya; Carlos Soler, Rodrigo, Marcos Llorente; Pablo Sarabia, Abel Ruiz, Ferran Torres.

Spain showed signs of rustiness as they let a 1-0 lead slip against Sweden, but they will fancy their chances of putting Georgia to the sword this evening in Badajoz. These two sides have met on four occasions in the past, with Spain winning three of those meetings, including a 2-1 success in March.

Despite their midweek defeat to Sweden, La Roja are still second in Group B with seven points from four matches. Georgia have only managed to pick up one point from their first four games, losing 1-0 to Kosovo on Thursday.

Hello and welcome to tonight's live coverage of the 2022 World Cup qualifier between Spain and Georgia. The home side will be hoping to bounce back from Thursday's disappointing defeat to Sweden, while Georgia are looking for their first win in qualifying.

LIVE: Switzerland vs Italy

90' + 3' Fassnacht gets a ball to the face as Chiellini tries to punt the ball clear. Chiellini has been as rock solid at the back for Italy as ever.

90' + 2' There'll be four more minutes of this. Can't we bring the golden goal rule back, just this once?

89' Vargas reaches the byline and wins a corner off Bonucci. Again Italy stand firm. Italy want to make a few more changes to see this result out. They'll make those now.

86' Chiesa skips two challenges and finally goes down to a shoulder barge from Zakaria just outside the box. The referee pulls play back and penalises Frei for his slightly wild tackle that caught Chiesa but didn't stop the attack.

85' Italy get through Switzerland's latest corner without much difficulty as Donnarumma saves Zakaria's shot from distance. This game has been fun in this second half.

84' Chance for Switzerland! Zakaria turns away from Chiellini in the box and lashes an effort towards the bottom right corner. Donnarumma makes the stop. Chiellini hauls Zakaria to his feet and gives him a hug in admiration.

82' Chiesa jinks inside from the right and blasts a shot against Zakaria for the corner. Sommer is at it again and pushes Zaniolo's corner away at his near post. He's great to watch.

80' Jorginho hands Switzerland possession with a slack pass. Fassnacht tries to make progress down the right for Switzerland but finds his path to goal blocked off. There's a growing tension in this match now.

78' Insigne looks to free Barella but Barella is offside. Zaniolo loses an aerial duel to Elvedi and pushes the defender over in an attempt to gain the ball. A Switzerland free-kick is the result.

76' Switzerland are growing in confidence. Garcia fires across goal from the left and it goes out for another Switzerland corner off Di Lorenzo. Italy survive as Frei has another shot blocked from the right of the box. Mancini is furious down on the touchline. His team can't afford to switch off now.

74' Switzerland get a free-kick as Di Lorenzo scythes down Vargas near the corner flag. The hosts send it in and Seferovic has a header blocked. The ball comes out to Frei who has stars in his eyes and Italy charge that down too.

72' Sommer is ridiculously good. Insigne reaches Locatelli's pass and scuffs a left-footed effort towards goal. Sommer tips it up with one hand and gets up quickly to stop it from looping over him into the net. Insigne throws his arms up as if to ask what he has to do to beat this goalkeeper.

69' Italy clear Vargas' cross from the left. Widmer follows up with another dangerous ball in and Italy get rid of that too. Switzerland are definitely looking to bombard Italy aerially.

66' Switzerland are cutting it fine. First Elvedi comes across to stop Insigne from shooting from the left of the box. Seconds later Akanji barges Insigne off the ball, also in the penalty area. Neither incident ends in an Italy penalty.

65' There's a brief lull as the sides adjust to all the recent changes. Steffen flings a cross into Italy's box and Italy head clear.

61' The two teams exchange shots on goal. Steffen fires over from distance and Sommer comfortably saves Emerson's scuffed effort from the left.

57' Switzerland take the corner short and force Italy to hand them another corner. This is a good spell for the Swiss. Italy attempt to break and Aebischer brings the attack to an end with a cynical foul on Barella.

56' Zuber's played in to the left of the box and lashes wide of the right-hand post. It takes a deflection so Switzerland will get a corner.

54' Rodriguez gives away the ball high up the pitch and Frei steams in to hand Italy a free-kick. Italy may have missed a penalty but they've still been on top in this second half so far.

50' PENALTY FOR ITALY! Rodriguez's poor touch gives Italy possession right on the edge of their box. Berardi checks inside on his left foot and gets caught by Rodriguez's sliding tackle. VAR takes a look and confirms the penalty after the referee points to the spot.

49' Seferovic tracks back and bundles Jorginho off the ball. It's an obvious free-kick.

47' Sommer punts upfield with Italy closing in around his box. The visitors will know they can up their game after that first half.

45' Italy get the second half going. Neither side has made changes at half-time.

Italy had five shots in that first half, three of them on target, but haven't been able to beat Sommer yet. Switzerland have only had one chance, Akanji's header wide not long before half-time, but you sense they could catch the European champions out if they're not careful.

It's all square between Switzerland and Italy at half-time in what has been a fairly even affair so far. Italy have had the better of the chances, but Switzerland have held their own and Sommer has proven to be more than a match for the visitors.

45' + 3' HALF-TIME: SWITZERLAND 0-0 ITALY

45' + 3' Chiellini and Bonucci come up for the free-kick. Insigne swings it in and Sommer pushes it over the crossbar! Insigne definitely intended to go for goal there. The referee immediately blows for half-time.

45' + 2' Emerson sends Immobile scampering down Italy's left. Akanji slides in on Immobile and gives away a free-kick right near the corner flag. The Swiss are unhappy as they think Akanji won the ball.

45' + 1' There'll be two minutes added onto the end of this first half.

45' Steffen's penalised for backing into Emerson while the pair tussle for an aerial ball. The crowd whistle their disapproval.

43' The Swiss are growing in momentum as we approach half-time. Zuber's cross from the left sails over Seferovic and out of play for an Italy goal-kick.

42' Chance for Switzerland! Akanji heads just wide of the left-hand post from the set-piece. That's as close as the Swiss have come to scoring so far.

40' Switzerland get a free-kick as Chiellini charges in on Steffen, taking out the winger as he plays a first-time pass to Seferovic down the right. Seferovic initially tries to play on but the referee pulls things back when it's clear the Swiss have no advantage.

39' Barella leaves the pitch briefly as he continues to receive treatment. Di Lorenzo puts the ball out for a Switzerland throw near his own corner flag. Barella is back on now.

38' Barella takes a knock as he collides with Sow and stays down rolling around in pain. Switzerland are frustrated to put the ball out of play, giving they had a promising attack building. Barella receives some magic spray to his knee.

36' Italy are getting closer. Akanji's defensive header loops for Insigne who swipes at it in an attempt to make a connection. It's not powerful enough and Sommer catches it.

34' Insigne comes close to giving Italy the lead, latching onto Locatelli's pass to curl an effort just wide of the top right corner of Sommer's goal.

33' Insigne plays a nice ball over the top in an attempt to free Immobile. Sommer spots the danger and races out to boot it clear.

31' Switzerland get a corner as Rodriguez's cross takes a wicked deflection off Di Lorenzo and almost creeps past Donnarumma at his near post. Italy see it out.

29' Aebischer beats Chiellini down Switzerland's right but is tripped by the Italy captain. Switzerland get a free-kick. They've caused Italy some problems so far.

28' Seferovic takes a tumble in Italy's penalty area after muscling his way in to win a header. The referee takes a good look at it and decides to let play continue.

27' Steffen clips the heels of Locatelli and brings him down in Italy's half. The home crowd groan in frustration.

25' Widmer has the space down the right to fling a cross towards goal. Donnarumma has it covered. Up the other end, Sommer sweeps up a Berardi cross with Immobile lurking.

23' Italy work the ball wide right to Berardi who this time cuts inside and goes for goal on his left foot. Sommer drops low to catch the shot at his near post.

22' Insigne casually swings a right-footed cross into the penalty area from the left. It's no problem for Sommer.

20' Berardi beats Rodriguez and drills a low cross across the face of goal. It doesn't find a teammate though.

18' Zuber charges down Switzerland's left and forces Di Lorenzo to give away a corner. Rodriguez's corner is intended for the far post but ends up finding no one in Swiss colours and Italy can counter! Berardi races through on goal but can't beat Sommer at close range! Switzerland survive.

16' Seferovic almost gets on the end of a cross into Italy's box. Emerson requires treatment after powering down the left and being brought down by Steffen.

14' Berardi makes progress down the right and squares the ball for Insigne. Insigne's body shape is all wrong though and he blazes over from just inside the box.

12' Chance for Italy! Immobile sneaks behind Switzerland's back line and gets a shot away but it's blocked. The rebound lands to Insigne whose shot bounces up into Sommer's arms.

11' Italy are passing the ball around without really getting anywhere. Seferovic almost gets lucky as Emerson's crossfield pass to Bonucci hits his head but the ball deflects kindly into the path of Donnarumma.

9' Italy keep hold of the ball in their own defensive third, attracting boos from the Swiss home support. Emerson tries to escape the attentions of Steffen and ends up getting caught for his trouble, winning a free-kick.

7' Chiellini looks to play a pass down the line for Insigne but it's unsuccessful. Italy keep the pressure on and Sommer eventually punts the ball out for a throw-in.

5' Insigne darts inside and finds himself on the receiving end of Sow's outstretched foot. The free-kick goes Italy's way.

3' Switzerland clear the free-kick but Italy come away with possession. They soon hand it back to the Swiss though.

2' Aebischer gives away the first foul of the game, stopping Barella from beating him during an Italy counter-attack.

1' Switzerland get this game underway!

The two teams are out on the pitch at a packed St. Jakob-Park. Switzerland are wearing their all-red home colours. Italy will play wearing all-white.

There are four changes to Italy's line-up from their draw with Bulgaria. Their captain Chiellini starts in defence. Di Lorenzo, Locatelli and Berardi also come in.

Switzerland boss Murat Yakin makes five changes to the side that defeated Greece 2-1 in their friendly match four days ago as Switzerland change to four at the back. Their defence has more of a first-choice feel about it as Akanji, Elvedi and Sommer, heroes of their run to the Euro 2020 quarter-finals, come in.

SUBS: Nicolo Zaniolo, Matteo Pessina, Giacomo Raspadori, Bryan Cristante, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Salvatore Sirigu, Marco Verratti, Alessandro Bastoni, Federico Chiesa, Rafael Toloi, Davide Calabria, Pierluigi Gollini.

ITALY (4-3-3): Gianluigi Donnarumma; Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini (c), Emerson; Nicolo Barella, Jorginho, Manuel Locatelli; Domenico Berardi, Ciro Immobile, Lorenzo Insigne.

SUBS: Ulisses Garcia, Sandro Lauper, Fabian Schar, Andi Zeqiri, Dan Ndoye, Cedric Zesiger, Christian Fassnacht, Yvon Mvogo, Jordan Lotomba, Ruben Vargas, Gregor Kobel, Denis Zakaria.

SWITZERLAND (4-3-2-1): Yann Sommer (c); Silvan Widmer, Nico Elvedi, Manuel Akanji, Ricardo Rodriguez; Michel Aebischer, Djibril Sow, Fabian Frei; Renato Steffen, Steven Zuber; Haris Seferovic.

Italy's 1-1 draw with Bulgaria a few days ago showed that the European champions are not infallible. Roberto Mancini's team remain four points clear at the top of Group C though and will be looking to get back to winning ways here, as well as making it a record 36 games unbeaten.

The two favourites to qualify for Qatar from Group C face off here as Switzerland welcome Italy to Basel. Switzerland sit second in the group at the moment with two wins from two games. After forcing France and Spain to penalty shootouts at Euro 2020, Switzerland will not be cowed by the competition's eventual winners.

Mamelodi Sundowns player ratings as Erasmus and Shalulile sparkle in Stellenbosch win

The original date of September 6 has been shelved, and it is not clear when the match will eventually be played

FIFA has announced that it has taken the decision to postponed the World Cup qualifier between Guinea and Morocco due to the uncertain political situation of the host country.

The fixture was due to take place on September 6, but no date has been slated for the potential rearranged fixture.

There is a reported coup d’état taking place in Guinea, with reports of gunfire heard in the streets of the capital Conakry, where the fixture was due to take place.

What has been said?

A statement published on FIFA’s website reads: “The current political and security situation in Guinea is quite volatile and is being closely monitored by FIFA and CAF. To ensure the safety and security of all players and to protect all match officials, FIFA and CAF have decided to postpone the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifying match Guinea vs. Morocco, which had scheduled to be hosted in Conakry, Guinea, on Monday 6 September.

“Rescheduling information will be made available at a later date.”

What is the situation in Guinea?

The developing situation in Guinea is unclear, though an unverified video has shown the nation's President Alpha Conde surrounded by soldiers, who claim to have seized power over the country and dissolved the government.

Contrary to those reports, the defence minister is reported by the BBC as having said that an attempted takeover bid has been thwarted following “hours” of heavy gunfire in the capital.

Twice a World Cup manager with Ecuador in 2006 and Honduras in 2014, Luis Fernando Suarez knows his way to get to the showpiece tournament - but he'll be needing some big results on the way to get there.

Los Ticos know that the visit of Mexico represents a prime chance to bolster their standing - and with Keylor Navas in goal, they'll hope to be watertight on home soil.

Predicted Costa Rica starting XI: Navas; Blanco, Duarte, Calvo, Oviedo; Guzman; Marin, Borges, Leal, Lassiter; Ugalde.

Position Mexico roster
Goalkeepers Ochoa, Talavera, Orozco, Cota

El Tri showed that they had no Gold Cup hangover against Jamaica in victory, but Gerardo Martino will know that the result may have flattered his side after Henry Martin's late winner secured them three points.

He'll hope that they respond in suitably impressive fashion, against a team who faltered at the last eight in this year's CONCACAF tournament against Canada.

Predicted Mexico starting XI: Ochoa; Sanchez, Monutes, Araujo, Gallardo; Romo, Alvarez; Alvardo, Cordova, Vega; Funes Mori.

Goal brings you everything you need to know about the Super Eagles' World Cup qualifier against the Blue Sharks

Nigeria continue their race for a place in the 2022 Fifa World Cup against Cape Verde.

The Super Eagles began their qualification campaign with a 2-0 triumph over Peter Butler’s Liberia in Lagos on Friday.

A first-half double from Kelechi Iheanacho propelled the three-time African champions past the Lone Star at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

Coach Gernot Rohr had made it clear that his team will do all it takes to avoid a tortuous route to Qatar 2022. Having this in mind, they would be aiming to pick up all three points against the Blue Sharks.

Bubista’s Cape Verde recorded a 1-1 away draw against the Central African Republic. Despite taking a first-half lead through Julio Tavares, they let the hosts level matters through Tresor Toropite in the 53rd minute.

Argentina given scare ahead of Brazil grudge match as four players receive deportation order

Emi Martinez, Emi Buendia, Gio Lo Celso and Cristian Romero are accused of giving false information to health authorities after flying in from Caracas

Four Argentina players have been ordered to go into quarantine and then leave Brazil just hours before the two nations clash in Sunday's World Cup qualifier.

Emiliano Martinez, Emiliano Buendia, Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso travelled with their nation for the September international round despite the Premier League's restrictions on travel.

Now they face missing out on the upcoming repeat of July's Copa America final triumph due to irregularities.

What was said?

"Following the report that four Argentine players entered Brazil in defiance of the country's sanitary regulations, allegedly giving false information to the Brazilian health authority, Anvisa met with representatives of the Health Ministry and Disease Control Coordination of Sao Paulo's State Health Department," a statement explained on Sunday.

"After meeting with health authorities it was confirmed, following revision of the passports of the four players involved, that the athletes broke the rules for the entry of travellers on Brazilian soil, which decrees that foreign travellers who have been in the United Kingdom, South Africa, Northern Ireland and India in the last 14 days are banned from entering Brazil.

"The players in question declared they had not been in any of those four restricted countries in the last 14 days. They arrived in Brazil on a flight from Caracas which landed in Guarulhos (Sao Paulo). Then, unofficial reports came to Anvisa over alleged false declarations from the travellers.

"Anvisa considers the situation a severe health risk, and has therefore instructed local health authorities to impose immediate quarantine measures on the players, who are banned from engaging in any activity and will be unable to remain in Brazilian territory."

The bigger picture

Argentina's quartet were among the few Premier League players able to arrive in South America, with Brazil losing no fewer than nine players as a result of the Premier League's decision not to release travellers bound for countries on the UK's red list.

Martinez and Lo Celso both started in Thursday's 3-1 victory over Venezuela in Caracas, with Buendia on the bench and Romero hoping to return on Sunday after serving a one-match suspension.

Reports of the quartet's infraction emerged following their arrival in Brazil, although CONMEBOL maintained on Saturday that their presence was permissable as they formed part of the national team's bubble.

"Our tournaments are played inside a sanitary bubble which excuses delegation from going into quarantine for 72 hours," CONMEBOL general secretary Gonzalo Belloso told Clarin.

"The World Cup qualifiers are played with the same model. We have told the Brazilian authorities and the CBF [Brazilian Football Confederation] who are the hosts and must guarantee the game is played."

Following Anvisa's statement, police were seen outside the Argentina team hotel in Sao Paulo as negotiations continued at a furious pace just two hours before the game was scheduled to kick off at Arena Corinthians.

Oscar Tabarez will have been frustrated to have been held to a draw on Thursday and will demand a response this weekend - though he may well resist wholesale changes.

In the absence of big faces such as Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, Joaquin Piquerez and David Terans both picked up debuts last time out - with Agustín Alvarez and Federico Martinez among those in the frame for first caps this weekend too.

Predicted Uruguay starting XI:  Muslera; Nandez, Gimenez, Godin, Vina; Valverde, Vecino, Bentancur; De Arrascaeta, Gomez, B. Rodriguez.

Forwards Martins, Arce, Alvarez, Ramallo, Algaranaz, Chura, Flores*

With a near-three decade drought from the World Cup, La Verde still remain firmly in with a shout of a shock surprise - but they will need to take a major scalp, such as their hosts, sooner rather than later.

Cesar Farías - who previously took Venezuela to a fourth-place finish at the 2011 Copa America - will hope that his underdogs can prove to be a banana skin in Montevideo.

Predicted Bolivia starting XI:  Lampe; Bejarano, Haquin, Jusino, Fernandez; Saavedra, Justiniano, Villarroel, R. Vaca; Alvarez, Chura.

Chippa United coach Heric after Nedbank Cup final defeat to TTM: 'We couldn’t move, we were like enchanted'

The South Africa coach admits his charges face a tough opponent in the Black Stars, but is confident of victory if they take their chances

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has conceded they face a "much stronger" team in Ghana when they square off in Group G of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Monday.

Broos will be taking charge of his second game as Bafana Bafana coach and has already conceded that the Black Stars are the strongest team in the group, but that will not prevent them from going for a win.

What Broos said

"I have seen several videos of Ghana and it will be a tough game, but we have possibilities on our side to get them and if we can get them, we will put them in problems. We do not have to be afraid and, certainly, we are confident in starting tomorrow's game," Broos said in a pre-match presser.

"It will be tough, but we will see how it will end."

"Every game is different, you can not look at the past because if you do that, you are lost from the beginning. Past games are finished, tomorrow will be a new game and even if Ghana is a strong team, we will have our chances. It will be up to us to take the chances that we will get.

"We will try to win and after the game, I will see whether I am satisfied or not. The opponent is much stronger than we are and I will be satisfied with the performance of the team, but I will not be satisfied with a team that does not fight.

"The mentality for us was good, so I hope to see the same thing tomorrow."

The former Cameroon tactician, meanwhile, revealed why he is satisfied with his charges despite a 0-0 draw against Zimbabwe in their opening game.

"I hope my team can have the same performance [as against Zimbabwe], or a little better, maybe, because the opponent is stronger. Good organisation in defence and good attacks is what we will need and we will see what the game will bring us," he added.

"If you do something in training and during the game, you do not see it, then it becomes disappointing. I saw the boys tried to do what we had trained on against Zimbabwe, but we will need some time to improve and become better and better. I am confident if we work like this, we will get where we want to be."

Future Team

Broos further said he is building a team but will not hesitate to make changes in the future if some players do not satisfy him performance-wise.

"We are building a team, a young team, and for me, it is important to see how good the young players are. They can be good in the league, but tomorrow's game is a level higher, it is tougher and what I will want to see is whether the players are ready or not," he continued.

"In the future, I will make changes for sure because some players might not be of the quality that I want for Bafana Bafana. We need sometimes, but that does not mean we will not go for a win.

"We are focused on building the team on one side, but we will chase the results and that is why I wanted to win on Friday, the players wanted to win, but we did not."

Ghana will be looking for a second straight victory after the opening win against Ethiopia in Cape Coast on Friday.

Man City suffer worst home record in 43 years to delay Premier League title party

The Manchester United attacker paid tribute to his new team mate after netting at Wembley in the Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifier

Jesse Lingard paid tribute to new Manchester United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo after scoring England's opening goal against Andorra.

Following his strike, the winger performed Ronaldo's trademark celebration to mark the event - although with his own "JLingz" hand signals included.

Lingard had opened the scoring for the Three Lions against the minnows with a shot converted from the penalty spot after good work initially from Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka.

Ronaldo's Man Utd return

Ronaldo moved back to Man Utd shortly before the transfer window, with the Red Devils completing a dramatic swoop for the five-time Ballon d'Or winner to deny Manchester City his signature.

Lingard was one of several players to celebrate the event, posting on his Instagram timeline with a simple: "Welcome home."

Ronaldo was a player idolised by Lingard during his first stint at the club, at which point Lingard was only a member of the youth teams.

The Portuguese scored 84 times in 196 Premier League outings for the Red Devils during that stint, in which he claimed the first Ballon d'Or of his career and helped the Old Trafford club to the Champions League.

He subsequently left for Real Madrid, where he became an icon by winning the Champions League and Ballon d'Or on four more occasions, also becoming the club's record scorer.

Although his time at Juventus was generally regarded as more testing, in his three years in Italy he won two Scudetti and also became the quickest player in club history to score 100 goals.

Ronaldo, though, is now back at Old Trafford, where he has signed a two-year deal with the option of one more.

The experienced midfielder believes coach Milutin Sredojevic will come up with tactics to help the team win against their visitors

Uganda midfielder Khalid Aucho is optimistic the team will bounce back from the 0-0 draw against Kenya to get a victory at home against Group E leaders Mali.

The East Africa nation will be hosting the West Africans in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers on Monday. This is after the Eagles collected maximum points in Wednesday's home encounter against Rwanda, and will definitely be aiming at making it two wins in a row.

'Coach will give us more tactics against Mali'

"The game we played against Kenya was not bad because we were away, so we made sure that if we do not win at least we should get a draw so that we can fight for three points at home against Mali on Monday," Aucho told reporters as quoted by Sports Nation.

"Now we are back, the coach [Sredojevic] will give us more tactics that we shall use against Mali. All the players are okay, no one was seriously injured, but there were some minor injuries but I think by Monday everyone will be fine.

Monday's match will be played at the St Mary's Stadium in Kitende.

What to work on ahead of Monday game

Meanwhile, coach Sredojevic, who is commonly referred to as Micho, pointed out on where he will be focusing on after the draw away to Kenya.

"I was not impressed with the way we were holding the ball and our numbers when facing the ball. It is something that we need to go and work on," Micho told Goal.

"There are positives we need to pick up and upgrade, and there are negatives that we need to correct because we are playing against probable favourites [Mali]. I also regret the fact that a few of our players could not report due to various reasons.

"But I want to give total credit to the players who were there, they were committed, they worked very hard against a very competitive team."

Uganda are third in their group with one point after Kenya and Rwanda played out a 1-1 draw on Sunday at Nyamirambo Stadium.
