'Pepe has a big future at Arsenal' - Arteta still believes in £72m winger, says Campbell

A former Gunners striker is confident that the Ivory Coast international "will come back better" after being sent off against Leeds United

Nicolas Pepe has a "big future" at Arsenal, according to Kevin Campbell, who says Mikel Arteta still believes in the £72 million ($96m) winger.

Pepe has flattered to deceive since arriving at Emirates Stadium from Lille for a club-record fee in the summer of 2019.

The 25-year-old established himself as one of the most exciting young players in Europe at Stade Pierre-Mauroy but has so far been unable to build on that reputation in the Premier League.

Pepe has only scored once in eight Premier League appearances for the Gunners in 2020-21 and invited the wrath of supporters when he was sent off in his last league outing against Leeds United on November 22.

The referee had no choice but to show the Ivorian a red card after seeing him headbutt Ezgjan Alioski at Elland Road, with Arsenal barely holding out for a 0-0 draw after being forced to play most of the second half with just 10 men.

Pepe redeemed himself somewhat by scoring in a 3-0 Europa League win over Molde last week, which sent Arteta's side through to the round of 32, but he was unable to feature in a 2-1 home defeat against Wolves on Sunday after beginning a three-match Premier League suspension.

Arteta jumped to the defence of the former Lille star before the trip to Molde, telling reporters: "I will give Nico my full support all the time. He knows the things he has to improve, but as well we all know his qualities."

Campbell, who played for the Gunners between 1988 and 1995, acknowledges the fact that Pepe has made mistakes at the start of his career in north London, but still expects him to go on and achieve his full potential under a manager willing to nurture his talents.

Asked if Arsenal made a mistake in bringing Pepe to the club, the former striker told Football Insider: “I do not think they made an error in his signing, not at all.

“Mikel Arteta wants to work with him. I think he has a big future at the club because he is a very talented player.

“He has done some things that were not quite right, one of them being the sending off at Leeds.

"He is suffering right now because he cannot help the team in the Premier League but he will come back better.

“With a bit of luck, everything will be fine when he does return.”

‘In football you count what you have’ – Shikanda after AFC Leopards win

Ingwe boss now says their first win of the season should give the team the push to have consistency in upcoming matches

AFC Leopards chairman Dan Shikanda has called for consistency of results if they are to win the FKF Premier League title for the first time in 22 years.

Ingwe last won the league title in 1998 and since then they have struggled to reclaim it back, with their rivals Gor Mahia dominating the scene, where they have now won it four times in a row.

Before the 2020-21 campaign kicked-off, Shikanda promised club fans he was building a team ready to compete and end their league drought. Now speaking to Goal after they defeated Tusker 2-1 in the opener, the club boss believes the work to reclaim the title has just started.

“The team is looking good and it was good to start with a win and now we have to take it a game at a time, you know in football you count what you have,” Shikanda told Goal on Wednesday.

“So it will be too early to start saying we have won the league title [just because of beating Tusker] or say we have been relegated, we count what we have, and if you ask me, we are still in the relegation zone with the three points we picked from the first match, so what we have to do is make sure we win our matches.

“We need to have a consistent run of winning matches, and then we can start talking about the other issues [like if we are winning the title], much later, let the team win their matches first.”

During the match played at Kasarani Stadium, Tusker took a deserved lead through David Majak but goals from captain Robinson Kamura and striker Elvis Rupia, who converted from the penalty spot, were enough to hand Ingwe maximum points.

The towering Majak grabbed the first goal of the new campaign, after he took advantage of a misunderstanding between the AFC Leopards defenders, to stab home from close range beating keeper Jeff Oyemba in Ingwe's goal.

However, the lead was short-lived as Ingwe drew level courtesy of captain Kamura, who drilled home a low foot effort before Rupia made sure they left the pitch with maximum points after sending the Tusker keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot.

AFC Leopards will next take on promoted side Bidco United on Sunday.

Arsenal sign experienced defender Simone Boye Sorensen from Bayern Munich

The Nigerian forward and the Algeria international have been included among the best performing players in the week under review

Fulham forward Ademola Lookman and Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez have been named in the Premier League Team of the Week.

Lookman delivered an eye-catching performance for the Craven Cottage outfit in their 2-1 victory over Leicester City on Monday.

The 23-year-old returned to England in the summer, teaming up with the Cottagers from German Bundesliga side RB Leipzig on a season-long loan.

The forward scored his second goal for Scott Parker’s men in the encounter which helped his side move off the Premier League bottom three.

The Nigerian forward opened the scoring after a fine combination with Cameroon international Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa.

Mahrez, meanwhile, bagged his first hat-trick for Manchester City since joining the club in the summer of 2018 from Leicester City.

The Algeria international’s efforts helped the Citizens demolish Burnley 5-0 at Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

The winger also joined the likes of Didier Drogba, Emmanuel Adebayor, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane who have been involved in more than 100 goals in the Premier League.

Following their fine displays for their respective clubs, the presenter of the Premier League Team of the Week Alan Shearer has included the African stars among the best performing players.

Lookman has now scored two goals and provided one assist in eight appearances since teaming up with Fulham.

Mahrez has four goals and one assist in 13 appearances to his credit across all competitions for Manchester City this season.

The forward will be expected to continue their impressive performances for their respective clubs in their next league outings.

Atalanta-Villarreal UCL tie postponed due to snow

The Zimbabwean tactician also discussed the departure of one of his key defenders, Daniels

SuperSport United head coach Kaitano Tembo has opened up on his biggest concerns ahead of his side's encounter against Kaizer Chiefs

The Tshwane giants will not be in action for two weeks after their PSL clash with Bloemfontein Celtic was postponed due to the latter's Caf Confederation Cup commitments.

The match was scheduled to be played on December 9 and this means SuperSport's next game is against Chiefs on December 15.

Tembo is keen to ensure that his charges don't get bored during the break with Matsatsantsa having played their last game on November 27 which was a 2-1 win over Maritzburg United

“It is hard to get friendlies as everyone is playing, but it is nobody’s fault that we are not playing," Tembo told Sowetan

"We will keep on training and make sure that the boys are not bored by the lack of game time."

On Tuesday, SuperSport surprisingly announced the departure of one of their key defenders, Clayton Daniels.

Tembo revealed that the former Bafana Bafana international will not be replaced as he will keep his faith in the youngsters, who have been playing this season.

“It is sad to lose him as he has been a pillar of strength. He won trophies with the team, and all we can do is to wish him all the best in his next chapter,” he said.

“He played that role of a senior player when he was around the likes of Sipho Mbule, Teboho Mokoena, Luke Fleurs and Keanan Philips.

"He held these players by the hand, and I think it is an opportunity for them to show what they have learned [from him] and pass the baton [to the current crop of youngsters]."

Daniels, 36, was reluctant to comment on the reason why he parted ways with the Tshwane giants where he spent six years.

“I do not think that it is the right time for me to comment on this," Daniels told the same publication.

"I am still digesting the news and do not want to talk about it. Maybe I will be in a position to talk about it someday."

It has been reported that Daniels and SuperSport decided to terminate the contract as they could not agree on a new deal.

McKinstry: Uganda will be hurt by Bayo's absence at Chan

The goalkeeper will be donning Perak's kit for the 2021 season after late-season heroics in the 2020 season made him a top target for teams.

The former Arsenal keeper Martinez was a huge success for the Gunners towards the backend of the 2019/20 English football season when he step in for the injured Bernd Leno and eventually putting in stellar performances to help Mikel Arteta's side in lifting the FA Cup.

Starved for game time prior to that, the opportunity to play week in week out made Martinez hungry for more and with his stock at an all-time high, decided to leave Arsenal for Aston Villa. A scenario that isn't unlike what young Azri Ghani is experiencing by making the move from Kedah to Perak for the 2021 M-League season.

The 21-year-old Azri had been warming the bench for large parts of the season behind Ifwat Akmal and Shahril Saari but found himself given an opportunity in the game against Sabah with just three matches remaining of the Super League season. He kept a clean sheet in that game and the rest was history.

Aidil Sharin continued to keep his faith in Azri for the remainder of the season after the Malaysian Under-23 international showed that he wasn't ring-rusty at all, more than proving that he is worthy of a prolonged run in the first team. His excellent display made other teams sit up and take notice, with offers coming in thick and fast for his services in 2021.

Kedah tried to keep Azri on the books for another season but without the promise of game time, the Kelantan-born custodian opted to move to another northern club in Perak, citing a bigger opportunity to be selected and feature for the first team.

"Why I chose Perak is because I see them as a strong team in the league that can compete with the likes of Kedah, Johor Darul Ta'zim and Selangor. Kedah are a great team but I have to admit that the competition to start was difficult and I only got my chance towards the end of the season.

"Which is why I feel this is the right time for me to join Perak and hopefully I will get a chance to improve and show my potential in helping the team to do well in the Sper League," said Azri in an interview with Malaysian Football League.

It's not as if Azri will be going over to Perak and become first-choice without a fight. Hafizul Hakim is the current incumbent at the Bos Gaurus and has managed to make his own comeback from a long layoff towards the end of last season.

Prior to Hafizul's return, Mehmet Durakovic was relying on the duo of Khairul Amri Salehuddin and Nasrullah Aziz with neither showing enough to warrant Perak not looking for alternative options. One of the two is expected to be dropped to accommodate Azri but more than most, the new arrival might make his big battle with Hafizul for Perak's starting keeper berth one to watch in the coming season.

Prediction: Los Angeles FC vs Seattle Sounders

The stadium will be inaugurated exactly two years before the final of the 2022 World Cup...

Qatar are all set to inaugurate the fourth venue to be completed for the 2022 World Cup - the Al Rayyan stadium - on December 18.

The stadium – which will become the new home of  Qatar Stars League (QSL) outfit Al Rayyan Sports Club – joins Khalifa International, Al Janoub and Education City stadiums as venues completed for the global showpiece event in 2022.

December 18 is a special date for Qatar. It is the Qatar National Day and the 2022 World Cup final will be held on December 18.

The Al Rayyan stadium is set to host seven matches up to the Round of 16 stage during the World Cup. The 40,000-capacity stadium is within walking distance of Al Riffa Metro Station – on Doha Metro’s Green Line.

The stadium’s façade is glowing and is comprised of patterns that symbolise different aspects of Qatar - the importance of family, the beauty of the desert, native flora and fauna, and local and international trade. A fifth shape – a shield – brings together all the others, representing the strength and unity that is relevant to the city of Al Rayyan.

The occasion will mark a milestone for the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC), the organisation responsible for the infrastructure for the World Cup, as they have now completed four of the eight venues for the tournament with two years still left for the event.

H.E. Hassan Al Thawadi, Secretary General of the SC, said: “The inauguration of this stadium is another major milestone on the road to 2022. This stunning venue and the surrounding precinct will leave a fantastic legacy for Al Rayyan Sports Club and everyone who lives in this proud city.”

“This event also marks the two-year countdown to the biggest match in Qatar’s history: the FIFA World Cup final,” added Al Thawadi. “We are proud that our World Cup preparations remain on track, with 90 per cent of infrastructure projects completed. We look forward to unveiling more stadiums next year as we ensure that all tournament venues are delivered well in advance of the big kick-off.”

Engineer Hilal Al Kuwari, Chairman of the SC’s Technical Delivery Office, felt the occasion was a massive achievement on the road to the first World Cup in the Middle East and Arab world. “Five stadiums have now been completed, including Khalifa, Al Janoub, Education City, Al Bayt and Al Rayyan. The remaining three will be delivered in the near future in order to give us plenty of time to test our operational plans,” said Al Kuwari.

He added: “The successful delivery of the stadium in Al Rayyan – on time and within budget – is testament to the outstanding collaboration of the SC team, our numerous contractors and valued stakeholders. We are incredibly excited to launch this venue on Qatar National Day, exactly two years to the day before everyone focuses on our country for the World Cup final.”

The stadium was awarded several glowing Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) ratings, thanks to the considerable sustainability and efficiency measures that have been embedded in the design to reduce the stadium's carbon footprint. They include the use of recycled building materials and retaining trees from the surrounding environment. Many of the recycled materials used in the new stadium complex came from the deconstructed Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium that once occupied the site.

“The building of this stadium, which incorporated the careful deconstruction of Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium and the reuse of materials from that structure in the new project, is an outstanding achievement for the SC,” said Engineer Yasir Al Jamal, Vice Chairman of the SC’s Technical Delivery Office.

“From the beginning, sustainability was at the forefront of this project, amid the unique challenges we faced during the development. I’m very proud of the SC team and our valued stakeholders for delivering this outstanding venue.”

After Qatar 2022, the modular upper tier of the stadium will be removed, with the seats being repurposed into sporting facilities in Qatar and overseas.

Liverpool 2-1 West Ham: Player Ratings as Reds Leave it Late at Anfield

The Scotland international says squad harmony has been central to the Reds' success over recent seasons

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has dismissed rumours of a rift between team-mates Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

There has been speculation in recent months suggesting the Reds duo do not get along, rumours given further credence in October last year when Mane reacted furiously to Salah’s decision to shoot instead of pass to him during a Premier League win at Burnley.

Robertson, though, has rubbished those suggestions, insisting such a reaction is natural for players who are paid to be selfish in front of goal.

The Scotland international says all of Liverpool’s front players, including Roberto Firmino and new signing Diogo Jota, have a close relationship that has helped drive their recent success.

"The relationship [between the front players] off the pitch is really strong, and on the pitch, the link-up play and everything is always good,” Robertson told the Liverpool Echo.

"But these players are also paid to be selfish and we need them to score goals and take risks in the final third, and we add [Diogo] Jota into that category now. When they are in front of goal, we expect them to shoot and score.

"There have been certain occasions where people say Bobby could have passed, Sadio could have passed, or Mo could have passed, but these guys are paid money to make split-second decisions and score goals for us.

"The three, plus Diogo, are incredible players and they have all showed that since they have come to the club at the highest level.

"The best thing for Liverpool fans is that they are still improving and they are getting better year on year. There is still more to come from them.

"They are fantastic to play with and when I look up, I’m never short of options. It is a pleasure to play with all of them.

"Their relationship is really strong just like every other relationship in the squad and that is why over the last couple of years we have been quite successful.

"You get nowhere without these relationships.”

Robertson says such relationships are replicated across the Liverpool dressing room and is one of the reasons why they have been so successful in recent seasons, winning the Premier League, Champions League and World Club Championship in the space of two years.

"We are really close as a group and we have a really close-knit group of players," he added. "Me, Trent [Alexander-Arnold], Ox [Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain], Hendo [Jordan Henderson] and Milly [James Milner] are in a pack and we lost [Adam] Lallana in the summer who was a big loss to the whole squad, but especially us.

"The Dutch duo I get on really well with - Gini [Wijnaldum] and Virg [van Dijk] - and then Mo, Sadio and the Brazilians [Firmino, Fabinho and Alisson].

"The squad is so tight and that is why I love going into work every single day."

Jesse Marsch admits it's an 'honour' to be linked with Celtic job

The Jangwani giants are ready to help the injured player undergo treatment after staying out of action for six months

Young Africans (Yanga SC) have confirmed their winger Mapinduzi Balama will have to travel to South Africa for further treatment.

Balama was injured in June 2020 after the Mainland Premier League had resumed following the break which was occasioned by the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic, and since then he has been sidelined.

When the new season kicked-off, Yanga had hoped the player will return to action but it is not the case as he has failed to recover from the injury.

Yanga official Antonio Nugaz has revealed that the player will have to undergo further treatment in South Africa and will leave Tanzania anytime this week.

“Balama needs further treatment and as a club, we have decided to have him see a specialist in South Africa,” Nugaz told reporters in Dar es Salaam. “We don’t want to take a risk with him, he has been out for six months, and the only way to assist him is to make sure he sees a specialist.

“He will leave anytime this week, most probably on Thursday.”

Mapinduzi will become the second player from the Tanzania league to head to South Africa for further treatment after Azam FC striker Prince Dube also travelled.

The Zimbabwean star injured his ulnar of the left hand during their league defeat to Yanga after just a quarter an hour of the derby played at Chamazi Stadium seven days ago, and the club decided he undergoes further treatment in Cape Town.

The 23-year-old, who has been in fine form this season, had managed to score six goals and is among the top scorers in the top-flight.

“Our striker Prince [Dube] has today [Sunday] left Tanzania for South Africa to undergo further scans and treatment on his left hand in South Africa,” the club confirmed on their social media pages, with a picture of the player at the airport ready to travel.

“Dube will be treated at Vincent Pallotti hospital situated in Cape Town and we wish him all the best as he undergoes treatment and further wish him a speedy recovery.”

While Balama has been out for six months, the absence of Dube will surely affect the Chamazi-based giants who have already started to lose ground as far as winning the title is concerned after losing two straight matches against KMC and Yanga before securing a 1-1 draw against Biashara United.

Manchester derby sets new TV audience record for WSL

The German head coach talked up the quality of his former player ahead of the French champions' trip to Old Trafford

Thomas Tuchel insists Edinson Cavani has nothing to prove against Paris Saint-Germain, and that he's well aware of the threat the "reliable" Manchester United striker will pose his team.

PSG travel to Old Trafford to face Group H leaders United in Manchester on Wednesday, with all eyes on star centre-forward Cavani.

Cavani joined United on a free transfer on deadline day in October, having left PSG as the Ligue 1 champions' all-time leading scorer with 200 goals to his name in June.

The 33-year-old Uruguay international won six league titles during his time at PSG, where he arrived from Serie A outfit Napoli in 2013.

Cavani has scored three Premier League goals for United despite only featuring as a substitute, including a stunning brace against Southampton on Sunday, but his decisive display has been overshadowed by a social media post containing a Spanish phrase many would consider to be racially insensitive.

Tuchel was asked about the controversy which is being investigated by the Football Association (FA), and he took the opportunity to hail Cavani on the eve of the showdown.

"I'm surprised [by the social media comment], because I know Edi as a calm person, determined on the pitch to help the team, which is a rare characteristic for a striker of his quality," Tuchel told reporters.

"Always ready to do everything for the team. A big physical impact, scoring comes naturally to him and he's reliable 24/7 – you can call him in the night and he will be there – to score, to defend, to score, to defend.

"I'm happy for him personally that he could show this to all Manchester United fans in the last game against Southampton – he was absolutely decisive for them.

"He does not need to show us tomorrow, we already know, so he can do a little pause, it's not necessary to show us. If he will play, we will need to find answers for that."

Cavani became the first United player since manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 1999 to have at least three goal involvements as a substitute in a single Premier League game as the Red Devils overcame Southampton 3-2 at the weekend.

United, who only require a point to reach the last 16, are three points clear of last season's Champions League runners-up PSG and RB Leipzig atop the Group H table.

Since the start of the 2016-17 season, PSG have only failed to score in one of their 39 games in the Champions League, while they have netted an average of 2.4 goals per game in this run (95 in total) – with the only side to keep a clean sheet against them in this run being Bayern Munich in last season's final.

Man City 1-1 Sevilla (5-4 on penalties): Player ratings as Champions League winners snatch Super Cup

The Genk striker is averaging close to a goal every game, but has struggled to command respect or minutes at national team level

Going back to the late-80s, when the late great Stephen Keshi first made his way to Lokeren, the Belgian top flight has always proven a fruitful destination for Nigerian players.

From the aforementioned ‘Big Boss’ to Daniel Amokachi to Joseph Akpala to, more recently, the likes of Moses Simon and Henry Onyekuru, the Jupiler League has fulfilled an important function as a sort of ‘stepping stone’ before the big five leagues come calling.

As such, perhaps it should come as no surprise that Nigeria’s highest goalscorer in Europe so far this season is a regular of Flemish hunting grounds. With 12 goals in 13 matches, Paul Onuachu is currently running at close to a goal every game, and unsurprisingly leads the scoring charts in Belgium.

The towering striker was once more in devastating form at the weekend, scoring twice in the 5-1 demolition of Cercle Brugge, and drew praise from various pundits, not least of which was former Belgium international striker Gert Verheyen. His movement inside the box and powers of anticipation, in particular, have been the subject of special appreciation.

This has contrasted quite starkly with the perception of Onuachu with the Nigeria national team. Indeed, the 26-year-old is only two weeks removed from an international window where he accrued less than 30 minutes over two games against Sierra Leone, and this despite the absence of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen from the return leg in Freetown.

In fact, the former Midtjylland only made the list of invitees at all due to an injury to winger Simon, who was forced to withdraw at the last minute.

So, what gives? Why exactly is it so difficult for Onuachu to transfer his club form to the Super Eagles?

There are a few factors worth considering.

First, and most obvious, is the simple fact that international football provides a completely different set of challenges to club football.

The sheer level of expectation is different, and time on the training pitch is at a premium. These peculiar circumstances require a certain kind of mental and emotional fortitude; and that is without taking into account the importance of group dynamics, and how one player can – even unconsciously – affect the collective adversely.

There is little to suggest Onuachu is a prima donna, of course. However, it is important to acknowledge that soft factors can, in fact, be crucial to a coach’s decision-making.

In terms of the team’s on-pitch mechanics, things do not look altogether encouraging for Onuachu either.

A crucial consideration where selection is concerned is how the player in question fits into the whole. Under Gernot Rohr, Nigeria have always – with some exceptions – played with a lone striker leading the line, and that player, whether Osimhen or, before him, Odion Ighalo, is expected to put in a tremendous shift.

From running the channels to chasing down defenders to providing wall-passes and combining with the midfield; it can be a thankless task, and it requires a certain intensity.

Not a brief, then, for the languid stylings of Onuachu, whose 2.01m frame does not under-deliver on its targetman promise. The Genk man is certainly at his best with a certain kind of service which, until the recent addition of Zaidu Sanusi into the selection pool, simply did not exist within the Super Eagles.

The Porto man is an avid crosser, eager almost to the point of self-parody, and there was evidence during the October friendly against Algeria in Klagenfurt, albeit sporadic, that a link-up with Onuachu could bear proper dividend.

That, however, raises another question: is it even prudent at all for Rohr to rip up his side’s default playing style in order to extract the maximum from a player who, when all is said and done, is not the Super Eagles’ first-choice striker?

Perhaps Onuachu is a tad unfortunate, in that big strikers are often pigeonholed as the mythical ‘Plan B’, the axe behind the pane of glass that should only be broken in emergency situations.

Still though, Osimhen’s position as the national team’s starting centre-forward is richly deserved and justified, and it is to his parameters that the Super Eagles attack is currently calibrated.

As has been referenced before, international football does not afford a lot of time on the training pitch; even clubs, who have the players available and working every day, are hardly able to prepare two separate, coherent tactical alternatives.

To expect the national team to do that is rather unrealistic. Instead, the onus is on the player – in this case, Onuachu – to adapt to the extant system and find the means to be useful within it.

Therein lies perhaps the easiest path to relevance and appreciation within the setting of the Super Eagles. The alternative: keep scoring until you can no longer be looked over.

It may seem like a long shot, especially considering his competition is a once-in-a-lifetime striking talent on whom Nigeria have bet the house, but on the evidence of his performances so far this season, Onuachu seems determined to try anyway.

Oduor: Harambee Stars defender unused as Barnsley end poor run against Birmingham

The Kenyan and his side had lost their last two matches before picking a morale-boosting victory against the Blues

Kenya’s Clarke Oduor was an unused substitute when Barnsley picked up a 2-1 Championship win over Birmingham City on Tuesday.

Cauley Woodrow, who would have ensured Oduor’s side emerged with a bigger scoreline as he wasted a number of chances, scored the equaliser through a penalty. Callum Styles grabbed the winning goal to punish Birmingham at home who scored a goal via Scott Hogan.

Hogan’s 56th-minute goal would have given Birmingham a first win in six games that would have ended a run of 326 minutes without a goal in open play.

Woodrow, who will be celebrating his 26th birthday on Wednesday, equalised for Barnsley in the 71st minute after he had missed two clear chances in the first half.

In the 84th minute, Styles scored the second for Barnsley who had lost the previous two Championship engagements.

Oduor’s coach Valerien Ismael explained the reasons that made him happy apart from the win away from home.

“I am very happy with the start - it gives you a good feeling and improves our standing in the Championship,” Ismael said according to Sky Sports .

“This win will give us more confidence. We told the players before the game they had two tasks: To sustain their performance - and I was delighted with that - and show more mentality and the desire to get the points.

“It was very important to have a game-changer after going one goal down.”

On his part, Birmingham's Aitor Karanka claimed their opponents were more aggressive and thus deserved the win.

“They were more aggressive than us and again it is something we have to analyse,” Karanka said.

“They had more energy than us and it is something we have to correct. Sometimes if you argue with a teammate it is nothing personal and something we have to learn.

“They are very good (well behaved) but we have to demand much more from each other. They are too nice.

“It was a frustrating performance, a frustrating game. We couldn't pass the ball three or four times in a row in the first half and it was difficult.

“We started the second half much better and the only time we put two or three passes together we scored. I don't understand why we are not doing it more often.”

Barnsley will face Bournemouth on December 4.

'Chelsea are genuine Premier League & Champions League contenders' - Blues have no weaknesses, says Cole

A former Stamford Bridge favourite believes Frank Lampard's side can go all the way in both domestic and continental competitions

Chelsea are genuine Premier League and Champions League contenders, according to Joe Cole, who says the Blues have no weaknesses.

Frank Lampard sought to build on an encouraging fourth-place Premier League finish in 2019-20 by recruiting the likes of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell, Edouard Mendy and Thiago Silva in the summer transfer window.

The Blues backed their manager to the tune of over £200 million ($269m) and are already seeing the fruits of their sizeable investment in the early stages of the new season.

Chelsea have risen to third in the Premier League standings after 10 fixtures, two points behind Tottenham and reigning champions Liverpool having recorded five wins, four draws and only one defeat.

Lampard's men are also safely through to the Champions League knockout stages, but will look to secure top spot in Group E when they take in a trip to Sevilla on Wednesday night.

Ahead of that encounter, Cole has expressed his belief that the west London outfit are capable of winning a domestic and European double, albeit while admitting that they still have plenty of room to develop as a team.

"I think Chelsea are genuine contenders," The former Blues winger, who won three league titles and two FA Cups at Stamford Bridge between 2003 and 2010, told BT Sport.

"I think all the English sides, you can’t discount any of them from going all the way in the Champions League because of the quality and the strength of our league.

"I don’t feel there are any weaknesses in the Chelsea side at the moment. I feel there aren’t any glaring weaknesses, there are areas to improve on.

"But if you look at the last two months, certainly since Chilwell, Mendy, and Silva have got into the back four, the clean sheets have started to happen.

"We look safe and secure from set-pieces. So those things have improved dramatically from last season. I think there’s still areas where Chelsea can improve and they will improve.

"But certainly, I put them down as contenders to win the Champions League and the Premier League this year."

LIVE Transfer Talk: Man United closer to deal with Juve for Rabiot

The British coach is working with a lot of limitations and needs time to produce results…

Two matches, five goals conceded and zero goals scored. This isn’t the way East Bengal would have hoped to begin their journey in the Indian Super League (ISL).

After a disappointing loss against arch-rivals ATK Mohun Bagan, Robbie Fowler’s men would have eyed the Mumbai City match as a platform to kickstart their campaign but the Islanders were just too hot to handle for an underprepared East Bengal side.

East Bengal were impressive in patches in the Kolkata derby despite the defeat but in their second match, an attacking side like Mumbai City exposed the team’s skeletons completely.

The Red and Golds were the last team to enter the ISL this season and did not have much option while selecting the Indian contingent. Fowler then scrutinised the squad and selected the best and most importantly, the fittest options for the final squad.

But there is no doubt that the East Bengal's Indian contingent has a lightweight feel about them and it has hurt the team in the two matches so far.

Fowler may receive some flak from certain corners for throwing his players under the bus when he said after the match, “Few of them (Indians) have probably never been coached before and that is what we are doing. We will try and make our Indian players better and that takes good coaching and I don't think they had had that in the years gone by."

Although it could be a statement in the 'heat of the moment', the East Bengal fans must accept that their Indian contingent is far from the best and their preparations also has not been ideal.

The Liverpool great could have minced his words after a depressing defeat but that does not change the reality. With the lack of quality in the team and less pre-season training, it is unfair to blame the coach right away.

East Bengal looked vulnerable in all departments and the injury to skipper Danny Fox within four minutes of the match added to their misery. Anthony Pilkington and Jacques Maghoma worked hard up front but they did not receive any support. They clearly lack a quality number 9 and that is one area which should have been filled with a proper foreign signing before the season started.

The Kolkata giants will take time to settle, probably more time than any other club in the ISL. They have a completely new set of foreign players who are yet to adjust to the new conditions. Fowler will have to go back to the drawing board and chalk out a new plan to churn out results. East Bengal are still a work in progress and Fowler's process must be given time.

ESPN FC's Fantasy Premier League: Which expert will reign supreme in 2022-23?

Mumbai City finally announced their arrival with a convincing performance against East Bengal…

It took Mumbai City three matches to play the football their coach Sergio Lobera was hoping for and they have finally done so with a thumping win over East Bengal in an Indian Super League (ISL) clash on Tuesday evening.

A new-look Mumbai did not have the ideal start as they lost to NorthEast United in their opening tie. In the following match, even though, they picked up a win against 10-men FC Goa, Mumbai were unconvincing and it was definitely not the way Lobera would have hoped to get the three points.

But against East Bengal, the Islanders were a changed side. They dominated, kept possession and tore down the opposition in quick and nifty counter-attacks, exactly how we were used to seeing FC Goa play under Sergio Lobera in the last three seasons.

Lobera’s sides are a treat to watch especially because they play eye-catching football. The Spanish coach has one of the most balanced squads in the ISL at his disposal and so it was just a matter of time that the players would start firing.

Mumbai had paid a record transfer fee for French midfielder Hugo Boumous who was the best player of the league last season while being at FC Goa. After a rusty start to his new journey, the Frenchman was back to his old self against East Bengal. Boumous assisted twice in the match and was all over the pitch, tormenting the men in Red and Gold.

Along with Boumous, Lobera has managed to bring another former pupil from FC Goa, Ahmed Jahouh. We are all familiar with Moroccan midfielder and the kind of presence he generally has on the pitch. Jahouh’s towering presence at the centre of the park and his distribution meant the attackers had plenty of service.

The midfielder oozed confidence throughout the game, be it nutmegging opposition strikers in his own penalty box or taking an outrageous free-kick with the outside of his foot which found Boumous inside the East Bengal box which led to the third goal.

Even Rowllin Borges was very good, partnering Borges with a lot of confidence and showed his passing range as well.

The Spanish boss once again kept Bartholomew Ogbeche out of action in the beginning and trusted Adam Le Fondre upfront. The English forward is slowly finding his form with each passing game and if he continues to do so, Lobera will find it difficult to slot in the Nigerian forward in the starting lineup.

But as Lobera very right said after the match that he has an ‘amazing problem’ at hand and that is to choose a lineup among players like Bartholomew Ogbeche, Hugo Boumous and Adam Le Fondre. It is a headache every coach in ISL would love to have.

Enemies of the game, beware! Sportradar has extended its deal with the Indian Super League...

INR 11,52,42,40,00,00,000/-

What is that number? That is an amount that equates to almost 1.3 trillion Euros if that makes more sense. That is also the estimated amount of money involved in sports betting around the globe.

When there is a lot of money at stake, some people try to bend the rules in order to make more money. In sports, they try to force a change in the events and influence what happens in a game. This is not only illegal but completely destroys the industry. But there is a way to find out wrongdoings and that is where an entity likes Sportradar could make a difference.

The ongoing Indian Super League (ISL) recently announced a multi-year extension to its partnership with Sportradar, which, as it states, is the world’s leading provider of sports integrity solutions and sports data products. They have not only been working with the ISL since 2016 but also offer similar services for Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and FIFA globally and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Pro Kabaddi League in India.

What is it that they do?

The integrity services wing of Sportradar is not just about the detection of match-fixing. "We work in a lot of areas," Tan You Chen, Senior Manager, Sportradar Integrity Partnerships (Asia), told Goal.

"We monitor suspicious movements, educate for prevention. We educate players and officials on the importance of integrity. We do intelligence investigation when there is suspicious activity. We also work with federation partners to review their strategy and policies. We advise on their rules and regulations and point out loopholes and areas that need to be strengthened."

How do they do it?

They use computer intelligence named Fraud Detection System which helps track movements of bookmakers. They also have a team of more than 100 people known as integrity analysts who try to find out what caused the suspicious activity in the market and find a sporting explanation for the change. They review movements in the market and watch games, making it a 24 x 7 operation that requires teams all over the world to cover different timezones.

Tan said, "Our partnership with ISL includes the monitoring of all the ISL matches. They can also come to us if they have a suspicion and we can help them. It is similar to our partnership with FIFA. For ISL, we need to have people who understand the local market and what is happening on the ground."

Sportradar was recently in the news for red-flagging six matches in the Goa Professional League. In order to understand how the flagging process happens, it is important to understand the two types of betting they monitor - pre-match and live.

For pre-match betting, the detection system looks out for a margin of change. For example. before the game, if the odds for a team's win change from 1-8 to 1-2 within a short time, the system throws an alert.

For live betting, the system uses data from the past to calculate odds at specific points in the game. For example, if the home team is winning a game by two goals in the 80th minute, the odds to win for the away team will be calculated to be high. Then if there is a drop in the figure, there is a trigger and in both types of cases, the analysts will try to find possible explanations for the deviation.

"The system has two levels of alerts - Level 1 and 2 (Severe). We cant immediately conclude it is fixed. Our team of analysts try to explain it but when they cannot find a possible explanation, we flag it and escalate it. We prepare a report and alert our partners. A report is sent in 72 hours," Tan explained.

Their procedure ends when ISL receives the report. It is then up to the league to either act on it or decide on a plan of action like getting a second opinion. If the case ends up in court, Sportradar will work with law enforcement agencies and submit the required documents in court.

Even when all this happens, the team of analysts will have moved on to checking the next trigger. And it continues.

A number of Matildas are set to be involved as Europe's biggest competition when it resumes this week

The new UEFA Women's Champions League season officially kicks off on December 8 with Australians to be represented in bigger numbers than ever before.

The competition, which can be watched exclusively in Australia on streaming service Sports Flick, has been modified this season as a result of the coronavirus pandemic with two-leg knockout games for the 32 teams that have qualified replacing a group stage.

Lyon, who lifted the title for a seventh time in August, are among the first few teams in action and find themselves up against Italian giants Juventus. Matildas defender Ellie Carpenter has cemented herself as a regular for the French side in recent weeks after being an unused substitute in their Champions League final victory against Wolfsburg in August.

Elsewhere, Sam Kerr will be hoping to star as Chelsea take on Portuguese heavyweights Benfica with the Blues yet to lose across all competitions this season. Kerr has scored three goals across nine appearances so far this campaign and will be eager to show Europe just how sharp she can be in front of goal.

Kyah Simon will also be hoping to find the back of net for PSV when they take on Barcelona with the 29-year-old impressing since making her move to the Netherlands in July. She's been joined at the Dutch club by Amy Harrison - another Matilda ready to leave her mark in the Champions League.

After a tough 2019-20 campaign, young Aussie attacker Alex Chidiac looks to be back in contention for Atletico Madrid, who tackle Swiss side Servette Chenois in their Round of 32 clash.

Teenagers Indiah-Paige Riley (Fortuna Hjorring) and Karly Roestbakken (LSK Kvinner) could also feature for their clubs in what will likely be tough games against higher-profile opponents.

You can watch the entire tournament live if you subscribe to Sports Flick - with the streaming service charging $15 a month for their product, which includes over 100 hours of live sport a week.

If you sign up with Sports Flick and use the code 'UEFA', you will receive 50 per cent off the monthly subscription price of $15.

Thomas Tuchel reveals frustration at Barcelona's pursuit of Cesar Azpilicueta

After almost two years in charge of the South American nation, the Portuguese tactician has departed

Carlos Queiroz has left his post as Colombia head coach after almost two years at the helm of La Tricolor.

Queiroz's departure was announced by the Colombian Football Federation (FCF) on Tuesday after the nation's slow start to 2022 World Cup qualifying.

Colombia, who have featured at the past two World Cups, have won just one of their opening four qualifiers, collecting four points to sit seventh.

"The Colombian Football Federation and the technical director Carlos Queiroz agreed the coach would not continue as head of the Colombian Men's National Team," a statement read.

"For the FCF, it was a pride to have [Quieroz] for almost two years, in which he gave us his full capacity, knowledge and experience.

"The contribution that you leave us will serve to continue the development of the projects that are being carried out with all the national teams of our country.

"We wish Professor Carlos Queiroz and his team the best in their future career plans.

"As of this date, the Executive Committee of the Colombian Soccer Federation will initiate the process to search for the coach who will occupy, in the immediate future, the position of technical director of the Colombian Senior Men's National Team."

Despite starting World Cup qualifying with solid results against Venezuela and Chile, the Colombians crashed to a 3-0 defeat at home against Uruguay before being battered 6-1 on the road by Ecuador.

Queiroz was immediately under pressure following the two humilating defeats and the decision was made for him to leave the role on Tuesday.

Colombia will need to appoint a new coach by March, when it faces Brazil and Paraguay, with Jorge Luis Pinto and Juan Carlos Osorio expected to be strong candidates.

Former Real Madrid, Portugal and Iran boss Queiroz took over in Colombia in February 2019. He oversaw 18 games at the helm, winning nine, drawing five and losing four.

Quieroz shot to prominence as Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant at Manchester United across two stints, which included a period coaching Real Madrid in between.

The 67-year-old coached his native Portugal between 2008-10 before embarking on an eight-year role with the Iran national team, which commenced in 2011.

DELE ALLI & HARRY WINKS: My Ultimate Player

After a draw with Atletico Madrid, Javi Martinez praised Bayern Munich's youth.

Javi Martinez believes the future is bright for Bayern Munich after a young side held Atletico Madrid to a 1-1 draw in the Champions League.

Jamal Musiala and Bright Arrey-Mbi, both 17, started at the Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday, with Bayern having already clinched top spot in Group A, while fellow teenagers Angelo Stiller and Joshua Zirkzee came off the bench.

Veteran Thomas Muller converted an 86th-minute penalty for Bayern to cancel out Joao Felix's opener and hold Atletico to a draw.

Martinez said Champions League holders Bayern had plenty to look forward to, hailing their young talent.

"They were born in 2003 – that's almost when I started to play in the first division," he said, via UEFA.com.

"But Bayern is a club that builds from the bottom with the youth players. The future is bright. When young players train with us, they play very well.

"They are the future of the club."

Bayern failed to land a shot on target in the first half of a Champions League group game for the first time since October 2009.

But Muller's 47th Champions League goal – 21 more than any other German in the competition's history – earned them a draw.

"I am very pleased with this result," Bayern head coach Hansi Flick told a news conference.

"I think we did very well in the second half, we tried to turn the game around – and in the end we got a 1-1 draw. I think we did better after Thomas Muller came on and also Serge Gnabry.

"Also, I am happy for the young players, for some of them it was their first match and then in a such a nice stadium against Atletico. It was a good evening for us.

"We also got some insights that we will discuss with the coaching staff, we will analyse this game and take something with it for the future. But overall I am very pleased."

SAVE: Brad Knighton gets big to stop Luis Silva

The Irishman was lauded by his coach after the Reds win over the Dutch side in Europe

Jurgen Klopp praised "top talent" Caoimhin Kelleher after the goalkeeper helped Liverpool overcome Ajax 1-0 in the Champions League.

Starting as Alisson deals with a hamstring injury, Kelleher became just the second goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet on his debut for Liverpool in the Champions League.

Kelleher, 22, made four saves as Curtis Jones' 58th-minute goal proved to be enough to send the Premier League champions into the last 16 from Group D.

Klopp hailed the shot-stopper and said the Irishman's distribution was a key reason he decided to start Kelleher over Adrian.

"Top. Top, top, top," the Liverpool manager told a news conference.

"It is a situation, which I have to say, it was easy to decide for Caoimhin because he just deserves it, but it was difficult to decide against Adrian because he did really well for us: a lot of clean sheets, what a season last year, Super Cup final and all these kind of things.

"He did a really good job, but we needed the package of Caoimhin – and he is a top talent anyway, but a really good shot-stopper and a top footballer, so I like that.

"We needed that for the pressing of Ajax, we needed his chips from him into the half-spaces and these kinds of things. That was really good, but of course in the end it is all about saving, keeping the ball out of the net, and he did that at least twice in an exceptional manner. I am pretty sure he will either sleep really well or not at all, but he will enjoy both."

Kelleher completed 30 of 42 passes for Liverpool, who have further injury concerns over Jordan Henderson and Andy Robertson.

But Klopp was optimistic about the pair ahead of Sunday's clash at home to Wolves.

"We have now two days more than we had last week until the next game," he said.

"I don't know, things like this show up the next day slightly different. In the moment I am rather positive about it but I don't know.

"But that's a problem of the next few days and not tonight."
