Modric: Real Madrid contract talks are going in a good direction

The midfielder is not certain what the future holds for Sergio Ramos, but his own talks over a new deal appear to be going well

Luka Modric says talks with Real Madrid over a new contract are "going in a good direction".

The Croatia star's deal expires at the end of the season but reports have claimed there is an agreement in place for a one-year extension.

The 2018 Ballon d'Or winner, now 35, has enjoyed a superb campaign for Madrid following early doubts over whether the return of Martin Odegaard could limit his involvement.

Of Madrid midfielders this season, nobody has scored more goals than Modric (four, level with Casemiro), while only Lucas Vazquez and Toni Kroos have created more goalscoring chances (30).

Modric has also played the most successful passes ending in the final third (451) of any Madrid midfielder this term, highlighting his attacking impact under Zinedine Zidane while Odegaard has struggled for minutes and Eden Hazard for fitness.

Ahead of the Supercopa de Espana semi-final clash with Athletic Club, Modric suggested he has plenty of football left - and that it could be played in the Spanish capital.

"I can't say much. I'm speaking with the club and everything is going in a good direction," he said of his contract talks.

"I haven't changed anything in particular. I'm working a lot outside of training, I have the same desire to compete, the years are no problem at all."

The future of Sergio Ramos is similarly unclear and Modric was not prepared to offer any indication of the captain's plans.

"I can't position myself at anyone's side," he said. "Sergio is my friend and I want the best for him, for him to be happy.

"It's between him and the club. I can't get involved."

Modric was happy to offer some advice to Odegaard, though, the 22-year-old having played only nine times this season after returning following a fine loan spell with Real Sociedad.

"Last time I spoke to him, I told him I liked him as a player and a person, to keep fighting for his place in this team, that when he plays to make difference to show he deserves to be here," Modric said.

"To work and fight for your place is my advice for him."

Man City star Sterling continues penalty misery with Brighton miss

The England international made it three consecutive unsuccessful spot-kicks by blazing over against the Seagulls

Raheem Sterling continued his poor run of penalties on Wednesday, becoming the first Premier League player in more than three years to miss three in a row.

Phil Foden gave City the lead against Brighton, scoring just before half-time for his team-high eighth goal of the season in all competitions.

City held that lead until stoppage time, when Sterling was given a chance to seal the game from the spot after Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez brought down Kevin De Bruyne in the box.

But Sterling stepped up to the spot and blazed over the bar, his third consecutive penalty miss in the Premier League.

The England international became the first player to miss three consecutive Premier League penalties since Saido Berahino did so between April 2016 and September 2017.

Overall, Manchester City have missed seven penalties in the Premier League since the start of last season, more than any other side.

City still managed to hold on for a 1-0 win, the club's fourth straight victory in the Premier League and eighth straight match without defeat.

Pep Guardiola's side have turned things around after a slow start to the season, and now have as many wins in their last four outings as they had in their previous 11 in the Premier League (W4 D5 L2).

That run has City up to third place in the table, four points behind table-topping Manchester United but also with one fewer game played than their city rivals.

Brighton, meanwhile, slipped further into relegation trouble and now sit in 17th place – just one place above the bottom three.

Speaking after the game, Brighton boss Graham Potter said he was still happy with his side's effort despite the loss.

"We are disappointed to come away with nothing," Potter told the BBC. "We met a top team. I’m so proud of the players. You have to suffer here, that’s how it is. We tried to attack.

"You’re always on the stretch because they have fantastic players. They’re so good, they drive you back. Our intention was to be on the front foot and play and attack when we could.

"The boys defended well when they had to and left everything on the pitch which is all you can ask. You need everything to go your way if you’re going to get anything here.

"Second half was really good, really spirited. We pushed a very good team all the way."

Foden: Manchester City are back to our best

The midfielder says the team has found its stride as they continued an extended unbeaten run on Wednesday

Phil Foden says Manchester City are back to their best after taking down Brighton on Wednesday.

Foden scored the game's only goal just before half-time, guiding his side to a 1-0 win at the Etihad Stadium.

The victory makes it 14 games unbeaten in all competitions for Manchester City, who have kept 11 clean sheets in those 14 matches.

Wednesday's triumph was spurred on by Foden, who became the club's leading goalscorer this season in the process.

Foden tucked a shot inside the near post in the 44th minute, marking his eighth goal in all competitions this campaign.

With Manchester City now surging, Foden believes that the club are back to playing their best after some difficult results to start the season.

"It definitely feels like we're back to our best. We've taken confidence from the last few results," he told BT Sport.

"We could have done better today but overall I'm very proud of the team. It's a great result.

"Brighton defended really well and had a good game plan. To get the goal before half-time was really important. It ended up as the winning goal so I'm delighted.

"I don't score too many with my right foot so I enjoyed it.

"I always like to score goals and be there in the box. We just want to keep going with this form and pushing to win the league."

Pep Guardiola told BBC Sport: "Phil Foden is 20 years old, look at the starts. The amount of games, the assists compared to the bigger stars in football. Can play both sides, in the middle as a false nine. He is so clever in front of goal. That is why he deserves to play."

City currently sit third in the Premier League, trailing only local rivals Manchester United and recent title rivals Liverpool.

United and Liverpool are set to collide this weekend, with the Red Devils currently maintaining a three-point lead over Liverpool and a four-point lead over City, who have a game in hand.

Next up for Foden and co. is a match with Crystal Palace at the Etihad on Sunday before they play host to Aston Villa three days later.

After that, City will march into the FA Cup, where they'll visit Cheltenham on January 23.

Johanna Omolo: Erzurumspor sign Kenya international

The Harambee Stars midfielder has completed a move to Turkish football from Cercle Brugge

Kenya international Johanna Omolo has completed a transfer to Buyuksehir Belediye Erzurumspor from Cercle Brugge, the Turkish side confirmed on Wednesday.

In a post on their official Facebook page, the Super Lig announced the arrival of the 31-year-old, who had previously been playing his football in Belgium.

At Erzurumspor, he will link up with Cameroon internationals Petrus Boumal and Adolphe Teikeu, although they face a tough second half to the season, with the side currently bottom of the Turkish table after 18 matches.

They’re six points off safety, having played one game more than 17th-placed Genclerbirligi.

Earlier on Wednesday, Erzurumspor also announced the signing of Morocco international and ex-West Ham United defender Manuel da Costa.

Omolo signed a new contract with Cercle Brugge in August, seemingly putting to an end speculation about his future.

He had run down his contract with the Flemish club earlier in the summer, and had held off renewing before finally putting pen to paper five months ago.

However, despite agreeing terms until the end of this season, Omolo has moved on earlier than planned.

The midfielder amassed over 60 appearances for the Belgian side over the last three and a half seasons, and was influential as Cercle were promoted to the Jupiler League from the second tier in 2018.

At international level, he scored the lone goal for Kenya as they battled to 1-1 draw against Togo in 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, having made his Harambee Stars debut in 2011.

He has featured for several clubs in Kenya, Belgium, and Luxembourg including Coast Stars, Vise, Fola Esch, Beerschot, and Lommel United.

In 2019, Omolo won the prestigious Fifpro Merit Award for his community work in Dandora through his foundation. The award came with a Ksh2.5 million cash prize.

Started in 2017, the Johanna Omolo Foundation has been supporting children in Dandora, where the Belgium-based player grew up, through education scholarships, mentorship, and entrepreneurship programmes, providing sanitary pads to teenage girls among many other initiatives meant to uplift the livelihoods of the youth of the informal settlement in Nairobi.

Omolo is also a member of Common Goal, a charitable organisation that draws willing professional footballers and coaches to donate one percent of their wages to non-governmental organisations working in football.

Ghana technical director Lippert reacts to poor Wafu Zone B U17 Cup performance

The German shares his thoughts on Ghana's underwhelming outing at the sub-regional tournament in Togo

Ghana technical director Benhard Lippert reveals the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council will take a critical look at the nation's failure at the ongoing Wafu Zone B U17 Cup of Nations in Togo.

The Black Starlets were bundled out of the sub-regional tournament on Tuesday following a 3-1 defeat to Ivory Coast in their final group game.

With an earlier 1-1 draw with Nigeria, Ghana finished third and bottom of a three-team Group B, consequently unable to progress to the next round of the competition.

“I’m not happy with the U17 performance; we have goalscoring problems," Lippert told Atinka Sports.

"We don’t have the kind of strikers who are real strikers but all in all the referee decided this match. Sorry to say this.

“This was really obvious and there is a lot of things to do. This team didn’t present itself as a team but we still have four or five prospects in the team.

“We have to discuss the performance of the team at the Executive Committee level."

Ghana's inability to reach the last four means they lost every chance of finishing among the top two to qualify for the Africa U17 Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Morocco later this year.

"The players are disappointed and I think that is football," Ghana coach Ben Fokuo told the GFA's official website.

"They were behind us hoping we win and make the country proud and that was what we were also hoping to do by qualifying for the Afcon and God-willing for the World Cup but it didn’t happen.

"I know Ghanaians are disappointed and the players and technical team are also not happy for not qualifying to the next stage of the competition.

"But what I will tell Ghanaians is that they should keep on being behind the U17 team and we still have to scout and build a new U17 side for the future.

"They shouldn’t be downhearted; we have a long way to go in future and we have new talents in the country to assemble for the U17 side to do their best in future for the country."

It is the second straight time Ghana will be absent from the U17 Afcon.

Yanga SC down archrivals Simba SC to win Mapinduzi Cup

Timu ya Wananchi emerged champions as they outwitted their Kariakoo opponents from the shoot-out after a stalemate in 90 minutes

Young Africans (Yanga SC) lifted the Mapinduzi Cup after beating archrivals Simba SC 4-3 at Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar on Wednesday.

After a 0-0 draw at full-time, the cup champions had to be settled from the spot. Francis Kahata, Chris Mugalu, and Gadiel Michael scored for Simba as Meddie Kagere was denied by the woodwork while Joash Onyango’s effort was saved by Farouk Shikhalo.

Yanga scored their penalties via Tuisila Kisinda, Shaibu Abdalla, Zawadi Mauya and Saido Ntibazonkiza while Mukoko Tonombe was denied by Beno Kakolanya.

Hassan Dilunga’s effort in the sixth minute hit the woodwork as Farouk Shikhalo stretched but could not reach the ball. Simba won a free-kick at the right-wing position, David Kameta delivered and Yanga’s clearance landed on Dilunga’s path whose final shot could not bring about any impact.

Yanga almost opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Ntibazonkiza and Haruna Niyonzima worked their way into the Simba penalty box but a quick interception by Gadiel saved the day for the Msimbazi club which was outfoxed by Yanga’s speedy attack.

Timu ya Wananchi would have broken the deadlock in the 25th minute when Kennedy Juma failed to clear a free-kick as his feeble header was taken by Sarpong but Beno Kakolanya got off his line and collected the ball before the Ghanaian could head home.

The second half began on a balanced note as none of the sides created a meaningful chance to open the scoring in the first 15 minutes.

In the 78th minute, Kahata was on his way towards goal after he had been put through by Mugalu but a raised offside flag abruptly ended his journey.

The introduction of Ibrahim Ajibu and Mugalu slightly tilted the dominance of the game in favour of Wekundu wa Msimbazi in the last 20 minutes.

In the 83rd and 84th minutes Onyango, who had a good game and was named the man of the match, made two critical clearances to deny Kisinda and Waziri Junior open chances to break the deadlock.

Yanga faced their Kariakoo rivals without nine players including winger Carlos Carlinhos, Balama Mapinduzi, Lamine Moro, Yassin Mustapha, Deus Kaseke, Ditram Nchimbi, Feisal Salum, and Farid Mussa.

On the other hand, midfielder Clatous Chama, Luis Miquissone, Larry Bwalya, Jonas Mkude, Pascal Wawa, Charles Ilanfya, Aishi Manula, John Bocco, Erasto Nyoni, Shomari Kapombe, and Said Ndemla were missing for Simba.

Yanga SC XI: Farouk Shikhalo, Adeyum Saleh, Abdallah Shaibu, Saidi Juma, Mukoko Tonombe, Tuisila Kisinda, Zawadi Mauya, Michael Sarpong, Saidi Ntibazonkiza, Haruna Niyonzima,

Subs: Ramadhan Kabwili, Metacha Mnata, Paul Godfrey, Abdulkarim Yunus, Arafat Hussein, Waziri Junior, Omar Chibada.

Simba SC XI: Beno Kakolanya, David Kameta, Gadiel Michael, Kennedy Juma, Joash Onayngo, Taddeo Lwanga, Hassan Dilunga, Mzamiru Yassin, Meddie Kagere, Francis Kahata, Miraji Athumani,

Subs: Ally Salim, Ibrahim Ajibu, Chris Mugalu, Bernard Morrison, Ian Nyoni, Kelvin Moyo, Bernard Agele.

Zidane hails Benzema's potential France return as 'good news'

The Real Madrid striker hasn't featured for Les Bleus in more than five years but could be back in the picture soon

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane says it is "good news" that Karim Benzema may make a return to the French national team.

Benzema has not played for Les Bleus since November 2015, when he earned the last of his 81 caps.

The Real Madrid star has since been excluded from the national team program with the striker facing trial over a blackmail case relating to a sex tape said to involved former France team-mate Mathieu Valbuena.

As part of that case, Benzema is accused of trying to extort money from the Olympiacos star ahead of a friendly against Armenia five years ago.

Michel Moulin, one of the candidates running against incumbent FFF president Noel Le Graet, has promised that he would work to bring Benzema back to the France team.

And Zidane, who has offered his "complete support" to the striker amid his off-the-field issue, says he would look forward to seeing Benzema's return.

"That Benzema can return to the France team is good news," he said in a press conference on Wednesday.

ZIdane also spoke of another forward currently on the books at Real Madrid, Luka Jovic.

The striker is set to leave the Bernabeu on loan this month and return to former club Eintracht Frankfurt.

Jovic has scored just two goals in 32 appearances since moving to Real Madrid, but Zidane says he still believes the young striker can develop into a solid player.

"Jovic is a striker who scores goals, it is his characteristic," he said. "He's 21 years old, we understand only that. It's what we want from him.

"He has had no luck, he has had difficulties, adaptation, injuries. At 21 it is not easy. You must learn from many things."

Real Madrid are currently second in La Liga, trailing rivals Atletico Madrid by four points having also played two games more.

Before they return to league play, Zidane's side will face Athletic Club in the Supercopa de Espana semi-final on Thursday.

"When we do a little worse there are always criticisms, and it won't change," Zidane said. "In a season there are ups and downs but we always try to do better, that is what we are going to try tomorrow.

"We hope that the season will get better little by little."

Manchester City 1-0 Brighton and Hove Albion: Foden extends unbeaten run

Phil Foden scored his eighth goal of the season in all competitions to give Manchester City a victory over Brighton and Hove Albion.

Manchester City extended their unbeaten Premier League run after Phil Foden's first-half goal secured a comfortable 1-0 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion.

Foden found the back of the net a minute before half-time and that proved to be enough for Pep Guardiola's men to make it eight games without defeat – including four straight wins – in the top flight.

England international Foden took his tally for the season to eight goals in all competitions at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, making him City's highest-scoring player in 2020-21.

Bernardo Silva hit the crossbar and Gabriel Jesus made his return from COVID-19 as a substitute, but City were unable to add to their tally, with Raheem Sterling missing a stoppage-time penalty.

A lovely exchange between Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan led to the first major opening in the 14th minute, but the Belgium international was kept out by Robert Sanchez inside the six-yard box.

Mahrez was unable to supply the finish at the end of an intricate move around the visitors' box, before De Bruyne was again denied by Sanchez following a counter-attack from Brighton's first corner.

City made the breakthrough on the stroke of half-time, with Foden controlling a pass from De Bruyne exquisitely and guiding a fine finish into the bottom-left corner from the edge of the box.

Guardiola's men remained comfortably on top in the second half and after Mahrez missed a one-on-one, Sanchez denied Gundogan and saw Silva's follow-up – which came after he sent the ball through Ben White's legs – crash back off the bar.

Substitute Sterling blazed his last-gasp penalty over after De Bruyne pounced on a wayward header from Lewis Dunk and was taken down by Sanchez.

But City had done enough to move up to third and four points behind leaders Manchester United with a game in hand.

What does it mean? Defence still rules for City

City have done well to put together a strong run despite the absences of Jesus and Sergio Aguero, but their impressive form has been built on their defence.

They have conceded just two goals during their eight-game unbeaten run, while they have let in just seven in their past 14 outings in the top flight – four fewer than any other side since the start of October.

Brighton looked dangerous on the break at times, but Ruben Dias and John Stones secured a clean sheet for Ederson on his return from coronavirus.

Delightful De Bruyne

De Bruyne was at the heart of everything positive for City in the first half. By setting up Foden he has now assisted 14 goals in all competitions this season, a tally no Premier League player can better.

Jesus use raises questions

City finally have a fit striker in Jesus, but for some reason Guardiola decided to play him from the left after sending him on in the 67th minute. It was not until Sterling entered 15 minutes later that the Brazil international got to play through the middle.

What's next?

City host Crystal Palace on Sunday in the second of three straight Premier League home games, while Brighton are in action at Leeds United a day prior.

Modric challenges Odegaard to earn Real Madrid place and says Hazard will prove his worth

The Norway midfielder has struggled for regular minutes at Santiago Bernabeu this season but may get a chance in upcoming cup fixtures

Luka Modric has challenged Martin Odegaard to take his chance and prove he is worthy of a place in the Real Madrid team.

Odegaard, 22, was hugely impressive on loan at Real Sociedad last season but has struggled for regular game time since returning to Santiago Bernabeu.

Niggling injuries have robbed him of momentum and he has started each of the last five league games on the bench, only coming on once for a five-minute cameo against Celta Vigo.

Madrid don't play in La Liga again until January 23, with the Supercopa de Espana semi-final against Athletic Club on Thursday, potentially the final three days later, and a Copa del Rey clash with minnows Alcoyano up first.

Odegaard is among the fringe players hoping for a chance to impress, and Modric says it is a chance he must grasp.

"I like Odegaard as a player and as a person,” Modric told reporters. “The advice I can give him is to keep working and fighting to have his place in the team. When it is his turn to play, he must show why he is here, make a difference and help the team.

"It is the coach’s decision, here when you get to play you must give your best, perform at your best and nothing else. Not rotating is the coach's decision, you don't have to look for other reasons for this, and that's it."

Another player short of minutes this season is Eden Hazard, whose injury-stricken spell at Madrid has continued in 2020-21. The former Chelsea star returned just before the new year and recently played 75 minutes in a 0-0 draw against Osasuna.

"Hazard has had no continuity, bad luck with injuries,” Modric said. “All these are reasons why he has not been able to show his best level. He is a great player; he will show this at Madrid. Now with continuity and without injuries he will show why Madrid has signed him."

If Madrid beat Athletic, they will play the winner of Wednesday’s game – Real Sociedad or Barcelona – in the final on January 17.

"There are no favourites,” Modric insisted. “The four teams that are here have a chance to win the tournament. We are going to do our best to try to reach the final and win another title, but first we have to win tomorrow's game.

"We're fine. We have been in Malaga for three days preparing for the game and the team's feeling is good. We know that a very important match awaits us and we look forward to it."

LIVE: Tottenham vs Fulham

86' Son! Spurs pile forward, and Son finds space to attack Lamela's cross. His header was well wide in the end, and replays show he was likely to be flagged for offside.

82' Spurs are panicking here, and it is all looking a little frantic. This could play into Fulham's hands perfectly with only seven minutes remaining at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

77' The warning signs were there for Spurs, but there is still plenty of time to grab a second goal.

72' OFF THE POST!!!! Fulham get caught playing a high line, and Son capitalises as he races onto Ndombele's pass. He looks destined to score but gets the ball caught underneath his feet before he shoots. That makes life harder for him and his effort trickles towards goal before hitting the post and bouncing into Areola's path.

69' Since a 2-1 home win in November 2008, Fulham haven’t scored more than once in any of their last 13 Premier League meetings with Tottenham. They may struggle to improve that record this evening, but Parker's men have shown they could snatch a draw.

63' Kane must be able to read our coverage as he bursts into life to latch onto a pass inside the box. The striker aimed for Son at the back post but his cross is poor, and Areola flies off his line to gather possession.

62' Kane has barely had a touch in the first 15 minutes of the second half. This has become a real midfield battle, and Fulham are giving it everything they have got.

60' Reid's effort smashes against the wall and Spurs clear the danger.

59' Potential scoring opportunity for Fulham as Hojbjerg gives away a free-kick on the edge of the box...

56' With the likes of Bale, Lamela, Alli and Lucas Moura on the bench, Mourinho must be tempted to alter his team in order to regain the upper hand. Spurs look like they need to stretch the play a little more and make Fulham work much harder than they currently are doing.

54' SAVE! Areola once again comes to Fulham's rescue with a sensational diving save from a Winks shot. Winks picked up possession after Fulham cleared a corner, but he had enough time to aim for the bottom corner. His strike was going in until Areola stretched himself to concede another set-piece.

51' The game is nicely poised at the moment. Fulham feel they can get something if they score next, while Spurs are just struggling to take control after the interval.

49' SIDE NETTING! Fulham camp inside Spurs' half before the ball is worked out to the wing for Tete. The wingback has options, but he decides to go for goal instead, and his shot hits the side of the net leaving Lloris with nothing to do.

47' Both teams make flying starts to the second 45 minutes with quickfire attacks, but neither side register a shot towards goal, and it remains 1-0.

46' The game is back underway!

Ndombele and Sissoko have combined well on occasions, but Mourinho will want to see more from the former in the final third. That position is not natural to him, so changes could be made in order to get the second goal they crave.

Kane's goal ensures Tottenham have the advantage at the interval, but the scoreline does not tell the full story. Reguilon and Son should have opened the scoring before Kane did, while Anguissa have gone close for Fulham. Both teams have attacked with purpose and the second half could easily deliver more goals.

45' + 1' HALF-TIME - TOTTENHAM 1-0 FULHAM.

45' One minute of added time to come...

43' Parker's side may be down on the scoresheet, but they have shown they have what it takes to score before this match is over. Spurs will know they need to put this game beyond them if they want all three points.

41' Anguissa and Lloris seem to be having their own little battle. The Fulham midfielder drills another shot towards the bottom corner, but Lloris gets his body behind the ball and keeps him at bay.

39' Wasteful! Kane takes two or three Fulham players out of the game with a defence-splitting pass towards Hojbjerg. The former Southampton man is not known for his goals, and it is obvious now why that is the case. Once he latches onto the pass he needs to go for goal with power, instead, he tries to curl a shot past Areola, and the goalkeeper barely has to move to make the save.

37' After a tough 15 minutes, Fulham are now starting to come back into the game and look more threatening in possession.

35' WIDE!!! Fulham showcase their attacking prowess and nearly level matters through Loftus-Cheek. Tete picked out the Chelsea loanee on the edge of the box, and Loftus-Cheek's bicycle kick has narrowly missed the bottom corner. Lloris was anxious by that strike!

32' Kane is the second-highest goalscorer in London derbies in Premier League history with 36 goals to his name, with only Thierry Henry netting more with 43.

30' KANE! The England skipper misses a header at the near post, and Fulham get lucky on that occasion. Aurier's cross looks to have taken a deflection off a defender just before Kane was about to head home. That touch has put him off, and he has skied his strike over the bar.

27' Mourinho can relax now after a flat start from his side. Hopefully, they push for a second goal before half-time, but Fulham have shown they will be no pushovers if the first 30 minutes are anything to go by.

24' WHAT A SAVE!!! Son cannot believe he has not scored, but Areola denies him for the second time in this match. The Spurs forward stayed onside and asked for the cross to be played to the near post, he has thrown everything behind his diving header, but it is not enough to beat Areola.

22' It may have taken them 20 minutes, but Spurs are slowly taking control of this match. Winks and Hojbjerg are starting to break up any Fulham attacks, and the pressure could soon tell.

20' Dier goes close with the free-kick after seeing his shot blocked by the Fulham wall. However, Spurs failed to produce anything from the resulting corner, and it remains 0-0.

18' Son is denied at the near post thanks to a stunning save from Areola. The forward latched onto a cross from Aurier, only to see his effort blocked. In the aftermath, Fulham have conceded a free-kick on the edge of the box.

17' SAVE!!! Anguissa stings the palms of Lloris with a powerful drive from inside the box. He turned past Sissoko far too easily, but Lloris was on hand to punch the ball away.

16' Dier has told the physios to go back to the bench, and he has limped back into the box to defend a corner.

15' Spurs have an injury to deal with here as Dier goes down. He was initially off the pitch, but he has rolled back over the touchline in order to receive treatment.

13' After a game of head tennis, the danger is cleared, but Fulham are growing into this match.

12' Fulham win a corner...

10' Mourinho has named three holding midfielders in his team, and it may come back to bite him if Spurs fail to bring Son and Kane into the game.

7' Even though they are in the relegation zone, Fulham have started well here. They are trying to dictate the tempo of the match and look confident on the ball.

5' CLOSE! Reguilon falls to his knees in frustration after missing two chances to score. The first effort was going well wide, but it hit Andersen and rebounded back to him. He stayed alert and drilled his second shot towards the top corner, only to clear the crossbar. Big chance that for Spurs!

3' Fulham register the first shot of the match, but it is tame at best from Adarabioyo as he fails to generate any power at the back post. The visitors won a free-kick which caused Spurs problems, but the defender did not know too much about his shot, before Lloris dived on the loose ball.

2' Tottenham will wear their traditional white and blue strip this evening, with Fulham in their all-yellow away kit.

1' We are underway!

The two teams are on the field and we are moments away from kick-off in north London.

Tottenham have won ten of their last 11 Premier League games against Fulham, with their only defeat coming way back in 2013.

Mourinho makes ten changes to the team that beat Marine 5-0 in the FA Cup on Sunday. The likes of Kane, Son, Lloris, Dier all return to the fold, while Alli and Bale are on the bench. Parker makes six alterations to the team that battled bast Queens Park Rangers, with top scorer Bobby Decordova-Reid returning to the starting XI. However, there is no place in the squad for striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

SUBS: Joe Bryan, Tim Ream, Josh Onomah, Michael Hector, Aboubakar Kamara, Terence Kongolo, Marek Rodák, Ademola Lookman, Neeskens Kebano.

FULHAM (3-5-2): Alphonse Areola; Ola Aina, Joachim Andersen, Tosin Adarabioyo; Kenny Tete, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Harrison Reed, Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, Antonee Robinson; Ivan Cavaleiro, Bobby De Cordova-Reid.

SUBS: Toby Alderweireld, Gareth Bale, Carlos Vinicius, Joe Hart, Erik Lamela, Matt Doherty, Ben Davies, Lucas Moura, Dele Alli.

TOTTENHAM (4-2-3-1): Hugo Lloris; Serge Aurier, Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier, Sergio Reguilon; Harry Winks, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg; Moussa Sissoko, Tanguy Ndombele, Son Heung-Min; Harry Kane.

Mourinho's side come into the game with a real spring in their step after winning four of their last five matches. They have kept three clean sheets in that time, while Fulham have also not lost in any of their previous five, with four of those games ending in a draw.

Despite the late notice, Spurs will be confident of overcoming the Cottagers, with the two sides sitting at opposite ends of the table. Tottenham can climb as high as third with a victory, while Fulham are hoping to escape the bottom three with a win on the road.

Good evening and welcome to our coverage of the Premier League meeting between Tottenham and Fulham. Spurs had initially been prepared to do battle with Aston Villa, but a late fixture change earlier this week sees them face Scott Parker's side.

Celtic chief Lawwell admits Dubai trip 'clearly a mistake' after Covid-19 case forces squad into self-isolation

After defender Christopher Jullien tested positive for coronavirus, manager Neil Lennon and 13 senior players were forced to quarantine

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell has admitted that the club's trip to Dubai last week was "clearly a mistake" after defender Christopher Jullien tested positive for Covid-19.

Following Jullien's positive test, manager Neil Lennon and 13 senior players were forced into self-isolation having come into contact with Jullien during the trip.

Initially, the club defended their decision to travel to the Middle East for training, but Lawwell has now said that travelling during a coronavirus surge was ill-advised.

"On reflection, looking back and looking with hindsight and looking at the outcome of the trip, clearly it was a mistake and for that I profoundly apologise to our supporters," Lawwell told Celtic's official website.

"This horrific pandemic has affected the whole of society. It's affected people here in Scotland, it's affected our supporters, it's affected our football and it's affected our club - probably our club more than any."

Celtic's trip generated further controversy when photos emerged of players and staff not wearing masks or social distancing at various points during the trip.

Even Scotland First Minister Nicola Sturgeon weighed in on the journey to Dubai, saying she was "disappointed" and "frustrated" by Celtic's actions in the United Arab Emirates.

“This whole episode should underline how serious the situation we are in right now is and why everyone – including football – should be erring on the side of caution," Sturgeon said earlier this week. “I would hope Celtic themselves will reflect seriously on all of this.”

Lawwell admitted that the recent surge in Covid-19 cases across the UK meant his team's trip should have been reconsidered.

"Clearly the landscape has changed significantly - particularly in the run-up to us going to Dubai - in terms of the infection rate," he added. "The protocols were robust, they're proven, and that's what we put in place for the Dubai trip.

"Overall, the decision to go was for the right reasons - it was performance - and of course the outcome of that has been really disappointing. I do understand how people are questioning the decision to go."

Celtic currently sit 21 points behind Scottish Premiership leaders Rangers but do have three games in hand.

LIVE: Real Sociedad vs Barcelona

4' WHAT A SAVE! The ball comes out to Zaldua and the Socieded man unleashes an effort that looks destined for the top corner before Ter Stegen tips it over the bar.

3' De Jong is up to head clear from a Sociedad free-kick as the game settles into a similar rhythm

2' Dembele almost works space to shoot on the edge of the box but the sheer numbers Sociedad have in defence make it impossible in the end.

1' Barcelona get the first period of extra time underway!

Oyarzabal's second-half penalty cancelled out De Jong's opener for Barcelona as the teams end the 90 minutes locked at 1-1. It was an end-to-end affair that could have gone either way so let's see if an extra 30 minutes can separate the sides.

90' + 2' END OF 90 MINUTES: REAL SOCIEDAD 1-1 BARCELONA

90' + 1' Le Normand defends well from Dembele before Barcelona work the ball back forward. The hosts scramble it clear in what is likely the last act of the 90 minutes.

90' + 1' There will be one minute of added time!

90' Merino gets on the end of Oyarzabal's delivery but the header is deflected clear by Mingueza who knew very little about it.

89' Monreal feeds Isak on the left flank and the forward wins a corner off De Jong.

88' Araujo launches it forward and Dembele forces a throw-in. Alba then floats a ball to the back post where De Jong does his best to win his duel, but Sociedad clear.

87' Despite the late stage, the intensity has actually dropped slightly. Merino lines up a shot but is dispossessed by Lenglet before the referee blows for a Barcelona free-kick.

86' We enter the final five minutes of what has been an end-to-end contest. Can either side find a late winner or will this game go beyond the regulation 90 minutes?

84' A threatening move comes to nothing when Trincao loses out on the right-hand side.

83' Barcelona almost create a golden opportunity to go ahead. Dembele bursts down the right before cutting the ball back into the box but it's just behind Griezmann.

81' Sociedad almost open up their opponents again but the Barcelona defence scramble the ball to safety.

80' Oyarzabal is well found from a goal-kick but can't bring the ball under control He would've had only a couple of defenders in his way had he done better.

78' Lenglet gets on the end of the corner but can't direct his header on target.

77' SAVE! Some lovely quick feet from Pedri opens up a yard of space for the Spaniard to take a shot on. It's on target and forces Remiro to tip it over the bar for a corner.

76' Pedri does well to get into the box before he is down. There's a half-hearted appeal for a penalty but the referee is having none of it.

75' Barcelona defend a corner well before their opponents work it into space on the right flank. However, Gorosabel's first-time cross is sliced out for a goal-kick.

74' Barcelona have won this competition a record 13 times. If they're to make it 14, they'll need to overcome a spirited Real Sociedad here!

72' Barcelona spray it around in front of the organised Sociedad defence. Slowly, the White and Blues push out and force their opponents back to Ter Stegen. The away side try again, but an attempted throughball for Dembele is misplaced and out for a Sociedad goal-kick.

70' Isak gets to the byline and draws Ter Stegen out his goal. The forward dinks the ball back into the box but it doesn't fall to a teammate and the visitors can clear.

69' SHOT! The hosts keep possession well and work Portu into space for a shot. He shifts it onto his right before flashing an attempt wide of the post!

67' Barcelona play it from right to left in an attempt to open up some space. The hosts hold firm before La Blaugrana come again. They're being patient until Dembele scorches past Monreal and whips in a low cross that is eventually cleared.

65' Portu does well to thwart an attempted break from De Jong before the hosts settle into what, by this game's standards, could be classed as a comfortable spell of possession.

63' JUST WIDE! Sociedad press forward momentarily before Barca break again. A lovely move ends with Dembele who cuts in from the right and fires a shot that flashes inches wide.

62' CLOSE AGAIN! The ball is loose in the Socieded box but it just won't fall for a Barca player who would've had the simplest of tap-ins.

61' CLOSE! The Catalonian side play the ball around nicely in a tight space before a chance almost falls for Braithwaite. He's on the stretch and does his best to nudge it goalward, but Sociedad are able to escape.

59' OVER! A ball to the back post falls for Griezmann to strike on the volley. It's well hit, but flies a couple of yards over Remiro's bar.

57' What a frantic start we've had to the second half. Sociedad are in an advanced position again and win a corner after Alba and then Lenglet are called upon.

56' Isak lines up the free-kick but his effort is tame, striking the middle of the Barcelona wall.

52' Immediately, the visitors create a chance to restore their lead. De Jong is clean through and has a golden opportunity to score, but delays a fraction too long, allowing Gorosabel to nip in and steal the ball away. The referee appears to point to the spot at first, before the free-kick is given to Sociedad.

51' VAR confirms the penalty!

49' PENALTY REAL SOCIEDAD! Guridi breaks forward and finds Merino on the left. The midfielder whips an early cross in that strikes De Jong on the arm and, after taking an extra second or two to think about it, the referee points to the spot. It will be checked by VAR.

48' Busquets does well to turn Guridi before being clipped and drawing a free-kick from the referee.

47' Right from the off, the hosts press forward. Monreal and Oyarzabal ghost up the left-hand side before winning a corner. It comes to nothing and Barcelona break with Griezmann. Mingueza has space to cross from the right but it's well cleared.

46' We're back underway for the second half!

With just a goal in it, the game is evenly poised. Prior to the breakthrough, Barcelona had looked vulnerable on the break so the hosts will remain optimistic they can get back into it. Conversely, Koeman will be hoping his side can push on and perhaps exploit the extra space they might be afforded to increase their advantage and progress without any late headaches. The second half is next!

Barcelona lead Real Sociedad 1-0 at the break thanks to De Jong's goal in the 39th minute. Both sides enjoyed spells when they were in the ascendency, but it was the visitors that made it count when Griezmann picked out his Dutch teammate whose header looped over Remiro into the far corner. Earlier, the hosts had enjoyed a promising start and threatened to score, but couldn't find that extra bit of quality required.

45' + 1' HALF-TIME: REAL SOCIEDAD 0-1 BARCELONA

44' CLOSE! The White and Blues come again and the space opens up on the left. Monreal is played in behind and tries to pick out a teammate in the box but it is agonisingly out of reach as it dribbles across the box.

41' SAVE! Isak has another shot on Ter Stegen's goal as the hosts look for an immediate equaliser. It's from distance but it's struck well, forcing the Barca keeper to palm it clear rather than catch.

38' The hosts have a chance to break after absorbing a spell of pressure. The ball is at the feet of Oyarzabal but instead of picking out a teammate, he decides to charge towards goal and is easily dispossessed.

36' SHOT! Griezmann has the ball on the edge of the area and decides to take the shot on. It's well blocked but the loose ball dribbles out for Dembele who follows suit, striking his first-time effort high and wide.

34' Dembele sizes up his options but is staring at the entire opposition team. The ball is eventually worked to Pedri in the box but there's nothing he can do in such little space and Sociedad clear briefly.

32' La Blaugrana break forward again and there looks to be an ocean of space to exploit behind the Sociedad defence that is high up the pitch. However, Le Normand times his last-ditch challenge to perfection, thwarting the breakaway chance.

30' Barcelona have another chance as Dembele does well to get to the byline on the right-hand side. He dinks the ball to the back post where Alba is waiting and attempts an audacious bicycle-kick volley. It's flying wide but is kept in before the hosts eventually scramble the ball to safety.

29' CHANCE! The visitors are finally able to create a pocket of space and it's for Mingueza who has burst up the right flank. He whips in a delivery that Braithwaite gets on the end of but can't control, with the ball going out for a goal-kick.

27' Some lovely skill from Dembele keeps the visitors in possession with the Frenchman then feeding Pedri on the left flank. However, he is surrounded by Sociedad defenders and eventually loses possession.

26' SAVE! Braithwaite is well found by Araujo with a ball over the top. The forward takes a good first touch before firing a low effort that is well saved by Remiro.

25' Guridi is penalised in the middle of the park for a foul on Busquets.

23' Pedri does well to steal the ball away from Monreal. It's worked across to the left and when the space opens up for Lenglet, he can't help himself but take the long-range shot on. However, it's dragged well wide of the mark.

21' De Jong is dispossessed in the middle of the park and here they come again. The ball in from the right looks to be perfectly weighted for Merino but Isak fancies having a go himself and wastes the chance.

20' Mingueza is forced to block a shot from the edge of the box as Sociedad continue to pour forward. Can they make their early pressure count?

19' Mingueza gives away a needless free-kick in a dangerous area. The ball is loose briefly before the referee blows for a Barcelona free-kick.

17' CHANCES! Dembele takes on Monreal and gets the better of him before cutting into the box and having a shot that is well blocked. The hosts immediately go on the attack with another chance opening up for Isak. This time, Ter Stegen is quick off his line to tighten the angle and save the striker's attempted chip.

16' Monreal has acres of space on the left flank to pick out a cross. He whips it in towards the near post and Isak gets to it first but can only direct his effort a long way over the bar.

14' Griezmann finds space on the right and is found well by De Jong. Cover quickly comes out to crowd the Frenchman out.

13' From a corner, the hosts go close again but Le Normand's header is straight into the arms of a grateful Ter Stegen.

11' WIDE! This is a chance. It's sloppy from Alba and then Griezmann who both lose out to Gorosabel. The Sociedad defender finds Portu in space in the box but the forward drags his effort wide.

10' Play is stopped as Merino is down after a clash with Busquets. The Barcelona midfielder won the ball but his leg caught Merino in the knee on the follow-through.

10' Now that the early pressing phase appears to be over, Sociedad have settled into what looks like a 5-4-1 shape. Let's see how that plays out for them.

8' Dembele swings the ball in from the right but it's well cleared by Monreal who took a sore one from Braithwaite in the process.

7' Monreal catches Griezmann and concedes a free-kick. The Frenchman is down momentarily but he's fine to continue.

6' Barcelona enjoy a brief spell of possession but they're being swarmed at every opportunity. The game has yet to settle.

4' CHANCE! The White and Blues go close when Isak gets on the end of a good cross from the right. Ter Stegen would likely have had it covered had the header been on target but that's an early warning for the visitors.

3' The opening exchanges have been scrappy with neither side really able to bring the ball under control. The hosts are pressing high and with energy which has Barcelona unsettled.

1' The referee blows his whistle and Barcelona get us underway here at the Nuevo Arcangel.

The players are emerging from the tunnel and kick-off is moments away!

Opposite number Ronald Koeman has also made three changes from the side that thumped Granada. Araujo and Lenglet join the defence in place of Dest and Umtiti, but the big news is that Lionel Messi is out. The Argentinian appeared to signal to the bench that he wanted to be taken off late on against Granada so perhaps he is nursing a slight knock. Braithwaite starts through the middle in his place with Dembele and Griezmann either side.

Imanol Alguacil has made three changes to his starting XI. Monreal returns after a spell on the sidelines, slotting in for Munoz at left-back, while beside him starts Le Normand with Sagnan dropping to the bench. The only other change comes in midfield with Guevara preferred ahead of Zubimendi in the middle of the park. David Silva remains out.

BARCELONA SUBS: Miralem Pjanic, Inaki Pena, Neto, Samuel Umtiti, Trincao, Junior Firpo, Riqui Puig, Ilaix Moriba, Sergino Dest.

BARCELONA (4-3-3): Marc-Andre ter Stegen; Oscar Mingueza, Ronald Araujo, Clement Lenglet, Jordi Alba; Frenkie de Jong, Sergio Busquets, Pedri; Ousmane Dembele, Martin Braithwaite, Antoine Griezmann.

REAL SOCIEDAD SUBS: Joseba Zaldua, Jon Bautista, Aihen Munoz, Ander Barrenetxea, Willian Jose, Modibo Sagnan, Martin Zubimendi, Adnan Januzaj, Gaizka Ayesa.

REAL SOCIEDAD (4-3-3): Alex Remiro; Andoni Gorosabel, Igor Zubeldia, Robin Le Normand, Nacho Monreal; Jon Guridi, Ander Guevara, Mikel Merino; Portu, Alexander Isak, Mikel Oyarzabal.

It’s a completely different story for their opponents who enter the contest on an eight-game unbeaten run. Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann both bagged a brace in a 4-0 win over Granada last time out that moved La Blaugrana up to third in the La Liga standings - albeit they remain seven points behind Atletico Madrid having played two more games. However, the focus will be away from that for now as they look to progress into another final.

The 37th Spanish Supercopa begins as the White and Blues welcome a rejuvenated Barcelona. After a promising start to the 2020-21 domestic campaign, the hosts now find themselves on a dismal run having picked up just one win from their last 12 matches in all competitions. In their most recent outing, they lost 3-2 away to Sevilla so maybe a two-week break to focus on cup competitions is just what they need.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the Spanish Supercopa semi-final meeting between Real Sociedad and Barcelona from the Nuevo Arcangel.

The Algeria striker is back in the French top-flight where he had spent the entire 2019-20 season on loan at Monaco

Lyon have announced the signing of Islam Slimani on an 18-month deal from Leicester City which will run until June 2022.

The Ligue 1 club moved for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations winner following the departure of Moussa Dembele to Atletico Madrid on an initial loan, with an option to buy.

Slimani joins Rudi Garcia's side on a free transfer having played just 19 minutes of Premier League football for Leicester City in this campaign.

The 32-year-old is expected to boost Lyon's attacking force which already has Cameroon's Karl Toko Ekambi, Zimbabwe's Tino Kadewere and Ivory Coast's Maxwel Cornet.

Back in August 2016, Slimani joined the Foxes from Sporting CP and he made 47 appearances in all competitions.

During his time at the King Power Stadium, the Algeria forward enjoyed loan spells at Newcastle United, Fenerbahce and most recently Monaco where he contributed nine goals and seven assists during the 2019-20 Ligue 1 campaign.

"I am happy and proud to be at a big club like Lyon. I thank the president. When I was little, I have already come to the region, to Givors, to play tournaments with my team. I am a combative person who gives everything on the field,” Slimani said.

“I hope to bring my experience, my fighting spirit. I come to a team which is first in the championship, which plays well and scores goals. I want to help the team achieve its goals. I want to do something good here.

"Lyon is a big club which plays for the first places every year, which plays to participate in the Champions League.”

Lyon lead the Ligue 1 table with 40 points after 19 matches - a point above second-placed PSG. They host Metz for their next league outing on Sunday.

Klopp backs 'new signing' Thiago for big Liverpool role

The former Sofapaka custodian has arrived in the Mainland Premier League to bolster the Ice-cream Makers’ squad

Uganda goalkeeper Mathias Kigonya has completed a transfer move to Azam FC of Tanzania.

Kigonya is the latest player to be signed by the former Mainland Premier League champions and he arrives just after confirming his exit from Forest Rangers of the Zambian Super League.

Kigonya signed for Forest Rangers in 2019 when he was handed a two-year deal and his latest move means he has joined his international compatriot Nicholas Wadada.

“We have completed the signing of Ugandan goalkeeper [Mathias] Kigonya who will be with us for two years. His signing was recommended by head coach George Lwandamina,” Azam announced on Wednesday.

At Azam, he is expected to fight for regular places with Benedict Haule, David Mapigano and Wilbol Kaseke. In the previous transfer window, Azam signed Mapigano from Gor Mahia and even though the Tanzanian had a good start, poor results from matchday eight of the ongoing campaign saw him used inter-changeably with Haule.

Kaseke has always played second fiddle but was prominently deployed in the Mapinduzi Cup where Azam were eliminated by Yanga SC in the semi-finals.

As he confirmed Forest Rangers’ departure, the former Bright Stars goalkeeper penned a heartfelt goodbye message.

“It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to you,” the former Sofapaka and Kakamega Homeboyz goalkeeper said.

“I cannot thank you enough for the lessons you’ve taught me and the friendship you’ve so freely given. Absolutely, like any great team, you encouraged me, assisted me, and made me better at what we do.

“Thank you for sharing the wins and losses, the triumphs and the tribulations. Working with you has been a true privilege.

“I leave with friends, memories, and lessons learned from each of you. It’s been a pleasure getting to know and working with you during my time in Zambia.”

“To the management, technical and the playing unit, thank you for giving me a professional home,” he added.

“To the fans and well-wishers, I can't thank you enough for all your support. I’m sad to be leaving yet excited for what lies ahead, for me and for all of you. I hope our paths intersect time and again.”

Azam are understood to have signed Kigonya and Mpiana Mozinzi in the mini-transfer window – that will close on January 15 - in order to rescue their season.

Ozil to Fenerbahce transfer is 'closer than ever' says sporting director Emre as Arsenal exit nears

The Gunners outcast has spoken openly about his desire to play for the Turkish giants, with his time in the Premier League seemingly coming to an end

Mesut Ozil appears on the verge of leaving Arsenal with Fenerbahce director Emre Belozoglu claiming the playmaker is ‘closer than ever’ to joining the Turkish giants.

Speculation around the move has been growing in recent days with both parties speaking openly about the prospect.

Ozil himself said on Twitter that he wanted to play in Turkey before he retired, and would only play for Fenerbahce if he did so. His agent, Erkut Sogut, admitted he hoped the deal would go ahead, saying Ozil wasn’t a Fenerbahce fan, but a fanatic.

Fener president Ali Koc said on Tuesday that progress was being made, and sporting director Emre now says the ‘dream’ move is getting closer.

“I look very positively on behalf of the community and the president, but I do not see it easily. We have plans of our own,” Emre told reporters.

“Mesut also has a contract with his club. He is a superstar. We are talking about a player who contributed to a goal in every other game at every club he has played for. I would be very pleased if Fenerbahce could have such a player.

“We had a meeting with him and his manager. Mesut is closer than ever. The fact that Mesut had this childhood dream and Fenerbahce had the dream has made this step so close for the first time.”

Emre did stress that if Ozil does sign, he won’t be on a contract which would disrupt the club’s existing wage structure.

He said: “After the meeting process with Mesut’s club is over, we will hold meetings between ourselves. If Mesut agrees with his club on the terms we want, it won’t stretch our financial limits this year.

“Fenerbahce and other clubs no longer have to power to bring in footballers on €4-5 million contracts. There will be no numbers that would disturb the balance or affect the salaries of other players, we do not have that ability.”

Fener are currently second in the Super Lig, level on points with leaders Besiktas and two clear of Galatasaray in third.

With Ozil’s club future up in the air, there have also been developments surrounding his international career. Fritz Keller, president of the German FA (DFB) has contacted Ozil in an attempt to reconcile with the player following his acrimonious retirement from the national team in 2018.

Tau makes Premier League debut against Manchester City

The 26-year-old has been handed a spot in the Seagulls' starting XI for Wednesday's clash in Manchester

Brighton & Hove Albion forward Percy Tau has been given a chance to make his Premier League debut against Manchester City on Wednesday.

The South Africa star was yet to play in the English top-flight since his switch from Mamelodi Sundowns in 2018 because he had spent the last two-and-a-half years on loan in Belgium.

On Sunday, the 26-year-old was introduced as a second-half substitute as Brighton defeated League Two club Newport County on penalties in the FA Cup.

For the encounter at the Etihad Stadium, Tau joins Leandro Trossard and Alexis Mac Allister to complete the Seagulls' attacking force.

Brighton are currently enduring an eight-game winless streak in the Premier League since their 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in November 21.

Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez is another African star who will feature in the encounter, for opponents Manchester City.

Mali's Yves Bissouma is suspended for the Seagulls after he received his fifth yellow card of the season earlier this year against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

14' SAVE! Gundogan opens up the Brighton defence with a neat offload towards De Bruyne in the left inside channel. The Belgian takes a touch to open up space for a strike on his right foot, only to be denied by a good block from Sanchez.

13' White sends Trossard down the left flank and he clips a dangerous ball to the back post. It evades the yellow shirts attacking the delivery before Veltman eventually latches on to the ball, but he blasts his effort high and wide.

12' Mahrez has a run at the Brighton defence, but his attempt to get the bettter of Mac Allister ends in disappointment as the forward wins possession for the visitors.

7' BLOCK! Mahrez combines with Cancelo, who clips a cross to the back post. Foden collects and works an offload back to Zinchenko to strke, but he sees his effort blocked by a wall of yellow shirts.

5' Brighton are knocking the ball around well in the middle of the park and have not been frightened to take the game to the home side.

3' Foden tries to combine with Gundogan in the final third, but the German takes a heavy touch and sends the ball out for a goal-kick.

1' We're underway at the Etihad Stadium.

Brighton have never won an away league game against Man City in 10 previous attempts (D2 L8), losing their last six visits in a row between 1983 and 2019.

Brighton have made seven changes to their side that beat Newport in the FA Cup last time out. Sanchez replaces Steele in goal, while Burn starts in the back three next to Webster and Dunk. Propper, Veltman and Bernardo get starts in a four-man shield in front of the back three alongside White. Tau and Trossard join Mac Allister in the final third, with the South African forward making his first start. Yves Bissouma misses out due to suspension.

City have made four changes to their side from their 3-0 win over Birmingham City at the weekend. Ederson retakes his place between the posts after recovering from Covid-19. Stones slots into the back four in place of Walker, while Zinchenko starts ahead of Mendy at left-back. De Bruyne pushes forward to start in attack alongside Foden and Mahrez. Jesus drops to the bench as Gundogan gets the call to play in midfield. Sergio Aguero is still absent after being forced to quarantine.

MANCHESTER CITY (4-3-3): Ederson; Joao Cancelo, John Stones, Ruben Dias, Oleksandr Zinchenko; Bernardo Silva, Rodri, Ilkay Gundogan; Riyad Mahrez, Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden.

Brighton required penalties to beat Newport County in the FA Cup last time out. Jason Steele was the man on the spot for the Seagulls, saving four penalties to send Graham Potter's men through to the fourth round. Their form in the Premier League has been desperate of late, failing to win their last eight matches. They did salvage a draw after trailing Wolves 3-1 last time out, but Brighton are in need of a victory to distance themselves from the relegation zone.

Manchester City are firing on all cylinders after reeling off six wins on the bounce in all competitions. Pep Guardiola's men overcame Manchester United and Birmingham in the EFL Cup and FA Cup respectively to continue their strong run. The Citizens now turn their attention back to the Premier League where they can put the pressure back on their city rivals at the top by adding another win to their collection against Brighton this evening.

Good evening and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Manchester City and Brighton and Hove Albion at the Etihad Stadium.

SuperSport United 2-1 Bloemfontein Celtic: Grobler nets winner to make history

The victory moves United to 22 points, just two behind pace-setters Sundowns, ahead of the Pretoria derby on Saturday

SuperSport United kept the pressure on Mamelodi Sundowns ahead of this weekend's Tshwane derby by recording a 2-1 league win over Bloemfontein Celtic at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Grobler's headed goal took him to 58 goals in total for SuperSport, overtaking the late Abram 'Fire' Raselemane as the club's all-time leading goalscorer.

Matsatsatsana had started the game well and were rewarded in the 13th minute when former Orlando Pirates striker Thamsanqa Gabuza netted from close range after a Sipho Mbule corner.

After Ronwen Williams made an important save for the hosts, Grobler squandered the chance to double their lead when he blazed a shot over the bar.

That came back to bite Kaitano Tembo's team shortly afterwards as SuperSport defender Grant Kekana gave away a penalty after taking down Ndumiso Mabena in the box.

After Mabena had been treated for an injury, Victor Letsoalo beat Williams from the spot to restore parity in the 23rd minute.

Boosted by the goal, more chances followed for Phunya Sele Sele - but Williams was up to the challenge as he saved from Siphelele Luthuli and Andile Fikizolo just before the half-hour mark.

At the other end, Grobler had a header saved by Jackson Mabokgwane in the 37th minute but got the better of the visiting keeper in the second minute of first-half added time as he nodded in another Mbule corner.

SuperSport went searching for a third goal after the restart as Ghampani Lungu made some dangerous runs down the wing, but he was unable to pick out Gabuza on the first occasion, while a later pass found the former Orlando Pirates striker, but the resultant volley was off-target.

Having soaked up some pressure from Phunya Sele Sele, there was a 70th-minute opportunity for Mbule on the break, but he fired over the bar

At the other end, Harris Tchilimbou smashed a volley wide of goal in the 82nd minute, and although there were some anxious late moments for the Pretoria side, they managed to hold on for their fifth win in six matches. Celtic have now gone four league games without a win and sit just three points above the relegation zone.

Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila 0 - 3 Orlando Pirates: Rampant Buccaneers bounce back to winning ways

It was the biggest league win for the Buccaneers this season as they climbed two rungs up the standings

Orlando Pirates responded to a two-match Premier Soccer League winless run with a convincing 3-0 victory over Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila at Thohoyandou Stadium on Wednesday.

Two first-half goals from Deon Hotto and Frank Mhango, as well as Fortune Makaringe’s strike after the break, earned Pirates maximum points.

It was their first win of 2021 after dropping five points in their last two matches which were a 1-0 defeat by log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and a 1-1 draw against Swallows FC.

Now placed fourth on the PSL table with seven points behind Downs, Pirates dismissed a TTM side which has now gone for six straight games without tasting victory to slide one place down to 12th spot.

From the first whistle, the Buccaneers appeared the more determined side with Makaringe arriving late to connect a cross from Wayde Jooste just two minutes into the game.

Jooste was back again two minutes later but this time he was at the receiving end of Vincent Pule's cross which he could not head in.

Pirates continued to probe inside the opening 10 minutes but with Mhango getting his first start since October 2020, he was showing some rustiness when he received a pass inside the box but took long to shoot before he was closed down.

For the sixth time this season, Pirates then opened the scoring after Pule dispossessed Meshack Maphangule to set up Hotto whose initial shot was blocked by Tebogo Thangwane, before getting it right on the rebound in the 16th minute.

Tshakhuma never showed an urgency to claw their way back into the match as the Buccaneers continued pressing with Makaringe rising high on 28 minutes but could not direct his header on target off a Lorch free-kick delivery.

TTM then had a chance to draw level at the half-hour mark when Thabo Rakhale was released by Celimpilo Ngema and lobbed Sandilands only to be denied by the crossbar in what was the hosts’ best chance of the game.

As Mhango appeared lazy and not much of a threat to the opponents, he rose out of the blue, got at the end of a Thembinkosi Lorch feed to slip the ball past Tshakhuma goalkeeper Washington Arubi and double Pirates’ advantage six minutes before half time.

A chance for Tshakhuma to pull one back just before the breather was thwarted by the visitors’ goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands who dived to calmly collect Maphangule’s shot from outside the box.

For the first time this season, Pirates went to the half-time break with a two-goal cushion this season and Makaringe then completed the business for Josef Zinnbauer’s men by placing the ball beyond Arubi’s reach off a Lorch pass on 64 minutes.

TTM tried to reduce arrears three minutes later but Ngema was denied by Sandilands from an acute angle after some nice interchange with Thembisani Nevhulamba.

With 20 minutes remaining, Lorch hit the side netting after being set up by Jooste in what was his last contribution before he was substituted for Linda Mntambo.

A threatening shot from Tshakhuma’s Edgar Manaka was tipped over the bar by Sandilands moments later. Then Pule had struck his own shot off target.

Pirates managed to hold onto a clean sheet and an important victory.
