LIVE: Everton vs Manchester City

That is all from this FA Cup quarter-final, until next time!

The Citizens hopes of the quadruple are still alive, despite Guardiola constantly reminding his players to take one game at a time. They return to league action with a trip to Leicester City before facing Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League. Everton, who crash out at the quarter-final stage of the cup, remain in pursuit of the European spots in the Premier League and they next host Crystal Palace.

After a fairly uneventful 80 minutes or so, Gundogan finally opened the scoring with a diving header after Virginia's initial smart save from Laporte. With Everton throwing all their players forward in search of an equaliser, De Bruyne then doubled the visitors' lead to confirm City's FA Cup semi-final place for the third consecutive season. Down the other end, Richarlison went the closest for the hosts but couldn't beat Steffen, which is why City run out 2-0 winners at Goodison Park.

90' + 4' FULL-TIME: EVERTON 0-2 MANCHESTER CITY

90' + 2' The Everton players surrounded Oliver after De Bruyne's goal as they felt Mina had been caught by Mahrez's high boot. VAR, however, confirmed this wasn't the case, despite the hosts' best protestations for the last minute or so. Replays show Mahrez did have his foot in the air but he barely went to challenge Mina so the centre-back can have no complaints.

89' Calvert-Lewin sees his second effort in as many minutes blocked by Walker. Down the other end, Zinchenko stands up a cross for Mahrez on the break, however, Mina clatters into the Algerian and manages to clear. A few City players appeal for a penalty but referee Oliver isn't interested.

88' The visitors keep an extremely high line for Sigurdsson's deep set-piece. The Icelandic finds the head of Calvert-Lewin but the striker's efforts rolls tamely through to Steffen, who dives on the ball.

86' City are looking to reach the FA Cup semi-final in three consecutive seasons for the first time since doing so between 1931-32 and 1933-34. Gundogan's late goal here has set them well on their way to achieving the feat now.

83' Foden, who has been City's driving force here, again tests Virginia with a low, left-footed shot towards the far-right corner. The goalkeeper, however, sees it all the way and comfortably saves before attempting to unleash the run of Richarlison up top.

82' A reminder that if the scores stay level, this FA Cup tie will be on its way to extra-time and then, if required, penalties. Guardiola, with City's busy schedule, will be hoping it doesn't get that far.

81' Foden dances past a few of the hosts' defenders, racing to the byline and drilling a low ball across the face of goal. Jesus looks set to pounce but Godfrey intercepts before the Brazilian can take the shooting opportunity.

78' Sterling throws himself to the floor under pressure from Holgate but referee Oliver isn't convinced as he shakes his head and insists the City player gets up. Virginia then takes an age to pick up the ball and that perhaps signals Everton's intentions for the last ten minutes or so.

76' Calvert-Lewin whips a pass over the top of City's defence for Digne to chase but the left-back is never going to win a race against Walker. City regain possession and follow the same pattern as before, working it from side to side in an attempt to carve out an opening.

74' Gundogan, Foden and Mahrez all try to intricately play through the hosts' defence but none of them can find a way through. Ancelotti will be impressed with his side's resolute defending but they have shown very little up front so far.

73' Coleman ventures forward, overlapping Sigurdsson but the Icelandic international ignores the run of his wing-back. After working space for himself, however, Sigurdsson fails to beat the first man with his cross and Calvert-Lewin is once again left with little to feed off.

71' Mahrez and Gundogan hover over a wide set-piece and they nearly catch the hosts out by playing quickly to Zinchenko. The left-back looks to power a long-range effort towards goal but Mina and Holgate are there to block before Virginia is needed to be called upon.

70' Mina cannons a clearance into Sterling and the centre-back carries on into the Englishman with a tackle straight after. Richarlison then breaks down the other end but with no team-mates around him, he struggles to hold-up the ball and City intervene.

69' Ancelotti's men have won their last four FA Cup home games, last winning five in a row at Goodison Park between January 1999 and January 2000. Can they find a way past City here to make it five on the bounce?

68' Digne slowly wanders to the edge of the area after winning a corner for his side on the left. Sigurdsson takes it, however, the visitors deal with the cross before Gomes fires a right-footed volley wide of Steffen's goal.

66' WIDE! Mahrez drills into the feet of Foden and, with Everton dropping off, the English youngster advances towards the D. Foden then sets his sights on the bottom left corner, smashing a left-footed effort to Virginia's right but it goes wide of the target and out for a goal-kick.

65' Mahrez's first involvement sees him drift inwards and away from Digne. The left-back will now have a different attacking proposition to consider to stop the Algerian from getting on his magical left foot. For now, however, City remain patient and work it from side to side.

62' How long will it be before Guardiola is tempted to dip into the wealth of quality on his bench? De Bruyne, Mahrez and Aguero are all still watching on as it stands but it looks like the Algerian could be the first to be introduced.

61' This FA Cup quarter-final has opened up in the last few minutes but it is still far from an end-to-end affair. Guardiola's men, as is usually the case with them, continue to dominate possession but as of yet they have nothing to show for their hard work.

59' SAVE! Fernandinho goes another driving run, beating Mina and making it to the byline. The Brazilian then pulls back to near the penalty spot for Sterling, who unleashes a right-footed first-time strike towards the bottom right corner. Virginia gets across well to turn it around the post and that chance represents the best opportunity of the game so far.

58' WIDE! Sigurdsson arrows the set-piece towards the far post, where City deal with the initial cross. The loose ball falls to Richarlison, who has space but manages to poke his right-footed volley wide of Steffen's goal to the left.

56' Sterling escapes the attentions of Coleman, Mina and Gomes but then opts to play backwards as the visitors remain patiently waiting for an opportunity to test Virginia. Everton, in contrast, race forward on the counter-attack when they get the chance and Richarlison does well to win a free-kick in the middle.

54' Coleman powers down the right-hand channel, coasting past Zinchenko but his right-footed cross towards the near post is wasteful. With Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison waiting at the far post, the wing-back's cross will frustrate the forwards, who had a little bit of space in behind Dias and Laporte.

52' Fernandinho surprises Ancelotti's defence, dancing around a few tackles and making it into the area. The Brazilian, with space opening up in front of him, then strangely chooses to play wide to Sterling and the hosts regroup to shelter City away from goal.

51' Guardiola's men haven't lost a single game in all competitions this season when goalless at half-time (P8 W6 D2), whilst Everton have lost six of their nine such matches prior to today (W3).

50' Sterling twists and turns in the box but he can't escape the tackle of Mina. City think they have a corner but referee Oliver disagrees as he points for a goal-kick, which Virginia smashes long.

49' Zinchenko applauds the pass from Walker, however, he will be less pleased with the effort from Sterling. The Englishman has acres of space on the edge of the area but he blasts wildly high and wide of Everton's goal.

48' Gomes offers the visitors a free-kick in a good area to the left. Gundogan drives the set-piece towards the front post but Richarlison does well to intervene before the strike can trouble Virginia.

47' Silva evades a few tackles on his way to the byline and stands up a cross back towards the D. Foden steps in front of Fernandinho to collect the pass but he gets crowded out and City have to settle for a corner.

46' Both sets of players have returned after half-time and the second half gets underway!

Guardiola's men have dominated possession and they need a bit of magic to carve out an opportunity. Perhaps the Spaniard will look to De Bruyne or Mahrez off the bench soon, in an attempt to fire the Citizens towards the semi-finals. Ancelotti will be happy with his team's defensive performance so far but he may be asking for Everton to be more clinical when chances do arise up top.

The players wander down the tunnel at half-time with the scores level at 0-0. In what has been far from a vintage FA Cup clash, Richarlison and Mina have both gone close for the hosts, while at the other end, Sterling forced a routine save from Virginia. Barring those chances, both sides have struggled for fluency as they appear to be cancelling each other out.

45' + 1' HALF-TIME: EVERTON 0-0 MANCHESTER CITY

45' + 1' Walker offloads to Foden, who moves in from the right to drill a low, left-footed effort towards Virginia's goal. The hosts, however, stand firm to deflect it behind for a corner, which then comes to nothing.

45' There will be one minute of added time as this FA Cup quarter-final closes in on half-time.

44' OFF THE LINE! Digne whips his set-piece towards the near post, where Mina gets above Fernandinho to flick a header towards the far corner. Steffen remains motionless but Zinchenko is on the line to calmly head away from danger to keep the scores level at 0-0.

43' Sigurdsson disguises a pass into the feet of Calvert-Lewin, who offloads to Richarlison on his right. The Brazilian then races down the channel and wins another corner for the home side. Mina, Holgate and Godfrey make their way up - can they grab a goal just before half-time?

41' This is a game of contrasting play styles as Ancelotti allows Guardiola's side to have the ball as much as they want while they struggle to break Everton down. To sum it up, Gomes (10) has made the hosts' most passes, compared to City's most, Walker, who has made 50 for the away side.

40' Everton deal with the initial corner but Dias then crops up at the back post to head back across goal. Jesus looks interested for a minute inside the area before Holgate deals with the danger, flicking away a clearance towards Coleman on the right.

39' Gomes is lucky the away side don't capitalise after needlessly giving the ball away in midfield. City do, however, win a corner on the left-hand side, courtesy of Mina's block from Foden's attempted cross.

37' Gundogan moves the free-kick quickly across to Sterling, who fails to take the opportunity and Richarlison wins it off the Englishman. The hosts, however, struggle to keep possession and City get another chance to try and carve out an opening.

36' This game has been far from a thriller and has degenerated into a series of fouls in the last 15 minutes or so. This time it is Mina who clatters through the back of Jesus to offer City a free-kick out wide.

35' Digne arrows in another corner but it has the same outcome, with the visitors jumping the highest to head away. Sterling then dispossesses Coleman high up the pitch but the wing-back gets his own back as he regains possession on the right-hand touchline.

34' Laporte gets Steffen out of trouble, poking away for a corner after the goalkeeper carelessly came rushing off his line and missed the loose ball. Calvert-Lewin cuts a frustrated figure as he was inches away from having an open goal there.

33' Richarlison ghosts inside of Dias and Laporte, taking it on his left foot and drilling a strike from 25 yards out. The Brazilian's speculative effort is never going to beat Steffen from there and the American watches it trickle wide of the target.

32' Sterling is appealing to the referee for a penalty after clashing with Sigurdsson in the area. Oliver, however, is having none of it as he awards Everton the goal-kick and insists play goes on.

30' The Citizens have won 10 of their last 12 FA Cup away games, drawing with Huddersfield Town (February 2017) and losing at Wigan Athletic (February 2018) in the others.

29' With De Bruyne on the bench at the moment, Sterling takes charge of the free-kick. The Englishman strides up to the ball, whipping it over the wall but also well over Virginia's goal. Guardiola watches on looking rather disappointed with the effort on the touchline.

28' As has been the case with all Everton's set-pieces, Digne delivers the corner. The left-back's cross, however, doesn't beat the first man and City clear easily. At the other end, Richarlison carelessly pushes over Fernandinho and the visitors get a free-kick in a good position 20 yards from goal.

27' Sigurdsson runs over the set-piece, allowing Digne to clip a cross towards the far post, where Fernandinho climbs above Mina to head away for a corner to Ancelotti's men.

26' Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison and Digne lead the counter-attacking charge through the middle for Everton. Dias is then perhaps lucky to escape a booking as he cynically brings down Calvert-Lewin 30 yards from goal to offer the hosts a free-kick opportunity.

25' Gomes travels down the left-hand channel, crossing towards the back post, where Calvert-Lewin looks to test Steffen. The English forward doesn't get the chance, however, as Dias and Laporte combine effectively to remove any potential danger.

24' Still struggling from the tackle with Allan, Gundogan requires medical attention before City can get back underway with the free-kick. After a brief spray of the ankle, the German midfielder leaves the pitch and returns within the same minute.

21' Fernandinho has possession in midfield and Richarlison presses him with real intent. City's Brazilian midfielder somehow catches Richarlison's face with a loose arm, however, and the forward is going to need some medical attention as referee Oliver waves the physios onto the pitch. After a brief passage of play, Everton's number seven returns from the touchline.

19' OVER! Godfrey does well to climb above Walker at the back post, heading down for Richarlison inside the box. The Brazilian manages to hook an acrobatic strike over his head but it goes just over the bar. For a moment it appeared Steffen was concerned and the American will be grateful Richarlison's effort fell the right side of the crossbar for City.

18' CHANCE! Gundogan and Sterling exchange two or three passes, with the latter cutting inside and escaping the reach of wing-back Coleman. Space opens up outside the area and Sterling drills a right-footed shot towards the bottom left corner. Virginia, however, sees it all the way and catches the effort.

16' Foden goes down the outside as he dances past Digne, making it to the corner of the area before the left-back recovers and gives away a corner. Gundogan takes the set-piece and Everton clear with ease as no City player gets near the cross.

15' Guardiola's side are knocking the ball about at almost walking pace as they continue to look for an opening. Sterling, however, speeds things up as he cuts inside, crossing for Jesus but instead finding the hands of Virginia at the near post.

13' Foden drifts inside, smashing the perfect pass out to Zinchenko on the opposite flank. The away side then work it inwards but the move breaks down as Mina dispossesses Jesus on the edge of the box. Down the other end, Digne makes it to the byline, however, his cross gets blocked by Walker before it can find Calvert-Lewin.

11' The visitors have won each of their last six meetings with Everton – all coming in the Premier League – their best ever winning run against the Toffees.

10' Digne delivers the wide set-piece and Steffen comes out with real authority to punch away under pressure. In fact, referee Oliver decides there was too much pressure and gives City the free-kick inside their own area for a foul on the goalkeeper.

9' Dias needlessly fouls Richarlison in the left-hand channel and referee Oliver awards Everton a free-kick. Digne and Sigurdsson stand over it as Mina, Holgate and Godfrey make their way forward.

8' Steffen has to be quick off his line, rushing out to gather a loose ball after Walker heads backwards. Calvert-Lewin appears interested for a moment or so before realising the American goalkeeper is comfortably getting there first.

7' Sterling reaches the byline, cutting back for the incoming run of Zinchenko towards the penalty spot, however, Gomes is alert to the danger and clears long. Guardiola's men regain possession and continue to look for an opening around the edge of the hosts' area.

6' Coleman launches a long throw-in into the area and, despite the pressure of Mina at the near post, Zinchenko manages to hook a clearance away. The Toffees then try to cross in but it is far too close to Steffen and the American collects with ease.

4' Foden attempts to catch Virginia by surprise, shooting from range from the set-piece and Mina is forced to head it behind for the first corner of the game. The visitors work it short and Everton deal with the ball when it eventually gets delivered in.

3' Fernandinho hovers over possession in the middle of the park, inviting the foul of Allan and his Brazilian opposite number duly obliges. City have a free-kick 30 yards from goal.

2' Calvert-Lewin imposes himself early doors, combining with Richarlison in the right-hand corner but the chance fades away as the English forward gets penalised for handball.

1' Referee Michael Oliver blows his whistle to get this FA Cup quarter-final underway!

The players are wandering out at Goodison Park and shortly it will be time for kick-off.

This is the first FA Cup meeting between these two sides since the 1980-81 quarter-final, with the Citizens winning 3-1 in a replay en route to the final.

Pep Guardiola opts for six changes from midweek against Borussia Monchengladbach. After being left out for three games, Sterling finally starts again. Cup goalkeeper Steffen replaces Ederson, while there is also room for the introduction of Laporte, Zinchenko, Jesus and Fernandinho in the line-up.

Carlo Ancelotti surprisingly leaves out Keane as he switches to a back three. From their defeat against Burnley, the hosts make three other changes. Virginia replaces the injured Jordan Pickford in goal, Sigurdsson comes in for Iwobi and Coleman is brought in to operate as a right wing-back for Davies.

SUBS: Ederson, John Stones, Joao Cancelo, Sergio Aguero, Ferran Torres, Rodrigo, Kevin De Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez, Benjamin Mendy.

MANCHESTER CITY (4-3-3): Zack Steffen; Oleksandr Zinchenko, Ruben Dias, Aymeric Laporte, Kyle Walker; Bernardo Silva, Fernandinho, Ilkay Gundogan; Phil Foden, Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling.

SUBS: Alex Iwobi, Tom Davies, Harry Tyrer, Kyle John, Nathan Broadhead, Tyler Onyango, Niels Nkounkou, Zan-Luk Leban, Michael Keane.

EVERTON (3-4-1-2): Joao Virginia; Mason Holgate, Ben Godfrey, Yerry Mina; Seamus Coleman, Andre Gomes, Allan, Lucas Digne; Gylfi Sigurdsson; Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison.

The Citizens pursuit of the quadruple goes on as they travel to Goodison Park. To get to this stage, City most recently cruised past Swansea City. Everton had a rather different route to the quarter-finals, edging out Tottenham in a 5-4 thriller in the last round over a month ago.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the FA Cup quarter-final tie between Everton and Manchester City.

Meite to the rescue for Reading while Troost-Ekong’s Watford extend Championship winning run

The Super Eagles centre-back helped the Hornets keep a clean sheet in Saturday's home victory which boosted their push for Premier League promotion

Ivory Coast forward Yakou Meite scored his third consecutive goal in the Championship to salvage a 1-1 draw for Reading against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

After rescuing a point for the Royals against Nottingham Forest last Saturday, Meite ensured Veljko Paunovic's side avoided another defeat at the Madejski Stadium following Wednesday's 2-1 loss to Birmingham City.

Lyndon Dykes put QPR ahead on the stroke of half-time but the Ivorian forward did not waste them to put Reading on level terms after the restart of the encounter.

Meite finished off an Andrew Rinomhota's assist in the 57th minute to take his tally to eight goals after 28 matches this season.

Also in action were Nigeria’s Ovie Ejaria, Michael Olise and Guinea-Bissau’s Alfa Semedo while Senegal goalkeeper Timothy Dieng and Sierra Leone midfielder Osman Kakay featured for QPR.

Despite settling to share the spoils on Saturday, Reading remain sixth in the Championship table having picked up 62 points in 28 matches.

Elsewhere at Vicarage Road, Nigeria duo William Troost-Ekong and Isaac Success played significant roles in Watford's 3-0 hammering of Birmingham City.

Goals from Ken Sema, Nathaniel Chalobah and Andre Gray secured maximum points for the Hornets which stretched their winning run to five games in the English second division.

Troost-Ekong was a dominant force in Watford's defence with three completed tackles and three clearances made in the 90 minutes. Success, however, received a yellow card in the 44th minute and he managed a shot on target before he was replaced in the 57th minute.

Senegal star Ismaila Sarr did not recover in time for the game but Morocco duo Achraf Lazaar and Adam Masina were on parade for the Hornets while Angola's Jeremie Bela featured for Birmingham City.

Watford are second in the Championship table and the victory saw them trail leaders Norwich City by eight points after gathering 75 points from 38 matches.

Reading's Meite, unfortunately, has been snubbed by Patrice Beaumelle for Ivory Coast's Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Niger and Ethiopia but Watford's Troost-Ekong will be expected to join Nigeria for their final qualifying games against Benin and Lesotho.

Gerrard admits he is yet to emulate ‘master’ Klopp in one area despite Rangers title triumph

The Liverpool legend has looked to take plenty of coaching lessons from an enigmatic German, but is still working on putting those pieces together

Steven Gerrard has taken many coaching lessons from Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, but the Rangers manager admits that he is yet to emulate the “master” in certain departments.

An enigmatic German tactician has delivered long-awaited title success in England, with a Reds legend doing likewise in Scotland.

Gerrard has been earning plenty of plaudits, while seeing a future return to Anfield mooted, but concedes that he is yet to become as even-keeled as Klopp has become.

What has been said?

Gerrard has told The Telegraph on Klopp’s influence since he stepped into the dugout: “One thing I learned from Jurgen is to try and detach yourself, and be more balanced around the results.

“He is a master of it. I am not. I am trying to get better at it.

“I was an emotional player, I wore my heart on my sleeve. I feel results and want to be as authentic and real as I can.

“But as a manager you have to be more balanced.”

Gerrard’s record at Rangers

The 40-year-old former Liverpool and England captain opted to cut his managerial teeth under an Old Firm spotlight in the summer of 2018.

In his third year at the helm, arch-rivals Celtic have been knocked off the loftiest of perches in the Scottish Premiership.

Gerrard has overseen 106 victories through 161 games in charge of the Gers, with only 21 defeats suffered.

The bigger picture

Gerrard has made no secret of the fact that he would like to return to Liverpool at some stage in the future.

He is, however, tied to a contract through to 2024 and has no intention of breaking that agreement any time soon.

For now, heading into another derby date with Celtic on Sunday, he is looking to make the most of the opportunities handed to him in Glasgow.

He has added: “To come into this job, the size of the task and the journey that we have been on for nearly three years now, and in the year that we have done it.

“I think you have to be in this job, in my shoes, part of this club to realise the size and the pressure and the responsibility on this season to make it a success.”

Real Madrid boss Zidane baffled by Benzema's continued France snubs

The striker starred again on Saturday as his double kept the Blancos hot on the heels of Atletico

Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane has said he can't understand why his side's in-form striker Karim Benzema continues to be overlooked by the France national team.

Benzema scored a double on Saturday and provided a late assist as Madrid defeated Celta Vigo 3-1 to continue their La Liga title pursuit.

With the win Madrid moved to within three points of first-place Atletico Madrid, who have a game in hand over their city rivals.

What was said?

"How can we understand why Karim doesn't go with the national team? There are many who don't understand it," Zidane said in his post-game press conference.

"But it's better for me as coach of Madrid that he stays. He has done a great job for us."

Why is Benzema not being called up?

Benzema has not featured for France since 2015, when he was accused of blackmailing team-mate Mathieu Valbuena over a sex tape in which the then-Marseille player appeared.

The Real Madrid striker has since missed out on multiple major tournaments, including Euro 2016 in his homeland and France’s successful run to the World Cup title in 2018.

Benzema has played at two World Cups and two European Championships for France, scoring 27 goals for Les Bleus in 81 caps.

How is Benzema performing for Madrid?

The 33-year-old has been in red-hot form for Madrid this season, scoring 23 goals in 32 appearances in all competitions.

After his brace on Saturday, Benzema has scored in six straight appearances and now has a double in back-to-back La Liga matches.

Madrid will face Eibar on April 3 after the international break, followed by a Champions League quarter-final first leg against Liverpool three days later.

Haaland reassures Dortmund fans after tossing shirt & rapidly exiting pitch following Cologne draw

The Norwegian striker scored both goals for his side but they were not enough to secure three points

Erling Haaland moved to ease concerns among Borussia Dortmund fans following his reaction at the end of the 2-2 draw with Cologne.

The Norwegian forward scored both of BvB’s goals, the second of which came in injury time.

Following the final whistle, Haaland took off his shirt and passed it to Cologne defender Jorge Mere before walking straight down the tunnel.

What has been said?

In light of the speculation surrounding Haaland’s future at the club, his response at the final whistle of the Bundesliga clash on Saturday raised eyebrows - and it was perhaps telling that he was quick to respond.

Writing on Instagram, Haaland said: “Not a great result. We will use this as motivation to be back stronger!

“Thanks to all the Borussia Dortmund fans for your continued support. We’ll be back soon!”

Haaland’s future in the spotlight

The forward has commanded plenty of column inches in recent weeks, with the likes of Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester City all credited with an interest.

Haaland has allowed others to talk about him rather than address speculation, and he has made no noises with regard to wanting to leave Dortmund this summer.

The 20-year-old has said his aim is to challenge for the biggest honours in the game, and it is likely that he will be prised away from Dortmund at some stage.

The club said earlier this month that their priority was to secure Champions League football in order to retain Haaland’s services next season.

A draw at Cologne, who had lost four of their previous five games prior to Saturday’s match, leaves Dortmund four points adrift of Eintracht Frankfurt who occupy the fourth Champions League qualification spot in the Bundesliga.

Dortmund their own worst enemy

If BvB’s aim is to secure a top-four finish to retain Haaland’s services, they are making a poor fist of it.

They are struggling for consistency, despite Haaland’s best efforts. The forward has scored 10 goals in his last eight appearances across all competitions, but his form has not been enough to propel the side into the top four.

Haaland’s opening goal against Cologne was jaw-droppingly good, as he controlled a ball into the box, shrugged off the attentions of Mere before firing the ball home.

Dortmund were unable to convert that positive early start into three points, and at times they looked devoid of ideas under coach Edin Terzic, who is a man on borrowed time with Marco Rose set to replace him at the end of the season.

Rose will bring fresh ideas and an injection of momentum, but results need to improve or he may be faced with the prospect of seeing the club’s star man head out of the door before he has got his feet under the table.

PSL Wrap: Swallows fail to leapfrog Orlando Pirates, Golden Arrows edge closer to Mamelodi Sundowns

Four matches were played on Saturday and the Team of Choice were the only side which recorded a win

Swallows FC extended their winless run in the PSL to eight matches but they let a two-goal lead slip in their 2-2 draw with Chippa United at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

The Beautiful Birds started the match like a house on fire as they scored twice within the first 10 minutes of the encounter with the Chilli Boys at sixes and sevens at the back.

Kgaogelo Sekgota broke the deadlock in the ninth minute after being set-up by Wandisile Letlabika as the left-footed attacker netted his second goal of the season.

The visitors doubled their lead a minute later through Ruzaigh Gamilden, who produced a stunning effort and it was his 11th goal this term - two behind the PSL's top scorer Bradley Grobler of SuperSport United.

However, Chippa fought back in the second-half and they levelled matters after they were awarded a penalty which was converted by Anthony Laffor to make it 2-1 five minutes after the restart.

The comeback was completed in the 61st minute when Augustine Chidi Kwem reacted quickly to Sizwe Mdlinzo's cross and he scored to ensure that the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

The result saw Chippa remain 13th on the league standings, while Swallows missed an opportunity to leapfrog third-placed Orlando Pirates and they remained fourth on the log.

At Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium, Lamontville Golden Arrows came back to hold Cape Town City to a 1-1 draw and both goals were scored in the first 13 minutes of the match.

Abdul Ajagun netted his first-ever PSL goal to hand City the lead just four minutes into the game, but Velemseni Ndwandwe's seventh goal of the season ensured that the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

The result saw Arrows remain second on the log - three points behind leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns, while City moved up to seventh place on the table.

Meanwhile, Maritzburg United stretched their unbeaten run to four matches in the league when they brushed aside TS Galaxy 2-0 at Mbombela Stadium.

Both goals were scored inside the final 16 minutes of the game with Bongokuhle Hlongwane opening the scoring in the 74th minute to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

Maritzburg's 2-0 victory was sealed by the in-form Thabiso Kutumela after a mistake by the Galaxy defence and he scored his fifth goal in as many competitive matches.

As a result, Maritzburg climbed out of the relegation zone as they moved up to 14th place on the table and Galaxy remained eighth on the standings.

Lastly, Bloemfontein Celtic were held to a 1-1 draw by Baroka FC at Dr Molemela Stadium where Victor Letsoalo's first-half goal was cancelled out by Richard Mbule's 82nd-minute strike.

Therefore, Celtic and Baroka remained 12th and 10th respectively on the standings.

Jorginho aims veiled dig at Lampard’s long-ball football as Tuchel ushers in new era at Chelsea

The Italy international midfielder believes the Blues have adopted a playing style under the German that is better suited to his strengths

Jorginho has aimed a veiled dig at the long-ball tactics of former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, with the Blues midfielder claiming to be thriving as a result of Thomas Tuchel implementing a playing style that is better suited to his game and that of many around him.

Chelsea were far from being direct during the reign of a club legend, but they were prepared to go from back to front quickly when required.

Jorginho, with his creative qualities taken into account, was unable to influence proceedings as much as he would have liked, but has taken on a prominent role with Tuchel now calling the shots.

What has been said?

The Italy international told Chelsea’s official website: “The coach wants us having control of the game, playing from behind, even when the pressure comes.

“So, for me, it’s a good way to play football that I like and enjoy, and I think it’s better for my characteristics than playing long balls, and second balls.

“When it’s Kova [Mateo Kovacic], his style is to play short, to come, so I know if he wants to play one-two or when he wants some space to move forward and to dribble.

“So, I just try to help him, either give him the space, or come over to help him and give him an option – whatever he needs to get out of the situation.

“With Kante, it’s kind of the same. When you play with your mates, you need to understand each other, and understand their characteristics as well. So, I know that Kante has big power, so I tell him when he can turn.

“With Kante, it’s more about talking: ‘Turn!' 'Man on!’ or talking so he knows I’m there for the short pass. So, I just try to give him an option to do a one-two and get out.

“Oh yes, big brains [Kante and Kovacic have big brains]. They have more legs than me, though!”

Jorginho’s record in 2020-21

The 29-year-old midfielder has taken in 28 appearances for Chelsea across all competitions this season.

He has registered seven goals and an assist across those outings, with just one more effort required in order to record a personal best in the final third.

The bigger picture

Tuchel has found the right role for Jorginho, with Chelsea now thriving as a collective.

The Blues are yet to come unstuck under their new boss, with an impressive unbeaten run stretched to 13 games.

Within that sequence, progress has been made to the quarter-finals of the Champions League – where a meeting with Porto lies in store – while a top-four standing in the Premier League has been cemented and a FA Cup quarter-final clash with Sheffield United will be taken in on Sunday.

'It's not all about goals' - Greenwood defends his form amid lengthy Man Utd drought

The talented young striker has discussed the importance of "keeping the right mentality" in order to get through a barren spell in the final third

Mason Greenwood has defended his form at Manchester United amid a lengthy scoring drought, insisting "it's not all about goals".

Greenwood scored 17 goals across all competitions in his breakout 2019-20 campaign at Old Trafford, leading to suggestions he could become the Red Devils' first choice No.9 in the coming years.

Unfortunately, the 19-year-old has been far less prolific this season and has thusly struggled to hold down a regular spot in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's starting XI, but he believes too much focus has been placed upon his output in the final third.

What's been said?

Greenwood feels he has come on leaps and bounds as an all-round player in recent months, and has no doubt the goals will start flowing again eventually because he has the right mindset.

“I think it’s about keeping the right mentality," the Red Devils forward told the club's official website.

"As you know, here at the club there’s always been a lot of goalscorers and I think the main focus that they had was just to keep the mentality strong,” he explained.

“It’s not all about goals, obviously I love scoring goals but my overall play has been improving and I’d probably say I’ve done better this year with my general play, assists and stuff like that. I think and my defending off the ball and on the ball is improving and I’m pleased with that.

“Obviously I’d like to be scoring more goals and when those two things combine together I’ll be back."

Greenwood's record for United this season

Greenwood has been in and out of Solskjaer's line-up so far this term, but has still managed to rack up 38 appearances across all competitions as United have fought for success on both domestic and European fronts.

The teenager has only scored four goals, including just one in 23 Premier League outings, but has also laid on five assists for his team-mates while switching between a traditional centre-forward berth and a role out wide on the right.

What's next?

Greenwood could get another chance to prove himself when United take on Leicester City in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Sunday.

The England frontman has a good chance of starting at the King Power Stadium with Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani both injury doubts for the last-eight tie.

The Red Devils will then take in a two-week hiatus as the international break comes into effect before preparations begin for a Premier League meeting with Brighton on April 4.

Vihiga United 0-0 AFC Leopards: Ingwe fail to find way past FKF Premier League strugglers

The home side, despite backpedalling for the better part of the second half, were able to keep the local heavyweights at bay

Resolute Vihiga United managed to pick a point against AFC Leopards in Football Kenya Federation Premier League's showdown at Mumias Sports Complex on Saturday, as the two sides played out a 0-0 draw.

The draw, second for Ingwe in the season, meant they could not go above KCB on the log in their 14th game.

Vihiga United started on a high tempo and AFC Leopards were saved by the referee's raised offside flag that ended the home side's surge towards the goal in the second minute.

Isaac Kipyegon, who was the day's captain as Robinson Kamura missed from the matchday squad, saved AFC Leopards from conceding in the fourth minute when he headed away an ambitious free-kick by Vihiga United.

Ingwe's first attempt on goal came in the eighth minute when Fabrice Mugheni's free-kick found Elvis Rupia whose header was cleared by Vihiga United for a corner. With a sizeable number of men in Vihiga United's penalty box, AFC Leopards could not manage to make use of their first corner kick.

Within a span of two minutes, Vihiga United won a corner and a free-kick but they were unlucky to break the deadlock before the referee allowed the players to take a water break in the 22nd minute.

The local heavyweights won a free-kick in the 29th minute when speedy Jaffery Owiti was brought down along the left corner. The set-piece was delivered by Kipyegon, who was playing as a centre-back in partnership with impressive Clyde Senaji, but his delivery went off target.

A combination between Marvin Nabwire and Owiti almost gave AFC Leopards the lead but the former, standing on a vantage position, misdirected his effort for a goal kick in the 38th minute.

Even with the additional three minutes, Ingwe could not find a way past a resolute Vihiga United who - in the last 10 minutes of the first half - chose to sit back to defend their area.

Mustapha Oduor was alert in the Vihiga United goal at the hour mark when he reacted in time to deny Owiti an opener with a finger-tip save.

Rupia - who has been retained in the Harambee Stars for the African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Egypt and Togo after his debut goal against South Sudan - failed to give the visitors the lead in the 62nd minute as his shot hit the side net.

The former Nzoia Sugar and Wazito FC striker was substituted in the 76th minute as Patrick Aussems introduced Austin Odhiambo for more creativity in the final third. Harrison Mwendwa and Peter Thiong'o had replaced Owiti and Caleb Olilo respectively in Aussems first changes of the game.

Despite the changes, Ingwe were unable to find a breakthrough against Vihiga United who picked up their fifth draw of the season.

Vihiga United XI: Mustapha Oduor, Dennis Ombeva, Michael Odongo, Prince Ayieko, Sammy Sindani, Mark Okola, Patrick Okullo, Lesley Otieno, Junior Adeyefa, Kevin Omondi, Dennis Wafula,

Subs: Morgan Alube, Norman Werunga, Absalom Onyango, Dennis Monda, Erick Otieno, Mike Isabwa, Wycliffe Nthata,

AFC Leopards XI: Benjamin Ochan, Isaac Kipyegon, Lewis Bandi, Washington Munene, Clyde Senaji, Fabrice Mugheni, Marvin Nabwire, Caleb Olilo, Jafefry Owiti, Bienvenue Shaka, Elvis Rupia.

Subs: Jeff Oyemba, Robert Mudenyu, Yussuf Mainge, Austin Odhiambo, Hansel Ochieng, Said Tsuma, Eugene Mukangula, Peter Thiong'o, Harrison Mwendwa.

Telles impressed by Man Utd’s group of bad losers and sees them on ‘right path’ to trophies

The Brazilian defender believes major silverware will be secured by the Red Devils in the near future as they have the right collective attitude

Alex Telles sees Manchester United on “the right path” to major silverware, with the Brazilian defender admitting that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has cobbled together a group of bad losers.

Bruno Fernandes has admitted on a regular basis across his time at Old Trafford that he does not take kindly to suffering setbacks.

Telles is another that slips into that category and sees plenty of those around him sharing a determined mindset in the Red Devils’ bid to bring a four-year wait for trophy glory to a close in 2021.

What has been said?

Telles, who moved to England from Porto in the summer of 2020, has told the Red Devils’ ‘Unscripted’ series: “Having been here at United for six months now, I’ve seen enough to say that I think we're on the right path to success.

“Quality-wise, all the players are high quality. Whoever comes into the side maintains high standards. Whoever comes in to replace another player or whoever is playing, the high standard is maintained which is really important.

“I believe we have a really good group, and you get a feel of this competitiveness as when we lose or draw everyone's really upset in the dressing room, it's noticeable amongst the players.

“I’m not the only bad loser here!

“I think this frustration when we don't win a game is a sign that we are on the right path as there are only winning players here, I'm sure we will definitely win trophies here.”

Which trophies remain in United’s sights?

United booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Europa League during their last outing, with a 1-0 win away at AC Milan keeping their continental charge on track.

They have been drawn against Granada at the next stage, with Solskjaer seeking to emulate the success that predecessor Jose Mourinho enjoyed in that competition back in 2017.

The Red Devils will remain on the trophy trail when they return to action on Sunday, with an FA Cup quarter-final clash with Leicester set to see them pay a visit to the King Power Stadium.

LIVE: Bayern Munich vs Stuttgart

45' + 2' HALF TIME: Bayern Munich 4-0 Stuttgart

45' Two minutes of stoppage time are added.

43' Lewandowski puts in a heavy challenge on Kempf who'll require treatment.

41' Stuttgart will be bitterly disappointed with this half - especially after it started so promisingly. Bayern have sliced through them with 10 men, and look hungry for even more goals.

33' Bayern are pushing for a fourth as Sane scoops a cross into Lewandowski, who can't quite engineer the space to shoot.

31' Bayern's attack had netted 74 goals prior to this game, and their fierce form is continuing with this first half display.

29' Sane's cross deflects safely into the gloves of Kobel.

27' Stuttgart look rattled currently, but they do manage to force a corner, although it amounts to nothing.

25' Well, that was a spectacular five-minute burst from Bayern! After going down to ten men, they looked vulnerable - but the hosts have responded with an emphatic spell of clinical, attacking football.

19' That's a huge moment for Bayern. It would have been easy to retreat into a defensive shape after losing a man, but they reacted with intent and now the 10 men have a lead to defend!

16' Well, Stuttgart will be pleased with this start! They've put Bayern under pressure from the first minute and with the hosts down to 10 men now, they'll be hoping to pull off a statement victory.

14' Chance for Kalajdzic! Sosa whips in a dangerous delivery and it's met by Kalajdzic who can only glance his header straight at Neuer from close range!

11' Davies is booked for a raking challenge down Endo's calf. However, the foul did look dangerous and VAR is going to evaluate the decision.

11' Chance for Stuttgart! Wamangituka beats Davies and gets deep inside the box, but Kalajdzic can't quite control his cut back and the hosts recover to clear it!

9' Muller returns a first-time pass back into Goretzka, who rushes into the box before skewing a shot comfortably wide from 18 yards.

7' Ahamada angles a low effort from 30 yards, but it trickles harmlessly wide.

6' Stuttgart have made an excellent start so far. They've shown plenty of intent and they've pinned the hosts deep inside their own half.

4' Castro lets fly from 25 yards, but his shot deflects off Boateng and away for a corner that amounts to nothing.

2' Wamangituka races to the byline before hammering a low cross into the six-yard box that narrowly evades Coulibaly.

1' Bayern get the first half underway.

The players are emerging from the tunnel and kick off is just seconds away!

Stuttgart will sense vulnerabilities in the hosts today, though. Bayern have conceded a goal in each of their last nine Bundesliga home games (last happened in 2018) – they last waited longer for a clean sheet at home in 2008 under Jürgen Klinsmann (12 straight games).

Stuttgart also make two changes after defeating Hoffenheim: Ahamada replaces Mangala, while Forster makes way for Coulibaly.

Bayern make two changes to the side that beat Lazio 2-1 during the week: Hernandez and Joshua Kimmich are replaced by Sule and Davies.

Stuttgart are eighth, meanwhile, and they’ll be hoping to shock Bayern to aid their push for European qualification.

Hello and welcome to live commentary of this Bundesliga fixture between Bayern Munich and Stuttgart. The hosts are one point clear at the top of the league and they’ll be looking to consolidate their position with a win today.

Neymar is PSG's most important player - Verratti

The Italy midfielder is looking forward to seeing his team-mate get back on the pitch after an injury-enforced spell on the sidelines

Marco Verratti has expressed his belief that Neymar is Paris Saint-Germain's "most important player".

Neymar became the world's most expensive player when he joined PSG from Barcelona for €222 million (£191m/$265m) in 2017, but has been hampered by series of niggling injuries.

The Brazilian has only just returned to training after a month out with an adductor problem, but Verratti still has no doubts about the qualities he can bring to the team when fully fit.

What's been said?

Ahead of PSG's crucial Ligue 1 clash against Lyon this weekend, Verratti told a press conference: "I still find him very strong. It's Ney.

"Even if he has been out for three, four or five weeks, he's almost always the best in training. He's a player who is technically amazing and he doesn't lose anything.

"We're very happy to see him again, I think he's the most important player for us."

How has Neymar performed for PSG this term?

Neymar has missed 20 games across all competitions due to a combination of injuries and a positive coronavirus test this season, but his numbers for goals and assists have remained high whenever he's been available to play.

The 28-year-old has 13 goals to his name from 18 games to date, including six in the Champions League and six in Ligue 1, and has also set up a further six for his team-mates.

What could Neymar & PSG achieve come May?

PSG are still in the hunt for three major trophies heading into the business end of the season, and could take a huge step towards retaining their Ligue 1 crown by beating Lyon on Sunday.

Victory at the Groupama Stadium would see them move three points ahead of Lyon in second, but Lille will retain top spot in the table if they avoid losing to Nimes earlier in the day.

Mauricio Pochettino's side still have eight games after that to leapfrog Lille, whom they beat 3-0 to progress to the French Cup quarter-finals in midweek.

PSG have also booked their place in the last eight of the Champions League, and will have the chance to avenge their defeat in last season's final when they will try to get the better of Bayern Munich over two legs in April.

Grealish placed in Kane & De Bruyne talent bracket by Aston Villa boss Smith

The enigmatic playmaker has sat out five games through injury over recent weeks, with his value being likened to that of star turns elsewhere

Jack Grealish sits in a talent bracket alongside the likes of Harry Kane and Kevin De Bruyne, says Aston Villa boss Dean Smith, with the mercurial playmaker as important to his club as star turns at Tottenham and Manchester City are to theirs.

An untimely injury has kept the enigmatic 25-year-old sidelined for five games and caused him to miss out on a place in Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad.

Grealish is, however, edging back into contention at club level and Smith admits that the returning talisman will have a major impact on Villa’s efforts over the remainder of the 2020-21 Premier League campaign.

What has been said?

Smith told Sky Sports of Grealish: “We have missed him, just like Tottenham would miss Harry Kane, or Man City would miss Kevin De Bruyne. He's that type of player.

“In terms of our creativity, we've probably dropped off since we had that Covid break [in early January]. But Jack does give us that little bit of quality that we've probably missed in the past five games.

“He's still a major influence around the training ground, he joins in with all our meetings, he's very affable to all the coaching staff, giving his opinions, and he is well-liked around the training ground.”

Will Grealish return to the England fold?

Having caught the eye through five senior international appearances to date, the expectation is that Grealish will figure prominently in England’s plans for this summer’s European Championship.

He will not be the only Villa player in that mix, though, with Tyrone Mings in the process of nailing down a regular role with the Three Lions.

Matty Cash’s performances at right-back have not gone unnoticed, while Smith believes that Ezri Konsa will become a centre-half option for Southgate after narrowly missing out on selection for the start of 2022 World Cup qualification.

The Villas boss has added on Konsa: “He's been our Mr Consistent. I'm never surprised that a player isn't in an international squad because it's not my choice, it's somebody else's, but I'm sure he's been talked about. He's been so consistent for us this season.

“But I know by not getting picked for England it will give him the fire in the belly to keep improving and hopefully make that Euros squad.”

Koeman addresses Haaland to Barcelona transfer rumours

The Dutch head coach responded to the Blaugrana's links with the Borussia Dortmund star ahead of a meeting with Real Sociedad

Ronald Koeman has addressed the ongoing rumours of a potential transfer to Barcelona for Erling Haaland.

Barca are one of several top European clubs being linked with a summer swoop for Haaland, who has been in prolific form for Borussia Dortmund this season.

Koeman was asked to weigh in on the speculation ahead of his side's Liga clash with Real Sociedad this weekend, but gave nothing away with regards to the possibility of the Norwegian moving to Camp Nou in the near future.

What's been said?

"Haaland? This is not a time to talk about a player who is not ours out of respect for his club," the Barca boss told a press conference.

"There is talk of signings but I don't like it and I need to focus on tomorrow's game and the players we have.

"We'll talk in the next few weeks on where we can improve but I will not respond to players who are not ours."

Who else is in the market for Haaland?

A number of potential next destinations have been mooted for Haaland as his stock continues to rise with each passing game.

Bayern Munich have been tipped to try and lure the Norway international away from Westfalenstadion, while Italian giants Juventus have also been credited with an interest in his services.

Premier League trio Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea have also reportedly identified Haaland as a target, along with French champions Paris Saint-Germain.

However, recent reports in Spain have suggested that the 20-year-old's preference would be to join Real Madrid, who could engage in a bidding war with arch-rivals Barca when the market reopens.

Haaland's record in 2020-21 & market value

Haaland is in such high demand because of the staggering numbers he is producing at Dortmund this season across both domestic and European fronts.

The talented young frontman has hit 31 goals in 30 games across all competitions to date, including 19 in the Bundesliga and 10 in the Champions League.

It has been reported that Dortmund now value Haaland in excess of €80 million (£69m/$95m), meaning if they were to sell him in the summer they could make a €60m (£52m/$72m) profit on the player they signed from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020.

What else did Koeman say?

Koeman's first year at Camp Nou has had plenty of ups and downs, but signs of progress have been shown recently which suggest that Barca can finish the campaign with a bang.

The Blaugrana have closed the gap on Liga leaders Atletico Madrid to just four points, and have also booked their place in the Copa del Rey final.

Koeman has played down talk of a domestic double, though, insisting Barca will focus on one game at a time amid a congested fixture list.

"On the one hand, I don't like to talk about a double. This changes very quickly. A long time ago we were bad and there was nothing good," he said.

"We have to keep working, game by game. We are four points behind, there is a very difficult schedule. There is a long way to go to win a lot."

'Arsenal destined for great things under Arteta' - Gunners boss is an 'amazing' tactician, says Smith Rowe

The talented midfielder insists that the north Londoners are "definitely going in the right direction" with the Spaniard at the helm

Arsenal are "destined for great things" under Mikel Arteta, according to Emile Smith Rowe, who has described the Gunners boss as an "amazing" tactician.

Arteta is currently approaching the end of his first full season in charge at Emirates Stadium, which has been a rollercoaster ride for supporters as the Gunners have struggled for consistency on both domestic and European fronts.

Smith Rowe says Arteta's long-term vision has only just started taking shape though, with it his belief that the Spaniard has a clairvoyant streak that can help transform a talented Gunners squad into an elite force in the coming years.

What's been said?

“We're definitely going in the right direction. With the team we've got, I feel like we're destined for great things," Smith Rowe told the Daily Mail.

“Honestly, I don't think people realise how good Bukayo Saka is, for example. He's one of the best players I've ever played with.

“The manager's tactics are amazing, too. It's the little details.

“He'll tell us how certain moments will go down, how the opposition will react to certain movements we make, and it'll happen, exactly as he said it.

“When you see little things like that work, it makes you realise how experienced he is, and how much of a top manager he really is.”

What can Arsenal achieve this season?

Arsenal are currently languishing down in 10th in the Premier League standings, having recorded just 12 wins from their first 28 games alongside 11 defeats and five draws.

Arteta's side can move to within seven points of fourth-placed Chelsea if they win their game in hand, but it now appears unlikely that they will qualify for the Champions League via the top-flight.

The Gunners can, however, still book a spot in the competition by winning the Europa League, having made it through to the quarter-finals by seeing off Olympiacos earlier this week.

If Arteta can deliver continental silverware it would represent a significant step forward for an ever-improving Arsenal team, who produced arguably their best performance of the season so far to beat Tottenham 2-1 in the north London derby last weekend.

Smith Rowe leading Arsenal's next generation of stars

Smith Rowe is the latest academy player to make a breakthrough at the Emirates with Arteta at the helm, as he has played a key role in the Gunners' upturn in form post-new year alongside fellow Englishman Saka.

The two men have already become the poster boys of Arsenal's next generation, and Smith Rowe says their close relationship off the pitch has helped them link up to great effect on it.

“We push each other every day. We’re so close off the pitch," he said. "We’re so competitive, even in the little things like table tennis and in the gym. We’re always laughing in the changing room.

“We know each other inside out. I feel it’s really showing on the pitch and we just want to carry on.”

Real Madrid loanee Martin Odegaard and Kieran Tierney have also stood out among the young players in Arteta's ranks, and Smith Rowe says the latter's "warrior" mentality has had a positive impact on the whole squad.

“Me and KT have such a good bond," he added. “KT is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet but at the same time, he's such a warrior. He's a player who's got everyone's back and always wants to win.”

Caf Champions League: My target is to help Simba SC reach semi-finals – Da Rosa

The French tactician is confident with the support he gets from team officials, adding that he will achieve their targets

Simba SC coach Didier Gomes Da Rosa has explained his main target with the team in the Caf Champions League is to make sure they reach the semi-finals.

Gomes says in his contract he signed to join the Msimbazi giants, he set a goal to ensure the team plays in the semi-finals of the African competition where they are now in the group stage and have already put one leg in the quarter-finals.

Simba inched closer to making it to the quarters after they beat Al Merrikh of Sudan 3-0 at Mkapa Stadium, a win which pushed them to 10 points on the log while second-placed Al Ahly of Egypt are on seven points from four matches.

“Getting the team to that stage [semi-finals] is very possible thanks to the cooperation I get from the leaders, my assistants, and the players who are thirsty for success,” Gomes told MwanaSpoti as quoted by Sokalabongo.

“If you look we are leading the group standings and we have two games left - one we will play at home against AS Vita and the other one away against Al Ahly, if we do well we can obviously finish at the top in the group stage.”

Gomes has further revealed the other goals he was handed by the team’s top brass when he signed a contract to replace Belgian Sven Vandenbroeck is to make sure the team defends the Mainland Premier League and the domestic Cup.

“The other two goals I have is to make sure we defend the league title which so far we are doing well and closing on, and also the domestic Cup, if you look at all those competitions our display is not bad and we can achieve all that at the end of the season.”

The French tactician has also stressed the importance of making his squad better and to be a threat not only in the domestic competitions but across Africa.

“After making Simba a threat locally, I also want them to be the team to beat in Africa, I am here I want it to be a team that is accustomed to taking various trophies in every competition they will participate in,” Da Rosa continued.

“I had the opportunity to see the [Simba] youth team, but I was not fortunate enough to stay with them, but there are plans and systems I will put in place to succeed in finding players who will be better, they may not play for Simba at this time, but in the future.

"It's a big deal that I have and that’s why I'm doing all this to make sure the team achieves the goals we set for ourselves at the beginning of the season.”

Simba are unbeaten in their group stage campaign and are yet to concede a goal, winning their first match away to AS Vita in Kinshasa 1-0 before returning home to stun Al Ahly 1-0 and then, travelled to face Al Merrikh in Sudan where they secured a 0-0 draw before returning home to hammer Al Merrikh 3-0.

Afcon Qualifiers: Wanyama, Timbe out as Mulee names Harambee Stars provisional squad

Kenya are preparing to play two critical continental assignments in late March and will miss two high-profile stars

Montreal Impact midfielder Victor Wanyama is missing in Harambee Stars' Africa Cup of Nations provisional squad to face Egypt and Togo in the qualifiers.

Ayub Timbe, who recently joined J1 League side Vissel Kobe, has also been omitted from the team. Others missing are Mamelodi Sundowns' Brian Mandela, Erick Johanna and Johanna Omollo.

Head coach Jacob 'Ghost' Mulee has, however, added Duke Abuya of Nkana FC, Duncan Otieno of Lusaka Dynamos in a midfield dominated by players from the local league while Kaizer Chiefs' Anthony Akumu has been retained.

Danson Chetambe has been retained from the local players who have been in camp for weeks after his stellar performances against both South Sudan and Tanzania in friendlies.

Ian Otieno is the only foreign-based goalkeeper who has been called up and he joins James Saruni of Ulinzi Stars and Joseph Okoth of KCB. Bidco United's Omar Adisa, despite keeping a clean sheet against the Bright Stars, has been dropped.

James Mazembe of Kariobangi Sharks, Kevin Simiyu of Nzoia Sugar and Wazito FC's Kevin Kimani have also retained their positions from the provisional squad that was earlier called up from the locals.

Erick Kapaito and Elvis Rupia, who are first and the second on the Premier League top scorers' chart, will rival Michael Olunga in a fight to win Mulee's trust in who should spearhead Kenya's goal-getting mission against The Pharaohs and the Sparrowhawks.

Kenya's provisional squad:

Goalkeepers: Ian Otieno (Zesco United, Zambia), James Saruni (Ulinzi Stars, Kenya), Joseph Okoth (KCB, Kenya)
