    • COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – Hot from a five-game unbeaten streak in league play, the Colorado Rapids entered the fourth round of U.S. Open Cup competition, hosting regional neighbors New Mexico United of the USL Championship on Wednesday night. After 90 minutes — which saw Colorado go down a man late in the second half — and two 15-minute sudden death periods, the Rapids fell 4-2 in penalties. The result marks the second-straight year in which the Rapids have been eliminated in the fourth round and the first time since 2004-05 in which Colorado has faced consecutive fourth-round exits from the U.S. Open Cup. “We were 30 seconds away from closing it out,” Rapids interim head coach Conor Casey said postgame. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to do that. We went down a man which made things very difficult. Obviously, the result wasn’t what we wanted, but there were still some very good performances from us tonight.” At the start of the match, Casey played some reserves including homegrown Dillon Serna, centerback Axel Sjoberg and goalkeeper Clint Irwin with the remainder of his regular Starting XI having featured in at least some capacity in Colorado’s 1-0 win against Minnesota United FC the previous weekend. But it was the lower division side who would draw first blood in the match, as former Real Salt Lake forward Devon Sandoval opened the scoring for New Mexico United in the third minute. Despite New Mexico continuing with control of possession and attacking play, Colorado would respond with an equalizer in the 35th minute. Rapids defender Lalas Abubakar headed a long ball down to midfielder Diego Rubio, and the Chilean cleanly finished to level the score at 1-1. “I think the game went the way we thought it was going to go,” Casey said of the first half. “We weren’t able to threaten them as much as we’d have liked pace-wise. But we never really thought we were in too big of danger. I thought we defended quite well as a unit.” The Rapids took their first lead of the match in the second half as midfielder Nicolas Mezquida found an opportunity with several New Mexico defenders surrounding him. Mezquida put his shot past former Rapids goalkeeper Cody Mizell to give Colorado a 2-1 lead in the 46th minute. “I wanted [the offense] to be more direct,” Casey said of the Rapids’ adjustments at the half. “We were able to do that in the second half and score out the gates.” Colorado went down a man in the 72nd minute when Rapids defender Axel Sjoberg was booked with a second yellow card for a dangerous challenge. [See image gallery at appserver-ba4e1838.c.pantheon-dmz.internal] Sandoval nearly equalized for the visitors in the 90th minute, but his shot from close range was parried just outside the post by Rapids goalkeeper Clint Irwin. In extra time, New Mexico would finally find an equalizer. Forward Kevaughn Frater dribbled past multiple Rapids defenders to send a hard shot into the bottom corner of Colorado’s net,...

    • Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 2019 salary of $7.2million is a new MLS record, usurping the $7.1m paid to Sebastian Giovinco in 2017 and 2018. The Swedish star, 37, joined LA Galaxy from Manchester United last year and has made a remarkable impact, scoring 33 MLS goals in 39 appearances. His 2019 salary is a huge increase on […] The post Zlatan Ibrahimovic´s 2019 salary sets MLS record appeared first on Soccer News. • It was an abbreviated Week 15 in Major League Soccer with only 12 teams in action ahead of the Concacaf Gold Cup break. As such, movement was minimal. The Philadelphia Union further secured their spot at No. 2 with a stunning come-from-behind win over the New York Red Bulls, who dropped four spots to No. 7. Following a 5-2 win over FC Cincinnati, New York City FC climbed two spots to No. 5. That’s also the drop for the Seattle Sounders FC after a 2-1 loss at Montreal. The Major League Soccer Power Rankings are created by averaging the rankings submitted by a committee of Pro Soccer USA’s editors and writers.(1) Los Angeles Football Club (11-1-4, 37 points): If there’s a team that perhaps doesn’t want the Gold Cup break it’s LAFC, which are unbeaten in their last eight and have a six-point lead in the Supporters’ Shield race. (2) Philadelphia Union (9-4-4, 31 points): Trailing 2-0 at halftime, Ilsinho came off the bench to rescue the Union, scoring twice and setting up another goal in a thrilling 3-2 victory over the New York Red Bulls. (5) Atlanta United (8-5-2, 26 points): After a sluggish start, Josef Martinez and the defending MLS Cup champions appear to be hitting their stride midseason. The attack isn’t scoring at the same rate as last year, but the defense is much improved. (6) D.C. United (7-4-6, 27 points): D.C. United head into the break winless in their last five, four of those matches though were draws — including the last three. (7) New York City FC (5-1-8, 23 points): With Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola in the house, New York City FC romped FC Cincinnati, 5-2, at Yankee Stadium. Cityzens coach Dome Torrent joked about his team scoring all seven goals — two were NYCFC own goals. (4) Seattle Sounders FC (7-4-5, 26 points): The Sounders slump is happening later than in recent years. Seattle fell to the Montreal Impact, 2-1, to drop their third in a row. The difference, though, is that the Sounders are third in the West and not multiple points below the playoff line. (3) New York Red Bulls (7-6-3, 24 points): Kaku and Brian White staked the Red Bulls to a commanding and deserved 2-0 halftime lead and it appeared New York would go into the Gold Cup break with five wins in six unbeaten. instead, they conceded three times after halftime to fall to the Union. (8) LA Galaxy (9-6-1, 28 points): The Galaxy head into the Gold Cup break with wins in two of their last three and are a distance second to crosstown rival LAFC in the West. (9) FC Dallas (6-6-4, 22 points): Francis Atuahene won’t soon forget his 23rd birthday. Just 42 seconds into his MLS debut, he scored his first league goal to secure a 2-2 draw against the San Jose Earthquakes. (10) Houston Dynamo (7-3-3, 24 points): The Dynamo are going to be busy after the Gold Cup break. No team in...

AS Roma lost their Prince of Rome few years ago when Francesco Totti retired from football and this summer they have lost his successor. Daniele De Rossi’s contract at the Giallorossi got to its end and now the veteran Italian is expected to make a move across the pond.
